Review Eighty Ate - Crows Nest

Have been here twice in The last two weeks and both times were pleasant. The tea and coffee is great here and so is the food. Oh and that raspberry and coconut loaf was absolutely to die for!!! Corn fritters were delicious but wish I had a little More of the sauce! Poke bowl was great as well. Lovely young staff with good service. Would highly recommend eating here if in the area.

Hands down the best cafe place in North Sydney! Love this place. Have been here a couple of times, and they never fail to impressed. The food is amazing. Despite being busy, their services are always friendly! Highly recommend.

I Had Portuguese Burger/ Chocolate Milkshake and Orange Juice from this place. All the 3 food items were awesome. The chicken was crispy and cooked well. Also, the fries were awesome. Staff was kind and welcoming. Highly recommended and will surely revisit again.

Great atmosphere, smooth coffee, friendly and attentive staff, and delicious food. What more could you really want out of a cafe? We have eggs benedict & corn fritters, both of which were delicious and generous serves. Also a great spot for dogspotting! Come down on a weekend and you'll see more dogs than you can throw a stick for.

Nice coffee and great selection of brunch and lunch items. Always busy and my fav places to go for weekend brunch. Never disappointed.

It has an incredible menu with lots of food and drinks for everyone. Wether you are taking away or dining its an incredible experice with lovely staff. I don't regret buying anything from here because they never disappoint! I would highly recommend this cafe to other people. However, it may be hard to decide between this and Ridge Street Cafe

Excellent brunch fare. Even though it was crowded, we were seated and served quickly. It was unfortunate that I ordered the Halloumi and Olive Tapenade Toastie -- unfortunate because it was so good, I will probably order the same thing every time I go. I *did*, however, manage to get a taste of the wife's Eggs Benedict, and they were fantastic, too. We will definitely be back!

This is the second time we have been here in 2 days. I love this place. Amazing food - really great flavour combinations and fantastic service - with 2 young kids the staff were really helpful and accomodating. Would highly recommend this place to anyone. Only wish we lived in Sydney permanently so I could come here all the time.

This has been our local for the past 6 years... in the past few years we have had kids and moved further away only making to our favourite cafe every now and then... I returned on the weekend after at least 6 months (had a baby). The staff remembered me and my toddler by name! This is a brilliant cafe... very child friendly! Couldn't recommend more!!!

Took an hour to get out food. Not even really that great when it came. Clumsy, forgetful, disorganised service. Won't be coming back again

Best eggs benedict on the lower north shore - perfectly cooked and sooooo tasty! Add in the fabulous service....we'll be back!

The Portuguese Chicken Burger is the goods!.

Came in on a Monday morning and we just missed the lunch crowd, the waitress was super attentive and came with menus and for our coffee orders shortly. We got the moving sideways, eggs Benedict and Wagyu Burger which were all delicious. The coffee was a standout for me, had a soy latte extra hot and it was much needed due to the cold weather. Would def be back again.

It’s nice going to a brunch place where you $20+ meals actually feel worth it! Big portions but more importantly they were delicious. The only thing I would have done differently is perhaps let the chai soy drink brew a bit more...maybe that was my fault... 😀

Just came here on a Monday morning. Sat at the table with my partner, waitress seemed confused and workers all over the place. No one came up to us to even take a coffee order. We said excuse me twice waitresses too busy in their own world and didnt even respond. We said excuse me a third time and one came over. Waited 15 minutes for our coffee as they had been taking all the takeaway orders instead. During our coffee order we also ordered a wrap. We finished our coffees and after waiting 30 minutes from actually ordering the waitress came up to us and said we havent got the wrap you ordered anymore today. This is totally unnacceptable if you are running a reputable cafe business. Mismanagement and poor floor service. This place doesnt know whether they are a takeaway shop or a proper cafe. Will not be coming back. They didnt even ask how everything went or offer something else after letting their customers wait 30 minutes just sitting at a table for their meal to come to then say its cancelled. Absolutely poor effort.

While the staff are very friendly here, the quality of the food really tainted the overall experience. It took half an hour for our food to arrive and it is quite overpriced for the quality of the ingredients used.

The place has a nice family vibe. It was quite busy but the attendant (Gabriela) was being very efficient and had a beautiful smile while dealing with everything. The food was great, with quite a few different options from the basic things wyou usually see out there. I ordered the corn fritters and it was the best I had in Australia so far. My husband ordered the Goats toast and it was equally delicious. The only thing that we believe needs to improved is the coffee it was bitter (not sure if it was because of the type of the coffee bean or the way the barista was making it). Over all it was a great place to go. I would definitely recommend it and would go back any time.

