Review Cafe De France - Coogee

James Unwin
Great French restaurant close to the centre of the city. The quality of the food was consistently excellent across all courses and dishes. The serving size on some dishes, such as the lamb rack, could definitely be a little larger but overall the dining experience was great. Would highly recommend the Duck Liver Parfait and the Duck Pie. Staff were attentive and the service was all round great. I also loved the atmosphere and vibe of the restaurant, perfect for a romantic evening or an intimate dinner with family or friends.

Such a delight to walk in off the busy street and be welcomed into the calm and sumptuous space that is Claire’s kitchen. The food is always excellent - seasoned with care and subtlety and presented tastefully. There’s a solid selection of cocktails and wines available by the glass/bottle at very reasonable prices. Staff are animated and interactive but not overbearing, and generally converse with each other in French! Come for the food, stay for the wine and the atmosphere.

A perfect finish to our trip to Sydney. Four of us enjoyed a perfect dinner here. Amazing service in particular by Valentin. Very hard to pick the best dish between Lamb rack, Beef tornado and Duck pie. However to me the Duck Pie was the stand out. The bread is fresh and so very good! Great cocktails and our Pinot Noir was delicious. A very special experience ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ See you next time we visit Sydney

Great french restaurant with nice atmosphere and live music upstairs. Staffs were friendly and attentive, gave us a good recommendation on food which were all delicious. Duck pie was surprisingly very big in portion. Tartare was fresh, lamb rack was a bit hard to cut but it actually was very tender. Scallops as one of the entree items were especially good. Price is reasonable for french cuisine.

Pretentious and overpriced. The food quality was good but not exceptional. Paying for sides in a fixed menu was outrageous. My dessert was a frozen chocolate mousse that tasted like it had been in the freezer for weeks. On paying the bill there was an initial thought of under payment, when they realised this was not the case an arrogant comment about returning $3 to us was made, which of course we declined.

Found this place due to a deal on The Fork. Great find. Nice french food with cute ambience. The baguette was a touch stale and service forgot us a couple of times, so 1 star off. Tuna nicoise and rack of lamb were excellent. Good serving sizes

While Claire's kitchen isn't the best french restaurant in Sydney, I have to say I have never had a bad dish here and the staff are always really friendly.

Very friendly service. Love the beef tartare (just be minded the portion of this dish is quite big).

Couldn’t have wished for a better Mother’s day treat. Crepes were soft and warm and tasty. The maple syrup was just the right quantity, not too much. And the bacon was crispy and perfectly balanced the sweetness of the other components. Three perfect components. With the addition of a great cup of coffee, created an amazing meal. It was not an exception. The other dishes, the French toast, the Fish and chips, the Salmon crepe and the Omelet were of the same perfect quality. The atmosphere is nice and homey, and the staff is very professional and friendly. Thank you!

I often visit this Coogee local, a chic and comfortable cafe that always seems to be open. Breakfast and lunch are served daily, with dinner Thursday to Sunday night. My favourite dishes are; breakfast pastries or savoury crepes, with a nicoise salad for lunch. The 3 cheese souffle with a glass of champagne is the perfect entree. Much of the evening menu changes with the seasons. Cafe de France is BYO but I LOVE their wine list. Highly recommended.

Thank you for a very special dinner to celebrate our Mother’s Day. The service, the food...the flavours, the atmosphere...tres bien! A touch of a France in Coogee!

My absolute favourite breakfast in all of Sydney is served here - the house smoked salmon. Divine! In fact, all of their breakfasts that I have had here have been fantastic. Coffee is great. Only downside is the limited number of tables - it can get very busy on weekends.

Very convenient for Chloe Dallimore's Xtend Barre, so you can get Pilate-d and dance it up, then skip in for a delicious (and healthy, if that's your fancy) lunch! The Salad Nicoise has smoked salmon rather than tuna and is generous, fresh and excellent. Great coffee, of course. Nice people.

Beautiful food and lovely service. My steak was the best I've had in a long time. My husband loved his coq au vin. BYO $10 a bottle. Warm atmosphere.

Love it! I'm glad Coogee has a proper French restaurant. The ambience is classic casual. Raf and the staf are always great. The food is soo good. The cheese soufflé is always my favourite!

