Review Blackwork - Croydon

Vicki Young
We all had a great meal for brunch. Highly recommended. included Cold Soba Noodle Salad, Vegan Nutrition Bowl & mix of sides - roast tomatoes, hash brown, greens and mushrooms.

A great cafe with ample seating both inside and outside. The cafe can get really busy so ensure you book in advance. A decent selection of food to choose from. We choose the eggs benedict and the pulled beef and they were delicious. The portions are quite generous. Staff are attentive and friendly. Plenty of car park available.

Must visit cafe in Croydon! Great food and amazing coffee, highly recommend the bone broth soup and the wagyu steak sandwich! Those two are absolutely sensational šŸ”„

After visiting many cafes across the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne, and not being wowed by any particular dish, and putting up with the same stock standard salmon or beef eggs benedict, I visited for the first time this cafe in Croydon and tried the Pulled Beef Benedict, WOW! Where to begin... the presentation blew me away, and I did wonder where the beef was... But once I cut inside this "creation" it was all there. Incredibly well crafted on every detail, the flavour combinations, creativity, and overall structure left me very, very impressed and satisfied! The freshest beef, and best hollandaise sauce I've ever had, and with the mandarin and beetroot chips, simply divine! I'll be back! :) PS: Great service and nice coffee too.

Cute little spot in Croydon. We ordered Chilli prawn scramble, the Pulled beef benedict & coffee. Great presentation but poor portion size to the price paid comparison to other brunch spots. Staff was great, attentive and welcoming. Plenty of parking space. Overall an OK experience.

Itā€™s a really busy cafe with a generally young crowd but we easily found ourselves absorbed in the vibe The food was great, coffee could have been hotter but was decent enough for a casual brunch
melbfoodieee
it's a very cute cafe which gets quite busy on weekends! i think most dishes on the menu were quite nice but little elements could be improved to make them excellent. our favourite was definitely the chilli scramble!
Nicko Hancock
Charming little cafe with terrific coffee, including Proud Mary filter coffee. We visited Blackwork regularly during lockdown for their tasty takeaway options. Now that we can eat in again, the chili prawn scramble is a highlight.

Blackwork is a little coffee aficionados oasis in Croydon...but they haven't just stopped there they've also provided some of the most quality tea experiences in the eastern-suburbs. The owners are super friendly and make you feel welcome the moment you walk into the space and the food really does need to be tasted to truly understand the nuances of the flavours that are packed in. Specialty Coffee, Specialty Tea, Quality, flavour packed food thats a little of what you know you feel like and a whole lot of what you never even knew existed is the jewel in the crown of Croydon's cafe scene. Full vegan options along with locally sourced products means everyone is catered for (even the kids menu for those adults that can't quite get through a full-sized meal).

This place is the best cafe in Croydon. The food and coffee is always amazing and changes frequently giving you something new and exciting each visit. Best part about this beautiful cafe is the staff who are all friendly and welcoming.

Had to try out blackwork a few weeks ago due to loving their sister cafe, RBCF in Lilydale, and although the food we ordered (pictured is Moroccan lamb and avo on toast) was fairly tasty, the milkshakes we ordered didnā€™t quite live up to my expectations as they were on the gritty side. However, will still be going back to try more of the menu!
Liam Denny
Tom (the owner) refused to serve my sister, who has Aspergers. I was extremely disappointed and offended by the rude comments made about my family and the refusal of service to someone on the spectrum; As it just ableist. He has left my sister distraught and fragile and I would not recommend this cafe to anyone with any morals.

I loved everything about Blackwork, it's the perfect place for locals to catch up, with such great food. the menu provides great options for vegan and boy did they deliver with the flavours. šŸ’ÆšŸ’Æ
I had the Open Morrocan Lamb, Super Bowl and Coconut pancake.
all three dishes were superb, Super Bowl and the coconut pancake were vegan, and tasted amazing! the coconut pancake is a must for all you sweet tooth out there!
PS I've now been here twice within the month!!

A great venue to catch up with friends over coffee. Their menu is also really good and the food presentation is so on point šŸ‘Œ

What I ordered:
Open Moroccan lamb, house smoked salmon benny, coconut pancake (ve)

The open Moroccan lamb dish was super flavourful and the lamb was really tender! Loved that it came with pita bread to scoop up all the sauce.

The smoked salmon Benny was delicious too - the hollandaise was on the lighter side making it less rich and they were very generous with the charred greens.

