Review Jp Mccaffrey's - Coogee

frazer palmer
Not only have the prices increased the portion sizes have decreased. $22 for cod and chips !! Having said that most of it was thrown in the bin, absolutely disgusting 🤢 Traditional Fish and Chips that were definitely NOT made to order. 5 minutes after giving my order it was ready. The chips were reheated and so was the fish , the batter was soggy and no crisp to it at all. I didn’t realise it was under new management nor did I read the reviews (silly me) . The previous owner, an Irish lady actually made you really decent food . Atlantic Cod think about it 🤨 Caught, frozen and a 10 week boat trip to get here. Stay away if you have any sense.

Oh my goodness, swimming in oil. We ordered the seafood basket for $23 and look at pictures. Would of given a 0* if I could feel sick from it as we ate most of it and feel bloated after eating the greasy chips. Bit like scooping a mouth full of butter from the fridge. Little less oily food would be amazing here as the shops location is prime. Avoid it everyone 🤙

Conveniently located on one end of Coogee. While service was friendly and menu options were many, I just needed a quick snack of potato scallops. It was oily. Really too oily. Taste was good. Just too oily.

Trialled both fish n chips shops coming into summer and I really enjoyed JP's. Fish burger was top quality would recommend. Chips were quality and way better vs other store which was big factor for me... but in my opinion a little bit too expensive. Overall I think worth the cost for just a really good feed next to the beach.

The best fish battered barramundi I've had in a while. Two well sized fillets battered and deep fried to order. Best thing is you don't have to get a whole Mountain of chips with it which I don't eat anyway. It was cooked to perfection and they also have the option of other fish like flathead cod salmon etc. Worth a visit if you haven't been here before 4.

Worst chips i've ever had! they were brown and not edible, for $10 I thought I would be getting somewhat decent chips however, had to throw them out and was then left with no food as this was all the money I had brought. Lady in store made me feel very unwelcome and was rude, read some of the reviews and can see many also had a similar experience to me. However, I was stunned at the way this business replied to some of their negative criticism.

Worst fish and chips I've had. Firstly I found it very strange that they don't serve any crumbed fish. We went with the fried burramundi, which was so oily and gross we couldn't even finish half a fillet. The chips were served with no salt at all and were almost completely cold. The calimari rings were also terrible and the tiny serve of tartare sauce tasted like a cheap home brand. Do yourself a favour and go next door to the Lure!

So bad, waited over an hour for delivery to Coogee. Then that abomination turns up. They say they only use hand cut chips hahah what frozen fries from woolies? Even threw in a few decent ones to do me over even more. Cancel the order if you can’t fulfil it properly. Jokers

Avoid. Just disgusting and a mess. I had the fish of the day and chips and just soggy, wet blah fish, and very average chips. Definitely go elsewhere. Way too expensive for bad food
Roxy
A broad range of choices and even gluten free options. However, I found it quite greasy. Probably perfect for those seeking the greasy hangover cure, but too much oil for me.

The Mexican chicken schnitzel is a thumbs up and the fish and chips is a huge let down.

For a restaurant whose claim to fame is the fish dishes, to have soggy chips and oil battered badly tasting fish is unacceptable.

After walking by this place everyday I thought i'd give it a try. Went for the battered cod and chips for $15. Received one very small piece of well-cooked cod and a heap of soggy under-cooked chips. Very disappointing.

Food very overpriced. Wasn’t allowed to order small fish and chips with grilled fish option, had to order barramundi meal instead. Chips were very underdone and under seasoned and soggy. Barramundi fillet was tiny. $50 for an unappetising oily and overpriced meal. Will go to grilld next time.

Great service but below average food.

We had fish burger one time and the fish burger was blend- fish was great, lightly battered and very fresh, but all else were not nice - bun was cold; just a tiny little bit of dressing in it which made the whole thing so blend. There were only 4 components in this burger- cold bun, battered fish, lettuce and a bit of sauce. No tomato or cucumber or onions or anything else to make it more juicy.

At the same time we bought a fish burger from NEXT DOOR and that one was interesting - the other way round- battered fish burger with hot bun, Spanish onions, cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce, very tasty lime dressing....but the fish was so wrong. Thick batter ad very hard and dry.

For this JP shop we went there giving another chance a week later. The calamari was very disappointing. Very hard and dry that u can’t even get it into the dipping sauce (as the opening of the sauce container was too narrow while the calamari was too hard to bend).

The service was very great though. I saw The cashier Nuria was checking the quality of food before she packed them. She saw a calamari got twisted and asked the kitchen to re do it. That’s great service she wasn’t doing just cashier job but checking quality before delivery too.

When she came to clean the tables she also asked for feedback about the food and I told her.

Her service made a big difference to the whole experience though the food wasn’t that great.

Absolutely terrible food for the price and the service was even worse! Don’t even bother going there! $18 for a seafood basket with burnt calamari and filled with chips nearly no seafood
Hello Miss May
i really like the ice cream here at JP McCaffrey's... the milky soft serve was the most delicious vanilla soft serve i had! the perfect summer day spent at coogee.

Ridiculously oily potato scallops. Tiny piece of oily fish on a stale burger bun. Slow service. Nice sign out the front though. Would not come again.

This is fish & chips done the English way. Which is also the way fish & chips were cooked in Australia until about the 1980s. The fish is lightly crumbed not crispy, and the chips are soggy. Clearly, by most of the comments below, this style of f&c doesn't appeal to many Australians. It doesn't really appeal to
me either, but I'm happy to give four stars to McCaffreys because they're authentic
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
A traditional fish and chip shop with an clean, inviting interior. Seating is mostly inside with a couple of tables outside. The quarter pounder was really tasty but I prefer my chips crispy. Next time I'd try the seafood.

