Review Khao Thip - Doncaster East

Great Thai food, our go to place for Thai! Well priced, great dishes and service. Highly recommend😊

Blandest Pad See Ewe I have ever attempted to eat. a couple of pieces of chicken weren't cooked properly. The only word I can find to describe it properly anaemic.

What a gem of a find! We made a last minute booking for a birthday dinner. Large group of 11 (8 adults and 3 children) From the our call to book to our arrival, the staff were incredibly accommodating. The food was amazing! We had the banquet and couldn’t have been happier. The drinks could have been filled more, the glasses were only filled 3/4 and they weren’t wanting to fill (even after we asked) But this is a small negative on an otherwise wonderful evening. We’ll absolutely be back!

Friendly staff, reasonable price, delicious food. Will go back there again.

The best Thai restaurant in Doncaster East….another HAPPY CUSTOMER.

First try and it’s worth the visit. Ordered green curry with chicken and stir fry beans with crispy pork. Customer service is great as well.

A hidden gem, I made an online order for a Green Curry and a Massaman Curry and they were both so flavourful. Price is very reasonable for the food you get and experience overall was fantastic. Would recommend

Delicious curries, however small portions. If you like spicy, the jungle curry is quite a good one. Very tasty sauce with lots of vegetables.

Tom Yum soup was yum, however my Ka Prao tasted distinctly Chinese, with Chinese vegetables and no Thai flavours whatsoever? The only time I've had Chinese tasting Thai.

My family and I love this restaurant. The best Thai in Doncaster. Service is great. Food is so delicious. We are regulars. Love it. Pad see ew prawns is my favourite dish.

Never eaten in but it is our go to Thai take away place. Any crispy pork dish is amazing. Have never been disappointed with the food, just shattered we’re a little too far to get through Uber Eats

Picked up some take away on the way home.
Such delicious food, it tasted really fresh and full of flavour and prices and servings sizes are definitely a great match. We ordered massaman curry and pad Thai.

Service was very friendly, I’ve yet to find a Thai restaurant where the service isn’t already amazing.

The interior aswell looks like a nice place for a local dinner to get out of the house. Well presented clean and furnished to the skies

First time and won’t be last time. Looking forward to coming back.

We felt like Thai food. A bit sick of our usuals that haven’t been up to scratch, we tried something new. We weren’t disappointed. This place had easily the best red duck curry I’ve had in years! We chose the spicier dishes (no kids!!). We had a long bean stir fry (if I was being harsh it was a bit light on beans but oh, so tasty and fresh), a red duck curry (delish) and a chef’s special Tom yum hot pot (actually a steam boat - that was tasty but not what I had mind). With one serve of steamed rice between two it was comforting to know a doggie bag was available! We made it through, after eating a bit too much, which meant no dessert - I had looked forward to deep fried ice cream - maybe next time. Friendly service, clearly lots of regulars, we’ll go back!

Such lovely, authentic Thai food! Every dish we had lived up to our expectations and more. Their Chiang Mai speciality, Khao Soi noodle was packed with flavour. Oyster entree with a touch of Thai was a delight. Roast pork basil stir fry won our votes too! Love the Thai hospitality and cosy ambience!

Delicious Thai restaurant. We ordered the chicken pad Thai, beef see ewe, prawn spring rolls and crab spring rolls... it was delicious! Whilst it’s a little on the pricier side, the take away containers are packed full of noodles. I deducted a point because I think the noodles needed some more vegetables. Will be back :)

After spending the last week in bed with the flu, made the executive decision to have a quiet dinner out with one of the klan. Drove off initially heading to a local cafe but remembered this quaint thai place in doncaster east and headed there instead. Plenty of empty tables , but don't let that fool you; food is f#$king amazing! The majority of their business is phone order takeaway so avoid sitting near the door (mental note for next time). We ordered sweet and sour chicken with vegetables with steamed rice, pad thai with prawns and chicken and vegetable spring rolls for entree. Fresh flavours , fresh produce and beautifully presented. Can't fault this place. They lose 1 point for the 80s decor. Apart from that do yourself a favour and head on down.

I have been visiting many thai restaurant in east area, but none of them were very authentic, until 3 months ago I visited this restaurant. The food here is amazing. My favourites are pad thai, fish with tamarind sauce and tom yum seafood. I love the lime leaves in the pad thai soup which added the authenticity of the dish. The waitress were attentive and friendly. The best thai restaurant in Doncaster area.

