Review Yuchu - Elsternwick

Aya K
I give Yuchu five stars because I am a repeat customer and I also recommend this place to others. I grew up in Singapore so am very familiar with Malaysian Chinese food, and the food here is legit. For lunch I tend to gravitate towards the roast duck (and order wontons) with dry egg noodles or the seafood noodles with gravy. I've had several different whole fish dishes there for dinner and they were all great. Service is good too and you can tell that they have a lot of regulars.

Consistently great food, warm friendly service. The barbecue pork buns are some of the best I have had

Great value for money! The portions were large and the chicken exceptionally tender. The mixed veggies are a great side dish too. Large parking area nearby. Recommended.

There are very few good Chinese restaurants around the area. This place is new and food is of fantastic quality. Very busy place but service is quick. Happy to come back here again anytime.

If you are hungry and by yourself and looking for somewhere to dine in yourself. This is definitely not the place to walk into. They prefer customers in a larger group so they can order all the mains with drinks so the bills will be bigger. I was asked what was i there for I walked in by myself and i felt unwelcomed straight away and was attempted to be moved to a dark corner table table after i had to find a table myself without help. Also only go there if you have alot of time in your hand. The only two or three tables were waiting for their food. Imagine if they have more customers.

The food was very good although the service was a little bit slow and Confused we had the dumplings which were just as good as panda mumma if not a little bit better the calamari with excellent the servings are large considering how small the price is easy to walk in and have a good meal well worth the visit

Great Chinese restaurant in the area. Fantastic duck on rice for a reasonable price. Has the best hits of Asian on one menu. Been with the family, close friends and for causal take away almost every week. Cannot recommend highly enough for the quality and price. I believe there is a Malaysian and Hong Kong duck chef . Give it a try.

Chinese BBQ is wonderful! Authentic Hong Kong taste and style. Stuff were very attentive and friendly. Had 3 different Cantonese roast and they're all great. Also had the Flounder, water spinach, and 2 different fried rice, and they were all wonderful. Especially the Flounder, crispy on the outside, perfectly cooked and juicy on the inside. Honestly one of the best Chilli and salt Flounder I've ever had. Food was too good we forgot to take pictures. Highly recommended, and would definitely be back!

This is our new fave spot! The food is delicious, the servings are generous, and the prices are cheap especially for the area! No matter what your request, this place can accommodate, because everything is fresh and all the sauces are made in-house. Plus the decor is awesome.

Sorry but a very poor first experience. Takeaway order was misplaced and ended up being cold. One whole dish was left out. Oily to the point of inedible.

Best take away tonight. We’ve eaten in also and food is fantastic.

Excellent service, atmosphere, good portion sizes and the flavours are not your normal Australian 'Chinese'. The curry laksa was amazing and my mate is addicted to them and had 7 in the last week!

This place is incredible! The best Chinese food in Melbourne! The owners Becky and Chris are so friendly and lovely to chat too we have got to know them quite well. INCREDIBLE home made dumplings and I love the curry paste they make for the Singapore noodles. We have been going for over 2 years and absolutely love it every time we go in. They also do a killer mango pudding with green tea or black sesame ice cream. Good choice of wine and lovely Asian drinks. Can’t get enough of it just awesome. Do yourself a favour though make sure you book a table to avoid missing out!

More of a 3.5
Ordered family lunch from here and got takeaway. Spent $178 for 6 people, very disappointed by the confusing pricing for the entree size Peking Duck.

Menu says (4pcs) and a price of $5.90 but this is actually the price per piece and the minimum is 4. Perhaps an oversight on my behalf but this isn’t a common menu layout and should be corrected.

- The food was hit and miss. The Special Fried Rice was fantastic, everyone loved that dish.
- The Peking Duck went soggy as there was a small pool of liquid in the container.
- BBQ Duck had great flavour but we expected it to be boneless, every piece had bones.
- Curry Vegetables had a fantastic mix of veggies however we found the sauce to be too watery.
- Chicken and Sweetcorn Soup was really tasty but the serve was slightly on the smaller side.

The staff were very polite when picking up the order. We found it unusual that there were no prawn crackers, especially for an order this big. They also (without any forewarning) have a surcharge for ALL credit cards. I went to pay and the staff member assumed my account was credit and tried to add the surcharge. He happily changed the amount when I said I had a Savings Account but it was annoying to assume in the first place.

After reading Jojo Armani review for Yuchu, I have been telling myself to try them out. Finally got around to it and I very much agree with her assessment of the food. Hit and misses abound with the two dishes that we tried, but overall it was a pleasant meal.

The stir-fried black bean beef noodle was rather oily, and lacking wok hei. This however does not detract from the fact that it was very well-seasoned and also, the slices of beef were tender and abundant throughout.

