Review Senoji Japanese Restaurant - East Victoria Park

Agreed with Eric’s comment below – definitely purely for food and culture enthusiast only! My partner and I are so so glad we found this little hidden gem and met the loveliest man behind it all – who has been there for 20+ years! Yuki (Head chef) puts his pride and soul into making these dishes as authentic and simple as possible – identical to the taste you would find in Japan. I have never enjoyed such simple tastings in Japanese food in Perth, unlike at Senoji. Hands down J Note: The chef solely works alone; please be mindful of the chef, and expect to wait – Yuki does an amazing job at managing, preparing the meals and serving. There were 3 tables and we did not wait all that long – we were happy to. Senoji has been the first Japanese Restaurant we have been to that has kept it simple with no fusion – and we have tried all the Japanese Restaurants North to South of the river of WA The food was delicious, authentic and the chef was very kind - remember not to shake his right hand too hard though, he has an injury! Thank you Chef. We will see you again soon.

Purely for Food and culture Enthusiast only!!! Literally a japanese home kitchen in restaurant setting. **If you want an eat and go, this will not be your option. Cause ONLY THE CHEF ALONE working and serve you most of the time. Be prepare for a longer wait. So I would suggest plan your dishes to keep your food coming. A great overall quality of real Japanese cuisine. Prepare to encounter authentic japanese culture which you might see mean (very rare), it's just their culture. The chef is a lovely person. Had the best sashimi pick around town. The salmon were evenly textured and well balanced fat ratio, served with the right temperature. You can taste every each ingredient from the udon as well. you can even taste the soup from the noodle!! The broth was rich and all ingredients were fresh pick. Definitely will go back for more!!! REMINDER: Do not expect fancy restaurant service as it's privately owned little cosy hidden gem. Treat it as you're being served at home.

We stumbled into this place looking for a place to eat and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food throughout our dinner. The chef puts his heart and soul into making his dishes authentic and tasteful for his customers, while giving efficient service. Since then we've come back and still the food is fantastic. We'll be sure to do another booking at Senoji again!

Hands down the most authentic Japanese dining experience in Perth. Expect a wait, expect food to be made to order, and enjoy each other's company in an authentic Japanese setting. New favourite.

We had to wait a bit longer for food but it was well worth it. Amazing food, sauces in every dish was on point. Chef was very nice and friendly, he also gave us complimentary dessert which was delicious.Highly recommended for authentic Japanese food.

This is one of the most authentic Japanese restaurants I have ever been to. The flavours were absolutely delicious and it was worth all the wait! :) I am so glad I gave it a go! Chef is very passionate and it reflects on the dishes. Highly recommend it!

Interesting place. We came for early dinner, kids wanted sushi, but this place s out of sushi rice. That aside, kudos to the chef, trying his best to prepare good Japanese dishes. The waiter too, was doing her best to welcome everyone, do the clean up, take orders and serve food. She was looking exhausted but still doing her best waiting tables. Authentic? Yes but i ve tried other japanese chefs’ food too so i can say, to be fair, food here is alright. Serving is still small (that’s japanese serving) even though the menu reads ‘big serving’. Price wise, yes it’s pricey for the taste but then again i ve been to other japanese places where we paid 500 for a family of four (dinner) - prepared by Japanese chefs too. So, yea, again, this place is okay. Atmosphere is a bit gloomy. Good for long chit chat with friends. Great for families and couples too. There s always room for improvement of course & we wish the chef (s) and the entire Senoji team good luck.

Very authentic Japanese cuisine and some exceeded expectations by a lot!! Though not all food was extraordinary, the gyoza was pretty average. Food was overall great but jazz music really gave me anxiety when I’m having sushi.. and the scent could improve it smells like soggy wood upon entrance which takes away a bit of appetite. Price was on the higher side but quite worth it for the quality of food. I am surprised that I only came to discover this place after years and years of eating at Vic park every day.. but I will be back, they got the sake tastings that we wanna try next time!

Interesting to read the mixed reviews here. I've been here 4 times, and have had an amazing experience every time, barring once where the sushi I ordered seemed to have been thawed out rather than made fresh. That's why my rating is 4 star.

The sake/drinks menu is extensive, (Try the plum wine!) there are lots of unique items on the food menu, and the service is super attentive. Recommended.

