Review Wombat Hill House - Daylesford

Stephen Kim
Whenever I visit Daylesford, it is a place I stop by. Such a nice cafe with good vibe. They serve somewhat non-ordinary meals and they are very delicious. Strongly recommend you book in advance if you can. There is the coffee takeaway section as well if you just need caffeine!

Had breakfast here. Ordered poached eggs (which were cooked perfectly), on sourdough (so fresh with that expected crunch and fermented hole body), with a side of avocado and smoked salmon & a cappuccino. Coffee tasted great with signature milk leaf design. Had to come back the next day and ordered birch muesli (with two more poached eggs on the side). We were served both times by the same polite and happy staff member - at this point I wish I caught his name. But all staff were lovely (that I had observed). Cute external and internal design with little take home goodies for purchase at the counter. Such a popular place, definitely one I recommend and would go back again if I’m in the area.

Food was fantastic and the crepes were the yummiest I've ever had! My hubby and I shared the country breakfast which was huge and then the crepes. Yum yum yum! It's also a gorgeous little Cafe. Would love to visit in winter with the fireplace going. Staff were all friendly and covid standards were adhered to which is not easy for cafes to do (and a lot don't) but we definitely appreciated it!

A dog friendly cafe with excellent food and coffee. Staff were clearly both friendly to canines and humans! It was worth the wait for us and the only coffee that I found in Daylesford that was comparable to Melbourne because we are thoroughly coffee spoilt! We had the shaksuka which was delicious though tad too salty for me (personal taste) and the Turkish eggs was nice enough. Overall the 5 stars rating was based on the dog friendly, food and in particulate coffee given I found it difficult to find comparable to Melbourne coffee having been here for 3 days and I finally found it here.

You haven’t really been to Daylesford… unless you’ve been to Cliffy’s! Awesome coffee (best in town!), amazing food and they really know how to make you feel welcomed! Do yourself a favour!

This friendly cafe and store has its good reputation for a reason. Stocked with treats inside - allow yourself time to really scour the shelves. Simple transitional brunch menu. Ploughman’s board was enough as a light lunch to share - with some chippies. Kind staff and lovely outdoor area under shady trees.

Great atmosphere. Very very busy so clearly doing something right. The crepes are fantastic, I really enjoyed them. Coffee was spot on too. Be prepared to queue....it is worth the wait.

We ordered coffee and takeaway toasties and were unfortunately let down. I was really looking forward to the mushroom toastie but there were minimal mushrooms and cheese inside and it didn't taste great. We also found there was barely much ham in the ham toastie either. The coffee wasn't bad, but it looks as though the food inside the Cafe might have more effort put into it.

Very cute place, love the atmosphere her, however the service was not very nice, we ordered the burger and the lamb, the burger was quite nice, but the lamb served with stale roti which was not good at all, considering they charging around 24-25 for it, it’s quite overpriced for what it was.

We had trouble finding where this cafe was, and did 3 laps of the trail before finding where we were meant to park. Hubby had the breakfast pizza which was $20ish and large enough to be overfilling, on the otherhand I had the roasti with avocado which was $19 and I was left hungry afterwards.

Visiting the beautiful town of Daylesford, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining options. Wombat Hill House is one such place. Nestled at the top of a hill, hence the name, in the lush Botanical gardens; this beautiful cafe is surrounded by lush greenery and wildlife. With a homely and warm ambience, comfort is key here, and it's a lovely spot to relax.

We visited after walking around the gardens, and decided on a delicious afternoon tea. Coffee was lovely and the array of country baked goods was incredibly enticing. With a delicious homemade cheesecake and blueberry tart, we were left very satisfied with our choices. The cheesecake was rich and creamy, and the blueberry tart had fabulous pastry and was filled with fantastic, tart berries.

With typical country hospitality, the staff were generous and friendly even though it was busy. This cafe gets busy with lots of tourists visiting the gardens; but it's well worth a visit for some delicious country food and a relaxed vibe.

The afternoon tea here is absolutely fantastic!!!!

For $40pp you get an arrival sparkling (which was kindly swapped to a strawberry smoothie for me as a non-alcoholic), unlimited tea and coffee (we had a pot of tea and a skim latte each) and the afternoon tea platter (savouries like chicken sandwich, egg sandwich and reubin sandwich), sweets (like cheesecake, macarons, truffles, tarts and a brownie) and of course a scones with jam and cream!

The service was just out of this world, the staff were unbelievable! Loved it and fantastic value for money!!

The food was tasty, small serving sizes. The setting is lovely. The manager guy was a character and friendly but the other staff not so much. It was a bit of a struggle to order and the food came staggered but its a lovely setting and menu.

