Review Watergrill Cronulla - Cronulla

June McMillan
One star for the great view but this is not a restaurant as there is no table service at all for food or drinks. You need to go to the "bistro" checkout to order & pay for your food up front & get given a buzzer so you can collect your own food from the servery when it's ready. You then need to line up at the bar to get your own drinks. A restaurant experience? No way. Food quality is below average for pub style food with a lot of salad just dumped onto the plate with no restaurant quality plating skills. There are 2 other pubs in the Shire whose food & plating expertise leave this place for dead.

The best thing about the Watergrill is the great view of Cronulla Beach & onto Boat Harbour. A million dollar view but the food falls well short. The way that it currently operates it should not be calling itself a restaurant as it is really nothing more than a club bistro. At a proper restaurant you do not need to go to the cash register to order & pay for your meal up front & get given a buzzer to let you know your meal is ready. After doing this you then need to go & line up at the bar to get your own drinks. There is absolutely no table service at all for either food or drinks. So it makes me laugh when other reviewers say how great the service is because there isn't any, you need to serve yourself. The food quality is very average at best & is certainly nowhere near restaurant quality in taste or presentation although the prices are way above bistro pricing but they do give members a 15% discount. It seems to cater for the Pasta or Chicken Schnitty & chip crowd who love big servings with a heap of mixed salad leaves thrown onto the plate. Just look at the photo of my expensive steak which looks like everyting has just been slopped onto the plate, including the broccoli, some of which, is all brown around the edges. You can also see the big pile of rough & uninspiring salad that came with my lady's supposedly quality John Dory fish as well. Plating & presentation skills were very bad & very short of restaurant quality. It is such a shame that the standard is so low as being a Club member I really want to like this "restaurant" but sadly it has disappointed me at the few visits & chances I have given it. The Club could do so much more with this "restaurant" by lifting the food standard & providing normal restaurant table service & opening a bistro elsewhere in the Club. The fact that Club Management no longer responds to any reviews on here or Trip Advisor says a lot when their customers have gone to the trouble of providing what should be valuable feedback. No reply from Management really gives, maybe wrongly, a do not care attitude & nothing is going to change. I must say I am amazed how this venue achieved a 4.2 average rating on Google, just have a look at the feedback on the other rating sites like Trip Advisor & Zomato. Unless the Watergrill transforms into a real restaurant from its current bistro theme & updates the menu which never changes then I & a lot of my friends will not be back.

Once again very disillusioned with food at Cronulla RSL. I had the beef cheek. ($34) Very small portion which was conservatively 1/3 fat. The meat was soft but tastless except for an overdone sweetness with the jus. The vegetables were good quality but raw and hard. They must only have been blanched. Husband's fish and chips okay but overpriced at $34.50

The location and sea views are worth the visit. The espresso martinis are particularly good but food wasn't particularly memorable. I had the seafood linguine which for the price I would of expected fresh pasta, the sauce unfortunately overpowered the fresh seafood in the dish.

Best part is value for money. Members 2for 1 dinner plus Dine and discover. Hard to beat with good food thrown in for good measure.

View was great. Very nice presentation but food was average. Service wasn’t the best.

Really nice view and sunterrace, also a really nice quantity of quality wines, beer and lacquer. The food tastes pretty good and the size is okay. When we where there it was really crowded but it still didn't take very long. In my opinion the food quality tastewise is a litle to low for the price. I would still go there again.

Restaurant prices great views and room but food was very poor quality ,I've had many a feed at local pubs that are ten times the quality, extremely disappointed

Fantastic modern renovated place with good ambience.Getting main meals here is rather expensive, much more expensive than other places, but it's reasonably good quality food/drink.

Cronulla RSL is located right on the beachfront so the views from their Watergrill bistro is simply stunning. However, although the fare is typical of an RSL bistro with an offering of salads, pastas and steaks, you won’t find bistro prices, with a chicken schnitzel that will set you back nearly $30, and more for a parmigiana. And $27 for a burger with fries?! Despite the spectacular view, it is still a bistro where you have to queue to order and collect your own food when the buzzer goes off; at those prices I’d much rather be have someone take my order and bring my meal to me.

Good things: Great water view and nice ambience.

Not so great things: Food quality and taste average, very high prices for pub food, mains are over $30 and food quantity is regular size.

Place is usually over crowded and everyone wants to sit next to the glass to get the ocean view :) So if you don’t care about spending and if its all about great view while you are having lunch or dinner, this is a great place to go! Best wishes!

