As a person, that has travels the world and tried many different aspects of Thai cuisine.
Som Thai, definitely rates well.
The food was absolutely delicious and the interior was inviting.
I’m definitely looking forward to bringing friends here.
Not sure why they cover the front windows which made it less inviting, I almost turned away. Came alone for a quick Thai fix and it was a slow Weds night in terms of people and service. The Penang Pork Belly on their specials menu was thick rich and just mild enough, a lovely rendition on curry that went very well with the NZ Sauv Blanc. No complaints here.
The service was great, the food were delicious. The crispy pork belly could be a little bit hard to chew.

Thai Restaurant in Doncaster.
The place is quite missable, as you can't see inside the restaurant. The place is an okay size and staff was friendly. Food didn't take long too.
The menu was quite limited, and my mom was craving for pineapple fried rice which wasn't in the menu but the chef made it for us which was really nice. It was quite delish, with fresh seafood and great portion, bit on the wetter side but not too wet.
Papaya salad was another uymm dish, it was sweet, sour and salty with just the right amount and papaya were fresh. The pork skewers were juicy and flavorful!
Egg net pad thai came with king prawns which were fried well, juicy and crispy on the outside. Pad thai itself was just the right flavor, egg net was yummy and portion was satisfying.
Tom yum soup was tad bit small but tasty, not too sour nor spicy which I liked.
Laslty we had banan fritters for desserts and it was yummy, especially the coconut ice cream! I loved the fact there were shredded coconut on the batter, but I do think the batter was bit thick on some pieces.
Overall, a tad bit pricier than most thai places but with good food that delivers.
P.S Dinner menu differs from Zomato menu

This restaurant is run by chef who worked in big hotels in Thailand. The Pad Thai was authentic and Pork belly curry was very yummy. Plating was done professionally too. Worth the price!
Our first time trying Som Thai and we absolutely loved it! 😍😍 Incredibly delicious dishes and really lovely staff.
We started off with the seared scallops which were tangy and juicy! The grilled pork skewers with a side of paw paw salad was also a really good entrée (for people who like a bit of spice in their life). The soft shell crab curry is a MUST TRY 👌👌👌 and the pork belly with Asian greens in garlic and soy is a classic favourite!
Definitely worth a visit if you're in the East! 👏👏👏
Although I’m not a big fan of Asian food, but this place serves delicious Thai food. I would recommend this restaurant for a casual night out.
I’m a vegetarian and very fussy with my Asian veggies but this place does the best stir fry Asian vegetables I’ve ever had. I live down the road and eat from here very often! So good.
First of all, the menu is an old one. Prices now are much higher.
Food was good, service was decent. Ordered the pad Thai with king prawns and green curry. Green curry was very good but the pad thai was a little disappointing. Will try the Tom yum soup and beef massaman the next time!
Really good and bold flavours, service was very busy but still attentive. Order the barramundi! This place missed out on the 5 because the massaman curry was way too watered down and runny for our liking. Will be back
I have a severe nut allergy and have had trouble with thai restaurants in the past with them not being able to accomodate for my allergy. I have never had a problem here and the staff are always very friendly and know exactly what I can and can't order so I don't have to worry. Food is also great!!
My all time favourite Thai restaurant. Really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. I love the chicken red curry and the honey beef. Would love to know the recipe as I really can’t get enough of the food at Som Thai!! Great customer service, quick and friendly. Highly recommend!
Great place for some quality Thai food in the Doncaster East area. The menu inside was a lot smaller than the takeaway menu however you could still order from it but the prices jumped up by around $5 per dish which was a bit disappointing but understandable as well. Pad see ew was delicious with decent quantity and my friend enjoyed the BBQ pork as well. Roti with peanut sauce was delicious but best to eat as soon as it comes out as it dried up quickly when we focused on our mains more. Great place, but scary on the outside with no windows to see in but otherwise quite nice inside with mood lighting. Would come back again!
One of the best Thai places you will Goto. Thai Green Curry was fantastic nice creamy texture and flavours. Reasonable prices and recommend giving it a go if you haven't already. Heard that they also do a mean deep fried soft shell crab which is only available on certain nights.
Som Thai is a small Thai restaurant located in the Doncaster East section of Blackburn Road. Although the area is not particularly close to any major hubs, there are still quite a few restaurants open, including the popular Tender Trap and Taipan.