We came for high tea and after ringing twice to confirm booking and to let them know we had a someone in our group that was pregnant, they then forgot our booking and thought it was the next day. They said we'd have to now wait longer for it to be prepared. The manager gave a casual apology and said luckily we looked like patient people and offered nothing to make up for his mistake. We reminded him about pregnancy requirements and he said that wasn't a problem. He than came back awhile later and said it was now a problem and she would have to have salad instead. The salads were nice enough but not why you order high tea. Service was generally sloppy and unprofessional with things being forgotten, such as our 'belated scones' as our waitress called them as they took so long or drinks being forgotten at the counter for awhile. We were told that coffee and tea was unlimited and to just ask. We asked a waitress cleaning a table next to us and she said we'd have to go up to the counter to put it through the till and also because she knew she'd forget (we'd ordered two drinks). We asked if she could get some paper to write it down and she said she didn't have any paper. We asked if she could go and get some paper and she said she'd go get some them. We couldn't quite believe how unhelpful and rude she was. Food was enjoyable but nothing amazing. We wouldn't come back or recomend it to anyone.

Very tasty, can highly recommend the smoked trout. Perhaps a little overpriced, but worth a try. Beautiful surroundings as it’s nestled in the middle of the botanical gardens, though rug up if it’s cold weather

There are three sitting areas and we chose to sit in the back garden. A bit cold even in Autumn so it would be great if there are outdoor heaters. The garden is really nice with olive trees, lime and lemon trees. Food took awhile to arrive (more than 45 mins) even though it is Thursday not during the weekends. But it is absolutely yummy so we didn’t mind the wait. We also got a flat white with almond milk and it was to die for - smooth and creamy, most places and cafes that we have been to don’t do coffee with almond milk as nice as this place 👏🏼. Staff is very nice and friendly.

We shared a Hedgehog ($5.50) for morning tea. The comforting hedgehog was heavenly, which created a battle for the last spoonful... We both ordered lattes ($4.00) made with St. Ali Coffee.
Ayby Baby
Beautiful spot but food is definitely lacking quality. We ordered lunch so i can't speak for breakfast.
Upon arriving the indoor part was smelling of deep frying oil.

A girls weekend down in Daylesford, we came to the Wombat Hill House for brunch on a Saturday. Surrounded by beautiful scenes of nature & a colourful glasshouse, we choose to sit outside. Staff were super friendly and appreciative.

The breakfast menu was limited but we went for Zucchini & Spinach fritters, poached eggs on sourdough with spinach, mushroom and goats cheese and poached eggs on sourdough with bacon. The food itself was tasty but meal sizes could’ve been a little bigger given prices. Sadly the meals weren’t too filling either so within one hour, we were hungry again. We would come back, but it would be for lunch!

Me and my boyfriend was there on a public holiday and the cafe was so packed . Staff told me that i have to wait for 40mins for my food which understandable but when the food came out i was so disappointed because the flavor wasn't there.
My pumpkin pizza was so bland and oily. The burger was just ok but not worth for $25 and the cake was overcook and dry not pleasant to eat at all but they served decent coffee. The service was ok

The restaurant setting is so beautiful. They located in the middle of Wambat botanical garden. If you go there around spring you will see a full bloom of camellia flower near the cafe.

Will be back just for a photo and coffee but not for the food

Vege Eats
Such a nice location for a cafe, the gardens are beautiful and the cafe is really cute! The food was not really anything special in my opinion. Had the croque senor without chorizo. It was nice but very full on, was glad I shared it as I couldn’t even finish half. Also shared the fritters, they were pretty disappointing as they were a bit dry and the flavour wasn’t that nice. Was really glad I asked for a side of goats cheese as I think it really needed it.

Great little cafe surrounded by beautiful gardens. Lovely cakes and light meals, coffee & served with a smile, a very nice place to visit on any day.

Long wait for food as this place is busy and seems the kitchen gets overwhelmed. Friendly staff though and we were told there would be a wait when we ordered. Pizza looked great but didn’t deliver on the said chili hit - had much better gourmet pizzas elsewhere. Coffee cakes and pastries are good and the location within the botanical gardens is magnificent.

I came here with a group of friends. The lunch menu items didn't really interest me, so I went with one of the specials: bangers, sweet potato mash & salad. It was just ordinary. The salad was just an undressed pile of rocket and two pieces of onion. We had two friends who were still waiting on their meals for about 40 mins after we had finished ours. Quite expensive for the quality of food and slow service. We probably won't come back.