The coconut pancake is a must try - it was fluffy and had really nice crispy edges. The coconut lychee ice cream was really refreshing too!
Becky
Loved the ambience here and the staff are very friendly. High quality menu and the apple crumble hot cakes are a must order (did I mention it is vegan too!)

On a Saturday this place is super busy, we ordered two lambs but later were told there was one lamb left. Five minutes after we swithed one with roasted barramundi, we were told the last lamb was ordered by customers made order before us so we have to re-order again. We waited a long time for food to get on the table. The roasted barramundi is really lack of flavors. Not pre-marinated or any seasoning for the fish. Not much flavor of vermicelli either. That makes me keep wondering whether the lamb would be a better dish.
On the other hand, we love the friendly and spacious environment. It's busy but not does not feel crowded. That is why we didn't mind waiting for food too much.
Overall, the flavor of dish needs improvement. But still a pleasant place for casual brunch.
Crumbs Of A Foodie
Always a nice place to head to for breakfast and brunch. The coffee is good and the dishes are presented well. The food is fresh and flavoursome. The shakshouka was great with the lamb. The hotcake was lovely and fluffy. It was nice with the extra syrup too.

We thank Blackwork Croydon for our yummy brunch. All of our opinions are genuine and are based on our experience at the time of our visit

Staff very attentive and great food options. Much welcome addition to your area!

Amazing little hidden gem. I dined here for lunch and was really pleased with the service and quality of food. Nothing was a problem. The food really was to die for, the pork baos & salmon were perfect and the apple crumble hotcake was amazing!!! Definitely try!

Welcoming staff with a cute set up cafe. All dishes ordered were delicious and a perfect not too hot or cold hot chocolate. Apple pancakes are a must have !

I booked this place for my mum's birthday the food was good, staff were reasonably friendly but they were just lacking in the normal level of service you'd usually get. I had read that their service was bad in other reviews, I should have listened. When we arrived, they were not organised and did not have our table ready for us. We had to sit in a small square table with the four of us and a toddler in a high chair. They said if a table outside became available, they'd let us know but that never happened. Our food arrived and we all were pretty happy, until I found out my gnocchi was the meat one although I had asked for the mushroom one and I'd already eaten about a quarter of my meal! (I'm a pescatarian and have not eaten meat for a long time!) The waiter apologised but the replacement dish did not arrive until everyone had finished eating. Had to flag down waiter to order desserts and drinks which came promptly but were just plopped onto our small uncleared table with all our lunch dishes. My dad had to then stack the plates and take it to the kitchen himself so we'd have room. Unbelievable... So disappointed I booked this place for my mum's B'day... We stayed in good spirits but I was left with a bad taste in mouth. Even after the huge ordering error and the inconvenience of waiting for my dish, we were still charged for the dish and not offered any compensation.

We came here for brunch and loved the open vibes, the cafƩ has quite a healthy menu with a separate menu option for vegans which I thought was lovely. We ordered the sweet potato gnocchi and the eggs benny on a hash. The hash was so large but crunchy and delicious, the benny was extremely filling. The sweet potato gnocchi was extremely flavoursome- the meat was basically melting in my mouth, highly recommend

Thanks for having us!

We went to this cafe for the first time today and found the food to be fresh and yummy! The menu was different to what we normally go for but it was really good to step out and try something else and the staff are so friendly! We will be there again very soon.
Lina Zheng
Amazing brunch!! I love the food and the service was eclxcellent
Sara Kim
The food and atmosphere was nice, however the service did not make up for the experience, cost or wait time we received. It took 10mins to get the attention of waiters, as they continued to take orders from tables who came after us. Not sure how it took over 30mins to heat up and toast a sandwich and roll, also waiting over 40mins for gnocchi. Not worth it, I don't recommend this place. Rather go elsewhere where customers are actually acknowledged, and if theres a backlog in kitchen maybe communicate that.

Please have some staff that can provide customer service.

Overall food 3.5/5
Cost 4/5
Service 0/5

Great cafe in the heart of Croydon, amazing filter coffee and expansive range of vegan snack and meal options. A venture for all the food lovers! Trendy decor.

Black Word Croydon is a gem in the town. Close to the train station, it was a short walk down one of the main streets - however, hidden away, I was impressed with the beautiful natural lighting and use of indoor and outdoor spaces. The staff were accomodation to me and my guest, and the food was so -delicious- I almost licked the bowl.

The coffee was smooth and creamy, which complimented my delicious salt and zesty meal. Very happy. Would definitely recommend.

