Service was good. The meat dish we ordered was delicious, but the fish dish was a bit disappointed; I guess always go with the meat dish would be fine. However it was a little too pricey, consider the portions were just ok. Might come back and try something else, then update my review.

Horrible restaurant. There is a A fly in the hot drink. And I ask the staff for my lunch after ordering 30 minutes. However, they didn’t even order my meal. Never back again.

Honestly I've been here so many times and the food never fails to impress me 😜😜 The taste is authentic without being over the top, and they're consistent with service as well!

The food was ok but the service was horrible. They accidentally gave us a dish which we didn’t order then tried to charge us and was rude when I tried to plan what happened. I will not go back.

Bianca: So I’m currently obsessed with dan dan noodles and have been on the hunt for some of the best in Sydney. I don’t know how far I’ll get with this search because I can’t go beyond the amaze Dan Dan at 257 Home Kitchen. 257 Home Kitchen specialises in Shanghainese cuisine, the Sheng jian bao are repeat favourites. I cannot express just how much I love this restaurant! Definitely, one of the more modern restaurants on the Eastwood strip, competing with the recently refurbed Taste of Shanghai. I’ve probably visited 6 times in the space of 2 months.

Love the food, decor and service here...

I am actually typing the review in the restaurant right now as the food are soooooo delicious here... will definitely come back!

Rate 1 star cuz I can't rate 0. We cancelled the fried beans with soy sauce cuz they are not fully fried and salts are still stick on it.There s not a single salted pork in salted pork soup.Expensive dishes but WORST EXPERIENCE EVER

Fresh noodles, quick service and tasty dishes. My friend Cass was going on about these Dan Dan noodles, so she dragged me here while I was starving. I was really craving wonton noodle soup, but some reason they can arrange that at this restaurant... So still opted for the noodle option with Pork and vegetables. The Xiao Long Bao was also very nice, I am still a fan of Din Tai funs or my sister in laws hand made. Nice cosy atmosphere, clean and family friendly.

I actually hardly come to Eastwood, so didn't know this restaurant existed. Came here with relatives for some Shanghainese food. This place is well lit, clean with modern decor, and staff were quite attentive. Not gonna lie, I don't really eat Chinese food out since I feel like places aren't really clean, in terms of food/table stuff.

This is recommended by many of my friends. I’m surprised by how neat and clean it is, compare to other restaurants. We enjoyed all the dishes, especially the mud crab! All are yummy and not as greasy as usual Chinese cuisine. Sure would visit it again!

Quite nice Chinese food. Good noodles and dumplings. Can get very busy at times, Long waits are not unusual. Also the interior can feel quite cramped

Must’ve been one of the most disappointing Shanghai cuisine I’ve had. Not long after returning from Shanghai, we came here for lunch. The entrance was tiny and not a welcome to be heard. Interior was similar to cheap counterparts in Shanghai. Staff were slow to respond when we called for them.

Fried buns rushed out of the kitchen, upon closer inspection I could see the plaited patterns of a steamed buns. Not only was it bought, the fluffy bun skin will soak all of the juices from the filling. Xiaolongbao was likely bought as well, it’s skin was thick and filling had too much ginger. The fish had a thick floury coating and it just absorbed too much of the concentrated tomato sauce. This restaurant doesn’t represent Shanghai cuisine at all.
Not bad and gives Taste of Shanghai a run for their money which is just down the road! The taste and authenticity is there, and modern clean looking dining experience. The staff seem friendly and attentive which is always good in an Asian place! Will be back to try more dishes on the menu.

Staff tends to recommend you the expensive dishes, while they are being cooked poorly. The restaurant claims to be Shanghai style but the actual dish we ordered don't really taste like that (compare to Taste of Shanghai), we feel it is a mixture of Cantonese+Vietnamese. Furthermore, the restaurant is very noisy when it's full. Overall, it's not recommended.

A great casual Chinese restaurant specialising shanghai dishes. The dining ambience is very clean and modern, attentive staff and the food is really good. The shanghaied pan-fried buns are fantastic and a must order! The price is decent, too!

