Very affordable and flavourful Malaysian food. I tried a few different dishes but I found a few of them quite oily for my liking. I also tried the iced cendol which i loved and thought it was worth for $5.5

Over the past few years I’ve been educated and exposed to the wonders and delights of Malaysian cuisine and people. I can’t believe i live so close to Ampang Tofu and haven’t made it a regular staple! I had a nice Teh Tarik to start. The secret to a good teh Tarik (so I’ve been told) is the pour height. Now I wouldn’t call myself a teh Tarik connoisseur but I do have them often. This one was very good. I ordered yong tofu for the first time. It was delicious. The supple flavour of the curry sauce and an extensive list of ingredients to put into it was very generous. My tip is to go there hungry! I was so full after yong tofu! Service was quick and polite. Will definitely go back

😱Lizzie’s first impression: love coming back here even though it’s so far away so I find every chance to come back when I am in the area.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I love everything on their menu - safe to say I’ve tried almost 10 different dishes and they’re all excellent. I love the combination noodles, the laksa which has great flavour and noodles, the Penang curry is also delicious with roti bread.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: they are just a local takeaway restaurant so don’t expect best service but the quality of the food is too hard to miss.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: love this local place and it exceeds al expectations for a local one!

If you plan to visit Ampang tofu, be aware that there’s a minimum card spend of $30. So bring your cash if it’s just the 2 of you

Overall score: 17/25 or ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
in 5 words: Malaysian noodle soup in Doncaster
*
Taste ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - we were served complimentary Chinese tea upon entering. But I travelled all the way to Doncaster for their Yong Tau Foo! Ampang YTF has a wide
selection of fish paste stuffed vegetable / fish balls. It’s easy enough to order - you select based on pictures.

The 6 YTF were huge. Ampang Tofu is generous with fish fillings. my favourites were the okra, fishballs and the fried prawn dumplings. The curry sauce was mildly spicy, not too oily and there was a clear coconut milk addition to it. They gave way too much noodles for me, so I would suggest telling them to scale it down if you have a smaller appetite. I’ve also had the chicken rice here and it was delicious (albeit with less chicken slices than I would have wanted). Chilli sauce was on point. Quite an authentic Malaysian place then!
*
Ambience ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - beautiful asian store design. Great for family gatherings. They even have nappy changing facilities here.
*
Price ⭐️⭐️⭐️- For 6 Yong Tau Foos and a noodle soup of your choice, your meal costs $14. Pricey but very generous servings. If you want dry noodles, there’s an extra $1.
*
Presentation ⭐️⭐️⭐️- standard noodle presentation.
*
Service ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - It is a bit inconvenient that they have a minimum card spend because we don’t usually carry as much cash on us. Hopefully this policy would change. Service was alright and efficient.

Was at this restaurant with my husband having a late lunch around 3.30pm after a flight back from Brisbane. No customers at this time. I ordered a Char Hor Fun mixed with hor fun and meehoon with only seafoods and my husband ordered his yong tau foo which they are famous for. We are regular customers as this restaurant is near our house. My food ordered was perfectly cooked with a char smell which gives a nice flavour. Enjoyed it very much. I even complimented the cook who cooked it when making the payment. Good job, chef. (6 June 2019)

We had lobak as our starter , it was so tasty and crispy. My boyfriend had the hainan chicken rice, their serving is quite generous especially for the rice. It was delicious, especially the soup. But i wish they have an option for chicken breast. I had the bakuteh, full of flavours and the chilli had so much kick in a good way. Would definitely come back to try the rest of the menu

Ordered the yong tofu noodle with curry soup base with a side of plain roti to try, given the price.

The curry base is probably the closest tasting flavour to the curry laksa in Malaysia. While it tasted very authentic and the initial sips are a delight, the flavours dull slightly after a while and suddenly it's not as potent anymore. Nevertheless, a very big thumbs up for the authenticity.

A big bulk of the yong tofu options offered cover a lot of the same items that would be available in Malaysia, e.g. vegetables and other items stuffed with fish paste. In addition to those, there's also the regular options offered in curry laksa places in Melbourne, e.g. fried dumplings, bean curd skin stuffed with meat, wonton, etc.

The roti was hard, but somehow had bit of the original taste. Suspect's it's a frozen piece but wasn't expecting much from the beginning anyway.

Nice and decent Malaysian food, and good value for money. It was really busy when we went there on a Thursday night, so make sure you come early.

We ordered bah kut teh (pork and other ingredients in herb infused soup) which was just alright, everything else (fish in spring onion and soy sauce + mapo tofu + hainan chicken) was yummy.

Would come back again if I happen to be in the neighbourhood.

