Review Shams Restaurant - Dandenong

Really clean place with a variety of choices. Afghan food is a mix between North Indian and Mediterranean diet. Loved their succulent mix meat kebab with salad and bread. Bread is served hot and is super delicious. Goat curry was so soft and melt in your mouth without the heat. Really enjoyed the food.

Great food and suuuper nice people! I've had many doner kebabs around the local area and nothing compares to the quality of meat and delicious sauces they put in this one. I wish I had more photos of the doner kebab but I couldn't stop eating it in time for another photo - it is one of the best I've ever had. The shish kebab is also very delicious! I highly recommend anyone wanting to try a new Afghan restaurant to stop by and try this place when you come through the area. You will not be disappointed!

Food is incredible. Place needs to be a bit cleaner, a plate to use should be served with your meal, not just having to eat off of the platters. Also the staff could smile a bit more and make you feel like they are happy that you chose their restaurant in which to pay for the food they offer

Such a lovely restaurant, very affordable prices with great tasting authentic afghan food, we ordered the mantu, lamb korma and lamb skewer with rice, a side of chips which all came with complimentary bread, salad and yogurt, all the dishes where perfect and tasted amazing! The staff where lovely and provided a great service. Definitely recommend this restuarant in Dandenong and will definitely be returning when we go on holidays in Melbourne next. Generous servings for a good price. Thank you Shams

Reasonably good main dishes. But pathetic customer service - rude staff. Naan/bread was cold and when requested for fresh naan or to warm them up, they simply refused to do so. Also don't give tap water, one has to buy bottled water!!
LILICIOUS
Amazing food, been here for the past year and they maintain their services and food quality very well. The white dishes were the most recent ones as deco have been changed.
No complaints.

Beautiful kebabs value for price big chunks always filling. Comes with addition of free soup as well. Food always cooked the same with just the perfect amount of flavouring and spices. Always warm. They seem more generous every time I go there, bigger plates and bigger portions.

This is the place you want to be after a long day at work or uni. Really brightens my day whenever I come here for their food. Beautiful 10/10. One of my favourite restaurants !
- Korma Palau, mixed kebab, lamb and chicken kebab.
Vegan Food Seeker
I’m a vegan in a family that likes to come here for the meat, so I was happy that there was something delicious for me to eat and be able to join my family even though the place doesn’t advertise themselves as vegan friendly. I had the eggplant stew which was yum and in a big serving. It was a bit disappointing that it cost the same as a large plate of lamb though, considering it was all vegetables. My boyfriend is also vegan and frequently comes here with his meat-eating friends and orders a different vegetable dish which he loves. Overall, great place to catch up as a group over inexpensive delicious food.

Came here at 4pm on a Sunday and they had no chips so sadly no HSPs. My partner ordered a wrap which was chock full of shaved meat and great bang for buck. I got the mixed skewers which were all perfectly grilled and juicy! The afghan bread that came with the mixed kebab meal was HUGE, hot and just the perfect thing to tear up and have with the kebab meat! Would definitely return for the great value ($8 for wrap and $14 for mixed kebab set). Hopefully next time they have chips so we can finally satisfy that HSP craving!

Got Chicken & Lamb Skew with salad and was satisfied with what i paid for. Meat was very tender and flavourful and the salad was clean, crisp and fresh. Waiter we had was very friendly also, would recommend this place !

Every now and again you will find a really cheap eat tucked away somewhere this place does not allow Eft Poss payments but they do have an ATM. I’ve eaten here now I handful of times the food comes out really quick and as mentioned it’s rather cheap so if you feel like having a good quality cheap meal and you’re in Dandenong you can’t go past this place. Parking is a downside as is Dandenong but I’ve generally always found a park at using the metre parking.

First time try Afghan food, the place gave generous potion , for 14$ kebab given so much bread, however I didn’t know how to eat this like locals

Terrible. Does not smell or taste like Afghan kebab at all. The poorest quality of chicken cuts. The only exception was the Chilly Tomato Chutney. Credit cards are not accepted here. Would not eat here again and will not recommend.

