This has been on my bookmark for so long and I've finally had the chance to try!
We came at 3:30 so definitely didn't need to book. The place looked really homey, and like most of the Japanese restaurant on this side of town, it seemed to be owned by Koreans.
This did not compromise the freshness and taste in any way though.
We ordered the delux sashimi and tempera prawn sushi roll. The sashimi is fresh, flavourful and has a great variety. They have octopus and calamari which are uncommon to see in your neighborhood Jap restaurants. The cuts are thick and meaty.
The prawn sushi roll was a little lacking in flavour but was good value.
Sushi and sashimi deluxe is absolutely amazing š¤¤š¤¤
Great local sushi shop š
Only down point is that it is always busy and takeaway orders always exceeds the approximated time.
Customer service by the older lady at the cashier is very poor and rude, but food is undeniably good.
The best japanese restaurant u can get in Sydney. The fish is super fresh and friendly service unlike mainland Chinese restaurants which are dirty and have rude service. Hulu ya
Very fresh seafood and their sashimi was cut beautifully.
Small space and very strict on booking times, staff were only semi friendly and kept telling us what time we had to leave. Not a fan of being rushed out when we haven't even ordered food.
The wait was the downfall of this place, we waited pretty long to be seated as we had no reservation. We waited approx 40 mins for the food to come out which was pretty disappointing as we already waited quite long to be seated. Would deffs recommend making a reservation if you visit!
Large portion for reasonable price. Sashimi and sushi was pretty fresh, itās not cut or presented as nice as other Japanese restaurants Iāve visited but itās decent for a local spot in the suburbs. We also had a mixed tempura which was pretty nice too.
This is the perfect place to come to if youāre craving some good quality sashimi (and donāt mind splurging - prices are pretty steep). The sashimi were fresh and the salmon belly was massive!! Highly recommend sitting at the bar as you can see the chefs prepare the sashimi right in front of you.
Gem of a sushi spot for Sydney. Good range and variety of fish/seafood. Itās on the pricier end but well worth it. The owner is also very approachable!!
Nice little sushi bar in the corner of the korean side of Eastwood. Often very busy since itās small, so come a bit earlier or make a reservation for dinner. Service is average, often new waiters/waitresses who arenāt as attentive. The sushi is quite fresh, the obvious attraction for the dinner but donāt skimp out on some of the mains like the Yakisoba. Sadly, the more healthier cousin, Soba noodles, was subpar and lacking. The appetisers are your usual Japanese appetisers - not much to comment on that. If youāre into the Sushi boats, definitely come with more people to get the better upgrades, unless youāre simply willing to splurge.
Been coming here for close to 15 years now and itās just a clean and quality feed. You know itās never gonna let you down. For me I canāt go past the yakiniku beef roll. Their sashimi deluxe is also top notch.
One of the best whole in the wall sushi places that you will find in the burbs.
Great little sushi bar close to the station in the middle of all the Korean and Chinese restaurants in the area. Food was your standard sushi dishes without being too over-the-top and fancy, but was fresh and met expectations. Service was great and best to get here earlier or later, because it is so small it can be packed out quite easily.
Place never gets old! Love coming back again and again!
Love their soba! The sauce is the best in Sydney that I've had!
They also have sushi sets as well! Their sushi is well made!
Love this place and has been around since I was young! Good pricing:)
Authentic Japanese food that is fresh and efficient. It really feels like the real deal here. The staff and and chefs speak minimal English (which, I guess, adds to the experience) and they are behind the bar prepping the food. Itās good to see.
Itās a small place but has a simple Japanese feel.
Itās always busy. So you will have a limited time to be in and out.
This my in-lawās local Japanese spot. Simon chooses the fish himself from the fish market early in the morning and prepares the sushi himself. Food is always made fresh and priced well! Itās a small place so best to make a reservation beforehand.
This place is the only place in Eastwood you can get decent sushi apart from the sushi train on the other side.Ā
Everything is pretty fresh and the Sashimi is delicious. Go for the Sashimi platter, you won't regret it!
Beautifully fresh fish for a very affordable price, Hukuya is definitely our go-to Japanese restaurant within a 10km radius. Situated in a cozy shop on a corner of Eastwood, service is quick and it is regularly packed, so a booking is usually necessary for dinner. Dinner reservations usually last no more than an hour.
Platters are packed a-plenty with delicious sashimi (and sushi if you wish) and the takoyaki and soft shell crab are also good additions to your order. For something warm and soupy - udon, for something cool on a hot day - the cold soba; thereās really a meal for all kinds of days and moods.