We came here for dinner on a Tuesday evening. The restaurant was fairly busy but we were seated almost immediately. The menu was huge and comprehensive. We decided to go with the hainanese chicken rice and har mee, although the yong tofu looked fairly tempting. I thoroughly enjoyed the chicken rice as the rice was flavourful and the chicken was tender. The har mee, on the other hand, was packed full of flavour and tasted authentic. The serving size was generous and the price was very reasonable. I will return again soon to try the other dishes on the menu.

Ok things change and places change. There are good days and there are bad days. Just like everyone else, a business is the same. So I’m gonna review this restaurant as I see it on the very day I went there. I’ll give credit where credit is due. And credit this place deserves in spades. I ordered the kway teow and at first glance I was slightly unimpressed because the kway teow noodle they used is just too wide. I know all about Malaysian food and I’m a quietly confident self proclaimed Malaysian food expert. But whoa! That was really the only thing wrong with that dish. Everything else on it hits the mark! Right in between the eyes! The serving was more than generous the taste authentic with the smell of a searing hot wok. However what’s most impressive is that they give you not only 2 large prawns but they were fresh ! Not frozen. Take note fellow Malaysian eateries ! The noodle has just the right amount of charring and the bean sprouts just enough crunch - a testament to an experienced chef. So Ampang tofu I now declare you top pick on my list of best Malaysian outlet ! I’ll be back !

Take 2: Another year another visit.
As my opening line... there are good days and there are bad days. So it now seems to me that this place is a hit and miss.
Went back there this time with my wife. And I ordered the Kway teow which initially spawned this praising review. Sorry fellas. It’s a far cry from what I had. This time it’s lousy. What’s even worse is the Roast chicken and Duck combo rice my wife ordered. It sat there Dry and off putting with a massive lump of rice which took up most of the plates realestate. Those protein you know have no doubt been sitting in a corner of the kitchen for 1 or 2 days. Then our salt and pepper chicken spare ribs came. This time a measly 8 little pieces in a forrest of a week old lettuce! Enough said. You’ve lost me Ampang tofu.

Having lived in Penang malaysia for a few years. It’s glad to found a place that taste very nice.
First of all, the service was quite good. Very attentive actually knowing we have children they brought out cute bowl and cutleries for kids.
The food was brought out very very fast.
The fish head beehoon tastes very nice and the fish was fried beautifully.
Satay was 2 for $6. I think it’s expensive and this is the only bit that I think doesn’t taste nice. Meat was precooked and just put some satay sauce on top. That wasn’t impressive.
Totally love the roasted duck and noodle
The sauce on noodle was beautiful and just balance out the taste.
Roasted pork was splendid
Normally roasted pork was very salty
But this one was just lightly salted and not over powering. It was tender and chewy. Love it totally
Will come back.

Been here several times and always enjoy the Yong tau foo. You get to select the tau foo pieces and choice of soup, with my favourite being the curry. You can get decent curry laksa here too. Definitely reminds me of home😀

We came here again and got the nasi lemak. The coconut rice, curry chicken with anchovies and peanuts were yummy but it lacked an authentic sambal. We also tried the nyonya fried flounder which sauce was too thick and sour. Would stick to the Yong tau foo next time.

It's a pretty busy place and you might need to queue. Combinef that with The limited parking area doesn't help you at all. However once you manage to get in you won't be disappointed. We had combination hor fun and fried kwee tiew and they were nice. The egg gravy was probably one of the clearest one I had but it's pretty flavoursome. We also ordered roti with curry sauce. While the roti is not bad, the curry was pretty meh. The price is borderline okay considering the food was pretty good.

I love the fact that you can create your own noodle dish by selecting a soup base, noodle type and 6 different toppings (varies from fish balls, stuffed tofu, wontons, bean curd skin, the list goes on!). I always get overwhelmed by the choices. The laksa/curry soup is so fresh and flavourful! I only wish they had more seafood in the seafood laksa though. Hainanese chicken rice is top notch. If only the chicken portion was bigger though. I would walk out as a happy chappy. On a side note, staff are super friendly. It does get quite crowded so best to avoid peak hour.

Definitely one of the better Malaysian restaurants in Melbourne. A real treasure to discover, in an unassuming row of shops in Doncaster. This place was quite busy when we visited, on a 41'c day at 5:00pm, when most people had more sense than to be eating out. All the other restaurants I drove past were mostly empty. Lovely food, friendly staff, and the Bak Kut Teh is very authentic, according to my Malaysian dining partner.

Ampang Tofu is a popular Malaysian restaurant located within Village Avenue in Doncaster, along with a selection of other small restaurants and take-outs. I find myself visiting Ampang Tofu quite often, as a good friend of mine lives in the area, but it is often quite hard to find a table available, as I have never seen Ampang Tofu when they aren't busy.

