Had an awesome night :-) Our chef was John who was amazing!! We laughed throughout the meal and were thoroughly entertained. The food was great and the staff friendly and attentive. I would highly recommend this unique dining experience...it is one I will always remember.
Celebrated my birthday last night and the food was superb. We arrived late and had to wait for the rest of my family to arrive as they were running late and the staff was so patient. At last, my family arrived after 9pm when the kitchen closed. The staff really looked after us. They were friendly and The chef was fun and really entertained us. We had a blast. The food and the flavors were to die for. We left feeling very satisfied. Thank you!!
We will be back.
This is our second time to Yamagata Teppanyaki. Both times were fantastic. We had Chef John and he entertained us throughout the night. He's very funny and I was laughing so much I had to wipe tears from my eyes. The food was delicious and the wait staff were very prompt and friendly. I would recommend highly Yamagata Teppanyaki.
The food here is really good.l love it when the food is freshly made. And the hot sake.you must try.friendly staff. Definitely i will come again.

We've been to Ichiban a number of times, and have always enjoyed the food, the helpful and friendly staff and wide selection from the menu. One of my fav restaurants! Worth a try :)
The all-you-can-eat buffet is value for money! The menu had a vast array of mouth watering Japanese favourites, all made to authentic flavours.
The sashimi was fresh and juicy, the sushi was nicely portioned and was a firm favourite with the kids. Service was quick and staff were friendly and attentive. Highly recommended!
Lovely food. Wonderful and very accommodating staff. Checked food was suitable or adapted for my vegan diet. Had a really pleasant evening.
Certainly the best Japanese Restaurant I've ever been to. Amazing out-of-this-world service. Extremely entertaining Teppanyaki experience with Melbourne's top chefs. A great place to make memories. Must-try Teppanyaki scallops. Looking forward to our next visit. Highly recommending to everyone.

As always we enjoyed a fabulous Teppanyaki experience celebrating with my family for my Sister In Laws Birthday. Loved the fabulous service and yummy food Tokyo set prepared beautifully by John our Teppanyaki Chef and also loved our fun laughter filled toss and catch with him..I highly recommend Yamagata Teppanyaki Japanese Restaurant and will definitely be back !! Arigato !!
Was there tonight to celebrate our 30yrs anniversary in Australia... as a whole family, we loved the food.. variety in menu.. the portions are just right for you to try everything on the menu. Great service !
Had a great night last night with a large group for birthday celebrations. The food was fantastic, service was great and the atmosphere was awesome. Would definitely go back again.
Great Japanese dinner buffet. Good food that comes out pretty quickly and lovely efficient staff. Highly recommended!
Quality of the food is excellent, especially the sashimi and sushi. Kids loved the fried octopus and tempura. Minimal wait time between ordering and the food arriving. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

201908 highly recommend chef David if you are itching to go to teppanyaki. He cooks well and listens even better being able to do both in tandem and keeping up with all questions and jokes. Discovered through groupon and still available there!
Highly recommend this place , just had a wonderful experience! Love the food and the mini interactive games with the chef in between.
service is really good!!
One of the best Teppanyaki restaurants I have ever been to. We took seven teenagers for our son's birthday and they were so well entertained and fed. Use of sauces, herbs and spices made this a cut above other Teppanyaki restaurants. Thankyou to the owner, staff and very entertaining chefs for a memorable evening.
This place has the amazing fun vibe that you want in a Teppanyaki restaurant. The atmosphere as soon as you walk in is full of bowls flying through the air, flames shooting a metre off the grill, people laughing as food is thrown at them left right and centre. The knife skills of the chef are the best I have seen in any Teppanyaki restaurant. He was very fast, entertaining and precise with all his actions. He was very funny, flamboyant and entertaining.
The food was delicious. The only issue was the chicken thighs could have been trimmed a little better as I got 3 pieces with large pieces of gristle in it. The steak, prawns and scallops were cooked to perfection. I recommend bringing your own wine as the wine available by the glass was mediocre. At $10 corkage I thought it would be worth it. I like how they had the traditional rice green tea offered at the end. I really missed though having a nice green tea\black sesame ice cream at the end as only vanilla was offered which didn’t feel as Japanese. Overall would definitely come back again.
