Review The Clove Restaurant - Coogee

Ordered from here multiple times through Uber eats. Somehow on the app it’s called taste of India Coogee. Food is tasty. Nice Lamb biryani. The Aubergine curry is one of our favourite dishes. Portions are decent. Our order did get messed up once though with 1 missing item and 1 wrong item. I hope they pay more attention to orders next time.

Great place for authentic Indian dishes. The staff and owner were very friendly and the prices are also very pocket friendly.

I would give them negative stars if possible. I ordered from here for the first time and I don't think I will ever order again. The Gulab Jamun I ordered had mold on it and the syrup was stinking. I am very disappointed and may report this to the food authority. It is very irresponsible of them to sell food that has gone bad.

Food was not to the standard expected. On the menu each dish stated it would include coriander leaves and they all arrived without. When we asked where the coriander was, the owner told us all the people in Coogee have an allergic reaction to coriander and he will get in trouble therefore they no longer put it in their dishes. When I asked if we could have some, he gave us literally 3 leaves of coriander to go in 3 curries. This was a minuscule amount, and when I asked for more he refused. He was very rude, and considering there were only 3 tables occupied, the service was lacking. Coming from an Indian heritage, the food was very disappointing. However, towards the end of the meal he became more friendly and offered us ice cream.

I came for the first time here and the experience was absolutely ridiculous. I’m not sure if it was the staff member or owner whosoever behaved very rude. And whoever knows Indian food taste, they’ve the worst taste and worst staff behaviour. Never gonna order or return back there.

I have been ordering their Gulab Jamun and Chicken Tikka via Deliveroo since couple of weeks. Both of these dishes tastes good with good quantity. I am happy overall.

Manager and staff were too busy dealing with home delivery orders to pay any attention to us, so we waited over an hour for our meals. Won’t be returning, even though food is of a high quality, ambience is pleasant and toilets are clean and well stocked.

The food is delicious. Recommend the vindaloo and the fish curry. Nicely decorated and good service.

We hadn't booked but walked into The Clove on a whim. There was nobody in there (for a Saturday night), which was surprising. However, the food was delicious, filling and not over-priced. Also, as we were the only ones there, the service was excellent. I actually felt sorry for the staff that nobody was there because the food is really good, the location is perfect (away from noisy Coogee Pavilion), its BYO, AND you can hear yourself talk! I urge anyone who likes Indian food to try it - and please fill up their restaurant on a Saturday night! (PS: My recommendation - the Pistachio Chicken)

Here right now, been waiting one hour for my main meal... the waiters seem to be understaffed (although there aren’t many customers anyway) but it’s really really slow service.

Also, it is really dark so my partner and I thought it wasn’t even open, but walk closer and it’s actually open. Surprise.

Will update once the food is here.

Ordered for delivery through UberEATS. Chicken tikka masala was pretty good. Not the best, but fine for delivery. An order of cheese naan is one piece - very cheesy but good.

Absolutely fantastic food and service! Large portions, wonderful flavours! Friendly staff! Great ambiance and location. Highly recommend, Very happy, we will definitely be back!

Great service; attentive yet not overbearing. They have a small (4 items) Kids Menu which makes it much easier to have a family meal out.

The Butter Chicken was extremely mild, almost like tomato soup, and I would have preferred it if there was an option to choose how hot the dish is (i.e. mild/medium/hot) as other restaurants have.

The Prawn Jalfrezi was really good as was the Rice and the Naan Breads.

The chicken in the Butter Chicken was dry and quite tough but I am prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt and I will try it again the next time I am there. It may have been a one off.

$100 is about par for the course for two adults and two children in Coogee although there are cheaper options for Indian cuisine but they do not have options for kids.

UPDATE: Gave it a second go with exactly the same result. A real disappointment, couldn’t finish the dish - such a shame given how good this restaurant used to be at its previous location.

Changed my rating to 1 star.

Amazing Indian restaurant. Mains were really tasty and you could tell they use good quality meat. Service was excellent and super friendly. Definately our new go to curry house.

Fantastic food and service. This is by far my favourite Indian in Sydney. The butter chicken is amazing! Prices are good and the staff are really nice.

Four of us dined on a Tuesday night in May with two Groupon vouchers between us. The vouchers cost $45 per couple and for that, each person got a soft drink, an entrée, a main course and a dessert. Also included; a plate of rice and a basket of naan bread (plain or garlic) for the table.