We ventured to Wombat Hill House after a recommendation from our Air BnB host. What a cute little cafe perched in the botanical gardens. It was nice and cosy inside and the menu was easy to find on our table. My boyfriend went with the classic bacon and eggs and I got the crumpets with poached fruit. The bacon was thicker cut and so delicious and my crumpets were nice and fluffy and the fruit and ricotta perfect. Would happily return on our next trip to D'ford!
Aldrin Canta
Had the bangers and sweet potato mash plus the potato, feta, caramelised onions. I thought overall it was nice, pizza was good however a little greasy.
Katrinabates98
We came here with our neighbours and expected to be amazed, however their meals were brought out and 30 minutes later the rest were brought out. By that time they had already finished. I had the iced chocolate and it tasted just like milo in a cup and was very grainy. They had coffees which weren't hot they were luke warm. Probably will never go back.
Imasugarjunkie
Great coffee and the best crumpet I have ever eaten. No joke. You need to try it out. Hubby had the breakfast pizza which he enjoyed although it was huge! We enjoyed our breakfast with the dog in the courtyard
Hannah
Last time we came the coffee and food was good but the waiter was being incredibly racist about Muslims. Today we saw multiple signs on the road and in the gardens saying the cafe was open, only to arrive and find it closed. I doubt we'll be back after these experiences.
Sindy Shing
Beautiful place like eating in a garden. A very relaxing cafe, we go there together with 10 people and sit very comfortable. Food is very nice too :)
John Wall
Lovely staff. Nice and attentive. Food was delicious and came out very fast! I'm not usually a fan of bacon and sweets but this was good. The smoked salmon char was light and filling.

Ok this was a wow if not so wow it was one of our favorite meals and places we visited in Daylesford. Cracking service venue and food. Coffee was a killer too and consistent. So good I had three. Breakfast was sensational, as was the cake we just had to try! A must visit for anyone within the region.
Food And Drink Melbourne
Best breakfast ever! is what I declared on Instagram accompanied by a photo of my smoked ocean trout dish. And it truly was divine!. (I must preface my review by adding that this breakfast was a day after I’d had the worst breakfast ever. I won’t mention that venue yet as I’m still deciding whether to officially review it or not. So I must admit that anything that was fresh and well prepared would have been great in comparison.)

Great service warm atmosphere menu has some favourites with their own spin. We went there for lunch on a Sunday and had the BLT - it was so good with the addition of an egg with thick bacon and spinach leaves and BBQ sauce on a bagel - YUM! Also tried the corned beef roll with mustard and pickles again so good but the best part was the roasted garlic aoli that accompanied the chips wow that was awesome! For beverages we had the coconut smoothie and watermelon juice which were healthy.

Always love a good lunch from WHH, with the cafe being picturesquely set amongst the backdrop of the botanical gardens in Daylesford.

The vibe is country through and through, with the cafe being full of wicker chairs as well as being stocked with local produce. The interior is bright and cheery to boot too!

Drinks wise the coffee is good, as are majority of the of the other beverages! The good is great here too, with my Fish and Chips with all the trimmings being a few cuts above average!
.
Pricewise I think it's pretty standard and representative of an eatery in Daylesford, but in terms of quality you definitely get what you pay for!

Would recommend, especially during the warmer months when you can sit outside comfortably! Nothing better.
Cynthia Giang
Pretty looking brunch food with average taste. I can't comment too much on service as interaction was minimal, but they were friendly enough. The only annoying thing was that we were seated and were then asked to move elsewhere after our food had been served because there was a big group coming in. Couldn't understand why they couldn't use the other tables that were there.

What a pretty little place snug in an almost magical forest on a foggy day! We absolutely loved the ambience and most importantly the food! Being the sister of the lake house restaurant, the food here absolutely met our expectations. We had the home made chicken pie - pastry was amazing, filling was yum ! Personally I fell in love with the home made pork sausage served on sweet potato purée with veal sauce . Food was served in a rustic portions. Overall will highly recommend visiting this cafe!
Mel
Lovely setting, rustic cottage style cafe in the botanical gardens. Nice atmosphere. Ordered the chicken & mushroom pie and the fennel & chorizo pizza. Both were cooked beautifully and oh so tasty. Staff were friendly and attentive. Will definitely be back when next in Daylesford.

We came out for a day trip to Daylesford in the Autumn with our dog, and were recommended to go to this lovely cafe in the botanical gardens. The staff were lovely and generous, turning on the outdoor heating and giving our dog a water bowl. The food was really yummy. The aioli was amazing, menu was interesting, specials were yummy, and the cake selection was huge. Really beautiful decor and outdoor setting too. Would definitely return and also recommend it.