Very fresh and delicious sashimi - thereās a large variety and the pieces are large. We also had the soft-shell crab - delicious. Price was reasonable. Udon and teriyaki beef was great too. Highly recommended. Itās only a very place though, I would recommend booking in advance, otherwise it may be difficult to get a table.
One of the best Japanese restaurants I've been to!
Hukuya is a cozy, traditional & delicious Japanese restaurant. I can't count the amount of times my boyfriend & I have been here & there is certainly a reason why - their food & hospitality is fabulous.
My personal favourites are the salmon nigiri, tuna nigiri and my ULTIMATE favourite dish is the teriyaki chicken roll, one of the best I've had... ever! The raw fish is fresh & sliced in front of you if you're sitting at the bar, and the chicken teriyaki roll is always warm & fresh. The chicken is flavourful with a bit of crunch, it's accompanied by a creamy slaw & a mild, creamy sauce drizzled on top. Delicious!
I would highly recommend checking this place out for your next sushi date or family dinner - but be sure to make a reservation ahead of time as it's always packed!
Hukuya is a really small and cozy Japanese restaurant that has been around for a really long time.
I ordered the sushi and udon set for $18 which was really cost efficient as you get to eat two different things for about the price of one hot dish on their menu. The sushi was tasty and the fish was fresh and buttery. The udon took a really long time to come out but was quite tasty, but didn't have much in it other than the noodles. Will probably come back to try other things on the menu!
Really fresh fish. The salmon belly and kingfish belly are amazing, delicious and buttery!
They are very large, which explains the high price tag
If I could give 6 star for their sushi, I will. Me and my boyfriend always order eels sushi, and the eels is x3 bigger than what we expected. The scallop sushi, omg, the scallop is so fresh and they melted in your mouth. Surf clam is nice and sweet and crispy. However I gave them 4 star because their sashimi set is limited and they close early (haha sorry but sometimes work ends late and I just wish that you guys open till late). Their agedashi tofu is just ok, not what I would recommend for $10.
Update: came here on a Friday night. They were super busy but still really friendly and helpful. We ordered sushi selection (picture) and it was amazing!!!! Eel sushi are so big and tasty. Salmon is fresh and huge slides. We special order a scallop sashimi, they charged $25 for 6 scallops (they cut in half so we got 12 pieces in total) which I think is weird because 1 scallop sushi is only $3.5 Anyway, it might be because we order something not on the menu so the price just came up randomly. But it worth trying!!! I wonāt complain.
Very nice sushi experience. We ordered āDeluxe Sushiā set for two people. It was $36 for 20 pieces.
I extremely like the cuttlefish one which was a little chewy and tasted soooo good and fresh. Sashimi slices were all at a great length that could cover the rice nicely. Iāve never seen any other restaurants offered such a generous portion of sashimi in Sydney before (take its wise price into account of course). Impressive.
Sushi is great for the price. Teriyaki fish is super salty. All in all food is value for money. BUT a big BUT is the service is terrible!!!! The korean waitress was rude and inattentive - no water or soy soy for sushi until requested and had to ask a few times for refilling water, turned around right after refilling on cup - hello three of us sitting at the table how abt the other two cups?! No thank u or goodbyes whatsoever at departure. Worthy a try but not a revisit.
Small and cosy place to eat in. We ordered a variety of sashimi and fried prawns and oysters as well. Everything tasted delicious. And the sashimi tasted really fresh. A must try when in the area.
A tiny little restaurant that's often quite busy - and for good reason! Consistently the freshest seafood I've had in Sydney. I'm more sensitive to raw seafood than the average person, but I've never gotten sick from eating here. All theirĀ dishes are also well proportioned and decently priced. Polite service is a nice bonus.
A restaurant not to be missed if you're in Eastwood, and honestly worth travelling out for too! Booking recommended
Went there on a Friday night and it was busy. We sat on the counter which reminded us of Japan - small and cosy. The sashimi is super fresh and priced at $24 which is quite reasonable. I do like the agedashi tofu although it is not the authentic Japanese tofu and wasn't as soft but I don't mind to have firm tofu. I will recommend the soft shell crab sushi roll. The crab was still warm and wrapped in warm rice as well. Crab wasn't oily too. It was the second time I ordered this dish and it is consistently good. We also ordered the California inside out roll but I am not a fan of this. Food was served reasonably fast. Overall I do enjoyed the food and will certainly be back again.
Favourite sushi restaurant in Eastwood. The food was fresh and the servings was generous. Make sure you have a booking as this little restaurant gets busy during dinner. The place has a homely decor even with the option to sit at the bar and watch the sushi master make your food.
