Review Torin Japanese Restaurant - Eastwood

Sarah Liu
The atmosphere of this restaurant is very clean and relaxed, loved the decorations. The service was very good as well. We ordered the garlic pork ramen and it was OK, although it looks great the egg was a bit too salty and the broth was quite plain. The spider roll on the other hand was quite nice, i would suggest ordering sushi from this place.

Love this Japanese restaurant in Eastwood. It’s my go to restaurant around this area. The staff are friendly especially the owner he always has a polite conversation with my partner and I, the sashimi and sushi is always super fresh and good quality.

Really enjoyed the ramen. Soup was full flavoured. You can taste the ginger in the Karage chicken, which most shops you don't. Would definitely come back to try other stuff.

Good service, fluent english speaking waiter probably makes this place more comfortable amongst English only speakers. Price was moderately expensive, grilled salmon roll was great! Fresh sashimi with the bento box.

Sushi rolls were very yummy. I was disappointed about the main dishes though.

Only one of the two Japanese restaurants in this side of Eastwood. Need more patron. Food is nice for family and friends gathering.

It was not too bad. My daughter enjoyed meal. However all plates meals was really simple and not interesting. Espectially plain Udon.

Food is below average. Atmosphere is ok and attempts to express the culture. The price is quite ridiculous for its quality and quantity. Warning. The large sized meals are actually small-medium sizes when compared to normal Japanese restaurants. We ordered a large mixed tempura set which was almost $30. Expecting to get a wide variety of tempura to share with the family, but it consisted of 4 prawns, 4 small sweet potato slices and 2 calamari..... The sashimi/sushi doesnt smell. But it is mushy and too soft/seemed stretched. I'd say it would be decent if this restaurant was a cheap fast food store.

Went to this place on Sunday night. Excellent service. Very friendly owner. Very delicious Aburi Sushi and tempura. Will come back next time.

I strongly discourage others from dining here. I went here with my mother and we ordered a $85 sashimi large set (apparently for 2-4 people, from my experience it's for 2 people). As there was such meagre proportions of sashimi for the price, I felt scammed and furthermore the food quality was poor as it did not taste fresh. It kinda ruined our night and I wouldn't go there again.

weird jap restaurant, serving half Japanese half Korean food. Food quality is below average, service is minimum, do not come back nor recommend

I rate restaurants based on the following: 1star, I will never go back there even it is free, I will not waste my time with one star places. 2stars, it’s not great, average food, I would go back there if it was free. 3stars, I would go back there, the food is reasonable considering value for money. 4stars, I sometimes crave the the food and will go back there because of the quality, price and service. 5stars, it’s my favourite places, my first choices to dine out. By far it’s the best for your taste buds and pocket!

Went there with friends and family on a Friday night. Ordered a mixed seafood hotpot, waited 20 minutes paid $49 was given a few pieces of fish, mushrooms and some tofu. Rest of my table ordered other dishes, which were also small and sub par quality. Do not recommend 👎🏻

Upon entering we were greeted by a very attentive man- whom I presume is the owner? The service here is very vigilant and prompt.
We felt slightly underdressed for this restaurant- the ambience had this low-key, ancient Japanese teahouse vibe to it!
The menu is basic, but appetising Japanese food- also Korean. I recommend trying the salmon salad.

Tried this place, after craving Japanese food and looking for a local place with a friend. Stumbled upon this, which was new to us. Greeted by a rather old man (appears to be the manager?), and who gave a lot of attention to us. Place was not too busy for a Sunday night, definitely good place for a normal conversation without having to shout or keep your ears peeled.

Ordered the chicken katsu don ($15.5) which was a little on the pricey side for a katsu don. Had the spider roll for $17.5, and fine, this was definitely pushing in price. The taste was average, nothing special. I felt the serving in the sushi was a little smaller than expected however. Food also took quite a while to prepare despite not too many people. Did like that the man at the cashier asked if 'everything was ok?', seems to at least show some desire for critical feedback to improve!

As soon as we walked into Torin Japanese Restaurant, we were greeted with 'annyeonghaseyo', another Japanese restaurant run by Koreans in Eastwood. The man who greeted us was very friendly and attentive to us during our meal.

