I came here with some friends for dinner over the weekend. We ordered the salted fish fried rice, the sambal spinach, the sizzling plate beef, sizzling plate egg tofu and the curry fish head. The salted fish fried rice was delicious and fried well. The taste of the saltwd fish was subtle. The sizzling plate beef was sliced thinly and was tender but a little too sweet. The curry fishhead didn’t have much meat in it but there was lots of veggies and the curry was tasty and coconutty. The sambal spinach was well-balanced. The sizzling plate egg tofu was my favourite. The tofu was soft and I loved that it was lying in a bed of egg. So delicious! Will be back to try more dishes next time!
We stumbled across this place when the restaurant we originally wanted to dine at turned out to be closed for renovations. Despite being a cold, rainy Wednesday this place was buzzing.
We ordered the seafood laksa, pad thai and roti with peanut sauce. The laksa was absolutely delicious, and the roti was very nice. The pad thai was below average in taste and the noodles were a little undercooked. Service was very quick and friendly. The food portions were very generous - we entered starving and left super full! Overall we’re happy we found this place and we’ll be coming back again.
Would definitely recommend the fish head laksa or fish soup noodles or anybody who likes this traditional dish. Lots of meaty pieces and strong broth! You really know it’s a great local eat with all the locals swarming this place on weekends! Come at lunch for the lunch menu which comes with complimentary drink such as teh tarik!
The Hokkien Char is delicious and has the authentic taste! The bak kut teh could be better with heavier herbs. Overall the food are above average compared to similar joint.
Delicious Malaysian food. Have been here probably 10-20 times and will keep coming back. Highly recommend the roti, spicy calamari and beef rendang. Such hearty and delicious food, always tastes great and service is always attentive and friendly. Thank you MK for being so good!!!
Great meal with my family, good for everyone. Love their fish head vermicilli and Curry fish head noodle. My hubby thinks all of their food are of decent quality but the roast chicken rice.. Is so-so. Lunch sets will set u back around $13 to $15,with a nice drink. I will be back. :)
Amazing food! I especially recommend their Char Kway Teow! They also offer a great lunch special where you all receive a free drink with your meal and their lemon tea is delicious 😋
This is a very popular family style Malaysian restaurant with a large menu. The style is relaxed and simple but the food is often complex and always well prepared. It is very affordable and the service is polite and fast.
Situated next to a crazy busy pizza shop in Doncaster East, Malaysian Kitchen is an evergreen restaurant serving up fantastic large servings of hawker fare at reasonable prices. The service is always warm and friendly. Tonight, our order came out at lightning speed even though they were super busy....well done guys! Best dish of the night was the hokkien char - surprisingly authentic. Their char kuey teow could not beat the one from Penang Flavours but it's not too far off from the mark. Tom yum noodle was yum but the curry fish head noodle was a mild let down - the broth was great but the fish head pieces were too bony. Having said all that though, this place is da bom and the proof is in the number of people who flock here every weekend.
Been to Malaysian Kitchen several times, every time when I was there, the place was packed with hungry customers. You would definitely notice, on each table, there was at least one bowl of fish head soup! Yeah, you have to try it! The lunch meal is a good deal which includes one main dish and one drink for cheaper price.
You can pick different soup base for your fish head soup, but personally I recommend the curry laksa soup base. It was thick, creamy and full of flavours, perfectly to have with the deep-fried fish head.
I also recommend the #squid with tamarind sauce# as well as the #lohbak#-crispy chicken meat loaf wrapped with bean curd skin.
Lightly battered whole squid was deep fried then coated with plenty sweet and spicy tamarind sauce. It tasted really tender and really good!
In my opinion, Malaysian kitchen served the best fish head laksa. Affordable price, and delicious bowl of creamy and flavour soup can fix anything...
Quick and friendly service.
Authentic Malaysian food that’s been around for years. I do find their food can be a bit bland at times but they are always dependable - you won’t get major quality issues here.
The place can get very hot during summer- not an issue now.
great food, restaurant is always busy which is a great sign. food was full of flavour and will be back to try some other options on the menu
We ordered stay and Fish Head laksa. Satay not recommended!! But very big portion of the Fish head laksa!! I tried few Malaysian restaurant. This is the best I like.
