Review Toddy Cafe, Bar, Restaurant - Elsternwick

This has been our go to takeaway Indian spot for around 3 years. The quality and size of the meals have not varied once - always utterly delicious (a cut above your usual Indian fare) and very reasonably sized serves where a curry and rice gives me another leftover meal the following day so great value. When you eat at the restaurant itself however be prepared for an entirely elevated experience where the food is stunningly presented (have eaten in twice now between lockdowns and the presentation has remained thoroughly consistent) and the menu offers dishes with a really modern twist that you can’t get in the same way on the takeaway menu - think smashed samosas, smoked eggplant and onion rings that are presented and prepared in a way that makes you feel more like you are at a fine dining indian fusion restaurant. The food just gets better and more delicious. The service is also excellent - extremely attentive yet discrete; constantly keeping on top of refilling water and drinks where required, meals come out in a very timely and well thought out order, plates are cleared promptly after finishing meals. The drinks are also very reasonably priced which makes for a nice change to some places where it’s hard to find a drink for under $10. Highly recommended. Thanks for the delicious meal tonight! My family all loved it and had a great time.

We ummd and ahhd about eating out … Toddy was our choice for dinner and without saying too much, we made a excellent choice …. 100% happy with service, presentation and quality of our food choices … no dessert this time, but definitely a return visit will be with friends in tow 👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

1st time in toddy tonight, and we will definitely be back! Well presented modern restaurant with great service. The food was amazing, the presentation of each dish was amazing. The smashed samosa is a must have! We shared a butter chicken and rice, chicken was very tender. Garlic naan was tasty too. Already looking forward to our next visit.

What a great restaurant! Came here for dinner this week as some friends recommended and it was such a lovely evening. Menu has great variety and fair prices, and the food is just delicious. The atmosphere is super nice and chill and service was great. We really enjoyed dinner, would highly recommend! Food was really really good.

Absolutely scrumptious delicious food. Tried 4 dishes and all were outstanding. Highly recommend. Unfortunately the corkage fee $30 was outrageous. But the food makes up for it. Blend of flavours sublime.

This was our first time dining here, the service and food was impeccable, we have been to many Indian restaurants and this was beyond anything we have tasted before! We had the smashed samosa, scallops, beef cheek, chicken tandoori and naan. All was delicious and incredible! We will be back! Highly recommend! Thank you again.

First time visit , loved the atmosphere, Sunday lunchtime vibe was very busy. Chose from a board menu, sweetcorn fritters with jalapeno salsa, guacamole dip, greens, add a juice of watermelon, grapefruit plus?...delicious coffee was excellent. Service efficient. Comprehensive menu. Pricing reasonable. Great decor, the colour scheme was forest green subway tiles with velvet rich grreen bench seats. There is a large heated outdoor area.

Uber eats order:

gulab jamoons - undercooked, it tasted like a ball of atta dunked in sugar syrup. On top of it it's 6$. Not worth at all, taste wise as well as from a monetary perspective.

Gajar halwa - soggy and like a paste. If I boiled carrot, mashed or pureed it and mixed some sugar, it would have tasted the same. Lacked flavour and was basically carrot mash. Worst gajar halwa I've ever eaten. Again was 6$ and not worth at all.

Added in a aloo parantha just to get a free delivery off uber eats to meet minimum order as I had high expectations of Toddy's dessert making skills. But I was highly disappointed.

Delicious food lovely service I could give 10+

Probably the best Indian food in the area. I've eaten here twice now and both times the food was excellent, crisp pastry on the smashed samosa, delicious flavours in the smokey eggplant dish that we had. Very tasty Chicken Butter Cream with nice naan breads. This place has take away meals racing out the door while there's plenty of space to sit in very comfy space. Can't help but think they'd be gangbuster busy if they were in a different section of Glenhuntly Rd. Should be harder to get into! Good service - fairly simple wine list, but it's the food that is standout here.

TODDY is our new favourite Indian place in the inner South East. Excellently-presented dishes with a modern twist. We loved the smashed samosa, pakora, garlic naan, chicken dishes and smoked eggplant. The dessert dumplings are also incredible. The staff and management are also lovely. We can't wait to be back.