We were supposed to dine in, arrived at exactly 9:00pm and their sign said "OPEN" but when we tried to go in they refused and said the kitchen is closed. Very disappointed because we came all the way from North Melbourne

Visited on a Saturday night and it was busy. Tables were all booked and walk ins had to wait 5-10 minutes for a table, but all were accommodated. If you want to visit, I suggest you book. We were near the front door, which was a bit chilli with the door opening and closing all the time.
The service was good, but as it was busy we had to catch the eye of staff for ordering and the bill at then end. The food came to the table together as requested. Individual entrees first, then main together as we were sharing.
It is BYO wine and they do provide a wine cooler, just look for the ice!!!! You may need to ask for more, like we did!!
The food was good though. For entrees we had a soup and the mixed plate, which is a small selection of the popular entrees, such as fish cakes, prawn, spring roll etc.
For mains we had the good old green chicken curry, satay vegetables and the chefs special, prawn casserole with glass noodles. Additionally, jasmine rice and a roti. All very nice and it was more than enough to for the 3 of us. We were full!!!!
The total bill was under $100.
The restaurant is close by, so we will definitely be back.

A great local joint with beautiful Thai-style decor. We had the Pad Thai (w/chicken) and Pad See Ewe (w/beef), both were flavourful and well-portioned. There's lots of menu options, something for everyone! Dessert specials available (think mango ice cream)!

Ambience: casual dining, warm lit, with 80s genre music on the radio and a good flow of customers dine in and takeout.

Service: though a little lukewarm at the start, it ended with smiles and politeness

Food: Nicely presented, average portioning, can't say it was the best or most authentic Thai food I've tried but we finished everything and they do have a good menu variety. Maybe will try their curry next time.

🌟🌟🌟Kratong Tong - Patty Shell with Minced Chicken with corn, carrot, green pea

🌟🌟🌟Pla Phuket - Deep Fried Fish Fillets in batter and Tamarind Sauce

🌟🌟Khao Pad Supparos - Fried Rice with Beef Pineapple & Vegetables

🌟🌟🌟Sticky Rice w Mango Ice Cream with Toddy Palm Seeds

Price: $$ slightly more expensive for Asian diners

Great range of food and great flavours!! The service has also been excellent the few times I've been here. Good value for money and really well presented dishes!

Came here tonight to try this place, have lived around the corner for years but just noticed it. Staff were very friendly and attentive, food came out quickly even though they were quite busy. Had the satay chicken skewers and mixed entree, both were nice, then for mains we had Deep fried Barramundi, Green Curry and Beef Salad with a side of roti and coconut rice.
The flavour of the fish was very nice as was the curry, however the beef salad was a bit bland and the meat was tough. Overall nice little local Thai restaurant.

A Hidden Gem!

Brilliant food, quick & good service, not too much drama on the decor, quiet ambiance. Rating this place the best thai food in Melbourne!
Jim Kotsa
Swasdi, The owner is very welcoming and always spares time to have a chat and make sure we are comfortable. The food is nice and reasonably priced, not the best Thai food I have had but worth a visit. Pad Thai noodles are great, but the green curry has an unusual flavour I just can't put my finger on it.

Came here for dinner with the family (8 people in total). Can't fault the food but the service was appalling. We arrived at 6pm and our mains still hadn't come out by 7.20! No apology, no explanation.. we had to go up and ask what was happening.. Clearly our food was forgotten but there was so much that could have been done from their end - an apology maybe? Disappointed and frustrated.. was very HANGRY.

Excellent food, nice ambience and tamarind candies at the end makes it a very good dining experience. Recommended place for couples, curries are a delight.

I just returned from Thailand and was missing the food so visited Khao Thip. Quick and friendly service, lots of vegetarian options (which I appreciated) and definitely reasonably priced. Appetisers a bit on the small side but still yummy. For main, I had the Spicy Thai Red Curry and it was delish! Would certainly dine here again.

Every now and again you get an amazing surprise when dining out, tonight was ours.

Have eaten here lots of times before and enjoyed it, but tonight for some reason the food and atmosphere seemed a step up. Despite the security alarm going off mid meal.

It is such a shame the wine list is probably one of the worst in Melbourne, which probably also explains why most people BYO.