10/10 ! One of the best cafes Iā€™ve been to in Melbourne!
First off, service is very friendly here. Everyone greets you with a smile and despite the busy morning, nobody was ignored or unattended to.
Coffee here is strong, and the coffee to milk ration is just right for the soy latte. If you like strong coffee, I recommend the long black.
Food here is as delicious as it looks. The apple pie hotcake was light and fluffy. If you are lactose intolerant like me, the ice cream here taste so good and it is coconut ā€˜ice creamā€™ so you can have it!! The butterscotch sauce definitely made the dish. The hotcake itself wasnā€™t sweet, and the apple topping was sour so the sweet caramel butterscotch sauce actually balanced out the dish very well šŸ˜‹
Do pay this place a visit, it is worth the time and travel :)
P.S.if you have kids, the kids menu here has quite a variety too so take your little ones out too!
We went to Blackwork Croydon at around 10.30 on a Friday. Parking was perfect and easy - parking out the front. The cafe was quite busy inside so we sat outside which was lovely and quiet. This cafe has a great vegan option and although Iā€™m not vegan I tried the vegan granola and the vegan apple pie! The apple pie was so delicious and sweet and was big enough for two people and the granola was yummy and healthy. The service was friendly and quick and I couldnā€™t fault the cafe at all! Would be great to sit outside on a beautiful day there! my friends had the smashed avo and Pork Belly Bao - they both loved their dishes too! If your after Insta quality pics this is the place to come! All plating looked absolutely amazing and like works of art!! Highly recommend!
Great place great food! Canā€™t fault the amazing dishes and everything that we ordered just taste so good! The Apple Pancake is to die for and I also had the Pork Belly Bao too! Well marinated meat and the bun just has the best texture too! Love it! Absolute hidden gem that is so close to me too win win! Would highly recommend!

I had the opportunity to be able to try out this cafe and I can definitely say it didnā€™t disappoint! My favorite dish had to be the apple pancakes. They were so fluffy and light!! The staff was very accommodating and attentive. I would highly recommend!! Thank you for the amazing food and service šŸ˜

I visited Blackwork for breakfast on a Saturday and discovered that the weekend atmosphere was amazing. A lovely buzz without being too loud, there were big windows to let in sunlight and the smells of the busy kitchen were amazing.Ā

Their Instagram says that they have a big variety of vegan options, but I'm often sceptical as I usually have to order something simple like avocado toast, and after a while, that gets a little old. But this menu was teeming with vegan options (it had its own vegan section for both breakfast and lunch). I ordered the most incredible vegan apple crumble pancakes which was so deliciously sweet and looked so good, as I was taking pictures, another table couldn't stop talking about it and asked me what it was called on the menu! They were also really accommodating as I have a nut allergy and held back the candied walnuts, something I find lots of restaurants aren't as happy to do.

My boyfriend, a non-vegan, opted for a chicken burger, which he loved (and I stole some chips) - there's an option on the menu for everyone.Ā

And let's not get started on the coffee...what a treat of a Saturday morning!

A lovely sunny, winter Sunday afternoon spent out atĀ Blackwork Cafe!

It was a little too fresh for us to sit outside so we were placed inside to take in the warm and brightness of the cafe.Ā

Our afternoon started with one latte and one lactose-free cappuccino. Both coffees were placed in front of us before we were even able to read the menu. The Proud Mary coffee beans produced the caffeine buzz and taste we both needed. Neither coffees were burnt or grainy.Ā

After some time perusing their many vegan, vegetarian and regularĀ menu options, we decided on the Lamb Shakshuka and the Truffle Mushroom Benny. (Shakshukas are a frequent breakfast I try to cook on the weekend, so I was curious to see how well mine compared to Blackwork Cafe's haha).

The Lamb Shakshuka (GFO):

Served in a mini wok, the Shakshuka was served steaming hot. While waiting for it to cool down, I took advantage of dipping the toasted Turkish bread into the baked egg - golden egg yolk oozed everywhere!! The braised lamb ribs were cooked to perfection, literally fell off the bone.Ā The base of the Shakhsuka was spicy (not too spicy) but also a sweet topped with sprinkled Danish Feta. It is clearly a better Shakshuka than I could ever produce.Ā

The Truffle Mushroom Benny (V, GF):

Served on a bed on potato hash, this vegetarian twist on the traditional eggs BenedictĀ did not disappoint. If you love mushrooms, then this dish is for you! With king oyster, enoki, shihefi and shiitake mushrooms and truffle hollandaise oozing over the perfectly poached eggs; it was heaven on earth. The sprinkling of pecorino grates helped take this dish to an other level. It is great to find a cafe embrace the plant based movement especially with this Eggs Benedict.Ā

Both dishes were hearty and just what was needed on this winter afternoon.Ā
It should be noted that their menu offers more vegan & vegetarian dishes than regular!Ā

Make sure you check out Blackwork CafeĀ as soon as you can - you won't be disappointed!

