Review Colonial Cafe - Doncaster

What a delicious experience!! I highly recommend you try this place. My mum and I were looking for somewhere where myself being on ketogenic diet (low carb) and where my mum being a vegan could both enjoy some food and drink. As you can imagine, it’s a pretty hard thing to do.. I had the halloumi salad which was keto and absolutely amazing!!!!! And my mum had a vegan hot chocolate and a vegan sweet which ticked all the boxes! Not to mention my iced long black was to die for :D! I was so impressed with the service as there was no hesitation with our complex dietary requirements, all was catered for and my meal was brought to my table and the ingredients used was explained to me, just to check it was ok for me. That kind of thoughtfulness isn’t very common and for that I am encouraging all to try this great place and experience it for yourself! Thanks guys for making it a great meal and experience 🤩🤩🤩

I don’t usually write reviews but i’ve stopped my this cafe before my shifts at work and the coffee is just amazing! Perfect every single time, staff have always been friendly and efficient. The prices are definitely worth it. The range of sweet selections are so nice and the cheesecake is delicious :)

I had the Salmon breakfast and it was absolutely delicious. Although I'm a bit disappointed with the coffee. I had a mocha and the coffee tasted burnt and bitter. I guess there's room for improvement

Good serving sizes, good coffee, not too expensive, do I need to say more?

Terrible service. I have been waiting for unusually long time for my coffee. I could see the customers after me got their orders. I told one of the staff who delivered orders to table that I had been waiting for quite some time for my coffee. He went to the counter and came back telling me that the staff at the counter couldn't remember taking my order. I approached the counter, telling the staff how much cash I paid, got the change and he stamped my coffee card. I got the order number to put on table from him as well. He told me he couldn't remember or located the order. He did apologise and I got my coffee. I don't think this place knows what good customer service is and the staff is so unprofessional.

A Hidden Gem. In the busyness of a major shopping centre it is hard to discern the best place for a quick meal or just a coffee. Well Dolce Expresso is just that place in Doncaster Shopping Town. You will be greater by very generous staff offering a broad range of generous sized meals, cakes and other delicies, all combined with great coffee. Highly recommended.

Super tasting traditionally wrapped Nasi lemak! Chilli was so good! 5 stars! Hidden away in Colonial fresh supermarket Service is fantastic! Must try! They make it very easy to do takeaways for my friends and family, all nicely packed.

Bought the chee cheong fun today plus the sotong nasi lemak and curry puff. It’s soo good like the ones we get from home. Can’t wait to try the nyonya chang we ordered.

We had unpleasant experience colonial cafe this morning. Our first time there so we we’re unsure what’s available and how to order. Staff not friendly, i believe the owner was there too. Ask him questions and all you got was cold shoulder. Es teh tarik was bad.. tasteless, although i should say the nasi lemak belibis was not bad. Would not go back and recommend to friends.

I drove all the way from Rowville to Doncaster to get Nasi Lemak for my Sunday lunch. Knowing me I saw Siew Pau, Yam Cake, then Ruth/CocoBites Nyonya Cake- I brought it all as I know they are all excellent home cook foods that I tried before. I have a cup of Latte with Siew Pau which the staff happy warm it up. I met the owner Edwin. We have a very nice chat. So happy to hear that they are opening same concept at Glen Waverley so that is nearer for those of us on that part of town. Keep it up Edwin & Maggie, you both work very hard doing great for M’sian & S’pore community here in Melbourne that bring us all together with a common interest of not missing our hawker style foods. Looking forward to more variety each week. Always remember consistence quality not quantity.

Hubby and I celebrated our anniversary a couple of weeks ago, and given the current lockdown status in Melbourne, we didn't have a choice but to celebrate our anniversary at home with our kids. I ordered in some Malaysian food from Colonial Cafe based on recommendations by my sister who had ordered from them recently, and we enjoyed the food for both lunch and dinner on our anniversary date. Contacting the business to order was easy via the Facebook page, and response time was quick. During the Covid-19 lockdown, Colonial Cafe delivers to further suburbs on certain weeks (announced on their Facebook page), but we live close enough to be able to order for next-day delivery. The food was delivered chilled, and I was happy to reheat the dishes for my own peace of mind. We all enjoyed the food, and we found the quality didn't suffer too much with the delivery option. Flavour-wise, this is as authentic as Malaysian food outside of Malaysia can be. The Nonya kueh (cakes) I ordered were also pretty good I can see why my sister and cousins enjoy ordering from Colonial Cafe.

Colonial Cafe distributes to a number of asian groceries in Melbourne and we are grateful enough to have one nearby our place.. we tried the nasi lemak and assam laksa..
The nasi lemak wasn’t as good as I expected and it had a bit of expired coconut milk aftertaste.. we didn’t fall or but it wasn’t too pleasant to have.. the assam laksa was pretty good, it was quite authentic and very spicy..
Overall a pretty good first experience they had plenty of other things to try and we will see if anything else tickles our fancies at some point in the future..

