Review Balkh Takeaway - Dandenong

This place is next level in every way, 1/2 chicken salad and bread and dip with a drink.... $13. Guys are super friendly and the dining room is spotless, you really can't do better in Dandenong. Ample parking for large vehicles aswell.

This place is so good we travelled from the Gold Coast to eat here. They chicken and lamb is cooked to perfection, the rice and salad is amazingly good.

If you need to taste some authentic afgan kebab, visit this place. Juicy charcoal chicken and charcoal kebab.

It was okay. Ordered 4 skewer platter and a kebab. The chicken and lamb were cooked really nice and moist - the highlight. A fair bit of turmeric in the chicken marinade. Afghan bread was okay but had better. The salad was pretty basic and the lettuce was slightly old. Service was efficient and prompt. Price is thereabouts given the area.

We were introduced to this restuarant years ago and have not gone to any other since. The meat skewers are deliciously flavoured well and juicy. Love the Afghan bread, so fresh and soft, beautiful with the meat juices. The service is so welcoming, thank you.

Delightful friendly courteous service and delicious Afghan food.

Absolutely loved the food here. We've ordered mixed kebab platter with Rice. Rice cooked at its best with light flavours. Kebabs are equally tasty. Would love to visit this place again.

Very surprised at people giving 4 and 5 rating. Well, I followed the best rating thing and went for a dinner. Cleanliness 1 star not even close, talking about tables and service and that's give you an idea abt behind scene preparation Food taste 2 stars and that because of bread and shami kbab the rest not good Price very expensive compared to food quality and service.

Delicious charcoaled meats.
Generous servings and modest pricing.
Warm family vibes and good service to cap it all off.

Friendly service. Food takes a little longer to serve as it's cooked over charcoal.

My lamb was a bit over cooked.

Overall an ok meal for the price.

I came here today for a meal. Couldn't believe how incredible the food was! It was very clean and healthy! Food tasted amazing 👌
And Wow for $13 the portion was huge! You could even share the meal between 2 if you wanted to!
I pretty much demolished the whole thing but after 20-30mins I already feel digested and not stuffed!
Will definitely come back many times 😬😬

I went and ordered x2 charcoal chickens for my parents. when it it was payment I realised I had forgotten my wallet and had no money, the kind gentleman told me to pay them whenever I can. I was shocked as I just a stranger to their shop yet they trusted me without knowing me which was huge deal for me, otherwise I would’ve had to drive back home 30 mins with no food. So over tall customer service is out of this world.

Tasty kebab wrap for $3.50 - what more could you want?
Pretty sure Balkh and Sahar Takeaway have the same menus and same owners so you're safe going to either.

We had a work lunch here and because my colleague was Afghan we knew we were in for a treat. The food here is very delicious and generous , the bread they give you is out of this world ! So fluffy and crunchy on the exterior. The meats are also cooked nicely, the lamb mince skewer was my favourite , I also liked the lamb and chicken skewers . Great little find in Dandenong

One of the best Afghan kebab shops in Melbourne.

The food is prepared fresh, cooked perfectly and full of flavour. Huge portions and very very well priced. Customer service is good too.

Do yourself a favour and give this place a try.

Best afgani food in Melbourne. When ever I visit the beach down the south east coast we always make time for a detour to dandy specifically for this place. The stuff is always really friendly, the food is really good and it's also really cheap.

Had takeaway here for a work team event, ordered some bread which tasted delicious you could tell it was fresh, shredded chicken, some rice dishes and salad was also a hit for many others. I must say the chicken was cooked to perfection and so crispy and tasteful.

Best in Dandenong, Best in Melbourne’s south east and it’s not a stretch to even go as far as saying, Best in Aus. Top pick ✅ always fresh !
My favourite place in Dandenong! The chicken and lamb skewers are so good! I always get the yoghurt sauce to go with it. A must try for tasty afghan food

Awesome , just awesome. Hands down best Kebabs in Dandenong. Keep in mind they are not your average Doner , Chicken kebab stereotype. But the afghan one.

Taste , customer service , value for money = 5/5

An institution! Really great as far as takeaway goes, a bit annoying that it’s cash only but worth the trip to the ATM. Definitely value for $ and satisfyingly filling!

THE MOST SENSATIONAL KEBAB YOU WILL EVER EAT! Balkh is up my sleeve of regular go to's and has been a consistent favourite for seven years now. The quality never wavers and is always exceptional. My favourite is the chicken kebab. It is so incredibly soft and tender, and unlike any kebab that I have had before. The rice is perfectly cooked always and is a must have, along with the complimentary Afghan bread. Salad could do with improvement but meh, not there for the salad. Reasonably priced. Decor is nothing to rave about, but once again, meh, not there for the decor. Love the chilli sauce also, I easily smash three of those servings per visit; don't be afraid to ask for more!
I < 3 Balkh Takeaway; see you again soon my tasty friend.
PS you can actually eat here, the name implies takeaway only but this is not the case.

Our first time here; we ordered the charcoal grilled lamb kebabs. They were delicious; the meat cooked very nicely and the bread is so good. The staff are friendly, the place clean and bright. A great place for a quick bite and great value for money.

Oh, for those not used to spicy food, don't add the red chili pepper (on the tables) as you may find it very spicy. If you do, however, the yoghurt drink goes well with the food.

Amazing kebabs, big portions, cook to orders, highly recommend , try at least once before you say it's not your thing :)

I had Meal NO 2 Shami and Meal NO 4 Mix Kebab and a large bottle of homemade yoghurt.