I was extremely disappointed with the service at this restaurant. The cutlery and plates were greasy and felt like they were not washed thoroughly. The level of hospitality I was given by the staff was one of the worst I have ever received. Not only did the staff not smile or greet us, they acted in a very rude manner. Additionally we were asked to leave the restaurant in the middle of our meal to seat a larger group. As a result of this the quality of the food, restaurant ambience, and other factors were insignificant. Would not recommend this place.

The staff here are very rude, disrespectful and don't understand or speak english properly so it was very hard to communicate with them. The restaurant itself looks clean but the plates were dirty and greasy. The food was okay though but i will not be returning as the service was horrible.

We had the Cumin Lamb, friend dumplings, jelly fish salad and the tofu with egg yolk. Yums x4!

Word of advice the weekend- book ahead or you will get turned away.

I saw the poor wait staff reply: "Please don't yell at
me - I only work here (I'm not the boss/owner) to a rather nasty 'walk-in' customer. 😳

A great shanghai style restaurant. The staff are friendly and happy to help. The food servings are generous and taste fantastic. Very neat and clean.

Favourite place for Chinese in Eastwood! Menu offers a wide selection of authentic Chinese dishes, food is always cooked to a consistent standard - also love the modern decor and interior design of the place.

Favourites are the dan dan noodles ($12.80), fried noodles with yellow chives and pork ($13.80) and pan seared pork dumplings ($9.80) - so delicious! Also really love the barramundi with vermicelli and tofu soup ($40.80).

Often very busy on Friday-Sunday nights so would definitely recommend booking!

You have to arrive here early to secure a table but that's no guarantee of value for money - nice decor, quite clean but food was so-so and quite expensive - for these prices one would expect better, service very ordinary, dirty plates not removed after each course, had to ask continuously for the tea and water glasses to be refilled and of course a surcharge for using a credit card; we won't go back.

If it makes it easier,
257 Home Kitchen is on
257 Rowe st,Eastwood

Follow where the lines to get in is usually a good indicator of a good restaurant but that thinking failed me once in Burwood

This time I'm not sure 🤔 what to think of this theory

At least we didn't feel cramp in here and the waiter keep coming to fill up our water glasses

The wait for the food was spread out.

The drunken chicken came out first, the others in my group said this is organic chicken as it's a little tough,it had bones with it. I felt like it has a hassle eating this tough chicken and trying to eat the little bits of meat stuck to the bone and bones just made me lose enjoyment from this dish. It's a shame because the stronger flavour (than other places) is a nice change and I wouldn't get this again

The lamb cumin, though there was a chilli 🌶 picture on the menu wasn't that spicy which is a good thing. Cumin and lamb go together and this dish shows why! The blend of flavours with the onion is a must try dish though a little oily

I was expecting more from the boiled dumpling,it was just a bit too plain for me.
The pan fried dumplings were a little better

The stir fried bean sprouts with mushrooms was nice though not much mushrooms in the dish

Prices are more than other similar restaurants

We did look around and people were ordering the fish and hotpot, maybe we should of chosen those dishes

A bit of hit and miss here

I'm not sure what to do here so will give a neutral review. The good: they have the best spicy pork and bamboo at $20, better than other local sichuan restaurants. BUT!!! last night i paid $40 for tofu and crab... i don't know what to say ... it was only silken tofu with seafood sauce... where was the crab??? $40... and a small container - i was blown away and just felt like i was part of a horrible con job, ruined my night. All night family was laughing at me for losing money on a $4 packet of tofu.... there might have been a funny side to it but i just wanted to go to the shop and flip some tables!!!

Also i got a container of vegetables, it was half full - tiny tiny portion and that also cost $18 something. I have been to every place in eastwood and every shops vegetable dishes were far cheaper and double the size. The people here just want to make money, some of the food is good BUT management are money hungry beyond reason.

BE CAREFUL if you're willing to spend $60 on half a box of vegetables and a small box of tofu in seafood sauce for $60 then this is the place to come!!! If you can't tell, i'm still feeling stung in a horrible way from my last experience here, so after reliving this experience i'm giving them a 1. Please ignore this shop until they make their servings and prices reasonable.

Booked a table for 17 people - restaurant said it was fine and that they will provide me two tables as they cant fit 17 people on one table. Reconfirmed the number of people on the day of the booking.