Went there for brunch on Saturday morning and the cafe was pretty busy. It’s in a very nice neighbourhood and it offers both indoor and outdoor seating.
The coffee was good but ‘Moving side way’ crab, eggs on half croissant wasn’t tasty.
I like Shashouka. Unlike many other cafes it’s not oily or too sour.
The beef wrap was a disappointment.

Had a great brunch on a Sunday morning. Came by around 11am, had delish coffees promptly served. There was a medium wait for food but when it finally came out, there were no complaints because the flavour was amazing.
Loved the poke bowl; good portion of tuna and varied flavours and textures.
Corn fritters were also tasty.
Thank you for a great (late) start to the day!

Went for lunch, waited over an hour as order was never originally put through by sever. Had to follow up twice as well as many other diners around us no compensation was Offered. I’ve worked in hospitality before and completely understand being overwhelmed by business and don’t like to leave reviews like this, but at least offer a discount coffee or something.

I really hate to give low reviews on cafes, but this one just didn't hit the mark in any way. Service was incredibly slow. We were sat down for at least 20 minutes before anyone decided to take our order. The staff were more concerned with talking to locals/friends than anything else.

The menu is a fairly typical brunch menu with all the regular items you'd see at any other cafe. Nothing sounded particularly stand out so we ordered some basics. Pancakes and chilli scrambled eggs. They were both okay, but nothing I'd remember or even recommend. None of them were presented/plated very well either, which in Sydney's brunch scene is a big no-no. People choose to come to places because something 'looks good', and unfortunately this didn't.

I was invited down by Eighty Ate, but all opinions are my own.

Look the food is nice and so is the coffee but the service here is so bad. Slow, the staff never come back to check for additional orders or even if everything is ok. It’s all the staff so I blame the owners. Train your staff please. I’m going across the road next time

Oh man... so average that we were disappointed. Work nearby and wanted a change from the food courts and typical take out so we went for a walk along West Street and stopped by this cafe. There's lots of seating in and out... chose a table outside. Had to wave down a waitress to bring us menus and take our order.

Food is very average. I tried the cheeseburger with fries and my friend had the souvlaki. Both were very mediocre. My chips were cold and soggy. My burger patty was dry and just meuh... ok but nothing amazing. You kind of expect more from cafes in Sydney these days with all the competition and due to the price, we were really disappointed. The chicken souvlaki was just loads of cucumber, tomato, olive and feta with two not heavily marinated sticks of chicken.

Coffee is on the sour side (in relation to the beans). Paid around $30 pp for lunch, probably won't come back as there are other options around.

I went to school up the road for six years and made it a habit to check if the coffee had improved once every year. Even with the student discount, not worth it. Its always watery, tastes sour and awful, and I'd rather pay the couple more dollars for a decent coffee. For all the six years it was consistently terrible. As for the food, its average, but overpriced and the staff often forget orders. With the new renovations hopefully they've changed hands and upped their game

Nice decor and ambience and staff were friendly, but they were completely inattentive and unapologetically clueless about the menu. Besides that the food was nothing fancy but quite tasty, and the open setting is nice.

It’s hard to get past the terrible service though- no one offered water, a menu or to take our order for about 30 mins and this was on a weekday when they didn’t seem very busy (took a few attempts just to grab their attention!)
Asked a question about the menu, and got an “i don’t know” as a response from the waitress followed by standing there expecting us to decide without knowing what we were ordering- she didn’t want to check with the other staff a few meters away.

When food came out different to what was ordered, we stated that wasn’t what we’d ordered... the waitress spent a few minutes saying they couldn’t do anything about it. After a bit of back and forth she gave in and accepted that they’d change it.

I dont go to restaurants for the service or care too much normally but this was pretttty bad!

I went here this morning as were looking for a brunch spot in the area. It wasn't too crowded for a Saturday morning. It had lovely outdoor seating which is where we chose to sit. The staff was attentive and were quick with the service. I ordered the brekky Nachos and my boyfriend ordered the chickpea burger. The menu said the nachos are served with creamy scrambled eggs on wholemeal tortilla chips. But what I received was a soggy mess of some weird deep friend chips which were utterly unpleasant to eat. The chikpea burger was alright. Overall quite disappointed with the experience given the hefty prices we paid for the dishes.

