Review Don't Tell Mama Shh - Doncaster

First time in DTM and you have to go! It’s the hidden gem with amazing Korean food. The Fried Chicken is to die for. Must try! The service we received was so amazing - The staff truly cares about your experience. My kid had a very happy dinner time today. They made us feel welcomed and gave us an amazing experience. We will definitely be back again.

Not the first time here. Food is always good and this time round it is no exception. We took the 5.30pm section and soon the place was packed after we settled down. The menu is now online but luckily we can still order with the waitress. Not a big fan of the online ordering system. Service is adequate. The boss is kind of rush rush. Price is high medium. Overall experience is good. Will recommend it.

The food, the ambiance, everything was spot on. The bimbimbap was so tasty, soft rice with a toasty bottom, each element had its own flavour, just a delicious combination! Loved the rice cake and sausage and really enjoyed the ginseng chicken soup. It was so hearty and soothing, the chicken was super tender and soft. Shout out to the staff, who were so friendly and kind. I was running 10min late, so had called to let them know and they made me feel so at ease (thank you so much!) I'll will definately be back!

To celebrate my wife's birthday. Nice food and voucher m vibe. Not so much people on Monday but it is just great for us. Nice local neighbourhood food.
Alice
Spacious interior and very clean. Friendly staff and quick service. The bibimbap was amazing, it has a nice crunchy rice crust. The bulgogi is average. The seafood pancake was just batter with spring onion and a few calamari pieces, there were slices of pancake without any seafood.

I come here all the time. It’s my favorite korean restaurant because I love so-ttoek so-tteok. The corn cheese chicken is very unique dish. Also, I had other dishes too I love it all. Staff are always friendly and welcoming 😀

Yes, the name is unusual. Maybe it’s a direct translation from Korean but the food does not disappoint. Korean Army Stew, ypu have to try that. This is y in Melbourne to have Korean Army Stew. It is not easy to find a Korean restaurant which serves this type of stew. You can get Korean Fried Chicken anywhere but Army stew hmmmm not easy. What can go wrong with Spam, sausages, beef slices, macaroni and spicy soup!!! Hmmm processed food yummy. We also ordered half fried chicken with sweet chilli sauce (sorry forgot to take the pic, me so hungry). We love Gami so much but next time we will come here for the fried chicken only!!! Sorry Gami 😃

Good fried chicken, average bulgogi, the place was spacious & service was fast.

Friendly staff- inexpensive meals and yum to top it off! Highly recommend this restaurant.

One of the most authentic korean restaurants! Loved the soy garlic chicken, bimbimbap and Omg, the corn cheese....amazing. Service was 20/10 - courteous & accommodating! Great job guys!
Vicki Chan
Thanks for providing us amazing service and absolutely delicious food every time! Sorry our baby always makes such a mess! Will definitely be back to try out more of the menu :)
Janet Chan
Back again with and still as good! You definitely cant go wrong with their boneless fried chicken !!
Harold Der Nguyen
Definitely one of the best Korean restaurants in Melbourne. Must try the boneless soy chicken and corn cheese!

Finally Doncaster has decent food! Was really looking forward to seeing this restaurant open. Cute decor, with cheeky wall decal, really friendly and helpful staff who go above and beyond for their patrons. Food is freakin' delicious as well - if you go, you have to try the soy garlic fried chicken, corn cheese and army stew.
Hayley
I really like the army stew and have been lowkey craving it during covid. The restaurant is quite spacious.
The Oracle
Overly impressive interior decor and size for the location, very helpful patient and knowledgable service happy to promote and explain, food served warm and punctually, maybe a tad over priced but the quality of the ingredients is above average, parking is good and also, when tables set up would be a nice and comfortable and inviting place for the solo diner,, the bbq chicken and mamas original fried chicken are good in operation tasty and crunchy but could be more moist inside the flesh but very good anyway, condiments are appropriate and the cheesy corn is excellent as too the chicken giblets though they list them as intestine they’re are on face stir fried chicken stomach and are quite good though for an inexpensive ingredient from the wholesaler I would have expected these at half the price and not as finely sliced, the bibimbab is a stand out
Well done on that I commend you
Over all an interior that does justice to the area, and more so , good service, prompt cooking, average size orations with prices a tad over for the area but the food quality makes up for it, all food is quite good though the giblets should have been more generous or less in price
Well done we shall visit again
Four stars
Friendly service, amazing food, good recommendations, pretty presentatio.
I ordered freid chicken, bibimbam, pancake and japchae takeaway at the shop, it was busy but the staff was still
friendly explained well.
I have to come back for other menu. Good to have nice korean food nearby.

