Review Tao - Cranbourne

Won't be going back! Spent $72 for 3 very bland BBQ pork on rice with broccoli, x3 drinks, x10 dumplings and a x1 chicken skewer. BBQ pork meal didn't look anything like the picture at all. My son got a cold piece of meat on his plate, and the dumplings were not fried and very soggy inside, my 4yr old asked if it was porridge Dumplings. We were really trying to find something positive about the food but we left disappointed. 8/07/22

Just ordered beef pho, we were expecting a little bit more for a $18 noodles

Pho was bland not very good at all, it was tasteless....wife and i had to add chilli oil salt and lemon just to give it more flavour, combination fried rice average. Bad service from staff who served us. Restaurant and food look great but it's just not for us, won't be dining here again.

Go here if you want to be ignored by all staff 2pm so not busy then watch as other people who came after me are served. Pore. I mean if the food was something special fine I will wait but for a fried dim sim and drink. I don’t like to be ignored

So thankful to have such a nice authentic Asian restaurant out this way. Never disappointed. Tried multiple dishes (on different days/times) like No#8 Beef flat noodle egg gravy, bento boxes🍱, roast Duck🍚, especially recommend #5 Fried Kuey Teow, full of 'wok flavour' and seafood medley (prawns, squid, fish ball/cake, pipis) Sushi rice lacks vinegar tho to compete with multitude of sushi places in the centre.

A combination of Vietnamese, Japanese, Malaysian and Chinese dishes - all done to an edible but not exactly well executed level. Chicken curry puff was a highlight. The 'Legend ' in the name is very misleading. Legendary looking menu but unfortunately a master of none. *2.5 stars but google don't do half stars

Order Chicken Katsu Don and got this. Terrible and inedible!

We ordered sushi and Hainanese chicken rice. While the sushi was good, the chicken rice were just okay. I has hoped it to be delicious but it wasn't. I must say, I've had better!

Ordered pork dumplings, vegetable dumplings, vegetatian spring rolls, scallion pancakes and salt and chilli chicken.
The dumplings were actually pretty good, the flavours were exactly what i was after with a good amount of herbs without overpowering or ruining the dumplings, however the dumplings were on the small side and at almost a dollar a dumpling a little on the expensive side compared to other dumpling resturants.

Unfortunately we recieved chicken spring rolls instead of vegetarian spring rolls, however they were a hit.

The downfall of the meal however was the scallion pancakes that were flavourless, undercooked in the middle and just too thick.

The salt and chilli chicken had a similar downfall with 0 salt or chilli present on the dry overcooked chicken served on a pointless bed of old rocket.
Also at $20 for handful of chicken we we're left quite unsatisfied.

The atmosphere in the resturant itself was fantastic, but all over the meal was a bit disappointing and I'll forever be salty about the unsalted salted chicken

Sorry but I have been here for at least 5 times trying different dishes but none of the dishes tasted delicious - all was very salty and oily. This was not how Asian food should taste like. It is a restaurant but food quality is no less than food court stalls

Unfortunately we have to rate this outlet as 1 as we got gastro after eating Singapore Noodles and Prawn Wonton Noodle Soup ($26.90 for both meals). If I have seen the reviews earlier, I would avoid ordering from this outlet. The Singapore Noodles were alright, it would been better if they used big prawns rather than tiny shrimps. The Prawn Wonton Noodle Soup was off, with the wontons tasting funny and the noodles are clumpy.

This place had mix reviews but we decided to give this place a go as we were shopping and decided to have lunch.
First impression was that this place was spacious and the decor was nice and clean.
As we walked in, we didn’t know if they would show us to our seat or just sit anywhere and they would take our order?
But after observing others, we gathered that we had to get our own menus and order at the front counter.
The staff there were not very welcoming or friendly. It felt like they were tired and didn’t want to be here.
I ordered their salmon bento box that came with miso soup and my other guest had wonton noodle soup.
The prices were reasonable but when the food came out, my bento box looked very tired and not much love put in.
The salad looked dry with a bit of salad dressing on it. The miso soup lacked flavour and was just luke warm. The sushi that came with it was ok. Normally it accompanies with soy sauce and wasabi and ginger but not even any of those.
The salmon however was nicely cooked and tasty.
The wonton noodle soup was a big serving and tasted quite nice with generous serving of wontons.
If they could lift their customer service standards and have delicious Asian food here, I’m sure this restaurant will do well.

Much Ado About Food
Both the service and the food here were a horrible disappointment. We recently noticed that they were doing all-day yum cha and were keen to try it out - with the added bonus of it being local to us and only a 5 minute drive from home! We usually drive to Springvale for yum cha, which is almost 2 hours round-trip. We thought it'd be a great little addition to our list of local favourites we like to frequent (if the food was on par with our beloved Springvale yum cha spots).

My parents came down one weekend and we took the opportunity to try out the all-day yum cha. We were uncertain about how/where to order so we asked the cashiers working the front counter (where the pre-made food is) and they directed us to the back where we were greeted with a couple of workers playing on their phones and oblivious to our presence.

It was pretty empty so we decided to grab one of the bigger, round tables as it was the most spacious and it was ideal since we had the stroller with our baby. This table happened to be next to one of the workers, who was playing on her phone, she glanced at us and just moved to a different table farther away. Now, I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she was on her lunch break.

Another worker was sitting near the back counter, facing the wall, with his earphones in - this is generally how I spend my lunch breaks so he was more than likely on his break. Someone who looked like the chef walked out and looked over at us and went back inside the kitchen.

