Review Mexico City - Elsternwick

Ozzy Kunnu
We are in LOVE with the combos they do. It's filling, beautifully flavored and economical.... and the cherry on the cake were gummies ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ Looking forward to ordering again.

One of the greatest restaurant in Melbourne. Place might be small but the food is big in flavour and size! Nachos sauce is so good and cheesy. Tacos are great snack size and very tasty. Quesadillas are not in a shape that we had in mind but still great and beef is soft too. Food - 9 Service - 10 Vibe - 9 Price - $$

Really fab Mexican restaurant. Lovely staff and yummy food. Order the nacho wedges and thank us later.. so good!

The Glen Huntley Mexico city is not as good as the centre road one. Smaller portions, not as tasty and not as attentive staff. Beef fajita was very fatty. Food and experience was overall average.
JN Parinas-Thompson
Food tasted above average, very good serving sizes, tiny restaurant but lovely interior, very good service time, and very polite and hospitable staff. All in all, we enjoyed our dining experience here at Mexico City!
Caitlin Murton
Amazing food and friendly service! Chimichanga was fresh and the Fish taco to die for ๐ŸŒฎ๐ŸŒฎ

Decided to try Mexico City for the first time last night and we were impressed. The staff were really friendly and we were seated outside quickly. The sangria was absolutely delicious, and definitely one of the best I've had. Will be ordering the jug next time! The quesadillas were different to what I expected but I think this is the more authentic way and they were so tasty. My partner enjoyed the fajita too. Portion sizes were great. Highly recommend trying this gem in Elsternwick next time you feel like Mexican!

Absolutely delicious food and amazing service. It was our birthday and we were looked after as we always are. Weโ€™ve been regular customers and will keep coming back! Margaritas are fantastic too :)

Fantastic experience tonight. Staff, service and food was excellent. Carlos out waiter was great. Highly recommend.

Amazing Mexican , chimichanga was next level , staff were amazing , and the owner knows how to run a business . Canโ€™t wait to come back ๏ฟฝ

Great food. Great service. Tequila sunrise shots on the house and lollies. Love this place

Tried to book for 9 pax at 5:30pm. Was told I needed to be out by 7pm. Are they serious??? WTF
Claire Avocado Cunningham
Best and most authentic Mexican food I've had since being in Melbourne. Not like all these crap hipster Mexican places popping up. Found my new favourite restaurant.
Trish Gay
Best place ever! Even catering for my fructose intolerance they are by far the best Mexican restaurant I have ever been to... Fast and friendly service is just a bonus... Thanks for being so amazing xxx
Pauline Osborne
Delicious filling food, tremendous service, and jelly snakes at the end. Great sangria! Rarely a fortnight goes by without a visit. Local gem!
John Li Donni

Wow wow wow how delish! We have been meaning to try for months now and finally took the plunge. No regrets! We ordered Uber eats as we did not know they do local delivery. And the Chicken burrito was absolutely delicious! Portions were great. Arrived warm and intact. The black beans were some of the best!
If your local call in and see if they deliver to help support local business. If we knew we would have done this rather than use Uber rats.
Canโ€™t wait to come dine in. New weekly take out sorted! :)
Dani Boudville
I've only ordered the nachos from this restaurantant they are pretty much as you'd expect corn chips with cheese and sals, guacamole and sour cream on the side (it also comes with beans). Excellent for when you don't want to cook nachos.

I think weโ€™ve found our new favourite Mexican restaurant. We popped in for dinner with friends and everything was absolutely delicious. We ordered the potachos (nachos but with potato wedges), tacos, fajitas and a burrito. All I can say is wow, the portions were very good, flavours were plentiful and there was a good atmosphere in the restaurant. First time switching up our nachos and yuuuum!!

Mexico City food reminds me of Taco Bill. Same flavours, similar plating . Lacks creativity. The margaritas and drinks are really good though. Really need to up your game with food.

Tacos!!!

Have the tacos, best we have had!

Staff are nice, bar is unique and modern

The tequila list.... endless

Will return

Enchiladas and nachos were also very good although the salsa can do with some improvement.