For entrees, we choose samosas, onion bhajee and chicken kebabs and for mains, we played it safe with a selection of mild beef, and chicken dishes. To end, what else but our fav gulab jamun and mango kulfi ice cream desserts? Portion sizes were generous and all the dishes were fresh and tasty, brimming with those aromatic and fragrant Indian herbs and spices that we love so much. Sauces were rich and creamy and the meat was well cooked and tender. And we were able to choose from pretty much everything on the menu, except for the fish and duck dishes which apparently incur an extra charge, although none of us cared for those anyway.

Mr Shah, our friendly maître d’ (whom I assume is also the owner) was helpful and polite. He’s a professional operator who knows how to look after his customers. He made us feel welcome and made sure that everything ran smoothly. Our voucher was honoured with no nasty surprises, except that he insisted that we use it on a weeknight, even though, it is supposed to be valid any night of the week. Mr Shah got around that by insisting that he was fully booked for every Saturday night till the end of the decade! But I doubt whether this place ever gets full. I say this because when we arrived, it was completely empty. And as it’s a fairly large space with seating for maybe 100 or more guests, it felt a bit weird being the only diners. And it pretty much stayed that way for the first hour we were there, until another group of four diners pitched up, following by two more couples. So total complement on a Tues night in May was 12 people, plus a few take-away customers.

Having such a paucity of other guests unfortunately made the place rather soulless and bleak, especially since the décor is mod’ish, with tiled floors and lots of glass and stone, no carpets or much else to give it warmth. Great for summer, but a bit cool in winter although as it was quite a balmy night, we were comfortable enough. Being Mr Shah’s only guests did mean though that we had his full and undivided attention for most of the evening. So service was fast and efficient, with no long wait between courses.

Being a quiet night also meant adequate parking spaces within easy walking distance of the restaurant. That’s no mean feat in Coogee, one of the most congested beachside suburbs in Sydney, although Clove’s in Beach Street, about 100m up the road from the Beach Hotel and well away from the main eating and entertainment hub around Coogee Bay Rd and Arden Street.

To summarise: Clove is a reliable choice for an Indian restaurant in the area. It serves tasty meals in adequate portions. Atmosphere is relaxed and casual but a tad dreary when it’s empty, although always easy to get a table without a booking. Service is generally polite and efficient. Toilets are clean, well provisioned and strategically located in the middle of the restaurant, although they’re lacking in privacy. Lighting is strong and the menu is clearly set out. Altogether, a professionally run eatery that deserves more support than it gets.

This Indian restaurant is located conveniently about a five minute walk from Coogee beach, good thing I went for a swim beforehand too as the dishes are very filling.

The service was very polite and helpful with tables set up nicely and we were never ignored. Service 4/5.

The entres were a little boring or bland but the mint and mango chutneys did go some way in improving them. 2/5

The mains were much better with the sauces being quite flavoursome and rich, went perfectly with the delicious cheese naan. I made the mistake of ordering the dishes in moderate spice because the meats seemed to be marinated throughly with the spice as well as the sauce. Waiters offered yoghurt to ease the burn haha. But regardless of that the curries I would give a 4/5

Mango lassi 4/5 the second best I have ever tasted

We came with a voucher so everything was about half the price of the dishes. But it would have been about $40pp if we had not.

Al little on the pricey side but for the location and service id say it is well worth it for the next full paying occasion, maybe I'd skip the entres though!

Service is terrible,
Small portion over priced Indian food.
Wouldn't recommend anyone to go there.
Go if you want terrible service overpriced Indian food

Good Indian food. Not much more to say really. I can't be bothered writing 140 characters . Enough said. ...................................

Finally found a great curry house! Have been searching for a good curry since I arrived from the UK at the start of the year.

If you are not in a rush, this place hits the mark. Exceptionally tasty curry and side dishes: beef banaroshi (ask for it hot) was delicious with thick sauce and lasting warmth; lamb balti: tender and tasty; prawn mughlai: has a great kick but we didn't leave a single bite.

Highly recommended

I'm a big fan...used to frequent the Surry Hills one. Been a few times to Coogee. Not a fan of the fish dishes but everything else is great. Try the malai kofta !

edit 2016 : Had home take away last week....I was concerned that the quality may have slipped as I notice they are doing shop-a-docket deals ...but thoroughly enjoyed all our curries last night. Still great !

Worst Experience Ever. Very disappointed on both services and food.

Ordering from them on Menulog for the first time and provided additional information of the delivery address upon checkout. My address is on Street A but the entrance of the building is on Street B, I have never had issue with any other delivery place.

