Review The Lion And Buffalo - Coogee

Sydney food Digger
I have not one complaint about this place, besides annoyed that I didn’t order the breakfast burger as well (seen someone order it when I was leaving and wow, it looked insane). The B&L box was amazing, do it your self bagel it paired perfectly with everything on the plate. The Apple and cinnamon hot cakes were too good, I could not stop eating them. Service was so nice and great location.

What a suprise. Quality service by quality people. Food was fantastic, coffee had that beautiful bold flavour with that chocolate finish. Really nice vibe, and tidy lay out. Special thanks to that ginger bloke who served us, a real trooper. I ever in the neighbourhood, worth a visit, truly a locals hideout.

Had an AMAZING time here. The shops only small but I can see how its a pillar of the community. The food and drinks were well presented and delicious, the interior and exterior of the establishment insisted on a welcoming vibe and the hospitality was very good. Left full and even taking some takeaway to go! Highly recommended!

Fantastic restaurant, service is quick and friendly. Quality coffee with great menu to back it up. Definitely my favourite cafe in coogee. Worth a visit if your in the area. Well done ✅

This is my tenth day of a three month visit to Oz, and It's clear that Aussies must spend of fair proportion of their income in coffee shops such as this one. 😉 Having driven passed for those ten days, decided to go for a walk and try this one out. As expected, quite busy, but got a window seat after ordering my usual flat white. Beautifully presented in a quirky cup, it wasn't quite the best I've experienced to date. I like my coffee a bit stronger, but still streets ahead of what you'll be served in the UK. Be paying many more visits to taste some of the amazing food that was being served.

Occasionally, I like to head out of my usual dining suburbs and experience somewhere new and different. It's a bonus when the venue is worth the time and travel, just like this spot! The venue is about a 20 minute walk from both Coogee and Maroubra beach, so you'll find people heading over after their morning swim or surf to pick up a coffee. Previously owned by Polish woman Anna Allison, she named the cafe after her and her husband's star signs. Leo (lion) and Taurus (buffalo). Even though the venue is under new management, you can see that it still pays homage to Anna, as they've maintained the soul of the venue and continue to have a Polish influence on the menu. I also noticed their obsession with unicorns which brings this colourful and bright vibe. I think my favourite dish of the day was the 'L&B Lox'. It had an NYC bagel, Ōra King salmon, cream cheese, pickled fennel, capers, tomato, eggplant & latke's. I kind of liked that I had to put it together myself. I could balance the ingredients and flavours out the way I wanted to. Now none of us were hungover, but we ordered the 'Polish Hang Over Cure'. It had fluffy scrambled eggs, sautéed tomatoes, Polish sausage, red currants, Iggy's sourdough toast and some of the best bacon I've had. I hardly ever get bacon this crispy. I just wish I had ordered a whole plate of it! We also decided to order the 'Smashed Avocado'. I mean it was simply just avocado on toast done beautifully, but when we saw more dishes off their menu (in particular their Bacon and Egg roll) we had many regrets. I promised myself that I'd go back and try that roll. It looked INCREDIBLE. For something a little sweet, we had the 'Apple & Cinnamon Hot Cakes. They were topped with slow cooked apple, L&B honeycomb, seasonal berries and finished with maple whipped cream. These are a must order. Just be quick with your photos as that cream melts in a second. Even though it's a little out of my way, I would definitely come back. Everything was just delicious, servings were generous and the whole team were lovely.

It was raining but worth my travel all the way to South Coogee as the food here were very tasty, coffee was great, and hospitality absolutely on point! Recommended dishes: 🥖 Black Opal Wagyu Sandwich. The wagyu beef is so tender and so delicious! 🍜 Better Thank Sex Ramen. So hearty and tasty, love the thick tonkotsu broth 🥚 Ottoman Eggs 🍞 Black Forest French Toast. So yummy!

despite the dreary weather, i really enjoyed this cute brunch spot! there's both indoor and outdoor seating, with service fast and friendly. this is what we ordered! 🍽 we got the Grilled Haloumi with freekeh, pickled beetroots, cucumbers and chickpeas. the labneh slathered across the bottom gave this dish great balance and overall it was fresh and light. we both agreed that the beetroot pieces were a bit large and in charge, and the haloumi a lil thick. slice both of these in halves instead and this dish would be a 10/10 🥗 for dessert, the Black Forest French Toast is a clear winner. gorgeously plated, the yuzu custard and sour cherries give the palate much relief after smashing that baked brioche and choc ganache 🍫 bright, proud flavour makes this shine 🌟 i just HAD to get the "Better Than Sex Ramen" and wow... i wasn't expecting to love it this much. i was told this dish is created using the male Berkshire pig which gives us this rich, smooth broth. not overly salty or thick and very generous with pork slices, i couldn't fault this at all 🍜 check out my food instagram @erinxeats for more!