Delicious, authentic and value for money. We ordered a mixed plate about $16 and a kebab for $8 and should have got the plate to share as was lots of food. Cooked fresh and friendly staff

Best kebabs, been a loyal customer for over 8 years, meat is always perfect. The owner is a really nice guy, fed me for free a few times as I didn't have any cash on me, and they don't take cards.

Yuuuuuuuuum. Char grilled kebabs + freshly baked bread + delicious afghan style rice (I love the pickled carrot!) = deliciousness. Sure, the decor isn't anything to crow about and you need to be mindful of the unspoken seating system (I pulled a major noob move of sitting down before ordering, do not do that!), but this is top notch food at a great price
Big Belly Full
I got the mix kebab with rice meal which consisted of 4 skewers (1 lamb, 1 mince lamb and 2 chicken). Bread was complimentary as most kebab places around Dandenong. All the meat were tasty but the lamb mince skewer was a tad too salty. The portion size of the meal was very generous and very cheap. I came here to share the food with my sister. The waiter took initiative and brought us two sets of sauce, plates and cutlery which I thought was thoughtful as I had forgot to ask for it. The staff are polite and to the point. The restaurant is simple and seems quite popular with the locals. Salt and paprika are provided on each table. If you're around the area or looking for a feed after going to the Dandy markets head down here and you won't regret it. Order your food with a yogurt drink, it's good!

Always loved this place, meat is delicious and fresh, very well priced and staff are friendly. They seem to have lately changed the amazing bread though to some whole meal cardboard crap. Could have been a one off, but otherwise great place!

My goto place to eat in dandenong. I have been back many times and never had a bad experience. The lamb kebab is the staple I always have and every time it has been delicious. The meat soft and never dry. The establishment is very low key with a large amount of business via take away.

Most famous afghan kebabs amongst the younger generation. I have been eating here for 10 years now and they are just as good. While there is competition around the area that is providing similar food now. I won't go past the authentic kebabs here. Been to Turkey and all around the world. And these kebabs are better than anywhere else I have seen.
The Whippeteers
We've been coming for years and have introduced many people to this lovely restaurant. Some have also come back again and introduced others who keep coming back. It's that good.

The bread, the char grilled meats, and sauces are very very tasty and consistently of excellent quality.

Just yesterday we grabbed a chicken roll and a chicken rice takeaway pack. It sure hit the spot. But we usually eat in.

So, do yourself a favour: eat inside. Have it as fresh as possible off the coals. You'll be glad you did.

Been coming here since my uni days. Despite moving out from Melb I still make sure I visit this joint everytime I am back in town. Reasonable prices. Damn good kebabs. Amazing bread I always take away. Never had a bad meal in 8 yrs. Only problem is I cant eat everything on the plate..not bad for $15 meals.

We frequent Melbourne for the great food joints and shopping or at least my wife does (for the latter).

Having spent time in the Middle East (and with my wife being born in Dubai) we often have a severe hankering for authentic Middle Eastern food and I'm not talking about the stuff that's sold in food courts.

My brother-in-law took me on a 35 minute drive out from central Melbourne to a suburb called Dandenong to Balkh, a restaurant run by Afghans.

While the restaurant from the road may not be incredibly enticing as it lacks ambience and store front appeal, the food more than makes up for it by serving up spiced meats that's grilled over charcoal. These kebabs are best eaten with their signature Afghani naan.

Just to reiterate, Balkh is in no way a 5 star eatery, it's a very simple restaurant with a very simple menu but their food is fresh, tasty and the portions, generous.

Rating out of 5 (5 being the highest):
Food – 4
Ambience – 2
Presentation – 2
Service – 4
Environment – 2

This place maybe well out of the way to get to but I assure you, that you will not be disappointed.

Best Tikka in Dandenong. Balkh is my favorite restaurant when it comes to Tikka Kebab. The portions are big enough for 2 people and they give you plenty of complimentary salad and Afghan bread. Friendly staff and great service.

Baulk at these pre-fab kebabs. I ate a crappy pre-made Afghan chicken kebab from Sahar next door the other day. I didn’t enjoy it a bit. So after a hospital shift, I rode down to Balkh. I reckoned it had to be better. It wasn’t. I should have changed my mind when I came in and saw a pile of wrapped-and-ready kebabs under the heat lamp. The dried-out Afghan bread fold-over encased more heat-wilted iceberg lettuce. Balkh’s diced chicken has more pepper heat to it than Sahar’s, and they’re more generous with the meat at Balkh. But it’s still worse than a Subway sanger, IMHO. At least it’s cheap -- I think the docket was $6.50.

It didn’t hit me until later -- there was no rotating slab of chicken. But Balkh (and Sahar) have a lot of charcoal chickens on sale in the front. Today’s kebab is made from yesterday’s charcoal chicken! Aside from the revolting lettuce, it means that by the time you eat one of these kebabs, the dead chicken flesh has been sitting in heat for probably 20 hours over two days. Not my idea of a good meal. But I’m not a gastro bacterium, eh?

THE ABSOLUTE BEST CHICKEN SKEWERS EVERRRR !!!

Good food!. Generous servings, good price.
Authentic flavour. The meats were cooked well with the wonderful flavour of char grilling and the right amount of spices that was fantastic. The sauce and bread were awesome.
Highly recommend you try it.
Will be back!