My friend and I went for lunch before the 2nd lock down. I was heavily pregnant and ordered bimbibap without realizing the raw egg on top. When asked the waiter (skinny short guy, glasses?) if I could have the egg pan fried, he simply - right in front of me, scooped out the raw egg into an empty bowl (still leaving some raw egg white) and said “no we don’t do that”.
I said that at dooboo in Boxhill they offered me the fried egg when I ordered the bimbibap as the waiter noticed that I’m pregnant. He said “oh we are not like the other restaurant”. Indeed!!! By that you must mean other restaurants offer much better and considerate service than you do!
Shocking!
Will not return.
I vote for bbq K Doncaster or dooboo boxhill!
Carmen
I don't know if it was because we were watching kdramas where Lee Min Ho was Ho-ing down on some sponsorship kfc or if we were just super hungry, either way, the garlic soy & sweet chilli kfc tasted out of this world. We also had the Japchae, which was tasty but small. Would come back for more fried chicken.
Suzi Fukuda
Great service and amazing food! Favourite Korean restaurant in Doncaster for sure!
Joyce Lin
Really love my experience everytime I dine here! Staff are friendly and accommodating and food is absolutely delicious. We've tried the army stew, chicken/beef sizzling plates, and the fried chicken - all of which were amazing! Side dishes are an added bonus as well.
Beilin Song
Lovely place, plenty parking, good service, very clean place, good come back after covic, also please support the local business
Yoshi Chan
Favourite local Korean takeaway! My top picks are the cheesy flaming chicken, japchae and soy garlic boneless fried chicken!
Melbfoodlover
My favourite Korean restaurant. Always love their dishes. Very clean and attentive/welcoming staff. I always get the sausage stew or pork bone soup but this time I tried their new Kimchi Stew. It was delicious. I think it’ll be my new favourite. Price is reasonable for the amount you get. Will be back :)

Great service up untill and incident occurred on the restaurant floor. A rat which had come in from the back where a worker was getting a pack of beer from came out and was running around the floor around the tables where we were all eating . Disgusting to say the least, while we’re eating . I have a photo of the papers you have around the place how you say how clean you are with your food prep and clean up etc etc . If that came out from behind the counter, what’s in the kitchen.... This should have been a free meal to say the least , however everyone was made to pay while a rat running around . The worker eventually did get rid of it after about 5 minutes. We made contact with a couple that were eating there which took a video of this . I am not done with this.

I’d like to appreciate the DTM team - mainly to Rico for expressing genuine concerns and taking on feedback on my recent dining experience here during March 2020. While the matter was not handled properly at the time, Rico has politely reached out and compensated for the food in my next visit (to make up for last time’s mishaps).

The consistency, taste and hospitality of DTM is always there - coming directly from a local who lives in Doncaster. This is my go to Korean restaurant and I genuinely believe it’s the best in this particular area.

There are plenty of variety on food items, but I believe their Army Stew and Korean Fried Chicken is to die for. The servings are always generous whether dine-in or takeaway. I recommend anyone who lives in the Eastern suburbs to give this place a try - you won’t be disappointed!

Good atmosphere and food

Everything was great. The pork bone and potato stew was delicious and the standout of the dishes. Service not overly friendly but acceptable. Good amount of space, good for groups
Sonya
I loved the food here, by far one of the best kbbq places I’ve been to so far. The bibimbab was my favourite to eat and they had such patient customer service. Highly recommend this restaurant !
Richard Xu
One word to describe this place, OVERPRICED! The food at don’t tell mama is average, nothing special. Nonetheless if you crave for korean food and live around the neighborhood, this would be your only korean option to opt for korean dishes. Therefore, the high rating that they uphold. If you don’t mind traveling a little further into the city, i can say there are definitely much better places that are worth trying for the amount you’re paying for.
Derek Hou
Go to korean food in Doncaster, the fried chicken is no joke, staple for the eastern suburbs
Phil Wu
Very nice food! Excellent staff who were very helpful and catered to our needs. We had a big table and a really good time!

