Best laksa in Melbourne. Have been coming here every month for many years. I have tried others but they all disappoint after having one at Malaya Inn.

Discovered this little gem by accident and we were quite glad we did! Authentic Malaysian flavours with efficient service. Food was substantial, delicious and most importantly, very reasonably priced. The menu offers a variety of choices and I highly recommend the Char Kwey Teow and Chicken Nasi Lemak.

Gonna keep it short and on point, if your taste buds longs for a bowl of authentic Singaporean laksa, don't bother searching elsewhere. No one else except Bert's cafe in Boronia (which has closed down) does it better. From the thick bee hoon noodle, down to the shrimpy coconut heaven.

This is a place where the food is full of heart. There are many items on their menu that cannot be found elsewhere in Melbourne. And it's run by a couple of really nice aunties.

We came by on a weekday for lunch and had a really lovely experience. We ordered their signature laksa - probably one of the best in town. The laksa broth was Singapore style - creamy and had a dried shrimp base. The rojak had an addictive sauce and the ice kacang was the perfect way to end our lunch.

This place may not be fancy and it certainly isn't perfect but it holds a special place in my heart.

Previously:

Malaya Inn is one of those places that have been around for decades. As with any long time restaurant, changes have occurred over the years. In its hey day, the place would always be packed with hungry customers and even though those days appear to be over, this is the place to come for some unique dishes.
Top of the list would be the oyster omelette. The number of oysters and the serving size have dwindled over the years but it still tastes pretty spot on, especially with their homemade chilli sauce. Our other go to dishes include the carrot cake, chwee kuih, Hainanese chicken and laksa (Singapore style).
Service is usually good but requires some prompting. For a restaurant in the suburbs, Malaya Inn is a lovely place for home style cooking.

This restaurant is not too far from my house and takes only 5 mins drive over there. Menu are all in English and prices reasonable as elsewhere. Can dine in or takeaways. Dishes are ordered to cook and have to wait roughly 15 to 30mins. Typical Malaysian food as this restaurant operates for more than 20 years, very old establishment. If you enjoy Malaysian food, this is the place.

Went back for a second time after trying kway chap. Kway chap was good enough to satisfy my craving. Carrot cake was authentic too! Curry Laksa on the other hand was even better. The broth was spicy for me but it was superb! Yong tau fu was good but not as big and plenty as the neighbouring restaurant. Tried the oyster omelette- crispy batter with fresh oysters dipped in a tangy chilli sauce. Yum! Great service esp with the complimentary dessert at the end. I’d be back to try other goodies.

Enjoyed a lovely meal on Chinese New Year - a fixed banquet menu starting with the traditional Yee sang, followed by a selection of lobak, fried tofu, kungpo chicken, omelette and a chinese cabbage with prawns, lobster noodles with ginger and scallions and a fruit platter. The latter was a replacement for a red bean dessert which they had run out of, but we were all too full at that point to really mind.

Went for a family dinner at Malaya Inn and managed to try many dishes, the food was good and flavourful. Portions were good and pricing was reasonable. My favourite was the Hokkien mee! We also tried the pigs trotter with vinegar and the sourness of the vinegar nicely cut through the fattiness of the trotters so it wasn’t overly heavy. The chendol (shaved ice) dessert could be improved though, it was a lot of ice with syrup, not so much like how it should be with atap chee - that was disappointing :(

One of our favourite restaurants. We've been coming here for years. We love the carrot cake and Singapore Hokkien noodles which you can't really find anywhere in Melbourne. Staff are delightfully friendly and always have a smile on their faces. Great prices and value which when compared to other Malaysian restaurants, is comparably cheap.

Decided to check this place out after a friend told us they had crabs. We ordered 2 chilli crabs with steamed and also fried mantao buns. Additionally, we had a Singapore fried noodles, salted fish noodles, and a watdanhor noodles. Everything was delicious and tasted hot. The only thing was that service needs to be quicker, it took ages for the food to get out on the table. The crab was amazing but I think the sauce was too watery because the water from the crab probably came out during cooking. Overall, I loved this place and would definitely come back for more Malaysian food.