I visited several times last year, my first experience with Thai food. I don't usually enjoy South East/Middle East due to their strong scent and spices, however their Thai food was amazing. I cannot comment on their curry as I couldn't even dare myself to try, but other main and fish platters were great!
Great fresh food, friendly staff and clean restaurant. Green chicken curry with coconut rice is fantastic and the Tom yum soup is also great. Really fresh, fragrant food with a bit of spice to tickle the taste buds. Portion sizes were decent. Staff were really nice and the restaurant was pleasant inside. Gold cutlery was heavy and very clean to use. Highly reccomend coming here, food is great and service is pretty good.
Went into restaurant by chance as we were driving past the area looking for a quick feed. Ordered three dishes and all were fantastic. Had the deep fried barramundi with apple salad which was in the specials menu. Hope it's still on the special menu cause we're going back this weekend with some friends. Great local and better than most Thai restaurants out there.
First time visiting it. Heard it is the best around the suburb so quite eager to try. Had the larb gai, som tum pork BBQ and duck curry. Yes! It is not a disappointment! Every dish is well balanced and tasty. Portion is small but enough. I can't wait to go again !
You enter via a traditional wooden door and step into a dimly lit space with soft Norah Jones style music playing, walls covered in framed posters from The King and I. There was such a strong sense of atmosphere I found myself wondering whether the food would measure up as I sat there waiting for my friend. Soon the intoxicating scent of tom yum starred wafting from the table next to me and I knew it was going to be a wonderful discovery. Abba-solutely lovvved it. The flaky roti and satay sauce was the best I've had. And a generous amount of sauce given too. Coconut rice was lovely and fragrant which naturally paired well with my massamum beef. My friend had the Thai beef salad (the diet life) and the chicken skewers. She loved it so much she took the takeaway menu home. No wonder the place was packed on a Monday night. Not just another suburban Thai joint
Som Thai Restaurant serves hearty, well-plated and delicious Thai dishes. After being recommended this place, my friend and I came here on a Monday night for dinner. We shared their Thai spring rolls (6 pieces) and their Masaman beef curry, with a side of steamed rice and roti each. The beef in the curry was very tender and the creamy, filling curry went well with the rice and roti. Would love to come back and try their other dishes.
A party of five of us ate here tonight (a Tuesday night) and it was delicious. We had Pad Thai, Green Curry Chicken, Crispy Pork Belly, Ginger Chicken and Honey Beef. Since there was a birthday, one of us also had the chocolate dumplings, which was unusual but nice.
Staff very helpful, food came out quickly - and the menu is marked with "GF" for gluten free and "Veg" for vegetarian, so no problems there. In a little strip of shops, so parking is a breeze too.
Loved the kitschy movie posters for "The King and I".
Recommended.
Above average authentic Thai food. Good service as well. Highly recommend this restaurant for any serious foodie. Good ambience for nice dining experience.
Oh Wow get your taste buds ready for a treat.
We came here for a girls night and when first seated where disappointed to find the menu nothing like what is on here and a lots smaller. We decided to make the most of it and ordered our food. Well were we glad we did.
For entree we had the standard
Spring Rolls very bland wouldn't order again
Chicken Satay- Fantastic, juicy not oily and fantastic tasting sauce
Mains
Ginger chicken an absolute winner for me, so full of flavour, really fresh not oily and didn't feel like it had any commercial sauce or ingredients in it. I am already craving it again.
Massamam Beef-One of the best flavour wise I've had and the meat was so tender.
Tofu Curry for our Veggie friend- A little hot for us but the underlying flavour was great
The only dish we didn't like was the chicken and cashew, it was again full of fresh ingredients but was very very sweet, tasted like honey which is ok if thats what your after so its not a bad dish just not to our liking.
And finally so many restaurants get the basic coconut rice wrong, not here is was really full of flavour and not gluggy at all.
All in all I cant wait to go back again and have my ginger chicken and a few other things on the menu I had my eye on.
Just another suburban Thai restaurant? Hmmm...maybe in days past, but not during our most recent trip! Click the ↓↓ link below ↓↓ to check out the new, fresh & on-trend dishes Som Thai are serving up!