The BBQ pork and roast duck were reasonably succulent and moist, but lacking the depth of flavour that comes from roasting the meat.

Service was welcoming and kindly throughout, and with so many other dishes on offer, I'm not against the idea of returning to give the rest a go.

3.5 to be precise

Once again defeated by Melbourne’s fickle weather, we came to Yuchu on a hot weekday because we felt that a nice and simple steamed barramundi would fit the bill.

Coupled with a plate of Special Fried Rice and Red Oil Wontons, the fish did its job - to a certain extent. The mild savoury soy dressing complimented the fish well, but the fish itself failed to hold its own, sadly missing its own natural flavour.

The fried rice was fragrantly infused with wok heat, and laced with tasty bits of roast pork and good sized prawns.

Don’t even get me started on the wontons. I could go on for days about how amazing they were! With their smooth velvety skins and plump luscious fillings, these little pillows from heaven were easily the best wontons we have had!

Previously, we tried their Belachan Kangkung and Hakka Style Wok Tossed Calamari, neither of which faired too well, but their Crispy Pork was spot on.

Whilst service seemed a little chaotic on both occasions, proprietors Becky and Christine who hail from Macau have been warm and accommodating each time. We were told that those heavenly wontons were their mum’s brainchild. This lady deserves a big hug!

The wontons, fried rice and crispy pork definitely deserve high scores. It is a shame that the other dishes were mediocre. However, we are happy to return for the wontons and give the other menu items a go.

Great staff & service, modern decor; but not modern enough NOT to be serving shark fin.
We left without eating & hope to return when the proprietors get with the times and recognise that shark finning cannot be tolerated.

New family fave! Our weekly fix for Chinese from a family run modern Chinese restaurant! Popular dishes are the BBQ pork and Peking duck = delicious! So glad we found you! Service is friendly! Grab a table upstairs if your want something more intimate!

We ate here on Friday night for a birthday dinner. There was 8 adults. The food was so delicious I can’t wait to go back. Roast duck was tender and yum. Pork spare ribs, flavoursome. Crackling Pork was good but more fat than meat and pieces were cut a little small but the crackling was crispy. Fried rice was super yummy and the prawns were large tender king prawns cooked to perfection. The starters of Peking duck pancakes & pork & prawn springs rolls were a perfect start to the meal. Sides of roti with peanut sauce and mixed greens were a great addition. We shared all these meals between 8 including chicken which I can’t comment on as I unfortunately didn’t get any.

We went for dinner on Saturday night and the restaurant was very full, with a good, though very noisy vibe, as there were lots of kids/families. We ordered entrees and mains and clarified with the waitress what was to come when... one entree came and the other didn't. A very long time passed and finally we asked for the other which came (soup) which was tepid, at best. Both entrees were lovely but soup really needs to be hot. The mains (Seafood hot pot) and a lobster/noodle special were both excellent and generous. Very tasty food with hearty portions, half of which we took home. Would definitely recommend this restaurant though perhaps take time to clarify with wait staff, though we did do this, to no avail, but it's still a great restaurant and will definitely go again.

This Chinese/Malaysian place is always full so my dinner date decided that we just had to try it. Our table was a little awkwardly placed with a cool Winters breeze coming through the door when opened, but for a quick Sunday night dinner, we weren’t bothered. We had the pan fried dumplings to start and then devoured a huge bowl of fish laksa each- generous portions of fish fillet perfectly cooked, deliciously smokey eggplant and a combination of hokkien noodles and vermicelli, all swimming in a rich, creamy Malaysian curry broth. I was greedy and went the roti on the side too which wasn’t as flakey as I’d like but it did the soaking job it was ordered for. And at $17 for a huge bowl of tasty laksa goodness, I’ll be back. Service and meals were quick and menu covers a lot of ground. All up, $73 for two including a glass of wine each.

A family favorite and not without reason!pretty much every thing was absolutely fabulous! Definitely need to go back to try more stuff from the menu!

The best place in Elsternwick for roasted duck and glazed chicken, along with other popular Chinese dishes.

Nice decor design and simple layout.

4 star might seem a little high for your local Chinese restaurant, however hear me out. This has the be the best western influenced Chinese food I have had in a long time. Produce was fresh, everything was delicious and service was friendly and very speedy. What really blew us away were the portion sizes. The sides are a main on their own. We loved the sizzling garlic prawns, vegetarian fried rice and Singapore noodles (which came with full sized prawns not little shrimp - mind blowing). Highly recommend and book in advance on a busy weekend night.

We popped into this restaurant purely to try their selection of roast meats! Their roast duck and roast pork was very tender and succulent. Inside the restaurant was very clean and it would be a great spot to go with your family. We will be sure to try out their dumplings next time we visit.