Absolutely delicious food this Sunday! Catering to all - vegans and non-vegans alike!

Buckwheat Granola was the perfect not-so-Sweet sweet dish. Hit the spot without the sugar high!

The Sweet Potato gnocchi was rich and full of flavour and the side of miso greens went perfectly.

Charcoal Chai had a an awesome twist to it and had my little boy feeling all sorts of happy (as did the box of toys that was on offer)!

Friendly staff and a perfect place to brunch with family and friends.

See you soon Blackwork - weā€™ll be back!
Jodilly Pendre
This cafe is awesome. You should try their Eggs Benny because theyā€™re the only one who takes it into a whole new different level. Every dish was on point - presentation, taste, serving. Service is outstanding! xx

A beautiful bright cafe with lots of delicious food options!

We were spoilt to 3 dishes when we dined here!
1. PINA COLADA WAFFLES: prettiest masterpiece I ever did see! Fluffy of the inside complimented by a crunch from the apple, creaminess from the ice cream = amaze

2. PORK BELLY BAO BUNS: Soft pillowy buns with a tasteful of centre of pork! Absolutely mouth watering and and a must order is Bao buns are your thing!

3. BUTTERMILK CHICKEN BURGER: With apple & fennel slaw, pickled jalapeno, chips aioli (gfo) Bite into this šŸ” and warning, there is a mighty šŸŒ¶ļø kick to spice up your Friday! šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„. Crispy fried chicken and oozing cheesy goodness!

The coffee was beautiful, beans my Proud Mary!

Definitely worth checking out if youā€™re in the area!

It was a little drive out, and I thought why am I driving all this way for a cafe!? Then i got there, and got tucked into their fabulous menu! We had the absolutely delicious potato hash with cauliflower and a truffle mushroom. This was absolutely delicious, not a fan of eggs believe it or not but otherwise I really enjoyed the dish! Would recommend. Now, the Pina Colada Waffles. Iā€™ve eaten a lot of waffles in my food adventures, these would sit up in my top three Iā€™ve ever had in Melbourne. I canā€™t describe how good these are. The caramelised pineapple, delicious and goes to well with waffle. Then the rum and coconut ice cream, that was sooo good to complete with the sweet pineapple! The buttermilk chicken burger was devoured by my partner but he loved it, happy boy!

Absolutely loved my experience at Blackwork!Ā

The place is beautiful, bright and light, the team was super friendly too! Coffee was great.Ā

I was really impressed with the extensive plant-based menu. I had to choose the VEGAN CRUMPETS and I was so happy with them! They were presented so nicely with blackberry compote and matcha mousse. Loved the flavours!

Will definitely have to come back to try the TOFU SCRAMBLE, or maybe the JACKFRUIT QUESADILLAS!!
Sana @ MissBurberryXO
Located a short walk from the Croydon train stop, Blackwork Croydon is tucked away around the main street of the area.Ā

I brought my sister in to try the Blackwork's lunch menu, which has a variety of creative choices and even a separate vegan menu.

Food: Since the restaurant was mostly empty at around 3 pm, the service was really quick. The coffee was very well made, silky and delicious. The juice served was good, although not house-made.

Our favorite dish was Mr. Marty's Crumpets - with matcha mousse based in coconut yogurt, and the best pistachio praline in I've had! The compote was fairly tart, which balances the crumpets itself.Ā

The Shakshuka was also really well done, with ample mushrooms which we added, Persian fetta, and the option to have the original Shakshuka with braised lamb. The tomato-based sauce is super delicious and the portion size is medium.

Finally, we tried the Lentil and Pumpkin burger which is served with tomato relish, avocado, and lots of fries on the side. Although slightly sloppy, the burger is slightly on the sweet side (even without the tomato relish), which is wonderful if you like a sweeter vegan burger! And the fries dipped in some aioli are perfect!Ā

Space: Bright, spacious, good to socialize, and there is also a little nook with lots of magazines to read while you sip your coffee! Something I really appreciate!Ā

Delicious food and atmosphere!I had the Calamari salad and roast pumpkin. Both dishes were amazing.Ā
The calamari was lightly fried which was nice and light. The roast pumpkin dish was also quite refreshing!
The venue itself is quite nice and spacious. We had our dog with us in which the venue had outdoor seating's. Pet friendly indeed.