Edit: I went back here on the 18/6/19 and everything was frigging perfect. I enclose a collage of what we had. This included Wagyu tataki, Kimchee Tofu, Karage chicken, a Chef's assortment of sashimi, and Scallops seared in butter. The Kimchee Tofu was the stand-out. Simply the best kimchee I've ever had. I just upgraded my rating. :)

I have lived in Victoria Park for a while and last night was my first time to the restaurant. Impression: lack of Japanese restaurant standard. Poor menu presentation: small font and not pictures to reference.
Small portion: the portions are small so don’t expect to feel satisfied after a meal.
Tasteless or salty: there is not freshness of the food but indeed the salt overpowers the entire meal.
Confusing Ambiance: why an old Japanese restaurant has English jazz music playing the the background. Just odd.
Poor food presentation: sushi cut is just unprofessional. I can do better than that!
In conclusion: will not go back again for around 40 per person.
Nikki
Food is very authentic and very fresh.... that's if you get it! Have been here many times but the wait is more than 30 - 45 minutes. That includes ordering take away! Its also pretty pricey for what you get. It's a shame as the food is great, service is great just very very slow!

I've never been to Senoji in Victoria Park. My friends keep telling me how great it was, hence we went and try it out.

I was disappointed with what they have on offer.

Half the specials on the board were sold out to start off on a Saturday evening at 6:30 pm. We have 7 people dining at Senoji, we just ordered the entree. There was nothing to wow about.

I don't think I would return to this restaurant again. The food was either too blend or too salty. We ordered the sashimi dish, the fish was actually frozen and thawed out. We were not impressed at all.

First up, the staff were very welcoming and polite upon arrival and continued to do their best throughout the night. The ambience is pretty ordinary but on most occasions you can forgive or overlook this if the food is worthwhile (Buen 151 on Chapman Road Bentley is a case in point). I think the front of house staff are on a 'hiding to nothing' given the poor management of orders shown by the kitchen staff. We were a party of seven dinning on a Friday night. The timing and pace of the arrival of food was abysmal. I was the last to receive my main meal, about 40 minutes after the first on our table received theirs. The mains arrived one dish at a time, slowly, ever so slowly. And these were not complicated dishes! The quality of the food was acceptable (not outstanding) but dear me, it is over-priced. And so are the drinks - $15 for 500ml of very ordinary Japanese beer. Coupled with the poor management of our orders (and a half-baked BYO policy - wine only), I can't find a good reason to go back again. I'm not quite sure how this very mediocre, over-priced Japanese restaurant has stayed open for so long given the wonderful Japanese dinning options in Perth (our family eats a lot of Japanese food). Perhaps the location on the ever-thumping, pumping Albany Highway café strip is the best thing they have going. Sorry Senoji, it's Buen 151 for the quick fix and then Kuza and Nobu for the higher-end stuff.

Went to Senoji last night, I called up prior and booked a table for 2 and ordered 2 okinominyakis to the lady on the phone. I got a call back 5min later saying that 2 okinominyakis were quite large and chef recommends 1 to share between 2 people, I said we will be sure to eat both and more of the menu and take home what we can’t eat and she said no worries that would be fine. Got to the restaurant with this order being a surprise to my partner and the lady waiter came over and started a conversation with me giggling saying she doesn’t know how to say this but the chef will not let you have the 2 okinominyakis as he wants you to try different things on the menu. I assured her we would but I would like my order which I’ve already made in advance to come out. Meanwhile my partner is so confused that I had to explain what was going on. The lady goes back to the kitchen and comes back out and said no he will only cook 1 okinominyaki, I said to her it was rude to refuse someone their meal after having to pre order as stated on there website.
We ordered 4 other dishes and pork Goza being one which tasted just like the packet ones I purchase in the shops so very disappointed.
I will not be back here again to eat and I will not recommend it to anyone else for that matter.
Kristal Mak
The worst Japanese restaurant I ever tried. The crumbed pork fillet was dry and chewy. Rice was barely warm and the prawn tempura was soggy, prawn spoiled! Will never ever go back again.
Matt
Great authenticity. Perfect eating experience. The food is second to none. We always have a great time when eating food Yuki has prepared. A++++
Hungry Hippo
We were a table of 5 requesting share plates for mains. We got one dish every so often and kept waiting for our rice to come out. We ended up so hungry picking at the dishes that we ended up having plain rice on its own. All I can say about the food was it arrived (eventually). The menu was overpriced for the quality of service, ambience and quality of food.

The wait staff were polite but lacked training as they didn't know how to prioritise and left customers waiting to order, eat and pay. Sorry Senoji but tonight's service didn't make our night enjoyable whatsoever. I believe the other tables around us would have felt the same.