The best location for the sunshine especially in autumn/winter. The food here is always consistently good and great service, they do the best Croque-Madame in Sydney. Love the breakfasts here

Had breakfast there this morning it was lovely and coffee all week was great. With friendly staff always a smile.

Ordered Raf’s breakfast which was $15 and got two pieces of toast with a few scraps of smoked ham on top. Felt pretty ripped off. My partner ordered the omelette with mushrooms which was nice. Coffees were good. Yeah don’t think I’ll go there again.

We were catching up with friends for lunch and they had a baby and pram which made getting a table a bit of a wait (30mins) but once seated we were happy to catch up over a glass of wine and food. As my friends were regulars they told us what was their favourite dishes. One of them being the croque madam which my husband tried and enjoyed. My mushroom crepe wasn’t what I expected the crepe batter thicker than what I thought it would be, but still it wasn’t a bad dish. My son enjoyed his ham, cheese croissant.<br/><br/>Their bowls of hot chocolate and eclairs looked good and I wouldn’t mind trying if I come back next time. Friendly staff and a cozy cafe which is off the main strip and we managed to luckily get parking right outside!

GRADE A CAFE - always delivers top quality food and service. I find in Coogee especially there can be some pretty shoddy food knocking around.... however this place is the dogs bollocks !!’<br/><br/>We usually go for the breakfast, I’d recommend the croque monsiuer which is an absolute winner. <br/><br/>On a evening, the food was equally as good. Definitely go for the mussels. Bloody great. <br/><br/>Must visit.

A quaint cafe perched up on a hill alongside coogee beach. A cute spot for breaky with its french cuisine and rustic interior. Well mannered staff that are quick to bring out your order. Really enjoyed the food and didn't have any complaints. Would have liked a bit more variety on the menu and as always, the chairs were uncomfortable.

I have been here a few times and always great food, coffee, and service. The crepes are amazing and so is the spatchcock. Well worth the visit.

I was after a coffee and a feed on the way to work and wasn't able to get a park on Coogee Bay Rd, so I decided to drive on to cafè de France. It had been a while since I last visited this cafè. It has a French bistro feel, there were some nice sit down breakfast options however I was running late and needed something quick. I went with the double smoked ham and gruyere croissant which was nice. I also ordered a latte to go, they use gabriel coffee which nice. Will have to return when I have more time to spare.

Excellent find! Love the large bowls of coffee-well made and well balanced. Everything on the menu sounds amazing so I can't wait to go back.

Uncreatively titled though it is, Cafe De France does a great job of telling you what to expect. Surprise! French cafe food. <br/><br/>The coffee is decent, if unremarkable. I always feel strange criticising French people on food. "Zis is 'ow it is supposed to be, idiote!"<br/><br/>The food is delicious and buttery, with the coup de gras being the Croque Monsieur. That's either a very clever joke, or an atrocity to the French language...you decide. <br/><br/>Incidentally, Croque Monsieur means "mister crunchy", which is nowhere near as sexy sounding. This dish, however, is near perfection. It's a wonderful combination of bread, cheese and ham, and is much more than the sum of its parts. A lesser reviewer would have been tempted to write "the Somme of its parts", but I am a professional. <br/><br/>Also, despite the omelettes and such, eggs Benedict is notable in its absence for breakfast. <br/><br/>The interior is simple and somewhat French. The service is pleasant, without many stereotypes, save for the navy and white stripe t-shirt uniforms. Also, the constant French music. <br/><br/>So, give yourself over (Is there a synonym for this phrase?) to Cafe De France.

Walked into this cafe on a sunday morning and it looked the typical cute little place to have coffee and breakfast. Made a reservation for dinner for the same evening and upon arrival noticed the transformation from cafe to restaurant. Food was delicious, my favorite was the main course of duck breast with leeks and a lovely jus. My husband said he would go everyday for the mussels he had for entrée. We shared creme brulee for dessert, and wished I had it to myself. Service was very friendly but a little hit and miss.