Whenever I miss home food, having one of their nasi lemak bring those memories and nostalgia of proper Malaysian/Singas food. My favourite bit is the sambal, pungent potent and spicy enough to satisfy my homesick tastebuds. :) Whilst the nasi lemak bungkus is a must when visiting there, the curry (potato and chicken), nicely spiced crusty puff is enough to keep my homesickness at bay :)

I only patronize this restaurant for coffee and some deserts while waiting for my husband to finish his groceries shopping here. They sell mostly Malaysian food in packet form for takeaways. Tried their chicken curry puff before and it was good. The packets of food are mostly frozen and have to be microwave before eating. Prices are reasonable.

Had a nasi lemak bungkus and the teh Tarik, surprisingly good! The milk tea was so rich and smooth, the bungkus was very flavorful, will be one of my new favorite food places at Westfield!

I had my lunch with Sambal nasi goreng and salted white kuih. Overall all the food are in fridge and need put to microwave to heat up. Sambal fried rice not nice, didn’t taste sambal chilli hot, oily and salty. To be honest can go to restaurant to order fresh cook and bigger portions with fair cost. Kuih not bad, just not enough sauce for serving. The Tarik, taste good and I know it not similar with local Malaysia beverages, not much bubble for teh tarik. Can go pappa rich for teh tarik.

Delicious cheap Malaysian food with so many options. I like to get my work lunch from here when I feel like a treat. I’ve tried hainanese chicken rice, chicken rendang, Nasi Kemal and they are all delicious. Also the curry puffs are a must 🤤

3.5

Who would’ve thought that within Colonial Fresh Market (selling green groceries and dry goods) lies Colonial Coffee serving up a galore of Malaysian goodies!

There’s an entire fridge section dedicated to Malaysian staples of all sorts from Nasi Lemak to Curry Laksa all priced below $9.

The concept is simple: pick out the items you fancy and if you wish to eat in, they will be warmed up for you on the spot; or if like us, you may also purchase them cold to take home for reheating later.

I really don’t know what possessed us that day, but we picked out a whopping total of 9 items! Subconsciously prepping ourselves up for a zombie apocalypse perhaps? Lol!

Ranging from average to good, the best of the lot would have to be the Turmeric Basmati Rice with Rendang Chicken and Lobak. The Nasi Goreng Kampung missed the mark and the Pandan Layered Cake was ordinary at best, but the Nasi Lemak Bungkus and Curry Laksa were quite authentic and the rest were decent.

They have a dedicated kitchen located in Clayton where all the food is prepared and distributed to various locations apart from this venue, one being Colonial Fresh Market in Glen Waverley and the other at Papparoti in Springvale.

Not necessarily the best Malaysian to be had, but the variety is good, prices are low and the convenience is there, with the added bonus of some very cheerful and helpful service.

Colonial Coffee is an unassuming little stand in the middle of the excellent Colonial Fresh supermarket in Doncaster shopping centre serving delicious Malaysian dishes that you can takeaway and reheat later, or eat in with the super friendly staff heating it up for you. Prices are very reasonable with most dishes under $8 and the yummy Nasi Lemak bites coming in at around $5.70. I also love their Teh Tarik which is only $3.50! So far I’ve tried the pork noodle dish pictured (I promptly forgot the name), curry laksa and nasi lemak bite with cuttlefish - all were super fragrant, delicious and seemed more authentic than other popular Malaysian chains I’ve tried like PappaRich.

I don’t think I’ll leave a visit to Doncaster now without taking a few dishes home as they are so convenient to take to work or heat up at home!

Omg I cannot rave about this place enough!!! Their nasi lemak bites have that flavour punch that is so addictive! After trying them out for the first time at the World Rice Festival I can tell you now I have become a regular 👌👌

We frequent Colonial Coffee for lunch especially during the weekend. I enjoy their nasi lemak and my partner will always have their curry noodles. Prices are very reasonable for the portions. Staff are friendly and accommodating.

If you are looking for hidden treasure at Westfield Doncaster, then this is it!
Positioned in the middle of the Colonial Fresh Fruit Market, this little eatery sells a wide variety of Malaysian fare.
Their curry puffs are highly recommended - the fillings go right up to the edge and there are giant sized versions as well. Love the fact that they have sardine curry puffs too - not an easy find in Melbourne.
Their kuihs are not too sweet and are always beautifully presented.
Tried the butterfly pea rice with rendang chicken today.....which left me almost speechless. The generous pieces of chicken were drenched in a delicious sauce and this was served with perfectly cooked blue (yes, blue) rice and out-of-this-world achar.
This place seems to get busier each time I visit (especially on weekends when they have a lot more items on sale compared to on weekdays).....so you better get on down here soon before the secret is out!

Really loved Colonial Coffee- it seemed to be run by a few very nice aunties making really yummy and economical food.

I ordered Nasi Lemak w squid for myself and it has a delicious kick to it. It was soooo yummy 😋 ordered cheong fun for the kids and they loved the noodles, not so much the fish balls but that’s just them being weird. 😛

Ordered the juice combo which was really delicious, and the takeaway Nutella cake was so yummy and not too sweet. I got the layer cake as well, but found the flavour not as yummy as the ones from bengawan solo or ones from Indonesia.

Either way it’s a great little spot in the middle of the Colonial Market to rest and fuel up 💕