I really don't understand the good reviews of this place... We went there for the first time today, having meant to ever since we moved to the area six months ago. It was busy, which is expected on a Sunday, but the service was poor and unapologetic. We sat at a table covered in dirty dishes for at least 10 minutes before anyone came over. The food, when it came, was incredibly disappointing. It seemed like mass produced, tourist trap food. I didn't enjoy my meal at all and given the hefty prices this was a shame. On the plus side, the fresh juice was quite nice and the coffee decent. Overall though, would definitely not come back.

It's always busy here and the buzz is nice.
But the staff are always all over the place.
They miss orders (coffee paid for was never made) and make mistakes (chicken burger with chips came as a wrap and salad).
I usually dismiss these things, but the staff here makes the "we're so busy can't you understand!?" face and don't apologise for their mistakes so the place is a no-no for me.

This is my favourite cafe in Crows Nest. I get coffee here regularly and sometimes brunch. The staff are friendly and fun. I've never had a bad meal here and so what if sometimes we have to wait when things are busy, it happens! They are consistently good and I know that behind the scenes Jim and his crew are working hard to get the orders out quickly.
Kylie
Good service and breakfast was delicious. Loved the complimentary mini smoothie. Staff were friendly. It looks like a popular brunch spot :)

coffee here is great (much better than Sotto), strong coffee and price is relatively decent (similar to surrounding cafes). Service is quick and friendly although they do surcharge for card so make sure you bring cash!

I had the chicken mushroom penne with cream sauce, which tasted like something a person could have made at home. Boxed pasta boiled, topped with a handful of sliced mushrooms and chicken in cream sauce.

The pasta serving size was big though!
Chris
Ordered Benedict with salmon which took 30 minutes as they had run out of hollandaise on a Saturday morning. Finally I received my breakfast (Benedict with bacon) apart from receiving the wrong order the bacon was broiled and fairly tasteless.
Staff were friendly and attentive.
I am not sure why this place was packed out. I will not be returning.

When I was in high school, I was a regular here almost every day. The food was delicious and filling with generous portions and all affordable. However in recent times that I have gone, it's been slightly disappointing in comparison. The menu size has shrunk considerably in the last four years - half the things I used to order are no longer on the menu and the quality of the food has decreased as well.

Still does good coffee and it's in a lovely location with nice decor, but overall not as good as before.

Great staff and great food. Menu is nothing special but delicious nonetheless. Anything in the breakfast menu involving eggs is delicious especially the shakshouka and poached eggs. Coffee is great as well as all the other drinks on offer. For lunch, chips are absolutely amazing but not as great as the wraps on offer - especially the steak or tandoori chicken. Highly recommended!

Good coffee, nice wait staff. Lovely to sit outside on a Spring morning. The place is usually busy on the weekend but they seem to find room for everyone.Has wifi, which makes a nice change from many cafes in the area.

Bad Service. I am a student of the school up the road and I've been ripped off every single time I went. The first time I went I got charged 50c extra but since it was only 50c I was cool about it and headed off since the . This time I got ripped off $2 and while that seems like a small amount that was money that I earned myself. Considering I now have to pay my school fees myself that was money wasted in the worst way possible.
Not only that, the chips (that i bought for my friend) were soggy and filled like a small box when i clearly asked for a large chips. The girl at the counter also glared when I asked for a bag and rudely asked what i wanted. At this rate, even though I used to love the food here, I don't think I'll be back any time soon.
Next time, before complaining about our school taking up space in the cafe, how about treating us equally like we're adults instead and not be bias giving us less just because we're students.

Cafe Eighty Ate is a medium-sized, semi-outdoor local cafe that sits on West Street. I need to confess having ' Ate ' in the name is a real draw-card for me...The stock menu is completely uninspiring and revolves around eggs and other staples (french toast, bacon, pancakes). Pricing is mid-range and an omelette costs $12.90. Luckily there is a few'weekend specials...
Little Eats Sydney
A large and welcoming local café between Crows Nest and North Sydney. Outdoor tables make it easy for mums with prams to sit and relax. It is a favourite of local mums after school and mothers groups who congregate outside. Located on a beautiful tree lined street between Crows Nest and St Leonards, Café Eight Ate is a favourite with local parents. The café is located near the popular North Sydney oval play area and patrons are a mix between local mums and business people. Sit and listen to the great music and enjoy the good positive vibe. They offer a fab takeaway breakfast menu if you want to take and go to the park. Open 7 days a week, they offer their breakfast menu between 7am-12pm on weekdays and 7am – 4pm on weekends. For the little ones, they have toast with vegemite, jam and honey etc, raisin and cinnamon all for $3.90. Babycinos are only $1.

