Review Stuyvesant's House - Crows Nest

SARGES’ Family
Had the pleasure of dining here recently for a friends birthday dinner. Generously large portion sizes of delicious European flavours. Quick and friendly service and we were made to feel very welcome. They also offer a very extensive wine list but just be aware of the prices. Personally, after over hearing a conversation that took place right next to our table and at a very loud volume, I believe the staff could be spoken to with a bit more care from management as customers shouldn’t be privy to that level of animosity. It made for an uncomfortable situation

Traditional European foods and run by family. They have been in the market since 1961. Came in a Saturday after pandemic and it is still very busy. Owner really like to engage with customers which is good. However, their staff need to be trained properly. We did could hear the owner shout to their staff. He couldn’t address their staff’s name which is a bit rude. Food is good and general portions.

Classic old school German restaurant. I found it quite expensive for the food quality. I had the steak with cafe de Paris butter, the butter was not good.. very runny with no flavour (then again, it's not a French restaurant) The cut of steak was fatty and for the price, was over cooked. The service was excellent, very efficient and knew her stuff, very professional. Great wine list many by the glass. The night I was there the owner was with his friends at a table...it was very loud and the language was inexcusable I might go again but will stick to classic German options

This restaurant made me fall in love with German food. The owners are so friendly and food is amazing. The environment is very pleasant and enjoyable. Will definitely come back soon. 😍

What can you say? 50 years of not just a restaurant but a dining experience. Rudi and Max are old school - no flouncy service here. Just honest hospitality and a commitment to deliver the best food, the best wine and the best experience.

We went to lunch at Stuyvesant House today and wanted to leave a review. Once or twice a year I pick my wife up for lunch as our work is rarely allowing of lunch together. We walked off the street and straight into a fully relaxed and enjoyable situation as if we were in Europe on Holiday. Matthew organised an amazing Pinot Noir and brought us home made Bitterballen and Pretzels. We ordered the Chateaux Briande and Matthew assured us we did not need an entree. Rudi the owner came to greet us and shared many stories and breathed even more life into an already great experience. The food was really good, we had zero complaints. Have we had better food? Yes we have. have we had a better experience? rarely. Do we appreciate the experiecnes as a top 10 expeirnece in Sydney? Yes, it is an absolute joy. A vfriend of ours told us that this place had one of the best wine cellars in Australis. We went to see it and were blown away by the extent of the collection and the love and atteniton Rudi gives to making things special for his guests. Loving this place as an absolute gem, thanks guiys, great team, great experience and a great landmark to the Sydney food scene!

I love this place. It is not for everyone it is a totally different dining experience. Leave your pretensions at home and step into the wonderful world of Rudi and Max. Absolutely follow Rudi's wine recommendations the bloke is a living legend and don't be upset if he decides to test you. Spend your money on wine you wont be disappointed. This place slaps

Most outrageous experience I’ve ever had. Did management recently change? Short story: The waiter forced the degustation menu on our family even after we insisted we didn’t want it. We weren’t allowed to look at or order from the menu, nor were we told what was in the degustation courses or the price. Long story: My dad wanted to have pork knuckle specifically and so we decided to try out this restaurant. After we sat down, the waiter asked my dad and I if we were drinkers. My dad and I said no but the waiter pours my dad a glass anyway. This is already shocking but we aren’t too bothered at this point. The waiter leaves us to look at the menu after but my dad already knows he wants the pork knuckle and I had decided on fish. My brother and his girlfriend come in and get seated so I give them the menu to look at. At this point the waiter comes back and takes the menu off my brother. At this point, he tells us we need degustation. I repeatedly say we just want pork knuckle and we don’t want a long degustation dinner tonight. He leaves with the menus anyway, and proceeds to serve us the degustation menu. When the first course came out, we were in so much shock that we didn’t even object. In the end, we were forced to eat a meal where price or food wasn’t made known to us. It was over 2hrs long and I had to cancel my plans for the rest of the night. Unfathomably terrible service. I still don’t understand why this menu was forced on us. PS the food was too salty and their fancy “white asparagus from France” was old and fibrous. This is my first every bad review since I like supporting small businesses. But after 6 days and still feeling outraged, I want to make sure no one else goes through the same thing.