Staff were attentive and made sure we were comfortable :)Will definitely return to this gem of a place.

Have been here twice now and unfortunately haven't been over impressed either time. Service is very slow and if sitting outside, there waiters/waitresses take a long time to come out to you. The smashed avo dish u had was quite bland. The avo, quinoa and feta on one plate were all lacking in flavours.

The second time, I got a muffin with my coffee and the muffins was really dry. Coffee is amazing though ā˜•

I was really surprised by this hidden gem in croydon! Delicious food and great service! The pina colada waffles were an absolute hit! The baked eggs were soooo good also!

Visited Blackwork a week ago for a brunch and hereā€™s some thoughts about the cafe! I ordered shakshuka, buttermilk chicken burger and dr Martyā€™s crumpets as a dessert. Everything was really good as I expected. The place was so comfy and the service was amazing. The staff made us feel very welcomešŸ’– absolutely recommend this cafe! Thanks for having mešŸ˜Š

Nice spot for a coffee and if youā€™re here in the morning, the sunshine can be just gorgeous. Met for a coffee and was quite smitten by the pottery cups - lovely.
Order was taken quickly and the coffee was good. Couldā€™ve been hotter though. Next time Iā€™ll have something to eat. Staff are young but good at their job. decor is nice and the place is large so good for groups.
Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Good parking. Right opposite the cinemas so nice spot for a pre or post movie bite to eat.

Real rating 4.3 āļø

We had visited Blackwork not long ago for brunch and hereā€™s what we thought of it!

Breakfast bao - served with hoisin pork belly, chill scrambled egg and pickled vegetables! The pork belly was soft, tender and juicy which melted in the mouth! It went well with the scrambled egg and pickled vegetable though I felt there was a missing ingredient - perhaps a mini slaw would have made it perfect.

Pina colada waffles - served with caramelized pineapple, coconut rum ice cream, mint and lime salsa! What made this an interesting dish was the fact it was a sweet and savory combination! The sweetness of the waffles and coconut ice cream with the sourness of the pineapple and tanginess of the mint and lime salsa! I actually enjoyed the flavors as they all complemented each other!

Dr Martyā€™s crumpets - served with blackberry compote, matcha mousse and pistachio praline! What made this my fave for the day was not only because I was a matcha lover but the fact that the crumpets were thick and fluffy! The sweetness of the crumpets and matcha mousse matched the sourness of the blackberry compote! Each bite got me wanting to go back for more!

Blackwork has yummy dishes to offer and we would go back again to try the rest of their menu!

Stopped by Blackwork on our way to the Dandenong Ranges.
Loved the industrial look!!!
Food was solid, especially the beer battered chips!
We tried:
- Chai Latte
- Latte
- Buttermilk Burger
Would visit again if we we're in the area! šŸ˜Š
Really lovely atmosphere, staff were friendly and welcoming as soon as I came in! Minimalistic aesthetic was great for photos, and the food not only looks fantastic, tastes great as well. Had the avocado on toast as my main, generic dish but they were able to add a unique twist with the pumpkin crisps on top and sumac yogurt - flavours that tasted delicious together. My favourite had to be the blue latte, the flavour took me by surprise, reminded me of a chai latte but a little more delicate on the pallet, Iā€™ll definitely be coming back for more. Thank you for the wonderful experience!

We were invited into Blackwork today, a large bright cafe just a block away from Main Street Croydon. We started with a skinny latte and strong almond latte, the lovely hot and creamy coffees warmed us until the meals arrived.

We tried to go largely vegetarian today although I couldnā€™t say no to a side of bacon. We ordered the The cauliflower and potato hash, Dr Martyā€™s crumpets and a Granola cereal with almond milk.

The cauliflower and potato hash was a well presented but somewhat unique dish. The hash arrived on top of finely chopped truffled mushrooms, whipped Brie, soft boiled egg and a side of bacon. Taste wise I enjoyed the combination of flavours but was challenged by the texture of the hash, I think it was the ratio of cauliflower to potato that made it so moist.

The Granola was a stunning dish which had so many crunch elements. It was also served with the poached pear and orange which where delicate and simply delicious, and the coconut yoghurt-brings it all together. A central jug of almond milk was perfect for KD and myself as we both like different levels of milk.