Service was good but pack during lunchtime, be prepared to queue . Nasi Lemak is ok, the ikan bilis was soft, would have preferred it to be crispy. The roti was abit tough and chewy. Prawn noodles were good (it's the spicy version ).
Good alternative, rather than travelling to Glen Waverley !
very welcoming staff. Quite busy at lunch but we got a table within 3 minutes. Prices are very reasonable and portions are generous. The prawn soup noodles is really good and authentic. I will definitely return and recommend Malaysian Kitchen to people who would like to try or have Malay food. Yum!!! Must try their homemade ice lemon tea as well.
You want a good pizza, go couple doors to the right.
For one of the better Malaysian joints, this is great. Explains why it is always busy, especially at lunch. Service is efficient, helps their turnover.
No one should go past the Fish Head Noodles. Lunch specials include a drink - makes this place even more enticing.
Finally made my way to Malaysian Kitchen after having it book marked for about a year and it did not disappoint! I had the Char Kway Teo and it was one of the best I've had - the serving was very generous (had enough for lunch the next day too)
The roti bread was also delicious crispy and fluffy.
Apart from initially sending us the wrong food the service was fantastic - the staff were so friendly and kindly checked in with us every now and again
The menu is extensive and reasonably priced - definitely give this place a go there's something for everyone!
Had lunch here the other day, only $13.50 for a meal with a drink. Had the homemade lemon tea drink which was refreshing. Ordered two meals for 2 adults and a young toddler, we couldn't finish it all as they were more than enough! Meals were delicious - can't remember exactly what they were called but the hor fun dish was yummy.
Family favourite, and it never disappoints (probably because all 8 of us pretty much always order the same thing)
Tom yum fish head/ tom yum noodles and the calamari are amazing, and decently priced too.
One of my favourite places in Doncaster - it's a mellow version of Malaysian food, great staff and vibe. I can never skip the green curry chicken, nyonya sizzling beef and fish head noodle soup. Love this place!
Towards end of the week, the bulk of food in my fridge would slowly diminish, resulting in less options to choose from by then. When this happens, the thought of dining out can be rather appealing seeing as it also gives us an opportunity to hit the supermarkets and replenish our food supply. Oh what excuses we humans come up with - really, I just want to treat myself after a week at work. And I usually crave for good ol' Malaysian food whenever this happens. Drove up to Doncaster again!
This is my 4th or 5th time here. I have never been disappointed. It has been 12mths since I was here last. The Malaysian duck was excellent and as good as I have ever eaten. The Lamb curry was superb. We will be back again.
A friend brought me here and bragged about how great their fish head noodle was.. we also ordered char Siew curry laksa, Ipoh hor fan and Nasi Lemak w lamb curry. Their highlight was actually the rich and flavoursome curry aksa, and the rest was ok. I still prefer Nasi lemak at Mamak CBD, and Straits Cafe at Wantirna for Hor fan and fish head noodle. Great value for lunch though.. $13.50 plus a drink. Will be back to try other dishes.
This restaurant is situated on the main road (Doncaster Road), don't be concerned about the tacky fairy lights decorating the front. The place is old looking but the service and the food are good. The chicken curry laksa is flavoursome and comparable to Laska King in Kensington (which is a big call). The Char Kway Teow is wokky and serving size is generous - not very spicy at all - I would have preferred a little more kick. The Hokkien Char is also nice, moist, not overly flavoursome/salty however it could have a bit more seafood/veggies. Overall, a reasonably nice Malaysian meal and would recommend.
Food: Definitely recommend coming here for lunch rather than dinner. Excellent lunch menu that comes with a complimentary drink (we always get cappuccino or lemon iced tea). Good value for money and generous portions.
They have the best curry laksa I have tasted yet in Melbourne, always fresh and beautifully rich without being too heavy, though some may find it not spicy enough. The char siu pork that comes with it is amazing, better than any you can buy at Chinese restaurants .
Other recommendations: the ever popular fish head noodle soup, chicken & salted fish vermicelli noodles, beef nasi lemak.
Service: Not particularly friendly but not impolite either. Pretty standard service for Asian restaurants, so it doesn't bother me.