When we went to the restaurant, i told them the booking details and was simply ignored by the staff. No one notified me that I had to wait for the table to be cleared (as there were people finishing up their food). Afterwards, they tried to put 17 chairs to one table (which completely did not fit). I advised them that I was told I would be provided 2 tables. They accused me of changing my reservation from 11 to 17 people when this was not true. And that the number of bookings were impossible.

They then provided two separate tables in the end but the tables were far from each other.

other than that, food was good but service was appalling. would not recommend for large groups (8+ people). probably wont be coming back

Don't be fooled by the reviews from non-Chinese people, this place is second to none for their 100% authentic shanghainess cuisine. The soup we had taste exact as how I'd expect it to taste had we ordered it in Shanghai. The sweat and sour fried fish (not its proper English name) was devoured within 10 mins. The pork bun had a thin crust and a juicy filling. Hardly had time to take photos before the food disappeared. Next time I will definitely visit with a larger group so we can order more dishes.

Really liked the pan fried pork buns. The bread on the top was super soft and fluffy and the bottom fried bit super crunchy. It was so much nicer than other Shanghai restaurants I've eaten at. Enjoyed all the other dishes too (prawn in salty egg yolk, fried pork chop, Barramundi in sweet and sour sauce). It's pretty typical Chinese type food (no twists or deviations from classics) with the typical minimal service of restaurants in Eastwood.

It's a popular Chinese restaurant in Eastwood. I used to quite like this restaurant, because it serves pretty good food. However, I was a little disappointed with the quality of food. The braised OX tail with red wine is too salty. The stir fried mixed veggies with fungus is relatively blend. The Iive Barramundi soup with vermicelli and coriander is okay, but the soup is less rich than before. One thing that I liked from the four dishes is the green soy bean with rice wine sauce.
For the four of us, we ended up paying around $27pp for this meal.

Specialising in Shanghainese food, very clean and nice decor. The restaurant is always busy and takes 2 booking sessions, one at 5.30pm and one at 7.30pm, make sure to book as I saw people get turned away. The food was quite good, we ordered the sweet and sour pork, cumin lamb, steamed cod and green sprouts, all great. Prices are higher than many chinese places, expect $80ish for 4 dishes. But overall great settings and food.

One suggestion is they leave a bottle of water at every table as a waiter was carry lemon water around and had to keep going back to refill every table.

Poor service. The lady has no idea what we want. Bad management for sit arrangements. No idea how their reservation system work as it is terrible. Food is okay not the greatest. The manager is very rude and unhelpful. I feel this is the worst dinning experience I got from a restaurant.

Great restaurant! Pan fried pork bun and anything related to chicken are my favourite! Strongly recommend everyone to come to this place to have a try.
GymEatSleep
Not bad for a small group catch-up, like the salty egg yolk prawns and the braised fish. Overall all food we had on the night were a bit sweet as being typical Shanghaiese cuisine.

This restaurant has an extensive menu of Northern Chinese cuisines. Everything we've tried from this restaurant has been tasty. Their pan fried pork buns are nice and juicy inside with a nice crunchy bottom, which was yummy!!

Service was ok when we were there, but they don't attend to you unless you ask. But I guess most Chinese Restaurants are like that.

Restaurant is new, therefore it's nice & clean.

Overall, we had a good experience & will be back.

Great Place for Bad food and Free Passive Smoking.
The expectation of eating dinner out on a Friday night is usually met with a relaxing, enjoyable experience.

If you think that's what you're going to get at Home Kitchen, dream on.

Scum service left us waiting out in the cold for over 5 minutes while staff just gazed at us like we were aliens from another planet. At this point I really should have just cut it short then and there, however we persisted.

We were seated directly in front of the door which normally, doesn't bother us however considering that they seemed to also be offering passive smoking on the menu, it wasn't pleasant.

We ordered the pickled fish soup which tasted like someone had taken about 12 lemons and just juiced them over some fish. Now I do understand that it is supposed to be sour, but it is also supposed to be edible.

It doesn't get any better from here either. The crispy pork we ordered was raw and the milk tea was like hot water and brown powdered milk.

After informing the staff, all they seemed to give a shit about was that we knew we were going to be charged and extra $2 for paying by card.

Do yourself a favour and walk to any other Chinese restaurant in Eastwood and have a comfortable, affordable and tasty dinner.