Wonderful lunch out in the garden. Service was a little slow but they were very busy and apologized profusely. I had an amazing Croque Monsieur, and shared a carrot and red lentil soup with my mum. Husband had the potato and caramelized onion pizza which was also delicious.
Denise Hellier
We were 5 friends on Thursday....looking forward to a relaxed and delicious lunch. We were so disappointed in everything. Service was totally lacking and the food pretty bad. The zucchini fritters were badly burned, like black, the avacado on toast was swimming in oil and inedible. Won't be going back!!!

Overall a good breakfast and nice coffee. Not exceptionally friendly service but not bad either. Eggs and bacon were both nice, housemade baked beans had good flavour but were a little cold.

Wander down the garden path of Daylesford’s enchanting Wombat Hill Botanical Gardens and you’ll soon discover the charming Wombat Hill House Cafe. The café, store and kitchen garden is the brainchild of critically acclaimed, Alla Wolf-Tasker, (Executive Chef and co-owner of the Lake House), her artist husband Allan and daughter Larissa. So it’s no surprise it has become one of regional Victoria’s hottest food destinations.

Our first time at Wombat Hill House was great. Had a delicious breakfast here. Eggs, toast, mushrooms, proscuitto, chorizo...yum. Eggs were poached perfectly!

We had breakfast here in July and it was quite a lovely place. It had a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere as it was a slow, quiet morning. The staff were nice and polite while serving. My partner ordered scrambled eggs with hollandaise sauce while I got the breakfast pizza - they were both absolutely amazing and really filled us up. However, it was a bit costly for two and the only issue for us. Definitely recommend giving this place a try.

Cute little cafe in wombat hill botanical gardens. You can sit inside by the fire, outside in the back garden or semi-outside in an area I've deemed the greenhouse. There are a huge selection of cakes and meals you can eat here or have wrapped up if you'd like to have a picnic in the gardens. I was greeted with a friendly smile and staff eager to help. The flourless pear cake was sweet and strong flavoured. Mint tea was light and lovely. A nice spot for a high tea that's not high brow.

Regulars to Daylesford, we hadn’t been up to Wombat Hill House which is connected to the Lake House – one of our all-time favourites. It was incredibly cold on the Hill today so the stroll from the car to the café was both beautiful and brisk. To our surprise the café was almost full and we struggled to get a table for two, eventually moving from some inside bench seats to a table. Even more surprising was the number of people braving the plastic enclosed alfresco area that only had a few heaters.

Our second time here, and the place was just as warm and friendly as we remembered it to be. We walked it around lunch time and chose the outdoor seating. My eyes quickly landed on their salad selections on display and my they looked and sounded tasty! Our lunch involved their breakfast bruschetta, the corned beef burger (pictured), and coconut smoothies. The food and drinks were good, nothing to rave about but I'll always come back to Wombat Hill House just for the serenity and surroundings. Keep up the good work!

A cafe located at the Wombat Hill Botanical Gardens. Straight after we walk in, we were greeted by a friendly staff member who showed us to our seats. There was quite a variety on the menu including specials and the food came out quickly. A good place to go to warm up after a nice walk around the gardens.

Food great, however service very disappointing. Beautiful setting and food was nice enough, however unfortunately the service lacked a lot of attention to detail. Our relatively simple order of two breakfast dishes both came to us not how we ordered. As well as this, and although a small detail, the sign in the car park to direct patrons to the cafe was not set out, even though it was 11am and the place had been open for two hours. Small things, but not good enough in the competitive daylesford market

Yummy pizza, nice location. After visiting the park for another reason, we decided to drop into this cafe having collected and admired a leaflet advertising it when at the Lake House the night before. We settled at a comfortable table with a nice view of the garden (someone was smoking in the outside eating area and that stench turns my stomach normally but especially at the moment, thank you pregnancy) and ordered a simple pizza to share. The pizza was perfect; beautiful sugo with scrumptious mozzarella on a fascinating herby/grainy base. I enjoyed my iced coffee but did have to wait while my companion struggled to find the toilet - sounds like it's a bit of a journey to find it. Either way, delicious lunch in a lovely setting.

We were surprised with the variety and quality offered by this quaint little cafe. The food was wonderful as was the coffee and cake! Definitely worth a visit.

Confused. I ordered a pork baguette, which came immediately. I was shocked to find that the baguette was rock hard, and with a conservative guess, was probably a day old. The rocket salad inside was yellowed and dry. I don't even want to think about how old the meat was. I sat there, puzzled that this was served to me. The staff seemed to immediately know when I brought it up with them, and I was graciously offered something else on the menu. Though I am happy with the rest of the food, I still dont understand why it was appropriate to serve me such an evidently substandard baguette.
Lisa
Very pleasant & relaxing surroundings. We sat outdoors in the veggie garden section (there was also an outdoor covered section or indoors). Menu a bit limited but food was good, although not overly generous in serving size. I had a $12 open sandwich which was only 1 half of the sandwich accompanied by a pile of dressed lettuce. Still hungry afterwards.