My local. Absolutely love this place. Incredibly attentive friendly staff and owner. Top Notch Barista who always engages me when I come in and great coffee too. Been coming here for 2 years and recommend it to everyone. Try the bacon - not sure how many times I’ve just popped in for takeaway bacon.

Been meaning to try this place - thankfully it was good as we were so hungry after coastal Walk! Staff were very accommodating, food was yummy and none of the pretentiousness of bondi brunch places. Sides are a bit exy but generous serves so fairly priced :) Iggy's bread is Amazing - drool. No direct sun but they do have heaters and blankets if you're outside.

The Lion and Buffalo is the best cafe around the food is great and you have to taste the muffins they are to die for. Best coffee too. Thanks Anna and Dean and all your lovely staff we love coming to your cafe.

A small little cafe that seemed quite popular when we came by. The wait staff were very friendly and helpful. The yuzu-infused egg omelette was delicious and so filling I could not finish it! It was $20 though, so would suggest to order to share as it was a bit of a waste to not finish..

Friendly staff, complimentary sparkling water, and delicious food. Obviously very popular due to the large amount of people dining here! A little squashy inside, but once you’re seated outside it’s very pleasant! Will definitely stop by here again!

After years of driving past this cafe and seeing it busy everytime I decided to find out why. It’s the great service, comfy ambience and top notch food and coffee. I was there for brunch and had a bacon and egg roll that would put all others to shame and my wife had a salmon dish that was delicious. We’ll be back.

Stumbled upon this place upon googling "all day breakfast" in Coogee.

Ambience: tiny but cosy. Not many seats inside but we managed to get in after a short wait outside. Service is welcoming with a community feel. The food arrives pretty fast

Food: I had the braised lamb - great flavours however I didn't realise it is served cold. I environed a warm saucy hearty meal - but it was on the "cous cous salad" side. It's huge though and lots of meat. Shareable with 2 people and a smaller side plate

Will return and recommend to friends!
Cosy little corner cafe in South Coogee with an all day menu. Lovely and helpful service which added to our experience. Our table ordered the smashed avo with poached eggs, warm lentil and halloumi tabouleh with a poached egg, and the 15hr braised lamb. All three meals were delightful and a great eating experience. The menu caters for all tastes and plenty of GF options. Also tried the white flowering tea which was such a delight to drink and a great way to warm up when it’s cold out. Will return to try the special ramen and the adorable cakes and cookies available on the counter!

I wish I can give this place 4.5. I won a Instagram competition to come here and I have no obligation to review this place but I was very impressed with the meals we had. All the mains we had was that much better than other places. The lamb salad was a big bowl and tasty and the miso salmon was just out of this world. It's been a while since my taste buds were excited by new tastes

AThe Lion and Buffalo is a gorgeous “hole in the wall” style cafe with a menu packed with options, all amazing. They’ve recently done a big revamp and it’s really improved them to be contender for my favorite cafe in sydney. Choosing what to ge from the menu was difficult, but I had the B&E roll add avo which came in a big panini sandwich, with perfect ratios and amounts, as well as a purple cabbage and green salad which really complimented the relish and bacon and made it almost refreshing. I’ve also had the steak sandwich and the oats, all of which are fantastic. The coffee is good as well, although not the reason I’d go back. Price for 2 with 2 coffees and mains was ~$20 each, so great value for money. 10/10 would return

I wish this could be my little local. Friendly service and good location.

I had the smashed avo on toast with a poached egg and soy latte. Coffee was creamy and delicious. Avo was fresh and a really generous serving size. I would go back if I was in the area!

Great little local cafe about 10 mins walk from Coogee beach. Highly recommend the smoked salmon. Wonderful service and our breakfast was delicious and beautifully presented, will definitely be back.