Best sushi in Sydney hands down. Can't go wrong with any of their dishes. I recommend their soft shell crab roll, any of their sushi and hui dup bap (raw fish and rice with spicy sauce). Seriously amazing food and staff are super nice and attentive.
Was quite skeptical of a Korean run sushi bar and always used to wonder why this place got so busy, until one day I decided to give it a try and have been a regular ever since. The sushi here is extremely fresh and well made. A favourite of mine is their soba, which goes really well with sashimi/nigiri sushi. There are many great sushi restaurants in Sydney but this place stands out as one of my benchmarks.
Sushi is fresh and has a good ratio of rice and fish. Soy sauce used is also perfectly salty, but not overpowering. Value for money, and is a great local place to go.
The food was fresh, you get a strong authentic japanese feel towards the restaurant as well. It's very well priced and it has never disappointed me, service and food was great all the time
So here's a fact to start: I have never ever been disappointed by Hukuya. Without fail I know whenever I step in I will be getting great and friendly service and fantastic food.
The photos below reflect the numerous times I have visited and where do I even start... the soft shell crab is amazing and cannot be missed, and their sushi boat is best for anyone looking to set off the two great chefs behind the counter doing what they do best. But hey, you should be already planning your trip there to find your favourite for yourself.
It does get busy during the dinner rush so I like calling and booking ahead! Don't delay though because your new favourite sushi joint may just be a short trip to Hukuya away!
If you are looking for a good and reasonable place for sushi and sashimi, then this place will not disappoint you at all. I've been to many Japanese restaurants in the past and these kind of dishes are rather fresh and tasty. We always order the sushi and sashimi combo here. In all honesty, it taste better than some of the Japanese restaurants out there.Ā
Having said that, if you are after other Japanese cuisines such as bento box, teriyaki chicken, and even agedashi tofu, it's definitely not wise to order them here as they do not taste very authentic. We've order those dishes before and would not recommend it again.
After hearing really good things about this place, thought I'd pop by to see what the hype is all about. Ordered the deluxe sashimi ($21), takoyaki balls ($9) and the teriyaki chicken with rice ($15). The teriyaki chicken was delicious, however that's all.. it only came with the chicken and a bowl of rice, no miso soup no nothing, a little boring. Sashimi was extremely fresh and definetely a MUST if you visit this place, however customer service is where they go down hill and FIFO. As we came in before a larger group of people and my order came right after everyone else when we ordered first and also very similar things to the other table.
A very popular Japanese restaurant in Eastwood, so make sure you make booking before you go. It's owned by Korean, but they manage the restaurant really well. Sushi is great and freshly made. Teriyaki beef was delicious! Sashimi was also very fresh consider I haven't had such fresh sushi for a long time in a sushi shop! Highly recommend! Great value for your money spend!
Delicious authentic Japanese food in Eastwood.Their cold sobas are my personal favourite and are sold at a very good price. Staff are nice and the service was good. However the spacing was a little small so I had to wait for 10 mins for a spot with my family. Sashimi's are also a must try for the good price. Best Japanese place in Eastwood.
kiosks are abundant in shopping centres, sushi bars however are a small niche that seemed exclusive to high-end. Japanese restaurants. Finding Hukuya, a hidden gem in Eastwood was my. first step in my endeavoursĀ for sushi bar dining style.Ā . The first thing you need to know about Hukuya is. that you should most definitely
Great little establishment in Eastwood. Reasonable prices for dishes and friendly staff. Dishes were of excellent quality, enough so to remind me of my travels in Japan. Would recommend for a family dinner for four under $100
I frequent this place and I love it. Freshest fish you can find in the area with awesome service. Hot food isn't too shabby either but really, best sashimi!!
This place is one of my favourite sushi restaurants. Been a local here for over 15 years now and it still doesn't disappoint. I love that the sashimi is always served cold and that the size of the raw fish on the sushi is much larger than other places. I really hope this never changes! The sashimi is always super fresh as well. As an avid lover of sushi, this place is definitely worth a visit.Ā
The lunch sets are very reasonably priced too :)Ā
But make sure you make a booking before you go, especially in the evenings and on weekends because this place is always busy.
Absolutely Love this place. Fresh produce great staff and guaranteed a great feed for a reasonable price! id have to recommend the Cabbage salad.