One of our Favourites. Great place. Food and coffee are excellent. Atmosphere is great. Its really good to see that someone has turned this place back into a worthwhile stop. Only thing - you are sending me broke - every time I come there, my 5yo daughter insists that I buy her a stuffed wombat!

Such a let down. We were expecting a lovely experience given the location of this cafe and it's connection with the Lakehouse but we left disappointed and tense!
Customer service was abrupt and verging on rude, coffee was terrible and area near food display smelt like old disinfectant (I guess at least that suggests it was clean!)
Went elsewhere for a nice coffee and cake
Elainehrst
A pleasant experience. Wombat Hill House was a nice surprise, a relaxed place to be. The staff were friendly and although a very busy day we felt welcome. So very different to the Lake House where it is all stiff and formal and artificially friendly. Good to know she can do a casual relaxed place. I enjoyed my veggie pastie with a very light crisp pastry and generous tasty filling. The only thing we felt was the over priced wine it was a pretty ordinary wine , Sunbury,at 10.50 .but apart from that a pleasant experience.

This place is all about the convenience of the staff/owners: menu only displayed behind cash register (meaning you can't absorb it without getting in everyone's way), the no shoplifting signs all over the store shelves, and the tables so crowded in you can actually have other people's food falling on you as you eat. Food, some of it is okay, but a caramelised onion pizza had pretty much only potatoes on it and was really tasteless. Save yourself the trouble and go elsewhere in this great area.

Sunday Lunch. The venue is fantastic and also the outlook. I have had lunch at the cafe approx 6 months ago and the food was tasty and exciting. Last Sunday was a complete disappointment. I was with a group of 4 - the first meal was delivered to the table at least 10 minutes before the pizza ( 2 people were sharing) and after waiting another 10 minutes i went up and asked about my meal. I was quizzed in quite an off hand manner - was I sure I had ordered it, and paid., They could not find the order and finally they said they would attend to my meal. When the meal was delivered I was told " Sorry that they had found the order". The manner was very off hand, there was no apology that everyone else on the table had been finished their meals for at least 10 minutes. We all felt rather let down especially with the customer service and the lack of organisational skills. We opted to go elsewhere for coffee and cake!!
Jan

Hidden gem. Visit three days before Christmas was no disappointment. Fish and chips was perfect, as was partner's pizza. And the surroundings are magnificent. Well worth a visit.

Much more than just a charming view. I fell in love with this place on the first visit, and every time I've come back it's maintained the same high standards. A beautiful setting in the middle of lush green gardens, courtyards and indoor space that are never cluttered, and best of all is the fresh, delicious food. You can easily lose an afternoon over the $20 grazing platter - a little cheese, house dip, turkish bread and sweet house cured pickles. Or there are more substantial meals like fish and chips or tarts. Today's dish of shredded confit duck on Asian noodle salad is tasty, luxurious and refreshing.
BottloRed
Saturday Lunch. A pretty relaxed setting...the cocktails were cheap $12.50. We had the potato pizza and fish & chips and a large salad (i was hungry - didnt have breakfast). Although the potato salad wasn't anything to write home about, the fish & chips were excellent and Im sure that by going through the menu over time, you would find a better pizza.
A little light on the seasoning for both pizza and salad...BUT overall, the Wombat Hill Cafe is an amazing way to spend a couple of hours.
The decor is great and welcoming, the courtyard - dog friendly and a walk through the gardens at the end of your meal, a perfect way to spend a romantic afternoon.
We loved it because of the overall setting and relaxed nature.

Lovely atmosphere soured by rude, grumpy attitude. Gorgeous setting, beautiful decor, buzzing atmosphere (even on a drizzly grey day), and tasty food. Although this cafe is on the pricey side, the pumpkin fritters I ordered were fresh and moist, and the portion size was generous. My partner enjoyed his rice pudding and the coffee was good.
We were greeted warmly at the door by a friendly staff member (who also checked in on us during our meal and made pleasant conversation as we left) and the other servers seemed quite friendly and efficient. I was surprised though at the Basil Fawlty-esque attitude displayed by the dark-haired woman who was taking orders at the register. She seemed very angry and irritated by the customers, and she later stalked through the conservatory area scowling darkly. The people at the table next to ours also commented on her attitude, as she had answered their polite query with a less-than-gracious response. This was a shame, as it really brought the cheerful, relaxed atmosphere down.
Friendliness and common courtesy are critical in service industries, and I will always favour places that treat their customers well and create a pleasant experience. There seems to be room for improvement at Wombat Hill House ...