The best service. The most amazing smoked salmon breakfast as well as the bacon and egg rolls. Nothing compares. For lunch.... defiantly the lamb. Go girls.
I eat here everyday, if I miss my daily fix of the lion and the buffalo I get grumpy, very very grumpy. Ask my wife. I would call myself a serial cafe man and this place is not a cafe its a place of worship. the food is insanely delicious (and consistent), the service is outstanding and they go out of there way to make you feel special. I drive 10mins out of my way to go here daily. There simply isn't enough stars to give this place. The effort, enthusiam, and all round quality of this place is literally second to none. Big love

Headed down to grab some lunch and it was only 1.30pm only to be advised that the kitchen had already closed. Poor effort and utterly disappointed to say the least!

Friendly service and good food. Had the poached eggs with Avo on the side, was a good size portion of Avo and the bread was delicious. All in all a good meal. Coffee was delicious and most enjoyed the little biscuit that comes with it :), enjoyable cafe to eat at.

My husband and I visited this morning after hearing great things from a friend. We we're not disappointed. I went with smashed avo and hubby had a wagyu steak sandwich. Serving sizes were generous and meal quality was exceptional. This will be our new weekend breakfast spot!

A brilliant spot for your warm morning fix to get you pepped up for the day. The coffee is made with LOVE. You'll walk away with a smile on your face after visiting.

A great little cafe off malabar road, easy to get a car park, close to a bus stop. What got me to this cafe was an Instagram post about latte art champ JB little being there, but had great food too.
It was a rainy day and quite busy, I shared a long table as I was dining solo. I ordered the latte, because I wanted the latte art and got a beautiful swan on my coffee! Very cute, it had a small little piece of shortbread with it too. The waitresses were attentive and service was very fast. I ordered a granola bowl, very nicely presented in a wooden board in a glass jar with yoghurt, figs and Shaved apple. It was delicious. On the menu there was also avo brekkies, salmon plate, a big brekkie, slow cooked lamb and kid options. It was a lovely brekkie and very cheap, around $15 total, unheard of these days for coffee and brekkie.

Sooo good! Wish this was my local as I would come all the time! I had the salmon plate and it was probably the best smoked salmon breakfast I have ever had, topped with salmon roe and all! Friends had the burger and tomato salad - everything tastes amazing and the staff were lovely.

Had a very yummy breakfast this morning at lion and the buffalo. I was greeted with smiley and friendly staff which was great! The home made tomato salsa with my poached eggs was delicious! Overall very fresh and yummy and a shortbread biscuit with my coffee- will be back :)

What’s better than spending a lovely Sunday afternoon (after flinging sticks of course) with your friends at a cafe with lovely wall art? So here we are at The Lion and Buffalo in Coogee. Mr M suggested we should try it out. None of us have been there, Mr R was totally starving and all he wanted was food.

I had the bacon and egg roll today on the recommendation of a friend. This has to be the best bacon and egg roll in Sydney. The staff were fantastic, super attentive and very professional. Thank you for providing a high quality cafe in the eastern suburbs. Bravo

Not a bad breakfast spot but can't say I'd go back in a hurry either. I had the bacon and egg roll and it was quite enjoyable really, and it had slaw which was nice as there are few things worse than a bacon and egg roll without anything fresh on it. The bacon across all the meals was odd - it was in little strips. It took the flavour away. One of my friends had the big breakfast and the Polish sausage was delicious. My other friend had the salmon platter and it was huge, so I appreciate the good value there, but it was also a bit unrefined component wise. The coffee was very distinct and quite vanilla-y but we did like it. Overall The Lion and the Buffalo is a good little spot, but there is so much competition around that I would opt for somewhere else instead.

Absolutely beautiful food. Service was ok-ish. Price was a little bit steep (Plenty of add ons). But the food was delicious.
One of the best smashed avo + sourdough I've had. Will be heading back just to make sure they didn't fluke it.

Ps. There were plenty of flies buzzing around. Should probably have a shower next time....
Bite Me
My new local.. One of the very few Cafes in Sydney that still serves a little biscuit with your coffee! Counter filled with homemade baked goods, lots of outdoor seating and grass area for kids to play. Good food, friendly staff.. a go-to in Coogee.

Had breakfast here a few times now. Food is fresh, well prepared, innovative and well presented. Way better than most cafes in this area. Service is invariably friendly and attentive and yes, the coffee rocks :)
(Ive deducted 1/2 a point for proximity to busy Malabar Rd, minor downside)