Friendly service with amazing food. We ordered the cheesy spicy chicken and the spicy seafood soup and both have well balanced flavours. This place is spacious and I constantly come back when I feel like having some good korean food.

Very friendly staff, great value lunch specials and amazing authentic Korean food, is it any wonder we will be back? Thanks so much for the experience , but sorry, I am going to be telling my mama so she can come with us next time. Loved the cooking at table was fun and there was no way 2 of us could get through the big wok of food so we had leftovers for the next day.

I like the food it taste good. I love how large the servings are. Its a good venue to dine with friends. Good food!
Great place for family and friends, lots of seating and friendly staff! Also, they make a mean samgyetang.

Really good service, constantly refilling side dishes. The army stew is not too spicy, just nice for anyone who cannot take spice. 👍

Don't Tell Mama Shh Restaurant has been around since early 2017 and one of the largest Korean restaurants in Doncaster region. I have been here a few times since it opened and I will review on my recent visit with my friend.

🔆LOCATION🔆

The restaurant takes up two shop fronts and is situated on Doncaster Road nestle between a small stripe of shops, just past the Doncaster Library and Manningham Civic Centre.

Very spacious which is suitable for large group gathering.

🔆SERVICE🔆

We visited during weekday for lunch and it was pretty quiet which was nice.

Service was somewhat OK, felt that everything was very slow even when it wasnt busy. Although we werent in a hurry but we did note that our order (only 2 items) did take a while.

🔆MENU/PRICE🔆

Half order of Original flavour Mama's Fried Chicken, $19.20
Dolsot Bimbimbap - with Pork, $15.80 (lunch special)
(assorted vegetables - spinach, bean shoot, carrot, mushroom & zucchini, egg yolk with Korean chilli sauce served with warm rice)

🔆VERDICT🔆

The half serving of KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) had 8 pieces of chicken which were good portion sizes and it came with side of coleslaw and pickled radish. The chicken was cooked well and the batter was crispy, but it really lacked in flavour which was disappointing. The Dolsot was not so dolsot to use, the stone bowl was not hot enough so it wasnt even actually cooking the rice to get the bottom crispy and yummy. It was just steamed rice in a stone bowl with all the ingredients arranged neatly on the top. I asked for no chilli sauce as I cant take spicy which thankfully they provided on a small plate for my friend.

We left feeling rather dissatisfied with having an average lunch meal.
솔meme
I love the dolsot bibimbap- the rice was actually SO CRISPY at the bottom which means that the dolsot bowl was actually hot enough unlike a lot of restaurants.
Another favourite is the tteokbokki for 2 which was really large and extremely filling for just two people!
Matt Pan
Mmmmmmm very good, the minimum require needs 140 words so I need to fill it up but the food was very good and tasty. Still not enough please

Best Samgyetang in Melb. My kids love it and the beef bulgogi too. The Fried chicken is flavorful and not too oily. Friendly staff and place is family friendly. Highly recommended
Charlieatsfood
Excellent Korean food, if they offered k-bbq as an option would be even better. The fried chicken and seafood pancake is always delicious!

The soy garlic chicken at this place was the best of any place I've been. Both boneless and boneful. The army stew, pancake and japchae was great too!

ORDER: we came in a large group, so we had the opportunity to try many of the dishes. The boneless fried chicken was outstanding and juicy with a flavoursome sauce to accompany it. The spicy sausage stew was also delicious.

SERVICE: staff were very friendly and attentive

AMBIENCE: The restaurant was very spacious and well lit, perfect for a group outing 😊

Great selection of tasty food 😋

Exceptional food. Definitely worth the trip. I highly recommend the korean fried chicken with the honey soy sauce. Also they play K Pop on the projector in the background haha. Definitely going here a third time in the future

Great experience. Highly recommend fried chicken and spicy seafood soup. Tasty and good, suitable for two people. Will come here again for sure. Deserve to have a try.