Came here on recommendation by a friend, booked on Zomato an hour prior to deciding to go it for dinner and got a call half an hour later to confirm my booking!

Headed here with two others not as familiar with Malaysian food to try our the real Malaysian delicacies.

We had 6 dishes (mainly between the 3 of us and really enjoyed the meal. I find this place very authentic in the dishes I tried, and will come again to the more main stream dishes to go with rice nex time!

Really recommend if you are after small eats such as fried carrot cake (Malaysian style), popiah, five spice meat and chwee kueh!

A decent family run restaurant business with smiley and good services rendered to customers.
Great place, efficient service and great food especially their sweet and sour pork (Hong Kong style) & carrot cakes (authentic Malaysian style).
We will definitely make a comeback!

Always have had decent food in this place - their service is very humble and quite atypical with Chinese /Malaysian restaurants. They're not as harsh as the bigger commercialised ones obviously as they're all family. Definitely order the Guinness Pork Chops as those are definitely one of the highlights for me. I wish their complimentary dessert red bean soup was a little sweeter though :(

Had a Merlion Club event there recently and it was a smash for lunch menu of only $25 ten course meal, the rojak entree was nice and spicy with lots of ingredients, poh piah was fresh and to die for, Chye Tow Kway was fabulous with just the right touch of spicyness while Hokkien Mee was very authentic and not too saltish, the chicken was crispy and full of flavour , yam basket nice and authentic , while sambal fish was fresh and full of spicy flavors.

Tried their new homemade Otak dish Nasi Lemak and black Chai Tow Kway, reckon it's one of the more authentic ones in Melbourne. Albert and Vinny chef and owners will surely take care of you. Go try, will not be disappointed.

closest restaurant to authentic malaysian food you can get here in Melbourne. Lots of variety with flavours very similar to those authentic dishes in malaysia. the food wasnt perfect and the environment was very dull but the service was excellent and the dishes speak for themselves. you have to try the carrot cake dish and the oyster omlet. been around malaysia and singapore and still cant find dishes listed above as good as it is here in malaysia in.

We come back to this place regularly because it is close to our house. Always order the oyster omelette (yummy!), occasionally the roast chicken with hainanese chicken rice, belachan kangkong, or the hor fun. When they have the complimentary dessert (warm glutinous rice) we are very happy! Service was quite slow last time, but it has improved in the past few months. We will be coming back from time to time.

The food is still great and authentic. Service is always with a smile. But the two poor aunties were run off their feet. It was ok as the food is worth it and they dont mind you self servicing to help them out...It does get busy during lunch hour on weekends. Popiah is nice and crunchy and the Kueh Cap is a must...and not forgetting their famous Singapore Hokkien noodle...

Best fish head bee hoon (vermicelli) soup in Melbourne: we are huge fans and travel all the way from south east for this.
Food at Malaya Inn feels very much home made: presentation isn't great, but portion is big and I don't think they use MSG (my eyes go red every time after heavy-MSG Chinese meals).
The grandma gives us sticky black rice sweet soup for free everytime.

Nice friendly after work dinner place for couples or families. Popped in when the glorious Kota Chicken place nearby was closed for the summer holidays. Glad I did, because we had a very tasty meal. Roti Chanai - with chicken - wow, loved the curry sauce on this one, but could have done with a few more pieces of Roti to suck up the sauce. Partner loved the chanai so much his eyes went big and I had to rush to get some before he scarfed it all. Singapore noodles was delish, nice fat king prawns, chicken, egg, other veg. Partner had a Chilli Beef with Cashews that he said was lovely. Dinner was served with complimentary tea (not jasmine, maybe lap sou?) and water. I ordered a coke, which I would have liked a bit colder.