Café de France a little jewel in South Coogee<br/><br/>There is something comforting in knowing your local café is pretty much always open. The hard working French owner of this lovely bistro opens at 7am for breakfast and lunch Mon to Wed, with breakfast, lunch AND dinner offered Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun! <br/><br/>The interior of Café de France is elegant, low-key and cozy with a clever design that separates the smaller tables from the one large shared table. Weather permitting we usually take an outdoor table (especially on a warm summer day or night). It’s a great place to relax and watch the world go by, with lots of repeat customers adding to the happy atmosphere. The staff are always super courteous, charming and upbeat. <br/><br/>For those who enjoy their coffee take note the barista here is fantastic! I adore my bowl of latte for breakfast, with a salmon crepe or avocado on toast to follow. For lunch I often have the fab Niçoise, made with a generous piece of salmon and a yummy house made vinaigrette. Recently I’ve started visiting the café for dinner as well. This week we dined on perfectly shucked oysters, prawns with pesto and a duck breast that practically shimmered in a wonderful red wine sauce served with braised leeks. Say yes to sides here as they are also tres magnifique. Dessert…? the chocolate mousse is to die for! I have table booked here for my birthday next week and am looking forward to the three cheese soufflé :)<br/><br/>My neighborhood favorite. Highly recommended.

Lovely, attentive and skillful barrista - great coffees.<br/><br/>Food was good but expensive. I had the croque monsieur, perfect and satisfying! My friend had the (delicious!) mushrooms with goats cheese on toast and an extra poached egg .... serving was pretty small even with the extra egg.<br/><br/>Nice atmosphere, staff so-so (barista notwithstanding) ... one dithering waitress was young and sleepy and pretty clueless ... the owner was way too pushy, trying to upsell add-ons for each order!! I've never experienced anything like it. Pretty annoying, I don't want to be harrassed at breakfast. Sure, make a suggestion but don't keep pushing when we say no. <br/><br/>Not sure I'll be back ... maybe next time I want to try a croissant and bowl of coffee for breakfast.

The problem with not taking a photo of the menu when I go and eat somewhere is that now I can’t tell you exactly what I ate or how much it was…which is a bit disappointing. So apologies ahead, but I still wanted to share these awesome photos with you!. What I do know – S had the Salad Niçoise which she said was thoroughly excellent (and trust me, she’s had a lot of salad niçoises!) and would definitely recommend. SVT had the Steak Frites which is just a general staple which can never go wrong – especially with a knob of yummy herb butter on top! And I had something with smoked salmon and celeriac and snow pea remoulade and toast which was really really yum as well. The celeriac salad was particularly nice, and balanced the fishy taste very well.

Rude. Never have experienced such rudeness over the phone, especially from somewhere that wants your custom. I rang to enquire about vegetarian options and to ask if they could make a vegetarian main, not an uncommon request these days. The lady who answered the phone spoke as if I must be from Mars to ask such a thing and after speaking to the chef said no, that I should make do with the soufflé and some sides.

Neighbourhoo gem. This is one of my favourite places in coogee, staff always friendly and food genourous and tasty. <br/>Desserts are a special treat, with crime brûlée being my favourite.

Menu sounds stunning but falls short on what is actually delivered. This was dinner. Tarte tatin was like apple baby food tatin - the gnocchi sauce was floury, almost unpalatable, tasting remarkably like the floury sauce that accompanied the soufflé. None of our party had a good experience, left disappointed. Have heard their breakfasts and lunches are very good though so looking forward to trying them. They're only new so am sure there is a lot of room thee to iron out dinner issues to make a very fine neighbourhood restaurant.

Not acceptable. Food fine but not fine enough to compensate for rude service. Not in this city when we have do many fabulous options. Shocker and over charged.... Not on!

Non non non, French menu looked great but oh my goodness, what was delivered was terrible. French onion soup looked like apple purée and tasted odd, sweet and glue like

This gorgeous little restaurant ticks all the boxes for me. Delicate, sophisticated food, friendly staff, the owner personally checking in with her clientele, stylish decor mixing classic lead-light and dark timbers with clean, modern materials, great location near the beach and reasonable prices. I had the salmon soufflé and potato gratin - subtle yet warming on a cold winter's night. Then I shared 3 desserts with my friends (because they were all too good not to) - the Belgian chocolate mousse my favourite. I imagine in summer it will breathe nicely onto the street - it will need to when word gets out!