Breakfast with my friend last Sunday very disappointing after warm welcome from waiter at door. My avocado and dukha on sour dough was simply sliced avocado sprinkled with dukha on VERY stale bread. Asked for olive oil yo soften it but still inedable. Friends scrambled eggs were more a very dry omelate. Such a shame as the setting is gorgeous.
AR
ARROGANT,RUDE STAFF. We took some friends to this cafe last weekend and now wish we hadn't. While the food and drinks were OK, the staff were nothing but arrogant and unhelpful. It was embarrassing. Maybe Ms Wolf-Tasker should have a word to her staff about their offensive attitude. Will not be going there again.
AS
Terrible service and overpriced.
We waited an hour for our breakfast to come out.. When we asked, we were made to feel as though it was our fault.. There were no explanations and no apologies. My meal came out incorrect. The meal was quite small for $14. Will never come here again or recommend to others..

I visited with my partner for a coffee whilst walking through the botanic gardens. Being from Melbourne, one of my first thoughts was 'I wish Melbourne cafes would take a leaf out of their book!'
I think the decor and fitout is stunning, I could sit there all day admiring how lovely it is.
Having only a coffee ($3.80 and pretty good) I couldn't comment on the food nor the service really as no one else was there.
I did notice that some of the prices were a bit high, especially $6-7 for a milkshake.
Overall worth a visit but not if you are on a budget.

Waited over 50 minutes for our food, the service was all over the place, waiters coming to us with other tables food. A tad over priced

Average food, find staff a tad incompetent.

Lousy Lunch. Great place for Breakfast, superb gardens and service, and then I went for lunch, Oh dear
Asian Salad with Duck was greyish old coleslaw mixed with dry dry tiny pieces of duck leg (I hope) $16
I will take picnic lunch next time and sit in the magnificent gardens

Very good for breakfast, lunch ok. Really nice location amongst the gardens with a great cafe building surrounded by produce and a sitting spot to suit anybody. Definately try this out if you want to enjoy a meal in great surrounds whilst in daylesford, I would recommend breakfast

I expect better : [. I've been to Wombat Hill House on 3 separate occasions. The first time was 6 months ago for lunch. We arrived at 1pm and all that was available was a pre made chicken sandwiches on display in the fridge unit. My family did not want the pizza special and of course breakfast was not an option. We ordered the Chicken sandwiches, there was little else available on the menu.
To our disappointment the sandwich bread was stale due to being uncovered in the chilled unit, it had dried out . We asked if it could be toasted to which we were told NO. I then found a 4cm chicken bone in the middle of the filling. If I had not discovered the bone I would have choked. The waiter was shown the bone to which she responded " No extra charge for that ". The second visit to WHC was 2 months later. We decided to try breakfast with some friends. We arrived around 10am and were immediately told that most of the breakfast menu was unavailable. We ordered coffee and asked if we could order scrambled eggs and bacon. The waiter wasn't sure and after further discussion he reluctantly took our order. We received a small bowl of dry scrambled eggs and 1 piece of bacon( no bread either } that will be $17 each said the waiter and in future we don't do items not on the menu.
Our third and final visit was today 28/10 12. We took a friend for lunch and arrived early at 12pm. We found very little on offer... pizza, meatballs and a chicken sandwich. The special board items were N/A and we were told, that's the way it is.... There were only 10 customers in the cafe. We ordered 3 chicken sandwiches in desperation however this time we could have them toasted. The bill was $46 for 3 sandwiches and 2 soft drinks. Do not recommend.

Really really really disappointed to see the change in menu when we arrived yesterday. Been frequenting this place almost weekly since it opened and loved the menu, told everyone about it, took weekend guests there. Always something for everyone, loved the build your own tasting plate option. And now... Well there is about 6 options on a blackboard and a few pizzas. The options included pies and pasties. So pretty limited. No pate, no tasting plate. Pizza was over cooked and hard. How can such a wonderful place go so far downhill in the space of a few weeks????? Please bring back the old menu!!!! Until then it's off to the red star for us.

Yummy. This was myself and my wives favorite restaraunt on our entire trip. Its a cute little cafe with warm service and tasty food that is served quickly. We will cherish our memories here

Nice people nice coffee. We walked through the rain to Wombat Hill House and came across a lovely summerhouse. We were only there for a takeaway coffee but looking at the pizzas we wished we hadn't brought a picnic lunch. Next time. Staff were very nice to deal with and honest! I had forgotten to get the change but they hadn't.