I've been coming to this place at least once a fortnight since it opened years and years ago as a little shop. There's a great range of dishes, which are delicious, well-sized and moderately priced. Service is efficient. The new renovations look great! It's always filled with people at all hours and is a local favourite.

Favourite dishes are chicken laksa, fried noodles (you can ask them to switch the seafood to beef), beef brisket noodles, hor fun and fish fried rice.

Our absolute go-to for Malaysian hawker fare. The food is consistently yummy, and there is also a great variety of options which means we never get bored eating here. Since its renovation, the space is a lot more welcoming but even so, it's still always packed and the tables are close together, so we do prefer to order takeaway. Our favorites are the crispy noodles, bak kut teh and the tom yum fried noodles, but you really can't go wrong with most dishes here.

This place is loud and crowded .. but for very good reason... the food is reasonably priced and each dish we've ordered has not disappointed ...
Do not come here if you want a nice, quiet romantic dinner as this place is hectic..
The honey chicken was perfect ... nice amount of batter covering a generous juicy amount of chicken ...
Chicken curry with Roti bread looks like it won't be enough but it was very filling and extremely tasty ...

Quality food close to home. I don't vary my choice here much but highly recommend the Hainanese Chicken Rice or ipoh hor fun version. It's nice big portions with decent flavours. Another recommended dish is the laksa noodles, although not the very best in Melbourne it does the job. There is also an option for pick your own 6 combination items to go with your choice of noodles and soup base which is a fav of my parents. BBQ rice on dish is a bargain at $10 and also love their beef briskets too.

This place came highly recommended by my Malaysian cousin who comes here regularly with her family to satisfy their home cooked food cravings.

So many yummy items to choose from but I ultimately decided on my traditional favourite- chicken rice. As I was hungry I ordered the 2 meat combination with rice. As it wasn't clearly defined I asked for char siew and roast chicken. They were highly confused and informed me that they couldn't do char siew in that dish. No logical reason provided. So I had roasted chicken. Friendly service and reasonably priced.

After their renovation Ampang Tofu is much more comfortable to eat in and the wait staff have become more organised. Luckily, the quality of the food is still there. Affordable Malaysian food with a good selection of items to choose from. My favourite is the Indian Mee Goreng (had this over 10 times now over the last few years). Their Yong Tofu is good too where you choose your deep fried items to go with your choice of noodle/soup. Good items include their stir fries, the seafood crispy fried noodle and Hainanese chicken rice.

Came here a while ago because we had. Heard the restaurant had been newly refurbished. It certainly had a much cleaner, professional look, and staff service and attitude was noticeably more adequate.

The food, however, has not changed much since out last visit. Perhaps we were slightly disappointed because we were certain a revamp of the décor would ensure some change to the cookery, too. The food was relatively similar, although presented in a much neater way, but did not change from its 'average Malaysian food in Melbourne' tag that it had set itself as for me and my family. This place is still one of the most reliable and decent places to go for Malaysian food, however.

The duck red curry/curry laksa was recommended to us by the store manager, and while we were eager to try it, it was not one of our usual orders, so we're unsure of the outcome, or how to compare it to previous duck laksa. The laksa came out slightly warmer than lukewarm, and the meat was overcooked. It was definitely a let down. Other classic Malaysian dishes (sar hor fan, char kwei tiao etc.) were still on par with the Ampang Tofu we knew before, though.

One of my favourites for Yong Tau Foo Laksa is Ampang Tofu. They have recently had a renovation which took a little while. Finally, it is completed. Place looks clean and neat. And prices seems to have increased to a staggering $12 for my Yong Tau Foo. Love either the clear chicken soup or curry laksa base. Somehow, I miss the feel for the old display where I could choose the items and have it added to the soup base. Now, you get to choose the items via the order chit. Losing the nostalgic.

At least, the food was still decent and had its standards. Nice and rich base. Well seasoned items such as Seafood ball, minced pork beancurd skin and stuffed fish paste brinjal were some of my favourites.

Guess i would be here only when I am around the vicinity or I might settle for other options which are much similar and yet cheaper in price.

Finally tried the very popular Ampang Tofu. We got there around 3pm, and the place was absolutely packed even at this time. I ordered the yong tofu, which was good, and the soup was noticeably cleaner tasting than others I've tried in Melbourne. I finished the meal still feeling normal, not bloated or sickly. The serving size isn't as big as what you might find at the Grand Tofu in Glen Waverley, so some may think it not so good value for money. I enjoyed it more though, in terms of wholesomeness as I said, and the flavour and variety of choice when it comes to ingredients are of a good standard. I was a bit skeptical looking at their extended menu, as it looked more like western food court style Malaysian food rather than authentic. So, I encouraged my partner to go for one of her favourites, the assam laksa, seeing as it was a chef's special. It was actually pretty good by melbourne standards, though obviously not done to super accurate standards. The noodles were thick vermicelli, probably the closest thing you can find here to the authentic noodle. One of the downsides was that the soup was very oily, and I haven't seen one like that before. In terms of the soup flavour, which is what really makes or breaks it, I think it was slightly too sour--just didn't have that good balance between sweet and sour, where you can tell that it's just right. My partner still enjoyed it and the flavour is still quite acceptable in relation to what we have tried in Australia. All things considered, since I'm not a local and yong tofu isn't one of my favourites, I don't think I would come all the way back again. Worth hitting it up if you are around the Doncaster area though.