Would return

Love this placeโ€™s chimichangas and are my favourite restaurant and food. I go here for my bday every year now and I canโ€™t wait to go back for my next bday.

Love the fit out - backlighting of the bottles looks amazing.ย

Food was sensational - super yummy, as were our drinks. Unfortunately what has let down their rating is the fact that they are still (in 2019, with the state of our waters)ย serving plastic straws. I did mention this to the manager who was, basically, non responsive.ย

Staff were great!
Decent Feed
This has to be one of my favourite Mexican chains ever, I can always count on Mexico City to deliver some good quality food. This time round, we went for the pulled beef chimichanga, and chicken quesadillas. Both dishes were so filling and satisfying, giving us generous amounts of salsa, avo and sour cream. Service was great as usual, with not too long of a wait time for our food.
Sig
Great Mexican food, theyโ€™re tacos are awesome
All of their food is fresh , their margaritas are yummy , the only criticism I have is please make the non alcoholic ones like your other restaurant in Bentleigh
Sweetoothbrunches
I simply love coming to this place, their food is delicious and large servings. Their fishbowl drinks will definitely leave you with a buzz. Due to it's popularity you may need to wait for a table, but it's definitely worth it.
David Coe
Great selection of drinks, friendly staff, very efficient staff, busy most nights... food always great every time we have eaten here. Pleasant bar/restaurant atmosphere, if a little noisy when full. Clearly everyone was enjoying themselves!!!
Hazey
Love the food at Mexico City! Large range of drinks including an extensive tequila menu, along with margaritas, mojitos, beers and wines. On the menu thereโ€™s a good mix of tacos, burritos, quesadillas and fajitas along with salads and paella, and donโ€™t forget dessert! Service is friendly and attentive. Itโ€™s very fairly priced & the food comes out quick, fresh and delicious.
Lynda Tieu
Great place for dinner on a Friday night. Food is consistently good and drinks are reasonably priced too. Love that you get complimentary corn chips and salsa while you wait for your food to come out. Try the chimichanga, it's a fried burrito so the tortilla is beautifully crispy!
Vivian
The Mexican here was ok, not the best but not the worst . The portion sizes were quite large and the price very reasonable. The service was very attentive even when we chose to sit outside
Matt Beach Wilkins
Fantastic and filling mexican food! Brilliant fish bowls and outstanding customer first attitude, shout out to Gary who made it 10/10. Would recommend to all.
The Judge
Went here for a pre film bite, opted for the chicken fajitas and the my partner got the bean burrito.

I added guacamole and sour cream to my dish which as absolute must. Serving were generous however elements of the fajitas lacked flavour and the bean burrito a little plain. As far as a quick, casual and cheap bite goes this certainly gets the job done!
Nick Percy
Great little Mexican joint with fresh food, very attentive service.
Worth the trip out of the city if youโ€™re looking for a no nonsense authentic Mexican feed. Recommend the chimichangas!
Mr. Brunch
Decent Mexican place. Had a quite Sunday night dinner with friends. The food is nothing special but this is not a fine dining restaurant. Although the venue is quite small they have created a good atmosphere with the limited space. Perfect for a catch up with some friends over reasonably priced Mexican.
ToorakM
Yum yum yum. I have been eyeing them off for ages but went off Mexican but now after eating theirs I'm back on Mexican.

I loved the beef quesadilla- it was absolutely amazing with the best beef. Lots of flavour and spice.

The chicken fajitas are so good too - full of lean meat. So much flavour.