It's not the Lake House nor does it pretend to be ... Been here a number of times and think as cafes go it is good value in a delightful settiing.Have had the sandwiches, a pizza, a pie and the meatballs - all had heaps of flavour and a cut above some of the other Daylesford cafe dishes in food and value. I don't like going up to the counter to order but that' s the way it is. Don't expect the Lake House and take a walk through the Botanic Gardens. That's free and delightful.
Fitangel
Went in at 12 asked if they can squeeze us in for breakfast. Yes he said. Go to counter and get told no and also an arrogant look by the chef. No apology for their misinforming and bad attitude to go with it. So we walked out. Was my favourite spot in Dayleford! You have lost my custom. Attitude and arrogance is not going to get you customers. And I will certainly spread the word on Social media! Enjoy your day.

My guess is that the bad reviews for this place are to do with perhaps unrealistic expectations? However we ate there today and felt the food was slightlly above average comfort food at a reasonable price. I had a special, being confit duckk on a white bean cassoulet- it was hearty, the diuck yumily salty and falling of the bone..partner had the meatballs, once again a hearty meal with a lovely creamy mash. Please do not raise your expectations too much, yes they use a microwave but the meals were greac value. Enjoy....

Sweet little cafe with lovely decor and friendly staff. Coffees and chai lattes were great, food was well presented but not outstanding in taste.

Comfortable, warm, great coffees awesome staff...especially the chap who brought my phone up to the car park in the rain after my forgetfulness! Above and beyond-highly reccomeded

Great location but very ordinary meal. Our $16 curry was tepid and tiny. This tasted like it had been microwaved (not for very long) and was bland. Left feeling hungry and dissatisfied. The lone waitress did a fantastic job.

Good food and atmosphere, but definitely overpriced. This cafe definitely has a good atmosphere. I loved the decor and the busy vibe. My friend and I agreed that the flavours were pleasant, but not amazing. The portions were JUST enough, but were very pricey for their size (2 slices of ciabatta served with mushroom for $18..)

Had a lovely breakfast, cafe looks fab, love the back garden with the veggies growing. We went early to avoid the crowds, had great service, delish chai latte, love the corn fritters and the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon bagel. Will definitely be back.

Lovely decor, stunning location and fantastic food. After a long time wanting to visit this cafe, it sure didn't disappoint. After a relaxing wonder through the wombat hill gardens, we settled into a lovely table in the kitchen garden, our meals were lovely, service friendly and location stunning. A vist here while in daylesford recommended. On the hit list: Suckling Pork Baguette, Wombat Bloody Mary and Orange Cake.

I visited wombat hill house yesterday and decided to give my opinion. Before i read through other peoples reviews. I cannot believe them. When myself and my partner went to wombat yeaterday we felt nothing but relaxed and at peace as were surrounded by the beautiful botanicals and nature itself. The cafe itself is a small, beautiful, almost cottage like, restarunt. The staff were pumping weather it was searving customers or making sure customers were taken care of. We ordered our food (which i believe to be accuratly priced, but not expencive) and sat and watched as the chefs in the kitchen pumped out not only our food but the rest of the full cafe's. Ive noticed in some reviews that people complain about how long there meals took, well to be honest, who cares? We were happy to wait because we could take the time to relax, enjoy our drinks, and even explore the scenery. When the food arrived it was a perfect portion size, enough to please the palate but not too much to make us feel stuffed. All in all we had an amazing lunch and afternoon and we will deffently be going back :)

Disappointment and overpriced. What a let down. We are a big fan of its cousin, the Lake House. So we were eager to try this place out.
The cafe was beautiful. One of the best I have been to. But the food and service was not up to standard.

We ordered two items off the menu, and it took more than ONE HOUR for the food to get out. We approached the waitresses and no-one seemed to know what was going on.

The food came out salty and totally uninspiring. The portions were small, too.

Lovely decor, but tsk tsk taskers!. I really loved the taste of the chocolate milkshake, however, I did see them using coles homebrand ice cream to make it. tsk tsk!
Not sure if it was always like this, but a lot of the items we tried to order, were not available on the day.
My turkey sandwich contained really moist succulet turkey breast, but the toast was a little dry and thin..
Also had a chocolate hedgehog, but it seemed like it had been made from recycled short bread crumbs...

A refreshingly cool haven to relax on a hot, sunny day. Fresh and lively tasting salads, non bottled iced tea and lush greenery as a backdrop. Lots of local produce proudly displayed and available to purchase. Enjoy the food, good coffee, ambience and relax!