Malaya Inn is not flash, and the glass and plateware need updating because they're quite worn-looking. On the upside, they were friendly, our meals arrived quickly and the food was delicious. Its the kind of place you go to for a meal that's tasty, when you can't be arsed cooking after work.

So far so good. Dropped in for lunch with an old friend from Malaysia. He is a regular and recommended Curry Laksa. I must say it is a good choice. Sorry I forgot to take photos. Also tried the Mee Siam (very nice) so that I can report to my Singapore friends. Will come back to try other Singapore favourites like Carrot Cake, Prawn Mee and Fish Head Curry. Cost a little more but a nicer atmosphere environment. Oh! I forgot to mention the free dessert ... Or Bee Bay (Singaporean) or Bee Ko Moy (Penangites).

You need to be selective about what you order. Probably best to stick with the Malaysian favorites. The oyster omelette is extremely good (one of the best I've had in Melbourne). On the other hand, the dumplings aren't good.

Fresh & Delicious. I am not sure where all the negative reviews came from but we thought that Malaya Inn was delicious. We ordered the yam ring, Chinese veggies, salt n chilli pork and the popiah - all which were tasty and fresh but admidtedly, a bit on the higher side than other restaurants by about $1-$2 but it's worth it for the quality. The popiag was especially nice. I would recommend this restaurant. We had no issues with service at all, very attentive and friendly.

Absolutely delicious curry laksa and fish head curry. We frequent this place almost monthly. The curry laksa rivals that of the best from Penang (of course the Penang one got cockles). The curry fish head was very nice and tastes like my granny's "kiam hoo koot" curry with fish head. According to the auntie in charged, the food is free of msg. Generally, we get the wholesome home cooked feeling plus yummy taste . .doesn't taste like many restaurants which you go home thirsty from the msg.

Best Malaysian/Singapore food in melbourne!. Me and my family went there last week for dinner. we ordered carrot cake and popiah as our entrees. The taste of the carrot cake is as similar as Singapore style! we had hai chicken rice, laksa and Singapore hokkien mee for our main course. I've got to say the laksa is the best I ever had in Australia. I tried others in city but its not as good as the one I had here. I would definitely come back again!

The CHICKEN rice was sooooo yum that our group each had a pile of it before the main dish arrived. My friends from Singapore said it's the most authentic singamalay food in melbourne. I don't know about that but the food absolutely swept me off my feet. We had oyster omelet with some chili sauce to dip, the egg goes perfect with the oysters. Then the stir fry veggie chicken prawn mix presented in a bowl of fried taro, divine. The Sichuan egg plant, I was speechless because of the mouthful food. And others... You can see the photos I uploaded as my friend was speaking hakkiah to order and I don't understand a thing. On top of that, I myself finished a whole bucket of it oh yeah.

I believe they have the best hainanese chicken in Melbourne, at least according to my taste. Other dishes are very nice as well, all tasty. They are generally busy so book ahead to avoid disappointment. If you like chicken backside, you must pre-order so they can prepare a plate full of chicken backside :). Other recommended dishes includes kangkung belachan, French pork hock, and rojak.

Really proper and authentic Malaysian/Singaporean food. It is also really good value for money - the portion size is really good considering the reasonable price you pay. For more specialised dishes such as crabs and other more unique items we were advised to call a few days in advance just to ensure availability which is fair enough. In doing so we were able to ensure that we could enjoy a really good feed!

Being a yam ring fanatic, I was excited to try another version of it, this time from good ol’ Malaya Inn. Even though it has lost some of it’s shine, it’s still a restaurant that’s near and dear to my heart. I had the yam ring, oyster omelette and salt n pepper calamari. The yam ring was nice and crispy with a lovely filling. Unfortunately the oysters in the omelette were small and not very fresh. The calamari was delicious. It was fried well and had a nice savoury flavour. Definitely worth a visit.