My dad got hungry so he went and ordered a plate of pre-made stir-fried noodles from the front, and once again asked them how we go about ordering yum cha - they just palmed him off, were quite abrupt, and pointed to the back area where we were already sitting. We had been sitting around for well over 20 minutes at this point and it was getting frustrating - we just wanted to be served.

Eventually, a girl working the front counter was sent over to us. She was lovely and seemed apologetic that we had to wait around. She gave us a menu to tick off what we wanted to order. And so began a long and tedious wait for our food to arrive. I'm not sure how long we actually waited for, but I'm pretty sure it was much longer than one should be waiting for yum cha food.

Our food eventually came, with probably only 20-30 minutes left before we had to go home to make up a bottle for our baby. This was incredibly frustrating because we had planned to pop into the surrounding shops after we ate, but the whole ordeal of trying get someone to acknowledge our presence so we could order food had taken up all of our time.

Now, the food itself was not appetising at all. The wait wasn't even worth it. In hindsight, we should have just left within the first 5 minutes when all the workers were ignoring us and/being abrupt when we were trying to get their attention to order food.

We ordered steamed prawn dumplings (har gow), deep fried pork dumplings/footballs (Ham Sui Gok), prawn rice noodle rolls (Cheong Fun), deep fried battered squid tentacles, and my favourite yum cha dish (although, I generally prefer this to be prawn, I won't turn down pork versions) - deep fried pork beancurd skin rolls (Fu Pei Guen). Everything tasted like it had been in a freezer for 100 years. The steamed prawn dumpling skin/pastry was tough and tasted stale, like it had been sitting out for weeks and reheated 5 times.

The deep fried pork dumplings, prawn rice noodle rolls, and deep fried battered squid tentacles were tolerable, but again, tasted like it had been stuck in a freezer for a century. The deep fried pork beancurd skin rolls were one of the greatest disappointments I've encountered in my life so far. For one, they weren't deep fried, they were steamed and soggy (even though it explicitly said on the menu that it was meant to be deep fried), it tasted, and looked, like a mother bird had, prior to being wrapped in the soggy beancurd skin, eaten the filling and regurgitated it.

Not to mention the stir-fried noodles my dad had ordered earlier having next to no vegetables through it, if we didn't know better, we'd have thought there was a global crisis in the form of vegetable shortages.

Also, none of the steamed food were in bamboo steamers, they came out in metal steamers shaped like the traditional bamboo ones! Every Asian knows that steamed yum cha dishes taste better when steamed in the bamboo steamer!

This experience (both the service and food) really ruined my entire day.

Would not recommend to my worst enemies.

www.thejennichronicles.com

Ordered teriyaki beef udon and entree chicken spring rolls.soup was super tasty with a very generous serving just a little to salty, the spring rolls were tasty and crunchy but would have liked a dipping sauce to go with them. Overall nice meal 😊

I ordered number 8. A beef flat noodle with egg gravy. Sat down to eat, waited for my food for 40mins. Staff kept saying it's coming after I saw plenty of patrons come and order off the board not the combination dishes that are ready. They came with a completely different dish and later had one of the staff argue me saying I didn't order right, infact she put it in wrong, I ask for my refund so I could leave as my little one was getting impatient, I asked for an apology and was met with an excuse saying it's busy and blaming the kitchen staff. I stated that it's the fault of the teller lady who took my order and once again ask for an apology. There was no apology given... only "next time do not come back here again then". This was my first and only time I will ever come here.
The place didn't have a napkins available, the high chairs where covered in food and grease, the floors where sticky, the table and chairs where not clean with stuck food on the chairs... I'm glad I didn't eat here! If the service was appalling, they couldn't get an order right when it wasn't actually busy in the kitchen and the establishment was filfthy... me being pregnant is a blessing they stuffed themselves up! I couldn't imagine how they food handle their ingredients... coming from a hospitality background for over 7 years and being Asian myself! This was more then low at standards! The attitude given was appalling and I don't like making reviews unless they are positive, but in this case I had to speak up to this place.
Do not go there! Staff are very unprofessional, rude and unorganised! I wouldn't trust the food as it does not look like a hygienic establishment!!!!!!

An asian place that doesn't know how to make asian food! Lacks love and flavour a huge disappointment! Need a new menu and new chef all to bland for my liking!

Would not come back here. The dish I ordered had a strong burnt flavour, thus I could not finish it. There was very little meat in it and it was just quite revolting overall. Do not recommend it and if you're near, give it a miss.

My parents and I decided to go here after a bit of shopping. If you are ordering takeaway, you can order either Chinese or Japanese food. If you are dining in, their menu is all Chinese food. However, you can order Japanese food if you want to. My meal for tonight was the Beef stir fried rice noodle. The meal overall was really good and flavoursome. I especially loved how tender the beef was and how crunchy the vegetables were. That meal was satisfying overall, but I think I should have tried something else. I also ordered dessert, and my one was lychees and ice cream. The waitress did say the lychees were from a can, but I honestly don't mind if they were fresh or from a can. The lychees were really sweet and complimented well with the ice cream. I personally would have had less ice cream and more lychees, but it is a lovely dessert to end the night.

For three meals and three desserts, it only costed just over $60. It is really a fair price overall. The waitress tonight was lovely and nice in general. Overall I would come back here again and try their Japanese food next time.
