Review Surfeit - Cronulla

Petr Savchenko
I’ve moved to Cronulla 2 months ago. So my every weekend morning ritual is to have a bathe on Blackwood beach and drink cap of coffee watching on ocean on Cronulla beach. Every time I grab the cap from different restaurants to find ideal cap. Today the dice was casted on Surfeit. There is quite simple restaurant. Coffee has deep taste. It is not sour or bitter. The water was pretty warm, milk is fine but it is not so foamy if to find fault with and plus it is being prepared quite long time in case there were no queues. So my rating is 8/10.

This cafe used to be great and my friend and I were regular patrons for Sunday morning breakfast and coffee. The cafe was sold and is now called Zen or Sen and is Vietnamese inspired. The new owners appear to be Vietnamese and have changed the menu. I don't know why they have done this as Surfeit was previously a thriving cafe and often difficult to find a seat on Sunday morning. They no longer have the great selection of pre made food other than a few cakes. I ordered the salmon with chips and salad a few weeks ago and half the plate was covered with chips, the other half with some salad and a tiny measly piece of salmon on top of this. The special board now has Vietnamese cuisine and the menu also includes a page or two of Vietnamese dishes. There used to be a table for two just inside the door which was great if you wanted to get out of the sun. That table has now gone and replaced with a drink machine. The wait staff used to be western staff and now appear to be replaced by Vietnamese staff. I am not sure who the cooks are now but they do not appear to know how to cook food tailored to the western palate and of the high standard previously enjoyed by patrons. Why, why, why do people buy an already thriving business only to change the menu, the decor etc. When I was in there earlier this week there was only a handful of people and that was including the staff. Very, very disappointing and would only return as a last resort. If the new owners wanted a Vietnamese cafe why didn't they open one and leave well enough alone i.e., if it's not broken don't fix it.😕😕

My wife and I ate there today and were pleasantly supprised. We did only have a light breakfast and coffee but couldnt complain about anything. The service was great and very friendly. My wife is gluten intolerant . To find a restaurant that she can eat a delicious breakfast at was great. Oh ...i read all the other reviews and we actually didnt even get asked to pay until we had finished our meals.. We will return for sure.

I just got back from Surfeit, and I have to say, I've never seen customer service take such a dive. I ordered a big breakfast for myself and my girlfriend and my mate ordered one for himself and something for his girlfriend directly after me (within a minute). After a decent but acceptable wait, our big breakfasts came out (minus the hashbrowns and condiments, so we had to wait back in line for those). After a further half hour wait, and complaining, my friend is told "yours will be five minutes, is that OK?" ... meanwhile the rest of the people that have turned up fifteen minutes after us are all happily eating their meals. After five minutes, two plates make their way towards our table, the moment of truth...aaaand keeps walking past us to the next table. After waiting another five minutes my poor mate had enough and demanded a refund, after being told that it might not be possible because the meals are just about ready, he asks to see the manager. The response, "You're not allowed to speak to the manager, but I'll go see what I can do". ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Notice I haven't typed the word "sorry" yet? Anyways, after another five minutes, the waitress comes out, puts the refund in my friends hand and walks away in a huff, no word said... What a joke, really is a shame because the foods actually edible although I will never be hungry enough to witness rubbish customer service like that again.

The food was delicious and service was great and kids friendly, even though the kitchen wasn't working when we came in. Certainly will come again.

Service OK, waiting time a bit too long (considering the place was more than half empty). Food was disappointing - chicken overcooked and lamb very dull.

Large servings, we shear a meal (comes out on 2 plates) beautiful food.