Iā€™ve been wanting to try Dr Martyā€™s crumpets for a long time, they arrived with blackberry compote, matcha mousse and pistachio praline. The crumpets were lovely and fluffy and the toppings a great range of textures and flavours, not too sweet. We were a little disappointed that what we were presented wasnā€™t the same as we saw on Instagram because the generosity of compote in the photo was exactly what this dish needed to prevent that top crumpet from being overly dry. We still enjoyed this dish.

There were several tables of large groups in today which would have no doubt put the kitchen under pressure, so some elements werenā€™t possibly as perfect as they usually are.

Had a wonderful experience here! Was first greeted by lovely staff members and was looked after with warm and friendly service. The interior is stunning and fresh, very inviting and feels like you could sit in there for hours without a problem!

I was SO impressed with the coffee, latte art on a soy coffee is always a bonus and I appreciate the skill so much. The taste of the coffee was beautiful with a perfect temperature! My mum had a flat white and enjoyed it very much.

I ordered the smashed avocado, it had a great balance of flavours and the pumpkin crisps added a great texture! My mum has the cauliflower hash with salmon and said it was the best meal sheā€™s ever had!

And to top it off we tried the Brunswick Breakfast tea which really hit the spot ā¤ļø

Would definitely come back here again and again!!!

If you need to find a brunch place, blackwork got you!! Honestly the best fritters Iā€™ve had šŸ„° so so delicious!! The waffles and crumpets were just as amazing too šŸ’ž was a bit of drive from where I am from but 100% worth it! Also donā€™t forget to try their blue latte šŸ’™šŸ’™
Daisy Never Too Sweet
Sunday brunch today was at Blackwork in Croydon. I went to high school near the area, but havenā€™t visited for a long time and didnā€™t realise it had changed so much. There definitely was no Blackwork cafe last time I was there šŸ˜Š I trendy and modern cafe with a good variety of gluten free, vegan and asian inspired dishes. Coffee was on point (didnā€™t see which roaster they used. Boyfriend ordered the smash avocado with feta, poached eggs and crispy sweet potato chips. While I had the most delicious cauliflower and potato hash with truffles mushroom, whipped Brie, soft boiled eggs and of course bacon.
To wrap things up, we shared some Dr Marty crumpets with blackberry compote, matcha mousse and pistachio praline. Would have loved a little more matcha flavour but overall a good dessert.
Didn't think there would be a decent cafe in Croydon tbh! I loved what the menu had to offer, some fantastic options. I chose the fruit salad with seed&nut bar and the shakshuka with sourdough. Both were delicious, wish the portions were a bit more generous tho. Service wasn't overly warm but acceptable.

Croydon is not a suburb I would usually associate with great cafes, but Blackwork has definitely changed my view on that. Firstly, I was surprised with how big the cafe is, and it was certainly packed on the Sunday afternoon that I visited. That could only mean good things. It has a lovely, airy ambience and the staff are attentive, warm and welcoming. Fitted out in light colours and woods, it's a cozy space for such a large venue.

Service was speedy and our meals arrived quite quickly. I was sad that I missed out on the waffles as they were sold out, but I was more than happy with the crumpet dish I picked in it's place. Delicious crumpets topped with an amazing blueberry compote and a divine matcha mousse, the praline pieces added a nice crunchy texture and sweetness to a dish that was subtle in it's sweetness. It was also visually stunning and made me want to dive straight in.

We also chose the baked eggs with slow cooked lamb. This was sublime, with a zesty tomato based sauce, tender and tasty lamb and perfectly set egg. The crunchy toast on the side was perfect for dipping, and is certainly the perfect comfort dish now that the weather is cooling down. I loved the little individual pans so much that I proceeded to order some online so that I can use them at home.

With awesome coffee, and such awesome food, decor and service , I know it won't be long before I go back...especially for those waffles!!
Good Food Good Mood
We were invited to Blackwork today and I have to say I am thrilled to bits that such an impressive establishment is only a 15 minute drive away. I thoroughly enjoyed all the food today and the modern minimalist decor of the cafe was lovely to see for a local.

I had the braised lamb shakshuka with feta and a poached egg served with the most heavenly sourdough. There was a hash brown added to the dish it it was sufficient in its own right. The potato hash lacked seasoning but very yummy when dipped into the shakshuka sauce. Absolutely spot on flavour wise and the lamb was lovely and tender.

