My partner and I ordered take away from Here for the first time. Great customer service to begin with. The meal was ready on time. Very well presented and most of all the food was simply delicious.
We will be back again and again!
Thank you for a great experience.
The food here is delicious and fresh and well-made. Service was polite and friendly. The hilights were the sushi and sashimi.
This place is excellent! The staff are so lovely and the food is some of the best; with a large range of both small plates, mains, salads, starters and desserts there’s so many great options for everyone
What a great local Japanese restaurant. Very busy and best to reserve a table. The service was friendly and the food came out quite quickly. The age dashi tofu and sushi/sashimi platter were amazing. We also ordered the beef tataki, duck pancakes and sukiyaki which weren’t too bad.
Really like the food at Tataki:) love the bento box.
A pretty small place with lovely decor. Recommend booking a table if you’re a large group (though I think there might be another seating are in the back?) Had a chicken tonkatsu and it was so crispy with amazingly tender chicken. Also had some teppenyaki chicken and the same applies: tender chicken with delicious sauce. I’ve had takeaway from here a number of times and it was always good, but I think the food is even better when you eat in. Will definitely be eating here again!
Fresh and extremely tasty food. We ordered the karage bento and the beef udon noodles, also the pork gyoza. It was perfect and will eat from here again
Friendly, efficient and prompt service. The serves are generous and the Sashimi I had was faultless. Everything is done without fuss. Any restaurant full on a Wednesday night is a good sign of quality & value.
Best Japanese I have had in yrs staff were fantastic.. N the food was fresh and awesome. Thankyou to the chef u served us amazing food.. Thankyou so much.. We will be back. Our new Japanese restaurant to go too

Tataki is everything you want, and more, from a local Japanese restaurant. We dined here on a Tuesday night, and it was packed. Despite the plethora of people, the service was fantastic, fast and efficient. We had our requisite bottle of Riesling within minutes. Short but neat wine list - our Riesling was only $26. It was nice too.
Proceeding to food, we ordered our classic Japanese favourites: spinach with sesame (superb spinach chopped more coarsely than usual - texture fantastic); sashimi (oily salmon was beautiful; white fish texture superb). All supremely fresh. We then proceeded to Agedashi Tofu and spring rolls (spring rolls perfect and crispy, Agedashi Tofu a little over-fried for my liking). We then had one of their signature dishes - Unagi (eel) on rice. Just brilliant. The texture of the eel was fantastic. The Yakitori chicken skewers were brilliant too.
Twosheds and family spend quite a bit of time in Japan - collectively - and this was extremely authentic. Tataki also do specials which are more fusion. While I’m not a fan of fusion, I’ve tried them before and they are great. I just prefer the simple classics. You must go to this place. We had such a good time, and we were enjoying the food so much, I didn’t take photos for this review (very strange for Twosheds).
Highly recommended. 4.4
The veggie udon and waffe beef steak are my favourites. The Nacu eggplant is very soft and the taste is amazing! There is an extensive menu to choose from and the atmosphere inside is friendly and cosy. Not too expensive and very hygienic inside. Always lovely service too. One can tell they take pride in their restaurant and food.definite will come back again!!!
Really enjoyed my experience at tataki. The panfry juicy pork gyoza is delicious, as is the spring rolls and chicken yakitori are fantastic. For main, We ordered teriyaki beef and fish. Love how they seem to make it healthy as possible. As it didn’t taste like it had msg and was not greasy and there was veggies serve on the side of each dish which I loved. The beef definitely my favorite, just delicious. The fish was fresh and well cooked, the sauce tasted ginger Flavour. That is amazing I highly recommend this fantastic place. The service was great and the food was amazing. Best Japanese food I’ve had outside of Japan.
Excellent local Japanese and lovely service.
Had a very enjoyable dinner with a group of 5. Came in thinking a simple teriyaki would do the trick. Instead had a delicious assortment of dishes ordered for the group by the one person who’d been before. Walked out with fond memories of my Japan trips on my mind. Tastes authentic and delicious. Will be back again soon.
We ate here last night and what a find!
We shared agidashi tofu, salmon & avocado sashimi and fried oysters, all of which were fantastic, especially the sashimi, which was the standout.
Service was really warm and attentive, without being obstructive.
For mains we shared the black cod and a seafood hot pot, again, both were very good, though the cod was the standout here, which really was so good and perfectly cooked and really tasty.
We had such a lovely and enjoyable night, the only negatives were it was very warm in the restaurant and the dessert was not good – the cheesecake with green tea icecream.
Will definitely return for more fabulous food, though will skip dessert next time!
All the entrees and mains were light, flavoursome, refreshing, and delicious. The entrees were a standout (gyoza, sushi and dumplings were delightful). Desserts are a miss - $13 for what was obviously Sara Lee frozen cheesecake and some ice cream. Overall a very good experience though.