Zabt
Really delicious food and friendly staff. However, a little bit pricey for what we got. Perhaps some complimentary edame would be good so we could enjoy the beer (and possibly order more food).
Linhx Vu
Terrible foods quality, expensive prices. Will not com back at all. Waste of money. Noodle was like $18 but only 1 prawn.. Regretted! Service wasn't good too
Tan Yong Hui
It's a good place catch up with friends. Good environment, everything go slowly, like tapas style Japanese. Can eat slowly, chit chat, no need rush. I like it. A lot choices from sake and Japanese beers. Very authentic. The Agedashi Eggplant and the grill Beef Tongue are must try! It's was so yum! Will definitely come back again.
M
Came here tonight for dinner and was really disappointed with the wait times. It took 20 mins to get entrees and then when mains were served, only 3 out of the 4 of us received our meals. The fourth person had to wait another 20 mins for theirs, by which point everyone else had finished eating!
Food was ok, but service times need to be improved.
Renato
The food was very good but took forever to come to the table. The service was also a bit lacking, like the atmosphere. I don't think I will rush back.
Elster
Very nice food. Though small servings and a bit pricey. $3.00 for 1 serve of plain rice. Service was a little slow having to ask several times for water and cutlery... considering there were not many bookings the night. Glad we tried but it but i wouldn't go back.
Kenny Ngoo
Atmosphere was nice. However food is pricy and portions were not what the price itself was suggesting. The teriyaki chicken was thin and small and barely anything at all and it came without rice(+$3) which came to nearly $23 for small teriyaki chicken and rice. I ordered chicken Katsu curry rice but you wouldn't have guessed that it was worth $18. You can get the same thing in other places for $12 and lesser.
Chris Quek
Great personalized service by the owner. It is run by a family. The sashimi is very fresh and miso soup was not at all filled with MSG. Ramen was smooth and lovely. I had the pork loin bento set.
We were initially apprehensive that the location was quite quiet but the food is worth coming down.
The Life Of A Designer
Very authentic Japanase restaurant in Victoria Park! Good quality and good value too considering how fresh the food was! The service was friendly and efficient!

I had dinner here tonight and was very impressed!

Free sake tastings! If you are not sure if you like sake, you can taste it first and decide whether or not you want it. I ended up having a lychee wine, which was delicious!

Wait staff: very friendly, smile while serving you and have a few laughs. Highly attentive but not overly attentive. Nice and friendly and make you feel welcome.

Speed: my meal came out very quickly, as did the drinks.

Food: I had the agadashi eggplant, the chicken and mushroom soup and a green tea ice cream.

The eggplant was cooked to perfection. Tender and tasty. The agadashi sauce was full of flavour. It costed $10.

The chicken was so tender and so were the mushrooms. Too often shiitake mushrooms are chewy - but not in this case! It was accompanied by some tender vegetables that were also cooked just right. The soup, again, full of flavour but not overpowering. It costed $8.

The green tea ice cream was also delicious-homemade, a prominent green tea flavor, drizzled with white chocolate sauce: a wafer and sweet azuki on the side. And it was creamy (alot of green tea ice cream that I've had was icey). It was a very generous serving! If i was at home i would have licked the bowl out. It costed $7.50 and could have easily been shared between two.

Drinks: as i said before, the lychee wine was delicious. I also had green tea, which I could tell was high quality from the taste and, like most Japanese restaurants, came with a free refill.

Presentation: the restaurant was clean and had a Japanese feel to it. The food was presented nicely.

Cost: for the two (not so) small dishes, the lychee wine ($9), the green tea ($3 with a free refill) and dessert, I paid $37.50, which is very good considering all of the above!

Overall, I can't wait to come back here and try it again! There are many other dishes on the menu that I'd like to try.

I'd suggest to any readers to try and come before 6.30pm as it is quieter or make a booking to ensure you don't miss out!

When you're dining in this place & the waitress mention only 1 chef in the kitchen, make sure you choose another place. There are about 20 tables, only 5 tables taken (with total of 12 people) and the waitress cant take the food order because they said they were quite busy when they have 4 waitresses walked pass us with confuse look. First time came to this place&it was a dissapoinment.

Romantic authentic Japanese restaurant at Vic Park. Good food, average portion and reasonable price for fresh and home made Japanese food. Very friendly service ( I think she is the lady boss).

Yuki I cooks from the soul. A real taste of Japan. Salmon head and wing and whiting tempura among the highlights. Add an interesting sake list and the experience is complete.

A large group of us (9 adults) managed to get a booking at Senoji for dinner. There was quite a few people already there (maybe 2 other large groups) but the staff were fantastic in trying to accommodate everyone.

The menu looked a bit pricey but we ordered a variety of mains each (from the chef sashimi selection to vegetarian sushi to katsu curries). We placed our orders at approx 8pm and the food followed maybe 45 minutes later, one dish at a time. It was a long disappointing wait (definitely not worth it) with small portion sizes ($10 for 5 pieces of prawn tempura sushi) to barely warm katsu in curries (the curry itself wasn't even piping hot).