Came here with the family for our Sunday dinner. The sweet and sour pork was nice and the prawn with salted egg yolk did not disappoint. The rest of the dishes were pretty standard though and the crispy skin duck had barely any flavour to it which accentuated the fattiness of the skin.

I was one of those people who was attracted to this restaurant because of its popularity. It offers unique style of Shanghai Northern China type of food. I have tried its special lunch menu and like the braised pork with rice. I also like the smoke fish as a cold dish. But you need to be very careful because it has a lot of bones. I sometimes wonder when you can have smoke fish fillet instead of smoke fish.

Service: 7/10
Food : 7/10
Ambiance: 7/10
Value for money : 7/10

We decided to stroll the streets of Eastwood hoping to find a new place to dine. We stumbled onto the busy Home Kitchen and since it was booming with diners, we too waited.

WifeOfSnackingBear loves her rice so we ordered a dish of Yangzhou Fried Rice. Yangzhou Fried rice is a very popular wok styled dish cooked with day old rice, diced pork, shrimp, egg, scallions and some vegetables. The oils and aroma brings the rice dish over the line despite it being slightly dry.

We tried their Pan Seared Pork Dumplings. Many customers seem to be having the Pan Seared Pork Buns instead but from my experiences I've never been too much of a fan due to the thick casing. It tends to shadow the meat inside. Unfortunately I felt the same way about their dumplings... the dumpling skin seemed too thick though the fault was slightly masked in the beautiful crunchy base.

I didn't like the lack of sauce on the table to mix your own concoction but instead a premixed version comes out. I couldn't be bothered asking for chilli sauce as well, since the waitresses seem too busy trying to get more people in.

A nice tall glass of Traditional Wintemelon Tea to pair with the meal seems like a good choice. I just wish it was more on the colder side.

From the outside it can be a bit confusing on how the system works. You need to get a number, which is normally given by one waitress, then you have the option to wait in small seating area by the door or outside in small groups (which shall add further chaos to people trying to dodge their hungry diners). No-one really greets you at the door as the place seems very understaffed. A few customers rocked up, looked inside, couldn't understand where to get a number and left... and we nearly did too until I had to go in and initiate a conversation with a staff member.

I noticed that a lot of patrons ordered their Traditional dishes to share with rice instead of our ordering technique. Maybe we made a bad choice there. The experience wasn't as impressive as we'd hope.. stumbling onto a hidden gem tucked away on the quieter side of Eastwood but packed with people in the know... maybe a revisit is in order to tackle the menu differently.

worst service ever!wait for 1.5hours and told us cannot order because they are reservation only!
Horrible restaurant! There are so many tables available.

Coming from a country like Singapore, I’ve been taught from a very early age to trust a queue. That is, if there’s a queue outside a restaurant, they MUST be good. Cause all these people can’t be wrong, right? Especially in an Asian-heavy suburb like Eastwood: if I’m hungry and there are people queueing out the door of 257 Home Kitchen, it should be a safe bet that we’ll have a good dinner.

Good value for money, you get alot for your money. Quite busy place, recommend booking a table for 3+ people. I enjoyed dim sims alot & drunken chicken. Quality eat for Eastwood standard's

This is the first time we’ve heard of a Chinese restaurant enforcing two sittings at dinner time. We’re kinda glad they do because otherwise you’d never score a table - even with a booking. Locals have jammed this Eastwood newcomer, dishing up Chinese fare with an emphasis on Shanghai cuisine.257 Home Kitchen looks more like a hip cafe – exposed brickwork, copper pendant lighting and bentwood chairs – but the menu is serious, with 120-plus dishes proving there’s more to Shanghai cuisine than xiao long bao soup dumplings.

Very poor service. We let the waitress know that we were ready to order, but she just waved her hand at us to tell us to wait. Then she went to serve a family that just walked in. We tried to get her attention again when she finished but she just waved her hand at us...are we not customers too?

As with the food, we've tried a few of their dishes (e.g. stir-fried noodle with shredded pork and vegetable and ma po tofu) and find that they are very salty.