We ordered a whole boneless chicken that in the flavour of Soy garlic. It’s the best I’ve ever tried. The chicken skin was bomb and the meat was juicy. It’s normally a bit spicy but the one today I ordered was not spicy at all. Maybe they forgot to add the pepper. But it’s my go to for soy garlic place. Service speed was decent. Food always arrives around 10 minutes after order. The food portion here is perfect for 2-3 people. #soygarlic

*3.5*

Located on the Doncaster Road lays Don’t Tell Mama Shh a korean restaurant. We always drive pass here and it always seemed so packed on Saturday so we decided to give Sunday a go and lucky us, there wasn’t much people on Sunday night. We were seated straight away. The place is huge. There’s two area and tons of seating. This place is perfect for group outings!

Don’t Tell Mama shh is predominately normal korean dishes, they don’t have korean bbq. Their menu is quite extensive with many dishes to choose from. Most of the are quite spicy but you can ask the waitress to lower spice level if you can’t eat spicy food. Their most popular dish is the spicy sausage stew which we didn’t order but from the looks of people eating it, it does look delicious.

They brought out condiments and I didn’t really enjoy any of them. We ordered the Cheesy flaming chicken which was pretty good! It’s quite spicy and the chicken cooked very well. I love some good mozzarella only chicken as well! It’s also very saucey.

Next we had cheese corn which was one my favourite dishes of the night. I mean nothing can beat simple plain cheese corn. I liked the fact that they blow torched the cheese in front of us. They use a cream at the bottom which is really different with other places I’ve tried. I really enjoyed it!

We also ordered korean fried chicken - miso sauce. The chicken was slightly dry. The miso sauce was really spicy for me. I didn’t really enjoy the miso flavour that they used. It was really hard to finish.

Overall, the meat was good. I think someone who loves spicy food would definitely enjoy this place. The service is quick and the food wasn’t too expensive as well.

Tried out this little gem on Wednesday night. Suprised that it was pretty full given it being in the middle of the week but still ample parking provided. The staff were great and provided so much food! Would only suggest that the bulgogi was a tad overcooked. But all round great night out :))

Delicious Korean food. The seafood pancake is absolutely divine. Most Korean places have a hit or miss pancake , but not don't tell mama! They have been consistent with crispness and tastiness.

Lunch special is great too. Dolsot bimbimbap was great.
Sunny Days Melbourne
This Korean restaurant along Doncaster Road is quite isolated but it's clear that many people make the journey just to try their food. We have been here a few times now and it never disappoints. Parking is mainly on one of the side streets.

On a packed Saturday night, we had the Seafood & Kimchi pancake plus a Chicken Bibimbab. The pancake was nice and thin with lots of ingredients packed inside. There was a lovely crispiness on the edges. The bibimbap had loads of succulent chicken pieces and was served with fresh vegetables.

With such a novel name, this Korean joint will go far.

Previously:

What an interesting name for a Korean restaurant! It's quite a busy place so booking ahead is a great idea. While the service and atmosphere is good, the food is only reasonable. We ordered the potato wedges, pancake and fried chicken. The wedges were the highlight. You can probably get nicer fried chicken and pancakes at other Korean restaurants.
Fhy.chai
Great food at affordable prices. With a good selection of foods to try out. Never had a bad meal here and I’ve been coming for awhile now. My favorite is the fried chicken.
Renzo Welly
Perfect Korean place. Quiet, clean, polite and best of all, the food were good. Cant feel much MSG, I am allergic to it.

We had Bowl Bibimbab and Dolsot Bibimbab, both are fresh. They came with drink too.

Total damage is less than 30 for 2 decent meals.

Will we come back? Definitely.

From
Happy Diner

come here all the time, food is delicious and always consistent, comes out quickly and staff are very friendly! The boss is always smiling and welcoming!