I head to Hukuya in Eastwood for some fresh raw fish! I sit at the bar so I can see some of the sashimi and sushi action happening. I am eyeing off some of the big Sashimi boat platters that are being delivered. I order the regular sashimi platter ($21.50, top photo and below photo) which has 16 pieces of salmon, king fish and tuna. The sashimi is nicely sliced and taste very fresh.
Quite a Korean-Jap place, they even serve kimchi possibly because we ordered udon. Hukuya gets packed even on weeknights, and is a bit of a neighbourhood gem.
The sashimi is fresh and sushi tasty. Iād probably stick to these two when dining here, as the udon was standard and kara age chicken was so-so.
Service was quick albeit understaffed. I wouldnāt say Hukuya is super affordable, itās pretty normal sushi pricing which is never that cheap, but the quality is there.
My partner and i ordered a Deluxe Sashimi Boat and a Soft Shell Crab Roll and both of us agreed that they tasted pretty fresh and amazing!Ā
Although it's on the pricey range, in comparison to all the other 'Japanese' restaurants in Eastwood, it is definitely worth the price (at least for the two items we ordered, i can't guarantee the others dishes).
We would definitely come back again!
Sashimi is always good here - very fresh! Teriyaki oysters are good too! Other dishes on the other hand are pretty average and find its on the pricey side.
Also as there is limited seating you have to get their early or prepare to wait, unless you pre-book
We come here all the time for fresh, delicious Japanese food. It's a local favourite, and the service is always great. Our personal favourite is the tempura tuna roll, sashimi rice bowl, and the Teriyaki chicken.Ā
There seems to be a lot of disappointed and unhappy reviewers as they had high hopes for this place. I think it should be well noted that these guys serve traditional and comforting Japanese dishes, with great service and a cosy atmosphere.
Make sure you make a reservation during busy periods as the restaurant gets full quite quickly though!
Great atmosphere and amazing food. They do it simple and fresh and it always turns out well. Had the regular combo of sushi and sashimi and each piece of fish was fresh and delicious! It was my first time trying the cold soba which was refreshing although I prefer the hot alternative. Also, you can't go past the soft shell crab roll. Definitely worth the $18.
Hukuya is a gem of a Japanese restaurant in Eastwood. For the price point expect seriously fresh fish and an abundance of hot food that's also delicious. My picks are definitely for the sashimi boat and a hot steaming bowl of udon. The teriyaki chicken and beef make for a decent feed as well. Wish there were more places like this in the CBD.
Have been here several times. Last time was Monday night, which you would think is a quiet night, but this place is very popular! It's a very small restaurant so make a booking. The sashimi here is very fresh. We got the deluxe combination (around $40) plus soft shell crab roll. Tasty and prepared before your eyes.

You can find dozens of Japanese restaurants in Eastwood but this one is probably my favourite.
I have been a regular customer at this place for the past two years and every dining experience has been magnificent.
The sashimi is very fresh and you must give their hot dishes like the stir fried udon noodles or chicken terriyaki a try.
The staff are very friendly and warm.
I go here often and the food is always really good and fresh. Their sashimi is one of my favourite dishes as well as the tempura soft shell crab. Everyone that works there is really nice and friendly. The only problem is sometimes there's no seats available :(
Love the freshness of their sushi, friendly service and consistency each time i go.
I get the sashimi salad that normally has rice on the bottom, like a bibbimbab, but adding soba noodles instead tastes a lot better. Soft shell crab sushi rolls tasted great and their teriyaki chicken is on point.
They are always busy during dinner service so it is a good idea to book ahead
2/3/19 still loving their sushi
Some of the FRESHEST sashimi, and delicious udon// this little sushi bar is such a little gem. From the outside i didn't expect too much from it, but after trying it out.. I can definitely see why it's always packed. All their sushi is just so so fresh and their udon is some of the best i've ever had. My personal favourite dish from here is the seafood fried udon! A must try, it can be a tad on the salty side.. But it's something i can look past because it's just that amazing
The best sashimi in Sydney, prefer over the fish market, Simon and his family are very particulate with their sashimi, and make sure you order the soft shell crab roll, if going in groups always book 10 out of 10
You won't get such good quality sushi and sashimi at these prices anywhere else. Fantastic value for money and my favourite el cheapo sushi in the Eastwood area. Pls note that this rating is comparative to the price. Basically it's pretty darn good for the price (just don't go comparing it with soyko!) :)
Now how they can get their sashimi and sushi fish so fresh will forever be a secret to me. Anyone that comes for lunch or dinner must try their fresh sashimi. You will never think of sashimi the same again.

Best sushi and sashimi in the area. For true sushi-sashimi-nigiri lovers, the taste and variety is nothing spectacular, but the quality is consistent and fresh.