They took one of our orders wrong and then informed us it would take another 30 minutes to cook that dish (we just cancelled the dish). We were all very disappointed in our food. Our final dish arrived at our table over an hour after we ordered (it was a some crumbed fish with a bowl of rice).

We also asked for an itemized bill (to make sure we weren't charges for the cancelled dish) and was handed a receipt with a list of prices that we were being charged and had to go through a menu to see what dish it might have been.

Very disappointed in our dining experience here. The staff was great however the service and food was not worth the wait. Definitely would not come here again.

Note: no photos were taken as everyone was starving and pretty much dug into their dish as soon as it hit the table.

Dined here last week with my husband and we were both very impressed with the food.
Best Sashimi I've had since moving to Perth.
Will come back and brave the sake list!

I went here a couple of times now, for lunch and dinner. Both times I really enjoyed the food, especially agedashi tofu and sashimi. Lovely staff and relatively fast service.
Izzy Alyce
Delicious Japanese food, been here twice and it was great both times. The staff were really nice and the food is great value for money. Would recommend it to anyone.
Riley Morrell
Yum. Have been here twice now and faultless. Got 4 dishes for three and only $67. Great place. Chicken was so so tender and the rice was flavourful

It was bit too expensive for the food u get. A bit overpriced to match the foods luxury as u can go to many jap place which does the same for much much lesser in price.

A consistent favourite. I've lost count of the times I've dined at Senoji with various permutations of family members. And the reasons I'll keep going back are the consistency of food quality and great service - even with the changeover of waitstaff over the years. Last night, a pre-birthday dinner treat for my daughter maintained that high standard. Entrees of cheese & avocado and scallop katsu were very as good as expected. Chicken gyoza was good, but to be honest, may have been served just a little prematurely. Taste was fine but I would have preferred it a little firmer. A very minor criticism though. Miso was very good - something that shouldn't be taken for granted, and we shared a bowl of butter corn which was tasty and a nice complement to the other dishes. For mains, I had pork belly shoga-yaki and my daughter had chicken katsu - possibly our favourites, respectively and we were certainly not disappointed. But there's always the dilemma of what you have to miss out on, and with my wife off socialising elsewhere, there was no sashimi component to round out the meal. But you can't have it all - at least on the one night! But, having missed out on the sashimi last night there's plenty of incentive to go back again and rectify that. Only one question remains. Why are most of the entrees served as 5 pieces? 4 or 6 pieces could be more easily divided, but 5 is only going to be equal if there are 5 diners. Is there some significance to this? I'd really like to know, so hopefully I'll remember to ask next time I'm there.

Not authentic japanese. Overall, not authentic japanese food- blend tasting poor quality food. I wonder if this establishment is run by Chinese chef.
Xspiritoffunx
Very disappointed. We ordered $100 of take away food. It was very poor value for money. Small portions and very bland taste, average quality ingredients. Tuna sashimi was 'soggy', Squid pancake tasted western with no Japanese identity or character, Agadashi tofu had nice tofu, but batter was a substitute for make up from an alien movie - more like sticky flesh and sauce had no mandatory ginger flavour. Next was the wagyu beef tataki (like carparcio) -I had high expectations based on the menu description, but this beef was tasteless, similarly the Shoga-yaki pork belly ginger raised high expectations but all I was left with was with a feeling that it had been cooked by a person with no or limited Japanese cooking experience - very bland and tasteless again. The gyoza were not bad. Have been eating for many years at an alternative and their food is better and cheaper but they were closed tonight. Gave Senoji a go and thought they were an up market high quality establishment. Phoning the order through was problematic with poor product knowledge by the attendant. Will not be going back.

Complete rip off - stay away. Only went here cos Izumi down the road was closed on Sundays. Never again. Terrible time ordering - took 15mins to order & put us off the okonomiyake as she said it took over an hour to make!! We're they growing the cabbage themselves?!. None of the food was good. The agedashi tofu had a viscous batter & the sauce was not to standard. Tuna sashimi was metallic & watery. Squid pancake - no more than a small thin omelette with squid was way overpriced & the ginger pork was bland. I won't even start on the beef tatami. Don't go here. Go to Izumi, where everything is better & cheaper
MSG Foodie
Expensive - less than average.. Had an expensive lunch here on saturday afternoon but food was less that average.
Hanzo
Way too expensive for what it is.. I would understand if it was a 5 star experience but it was a 3 at best. I get better tasting and better servings from a cheap take away shop.. Thought I would try it because I'm new to the area. We got 10 pieces of sushi, chicken gyoza, x2 Katsu chicken (probably only 5 decent sized pieces) & chicken udon noodle soup which was extremely bland. All up it was $94 !!! Feel extremely ripped off for what it was. I can get the same quality if not better and more generous servings at my old local for about $45!! Not good.
Food 2 Run
Rated highly and I see why, great food really impressed..this place is a little gold mine...really great food

Spontaneous dinner here and service was great. Food was delicate but incredibly tasty. Pleasantly surprised by this little gem.