I have eaten at Yuchi 3 or 4 times since it opened and I can tell you it is an absolute gem for a local eatery. Lunch time they are packed out because they offer quality food, in large portions for very little money. The Malaysian chicken curry with roti is stand out at $15.
Dinner you always have to book and while this is a little more expensive the produce is outstanding particular the prawns.
But what I love most is that it’s a quality restaurant that allow you to bring your own wine! Why oh why don’t more restaurants offer BYO?

Finally tried this restaurant after hearing mum constantly rave about it. Ordered 8 dishes to take away and could not fault one. The special fried rice, crispy combination fried noodles and horfun had a charred wok flavour, the roasts succulent and delicious and salt pepper tofu delightful. You must must must try Yuchu. You will be back. I promise. Keep up the great work Becky and mum, til next time!

This is Mom's favourite restaurant where she came almost 10 times in two weeks. So I had to try it when buying food for my birthday lunch.

We had the special fried rice, salt and pepper tofu, noodles and the roast. Ordered a lot and we almost finished everything as everyone enjoyed their meal. Special mention to the salt and pepper tofu and also the roasts (tender and crispy roast pork and juicy BBQ pork)

We went to Yuchu on Sunday night as we thought we’d try this new restaurant in Elsternwick. The food we ordered exceeded our expectations. To start with we shared chicken satay sticks and the soft shell crab. Both were delicious and ample for starters for the three of us. We then had the crispy pork, the Peking duck and some fried rice. All were generous serves as well as being the best we’d eaten in a long time. The Peking duck was outstanding with a hint of anise. Service was great and drinks were reasonably priced. The only negative was the noise in the restaurant but it was busy. Overall, we had a fabulous meal. Thank you Yuchu!

Popped in for a quick lunch, was served quickly with a delicious piping hot food. Lovely ambience, cosy yet bustling with activity. Great place to catch up.
What a feast we had: Soft shell crabs in chilli salt, roast duck noodles, curry chicken noodles, roast pork rice, egg & gravy hor fun, soy milk & fried ice cream! Everything tasted great but warning to those with low MSG tolerance.

Yuchu opened recently in Elsternwick and no matter the day they always have a full house. The restaurant seats about 50 people. The staff are very friendly and personable.

The reason I keep going back is for the Roast Duck which is cooked with Traditional Hong Kong methods. The skin is crispy the meat flavoursome and juicy it is absolute perfection. I can't bring myself to order anything else it is just too good! Best Roast Duck I have found in Melbourne 🙌🏽

The current review of 2.8 does not do this place justice.

The food took quite a while to arrive (almost half an hour), at lunchtime on a Wednesday.

When it did arrive; the dried noodles were delicious, however the curry was very oily and the roti underwhelming.

My iced lemon tea was forgotten, and when re-ordered was very strong and syrupy.

The new fit out is lovely, but I probably won't come here again. If you want cheap and yummy Asian food, go to Panda Mama down the street.

After waiting a few weeks to make arrangements to try this restaurant it feels that they have made a tremendous effort to have a clean family friendly establishment. The staff are courteous and friendly and the servings are large.

If you like Pork or Duck this is their expertise. I had the Vegi Spring Rolls, Sang Choi Bow and barramundi and it was delicious.

I would try again and it is a solid nice restaurant for the area.
Omnivore By Nature
As someone who eats cantonese roast meat growing up, I can confirm this place makes one of the better roast/bbq meat. Had the roast duck tonight and its not your average greasy kind of duck. U can see the duck had been handled with care just by looking at the colour of the meat and skin. Tasted authenic.

The presentation of the dish was also above average, not the usual slab on meat on a bed of half cooked rice. Atmosphere is great too. So if u are bringing friends or a special someone this place is certainly a good option that also wont break the wallet.

Could be the best chinese restaurant on glen huntly no joke, highly recommend you try them out~

This newly opened restaurant has a nice atmosphere and decor. However food wise is a but average. I had 4 dishes here tonight and probably only 2 would pass. Fermented tofu and chilli water spinach tastes nothing but sweet, I couldn't taste any fermented tofu at all. Mapo seafood tofu was again very sweet and not at all chilli, maybe they thought I had ordered sweet soy sauce. Thrice cooked pork belly again had no tasty of preserved vegetable and was just sweet. Pan seared eye fillet is so so, the beef most likely had been marinated with some soda to make the beef less chewy, not too bad but not worth $28. The only dish that was good was the salt and pepper calamari. The food taste may appeal to Westerners but it's definitely not authentic Chinese.

Get the smoked duck, and the soy chicken with the green dipping sauce. Ultra traditional. High quality. A good wine list as well! Best value for dinner in the area.