We seem to be having my favourite cuisine Japanese a lot lately. Sometimes I don’t realise these things until I look at our photos inventory and then reality hits… not that I’m complaining though! Maybe we should go to a French restaurant soon to keep Helen happy. Well anyway… enough self reflection, let’s get on with this review! Tataki is a Japanese restaurant located in Elsternwick. The street was relatively quiet at night, and we were able to get parking right outside the restaurant. There’s a glass section at the front of the restaurant which displayed faux Japanese food, I thought this was kinda cool as it reminded me of Japan.
Met a friend here for dinner last night and we rather enjoyed our meals. As it was cold I didn't try their sashimi so this review covers dumplings / gyoza, soup and hot main dishes which all really hit the spot. Great, friendly service too.

Hands down the best Japanese in the area! The sashimi is fresh and the everything on the menu is divine. I would recommend the special salmon roll, large sashimi, soft shell crab, scallops and the eggplant. The owners and staff are always friendly and accommodating. The service is always efficient. Love this place!
Went to Tataki on Saturday April 1st for lunch with 3 besties. The food was excellent. We shared four entrees, two mains and steamed rice. Cost was $130. Great value. We had Barramundi Teriyaki and Chicken Teriyaki for the mains both delicious as were all the entrees. Service was also very good. Can definitely recommend Tataki.
Plenty of vegan options. I had about 6 different dishes and greatly enjoyed them all. The staff are friendly, but not the greatest service. The atmosphere is a bit dour. Good value, definitely worth going to if in the area, but not the kind of place you would go out of your way for.
Delicious food had gyoza-very fresh and delicate, chicken teppanyaki with veggies-well balanced tastes and sauce, chicken tatsu age- well basted fried chicken with the best salad nice and tangy flavours. Friendly service and quaint homely atmosphere felt like we were in a Japanese home for dinner. Music and lighting could be better and decor maybe more modern but minor issue. Will return 😊
We have eaten at Tataki quite a few times now and love it. The Age Dashi Tofu, eggplant with miso and mixed tempura is so well cooked and delicious. Thanks again for a lovely meal.
5 out of 5 ???
Sorry cant possibly find a single thing which i was not satisfied or impressed.
Beautiful place, extremely awesome unique taste and feeeeels fresh :)
Just try the dish you would like and m sure you wont be disappoint !!!!
Great job guys...keep it up :)
I have been to so many Japanese restaurants and this restaurant has definitely become my favourite.
I have become a regular and the owner Andy is welcoming every single time. What's best is that the food is consistent and I know exactly what I am getting. Fish on sushi is ALWAYS fresh and of excellent quality.
If you go definitely order their Nash Dengaku (Miso Eggplant) it's 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼. Favourites are Yaki Soba Noodles and Veggie California Roll!!
Our favourite local Japanese. Very friendly owners - always make us feel very welcome. We have been eating here pretty regularly since moving to the area about 8 years ago - much busier now - pays to book. Try to get a table out the front - better atmosphere. Food delicious and reasonably priced. We especially love the Age Dashi Dofu, the gyoza and the Tataki duck. Though have enjoyed everything else we have ordered also.
Tataki is one of the better Japanese restaurants along Glen Huntly Rd. The staff are always friendly and the food is always delicious. The restaurant can get busy at times and waiting on food is to be expected, they cope well with the dinner rush though. The food is a little more expensive than other Jap places in the area but it's still worth it! Thumbs up.
Tasty food and attentive service. The prices can add up quickly and a bowl of steamed rice is $2.50, so be mindful of that! But it's delicious food and we'll be back.
Our favourite Japanese restaurant and we've tried a lot! The staff are really friendly with the best service. The food is outstanding. We would recommend Tataki to everyone for a fabulous dinner at a great price.
Best umeshu I've had in a long time and the food and service were spot on!
Definitely recommend this place to others looking for inexpensive but really good Japanese food.
A small cute dinner spot with a basic Japanese menu. Banquets are available if so desire.
The chicken teriyaki could have done with more sauce. The avocado and salmon salad was just what the doctor ordered. Nothing special but not horrible
My husband and I come here very often and always have a great experience. The husband and wife team running the restaurant are very nice and remember us when we come in. We always order the same dishes consisting of the sushi and sashimi platter. We rate this restuarant much higher then Japanese restuarants in the city! For a local Japanese it is very well priced and a lovely relaxing eatery
They have THE BEST macha ice cream. Even after the banquet I managed to eat 2 scoops of the ice cream. Simple and delicious Japanese. The banquet consisted of sashimi, tempura, gyu tataki and chicken teriyaki. I enjoyed them all, very delicious, simple and well-balanced flavours. I also liked the soft shell crab. I had the salmon belly sashimi, gyoza and beef teppanyaki recently, they were all great! Salmon belly sashimi was super fresh and fatty, the beef was also super soft and tender, the teppan sauce was addictive! However, I had chicken katsu don for takeaway recently and it wasn't that good (salty and soggy), didn't match my superb dinner experience, so I'd probably stay away from the rice bowls next time. Great gem in the neighborhood. Friendly and efficient service, reasonably priced too.