The guacamole tastes like banana!! Asked 4 others with me and all said - banana. What's with that! Corn chips are great too.
FoodHedonist
Good Service, warm, inviting and entertaining Latin music. I had the 3 combo quesadilla - it was delicious. Closest Mexican place to my home. I am coming back!!
Julianne Valokuvaus
Lovely staff and great ambience. Ordered the chicken chimichanga and a Mexican punch. I'm grateful for the juice and punch that is at a reasonable price. Usually the juice options are so expensive but this was great. Punch was delicious. Thought the chimichanga would've been more crispy as it was deep fried, also thought it would have other bits of filling to it other than just shredded chicken in a tortilla. The rice and beans were delicious though and if you mix it all together with the guacamole, salsa and sour cream it's really really good. Maybe that's what they want you to do. Would definitely go back or order on uber eats
Miki Glat
Nice food, nice set up but there's no wow factor with the dishes. The only thing I order from there are the nachos because the tacos from past experience have been tasteless.
Fancy That
Amazing food, great atmosphere and staff were fantastic especially Gloria.
We travelled interstate an Mexico City was referred from friends, definitely be returning on next visit..
Anna
Anyone who enjoys this slop
Has NEVER had good food before
As for the Service VERY POOR attitude by the Staff.. if you must employ back packers at least make sure they're hospitable and polite !!!!
Amy
Positively Awful!!
Food was terrible, tasteless and oily. Very over priced. Would never eat here again and certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Valerie Moreno
I Love this place, the place's decoration and feeling is great. The waiters are very nice and treat you with great attitude. Most importantly, the food is just what I was looking for to remember my dear Mexico.
Jeremy Rothman
Food is bland, how you can have flavorless Mexican food beats me... I would pick Mexican from a box at a supermarket over this. cooked terribly and badly overpriced for quality and size of serving, wouldn't go back if you payed me
Bigboi69
Took my girlfriend there to a night out and was absolutely treated to a great night. Food was outstanding, had a great time. The actual venue was beautiful had so many trinkets around it really showed the culture it was fantastic. The manager on the night was great she really looked after us on the night. Very happy with the night. Thank you to all the staff!! Will definitely be coming back.
LeanGuy
To me, Mexico City is a copy of Taco Bill. Same food choice, prepared in almost the same way. Similar prices. Service was good. I took off points for lack of originality. Having said that, if you're in the mood or Taco Bill, but you're in Elsterwick, then I'd recommend this place (there is no Taco Bill nearby).
Sarah
The food was amazing but the service was like being in a Faulty Towers episode. Fajitas saved the day! Will head back to try more of the menu.
Melissa
Just had dinner for two and really enjoyed it. Staff were very nice and attentive, and the place has a nice vibe. I had the 3 Amigos, very large serve I had to give the taco to my partner. Food was really nice, a good local for Elsternwick.
JB
Nice looking venue with very attentive and friendly wait staff. Unfortunately that's where the dream ends; you get that sinking feeling when your waitress as she puts your meal in front of you states be careful the plate is very hot. Yes it was like 1982 at a Taco Bell, bastardised Mexican, and I use the description Mexican very lightly.
Chelsey Ramos
Came here for my birthday. I love Mexican and wanted something low key. This is a local to us and have always walked pasted and noticed there is always people in here so figured it was good. We booked early (5.30pm) because we have a baby and lucky we did. People were rolling off the street every 10mins. Ordered drinks. Loved my frozen margarita. Perfect for this hot weather. The waitress came back with corn chips and salsa for the table. This is such a nice touch which we really loved. The food was delicious. I ordered the fajita salad. This had so much meat on the top which I loved. The Dressing was Delish but if ordering this you must get guacamole on the side, the salad needs it. Hubby ordered the chimichanga. He loved this. Perfect portion size. Usually Mexican is massive meals but these were a great size that left us full but not rolling out the door. So glad to find the restaurant. This will now be our go to. Service was great and prices were great too!
Bridget Thompson
Enjoyed beef burrito and Wed-chos (combo wedges and nachoes). Comfortable, casual atmosphere with Spanish music playing. Many tables were reserved on a Wednesday night, so consider booking. Reasonably priced and wait staff provided good service. Meals were served quickly. Liked the Mexican decor and the wood feature bar.
Goopee Howard
We called this place Gary's after the owner Gary. It has a real name Mexico City. We used to visit Mexico city about once a week. We would always get a jug of margarita but the food order varied. The burritos and fajitas were the most regularly ordered items.
Aiken Drum
Food is OK. Waitress that served us appeared completely untrained and really struggled to understand English. Manager friendly and helpful, and sorted the bill issue without a drama.
Graham Waller
Really nice food, beer and Margeritas. First time we have been there and will happily go back. Lovely friendly service too. I recommend the lamb fajitas. Thanks guys
FatKidAtHeart
Went to Mexico City on Glenhuntly Road on a Friday night, it was a busy place. The food was good, nothing that would make me jump out and say 'Yasss!!' but good taste and overall met the expectations. The staff were friendly and professional, I think! although the service was a bit slow may be coz they were a bit busy but it was Friday night still! ย Because the place is a bit small if you have a big loud group of people next to you (or you're the big loud group of people ;)) the dinner for two becomes a bit noisy! Sangria was good but tad too sweet for my taste may be.ย Would go there again for sure though.