Only reviewing one item which I absolutely love which is the sticky date pudding (out of this world pudding more like it) and lovely views. A better and more refined RSL.

We are a local group & were looking forward to our first dinner together, so we booked the RSL restaurant thinking we would get value for our money. Unfortunately we were disappointed. After buying our drinks at the bar & seating ourselves, we went & picked up our own menus... then realised they charge fine dining prices?! This is PUB food, nothing fancy! Chicken Shnitzel/Parmigiana over $30, Steak & mash $37.50, Starters begin at $20! This is an RSL club for our retired servicemen... who knows how they can afford a meal! The food was average at best, one friend couldn’t cut/chew her steak as there was so much gristle, everyone left feeling very ripped off. There was a cockroach running across the floor as we were leaving (assuming due to the disruption of the renovations being done)... next time we will book a restaurant with great food & table service for the prices we paid. Will not be back.
This place is pretty good. The view is really nice and the establishment itself is cool as well. The Nasi Goreng was tasty but the chicken tasted a bit strange. The sausages are really good here as well.

My hubby and I went to watergrill at Cronulla rsl last Friday and took 4 others. The food was atrocious - one member of party could not eat her steak and at $37 this was all fat and grissle. They gave her money back but she would have preferred the meal to be good. Risotto was like porridge, chicken Parma over cooked, and chips were cold. Wine we chose off wine list no one had heard of (Petaluma rose) and rest of the list was uninspiring. Loved this place when it first opened but it will take me a big bribe to get me back now

Not too impressed. FOH staff great, view spectacular but what was on the plate? And how is was put there? Not so good. My partner ordered Risotto. Extremely cheesy and apparently meant to have pumpkin. We had to search very hard to find pumpkin. Plating up was done without gloves and in full view of the public. Garnished with direct contact with shaved sweet potato crisps ... Not good.

Front of house professionalism saved the day. One person in particular who made no fuss about taking meals back and providing a replacement.

My meal - lamb rack. The memorable part about it. The amount of fat.

Lunch in Cronulla at the Cronulla RSL, great view of the beach but a tad over priced for a Caesar salad and tapas almost A$44 !? I'd say good spot for cocktails, the Pimms was good. Food was average.

Dont underestimate being in an RSL as this restaurant is busy every day. With undisturbed views across the blue ocean & horizon it is even difficult to nab a window seat. Plenty of platters to share as well as classic dishes in generous servings. The mezze platter is a hit with pita, dips, haloumi & chorizo but its the platter with crispy pork belly, duck spring rolls & crumbed fried gooey brie that has everyone fighting over the table. Go for a relaxing & leisurely lunch or dinner with daily specials & raffle prices to be won or simply enjoy a few drinks, the view & some good finger food to share.

Meanwhile, my chicken breast with the stuffing was delicious and I loved the Napolitana sauce on top, but the baked vegetables (potatoes, broccoli, celery, onions, etc) were overdone. There was also a penne pasta in my bowl of steamed vegetables, mysteriously.
Secret Diary Of A Foodie
Everything sounded nice on menu, looked nice on plate - and tasted terrible. Prawns had been frozen to the point of no return, pork belly very fatty with tough meat & no glaze(?), steak so thin it could only be considered a 'minute steak'. All very pricy & poor quality. Beautiful fit out and view, but will keep this place in mind for cocktails only from now on.

Great location , shame about the food. No one doubts the room and the view is good but punters are not that stupid. This place is really poorly priced for what the food is - basic pub grub. We would go back for a drink only.
Info
Ripped off. Would have to be worst value in the Shire, let alone Cronulla. $25 for pub salads, $26.50 for a bad pasta??? $11.50 kids meals that includes no drink, desert etc. A good view of the back of the surf club if you can get there very early, like 11am for lunch and 5.30 for dinner. It's every man for himself in there as you can't book a table and you have to walk up to 100m round trip to get your meals collected and back to your table, while you juggle it in probably 2 or 3 trip past the crowded bar lines in the middle.
I'd go back for a drink maybe on a nice day outside, but anything to do with eating there is too hard, way too expensive and really not that nice anyway. Its actually cheaper to have lunch at Sea Level!
Beats having a bowling green there though, now just turn the front one into a car park please.....

After trying to make a booking for 3, was told they are only taking reservations for parties of 8 or more. Great way to run a new resturant. Fail.
