Reviews Gluttony - It's A Sin

This place has shut down, after the owner took all the money he owed his staff and suppliers and pissed off overseas with it. The 5/5 is for all the staff and loyal customers that kept the place going despite his selfishness.

LOVE THIS PLACE - And PLEASE don't change the rustic decor! A great place if you want a change from the characterless steel and glass clones so many cafes are these days. The rustic feel reminds you of the friendly cafes of the hey-day of Fitzroy, Collingwood, Newtown and Glebe. The decor is what makes it UNIQUE ! I also found it clean. The service was fast enough and in fact they were kind enough to made me a beautiful bacon and eggs brekky even though they'd officially just closed the kitchen (I was despo!). The staff might not wear hipster beards and the latest fashions but they are lovely people! The locals love this place and regularly hang out and chat with friends sipping a glass of red, which I also enjoyed. The coffee was great too. If you want an old-school style cafe with good food, friendly people and interesting, atmospheric decore, this is the place to go. One of my faves in Melbourne !

Old school & perfectly ok. I had passed by the cafe on my rare (nowadays) forays into Collingwood - but probably wasn't particularly attracted by its external appearance or the name of the place (although you certainly remember it). My partner's mum offered to take us there on a recent visit to the area as she had gone a few times while running an event nearby. My partner and I really enjoyed our $10 meals (the deal included coffee - any kind you want). As part of the deal -they offered sausage roll & salad, pie & salad etc PLUS the coffee. Not bad for pricey ol' Melbs nowadays.
We went for the 'home made' lasagne, while my partner's mum had the soup. The salad we got was a rice salad which seemed an odd combination - but it was all perfectly fine. The cafe probably isn't the trendiest in the area - but it's not overpriced & seemed to attract quite a few people. The tables around us were all full & everyone seemed pretty happy with what they got as far as I could tell.
The service was friendly, not intrusive & unpretentious. Very pleasant.
The food wasn't outstandingly memorable, but it was ok and I would happily eat there again. If you want good value & something down to earth compared to the latecomers in the area - this could be your spot! :)

Chill Out. I also do not understand all the negative reviews of this place. I am actually really happy to have stumbled across it one rainy day. The service is friendly, prompt and warm. Yes, the place could probably do with a makeover but stop complaining about how thin the booths are and the old ceilings and focus on the bloody good prices and delicious food! Not to mention how big the portions are and that everything is made from scratch in the house. Gluttony also caters to vegans. I have never been let down at Gluttony and have been going there for food and coffee for a year.
This place is perfect for a student, someone very hungry and people that appreciate fair prices and well established venues.

Yummmmm. The first thing that drew me to this location, was the interesting indoor/outdoor seating. allowing a coffee and cigarette to go down smoothly in an illusion of indoor comfort.
after frequenting for drinks, i tried the breakfast recently. and oh my, it was delicious! I love it!

Plenty of options and cheap coffee. $3.70 for a large cappuccino that tasted great!

Love this place. I work locally. I love my coffee and this is the place to go. Staff are prompt, friendly and the food is excellent. The gent behind this place restores my faith in humanity- many good deeds done for the community and for those who don't have sleeve tattoos, ride vespas and are prepared to pay for awful coffee @inflated prices

Really?. I don't understand all the nasty reviews. Gluttony is perhaps my favourite cafe in the world - and I've been to cafes in at least eight countries. I guess it's a matter of expectation. If you're looking for a friendly local with good coffee, prompt service, amazing prices and enormous portions, you won't find better. Try the soup of the day - very tasty, huge bowls with cornbread on the side and prices that make people blink in astonishment. On the other hand, if you've ever described yourself as a 'foodie' and you're looking for things to nitpick about... and yeah maybe not the best place for non smokers. But we smokers have so few places left. There are so many cafes in Melbourne, surely at least one to cover all tastes and desires, no need to be a hater on a dedicated local cafe just trying to run their business.

Synonymous with the cafe's kooky title, the breakfasts and meals in general here are indeed generous, ok, let's say gluttonous, but far from sinful. The only sin here is not to chill-out, shake off any CBD style expectations and enjoy the oh-so-Smith-street vibe, ecclectic and eccentric staff, well loved and worn tables and chairs and warm buzz of coffee hour as the baristas busy themselves with both the indoor and al fresco diners wanting Melbourne's best caffeine fix. Distressed in its decor, the corridor to the bathrooms is plastered in promo posters and flyers of artisan advertisers gone-by, and red brick cafe walls always up to date with the latest local artists' exhibit, Gluttony has old world Fitzroy charm, unpretentious but loaded with atmosphere, the smell of cheese bread, coffee beans, cakes and garlic loader pasta and savory muffins and is nothing short of a dining and people-watching feast. Daily lunch specials are always worth, unbeatably priced and often offers something new as the standard menu is rarely changed (to the owner's credit- when you're on to a good thing- many good things) but the real sparkle of this gem is the cake and savoury baked goods cabinet! All home made, none of the pre-purchased, week-old variety, Gluttony offers some of the most delicious and delectable baked goods in the Smith St strip (a big call as it's situated amidst many other cafe's and cake shops). Personal favorites are the steak sandwich (delicious), meat lasagna, and basically any of the breakfast delights. If you're sticking with coffee, make sure you go for a chocolate brownie or slice to accompany (again, all made on the premises) and you'll be sure to make a friend on the oft community tables to share a morning paper with, whilst the owner and his mixed bag of fun twenty-something staff do their thang'. Cosy, homely and fun. If you love the Smith St, Brunswick street style, or in search of the best cakes and desserts in Melbourne's northern fringe, go and be sinful; it's nice to be naughty sometimes. And a little Gluttonous.

Gluttony It's a Sin. Gluttony It's A Sin played host to a very enjoyable late breakfast. The menu is a little weird, but it's kind of refreshingly different. Coffee is good and service was good too. Weird mix of staff, but all were friendly and looked after us very well. Very accommodating as we were a bigger group who just walked in.

Hold the rocket!. That's my only complaint. The food here is excellent. Great vego options and huge brekkies! But if you order something w/ rocket - ask them to hold the rocket! NO one needs that much greenery on a plate! Coffee is great, service is swift, friendly and fun. They don't rush you and they do accomodate the kids. Love Gluttony. Love it!

Very good breaky. We were staggering down Smith St on a very hungover Saturday morning and found this delightful cafe. Breakfast was cheap but better than anything I've had in a very long time...........My scrambled eggs and accompanyments were perfect and my wifes poached eggs were spot on.............Can't comment on the coffee as was too seedy to confront a cup..............Will certainly go back when in town again...........

Well named. Enormous portions, extremely chocolatey hot chocolate and the corn bread is worth it alone.

The best Chai Tea Latte in town. This is one of my favourite places to breakfast. It really is slow and wonderful on a sunday. not hurried like other places tend to be.

Great food and even better Soy Chai Tea Lattes. a must have here!

A favourite for brekkie. Huge serves, usually great service. Cash only, which is a bit annoying.