Wheelchair accessible. Spacious bathrooms but no accessible facilities
We came for Teppanyaki and the tables were well spaced out for the wheelchair to get through. We had booked beforehand and advised them of the chair.
We ordered a meat lovers banquet and a vegetarian banquet that was able to be modified to be vegan.
Very accomadating staff and a great show to watch.
Unfortunately we came on a 40degree day... Just take note that it gets quite hot inside because of the grills. Perfect for the cold blooded!!
Came here for a friend’s birthday. Great atmosphere and freshest food with an awesome chef cooking in front of you. Salmon was incredibly fresh and tasty. Highlight was the wagyu beef and their special sauce. So so so obsessed with the beef there. A very enjoyable experience. Definitely will back again.
We were there to celebrate my wife birthday with another close friends. We ordered seafood with lobster and top graded wagyu need set. Fantastic food especially the salmon fish and the wagyu beef. Not to mention the entertainment part as one of the top quality enjoyment in Melbourne. Definitely will go back again with a bigger group of ppl as the place is too fun, too entertaining and top quality food served.
We were a group of 12 out for a be early Mother day dinner and the restaurant was really busy. I think everyone had the same idea to celebrate be early mother day. We waited for about 40 minutes for our chef to cook for us. while waiting we were served appetiser, salad, entree and finally with a hot bowl of miso soup. The chef we had was really entertaining, and we got to have some fun with our food. We had to catch the eggs with our mouth. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves here!
Great service from the moment you walking in very family welcoming. Amazing food great chefs no matter which chef you get they are all good and attentive severs. Highly recommend!!!!!
No doubt, the quality of the sashimi is amazing. The all you can eat is really value for your money. I’d avoid the japanese pancake. Recommended if you’d like to have conversations and catch up while waiting for your food.
The first time, I went with my partner’s family for a birthday dinner and it was not too bad. Had to wait for abit for the orders to come through but it was worth the wait. Full house! (Sat Night).
Decided to come back a few weeks later on a Sunday Night with friends. Wasn’t sure if they were short staffed but we waited for our orders for awhile... and we had to wait quite awhile for the staff to take our orders. Nonetheless, food is good. Anyway - what was disappointing is the one dish we ordered from the very first round of ordering and staff saying they’ll remind the kitchen at least 4 times, never came even after we finished our dinner. Had to wait for 10 minutes to get a simple serving of wasabi/pickled ginger. I was really going to go help myself to it. Be reminded that there were only 4 tables occupied (otherwise the restaurant was empty). It was a very quiet night. Even staff were quiet. Couldn’t find anyone when we needed something. There are still rewarding points; one being that their staffs are really well mannered and when they do attend to you/serve you, it’s quality service. The other is the quality of the food. I’d still come back again despite its shortcomings!
Our party of 12 had an enjoyable night. It's probably a place you would go with kids, Our kids were 6, 9, 10 and had a great time. Food was very good and plenty of if. Chef was good fun, kids were mesmerized by the food and eggs and fried rice throwing. well worth the price to a try for a special occasion.
My friends took me to Ichiban Japanese Restaurant for my surprise birthday meal and we had a great time. Food is fantastic and loved the whole table cooking experience
Staff were good, very polite and food came out quickly. Meals were all perfectly sized and all tastes great. Do recommend and will more Han likely return.
One of the best food and customer service experiences I have had for a long time.
We had the all you can eat and the food was high quality, not like many other all you can eat venues.
Highly recommended this place and will come back
Went for dinner with my family. Good size and portion for mains. Good food and service. Wait time was not too long after the first round of food. Will be back another time.
We had lunch here today and the all-you-can-eat buffet is value for money! The menu had a vast array of mouth watering Japanese favourites, all made to authentic flavours.
The sashimi was fresh and juicy, the sushi was nicely portioned and was a firm favourite with the kids. Other must-try items would be the Chawanmushi (very smooth!), the Salmon Nigiri (generous portions), the Fukuda Taiyaki (fish shaped pancake with a red bean filling that’s just right and not overly sweet) and not forgetting the black sesame ice-cream (it hit the right notes and was a fresh change from the usual common flavours). Service was quick and staff were friendly and attentive, overall a very pleasant and rewarding dining experience. My only regret is not having enough tummy space to try everything on the menu!