Definitely one of my favourite restaurants, every dish they serve looks good, tastes great. The staff are always so attentive and try their best to make you feel most welcomed - super friendly! Bonus is the place is done up so well
Dimly lit, nicely fitted out Thai Restaurant amongst many other eateries in Donburn so parking can be a nightmare! Went here on a Public Holiday Friday night. 85% full and the place was buzzing. 15% Public Holiday surcharge applied.
Quickly seated and offered drinks straight away...good start!
Started with chicken satay sticks and golden bags. Dumpling special was not available unfortunately. Satay sticks were good with an excellent satay sauce. Golden bags were very crunchy and good enough.
Stir fry crispy Pork belly with soy and greens was clean and almost tangy. Pork was a little dry but crispy crackling and generous serve. Chicken Pad Grapow was excellent with lots of vegies and good basil flavour. Massaman Beef Curry was excellent with tender beef and intense flavour.
Service was friendly, waitresses were always present and helpful despite being busy. The place empited out around 8.30pm.
Perfect for dinner with friends, families or a meal with that "special someone in your life" :)
Definitely worth a visit.
Looking for something different on a saturday night.. The review show this shop not bad.. when we arrived we have doubts because of the frontage of the shop.. But we decide to have a try.. is fully booked but they able to squeeze us in for 1 hr slot... Turn out to be a fantastic dinner outing. .. Food presentation is good.. Taste is good.. Service is Good..
P/s: Please make your reservation before you come..
Food was excellent, best Pad Thai I have ever had. Friendly staff and great service for such a busy place. Great desert black rice pudding.Plenty of parking at the rear.
Rather crowded and seems to be a popular place among the locals
Menus is rather comprehensive and flavours were plenty. Had soft-shell crab, lemongrass barramundi, A curry dish and pork belly. Barramundi was very well done compared to the rest.
The dessert were truly the highlight, had their sticky rice and banana cake- both were very yum and I'd return just for the desserts....
It is a little bit pricy, and the waitresses doesn't seem to be very efficient and actually got our order wrong couple times that evening...
UPDATE 17/10/2016
Monday night dinner, restaurant was busy, testament to their good reputation.
What went right, Crispy Pork Belly, what a sauce .... why so little Pork?
Sadly, a few things went wrong .... Smaller serve/portion
Coconut rice $3.50 per serve, it was overcooked, happy to pay but make sure it's right.
Massaman Beef curry was just okay.
Overcharged us on the corkage.
Trust you can keep up those delicious dishes upgraded.
Another great Thai suburbia restaurant .... 4*
Plenty of parking, just watch-out for that 1/2 hr parking spots courtesy of Manningham City Council.
Very pleasant ambiance, things have change since their opened, simple, black & gold/dark interior. With two waitresses on the floor, it can be slow, but great service
Foodwise, never fails to deliver, Pad Thai, Green Curry and especially seasonal special, Crispy Pork Stir Fry, cooked well and the sauce, magnificent.
A small note to the Chef, must enhance that Massaman Beef Curry, beef is chunky cubed perfectly, pack more punches (spices) please.
Khop khun krap.
This delightful little restaurant is located among a handful of shops and cafes on Blackburn road. Fondly reserved as one of my favourite local Thai spots, Som Thai offers a tranquil, intimate space. The food never disappoints, either dine-in or takeaway! Always fresh and perfectly seasoned and at a great price, too. We ordered the tofu green curry, pad Thai, spring rolls, coconut rice and roti with satay sauce. Our banquet was delicious, superb even! And it was inhaled within a few minutes. Thank you Som Thai - see you again soon!
ATMOSPHERE:
Som Thai – the Asian jewel of Donny! This delightful little restaurant is located among a handful of shops and cafes on Blackburn road. Fondly reserved as one of my favourite local Thai spots, Som Thai offers a tranquil, intimate space with dim lighting, dark timber furnishings and a deep plum colour theme. The soft background music and accommodating seating arrangements are fitting for almost any occasion, from a romantic date to dining with a group of friends.
SERVICE:
Upon arrival, we were greeted with warm smiles and attentive service. Food was placed on our table within minutes and the staff checked in on us every so often to ensure we were enjoying our dining experience – well aren’t you all just precious peacocks!