What is it with Asian style restaurants that know and love their food and present it so well, but settle for below average "supermarket" type wine lists.

We enjoyed an Antonio Luce Sangiovese that complimented the food so well, just enough spice.

Our highlight tonight was our waitress - a Malaysian women that actually knew something about wine and food. They should put her in charge of the wine list !! She also liked the Antonio Luce Sangiovese.

The food was great and very affordable, the service was very friendly and amazing.

Will be back and might try and chat to them about offering a better wine selection to match their amazing food.

And they also need to fix the background radio station and change to more appropriate music.

They would have scored way higher, but for the wine list....

A great little restaurant tucked away in the suburbs. The second we walked in I was impressed by the warm interior, the decorations and the gracious host who greeted us quickly and with a smile. The waitress was very attentive and ensured that we were happy with the food without being overbearing.

The satay chicken and vegetables was delicious with a sweet peanut sauce. The green curry and great flavour, although it could have done with a bit more beef.

Over all a gem of a restaurant if you're looking for Thai in the eastern suburbs.

Exp. Had dinner with a friend here after not having been here for some years. She was a regular diner and used to speak highly of it. After our most recent visit we will not be coming back as there was a large piece of raw meat in our dish. We found this halfway though eating the dish and didn't want to eat anymore. My friend felt ill at the thought that she may have accidentally eaten a piece herself. We pointed this out to the waitress and she said oh, pretty disappointing really. Would expect a little more than that if that happens. We still paid and didn't ask for a discount, to have offered an apology would have been sufficient but it was not forthcoming. There was not even a thank you when paying. Won't be coming back again.

I think there may be new owners as the food and service wasn't very good. I was very disappointed to find a raw piece of chicken in my food. Made the waitress aware of it but no apology offered. No discount given for the experience and even no thank you for the bill being paid. I was not happy with my experience and I think the restaurant has new owners. I used to go there with friends but won't be back. Disappointed.

Terrible Restaurant. First time ordering, last time ordering. Its been over 1.5 hours and still no delivery. If I was sitting in your restaurant would it take this long to get a meal??? If you cant provide a delivery service within a respectable time frame then don't offer it. I recommend ordering from some where like One Thai in Balywn!

Food is great, speed is too slow. We only had few tables at the time, and waited good 40-60 minutes for 3 meals. Take away is always the priority looks like in this shop. Other than that, overall is good, will go back

Fantastic Thai!. We've been going here since I was a kid. Beautiful food, lovely ambience and great price, highly recommend!!

The food was full of MSG. A.... The food was full of MSG.
Also ordered two serves of roti bread with peanut sauce (take away) and was only given a tiny amount of sauce - not even enough for one serve let alone two!
Really dislike it when restaurants are stingy with the sauce! :-/

Great environment. Dinner generally won't be under $15pp though!. Very busy and nice environment with great tasting food! I ordered their Pad Thai which was a lot sweeter than other Pad Thai flavours I've tried so I'm not sure how authentic their flavours are (or if they are trying to market flavours that they think are more well accepted). I personally like food sweet anyway so I still thought it was great. The serving size was just right (not small) for me and their staff were smiling and friendly! I would come back for their curry next time although if you order curry the dollar sign should really be two $$ signs because you are most likely to pay extra for rice (as it comes separately) which will add up to more than $15 (a lot of their sharing dishes are more than $15)

Delicious food! Sure to go back again!! Great atmosphere too. Make reservation! Place fills up quickly! We went to khao for our valentines day dinner. We were surprised by the little heart shaped jelly that was served to us. Pleasant service too :)

Best Thai Best Price. You really can't go past this local Thai restaurant. We take our three teenage sons there regularly on most Sunday nights and the food is always very tasty, served quickly and at a great price.
For a get together with friends for great food and which won't break the budget - don't go past this place. Heaps of GF and vegetarian options. The beef massaman is among the best we've tried, as is the spicy pork.
Melbfoodie
Consistent. This is where I mostly go for Thai take away or to take the family for a relaxed dinner. I'm always happy with the consistency of the dishes. My favourite dish is the crispy pork stir fry with the Pad Gra Pow sauce...yum! They do good curries and stir fries and decent entrees. It is not a fine dining experience and the service is OK but the prices are reasonable and the the food is reliable. I am yet to find a better Thai restaurant in the Doncaster/Blackburn area. Maybe only Jintana matches it. 8.5/10.