Drove past this place few times and reminded me of the famous Ampang yong tofu in KL . Unsure if they're related but this place does serve yong tofu with selection of items at your preference and other typical Malaysian chinese hawker food. Flavour? Of course it has to be pungent, yummy and smoky flavour generated from the breath of the wok due to high heat (wokhei) and this place has certainly delivered all the above. Avoid peak hours if you don't want to be dissapointed

My family and I are regulars here, and we have to say the place looks great after being revamped - the only downside is the accompanying rise in prices. Service is quick and polite.
Our usual orders of mixed yong tau foo noodle soup were as good as ever; in fact, the ingredients seemed to be fresher than they were pre-renovations.

Visited few times before their recent renovation, good to see the restaurant is brighter and bigger now. My advice is to visit during non peak hour to avoid waiting. Used to be cash only, now card acceptable but surcharge 1.5%, no Amex. If they use wireless payment merchant might reduce waiting time and traffic, save people jam up at the front counter and more efficient for limited walking space like this.

Efficient and friendly staff, clean and attend customer promptly.

I always order the curry noodle soup, somehow feel the recipe has improved with more herb flavour, I still wish can be spicer.

We have been to Ampang Tofu before their renovation. Food was good. The facelift has really made it look fresh and bright, spaces are better utilised, well done!

We knew it would get busy at dinner time, so got there just after 5, got a table straightaway. Menu is very easy to read as most of the dishes came with a colored photo. Prices are still very reasonable, only $1-2 more than the menu posted in the menu section in zomato. Service was very efficient, all dishes were served quickly.

We had chicken laksa, seafood soup noodle, and hokkien mee. The noodles were very nice. The only thing was, most of the chicken pieces in laksa had some very chewy bits which made it less enjoyable. I think next time I'll just have seafood laksa.

When we were leaving the restaurant at 6pm, there was a queue waiting to be seated. All other restaurants in that strip of shops were almost empty. This shows Ampang Tofu is good! However, they do take reservations as we saw waitresses were putting 'reserve' signs on some tables. Keep this is mind if you are going in peak hours.

Great yong tau foo. Plenty of choices to make, and always very tasty.

Love coming here. They are really good, and service is at the upper ends of casual Chinese dining. You will not be disappointed.

Really good hearty Malaysian food. We had yong tofu and wonton noodle soup with prawn dumpling and were so satisfied with our meals. They were so delicious and nice and hot, perfect for the cold winter weather. Staff were friendly too. Definitely coming back. Highly recommend.

One of the best Malaysian food in Melbourne. The food portions are huge and price are reasonable. There are also a lot of choices. You need to visit a few times to try the rest of the food. I will be back soon.

The food was good, with very reasonable price. Portion was huge too. A very wide range of food in the menu. Ordered Hainan chicken rice, curry ampamg taoufu, seafood curry claypot, and curry chicken noodle. All were pretty good. The salt and pepper squid worth a try. It is soft and texture was good. Does not feel oily like those that were sold in some restaurants. The good thing about their menu is that they have small portion of appetizers (at a cheaper price - $6 to $10) so that you can order a few varieties.

Where the neighbours go to have a tasty Asian meal! My friends just recently moved to this neighbourhood and together we went on a Sunday explorer mission to find a nice place for lunch. We didn't have to search long as we found Apang Tofu that served our needs and more. Although it's a Malaysian place, we ordered Yam Cha style dishes and enjoyed every single one of them. The wok made Indian Mee Goreng with Chicken, Prawn and Egg was amazingly delicious as you could taste the freshness of the tomatoes and the lightly creamy curry sauce. Combined with the dumplings and the satays, it was well enough for the three of us.

Authentic Malaysian food. We had Hainanese Chicken Rice and Yong Tau Foo with mixed noodles and curry soup. Both were very good. Too hungry at the time so I forgot to take the photo of the noodles. 2021-04-26 Took my family here for dinner tonight. The food was very delicious. New photos added.

Food was authentic and nice. Reminded me of Malaysia. Staff were a little busy at times but generally pleasant and helpful! Will be back again.

The yong tofu with noodles in chicken broth is definitely a highlight on their menu. The outdoor seating also a bonus for nice sunny days.
