I never tried African food before so wasn't sure what to expect. But wow the flavors are so intense and vibrant. Love the smell of spices and the hit of spice is sweet worthy. Food was well presented along with great service

Good injera and very delish spiced kitfo. Try it raw. The vegetarian option was good too, well cooked lentils with its clear flavours. The ambience was not so well presented. However, service was very friendly and warm. Good place to try if you’re in the area.
Came here with a groupon. Ethiopian cuisine with homely interior. A quiet ngut and staff arent as accomodating except for one waiter that occasionally came out. Enjera is well made and thr dishes are decent, though the meats were tough and dry.
One of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne. I have been here many times and will continue to do so. The food is amazing and very reasonable and the staff always remember us and treat us well. A real home-style place where I feel like a friend as well as a customer.
Came to Gibe today with a Groupon. Absolutely loved the food! Service was average but acceptable. We had Derek tibs, tibs & doro wat plus veg bayenatu. Food was amazing.
The food is very simple and tasty. We had ordered the three course vegetarian platter. They bring the quantity of food as needed, so least wastage. Wish the menu included some desserts too. Will go again for sure.
Fairly basic looking inside,more a cafe than a restaurant. The injera bread was great for mopping up the food. The beef stew was lovely and tender, the pan fried beef, although flavoursome was a bit tough. Veg dishes were all lightly spiced and tasting of ginger & garlic.
Gibe is a sweet, little family-run restaurant in Dandenong which serves up delicious Ethiopian food. I went with my partner in June and I'm still thinking about our meal to this day! We opted for the banquet and the food didn't stop coming. As we both love spicy food, our favourite dish consisted of minced beef and a lot of chili. I can't remember the name anymore - but I'd recommend requesting it! The injera was lovely and not too sour, and each and every dish we ate was flavoursome. There was a steady meat to vegetarian dish ratio, and the drink choices were great too. Would highly recommend to anyone and everyone!
We had ordered two combination platters - one meat, one vegetarian. Apart from the obviously meat plate, I'm not entirely sure what's on the rest of the plates except to say everything was delicious! While everything was tasty, we all agreed that the vegetarian dishes tasted the best. There was just something about the spices that really blend well with the starchiness of the various lentils and vegetables that were used.
I tried this hidden gem after reading reviews here. Delicious food. The injera bread is amazing. The meat dishes are full of flavours and so yummy, they are great to share with friends. The food price is also reasonable.

This was the first time we had tried Ethiopian cuisine and I was looking for a new culinary experience. We started off with the sambussa which are small pastries filled with meat and herbs. They were divine and we could have eaten lots of them but wanted to save room for mains! They were so light and fragrant and came with a spicy sauce.
For main I ordered the Yetsome Beyayinetu (vegetarian option) which consisted of a variety of small servings such as lentil curries, cabbage and carrots, potatoes & beans, spicy greens & a small spicy salad. We also had the bozona shiro which was a delicious beef stew. Everything was quite spicy but not too hot although there are some really spicy options available on the menu.
The injera was served with these mains and is a type of sour flat bread with air bubbles made with teff flour. They look like a chamois and make a fascinating accompaniment to the exotic flavors of the meal.
There appeared to be no dessert available but we were satisfied but it is very light food so didn't feel weighed down which can happen after some meals! I'd like to go back one day & try some of the other dishes on the menu (and have more sambussa!)
Not much to look at from the outside but step inside and what a meal. Unbelievable flavours and the staff were super friendly. Someone else had written this was a hidden gem. They were spot on.

This was our first time to try African food and we were completely enthralled by the taste at this lovely restaurant.
The service is just exceptional. We were seated and given enough time to settle down. The staff made sure that there was water on the table. When they saw that we were ready to order, the staff came over to take the order
They also made sure that we ordered as per our tastes.
They explained to us what ingredients go into which dish and also recommended us to try their popular ones.
They didn't hassle us by coming to our table every five minutes either asking if we need anything else.
We will definitely go back and try their other yummy dishes.

Amazing gem in Dandenong! Beautiful Ethiopian food with plenty of fresh, home cooked, delicious and authentic flavours. Family owed business with reasonable prices and generous serves. Now one of my favourite go to spots in Dandenong! A must try!
Gibe African is located in a fairly quiet area in Dandenong. Theres plenty of street parking available around the corner on Thomas Street.
The restaurant was quiet when we arrived but it picked up after a while. The waiter would walk around quite regularly, but we found it a bit difficult to get his attention.
The service could do with a bit of work, but the meals were nice and arrived in reasonable time.
If you haven’t had african before, its a good cuisine to try for something different.