Not what it used to be. Been here probably 20 times in 3 years but mainly takeaway. Tonight we decided to dine in and we couldn't believe how bad the food was. Despite what the friendly staff said when asked whether there were new owners, we knew that the menu and the food was different. Gone were the tasty plump beef curry, replaced with cheap chewy off cuts of beef that ruined the dish. We also ordered Pad See which looked like something out of can. The beef was dry and the dish tasted terrible what a let down. The lamb curry was the one dish we all liked but it didn't enspire us to want to come back again which is a real dissappointment for us. We won't be coming back
Alison
Absolutly shocking. Booked for dinner @7.30 and walked out at 2040 because we had not been served. The people next to us had been there since 7 and were thinking the same thing. Very disappointing. There were alot of unhappy customers.

Slow service. This was my second visit to Khao Thip. From my first experience, it was a very busy restaurant but the service was fast and the food was very good. However, it was a disappointing dinner for second time. I wonder whether this restaurant has changed management. There was only one waitress serving in the restaurant for the whole night. I could see most diners were unhappy with the slow service including the take away customers. She was slow in bringing us to the seat, taking the order and serving the the meals.
Besides, the food quality was average compared with our first visit. We ordered Tom Yum soup. The soup has the right sourness taste but it wasn't spicy at all. It was a bit cold when it was served too. The spring roll was good and I was glad to see that it was served with their home made sweet chilli sauce.
Nevertheless, the waitress was friendly.

Steamed fish was divine. Food was excellent, service was great and it was very reasonably priced!

Great thai place. Doesn't look like anything fancy but the good is great and extremely affordable!

Love the Pad See Ewe crispy pork!! Also barramundi deep fried with curry is very good aswell! Overall satisfied!

Awesome thai, wonderful service and very good prices. Fantastic for groups.

A local favourite. The steamed barramundi with lemon is a must. The Thai beef salad is excellent and so is the tamarind prawns. I keep going back.
Coffeesnob
Busy take away joint. Slow service but very polite and pleasant staff. Food is average Australian style thai food. Not bad at that price.

Slow Service, Decent food. The food is ok- presented nicely. The oysters in tamarind sauce was the highlight.
The soups tasted like frozen ingredients into broth and then heated by microwave.
A long wait for food to arrive. During this wait, drinks were not served even when ordered at the start.
The service is disorderly. For example, for our party of 6, the entrees arrived at vastly different times, meaning an individual would be eating while a number of other hungry people watched. Same applied to the main dishes. Still, a decent Thai Restauran, but can improve substantially with a bit of attention to the above

Very slow service but friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Prepare your self for a long wait for your food though

Great Thai food. Great food really fresh

Reliably Good. This has been our family's 'local thai" for the last few years and it has consistently provided excellent food. Recommend the Oysters entree, and the whole deep fried barramundi as a main. The Tom Yum soup is beautifully balanced and very authentic. Pad Thai is good (but I am not a fan) Recommend not seating too close to front door as it gives an icy blast whenever it opens and is often left ajar. Sit deeper inside and glow in the friendly service.

Have been going to this place regularly over the last couple of years and it has never failed to satisfy me. Reasonably priced delicious food. Especially love their curries.

Steam fish wh lemon is really good. Don't forget to try their red curry chicken. They are packed of pp during fri n sat. Ensure u make a booking.

Very ordinary. As it's close to home, I grabbed some take away from the local Thai restaurant. Unfortunately, I won't be going back. The Pad Thai was bland and Stir Fry was spicy but without the balance of flavors.

I have eaten at Khao Thip Thai Restaurant several times now, and got take away for my birthday today.
I have been impressed by the quality and flavour of the food each and every time i have eaten at Khao Thip.
The prices are very reasonable, and the staff are always friendly.
The tom yum prawn soup is delicious!
Gumice
Old favorite of ours. My elderly father-in-law craves the oyster entree and we can't hold him back. You can have lots of fun tricking him into thinking there are still more oysters under the (now empty) clay tray lids...

Food is consistent.

BYO and licenced (BYO'ers can visit Nick or Dan next door).

Only issue can be the service response. It's always friendly and helpful but struggles when under load (best to dine during the earlier hours)....

Been coming here for so long I can't remember......

I love this place! have eaten there many time and love their food.