My first bad review, wasted my money tonight.. This was the local Mexican, first time there, Saturday, made a reservation for 2 at 8:30pm. A couple were at the door in front of us, without a reservation, were seated after us, ordered their meal, got drinks, ate and left before my partner got her meal. We had to chase someone for menus, didn't get water for the table - a very poor start! After waiting for 25mins for meals, cocktails took a while too, my partner's chicken quesadilla was burned around the edges, we asked if that was normal, they took it back.. such a rubbish experience in the first 35mins at Mexico City. My beef burrito was ok, cocktails ok. The manager, whom initially sat us down, was very apologetic and made a massive effort to make up, even kindly offered to waive the bill, we paid because people don't work for nothing. The rating is purely for the manager's efforts, otherwise 0.
Lefoodie
Decent Mexican food & reasonably priced. Quite a few margaritas if that's your thing, and a long menu with something to suit most people.

A little noisy & cramped inside but otherwise a nice dining spot.
DJ
I not easily inspired to review restaurants. Mexico City provided this inspiration. Quite simply the service last night was amongst the best I have experienced anywhere ever. The food was very good. The best Mexican within 5 kms of Elwood.
Labby
Awesome place I regularly visit! Service is consistent. Nachos are to die for and alcohol is fantastic. Owner is very hospitable and gave us on the house mouse! Thank Mexico City keep up the good work!
Carlo
Great vibe and great prices. My wife and I ordered some soft tacos and prawn paella, both were good. Alcohol was definitely well priced and the manager even gave us a shot of expensive tequila lol. Overall a good experience and a solid Mexican offering. Top tip: order the deep fried taco ๐Ÿ˜‹

I haven't lived in Elsternwick long but already I find it a struggle to eat out. There aren't many choices, apart from Eastern European and Asian. One of my favourite cuisines is Mexican and this restaurant certainly delivered! There was also a massive selection of gluten free options, which includes everything in these photos! I had the chicken faghitas, with some sides of sauces. My boyfriend had the '3 Amigos' taco, enchilada & nachos. Both came with rice and beans. Generous servings, tasty feed, reasonable price!
Peter
The food was great - so great that my fussy son wants to go back two days later. I tend to pretty much live on Mexican food on my annual trips to California and it's always exciting to find a new restaurant in Melbourne that gets it right. The only reason I'm rating this 4.5 not 5 is that there was a little mistake with our order. But that aside, the staff were all so friendly and the food was wonderful, especially the beef enchiladas. Definitely going back soon. Probably tonight if my kid's nagging is successful.
Suzanne Kehl
We went here last night, I really liked this place, the food was great, service was even better, very engaging. We had paella and it was so fresh with lots of flavour...nachos a must! Was absolutely great.....thanks for the relationship advise too lol. Great night all round.
Lauren Fusco
Always love a good Mexican dinner night! Mexico City was busy but they managed to fit us in for a table for two straight away, however the service was unfortunately not as fast. The range is extensive with some traditional and modern takes of Mexican dishes for a reasonable price, not too cheap or too expensive. However, after being given menus and not being asked to take our order for 20 minutes, I had to physically go to the counter and get a staff member to take our order. Following that, it took another 30 minutes for our food to arrive which seemed long as it was not as busy as before. We also noticed others orders were taking a very very long time. The meal was nice. I ordered the combination fajita salad. Fresh flavours and decent portions were a plus! Only thing stopping this restaurant to be a higher rating was the very slow service though I would recommend for an easy, laid back dinner and will return to sample other dishes plus cheap margaritas!
Dam Burger
The usual Mexican food nothing amazing but not bad. Sangria was overly sweet however house red was great. Service was very good, they even have a few tequila shots as samples very impressed thanks.
Lisa Wang
Great discovery for new movers. Enjoyed our quesadilla, chimichanga and sangria thoroughly. Friendly and patient staff. Welcoming atmosphere. Good place to relax before or after a movie.
Jenzi
Blink and you miss it! The sign says Tacos & Tequila bar' so you could walk right past it if you are looking for the 'Mexico City' sign. It is also incredible small from the front and the exterior belies the quality contained within.