Came here for dinner, have dined here before and keep coming back, as I am never let down by the food and service. Staff are really friendly, and the food is excellently price and generously served (lots of delicious afghan naan bread and 4 skewers per serve @ $14 each). For 3 people with bottled drinks we paid only $42. And left very happy and satisfied. The chicken is so flavourful, I would definitely recommend.

A cheap eat gem in Dandenong. Don't let the simple decor deter you. Very friendly family-run restaurant. All the local Afghani butchers recommed this as the best place for traditional Afghan food. A simple menu executed beautifully. Afghani bread baked fresh on premises. The biriani and curry are a stand-out. Shall be returning often.

Traditional Afghani food by traditional owners - love it here! Incredibly cheap food and lovely owners. Food was jam packed with flavour and servings are very generous. Visited a few times now, can't keep away when in Dandenong! Must try - Mantuu! Highly Recommended!

Enjoyed the food. The chicken is to die for. Want to go back and try the more vegetable based dishes, too.

I really enjoyed the cooking style.

Good service, cheap food.. I ordered a mixed Turkish kebab that was for good value. Ate with my family and they gave us free Afghan bread.

Excellent food. This place serves great Afghan food. The service isn't always great by Western standards, but the food is always outstanding. Nice work Sham!

Wooly Kabuli. Does anyone recall a band named "Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs"? You might not remember the band, but the song "Wooly Bully" has probably gotten stuck in your head at some time. That's what flashed in my mind when I saw the name of this restaurant as I was walking up to an afternoon shift at Dandenong Hospital.

I love kebabs, even when I'm sober. But I often get the feeling that I'm eating a Westernised version of the real thing, the way pizza outside of Italy is often not the same as what you get in the place where it originated. That's why I like kebabs from Muslim ethnic places -- I reckon they'll make it closer to the way they originated. Sham's kebab is very bread-forward. I saw wooly-bearded Pashtun-looking guys buying stacks of Afghan bread at the till for take-away, so I reckon Sham's must have a great bakery operation in the back.

The kebab was a bit difficult to chew, owing to the thickness of Afghan bread. But that's OK -- I like those things. The guy who prepped it gave some generous squirts of garlic and hot sauce over the chicken meat, so the bread soaked it up nicely and became something even better than it started as, after it got juicily macerated. The chicken chunks were ample, tender and had a bit of char to them. For $10, including a bottle of ayran buttermilk drink, it was a great cheap lunch on the way to work.

Pics on the website are misleading and is not a restaurant but rather a kabab shop. Headed here with my newly formed food club. After ordering everyone in our group was given a small plate of salad 4 baskets of turkish style bread were placed on the table along with small bowls of 2 types of sauce. One was a yogurt kind and the other a herbed watery kind. Then 4 or 5 plates of rice called Qabuli Polo came out which contained sultanas and grated carrot followed by the plates of mixed Kabab ( lamb, chicken, minced) a bowl of lamb curry and a lamb briyani (rice with lamb). Tucking in I found my favorite to be the chicken as it was very tasty and everything to be lovely and fresh. Least favorite was the minced very garlicky Kabab. The curry lamb was nice and lamb tender but not very curry tasting. All up the food was good not quite the afghan food I've had before but still good. The company and conversation is what made the night as we didn't leave until 10pm. The great thing about food group is you just never know where we'll end up, but i will try harder for it not to be a Kabab shop

Excellent & Most Satsfying Food. Halal - Afghani & Persian Menu

Fairly new restaurant. Went here with family for lunch today. The food was very fresh, very tasty and well presented. The kebabs were succulent and excellent. We got the mixed kebabs freshly cooked before us. The Afghani Qaboli Pulao was delicious and so was the eggplant with yoghurt, though they call it Eggplant stew. The Mantou which are mince filled dumplings wIth lentils and yoghurt topped was lovely. Freshly baked bread was great. The portions really large. The place is very clean & neat and can accommodate large groups or even small functions can be held here. Excellent value for money. You will be delighted with the food!
DAMMIT JANET I LOVE FOOD
Menu options were limited, service was average and the table that we sat on was rather dirty and stayed dirty the entire time we were there. Regardless of that, I would still come back here for the chicken kebabs. Only next time I’d get it as a takeaway.