We were there when they first opened and then again recently, and it has improved in food taste and service. Great value and friendly staff. Will be back again.
Just got back from 4pax Sunday family AYCE buffet dinner. What can I say, for Okami regulars like us - Wantirna 3 times (my son 5 times), Camberwell once, Ichiban takes the cake hands down! Tonite we had 8 servings of Sashimi, was that good! Love the mushroom soup, Octopus Karaage, Teriyakai steak. Kids enjoyed the Agedashi Tofu & Unagi. For Dessert, the red bean ice cream stands out. The rest are simply too filling, by the time you've come this far! We all agreed, for a AYCE meal at this price range, we will never go to China Bar Burwood again!
Came here for dinner. Great all you can eat Japanese place. The restaurant ended up getting quite busy throughout the night, but the staff were very attentive and polite. Every single dish I ordered came out within a reasonable time. The tempura was nice and crispy,. The soups were lovely, the sushi was great especially the sashimi and nigiri, and the black sesame ice cream is so good!
Went with my mom. Great food and value. Friendly staff. Good variety with plenty of options, enjoyed the gyoza best! Salmon was lovely too. Will come back again.
Had the all you can eat which was a fantastic price as the food was delicious. Wait time was not long for the dishes and the service was attentive and very friendly. Can't wait for the next time to go back.
Amazing value for money!! Good quality steak and salmon specifically. We come all the way from Coburg for Ichaban. The service is really nice - ask for Deb!
Unlimited sushi and Japanese food for $35, crazy value and crazy good food, the Takoyaki balls were amazing. Food also came out pretty quickly. Unlike most unlimmited sushi places you could get so much more than sushi, for those who aren't the fan of something that raw.
Had the Teppanyaki last Saturday and the food was deliciously cooked and fresh. Large scallops. The Teppanyaki chef was good, entertaining and interactive. And the 'All You Can Eat' last Thursday, good variety of dishes and the food was great. Compliments to the chefs. The staffs did a good job. Will definitely come again.
Had a great time last night with friends, fresh and tasty food and attentive service. Will be going again next month with another group of friends!
Had dinner with family and friends last weekend. Food was scrumptious and best of all, everyone had a jolly good time. It was so fun, will definitely be back! 👍👍👍
Update:
24/8 Had AYCE dinner at Ichiban with family. Food was SO Good! Spread was good and absolutely loved the Nasu dengaku, Tako Karaage, Salt chilli tempura Ika, Sashimi; kids loved the Chawan mushi and (surprise, surprise) Tobiko salad 😄. Food was out in a constant flow, no hiccups. Had a great time, will definitely be back!! 👍ICHIBAN👍
The staff was wonderful after I had messed up our booking by a month. They made every effort to give our group of 12 a seat around the teppanyaki grill as quickly as possible. The dinner and show of teppanyaki eating was delicious and fun with fresh ingredients used and engaging chefs. Thank you for a wonderful night and looking after us so well.
🇯🇵 Great food 🇯🇵
👍🏽👍🏽great experience & very entertaining great to come with big groups of people you will have a laugh 👨👩👧👦
Thumbs up for David the chef 👨🍳
Teppanyaki is so much fun! If you want a good place to have a quiet chat for dinner, come here on a weekday. The staff can give you their full attention and you can concentrate on catching food in mid-air.
Sushi and sashimi taste fresh and delicate.
Had really much fun with the chef ,very entertaining ! really good and nice food (We ordered a Waygu set ) so full and yum , staff did really good services and nice ! They made me really enjoy my first experience in teppenyaki , I will be back soon !!!
I booked a Table for a staff party. I have to say they have amazing customer service. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Very fast to give you best service possible. The food is amazing I was very satisfied. Great menu range. I would highly recommend. Inside is very nice and lots of table service of big groups.I will be returning very soon.
Had dinner there tonight was fantastic. Food was amazing. Service was even better very friendly and attentive. The chef was so good keep us laughing all night.
Our party of 8 had an amazing time here last night!
The food was really nice and our chef, John, was so entertaining and really made our night!