Delicious curries and homemade naans. The dessert dumplings are incredible. A local gem! Great service, beautifully presented food, professionally run kitchen.

Fantastic food, very tasty, highly recommend! Toddy is a great venue for dinner. Can’t wait to go back. The food was presented beautifully. Thank you to the staff for a lovely evening.

The food is great! I enjoy the scallop entree.
The beef wasn’t slow cooked enough, but it’s not too bad. The naan bread is one of the best I have tried.
Cocktails were great and good price!
Highly recommended

I've lived in Melbourne for 13 years and have tried many Indian restaurants. Toddy is without a doubt the best in the town. Smashed samosa is a must try. Perfect modern touch to authentic Indian flavours.

We hadn't heard of Toddy before looking for somewhere to go on Good Friday so we booked and went for dinner and was not disappointed.
I am English so know a good curry. I am also not a vegetarian but went along with the wife's Good Friday tradition of no meat.
The food was superb and I can't wait to try some meat dishes! Lovely service too. An experience that we will be both be very happy to repeat.
My new best Indian restaurant in Melbourne.
Thank you 😃

Sometimes I stumble across a restaurant purely because of good aesthetics, and just hope that the food will "match", and I'm often right, and was again tonight. I wanted to try it here because it looks great at night driving past and I love Indian food, so I didn't think I could go wrong. So glad we tried this and you must too.

It's beautiful and spacious inside, and one thing it has that other Indian restaurants don't, is nice big tables. We were seated promptly (albeit in hard and a bit uncomfortable chairs) and the manager/owner(?) told us the specials and explained the entrees. Everything sounded delicious. I ordered the Smashed Samosa for starters and it was not only excellent in taste, but one of the most gorgeously presented dishes I've had. It was really good, although a tiny bit on the hot side. For main, I had the Butter Chicken and Garlic Naan, and shared rice. Everything came out so beautifully presented. The flavours were so good, and the actual dishes themselves were great and different to other Indian restaurants. You actually eat out of the dish the main comes in, rather than dishing it out onto plates. The only minor things I wasn't a fan of, was that the chicken was on the bone rather than boneless pieces, but it was easy to eat, and tasted so dang good! It could have done with a little more sauce, as there didn't seem enough for the dish plus naan, but really, this is just nitpicking.

Overall ... I would HIGHLY recommend trying Toddy. The service was quick and friendly, and the food aesthetically and palatally pleasing. It's well priced and a lot of parking outside. Give this a go NOW if you like Indian food with a twist.

We ordered take away and really enjoyed the food. Great customer service, staff were very helpful. Meal deals also very reasonable! Would definitely recommend.

The food here is quite simply delicious, it’s by far the best Indian food you can find in Melbourne. Warning though that the hot dishes are very hot and not for the faint hearted, but they are also extremely flavourful.

Would recommend to everyone and anyone.

Amazing food and great service. Real Indian food with a twist - absolutely superb. Would highly recommend, restaurant is also decked out very well - nice and modern with great ambiance.
Kimi
Fabulous Indian food, head and shoulders above other Indian restaurants in the area. Modern interpretations of traditional Indian dishes. Have tried a number of dishes over a couple of visits - all excellent. A must try (and you can BYO wine).

Firstly, I made a reservation via Zomato which the restaurant manager, said he never received. Luckily I called to confirm prior to the arrival and organised the table. Once arriving, we were instructed rather rudely to order only a few entrees as they are shareable. Mind you we had 11 guests and were willing to order our own entrees and mains. We did as instructed and when the plates came to the table, the disappointment of the entire table was clearly obvious. We order 2 tandoori platters, to receive 4 items on a plate. 1 tandoori chicken drumstick, 1 mince kebab, 1 prawn and 1 lamb chop. Don’t advise customers how to order if they prefer to individual order, indicate the portion size for the guest to then decide. Onto Mains, the lamb shank was a hit - the lucky ones that order that was content. However, we ordered a Butter chicken, Grilled Tikka Barramundi and Biriyani. Those dishes were all disappointing, the fish was tasteless, with little marination time between preparation. Butter chicken was sweet and the biryani was dry.
Also, hire more staff, one person to run front end is ridiculous and unprofessional!
An incredibly disappointing experience, never again