Our new favourite Japanese restaurant. Very friendly staffs. Consistently good , everything is so yum! I love their grape cider :)

3rd Dinner in a row. Just came in for a quick bite to try a new restaurant and have returned 3 times in 4 days! All food is excellent and served in traditional Japanese style with beers that are specifically ordered by restaurant. Love the Chiro beer
4people-every Wednesday
Best service I've ever had in Perth. Truly authentic Japanese hospitality. Best food outside of Japan and sake to match. Highly recommend!
Matt
I can't understand the bad reviews! The food and service were flawless. The price was more than reasonable. Can't wait until my next visit!

First of all, I was kinda expected that I would never be disappointed in Japanese restaurant owned by Japanese. But here is.....I have to say this place is the worst Japanese restaurant I've ever been in Perth! I mean staff were OK, friendly Japanese but FOOD!! We ordered Pork Fillet Katsu but we were served something thin(like a layered of thinly sliced ham) deep fry! Thin Fillet?? In my experience of Pork Fillet is not like a ham. Of course the other dishes were not nice obviously....Tempura was not crispy, too much batter, didn't know what it was under the batter.
Overall, arrangement of food, ingredient and price...If it is cheap then I could say "well that's ok cos it's cheap!" but IT IS NOT! Sorry I wouldn't go back...
Ely Delicat
Expensive lunch for little value and no yum factor. We got six or seven little dishes for lunch - tori karagee, salted chicken skewers, beef tataki, mini pork katsu, scallops in butter sauce and a salmon nigiri sushi. The katsu was tasteless and overcrumbed, the karagee too salty, the skewers were tender and succulent but again way oversalted. The salmon nigiri and tataki were nice - tataki was tiiiiny portions though! The scallops were sweet - could do with a bit of searing though - the butter sauce that accompanied the scallops was so good!
All in all, meh for a $65 lunch!

Dinner Party from Perth. Two serves of Tasting Plates, two mains and two serves of sushi rolls. Slow service as food took long time to come from kitchen. Restaurant is way over rated and food quality and serve sizes are disappointing. Left still hungry.
Sally
Amazing food. Went and had the small tasting plates. All the food was hot fresh and full of flavour. The staff were great food was fantastic. Would recommend to anyone who loves Japanese, love the idea of being able to try lots of different things :)
Average Diner
Disappointed. Sorry but really looking forward to our meal as love japanese. perhaps we should try again and order something else. had the tasting platters x 2 and a wine and regular beer- 83.00. where was the food? each platter had i half inch cube of tuna/1 scallop/ 4 skinny rings squid/ i teriyaki stick 3 small pieces chicken/ i tasty morsel of chicken karage and 5 beans and 2 teaspoons potato salad and 1 nori roll with soggy seaweed. all gone in 5 mins. If it was all exquisite it would be worth it but alas- it was not. Ordered a rice and miso each also and that filled us up-but rice was cold and clumpy . Did we complian.. never because the girls as so so nice.

Ate there last night. Chose the small plate menu, which is a lovely way to eat. We started with edamame beans and squid in ginger. After those plates were cleared we had curried potato croquettes and kimchee. Next we ordered chicken skewers and a vegetable sushi roll. All the food was lovely, particularly the squid and the vegetable sushi roll. We took our own wine, which was put in a nice bucket for us and we were given beautiful wine glasses. My partner also had two Japanese beers and our bill was $65.

There are also main meals on offer but we've never ordered them. The small plate experience is too good!
Ju
Quite disappointed with the food and service. The waitresses were very nice and friendly, but they focused too much on delivering the plates, not attentive at all and forgetful.
Ordered wagyu tataki as entree - took them an hour get the dish ready, served after we cleared our mains. Overly sour as well.
Assorted sashimi also took them 40 mins to cut?
Teriyaki fish was very tough and didn't seem fresh.
Thought this would be a decent Japanese restaurant, but honestly, quite disorganized and inefficient.
Foodie McFood
Fabulous! I can't believe I have not been here before now. Delicious food, fantastic service , amazing plum cider and a wheat free menu! A VERRY enjoyable experience. We will be back
MC Neets
Dissapointing. The customer service was adequate however the food was not authentic and most dishes were overly oily. The quality was not reflective of the price.
Angie
Decided to go here after a drink at the balmoral for what we thought would be a decently priced meal. Ordered the tasting plate for two, $20 each. I have never felt more hungry after a meal. The food is way over priced and nothing to brag about. Probably won't go back.
Sue Richardson
I love Senoji !!! Have been now 5 or 6 times and it never disappoints!! Beautiful fresh and interesting food and great service . Definitely will be back
Michael Hawryluk
Great meal, service and atmosphere. I read about Senoji on a top 100 restaurants in Perth article where it was named one of the top BYO restaurants.
The service to start with was some of the best I have experienced in Perth. The server even offered an item not on the menu based on our tastes.
The food was the best Japanese I've had in Perth so far with high marks for the sashimi, the wagyu tataki, miso soup and veg tempura. The high was a special salmon sushi roll made from different parts of the salmon and pickled onions. Outstanding.
All of this and you can eat in open air overlooking the albany highway strip.
We'll be back.