Having a wonderful dining experience is more than just eating good food. It’s about ambiance, company, and conversation. Last night my new friends Rudy And Max, the owners at Stuyvesant’s House, delivered an unforgettable experience on all fronts. With one of the most extensive wine lists I’ve ever seen and a spot at the Chefs table in the wine cellar, this culinary experience most definitely makes my top 5. Make sure you reserve the chefs table well in advance, It has very limited availability but absolutely worth waiting for.

The newly rebuilt restaurant has downsized its menu, but upsized the quality. Highly recommend.

Superb jovial service as per the normal course! The Ebeneezer Shiraz was tremendous and we could barely move from all the food consumed....except to visit the cellar (best wine cellar in Sydney)!!

Best long lunch in 15 years was the comment by a colleague! Rudy an absolute champion. Food great. Wine the best. Can't beat it in Sydney for authentic genuine wine experience. Highly recommended.

Food - just like how my grandma will cook it. Lots of ingredients in the Seafood chowder. Lots of sauce and condiments in the ains. Makesure you ask for the soufflé when you get the dessert platter.

Wine are the highlight! Impressive winelist, Rudi has accumulate his cellar for 50 years. We manage to pop a 1979 bottle of Cab from Coonawarra & it still taste fab! I don't think any mid range restaurant in Sydney carries such a huge selection, all a reasonable price too!

Service - there were two tables who has been a patrons for a long time (one 25 years & the other table 40 years), they pretty much know what they are having before they came on. Rudi's "no nonsense “ approach help us "first timer" to navigate his menu. Rudi is a bit intense but lovely gentleman and proud of his restaurant.

uncomfortable and dirty environment.
Rudi the owner brought a horrible experience to my family, without any professionalism with his employees where he took shouting and cursing.
we waited almost 1 hour to be served, in addition, 2 meals were missing, in the first 30 minutes of waiting we saw 2 employees leaving because they could not stand Rudi's screams and mistreatment. it was definitely awful.
The owner called Rudi, swears at his employees in an absurdly offensive way in front of his customers, I can say that they are treated like garbage. everyone who was working as a waitress was on his first day because from what I heard he doesn't have a fixed staff, because of this, the service becomes horrible and we do not see the correct posture of a leader but of a totally unbalanced gentleman. this restaurant will definitely be on my black list.

Had planned to go out for dinner to a ribs place with a couple of friends, when we got there the restaurant had closed down! So we walked a few blocks and decided to try Stuyvesant House. Fantastic service from the moment we walked in. My friends had a platter to share, and I had a trio of meats which was absolutely amazing! The sauces and flavours were divine. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and a great character. This place also has a wine list with over 5000 wines! Great little neighbourhood gem!

We went to Stuyvesant House for dinner and while the food was solid, the treatment we received from one of the waiters ensures that there won't be a return visit. Firstly, the food: the menu is meat-heavy with highlights being the roast pork knuckle, sauerkraut and braised red cabbage. The sausages and schnitzels weren't really memorable. At $40 for one piece cut in half, the Stuyvesant schnitzel was way overpriced; even when factoring in the hollandaise and cheese. Pork ribs had a nice sticky sweet sauce but the meat was a bit dried out. The extensive drinks list seems to be a key attraction - we spotted a 1992 Grange offered by the glass. Our dinner was marred by an arrogant older waiter who delighted in making snide and sarcastic remarks. We initially chalked it up as his standard behaviour but his interactions with other tables made it clear his disdain was reserved for us. Perhaps it was because we didn't order drinks...? Regardless, the attitude we got was unwarranted and made us feel uncomfortable. We found the female server (owner?) and chef much friendlier and welcoming. Was planning to rate this a 2.5 due to the service but it was really only one waiter who was shitty. So Stuyvesant House is a solid 3 but I still would not return nor recommend to anyone.

Max and Rudi have been trading since 1973, and present a polished dining experience with a superb accompaniment of wine—the broadest range of wine in NSW, with prices up to $7000 a bottle (that's not a misprint). Come and enjoy.