FOOD:
We ordered the Thai Curry Puffs ($8.50), the Green Chicken Curry ($17.90) with basil and mixed vegetables and the Yellow Seafood Curry ($19.90). The curry puffs comprised of delicate, crunchy pastry pouches filled with minced chicken, onion, carrot and potato. Both of the curries were fragrant and creamy cooked in the key ingredient of luscious coconut milk. The green curry was slightly milder and the aromatic basil added a fresh hit of flavour. The yellow curry was quite spicy and pinched the back of your throat – definitely not for the faint hearted! Nonetheless, it was divine and actually my favourite out of the two dishes. We thoroughly enjoyed eating these authentic Thai dishes, complemented with a side of coconut rice and a glass of pinot noir – perfection!
After my first time at Som Thai I can definitely say I will be back. The staff were friendly, the restaurant was clean and well set up, and the food was spot on. I shared a Yellow Seafood Curry, Thai Green Chicken Curry and Thai Curry Puffs, all of which were full of flavour and left me wanting more. We ate these with some coconut rice and a nice glass of wine. The experience at Som Thai was very pleasant and I can't wait to go back to try more of their curries as they really stood out for me.
Been here twice now and it's fabulous!
Love the decor and atmosphere, romantic and comfortable. The food is wonderful, my favourite being the soft shell crab.. Would HIGHLY recommend ordering this even though it's 9.90$ for two small crabs. All the dishes I've had are lovely with lots of flavour and decent serves (for the mains at least). The service is good, staff are attentive!
Will definitely be returning!
Great little Thai restaurant located in the east. Service is great and the restaurant is very clean and has a very authentic Thai ambience to it. Food was delicious and portions are quite decent sized. Price is ok but I have had Thai food of equal standard for a lot less. Be sure to try the red curry with duck.
Probably one of the better Thai restaurants in this area. Usually we order takeaway, but really, the food tastes so much better dining in. Ordered the Thai curry puffs this time. They were tiny. Wish they were just a bit bigger. The green Thai curry was good too. Full of flavour and the chicken was oh-so-soft! The pad grapow seafood wasn't as good as before (maybe cos there wasn't much basil?), and the calamari were too chewy and tough. Would still come back to Som Thai cos the other dishes have always been quite yummy.

One of my favourite thai restaurants in Melbourne. Authentic thai flavours coming from the dishes. I personally love the fish cakes, duck curry, green chicken curry, and pandan chicken. Service was charming. Although, the decor needs some improvement.
Decor is lovely in this busy vibrant restaurant. We ate here on a busy night, service was a little slow, we ended up using the water glasses when the wine glasses never showed. Food was very different to our usual Thai restaurant, I ordered the Osso Bucco Massaman only because I have never seen this combination, it was more like a satay but still really nice.
Excellent Food, Excellent Service, and Great Ambiance!
This place has a nice variety in its menu options and staff that has knowledge about the cuisine and happy to recommend dishes.
Love your Larb Gai and Thai Red Curry- Very authentic
Will be back again for sure!
Had a girls dinner it was fantastic, service, food and price. We are going back there again in a few weeks time. I had Pat Thai again from there tonight.
Great food at Som Thai! Reliable, good quality and decent portions. Gotten takeaway there a few times in the last couple of weeks and will definately be back!
Amazing food with great service. Went for dinner and absolutely love it!!
came before the new menu and since they changed the menu, the flavor is much more in depth. enjoyed all my meals.
will definitely go back!!
Fantastic barramundi. Went to Som Thai after reading the reviews here. Tried the fried barramundi with tamarind and lemongrass - fantastic!
The pandan chicken is also a must. No problem with the service.
This place has amazing food and great staff! I witnessed a very hostile (unfounded) patron and the staff dealt with her with such grace. apart from this, I have never enjoyed thai food in Melbourne as much as this restaurant. I encourage you all to try.
Nice. Not sure what others have said, but I've had yellow chicken curry and pad Thai here and they where both delicious, especially the yellow chicken curry (it was to die for)!!
A perfect balance!. Som Thai never disappoints; the flavours of every dish I've tried there have been delicately balanced to compliment one another. The papaya salad beamed with freshness, the beef in the Yum beef salad was so tender it melted, I savoured the crispiness of the pork belly and the Red curry prawns was the final straw in sending me into a food coma. Will surely return to try more of the vast menu selection available!