We will definitely be back and recommending this restaurant
Had my first teppanyaki experience here. I liked the seafood and liked the chef's honesty when he presented and openly said basa fish. I actually quite like basa fish but I think a lot of other people have something against them. Food was yummy, rice could've been more flavoured though. Ended up with egg in my face haha.
Fantastic, fresh food and an entertaining display from the chefs!
Great fun and great food. My husband and I went to Yamagata for the first time last night (a Sunday evening) and had a great time, both because of the food and the entertaining chef. We chose to eat the Teppanyaki and opted for the Tokyo set ($60 p.p). This consisted of an entree (sushi/sashimi or chicken skewers) and then for main course servings of king prawns (2 per person) scallops (2 p.p) and a decent serving of chicken and beef (wagyu I think), followed by stir fried vegies and fried rice. There were several other 'sets' available, eg, meat lovers, seafood and a smaller one for kids. The wait staff made a good impression right from the start, when we asked if we could choose different entrees. My husband had the sushi and sashimi, I had the chicken skewers. I was initially concerned that they wouldn't be flexible, but it was no problem, so it set the scene for a relaxed evening. The entrees came out very quickly, within a few minutes of ordering and were very tasty.
Then our chef Kevin began his entertainment and started grilling our prawns and scallops. Both were heavenly, very fresh and tender. Same for the chicken and beef. Kevin tested our reflexes by throwing bowls at us to catch, but he made it very easy for us to catch them. He also challenged us to catch raw eggs (to be used in the fried rice) and this was easy as well, but I was glad they had given us the paper bibs to wear at the start (just a little bit of egg white landed on our hands). All the chefs were quite impressive and had fantastic knife skills. We ended our meal with a pot of Japanese green tea and were both definitely very full by the end of the night.
So overall, a satisfying meal (although a bit expensive, but then Teppanyaki always is) and a fun night. Despite being quite full, the service was fast and friendly. The one small down side was that the restaurant was quite hot due to the open grills and the airconditioning didn't seem to be working properly. But we will definitely be back and can recommend this restaurant to others.
Highest recommendations. Nice and comfortable environment for a family gathering, food was reasonably good on a sunday night buffet, especially the beef that was grilled to perfection, a sure favourite for my whole family. There is a small wait at times, but for the high quality of food, i absolutely recommend a must try for everyone. The staff must also be commended for their patience, the flawless way they dealt with some unreasonable diners who seems to expect the world at their feet.
A novelty.. Served quickly fresh food in small serves. Beef a little tougher than usual. Nice ambience and fun with food flicked by chef for customers to catch. A bit messy and not that much to eat for $53 buffet but a novelty. Would not be a regular here.
We went mid week, with our 7 year old. It was quiet but it was great for service and quality of food. They were
Particularly great with our daughter, so much fun and good food, we'd happily recommend and go there again.
Not really authentic in the slightest but still pretty good and sound ingredients used .
A good atmosphere and great if your local and feel like Chinese-Style Japanese.
Friday night dinner with family and friends was fantastic. Service and ambience were perfect, food was delicious and the chef very entertaining.
DINNER REVIEW. I went here a couple months ago for teppinyaki for 8 people with a scoopon voucher. We were all impressed by the value for money. Our host for the evening was funny and kept us entertained whilst cooking delicious foods. All 8 of us thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I thought i would be hungry afterwards as you are only eating small portions of food. I was wrong. I was so full by the last few courses I couldn't finish my food. I highly recommend this place especially if you are using the scoopon voucher!!
We enjoyed our teppanyaki on Friday, the service was great the food was even better, they catered for our party needs and the after meeting the chef and the owner I will gladly come back.
Had a great night here. Lovely food and great service. We came on a voucher and found it to be very generous. Would definitely come back.
Always enjoyed the service and the food. Reasonable spread with variety
Went for Teppanyaki and loved it. The Squid and bean shoots Amazing!! Only disappointing part was the prawn legs at the end, burnt and tasted fishy every had a bad taste in their mouth. Service was prompt and polite. And the man preparing the Teppanyaki definetly had a sense of humour
Went here on Saturday night with 7 other friends for my 28th Birthday and every one of us had a fantastic entertaining night. The food was amazing and the service was great. I must say the beef eye fillet was the best I ever had. The chef shows off his knife skills and how fast he his, he also was very funny. Everyone had to catch a bowl of rice and when it was my turn the chef took us all out in the car park and I had to catch the bowl from 10 meters away. It was just a fun dinner and I would definitely go again soon. Thanks to the team at Yamagata.