Great Food. I haven been living in vic park for so many years, but never wanted to walk in to Senoji as the outfit doesn't look attactive to me.

however, friends wanted to have dinner overthere, so i went in for the first time. surprisingly, the food was fastastic!!. never expected this kind of standard from senoji.

we have ordered prok belly with kimchee, tori karrage, scallop katsu, grilled beef tongue for entrees. the portion is very small to share among 4 of us, but the quality was really really good. also, we have ordered prawn tempura sushi roll, salmon n avocado roall and egg roll. the prawn tempura was so fresha dn crispy. and we have ordered bentayaki beef and shoya fish.

the dish waiting time is a little longer than i thought, espeacilly for the fish, but i think they would like to keep the high quality of the fish, that's why they only grill the fish when order comes in rather than pre made the fish. it's worth waiting anyway.

overall, a little bit pricing but compare to the service and the food, i am highly recommanded to go and try on a speacial occasion sometimes.
Bon Bon
Above and beyond. Great Japanese fare with a home-made feel. The owners and staff were friendly, and even went out of their way to make some personal favourites of mine that weren't on the menu! Definitely coming back.
Nibbler
Thanks to Coco and the team for another beautiful dinner. I love coming here and being welcomed like family, I wish I could come more often. Senoji provides the most homely service and atmosphere :) Absolutely the most understanding kitchen in preparing incredible vegan food; rather than feeling like an imposition, Chef goes out of her way. You must try the agadashi eggplant. :)
FoodNinja
Too sweet. Service is prompt and friendly. Pork gyoza were pan fried lightly and melt in your mouth. Squid pancake were a letdown though - not crispy and covered with a very sweet BBQ type of sauce. Would have been better with a spicy sauce. Salmon and tuna sashimi at $20 wasn't worth it. The fish slices were nicely displayed but was freezing cold and kind of icy so one can only assume it was frozen and was only taken out of the freezer before serving. Batayaki beef was dry and too thinly sliced. Almost became mince. Green tea came in teabags...not a sign of a good Japanese restaurant.
Noosa Foodie
A+ on all fronts. Price, taste and size as well as quick efficient service. Give it a go. A rare delight in perth!

Not a bad place at all. Was not expecting a great deal but it turned out to be decent. Simple no fuss japanese food. Highlight dish for me was agedashi egg plant
Adrian Cayley
Pleasant Lunch. We all ordered Bento Boxes of varying meat options. All happy with what was presented. Service friendly and efficient, no long waits on our visit. Used Entertainment Card so was very good value. Friendly family business so give it a try and decided for yourself.

I have not eaten a lot of Japanese food but I loved the food at senoji. I want to return soon to try more of their small dishes.
Mrs F
We waited over an hour for our were mains, and then I was fed but my husband waited another fifteen minutes for his meal and another few to get dome extra wasabi! The sushi itself was very average the rice wasn't sticky enough and by the end of the meal the soy sauce dish was filled with rice, something we have never experienced before. We were still hungry by the end of the meal and went across the road to Tao, it was much better!
D3iltan
The dishes are good but the rice is not good. It is not the sticky japanese rice and it fell apart when picked up with chopsticks. The price is slightly higher but they have foods that other restaurant doesnt.
I wouldnt want to come back unless they fix up their rice because there are many good restaurants with good price with good portion out here in Perth
Steve
Overpriced! Eat at Taka's kitchen. You get the same quality of food for much much lesser price.
Xiao Dong
Overpriced, bad food. Ordered assorted sushi plate. what a disappointment. the rice falls apart right away when we tried to pick up the sushi with chopsticks.

portion size was extremely small and yet the quality of food was pretty bad.

me and my gf spent over 60 bucks (we each ordered a drink) and we were still hungry afterwards

The food we got - eventually , after a LONG wait - was delicious. Sadly we had ordered two beef dishes only ti be told they had run out of beef at "8pm on a Saturday night! Overall the experience was disappointing but the dishes we did get we're scrumptious . Overall impression - mediocre!