Girls night out dinner..
tried a mixture of entres, 2 mains and rice and rice dessert
all yummy. thought the tables a wee bit too close and it was noisy.
overall food was good and service ok.
pleasant atmosphere
Great flavours but a bit expensive?. All the tastes in this restaurant are amazing. I used to come here all the time for a cheap eat.
However, they changed the menu rather recently, and the prices are rather absurd now. Like.. $12 for 4 dumplings. They taste great - but Im not sure they are worth it for the price?
I would still suggest it to people, as the tastes are beautiful and the service is good. But the prices are just far too inflated for what you get (and Im not someone who is scared of paying a bit extra for a good meal!)
Thumbs up. Tried the Pandan Chicken and Chicken Larb: very reasonably priced and full of flavour.
Love love love the food! Love the fact such an amazing restaurant is so close to home! Would definitely recommend this place
Awesome foods and fast service.
Organized a girls night. thought the banquet was too expansive, we ended ordering a dish each n shared out, and still came under $30 with corkage each!
Our favourite was the chilli prawn n fried barramundi! Pad Thai was really yummy too :) xx
I've been coming to this Thai place for years and I have yet to come across one that is better than Som Thai. The food is delicious and amazing. Would recommend trying the curry puffs and green curry.
Quality Modern Thai Food. Delicious Thai food, cooked with quality fresh ingredients and not watered down for the western palate. The chef used to work at a high end Thai hotel (I think the Banyan Tree?) so you can see the quality in the food and presentation. We particularly like their green curry and their hot beef , made with yearling beef. But do be aware that it is modern Thai food (still delicious)
In fact, for the price you pay, I think it's a steel as you get an ex-superchef cooking for you but you don't have to pay an arm and a leg. There is also a cafe in Heidelberg that makes the best pasta dishes (as the chef used to work at somewhere like the Sheraton. I guess all of us like to have a simpler life don't we....)
Been to the restaurant last a couple of years. Enjoyed food and the atmosphere provided. Like to bring friends along.
This place is amazing~~~ the food is fantastic~~~~ I like seafood, pork dishes~~
Went there earlier in the week for dinner. Amazing food! Service a bit late on one of our dishes, but lovely staff
Fabulous!. This is place is amazing! Would have to be one of the best Thai places in Melbourne. we eat Thai food regularly and have tried many different Thai restaurants all over Melbourne and this is definately one of my favorites. Food is authentic and the staff and service is very good. Highly Recommended.
Everytime I visit Som I am greeted straight away with a smile. The service and food is fabulous, I love going there I always know what I'm getting. Try it!
Delicious Thai curry and chicken stir fry. Price a little on the high side for the portion served but all in all great neighbourhood gem. Will return to try the other dishes like their pad Thai and fried rice. They have a good selection of alcohol as well
Best Thai restaurant in town. Beautiful flavours, great dishes, fresh ingredients, friendly service overall P.E.R.F.E.C.T! Strongly recommend for your occasion or special dinner👍🏻
Have had various dishes from their Menu for many years and am still enjoying them. Both dine in and takeaway. Especially their Tamarind deep fried fish and Spicy lamb. Awesome!
It was a great midweek dinner with the family. Highlight was the crispy pork belly with apple slaw. It was full of flavours and nice serving portion. The king prawns were deep fried on the spot. Very juicy and tender. The beef masaman curry was a bit too sweet for my taste and the same can be said to the pad Thai noodle too. Would be better to tune down the sugar level a notch. Service was attentive and friendly. We didn't have to wait long to get our dishes too. Good job!
Enjoyable and charmingly presented Thai food offering a seasonal menu option. Well priced and friendly service. BYO wine.
It was the best Thai food I've ever had!!!
I'm so happy to know this place😍
Authentic Thai dishes. Favourites include masaman beef curry, pad thai, chicken satay, tom yum soup, pad gra prow, and ... it's all good - share a selection to enjoy as much as you can! The staff are friendly and attentive.
Noted on the most recent visit that the standard of food has slipped a little. May be a change in kitchen staff; I don't know.
It remains the best option for Thai in the area.
Hopefully the quality returns (to the previously excellent standard) when we next visit and I can update this rating to 5 stars again.
This Thai restaurant is awesome. Everything is fantastic!!!
