Review Choofas Smokehouse & Seafood - Coolangatta

We have been to Choofas four times in the past year. On our first visit we met the manager Jason. Pleasant guy, good business man and holds customer service as a high priority. The food is always cooked as we've requested and usually can't finish what's on the plate! Side note, steak lovers MUST try the 800g Rib on the bone at least once. Make sure you go hungry! Drink service is sometimes hit and miss. It pays to keen an eye on the wait staff if you're keen to get stuck into their large selection of drinks. On our third visit we had some issues with the service. After having a discussion with Jason the next day, we were invited back to try them again. The service we received was fantastic and I hope that it continues. Jason's focus on customer service is evident and if you have any troubles, don't hesitate to touch base with him. It's great to see that Choofas has weathered the Covid storm as Coolangatta has struggled to the NSW border being 50m down the street. Hopefully it's onwards and upwards for them now that the QLD border has opened up. Thanks again and we look forward to visiting next time we're in Cooly.

Very disappointed - had looked forward to this for weeks as we love our smoked meats and especially ribs. Unfortunately it didn't live upto the hype. For starters we were there for a while and as we didn't get any service went upto the bar and got our own drinks.... only to be told not to as there was table service...... well not at our table there wasn't! Our waitress turned up and gave us menus but then disappeared. The rest of the party turned up and still we waited for quite some time before eventually she came and started talking orders. We asked for two ice waters as we couldn't bear to spend another $26 for a beer, spirit and lemonade round. When the water turned up, it was luke warm and no ice. Tasted disgusting! Then I watched in dismay as everyone eventually got their meals but mine didn't turn up..... after half an hour my daughter finally had to chase down a waitress (as no one came back to our table to ensure everyone had a meal... little note, important rule of hospitality.... ensure your guests are happy) and she requested why mine was missing. They said they would get onto it. I then had to wait for another half hour before it turned up! By which time everyone else in our party was finished and ready to leave so I ate alone.... what I could of it. Because to my utter dismay it was terrible! The smoked ribs were stone cold and dried out with just a sparingly drizzle of sauce. The potato and broccolini was nice but that was all I could eat off my $45 plate. My husband had the challenge burger $50!! which looked amazing however he said the meat patty was tasteless. I also had a $20 cocktail which was terrible...... bit hard to screw up a pina colada but this lot managed it! In fact they outdid themselves in showing everyone how you DONT please your customers! To top it off, when paying for our meal, the waitress apologised for the wait but even when I told her I couldn't eat them because they were cold and terrible, she merely said I should have told them so they would cook them again!! What? And wait another 1/2hr you mean? No thankyou! A discount on our meal would have been nice.... or a free drink but no.... customer service is dead here obviously... as cold and dried up as their ribs. So $150 later, and a 1.5 hour round trip wasted as I went home for coffee and a sandwich. So disappointed. Won't be back.

For a cuisine that is notoriously difficult to perfect and make to order, Choofas does both extremely well. Ordered a couple of different types of meat to test out the range and all 3 were amazing. Even the salad sides were done well without taking away from the star of the dishes being the meat. Staff were extremely friendly and even the new employee receiving her training did an outstanding job as well as the lad showing her the ropes. We booked our table for our trip from out west and it was everything we wanted it to be. We will be sure to return every-time we come past. To top off the evening, we had a quick chat with the gentleman at the door and it was clear to see the passion for the restaurant and the product. Easily one of the best spots around, anyone who says otherwise hasn’t got a clue what they are talking about.

The meals we wanted were off the menu but the ribs are amazing and the wings really yummy . Nice and quick and friendly.

This place never disappoints. One of my favourite places in Coolangatta. Definitely recommend the hot wings! So tasty. Everything I’ve had on the menu is great.

I was really looking forward to lunch after having this place recommended to us. I decided to have my sons 18th birthday lunch here. Very disappointed. We were one of the first ones there & waited nearly 2 hrs to be served while others were served before us. The food was ordinary at best. Everyone had eaten by the time my meal came after the wrong meal was was sent out. I understand they have struggled with being short staffed due to Covid & only one inexperienced chef was on. This should have been communicated straight away. $235.00 for what we were served just doesn't cut it. Sorry guys, if the food was worth cost & the wait it would have been fine. Every meal was average with not a lot of flavour. We won't be back.

If I could give a negative star review I would. Waited over 2 hours for our meals. The meals we did receive were cold and quite disappointing. The manager there is an extremely rude pathetic excuse for a human being. We are here the same time last year with a large group and the food and service was amazing. After our experience there tonight we will definitely not be returning! We booked this table months ago so it was not a shock for them that there was a big group attending tonight. My recommendation is to go to the local take away. You'll get better service and hot fresh food.