We looked for a restaurant close to home, we couldn't decide where to go. It just so happened I was also booking some flights for a course I was doing at the same time, and I had a look at the "Eat" symbol on the QANTAS website. I searched Western Australia and only about 6 places came up. And wouldn't you know it, a place in Vic Park and it was Japanese... great work. And the bonus... for every $1.00 you spend you get 3 QANTAS Frequent Flyer Points. 5 of ate there for $120.00. You can BYO as well... 360 points ... Happy Days.... You have to stop yourself from buying food for the points. The food was good, the service was great... Great Service, Good food, you hand them two plastic cards and before you know your leaving the restaurant feeling great with a heap of genuine Frequent Flyer Points. We are off to the Red Cray next week. They are another place that does QANTAS Frequent Flyer points.

My partner and I both first time dined in here . We had the karaage tori chicken lunch set and the sashimi set . Both were so tasty and the sashimi was just so fresh . Will definitely come back and try more !!

Very disappointed - Won't be going back. Went to Senoji on Saturday night for dinner on a whim with my family.

We've eaten there quite a few times over the past year or so and have usually enjoyed it. Good food with slightly slow service but the food and company usually made up for that.

We had to wait for 40 minutes to have our drink order taken and we also ordered our meals at the same time (we'd had plenty of time to peruse the menu).
The waiter came back five minutes later and very politely asked if we'd mind having our entree and main meals brought out at the same time as they were busy. No thanks, we cancelled the entrees as we were very hungry by this stage.

Much later, the Tempura vegetables arrived alone and were quickly devoured by my teenage son. Then after another 10 minutes or so My Son's Terriyaki Chicken and my Udon Noodles arrived along with the rice for my son and wife's meal. No sight of my wife's terriyaki fish.

Nearly 10 minutes later my wife's meal arrived, by this stage her rice was stone cold. For somewhere that was concerned about bringing out two courses they managed to bring out three courses to our table.

My Udon noodles was very bland. Just a broth with boiled chicken and noodles. Usually there's much more ingredients in the soup the flavour was just from the chilli flakes I put on to the meal.

We'd passed many restaurants on our walk to Senoji but I insisted that we ate there rather than eating in a noisier packed out place - I wanted a relaxing meal. Senoji was loud, with poor service, poor food and was really expensive. I couldn't believe we were paying $4 for a glass of lemonade!

Nearly $90 for three meals and three drinks

Next time we'll try one of the other places and will pay a lot less.

My fave Japanese in Perth. I love Senoji and have been numerous times. The food ranges from the usual (sushi and teriyaki) to more authentic Japanese stuff that you wouldn't usually get (squid pancake, nattou, okonomiyaki) so you can be safe or adventurous. Be careful being adventurous with the nattou though... You can also go cheap (bowl of noodles), or slightly more high market (wagyu, teriyaki duck) depending on your budget.

The staff all seem to be Japanese students and many don't speak much English so dialogue can be an adventure and you can wait awhile for service. But that is part of the charm. They have heaps of different sake brands and you can buy a bottle for yourself, which they will put your name on and keep behind the bar for the next time you come for a meal. They've got some Japanese beer you don't find elsewhere either.

Not fancy, but quirky, interesting and with great food. The best middle of the road Japanese restaurant in Perth.

This place is great!. I really like this restaurant and was surprised to see the negativity in some of the reviews. The service is great, the staff are really friendly, and the ambience from the wooden decor makes the interior really cosy. I'd probably agree it is (only slightly) over priced for evening dining... But, the lunchtime specials are great value. Going for a lunchtime bento box with a pot of (really very nice) green tea is a great way to have a relaxing Sunday afternoon!

My boyfriend and I had a lovely Saturday lunch here. The fish was fresh and well prepared, and we tried most things on the menu! BYO wine. Service was great, but we were the only customers-which we didn't understand as we loved it.

Pricey, poor service & poor food. Staff do not have hospitality skills.
Sashimi was not fresh! Beef was tough!!
Thought the waitress spilt the miso soup on her way out. It's less than half a bowl. Miso soup no taste like from satchels. Rice too soggy. Tea took a long time to be served. Not recommended. Don't feel that good after the meal. Maybe it was the raw fish.

Must improve. Dined here last night with my partner in crime and we must say that we were disappointed. We shared some entrees including chicken gyoza, Tori Karaage & the mini Pork Katsu and whilst all were fair they just weren't great. Then had some tempura seafood (fish and prawns) and they were OK but the tempura was flaccid not crunchy like it should be. The worst part was the Batayaki Beef which was the worst dish I have had in ages. Horrible chewy bits of beef in a nondescript smelly sauce................I just couldn't eat it. They need to lift their game to compete with the new Kuza restaurant which is excellent.