Nasty Service. We placed an order for a large cappuccino and a regular mocha ...the blonde waitress said "we only have large mochas" I then said ok we won't have the mocha we will have a regular cap - she then proceeded to cross out my order for a large cap- I corrected her and she said to me "I am not a retard" in a nasty tone ....when the drinks arrived she had of course got them wrong- I never did get my large cap - won't be coming back

We almost live for the Portuguese Chicken Burgers that they do at Eighty Ate! Awesome! Good Campos coffee, as well. Service sometimes a little slow, but a nice spot to hang out for a while in any case!

HEART this place. Fuss free, hipster free, genuinely lovely food and coffee. The staff are gorgeous.
Been here for breakfast and lunch several times and have never been disappointed - worth the walk from the crows nest main drag.

Totally loved the place. Recommend the pancetta omelette !!spent Mother's Day. As we were a group of 10 with kids. We got the backyard. Spent the whole day there. Wonderful service as well. Could not ask for more.

Always busy for a reason. Great coffee and milkshakes. I love their chips and pasta meals are a treat. :)

Don't Bother. Following a former poor performance with our breakfast menu, my family and I decided to perhaps give this over-rated café another go for lunch instead.
What a MISTAKE!
First we were left unattended at our table for over 15 minutes.
Second, upon being served after 30 minutes from placement of order, our dishes appeared to be slapped together in terms of cooking and presentation.
(Thai Beef Salad)
Third - my mother's dish (pancetta scrambled eggs) was served 15 minutes after our two dishes were brought to the table.

As Molly used to say...Do yourselves a favour...and OMIT THIS PLACE ALTOGETHER....
G. :(

Fantastic price great mediterranean style food. Been back many times. Friendly service - great food, and good pricing. Breakfast offering is not your standard eggs and bacon type but lovely Mediterranean style cooking. Very tasty!!

Great service & food! Rescued us from a poor experience across the road. Thanks

My Favourite Cafe. I have been a Cafe 88 regular for about a year now . The staff are always there to greet you with a smile and a hello. The food is always fresh and made with love. The tandoori chicken wrap is my ultimate favourite.Nothing tastes artificial and the Campos coffee is a life saver, especially in the morning! I was there the other day and noticed a lady trying to eat her lunch whilst also rocking a pram trying to settle her baby who had started to make a lot of noise! A lovely waitress came to the rescue and rocked the pram back and forth so that Mum could finish her meal. The baby fell asleep after 5 minutes! Now that's service!

“Best cafe in Sydney? Possibly.. My husband and I have been going to this place since 2010 and always end up here at some point when in Crows Nest. The quality over these 2 years has always remained high.

Great atmosphere! Excellent food! Wonderful service with friendly and very efficient staff! The quality of the food is amazing and the prices are great. The steak sandwich and the portuguese chicken burger are ours favourites, besides the fenomenal Chicken and Mushroom Risotto! So tasty and well prepared! The cakes are home made. I especially like the lemon and coconut one.

Nice family environment. I would highly recommend this place.

Superb smooth campos coffee. Great friendly service. Nicely spiced chilli jam that accompanied my corn fritters on avocado salsa. The Portugese chicken burger was on a soft and warn toasted bun although the chicken could do with a bit more Portugese sauce/ seasoning (lacked a bit of flavour).
Kylie
Amazing chai. Having been told I can't drink coffee any more, I've become quite the chai connaisseur and I must say what they serve up at 88 is one of the best I've ever had. Plus they let me sit out in the sun and enjoy my book long after I'd finished - great, friendly service, I'll definitely be back again (for lunch next time!).

Always Consistent. Have been to 88 several times now and never disappointed - food is consistently good for a busy cafe. Girls are always friendly and helpful and rarely do you have to wait - I like the way they bring out the water almost before you sit down. The owner always goes out of his way to say goodbye or you might get a wave. Imake a point of thanking staff when I leave.

Competitive Advantage. Cafe Eighty Ate is a very popular local retreat and pioneer of the cafe culture on West Street. It remains the standout crowd-puller of locals, school-aged kids, business-types and parents in the area.
The menu can best be described as contemporary Australian but with distinct hints of Europe. The eggs & haloumi breakfast is a good example suggesting some Greek origins. They looked to be a favourite. There are also plenty of options for wraps and freshly made juices and frappes to quench the thirst.
Beware the temptation to cancel all appointments and just watch the day slip away on one of the outside tables on a sunny day...