Ambience: Spacious areas on two floors. It can get a bit cold sitting near the door during winter.
Came here for a quick bite after some intensive car shopping! One of the few places you can stuff your face at 3.30pm on a weekend for a very late lunch! Tried the BBQ pork laksa which was good, and is probably one of the better places in Melbourne for laksa.
I have been here for a few years and I always enjoy their fish head noodles. Lovely noodles. One of the best fish head noodle restaurant.
This place is always full. I keep coming back to this place for their food is so tasty. The satay chicken is very tasty, it goes very well with the satay sauce. The fried flat noodles is full of flavor, and the signature dish fish head soup noodles is a must try.
Came here with a friend for Saturday lunch. I have been coming here for years and have been mostly satisfied by their food, drinks and service. Food is hit and miss - some of their dishes are delicious, others are below average. Drinks are good most of the time, but sometimes are also below average. Today the iced teh tarek was diluted and almost flavorless. Lunch menu is a dish and a drink for $12.50, so it's better to come here for lunch rather than for dinner. Service is acceptable - servers are not particularly friendly but I have not had any bad experiences here.
What to order:
Laksa - generous portion, soup is perfect combination of laksa and coconut milk, creamy and flavorful. Comes with BBQ pork, beans, tofu and bean sprouts. Would've been great with more bean sprouts and less noodles.
Fish head noodle soup - flavorful, generous portion, one of the best I've had in Melbourne.
Chicken and salted fish fried rice - good portion, not too salty, good balance of chicken, salted fish with rest of the dish.
What not to order:
Prawn Mee - I had this once and it was terrible - soup was flavorless, small portion and it was the worse prawn mee I've ever had.
Hainanese chicken rice - really average for the price, can get better at Wong's Lucky Bar in box hill for $8.
Char Quey Teow - plain and flavorless, tastes just like soy sauce and flat rice noodles.
Overall I would recommend the laksa and fish head noodle soup only - those are the only dishes I come here for!
12/3/16
Came here again today and had another laksa and a cappuccino. Coffee was surprisingly good - a solid 7-8/10 with adequate froth and good flavor, except that they didn't stock skinny milk. However may be hit and miss as I watched the table next to be receive a cappuccino with so little froth it was spilling over and wobbling like crazy.
Pretty awesome Malaysian food! I've always left satisfied. Order the fish head noodle soup, the hainan chicken rice (a must!) and curry! The portions are fat and great for value
Delicious, authentic, well priced and just a short drive away from home! It's like being back in Malaysia. Food portions are generous and there are many different dishes to choose from. The laksa and the kway teow are my favourites. They also offer different types of rice such as coconut and chicken rice. I'm very lucky to have such a gem so close to home.
For lovers of fish head noodle soup this is a must go on your list. Authentic Malaysian good but nothing beats their fish head noodle soup.
Great place for a hearty Malaysian laksa or fish head noodle soup. Love the Malaysian milk tea as well. On weekend they do lunch special - a main dish with a drink for around $12.5. Friendly staff provide good table service. Always busy on weekend so booking is recommended.
Have eaten there, and taken away. Eating there was great. Really friendly staff, and when we'd chosen something from the menu that was similar to another item, it was pointed out (he was right), and we ended up having a great meal.
Take-away is fast, and consistently good. I judge a malaysian restaurant on three meals, Roti Chennai, Char Keoy Teow, and Hokkien Mee. I've never gotten past the Roti Chennai. It's a knock-out.
No reason to want to go to other similar types of places when you find one as good as that.
On this occasion, I tried their special lunch menu which had several of their popular noodle and rice dishes to select from in addition to free drink for $12.50. I was very happy with my choice of Chef Pan Mee. I have never had this noodle dish before and was surprised by the thick cut noodles that came with it. They were a slippery but nice texture and the broth was flavoursome without being too salty. It had little bits of fried anchovies and pork throughout.

Great value. Awesome lunch specials, especially that fish head soup - you get more than what you pay for.
Simplicity and consistently good. Is the recipe for returning patrons ....
hence the many returns here, simple fare like Fish Head Curry, Cah Kwee Tiaw, etc.