Would return occasionally. Senoji offers what appears to be a fusion cuisine between Japanese and Korean food. I’ve eaten here a fair few times now and I find it to be very hit and miss- some dishes are fantastic and others verging on poor. What they do well is westernised Asian flavours, such as teriyaki. I find the authentic flavours are very lacking, in that some dishes (e.g. ramen) are very bland, but this is the case with most Japanese restaurants in Perth.Overall, a nice casual place to dine out.

Great service, tasty Japanese food. Will return.

Pretty yummy! Just need to add a bit more sauce to the katsu bento, other then that all good!

+ relaxing atmosphere + good food + sake tasting before buying (even small portions) + overall enjoyable evening out - more staff should be able to take orders - portion size should be bigger for the price paid

Very friendly waitstaff and lovely fresh Japanese food.

Ordinary food that was really overpriced. sat in the verandah part of the restaurant. dark and dank, got attacked by mozzies!! eeks. would not go back.

Disgusting!

We had a 'tasting' dinner and it was a horrible experience. We paid $50 each( ripped off) and we wouldn't have had a meal out of that. If it wasn't for the rice at the end I would have gone hungry.

Nadine O summed this place up quite well, although we didn't encounter any problems with being understood. Waitstaff were extremely polite and attentive and the food was pretty good considering the price. Clearly sake is something of a speciality there but unfortunately we'd not been planning to drink. Definitely arranging a skipper the next time we go there.

Great little spot. Had sashimi, pork belly in ginger, wagyu beef, scallops. All done to perfection. Only negative is that I didn't like the scallops being sliced thin.

Came here for dinner on Fathers Day, the place was full and busy. Once we arrived the staff were friendly and attentative...our table of 5 selected a number of small dishes to share...the food is tasty...the issues we had (which to the waiters credit he had warned us) was that the 2 owners are the only chefs and their restaurant style is expected to be slow. They serve each dish as its made so you wont get everything at once. I guess so you can talk and enjoy the foods. Anyways, the bigger issue was that there was only 1 waiter taking orders despite the 4-5 other staff members walking around. This apparently was done on purpose as the restaurant didnt want to stuff up and orders, so they had their main man only take orders. This was disasterous as you had to wait forever to order more food/drinks. Apart from that, everything else was good. Just odd only one person could take orders. Suggestion for others, order everything at once.

Enjoyable evening out. Had a light dinner here on a Sunday night. Food was pretty tasty in pleasant surroundings. Service was good. Nice mix of dishes on the menu, with the emphasis on ippinryouri (small dishes, of which you order as many as you like), which is a style of dining that I enjoy. It is moderately expensive, but I will go back.
Jenny
Very Enjoyable. Went for an early dinner with my husband & 15month old and had a really lovely time. Sashimi was fab as were our two mains. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere great & it was reasonable priced ... we will be back
Pris
A little pricey. It's a little more pricey than your average Japanese dining place in Vic Park. I hardly go but when I do, it's more for a drink to pair with a small meal with some friends than a typical "chow-down".

The food is good and fresh, service is polite too. It's okay for the price and value.
Chris Hastie
Great food, staff are attentive and knowledgable. Never had a bad experience here. Love the Sake tastings too!...
Mr Fussy
Overpriced, food very.... Look, this is very ordinary homey Japanese at best - it is not restaurant quality, and certianly not worth paying the prices they charge here for. You'd be far better off getting a takeaway katsu from somewhere else for a quarter of the price. Just because the owners are Japanese doesn't mean they know how to prepare good food. And as for having a bottle of sake reserved in your name - a smart way to get you to come back, isn't it?

Really Great food and service was friendly. Not the best ambiance but Cosy

We eat here all the time and both love Japanese. Not the cheapest nor most expensive restaurant around but the raw fish is always fresh and amazing quality. The staff complete the experience, always find them lovely.

Average Japanese. Being a huge fan of Japanese food, have always wandered past this place and thought I should give it a try. What put me off is although it's had longevity and been open for a while, it's never packed out like toto or even Christina's which made me sceptical about how good it would be.

Sure, it's run by Japanese people but the food has that 'homecooked' appearance and more importantly taste about it. That may appeal to some, but to me, it's the type of home cooking where they just nearly get the flavours right (and you so want them to!) but they fall short of delicious Japanese flavours.

The dishes we ordered skimped on the seafood, i.e scallops sliced so one is split into three, slightly burnt goyza's and overpowering dressing on the salad.

A nice enough experience but not one I'll be rushing back for...