Disapointing to have 4 main meals too salty or stale too eat and stale biscuits The atmosphere is lovely but you queue for an hour the food is pricey for cafe brunch..$35 for a salad , juice and panacotta (again tiny serve) The main meat balls on heavenly mash consisted of two meat balls the size of a 20cent coin and two spoons of mash in sauce! $17 Food is kept in open dishes too look good but ruins freshness Maybe better forbreakfast but I wouldn't risk it!

Waited for one hour for a tasting plate of local meats, a couple of slices of bread & the "daily salad", which was a bowl of rocket! Very disappointing & felt very ripped-off. Will not be going there again.

There is an amazing atmosphere and ambience at Wombat Hill Cafe. Very nice coffee and our breakfast was, on the whole, very nice also. I had an issue with a ricotta hot cake that wasn't cooked. We will definitely be back, however.

Deelish food, laid back atmosphere, great coffee!. This was our first visit to Wombat Hill House and I'm already planning a return visit. We visited for breakfast, I had baked eggs with chorizo which was a perfect size and just fantastic. My husband had coddled eggs with salmon on bagels, which he reported was also delicious.
This was also the kind of place where one coffee was not enough, so good we had another!.
Prices were also pleasantly surprising, the lunch menu looked very impressive and great value too.

The cafe serves up simple seasonal food, sourced from the local area. I tried the Moroccan Meatballs with couscous which was fantastic.

With the name of "Wombat Hill House", how could you not love the place? Nestled within the picturesque Wombat Hill Botanical Gardens in Daylesford, the vibe was very Beatrix Potterish with a board of wombat sightings locations . It was just a magical environment. As we were famished from the drive up from Melbourne, we ordered a good fry up. Fish and chips. The fish was whiting and it came with shoestring fries and aioli. Perfectly done. The only downside was that whiting, being whiting was a bit on the wee side. The eggplant curry with basmati rice was more substantial and it was flavourful without the spicy heat. It came with a little side bowl of carrot pickles.

So far I've visited Wombat Hill House three times, and I'm already contemplating when I'll have an excuse to return.
DAMMIT JANET I LOVE FOOD
This large open cafe has a great relaxed feel. You can choose to sit amongst a charming vegetable garden out the back or at the cheerful side courtyard or perhaps inside where everything is neat and homely. It’s a shame that the food here mediocre and rather expensive considering the serving sizes. Note that this place is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

I’ve been meaning to return my good friend G’s copy of Eat, Pray, Love for a while now. For anybody who hasn’t seen it, I highly recommend it! The scenes shot in Italy are amazing. And all that food, glorious food! The first time I saw it, I just wanted to jump on a plane, fly all the way to Rome and plummet into a food-induced coma.

This little cafe really had a homely feel with its open fire, comfy couches, and great looking comfort food we could see being served up to other diners...

We popped in for breakfast ( after a disappointing $500 degustation at Mercato the night before ) and much to my delight it was absolutely fantastic.
Eat Drink Dream
What can I say, love love loved this place! We headed here for brekkie and after short stroll through the botanical gardens came to the Wombat Hill café. It’s so nicely done inside with tantalizing displays of cakes and biscuits.
Hold The Peas
It was pretty average. The base was crispy on the outside but soggy in the middle and the topping didn’t have a lot of flavour.

The food, as expected, was great! I had the Salmon Bagel whilst J had the breakfast pizza. We were both happy campers after that.

Last year, we day-tripped to Daylesford – brunching at Breakfast and Beer, riding the sleepy steam train that runs to and from Musk, and lunching at Cliffy’s Emporium. Read all about it in Part 1 of our touring guide. Then in the afternoon, we sipped yummy red wines at Passing Clouds and bought up big at temple of all things meaty and cured, Istra Smallgoods. This was followed with a visit to the Daylesford Cider Company, a couple of glasses of wine and a read of the weekend papers at the Perfect Drop (recently changed hands) and dinner at the Farmers Arms Hotel. All this and more is covered in Part 2 . Phew, you would have thought we had seen it all. While we had ticked a lot of things off the list, we were keen to return – and this time we were doing it in style. Checking into Peppers Hepburn Springs, dining at the hotel’s onsite restaurant The Argus , and taking time out of our busy eating and drinking schedule with spa treatments at The Mineral Spa. But first, breakfast – and this

Well done Wolf-Taskers et al. - Wombat Hill House is a triumph and a delightful addition to the Botanic Gardens. I, for one, cannot wait to head back to sample the lunch menu!

The thing I like about having scones is they aren’t sweet, and you decide how sweet you want them to be by adding however much jam you want.

The Lawyer opted for a pheasant terrine w cumberland sauce and grilled sourdough. He really liked the terrie. The deliciously sticky and glistening cumberland sauce helped bring out the tender flavour of the pheasant. Propz for the incredibly thin slivers of orange peel in the sauce.