Arghhh uni has started and the amount of draft posts is piling up on me. Was really craving sushi one week so I grabbed my friends and urbanspooned this place in Eastwood, perfectly situated just opposite the train station on the "Korean" side. Although, this dinner wasn't very filling for us, someone made us have a $90 budget which we fit in, but I would say ordering the same amount of dishes as people would really fill you up.
Hukuya Restaurant is the most popular Japanese Restaurant in Eastwood. Located right by Eastwood Station, Hukuya is always full so you should book a reservation. There are other great Japanese BBQ restaurant and hot dishes on the other side of the Eastwood station but Hukuya is the place for Sashimi in Eastwood.
The food was really nice and fresh. We ordered a alot of sushi... ...and a Sashimi Boat!
My favourite Japanese in Sydney. Have eaten at Hukuya nine times over the past two years and it never fails to impress. Freshest sashimi and sushi that melts in your mouth. Also love their karage chicken with udon. Cosy and cute, make sure you book because it fills up fast!
Very fresh sashimi and sushi!!
I have been to this place for many years because of the fresh sushi that this restaurant always offers. The simplicity and the freshness of the sushi is what makes this restaurant unique. It is not a complicated sushi restaurant with so many favours in one dish. But rather simple, fresh, quality sushi. Environment: Feels like home. Staff are the same and have always been the same for many years since I came which is always a healthy sign.
Some restaurants are too much rice and very little sushi. But this restaurant has a balance of both sushi and rice. Best sushi restaurant ever!
I have been coming here for 9 years now. I always have the standard sushi and udon. My gf has the teriyaki chicken and hosomaki. This is the best Japanese I have ever had. I've tried to find places that are the same due to the $$ but haven't. The food is just amazing, fresh, flavoursome...I can go on. Must try!
My Favourite. I came there so many time that the owner even remember me. When I saw the restaurant first time, I didn't expected much from them because of the simple deco look. But then the food is just outstanding. So I can't stop myself from return this place. The owner is very nice, he even offer me and my friend some free dishes because we are regular customers. For someone come here the first time, I would recommend their cold soba noodles, one of the best.
Best sushi place in Eastwood!. What more can you ask for with fresh sushi and excellent service! Give the cold soba a try if you like cold noodles and the salmon just melts in your mouth! Love it!
Love this little gem for Japanese. The sashimi is always fresh and the cold soba noodles are 'bitey' and come with a great dipping sauce.
The best sushi place in the world; well at least in my world. This place has been my favorite eat out place ever since I was in preschool ! The freshness of this place is amazing and although the price is a little high, I personally believe ever penny is worth it.
Amazing!. Simply the best sushi/sashimi I've had so far.
I really love the freshness and generosity of their food and servings in this Japanese restaurant. Too bad the place is just tiny and thereās always a long cue in here. Itās better to book it ahead if you plan to eat here.
This place is amazing!!
If you are in need of a sashimi and sushi fix this is the place that will wow and amaze.
The proportion sizes will put Sokyo to shame as the cuts are generous beyond belief.
The sushi and sashimi here is top quality on par with some omakases. We got a seat by the bench and the chefs were preparing everything right in front of us.
Definitely go for the sashimi boat and the miso as you won't be disappointed. Very generous large serving of wasabi and ginger to help you tackle the sashimi boat.
Definitely coming back to this place for my Japanese fix. Do note its a one hour seating time only.
Best sashimi, sushi, rolls, noodle ever.. This was my third time to eat here, and all time was so great! And there are always lots of people inside of the restuarant, so make sure to book before you go here!
Consistently decent sushi at an okay price. They also serve sushi with higher end ingredients like ikura or uni.
Pretty fresh and tasty. Not a wide selection of fish and a little pricey at $53 for the deluxe combination platter
New 2022 update: this place still serve best sushi around the area. Services still very good and food quality still top notch.

2018 review:
This place serve the most fresh sushi in Sydney!
We come here all the time to have sushi, their sushi are cut and put together when you order. Not like sushi trains out there. These guys are also serious about their sushi. We always find their fish very fresh.
We also like their cold soba and teriyaki chicken or teriyaki fish here.
The service is excellent, the owner recognise us already and always give us a very welcome smile and make sure we are looked after.
This place is not big and since the food is very nice, it tend to be full most nights. So booking is essential.
Highly recommended.
I don't come here often but when I do, the sashimi is always fresh. They consistently provide great food. It can get busy in the evening so recommend booking in advance.