ย This place is such a breath of fresh air. Warm, cheerful, and the food is fresh and delicious. It also very reasonably priced and has an outside area for warm nights.ย

I would recommend investing in better outdoor appeal (new tables and chairs/some signage that clearly shows the name of the restaurant that is readable from the road etc.) . Other than that. Top marks!
Bluesstatsman
It was not for the first time that we visited Mexico City in Elsternwick. We had a party of 7 all ordering different dishes with nobody being disappointed. Gary, the owner is a fabulous host, even though he didn't quite get all meals delivered in time, with the chimichanga being delayed. Even taking this into account, the service was excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and finished the night with complimentary dessert tequila. This place has consistently delivered the goods over a number of years, and yes we will be back.
Ghawk
Besides the Mexican chain restaurants which have been around for years a number of new Mexican restaurants are popping up in Melbourne. Mexico City is more expensive than your average Mexican restaurant. Bust as the saying goes ' you get what you pay for' rings true here. Your opinion of how great Mexican food is will change after you have a meal at Mexico City.
Nelly
Well they have just acquired new regular customers. No, this is not a threat, but a fact.

To make my point I'm not easily wowed by Mexican. As a matter of fact until recently I would avoid it at all costs. Then I went to a Mexican restaurant in Soho New York and my opinion was forever altered.

I realise Australia is significantly further from Mexico. Moreover we still have much to learn about the cuisine here.

However in recent more years, Mexican restaurants have been springing up in Melbourne challenging this notion. About time. Anyway add this to the list as one one of them.

A real fluke we walked into Mexico City and a good one too.

Great service, great flavours. Good value for money, really warm aura. All ticks in my book
David Lew
I never expected a restaurant to do as great with Mexican in Australia, after experiencing some amazing, authentic Mexican in the U.S. That changed today.

Wow.

* Ambiance - warm and inviting
* Great, authentic flavours. Every bite a delight - mains as well as desserts
* Reasonable serving sizes
* Complementary corn chips with fresh home made salsa to whet appetite
* very warm, friendly staff with service to match
* when we ordered some chocolate moose for the kids to share, I guess because we'd ordered a reasonable amount, they provided it on the house. A pleasant surprise.

1 glass of Sangria, 2 mains, 1 kids main, 1 dessert and 1 (complementary) kids dessert - $77. Very reasonable for what we experienced food- and service-wise.
Mihail Lazarov
It was our first time visiting this restaurant and we were truly impressed with the menu, the quality of food and how tasty it was! Awesome staff, very very welcoming. I highly recommend the Paella. Very delicious and a generous serving. The Sangria is yummie! We'll be visiting again soon.
Charlie
Had dinner here a few months ago, my husband and I had the shared dinner with lamb and chicken. The atmosphere was really comfortable, except for the three guys who wanted everyone to hear what they were talking about and every fifth word was f@@k. Staff was great and knew what he was doing as he made the food suggestion for us. The food came out in a timely manner, the lamb and chicken was cooked perfectly, very enjoyable, will definitely be back again
Chris Topher
The food and the margaritas are the best mexican I have had in Melbourne. I live just down the road and I try to go as much as possible. The staff are very friendly and helpful. They are always busy and full and now have a back section. I would recommend booking if you go on a busy night like a Saturday night. If you feel that the food is taking too long just ask the waiter, they are fantastic and will be very helpful.
Wabt traditional Mexican? Just in Elsternwick definitely try Mexico City over any of the others.
Food Mama
Had a great night at this small but fun place. The tequila flights along with the nachos are divine.
The owners are attentive n are celebrating their 5 years restaurant anniversary , didn't even know this gem had been around for that long.
We had the Deleon, 1942, Casa Azul n Fortaleza flight.
Carlos n Elia were great with their Latin hospitality.
Muchos Gracious.
Js9127
1 hour wait for nachos and 1.5 hour wait for tacos & fajitas. We dined on a Saturday night and were only informed 45 minutes after ordering, that the kitchen was running behind. We sat in the back room where all tables, bar ours and 1 other, left after their entrees as they were sick of waiting. The food was okay but nothing special, average Mexican that you could get anywhere. I am a coeliac and left the restaurant in a great deal of pain after being told all my meals were GF, however my stomach is still very sore the day after the meal (so something definitely was not GF grr). The other table that stayed waiting for food with us mentioned that management had changed and along with it, so had the service & the food. Wait staff were fantastic in ensuring everyone was looked after during wait times, however the kitchen really let them down.