Lovely food. Beautiful clean japanese food and wonderfully attentive staff!
From the specials board, we ordered the soft shell crab tempura. The light and crunchy batter was a nice contrast to the rich and buttery meat. And for $9.5 it was definitely a decent serving size. So far we were happy. Next up were the mains and they arrived promptly. The crispness of the panko bread crumbs on the Tonakatsu chicken gave the dish a lovely texture against the tangy and sweet tonakat
Ichiban.....(Number One). My favourite Japanese restaurant in Melbourne. Sure, places like Nobu and Kenzan are nice from time to time, with their rarefied atmospheres and sky high prices......but for a simple, authentic Japanese experience with reasonable prices, I choose Tataki everytime!
Delicious tasty Japanese food. It doesn't get better than this!
Another lovely meal at this little local gem. Our friends who've never heard of Tataki were delighted with the good and service and indicated they would return.
Great food. Really simple Japanese food. warm restaurant. ordered about 4 courses to share and service was bit slow but truly amazing food. was not that expensive either. staff was friendly and helpful.
Worth a detour.
Big Fan!. Simple, fresh, no fuss, just great all round. I find the food at this place very consistent and of a very high standard.
We eat here often and again had a fantastic meal here the other night. Very child friendly and the service is honest and obliging. Very reasonably priced alcohol as well if you choose not to BYO.
Fabulous & Always Outstanding. Tataki is a favourite for my friends & family. The food is exceptional. The flavours are amazing & the quality always outstanding. This is a place where the chef cooks with care for the service & benefit of the customers he serves. There is a real sense of care & attention to all that this restaurant does. It must because of this care & service that makes it such a favourite. I travel across Melbourne to dine here; it's a place of comfort, excellent Japanese food & beautiful service. Thank you Tataki for being a place I can proudly bring colleagues, friends & family to.
Very delicious and good customer service. The best customer service among all Japanese restaurant I have been in Melbourne. Moreover, the food is so delicious that you never ever forget.
Excellent quality food and service. A favorite of ours for lunch or dinner.
We love Tataki. Have been enjoying ourselves here for years now.
Having lived in Japan a long time I know my Japanese food and Tataki is good honest Japanese food.
This is a family owned and run Restaurant and they know how to look after you and serve fresh tasty food and Saka.
Dinner is always good but I'm a big fan of lunch.
Great on your own, with friends or family. Everyone feels welcome.
My favourite dishes are sesame spinach salad, eggplant,Tataki salad and of course the sushi and sashimi.
Everything is good at Tataki.
The food here is amazing! I have been here a couple of times and am delighted every time I go. The sashimi is so fresh and sushi is great. The calamari and the pork dishes are also delicious. I Highly recommend!!
Yum! The Miso Eggplant is to die for. Tempura's excellent. Most dishes we've had here have been really good. Staff sould back off though re pouncing on customers to take menu orders ...we were asked 5 times within 10mins of sitting down which is TOO much & annoying - this has been a constant negative feature of our meals here. But overall a great, mostly authentic Japanese restaurant which I would recommend. I'd give it 7/10.
One of the best and value for money japanese restaurant in Melbourne.tried so many restaurants and never ever found so fresh sashimi.the staff are ready to help with the menu and don't forget to meet and greet the wonderful owners of the place,Andy and naoko.
Recommendations:- sashimi,cod,karage.
Weekends advisable to book in as it gets full.
Thanks Andy and team for the great food with right attitude people around.
Never to miss Japanese food in town
I liked it. The miso eggplant was delicious as was my black cod. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal as did my fellow diners
Had a fantastic lunch, the lobster rolls are the best as it the black cod
Like it. Went there with 4 friends tonight. we didinot make a booking , and when we be there , there was no more space in the first dinning area, we had to sit in the function room, i thought they quite busy. the waitress i think they are all japanese ,good service,,always prompt response for your require. the deep impression for me ,its the lobster salad roll and the teriyaki kingprawn, that was my best experience of so authentic sushi roll, cannot forget the taste of the king prawn ,cannot wait for the second time visit.
Great local Japanese. Initially found Tataki by the Entertainment book, now it's become our favourite local Japanese place. Deliciously fresh sushi is a highlight as well as the Nasu Dengaku.
Tempura prawn sushi is the best in Melbourne!