The second dish was the pina colada waffles. This was very well executed. Great textures from the three different types of pineapple and I loved the coconut rum ice cream. The ratios were perfect. The two waffles were sandwiched with two pieces of caramelised pineapple and the waffles themselves were delicious. An overall very tropical dish completely nailing the pina colada concept. Iā€™ll certainly be recommending this place

Your food gave myself and my partner food poisoning.
We ordered the cauliflower and hash w/ salmon, and the pina colada waffles.
It looked so beautiful its a shame it didn't taste that way..
Salmon was not cooked, cheese sauce tasted foul.Ā
Waffles were stale and coconut ice cream tasted off.

Milk in coffee wasĀ curdled.

The setting is very minimalistic and modern and the staff are fantastic (friendly, accommodating and professional). The menu ticks all the right boxes in terms of creativity, flavour and dietary options. Definitely worth visiting if you're ever in the leafy outer eastern suburbs!!

What a lovely cafe! They have indoor and outdoor seatings. They are family friendly and it was beautifully decorated too.

We had a Cappuccino and the Charcoal Chai to start off with. The coffee was AMAZING. It literally woke me up - it was just what I needed!

We then ordered the Breakfast Bao which was crispy, nicely seasoned and the bao itself was so super soft! The bircher was nice and refreshing. The coconut yogurt mixed really well with the mango and the passionfruit. We also had the Pina Colada waffles! We loved the pineapple pieces on it and it was plated so beautifully plated!

We also went on a Saturday and they had the farmers market on at the park next door. Definitely should have a wonder around after visiting this cafe. Highly recommend!

I went here last week for brunch and I loved the food (especially the calamari). The filter-coffee was also amazing! Must try the vegan jam doughnut :) It was a nice open-kitchen cafe with a nice outdoor terrace.
Dine And Dash
Blackwork is an incredible cafƩ located in Croydon serving up premium coffee, and fantastic food. The venue is simply stunning! The massive establishment appears to have renovated a large shed which gives the place an industrial look, while having plenty of seating inside and out.

We ordered the Breakfast Bao with hoisin pork belly, chilli scrambled egg and pickled vegetables. We also had the Buttermilk Chicken Burger which came with apple and fennel slaw, pickled jalapeƱo, chips and aioli. For drinks we had two coffees and a mango juice.Ā

The Pork Belly Bao was definitely our favourite dish! The pork was cooked to perfection and the bao was soft and fluffy. The dish tasted beautiful and the scrambled eggs were a great accompaniment to the dish. The Chicken burger was also sensational. The chicken was crunchy and cooked well and the chips were hot and went great with the aioli. Both coffees were great and the mango smoothie was nice and refreshing.Ā

The staff were extremely friendly and catered to all our needs and we were so pleased to have been invited here today. We can definitely see why this place is so popular in the neighbourhood!

Such a beautiful cafe tucked away in Croydon. Its like a huge shed Thats been made into a cafe. Simply styled. Staff here are lovely and offered great service. It was a simply menu but had some great dishes to choose from. A great coffee and breakfast dishes were well worth the drive.

We both chose sandwiches out of the glass cabinet. I went with theĀ 'Tofu schnitzel, spinach, onion, tomato, vegan aioli and relish ($12.00)'. This substantial dish was a delightful vegan version of a chicken schnitzel sandwich.

Good food, nice venue, and reasonably priced. I had the bircher and it was delicious. Staff were friendly and pretty attentive. Can't quite put my finger on why I wouldn't give this place 5 stars, but would definitely come back again.

Great food and nice coffee. The tofu scrambles is really good and the mochas are on point. The place is sleek and has an outdoor area too. Will come back when in the area. Overall a great spot.

Today my sister turns 31. I came here with my dad and my sister to celebrate her birthday. Being the first day of summer and being such lovely weather I couldnā€™t stop thinking about taking my kayak out with my mates Travis and John. We try to go to the Yarra river when we can and sometimes we go to the beach. Coffee 8/10
DamoForce Food
Huge venue. Nice coffee although they got our coffee order wrong and then fixed it with someone else. Eggs poached well, though half of the added brisket was full of fat and unedible. The staff avoided our table like it was the plague due to they could see that on both our plates. We mentioned it to them upon paying and they just timidly passed it off with a sorry hope it won't happen on your next visit.

Guys from Round Bird Canā€™t Fly in Lilydale have taken on Croydon. It works; particularly the food. Must try Lauraā€™s eggs anyway. Bread is wonderful as is the many vegan options.