What a fantastic addition to Glen Huntly road. A refreshing take on Indian food with it's modern, eclectic twist.
Chef Ranbir and the team have landed on a magic formula that left us with a beautiful, enduring culinary experience unlike the typical Indian fare in Melbourne. The highlight of our night was definitely the Lamb Shank Nihari and the Beef Cheek Bhuna - melt in mouth deliciousness!
Next time you're having your curry craving do yourself a favour and give Toddy a shot. You won't be disappointed!

A hidden gem...the quality of the food is absolutely superb, and the experience is accompanied by great customer service. We can’t wait to go back. Our new go-to place

Yesterday night me and some of the lads were strolling down Glenhuntly road after a long time and stumbled across a humble looking Indian joint called Toddy. NOT YOUR TYPICAL INDIAN FOOD AT ALL! The atmosphere was great, the alcohol selection was wonderful and they had excellent vegetarian food with well thought through presentation! Would recommend and will come back again!

A unique, modern take on Indian with beautiful presentation and amazing flavours. The smashed samosas are a must try! For those who aren’t great with spicy food, rest assured knowing that you can choose between mild or hot. Also really warm service from the owner/chef and wait staff!
Carly
Indian food with a modern twist, everything we ordered looked and tasted great! Also with great service and a nice atmosphere , highly recommended.

Great new contemporary Indian restaurant in Elsternwick. Different menu. Started with the smashed samosa which was excellent then shared goat curry, a pumpkin masala and a seafood dish. All were really good although the whitebait in the seafood dish were a bit too fishy. Will we back.

Recently found this hidden gem offering Indian and Pakistani dishes, presented with a twist. Taste is maintained authentic. Neat and modern ambience. They also offer a range on cocktails and mock-tails.

Absolutely delicious. My only regret is that it’s taken us so long to get here. Being a local it’s always good to have a place to walk to and I think I we will be wearing a path there in no time
Children loved it too
Fresh contemporary Indian food with the perfect mix of flavour and heat. Each dish had its unique flavour and our shared plates were wiped clean with the Kashmir naan ( my favourite) I can highly recommend this delicious restaurant.

We have visited Toddy a number of times now as we love Indian food after travelling to India. Toddy has superior food, where they use interesting variations on Indian classic dishes to take them to the next level. A great find for anyone in the Elsternwick area.

This place is great. A modern atmosphere, relaxed ambience, a dining experience far superior to the traditional Indian restaurants. The food is really good - a slightly modern twist on all the classics. You will not be disappointed. The staff are incredibly welcoming and you cannot fault the service.

Best Indian in the area. Really friendly service and the owner has a lot of knowledge about Indian food. The dishes are modern and delicious. Would highly recommend this place.
I have had both a sit in dinner and take away, the food was fantastic, really nice space and overall a great new spot Would recommend the smashed samosa and Korma

Dined in and had the feed me option. The food was devine, it wasn’t your usual Indian. The beef cheek main was one of the best I’ve had. Really tender and the flavours were great. The real surprise was the desserts, never considered Indian cuisine for their sweets, how wrong I was.

Delicious Indian fusion! We went with a group of six and found the main meals perfect for sharing. Great service and atmosphere. Everyone enjoyed the food. Feeling lucky to have stumbled across this gem. Looking forward to returning.

We decided to try this new restaurant and love Indian food live in Elsternwick.
The butter chicken was inedible as it had so much sugar it was worse than sickly.
In truth, you have been warned.

Went here for lunch on father’s day with a group of friends. We had great food and a great experience! It was a lovely outing and great customer service by the team at Toddy

Not your traditional style Indian restaurant - Indian with a twist - but delicious flavours, terrific presentation and super friendly service made this a memorable dining experience. Recommend highly.