Not bad. The barbecue pork curry laksa was so good that we went back again the next day. However, the nasi lemak was bland bland bland. My partner also agreed it was tasteless. Reasonable prices and reasonable portions. I'd only come here though if my preferred malaysian restaurant was closed. Service wasn't extremely friendly but they were able to fulfil all our requests which is what counts.
The Tom Yum Fish Head Noodles Soup is the best of soup noodles in Melbourne. mush try. I can eat that three times a week. I also love their sizzling tofu too.
Staff were attentive, we ordered entrees and mains and all came out in a reasonable time, and everything was delicious!!! Will be back :)
Hit and misses. Generally yummy but some dishes aren't that great compared to other Malaysian places out there at the moment. It is cheap and cheerful and their Malaysian drinks are authentic. The Tom Yum Fish head noodle soup is a family favourite and my dad actually is happy to order it as his dish EVERY single time and has eaten this dish three times in one week. Waitresses are generally friendly but they have on a few occasions done that annoying thing where they pretend they can't see you.
Love the package deal. We've been coming to this joint for lunch on Sundays lately. It reminded us of the old Coliseum cafe in KL. The food is decent but I particularly appreciate the package deal of a lunch special order with a glass of wine at $13.80. The glass is unbelievably generous (far more than your standard drink volume) and with a plate of tong fun (mung bean noodle) stir fried with seafood combo, I'm happy. If an early arvo grog is unpalatable, you can have a coffee/tea option for $12 instead. Still a decent deal...
Have been here >3 times now jn last 2 months. bit inconsistent. must b catching the chef in bad mood. The Japanese tofu tonight was not as good as last time... grrrrrr... the kang kung balachan nvr fails though! sooo goooood. Just the right balance between saltiness, chilli and balachan of course.
Great food - big servings - feels like Malaysia - love it!
Pleasant Food. Went for dinner with the girls and chose MK because it's probably the few asian restaurants in Doncaster where we'll be able to chat and enjoy the company as well as the food. We had beef with crispy noodles, sizzling beef (beef on hot plate) and crispy skin chicken.
The food is great and suits my dining companion's palate and we agreed the crispy skin chicken is really delicious. The skin was crispy but not oily, and the meat underneath is moist, tender and fragrant with aroma from five spice.
I found out later that a friend of mine also loves the laksa here. I'm not a big laksa fan but I always try it whenever someone recommended laksa in a malaysian restaurant. My opinion: the laksa here has creamier broth than some other laksa I've had, so the spices and broth practically clings to the noodles as you bring them to your mouth. It is also less oily compared to others. This is not how laksa is, generally. The creamier texture also means most of the flavours are muted, depending on the coconut-y broth to deliver the flavours. If you're a fan of this kind of laksa, give this place a try. The ice kachang is massive (although mostly shaved ice creating the illusion), so I would recommend sharing (would be beautiful in summer).
I have been back twice now, I had nasi lemak the second visit. Portion is smaller than crispy skin chicken (half a chicken) and not the best nasi lemak I've had, but pretty good anyway. I think the food here is suitable for those who aren't very familiar with malaysian food, but has no issue handling spices because the flavours are quite delicate. Will visit again sometime soon.
Service is minimal, but we got everything we ordered and food came within 15 minutes. They checked our table 5 minutes after the food was served, then left us alone (which we liked).
Hearty portions. Every dish was beautifully cooked. I was especially impressed with the salted egg mushroom. Fish Head Curry was rich and creamy. Elegant setting and a great place for family gatherings.
Listed top Laska place in my booklet now, aroma appears on every single element of Jumbo bowel.
Meal has been Quickly served, and service was nice.
Plenty parking spots behind the building, and easy access..
Will come back to Jumbo Laska and curry fish soup next time.
Came here for my friend son's birthday party for lunch. Very spacious and great for larger group size.
What a great meal!! Great portion, and absolutely delicious broth soupy stuff!! I had the jumbo laksa, and I will be back for that again!!
I took my team out for a celebratory dinner at the end of financial year. We were a group of 12 and the dishes we ordered were enjoyed by all.
Our waiter was patient and understood the special needs of our group as we had 3 hearing impaired people in our team.
Thanks you for helping us with our celebration.