We ordered a Grilled Sushi Plate, Una Don, Soba and the Creamed Grilled Corn. I was a little sad when the Grilled Sushi Plate came out with only salmon and kingfish, and no scallops (the picture on the menu displayed all three types on the plate). The Una Don was the least favourite, the eel seemed quite overcooked as it was very chewy, a texture similar to calamari when it is overcooked. The soba and creamed corn dishes were pretty good, although it's not hard to do those well. Overall not a terrible restaurant but I prefer Hukuya down the road for fresh sushi, sashimi and soba.

The reason I remembered this restaurant well was for two reasons - 1) this was the only Japanese restaurant on this side of Rowe street while every single other shop was Korean; 2) the moment I pushed the door open with my partner at the time, all the eyes landed on him as he was the only token white person there. It was amusing the way they stared at him, I had good laughs at his expense! The food was typical standard Japanese food. I had tempura udon which was good - broth was tasty, tempura was crispy, and udon noodles were chewy. My partner had bento box with a bit of everything. Sashimi tasted fresh. We couldn't really faulty it and it was reasonably price. It wasn't kind of place you visit for special occasion but it was ok for midweek quite dinner.

It seems to be a norm in Sydney for Japanese restaurants to be owned by Koreans. Maybe it's the overlap in cultures, or maybe they just want to try something different - either way, no judgement as long as I get my fix when I walk in.

At Torin, the best thing I can say about it is that I didn't not get my fix. Sure, they deliver the most basic level of what you'd expect (which is more than I can say for some places) but nothing more, and fairly overpriced, as is many things on this side of the station.

The menu doesn't have that much variety either, and the service, whilst polite, wasn't particularly friendly or welcoming.

And with the restaurant empty most times I walk past it, I really wonder how they stay in business at all!

I've had better Japanese food in the area for a better price. Not quite worthwhile for a "meh" experience.

food is decent, not great but its not bad. the owner is friendly and the food is fresh, the service is good but the pricing is a little expensive. we've been here 4 times and each time it hasnt been too bad.

The food at Torin is nice but nothing special in my opinion, but are presented really nicely. The dishes are fresh and quite tasty and is a great place to go for a quick lunch. They have a number of lunch sets that aren't too expensive and have quite abit to them. I would say the rest of the menu is quite pricey in comparison to places like sushi hotaru (where sushi plates are $3.30 each). 6 takoyaki balls costed me $8 alone.

I would say if you do want to this place, go during lunch so you can grab one of the sets.

A quick lunch stop after a few hours of shopping in Eastwood, Torin's menu lured me in. The food was fresh, well presented and affordable. A must try if ever you are in the Eastwood area.

At first, I was excited to finally eat here again but after the food came out…I was filled with disappointment. It’s been around 10 years since I’ve last set foot in this restaurant and I doubt I will come ever again. The meal portions were SMALL! We ordered a seafood & udon hot pot for 3 people and a sashimi & chicken set… Still hungry…even after paying $51 for the whole meal.

The service was really friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was spacious, relaxing and comfortable. The food was on the whole, just average, a bit overpriced and not that generous with the serving sizes. If you’re after some good Japanese food, I’d say there are better choices.

Food was good but manager has poor attitude and as result we will not be back. We ordered a lunch menu which included sone sushi and an udon. We asked if the udon could be vegetable as my partner is allergic to shellfish. We thought this was organized but when the udons came out they were both seafood. At this stage still ok as it was probably just a communication misunderstanding between ourselves and the waitress. However when we asked the manager ( she brought out the udon) if we could change to vegetable it was quite obvious that she didn't care. She simply stated that it was not available with lunch menu and walked away. It's not like we were asking for a higher value item. Then the original waitress came back and asked if wanted to buy another vegetable udon. No was the answer. Quite frustrating as we eat in this area all the time and the other restaurants would at least apologize for the mix up regardless of who's error it is the restaurant has a responsibility to treat each customer with respect and this was far from what happened today. It's not about the money it's the principle. Very Disapointed. will not be back.