Too long to wait, average food & now my coeliac has flared up = will NEVER return!!!
Aust Gent
Heartily recommend Mexico City - a ripping local Mexican Restaurant at Nepean Highway (Brighton Road) end of Glenhuntly Road Elsternwick.
Went last night with family (2 x adults & 3 x kids). Service was brilliant!
The wait staff and owner spoke to the kids like adults and explained the food options.
We were having a conversation about tequila and they brought a bottle over to show the kids the worm - late in the night they poured me a shot on the house!
Food was great and well above standard mex that you would get around Melb. The salads and the black negra beans they used in the burritos etc were well above par.ย Everyone enjoyed their food including the burritos, tacos and fajitas etc.
The mex beers were well priced and went down a treat.
This is a gem -great atmosphere, food and service - go there you will not be disappointed!
Amber Wilkie
Fantastic Mexican joint where you feel welcome. The second time I went was months and months after the first and the wait staff remembered me. Now that's service! Amazing prawn salad. ๐Ÿ‘
Andrew Y
Best Mexican restaurant in Melbourne. Food was delicious and service was fantastic. Had dinner here on a Saturday night and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Serving sizes were generous and pricing is reasonable. Staff are really friendly and the owner Rohit makes it his priority that you've had a good experience.

Great service. Very helpful with vegan requirements. We all had great time ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ‘ฏ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ‘ฏ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ‘ฏ๐Ÿ‘ฏ

Trendy meets traditional... and it's terrific!. Who would have thought that what could be Melbourne's best Mexican wouldn't be found in a trendy locale like St Kilda or Collingwood, but in Glen Huntly Road, Elsternwick's ever growing food strip?

Mexico City is not your on-trend "nouveau" Mexican, nor is it your suburban-style "old school" Mexican. What it is, is somewhere in between, and that's what makes it so wonderful. You get hearty, rich, and generous servings, combined with the most wonderful flavours.

The test of any Mexican restaurant is how well they do that old staple Nachos - and let me tell you, Mexico City's version of them beats any others with flying colours (of red, white and green!) Truly amazing!

Owner Gary is always front and centre and is a superbly friendly host, and he obviously runs a tight ship both in the kitchen and out front as the service is as top notch as the food always is.

Extensive Mexican beer, cocktail and wine list too, but try the Copal Guatemalan beer. It's an extremely refreshing drop to wash down those Nachos!
Eseli_
Very vegan friendly. Good food and just great that they can make nearly everything vegan. They don't have vegan cheese but still they even make the quesadillas for you without cheese. Thumb up also for the service quick and friendly.
Sam
Great local place. This is the place for a great meal and genuine hospitality. The food is authentic, home style, generous serves, with fresh ingredients. The service is attentive, prompt with a friendly atmosphere. As a family we visit regularly and find the quality of food and service to always be consistent.
Asharma.wall
Fantastic food & service. We tried it for the first time last night for a casual dinner and were pleasantly surprised. Authentic tasty food, wonderful staff and great atmosphere. We had chicken Paella and chicken Burrito with Sangria. Both dishes were super tasty, fresh and quick. I couldn't stop at 1 Sangria either. Also reasonably priced for the quality of food and service. We will definitely be back to try everything else on the menu. Again, can't speak highly enough of this little gem...great local find!
Brilea
Terrible. Bad food...burritos more onion than anything else
tacos cold and got a lecture when we asked for them to be heated
waitress useless..couldnt explain difference between burittto and quesadilla
food took ages to arrive