Great service everytime
Kobu Who?. I am a huge lover of Japanese food and Tataki is right up there with amazing food, reasonable prices and great service. Their sushi and sashimi is always fresh. Make sure you try their Chiquawa (think that's how you spell it)! I have not seen it at any other Japanese but its the bomb! Sprinkle some of that red spice they have on the table, bit of the sauce they give you and you'll be just as addicted as me! Can't go past the Titaki duck either. All this and they're BYO. If you haven't been down there then you should. I recommend it.
Service attentive, food yummy, excellent value for
Money!
A great, no fuss local Japanese restaurant. Service is swift and everything we ate was delicious. We opted for the banquet at $35 ph and we used the voucher from the entertainment book. The banquet included miso soup (just right), sushi & sashimi platter 8pcs (great selection and fresh ingredients). Our main dishes of terryiaki seafood and terryiaki chicken were a generous serve and again hit the spot - served w steamed rice. Dessert was a scoop of ice cream and 2 cherries - just enough to finish us off. Overall though a great feed and relaxed atmosphere. I would come back
for sure!

Cheap BYO and above average Japanese food. Overall each dish was nice although not exceptional - go to Tataki for a casual night out and reasonably priced meal. The gyoza were delicious (although they pretty much taste amazing everywhere) but the eye fillet beef teppanyaki was not 'melt in your mouth' as eye fillet should be and unfortunately half of the table (of four) watched as the other half finished their main before their dishes arrived. BYO is only $2.50 per person, which is pretty reasonable! I wouldn't travel to come here but certainly head down if you're a local and looking for a good Japanese take-away.
Authentic japanese, low prices. Walking into Tataki made me immediately feel like I was back on holiday in Japan - the atmosphere is quite authentic, as was the delicious range of food.On a cold Sunday night, the little canteen dining space was packed, with a constant flow of take away orders. Staff were polite, helpful and efficient, bringing water and menus in mere minutes. Wine was poured shortly after, with the bargain $2.50 corkage per person (wine only). Food arrived quickly, and it was all a treat.
The Nasu Dengaku (fried miso eggplant) was silky and luscious, balanced well by the crisp yet light spinach and sesame salad. The chef's selection of sushi and sashimi was super fresh and beautifully presented as one would expect from a genuine Japanese chef. Tataki duck pancakes were rich but not cloying, in delicate pancakes with tasty miso and crunchy cucumber. Best of all was the special of soft shelled tempura crab, a deliciously light dish. A trio of ice-creams (one order each of black sesame, green tea and vanilla with red bean) finished off a fabulous meal. We lingered over last drinks for a while, without pressure to leave or order more. Total was $114.50 for three hungry people who went home very happy and satisfied. Will definitely be back and often.
Can't go wrong. I like this place. Ordered the potato croquettes and Goyza and they were both excellent. Mains were Katsu chicken and cooked tuna nori rolls, again very tasty.
We ordered safe, but my partner is not a major japanese food lover but he really likes this joint. Might not be authentic Japanese (don't know as never been to Japan) but we both like it.
Major plus is the e book voucher and bye wine.....can't go wrong!
Homestyle Japanese at the right price. We stuck with the basics - tempura prawns, fried pork cutlets, and some salmon sushi rolls. Not pretentious or overpriced, but good sized meals that tasted just right. The service was good and the staff very friendly and forgiving of my indecisions. Will return again :)
Good Japanese. Food was quite good here. Loved the tataki and the sashimi/maki rolls were really good. Service was friendly and it was quite busy. Will return.
Itadakimasu. Little authentic style Japanese restaurant located on the 40 zone Glen Huntly Rd. This small restaurant provided me another good experience with good service.
We order 3 courses, a sashimi and sushi combo, shabu shabu and a pork dish which I can't recall the name. Te sashimi and sushi were great, the sushi rice was soft but firm pressed. Love the Pork dish with well flavored slice pork. Shabu shabu? Disappointed one. I though shabu shabu should be a dish for customer to cook themselves but end up all pre cooked and the beef was tough.
Anyway, it was just one dishes which I don't like But I will still come back to try other dishes.
Staff were great, food was delicious and they were very accomodating of young children. We had several entrees to share, followed by lots of main dishes. We were all definitely full, and each dish was plentiful with decent portions and good quality. Would definitely recommend.
Had a lovely dinner. Every dish was fresh and tasty.
Absolutely fabulous food. Entrees were miso soup, gyoza (pork & vegetable), Yaki tori followed by shared mains of charcoal duck breast, spicy calamari, pork shokayaki, beef teppanyaki and rice...all tender and mouthwateringly delicious.
Staff were so friendly and helpful. We were a group of 9 there for a birthday so booked the function room in the back area.
Dined in for the sushi, miso and prawn dumpling soups and yaki tori, all of which were fresh and delicious