Manager friendly but told me to see the barrista for coffee order, then after queuing up for 5 minutes again, he ended up serving me anyway because she was run off her feet and could not take the order - WTF.Ā He should have just taken the order up front.Ā This exposed the shambolic ordering system with no priority for existing orders over new customers. Ā Somehow I also saw one customer leave with three take away coffees before me even though I had ordered 10 minutes earlier than she did and was still waiting for mine - another WTF.Ā Another 3 customers also got served by the single FOH staff member while my order for coffee just sat on the bench because she couldn't do both and decided to serve the new customers rather than clear existing orders; this was because the manager was MIA and there was nobody on the till taking orders.Ā Yeesh.Ā FOH staff also handling both food, coffee and money with no glove changes - that's just not on and yes, another WTF.Ā Other issues: coffee very expensive - try $5.50 for a take away decaf flat white; this is Croydon mate, not Fitzroy and hoping for the best, unfortunately it turned out to have bitter notes and was nor at all inviting.Ā The renovation of the old "Georges" also appears half done with dirty windows, old disgusting ceiling airconditioner still there, same grungy floor and a very stuffy atmosphere with no ventilation.Ā I nearly left and abandoned ship but the coffee finally arrived almost 15 minutes after I ordered it.Ā Ā Love the Croydon coffee and cafe scene, but there are much better options very close by and I definitely won't be going back to this one.

Booked for breakfast during the week but when we arrived Saturday morning there was no booking. Staff really need to be trained better to take a phone booking I was asked to hold 4 times and still no booking made. We were given a table which was good. The food and coffee are good. The staff also need more training in service and checking if you want another coffee as we weren't asked we didn't order extra and went somewhere else for another coffee.

Popped in for a quick arvo coffee and cake and was highly impressed. Anyone coming here, do yourself a favour and get the Portuguese tart.... absolutely divine!! Great flavour on the coffee side of things too. Thanks guys.

Good space, environment and parking right outside of the cafe. Food was good and oh coffee is from Proud Mary. Any coffee addict would know who Proud Mary is :)

Croydonā€™s cafes are getting competitive now there are so many of them doing so well :)

The staff are absolutely lovely (theyā€™re even lovely to our dog) and the food is above and beyond your standard cafe fare - itā€™s a modern menu that is executed very well. I know this is a glowing review but in my opinion theyā€™re one of the best cafes in the East!
The Critical Barista
With the addition of Blackwork, Croydon has officially entered the modern era of the Melbourne cafe scene, hooray! Sunday lunch was pumping; the high standard of food and service is reflected in the massive customer base this new cafe seems to already have established. I opted for the brown rice nutrition bowl with salmon- normally I wouldnā€™t order such a healthy dish but hey, when in Rome. The veg was all pickled and bursting with flavour, the salmon was cooked to perfection and the dressing balanced out the zing factor well. I gobbled this bowl down in five minutes flat and am already looking forward to trying the other option. My iced latte was yummy; no bitter notes and unless my tastes buds are fooling me, they use good old bonsoy too!

Is it pricey? Yes. Did I feel cheated for what I had to pay? No! šŸ‘šŸ‘ Thankyou for a delicious lunch and I will see you again SOON!

I recently visited Blackwork for the second time, and was really looking forward to ordering the pork belly / potato hash breakfast I had the first time I went. I told quite a few people about how good it was! Unfortunately though they have changed the menu and itā€™s no longer available :( I was a little surprised as I understand they havenā€™t been open long and the menu has already changed, but maybe theyā€™re trying new things? Admittedly I didnā€™t ask. Instead I tried the black pudding breakfast, which is accompanied by a chorizo and apple chutney, hollandaise, hash brown, and egg; though to be honest I was a little letdown. The black pudding tasted quite dry, grainy and flavourless to me, while the chutney had a strong vinegar flavour which I thought overpowered everything else. The coffee however is good, and the pork belly dish I had last time was amazing. The pork belly was perfectly cooked with a thick flavourful sauce, along with two salty / fluffy potato hash mounds, and creamy hollandaise. I really wish it didnā€™t go! I want to say also I think they maybe bought their high chairs flat-packed and whoever put them together put the seats the wrong side up as the straps are meant to face downward, rather than having the child sit on top of them.
Plant Based Mum
New kid on the block in Croydon. Fantastic plant based options on offer, and plenty of good picks for the little ones too! Well worth a visit!!
Vege Eats
New cafe by the makers of round bird canā€™t fly in Lilydale where I LOVE the food! So was really keen to try here out! Had smashed avo with a side of fritters. Enjoyed the smashed avo, was a bigger serving that I realised at first. Fritters were ok though they were more just battered bit cauliflower (like poppers) than Iā€™d call fritters? As with round bird, love how many vegan and vegetarian options are available. Really want to come try the jackfruit!