I really like this place. The food is delicious and authentic and the menu is broad so plenty to choose from. The atmosphere is fresh and feels similar to a modern cafe. Food comes out quickly. I found the prices very reasonable and the serving sizes very generous.
It's CAKe Time
It looks like a contemporary casual restaurant with its bright lights, brick wallpaper and window panes. It does feel like you’re eating at a communal home, which is what the restaurant name suggests. It suggests homely food that has been passed down from generation to generation. But when you open the menu, you’ll find that the dishes are quite pricey for what is supposed to be home cooking. It’s actually fine dining disguised in its casual atmosphere. The menu is predominantly inspired by the Shanghai cuisine but does have influences from other parts of China. We ordered a classic Shanghai cold dish to start us up.

Awful. Once I ordered the food, I had to wait a WHOLE HOUR for the food to arrive. I am very disappointed with the waiting time between meals. The food is quite average and not worth the wait, there are many other better Chinese restaurants around Eastwood. When I decide to eat out because it is a fast and convenient way to satisfy my hunger however if I knew it would take this long for wonton, I would've stayed home and cooked.

A trendy looking atmosphere; the 257 has wooden tables and white brick walls with black and white motifs and a nice clean "homely" feel that looks like a modern restaurant of any cuisine, not specifically your usual stereotypical Chinese at all. The staff are quick on their feet and different plates of food keep by-passing our table as we settle down in the middle of the restaurant after they had sought-after a seating point for our family of four. It was an awkward fitting for us, as we were smack right in the middle of the walkway and the seating was myself and Mr. Tickle on both ends, and Mr. Chatterbox and Mrs. Helpful seated on one side. The table near us were served milk bottles in shiny coloured ice boxes which intrigued us. At first we thought it was iced chocolate, but the waitress informs us it is Hong Kong-style Milk Tea. We order two; it's super milky and tea that's strong in flavour served cutely in a old fashioned milk glass bottle each. We ordered this barramundi fish for our main course - a sticky sweet and sour fish that has been semi de-boned and deep fried in a fanatical kind of shape. It's quite a signature looking dish and was interesting to pick at it with an accompaniment of pine nuts and peas with the sauce that went simply with some steamed rice. On the far top; our noodle dish that was beef and hokkien-style noodles lightly wok tossed with some shredded veggies. I absolutely love myself some dumplings so we order ourselves a plate of pan fried pork dumplings that turned out to be soft and inside with just enough of it's own j

Decent lunch. Quite nice place. Ordered Noodles soup, fried pork buns and Shanghai 3 variety side dish. Can't complain. Food was good. Service reasonably good as waiters English not too good. Must have been at a different place to that being reviewed so negative here.

Poor services - Amateur!!. Been told a new Shanghai restaurant recently opened in Eastwood and gave it a go. Went there last Thursday with my wife after 7:15 pm. The restaurant was full and there were five people already waiting. l. Waited outside for up 10 minutes and a "Poker faced" waitress came out to take details and handed over the waiting ticket. At the same time another waitress organised to separate the dining tables to accommodate the five waiting patrons- into two groups split the tables to allow 2 /3 split.

The restaurant is quite small in space . used up all space available -i.e crowded. While waiting took the privilege observing how food were served --- conclusion kitchen delivered dishes quite slow - that patrons have tow wait to be fed!. The dishes are oily shined - typical deep fried then quick wok approach.. health conscious eaters watch out!

At the same time another five people turned up of whom took another 10 minutes for another waitress (looks like owner) came out to gathered details of these five patrons , 2-3 split,

After 25 minutes, finally a table became available. Both myself and my wife thought the restaurant would do the same separate the table to accommodate two groups 2 -3 split.. Then came the waitress (who looks like one of the owner) and led the group of 3 which came 20 minutes than us to the vacant table. I felt be unfairly treated and challenged the waitress why she gave away the table to the late comer. Without blinking her eye she said they had booking ... I said what .. " you came out and hand over the waiting docket to them , how dare you lied ." The waitress did not respond just turned her back .
Given the amateur and unfair treatment I decided to reported this and let all know about how unprofessional the restaurant is ".

NEVER AGAIN!. Service was poor and staff were rude! It took me 20 minutes to find a waitress to take my order. The quality of food was bad and very expensive for its portion size. I ordered 3 dishes, they seemed like leftovers you would throw out at home, absolute RUBBISH and the noodles I had were like instant cup noodles. I will never eat there again!