20 mins after the expected delivery time, I received a call from the driver, who appears to have issue understanding English. I explained and provided instruction to him twice on how to get to my place from where he was, he said ok. 10 mins later, no call or anything from the driver, I called him back and he said he couldn't find it, provided him another instruction session. 15 more mins passed, I got quite upset and called the restaurant, apparently the driver has returned as he could not find my place. The person who answered the call asked for instruction again which I given and I was promised they would recook the food and re-deliver.

Little over 5 mins after hanging up, got a call from the same driver asking for instruction AGAIN. I confirmed with him that the food was fresh as promised cuz I wasn't convinced the food was fresh provided how quick it was. He confirmed the food was fresh and 20 mins later I got another call saying he was outside my door, apparently he went to the wrong place again.

Anyway, an hour later (2 hours after ordering) I finally got the food, it feels hot-ish to the touch so I didn't think much. However once I open everything up they are lukewarm and the texture of the food suggest they simply reheat it with microwave and there was next to none flavour.

Would never order from them again.

Follow up: I called Menulog to complain about it and the store manager claimed that we provided them with the wrong address which was not true and I had the invoice to prove it.

Fabulous. I was shocked by the great quality of the curries and service; an absolute winner that brought me back to the three months living in India. Absolutely amazing!

Definitely recommend!. My husband loves Indian and kept complaining how he couldnt find any good Indian food in Sydney and after hearing about the place in Coogee, we decided to check it out and go there for our anniversary. It was literally the best thing to do! My husband and myself love the place, considering that I didnt even like Indian that much till i tried it out at The Clove. Cudos to the staff and chefs for the excellent service and Ive already recommended it to a bunch of my friends. Im probably a really familiar face there already.

Bland and over-priced. We have just ordered butter chicken, rogan josh, garlic naan and rice. The rice was good, the naan utterly tasteless and the two main dishes were bland and two-dimensional. One of the worst Indian meals I have had in a long time and very expensive. Steer well clear of this one. No decent restaurant would let this rubbish out of the kitchen.

Worst experience ever!!. My fiancé and I bought a groupon voucher for this restaurant and were looking forward to trying a new Indian place that was nearby. We had dinner there tonight and it was by far the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant. I don't know if it was because we had a voucher and therefore they weren't making as much money from us (which is kind of stupid because the reason you offer a deal is to get people to come and try you out and then if you make a good impression they'll come back and pay the full price, perhaps even bring friends or family) or maybe it was because we were young and they thought they could just take advantage of us or something. The way we were treated was absolutely disgusting. I read through the voucher terms, conditions and inclusions before purchasing it. It said we could have any entree, main or dessert ( no set menu and no exclusions). Firstly we were told that we couldn't have the entrees we chose because there were lots of people coming ( which wasn't true) and we had to have the 3 things provided. Our mains weren't cooked the way we asked ( my fiancé wanted his to be hot but it was very mild). Then we were asked if we wanted dessert. We said yes and the waiter just gave us some random dessert. We didn't get to look at the menu or choose anything so we ended up having to eat something we didn't want. All in all we were very disappointed. We will definitely never go back and wouldn't recommend it to anyone!

Best Indian in Sydney!!!. As an Englishman in Sydney I have been searching for a good curry and finally I have found it. Authentic dishes, great service and delicious food. A must for anyone who likes real curry.

Be Quick, this place won't last.. One hour wait to be spoken to after being seated. No water to the table as requested.
People seated after us served before our order was taken. Smallish portions of ordinary fare.
The couple seated next to our table left without paying after calling over the manager and showing him the mould on her entree. The night was like Fawlty Towers gone wrong. The most unprofessional team in Sydney.
We went next door to Annie's for coffee and a good time.

Love this place - ambiance and food galore. I bought a coupon which can sometimes be risky as some places want to turn coupon goers over as soon as possible. Definitely not the case here, they saw value in return customers and my partner and I had lovely attentive service the whole night.

As for the food, while the portions are on the smaller side as is with some Indian places the flavours we're exquisite and we ordered three mains: a chicken, a beef and a paneer dish with rice and we ended up being more than satisfied! The meat was real, no stringy gross bits and cooked to perfection with a very authentic feel.

Having gone with my partner (for context were a couple mid 20's) I can say it was a lovely atmosphere and I will certainly be returning!

Longest wait of my life for food!. I understand they were rushed off their feet, but why keep taking telephone take away orders if you can't serve the guests already there? saw several tables get up and leave, and we ended up getting some of our meal to go as we were so tired of waiting to be fed, but all the food we did get was really delicious! really disappointed with service but will be back for takeaway!

Absolutely delicious! Mango chicken is magical, serves are generous and satisfying :) will go back next time I'm in Sydney!