If you're craving an escape from the manufacturerd frozen chips which are ubiquitous in Australia, go here. These guys have proper, freshly cut, soft and fluffy chipper chips. Ignore the reviews here from people who've clearly never had a real chip in their lives. Drown them in malt vinegar, grab a club orange and you're good to go.

For a shop to have such a great location and fit out the food lacked well... everything.

Craving fish and chips my partner and I decided to give JP McCaffrey's a try. Ordered 2 pieces of cod fish, small chips and 2 drinks- total was $44! What a rip off! I paid thinking 'this better be the best fish and chips ever' and to my horror I was wrong. 20 minutes later...

Fish was so over cooked. You could've knocked a thief out with how thick the batter was, when you get through the uncomfortable thickness to the fish it's all dried out. There was no flavour, it was like old fish encased in clay?

Chips were like what everyone else said, soggy yet dry? There was no saviour. Maybe the can of coke which helped me swallow the dry thick batter.

What was meant to be a great day out by the beach was ruined with the fact that we spent almost $50 for garbage. I didn't even finish my meal I was that disappointed. Will not be back and if I can help people by not wasting their money here I'll do so with this review.

JP McCaffrey's get your act together. Should've just gone to Oporto.

This place is an absolute disgrace. Fresh cut chips daily? My feckin hole - they were absolutely horrid, overcooked and tasted bland, hard and overall disgusting.

Asked for taco chips - got a portion of shite chips and a tub of taco sauce. Taco sauce? If that is what you guys call taco sauce where the feck in Ireland are you getting taco chips? Rancid.

And finally the fish. Fresh north Atlantic cod? I have smelt fresh cow shite that smelled better than that fish. Over cooked, definitely not fresh - the Traditional Chip Shop tastes and looks far superior.

Look I don't know what your pandering for down there. You have a chip shop on the beach but your food quality is a shower of shite. I won't be back and will spend my money elsewhere - I could have went to Oporto next door and got twice as much food but at least there you know your paying for cheap fast food.

McCaffreys your overpriced. Your food is shite and the game won't last long if you don't change because as much as people might like the idea of a home chippy or 'the taste of home' yours is nowhere near and it won't take long for the jig to be up.

We came today and ordered an Australian belly buster including 3 Calamaries, 4 Fish bites, 6 Scampi, Chips and 2 Scallops. Their Calamaries were not too bad but the fish bites and scampi were super small. Chips were very oily and not crispy at all. Fish was dry and had little taste. And their 2 SCALLOPS turned out to be POTATO SCALLOPS, very misleading! They should have said "potato scallops" instead of just "scallops" in the food description. In short, $29.99 for the whole meal and most of it was just made from potatoes, not worth it! Their southern chicken drumsticks looked better though, maybe we should have got those instead, but the lady said it would take 20 mins for the drumsticks, oh well...

This place is pretty on point and you could of walked into any chippy in the UK or Ireland. Chips are real good and the battered sausage fleet like one from back home. Just wished the drink selection was a bit bigger.

After spending a lovely morning hanging out on Coogee Beach, we walked to JP McCaffrey's Traditional Fish & Chips to satisfy our craving for seafood. Upon entering, we felt as if we'd just walked into a local Dublin fish and chip shop. The menu includes a variety of fish and chips, burgers, specials and sides to take away or eat in. We didn't know where to start!

Great Irish faire that will make you feel like your in Dublin at the local fish and chip shop. Everything here is authentic. The chips are hand cut and fresh and the oil is clean... i had the garlic cheesy chips and it was like heaven. I also had the jumbo battered sausage that was crunchy but still so light in the middle. Make sure you order the Cod because its really fresh and flavoursome. Bossman Jono and his mum Mary are very attentive and have a great following with the locals.

I'm sorry but these were the worst hot chips I have ever tasted. They were cold, soggy and not salty enough. Which is what everyone else seems to be saying. It was like they had been sitting out on a park bench for a few hours. The fish was nice. The potato scallops were greasy. I'll be sticking to the good old fashioned fish and chip shops that may not have the best interiors but you know are going to provide a good feed!

I really should ave checked zomato before we came into this place. Just a quick browse though the menu and I knew I was in for the same as what the Traditional Fish and Chip shop would offer. We just managed to grab a snack of fish bites and battered potato scallops. Both of which were tiny servings. I guess you pay the premium for the Coogee location. It gets busy though but a few shops down there is a more commonly seen fish and chip shop which might be better value and taste for money. We were initally detered due to their lack of customers. The quality was ok... but I probably wouldn't come back. They got their fair share of customers but mostly with small orders like a takeaway box of soggy potato chips. I'm just not a fan I guess but doesn't mean others won't appreciate it.
Lunch Pie
Bog-standard chipper. Yes. Chips were soggy but yum. Quite Irish style food which may not appeal to the standard Sydney-sider but decent enough.
Ausbeagle
This is a cute little shop. While I agree with other reviewers about the chips (they were cold and average - not fluffy or crispy), the scallops and batter used were yum. I'd eat here again when in Coogee

One word, disgusting. The chips were soggy and I had one bite of the quarter pounder burger and it belonged in the garbage. Although the fish was cooked nicely but it simply was not enough for me to return.
Sloppyjoe
We had ordered the Irish and Scottish belly buster, from looking at the menu you would think there would be just a couple of differences between the choices (one had haggis and the other had fried onion) however this was not the case. One had a significantly bigger piece of fish, while the other had while the other one had a slightly overcooked sausage.... On the bright side both items had soggy chips. But the main and only positive point was that the fish was cooked nicely. Would I go back? I doubt it.
