Dno about the complaints but the service for me was quick and food tasted well.
This is one of the few restaurants that are open till late (I believe 1am) and my friends and I were hungry for a quick feed at 12am.
So many people complaining about the service! I found the service fast, efficient & the waiters super helpful. Been there twice & both times, they helped us use the set menu so it's cheaper. They may seem perfunctory or rude, but go to Chinatown & that's just how they are. You're not going to get simpering here & I'm glad for that. The food is always spot on. Have always left feeling stuffed from good food. Have recommended this place to lots of friends & family. It's already my dad's favourite place to eat.
My wife and I have been having lunch for quite some time. Overall, we are satisfied with quality, price and service. Unfortunately, the vinyl covering of the long bench seats has frayed to such an extent it is irritating the exposed parts of our thighs. This condition has been there for quite some time. I am disappointed the owner has not deem the damage bad enough to warrant a refit. Customers need comfortable seats to enjoy their meals. It is not a problem when wearing long pants although it is an eyesore.
Service is very standard but their kitchen is open till 12.30am which is great
Bbq rice roll was the best I've had it came out fresh and was really tasty
Preserved meat clay hot pot was ok, it was not traditional as the rice was not crispy around the edges and lacked flavor, it also took really long to come out to our table...
I would come back for a late night feed though.
Ginger and shallots is one (if not the only) place in my local area open past midnight. For this reason, it is a go-to-place to satisfy midnight cravings. Overall for the price (not very expensive), the service and the food are quite satisfactory, however I probably wouldn't go there during main meal times when other restaurants are open in Eastwood.
Dishes I would recommend include the preserved egg congee (paired with the deep fried fritters), and the individual rice dishes (gong bao chicken with rice) especially if you are hungry (portion sizes are larger)
If you are ever craving a proper Chinese feed past midnight then look no further.
This restaurant stays open until 2am serving every dish on the menu. The staff are fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese and English. The food comes out quick but does not comprise quality or quantity.
this is the place I go when i don't know what to eat in Eastwood. Their dishes are average (certainly some are above average especially their chicken dishes). The quality of dishes is stable so I won't be like getting something terrible.
The steamed Barramundi was what stole my heart and palate. The medium sized serving exuded freshness, had wholesome bites of tender insides and was daintily decorated with green broccoli and thin slices of ginger. Instinctively we look at the eyes of the fish for the quality of the fish. The sauce was not over whelming but just at the right note. Our appetites were enhanced further by this classic prepared seafood. It played with smell, taste and vision. I placed some fish slices on to the fluffy steamed white rice and it opened my senses further.
Open till late which is quite convenient. Dish is fine. Congee is good. Mostly for midnight choice. I do think good to have such a place near by.
This is the family's go-to Chinese restaurant. And it has never disappointed us before. Very cheap and the service is very quick. You also get complimentary soup at the beginning while you wait for your food to come out. I suggest only going for the mains to go with some rice as these dishes always are quite well done.
My favourite place to go for late night food. This place opens until late it is the perfect place to get some food when everything else is closed. Food is cheap and huge portions. Large variety of choices.
I just love the glisten on the peking pork ribs. The pork is battered and deep fried then coated with the Peking style sauce.
Tasty lunch specials. We went there for lunch and each got an individual lunch special for $9.80, which includes a main and a drink. We ordered fried rice noodles with beef (average) and sticky fried rice (delicious). For drinks we got milk tea and lemon milk tea, both big servings and satisfying. I would definitely go again, but will be ordering the fried rice. The fried rice noodles didn ́t feel fresh, as if they had been reheated but not for long enough. For the price you can ́t really complain though.

Delicious Food, Generous Portions, Mediocre Service. What Ginger & Shallots manages to accomplish is a kitchen that can cook; so far, the food that I have encountered from it is prepared quickly enough that I don't feel put-off by the wait, whilst managing to maintain a standard of good food. Portions are relatively good in comparison to what other restaurants do nowadays, and the variety they offer through the expansive menu may keep you coming back.
The downsides, however, involve the fact that dishes will not come up together, but rather separately meaning you can have one beef dish arriving within 5 minutes of the order, but then the fish does not come until half an hour later; if you're dying to have a dinner complete with all the sides with the rice or perhaps eating together with your friends/family, then you might be disappointed. However, this is not always the case, meaning the experience can vary from time to time. To add upon this criticism, the restaurant is not exactly the cleanest during peak hours, and seating is sometimes awkward due to the tight space. Whilst it is impressive the waiters/waitresses generally don't write down orders but rather memorize it before inputting it into the machine, they do sometimes forget to fulfill small tasks like refilling tea or asking for certain utensils.
All in all, these downsides are heavily outweighed by the good-quality food. If you aren't too particularly picky about the quality of the restaurant in terms of look, servicing and timing of the food that comes out, you should definitely give this restaurant a try as they do genuinely seem to care about what they do, in comparison to some other competitors in Eastwood.
Local dinner. This is a local lunch or late night dinner place for me, been here many occasions!
PROS: Great authentic and extensive menu. Food all tastes great and portions are decent sized. Price is cheap-resonable and location is great.
CONS: Staff speaks minimal english and are barely attentive. Tables and cutlery not very clean in general, with seat covers half ripped up and tables being wobbly.
Overall, great place for casual dinner or lunch and good value for money.
My husband and I go there for dinner a lot, good little cafe restaurant, good food, fast service, food are fairly priced too.
Delicious food & Nice wait staff. This has been my favourite restaurant in Eastwood for the past six years. It changed its name to Ginger & Shallots (more catchy name) ealier this year 2011. It is a nice spot for lunch & dinner (& breakfast on weekends). Parking is close by. It has the best congee in Sydney. I also like their Prawns in shell with Vermicille in hot pot; Shandong chicken; Pork chops in Peking style; Soft shell Crabs; Whole fried fish; and Fried rice noodles with Prawns & Eggs. Their waiting staff are the best in Eastwood - efficient, knowledgeable and some very good looking. The dishes come out quicky. Highly recommended restaurant.
This is a newly re-renovated restaurant. We found that the dishes are nicer and the staff are more friendly. Strongly recommend the Shan Dong Chicken, Congee and Soft Shell Crab with Vemicelli. It is a nice place for family and friends get together. Parking is cross the road. For supper lovers the restaurant opens till 1:00 am everyday!