The food and service was really good came out quick and I am extremely satisfied with the meal. Very quality ingredients and especially loved the kimchi army stew.
Littlefoodiekiki
Back trying more delicious food around Victoria. My mum and I enjoyed a delicious dinner here. We ordered a bimbimbap, which is an assortment of veggies and meat on a bed of rice. The flavour is very clean, as in it doesn’t have any too overpowering flavours. However because of this, it is a bit bland. The seafood pancake is also very crisp, not oily at all. The flavour is also very light, which I have found with both dishes I’ve ordered. If you want more flavour, you should probably order the korean fried chicken or one of the stews. My favourite stew is the Bulgogi beef stew and paired with korean rice, it is the perfect meal on a cold winter’s day. Overall, a pleasant experience!
Andy Kong
This restaurant has a really good vibe and atmosphere from the moment you enter. The spicy sausage stew was mouth watering and tasted very good!!
Jullya Chen
Loving their teokbokki dish and cheese, glad that they were able to tone down on the spice on the dish, tailoring to our needs. Would recommend this place! Friendly service too
Charles Wong
Korean chicken was nicely done and amazing. Food arrived quickly and stew hit the spot on a cold night. Service was good and nice to have Korean cuisine around this area.
Jimmy Uth
Staff are friendly. Good service
We ordered an army stew with pork for 2 people and the price is reasonable. Food is amazing and nice environment.
Craig Woods
Tasty and yum and delicious and scrumptious and delectable and mouth-watering and succulent and luscious and palatable and toothsome and flavourful and heavenly and savoury and sweet and spicy and divine and full-flavoured and piquant and sapid grub.
Charmian Mina Choi
We went to this restaurant for dinner today and ordered the bibimbap for lovers for dinner which was more than enough for two people and we also ordered the seafood jjampong tang which had a lot of seafood, the side dishes was also delicious that we had to ask for three refills!! The staffs were nice and we barely had to wait when we asked for them!!!
Eric Wu
We got the army stew which was perfect for a rainy night. Portion sizes were generous and the food was great. Staff were also nice and the place was busy even on a Monday.
Sue Jung
Another favourite of mine! Really enjoy their hotpot dishes and korean fried chicken. The customer service is average but its overall a pleasant dining experience.
Justin Lee
Delicious fried chicken, army stew and pancake. Child friendly place, restaurant had child seats ready before arrival. Will definitely return!
Wen Lee
Lunch special was worth it! Love how fresh and piping hot everything was. Soy garlic chicken was really juicy and hot. I love it :) affordable and tasty !
Flabnbone Food
Visited for dinner. The yuzu tea was delicious. The ginseng tea barely had any flavor. Ordered a green tea as well. The menu said the pot of tea was $2. Asked for an extra cup but got charged another $2.00 for it. We asked the waitress whether we should be given another pot of tea given the extra $2 we had to pay but there seemed to be miscommunication and she gave us two metal cups instead. The waitress explained the metal cups won't cost money but the ceramic tea cups will cost money (strange but ok). Maybe I should have said "can I have an extra pot of tea?" because it would still have been the same price of $2. In the end, we were never given the second pot of tea even though we paid for it ($4 = should mean two pots of tea). Lesson learned. Don't say "can I have an extra cup". Just say "can I have another pot of tea".

In terms food, we had a bibimbap. Had to eat it quick because the rice stuck to the bottom of the clay pot. It was also pretty pricey. We also had a seafood pancake which was crisp and yummy. The beef bulgogi was too chewy and over done. The teriyaki chicken was nice though. Side dishes of potato mash, kimchi, and bean sprouts were all great.

Overall, food was yum but did not like being charged $2 for a cup without giving us an extra pot of tea. Hypothetically speaking, if we asked for a third cup, would we have been charged another $2, leading to a total of$6 yet still be given one pot of tea? What about if we were charged $8 for four cups, would we still only have one pot tea?

Instagram @flabnbone_food

We ordered the soy garlic chicken (would recommend, very juicy), corncheese (delicious and flavourful) and the bulgogi set for 2 :) very good serving of everything.
Simon Daley
Lunch was great, has the Korean rice cakes and the taste was out of this world. I’m not that good at spicy foods, but this one was a bit too spicy for me. I do recommend this dish, but to those who can’t take spicy foods, ask for less chilli.
Nekros Yueee
Delicious healthy and fast, love the sweet chilli sauce . Nice and friendly service !The cute shop assistant explain the Korean word ’bibimbap’ to me
Wei Luo
Great meal, highly recommended, came here on a Weekday evening and enjoyed our meal here, Korean fried chicken! Hopefully be back in the near future.