8 years ago I has been yamagata ! 8 years later, jack surprised me, who is the owner. He still remember me and my name! Also I am surprised that place has been redecoration , it's looks more elegant. All stuff may have change, but the food still good, especially wagyu steak and eel rice! Really like!!
The food was excellent, disappointed that our vegetables were only vegetables though. Chef was very entertaining, did some great tricks. Would recommend, only bad thing was they don't accept eftpos only credit card or cash, causing some issues as we were a young group.
Excellent food and friendly staff. I have been there once and the food was devine and the service is great also the staff were very friendly
Japanese Buffet. Not the best Japanese food, but not bad considering it was buffet with all you can eat sushi and sashimi at $38 per head (Buffet only available Friday and Sunday). Not a traditional smorgasboard type of buffet, you order the amount of pieces you want by marking the check list of food and it is brought out to you fresh. Sometimes when they think you've had enough they won't bring your food out and tell you 'they forgot' when you ask them where your dish is. Not the best in the service area, but not bad either.
OUR FAVOURITE TEPPANYAKI. We considered ourselves as tepanyaki conosiuers before eating at many tepanyaki across melbourne and the world. That was till we found Yamagata 3yrs ago ,
After finding Yamagata we have made it our only stop for japanese tepanyaki in Melbourne.
The service contrary to other reviews is impeccable drinks food is always served without delay and we havent meet a bad staff member yet ,THAT is apart from Yamagata most famous chef Johnny he is an awesome chef lots of fun and if u enjoy a laugh ask for johnny to cook for you . He is a great entertainer and he is the most fun you will have.( need to take your serious hat off though) Food is always good and we have recomended this restraunt to all our freinds whom have also loved the experience.
Do yourself a favour and give TEPANYAKI a go here...
Great night out. I had never been to a Japanese Teppanyaki restaurant, i loved it! Food was expensive but well worth it. Chef was entertaining. Everyone had a great night. If your after a quiet meal Teppanyaki is not for u. If u want a loud exciting night out go to YAMAGATA TEPPANYAKI RESTAURANT!
I have been there for 3 birthdays! It's a fabulous place to relax and be entertained by the chefs!
21st birthday celebration. We went to Yamagata last night for my daughters 21st birthday dinner. We had a great night. Kyle our Teppanyaki chef kept us all entertained by throwing food in our direction and showing his cooking skills. There were young children there who were thoroughly enjoying themselves and my 86 year old mother became skilled with catching bowls of fried rice.
The staff were very friendly and thorough. The price was a little high, but, the food was excellent. Would recomend to everyone -young and old.
Absolutely fantastic experience! Not only was the food delicious but it was a fun evening with the friendly chefs cooking in front of us and playing games. The service was excellent and we were even given a rose at the end of the night to give to our partners on Valentines day. 10/10 would definitely recommend if you are looking for an exciting dining experience!
Had a very enjoyable Teppanyaki birthday dinner. Very few teppanyaki restaurants these days still provide an entertaining chef’s demonstration and games and the restaurant did not disappoint, kids loved the experience and actually enjoyed their food more than usual, with no phones required to keep them entertained during a long very tasty dinner. Don’t let the dated building facade deter you, this place thrives on word of mouth alone. Don’t expect a pompous Nobu-like experience either, the food is fresh, honest and sumptuous. We were very full at the end. Staff were attentive and efficient. Highly recommended if you are after a good night out in the eastern suburbs and don’t want to trek into the city. Will come back.
Great experience at Ichiban. My partner and I got the Onigyu Teppanyaki set with lots of different cuts of meat, miso soup, salad, fried rice and some ice cream for dessert. Our chef was amazing, a bit cheeky with giving some of us some easy catches with the bowls and others needing to sit in a chair on the other side of the room. Lots of egg thrown around. Heaps of fun, can't wait to come back again.