Great little cafe, with a nice inviting atmosphere. Good prices and lots of choices on the menu. The enjera was so delicious, soft and spongey. So filling.
Ethiopian curries full of variety and contrast, mopped up by Injera bread. Friendly no-fuss modest atmosphere, perfect for communal eating. The Sambussa was a highlight, i really didn't expect it would be so fresh and delicious. Can't wait to come back!

Wow! So different but so amazing!!. Absolutely loved Gibe! The food was so different, nothing I had ever had before- but so incredible! The ethiopian bread was delicious along with the different 'curry like' And lentil dishes! The service is also fantastic and staff so friendly! Such great value as well, you leave feeling so full for just a fraction of the cost of a normal night out! Highly recommended, will be back!
For me this was a whole new cuisine. We shared the vegetarian mixed platter. Food was tasty and fresh. Will have to try some meat dishes next time. Great place to try if feeling adventurous

Great food, reasonable prices. I discovered Ethiopian food a few years ago in another country, and was excited to try this place out. It didn't disappoint. We had dorro wat (spiced chicken stew), raw kittifo (spiced beef in special butter, can be served rare or cooked if preferred), and the excellent yetsome benyayinetu (vegetarian combination), all served with enjera (traditional pancake, not to be missed!). The sourdough enjera flavour was excellent and it was light and tasty and perfect. The kittifo was perfect as well, with a great buttery flavour, and served with additional spice mix and cottage cheese. The dorro wat was not my favourite but loved the other dishes. The yetsome benyayinetu was second to none and I'll be back to order that again - 6 dishes, each delicious. Things like lentils, chickpeas, pickled vegetables, all done with a different distinctive spice and sauce. The meal (3 mains served with lots of enjera) and 2 beers came to $50 and filled 2 hungry people.
We'll be back for sure.

We went there for lunch for my dad's birthday. While me & my husband have been to Ethiopia, the rest of the family had no idea what to expect. Food was flavorsome and family enjoyed sharing a serve of mixed injera with meat and vegaterian stews, shiro watt, spicy beef, and extra injera between the 6 of us. I felt the food had been westernized slightly and was disappointed when the dishes weren't served on top of the injera, however still a very fine introduction to Ethiopian food. The restaurant was very relaxed with nice decorations, however the toilet had no toilet paper, and the service was friendly.
Interesting. The food was a tad too spicy for me, but my three fellow dinners loved it. The bread is very interesting and good for tearing and dipping in food. The appetiser with bread and mint and tomato was very nice.
Wanted to try something different and with such great user reviews I thought "why not". Fantastic place with friendly helpful staff, who take pleasure in informing you about their food. Will be back for sure!
We had dinner here last night for my mums birthday, I arrived with a cake and they were more than happy for put it in the fridge. The 6 of us shared two of the combination plates. The food was beautiful, full of flavour and the meat was really tender, and there was plenty of it. I can not say enough about the service. The host was genuinely friendly and was very helpful as we had never eaten this cuisine before. He was fantastic, it is very rare to find someone so genuine and not feel like they are just saying what they have to. We were so happy we gave him a piece of birthday cake too. I would highly recommend Gibe for memorable dinning experience
Just Fantastic!!. A really chilled out environment (Saturday Lunch)!! We headed there before the market for some a quick lunch, which turned into a few hours as it was so relaxing and was super kiddie friendly for our little 17month old!! Kiddie friendly in that, staff were amazing, so doting, plenty of space and even a back car park her to burn off some energy!!
First time trying African cuisine, LOVED it - ALL!!! Waiter even pointed out which ones would be ok for little one without us needing to ask!!

Sensational food. We had a buffet dinner at Gibe tonight. Tried a variety of meat and vegetarin dishes. It was full of flavour and different spices. The injera bread was soft and light. A local advised that you can ask for more chilli in the a la carte dishes... Can't wait to go back with friends
Little gem in Dandy!. Had lunch here today, my first venture into African/Ethiopian food so wasn't sure what to expect. Do not be fooled by the location, this place was excellent! The food was fragrant, tasty and delicious. We tried a mezzo style range of different dishes and each one was distinctly flavoured. I was particularly interested in the enjera (bread) which we used to soak up all the delicious gravy. The staff were polite and attentive, I would definitely return. Great dollar value also with most mains around the $13-15 mark, so well within the budget to lash out and try something new. Two thumbs up!!

My family and I found Gibe a couple of months ago and have been coming every few weeks since. It is one of the only places to get quality Ethiopian food in the eastern suburbs. The staff are wonderful and friendly and the food is simply amazing! We will be coming here many more times.
Really enjoyed it, Friday night dinner. Friendly service, tasty cheap food. Pool table in other room...good fun!