many better mexican elsewhere and lotts of better options in the street

yuck yuck yuck
Campbell Dunstan.
Mr Campbell Dunstan. Amazing food, people were amazing. Great selection of beers, outstanding customer service AAA 100%
Callum_wolfman
Paradise in Mexico. Incredible food and service. Waiter staff definitely went the extra mile to accomodate all of our needs! Will be coming back here for a date. That's right, bring a date to a Mexican joint!
Anita
Awesome experience - food was amazing and had great service from friendly staff. Impressive range of tequila and mescal and interesting (in a good way) cocktails. Great value too! Will definitely be back.
Rudy Zasshoff
Fresh, tasty Mexican fare done well. Service is friendly and fast. Great drinks list with plenty of Mexican beers. The mescal list is a point of pride of the owner and worth exploring. Already planning a return visit.
Dusty Venetian
I don't get it. This place is pretty darn good!. Despite some of the reviews below, this is a way-better-than-just-serviceable suburban Tex-Mex joint that delivers exactly what it promises - nothing more and nothing less.

The Mexican beer list is extensive, the portions generous (if a wee bit on the 'exy' side), the food tasty and well-cooked (Chimichanga - which is a fried Burrito and serious heart risk - delish!) and the service attentive and friendly (without being cloying). A great place for a pre-film-at-the-Elsternwick Classic fill-up.

Special note for people who have some sort of expectation of Melbourne's Mexican restaurants in a Mamacita/Fonda/Acland Street Cantina world: this is NOTHING like those places, nor does it set out to be. Set your culinary decor time-machine to the 90s, adjust your belt notch and settle in for a delicious feed and great drinks.
Michael Lee
Friendly and prompt service, decent food at a decent price. Keep up the good work :)
Will
Probably the best Mexican food I've had. Great service. Great food.
Bri Shaw
If I was forced to choose between sex and Mexico City, it would he Mexico city hands down!
Always awesome guys, serving orgasmic food.
Chauntel Scarr
Awesome!. Divine staff who were so so so nice to our not so nice children! Attentive, advisable and really great food. An all over great night! Will be back!
Nicholasrobertwelch
GREAT EXPERIENCE. Had a great experience last Saturday night. The food was the best representation I've seen in Melbourne of proper tex-mex without all the short cuts alot of restaurants use. The cocktails were nice, and the Mexican/South American beer list must of been the BIGGEST I've ever seen a restaurant offer. Tried a great tequila they suggested, Tequila Distinguido Blanco - really enjoyable.
Andy
OK OK. Although Meat used is relatively standard quality, food is tasty.
Paella was certainly not fresh and served dry on a sizzling hot plate, tasted more like warmed up left overs.
Mexican food was not meant to be expensive. Given the portion sizes and the small amount of meat used, I'd consider the mains to be worth $12-14 not $18-22.

Good food, great service. I don't know what happened for those who had bad experiences here, but it was our first time dining here with friends and we had a great time. The Margaritas were delicious. The waiter was very attentive and explained the dishes well and when he didn't know something, he found out for us. He also heard us mention that one of our party had had a birthday recently and brought us complimentary chocolate nachos to celebrate. It wasn't expensive and the atmosphere was relaxed. We will definitely tell our friends and visit again.

Great place. Good service - even on the busy night, good food and atmosphere, went there with 3 kids and enjoyed very much!

My girlfriend Chloe and I love this place! We started coming here because the food was delicious and Chloe lives locally (I live in doncaster) we now come because the staff are so friendly, we just finished having a Sangria and a mouse with the owner Gary. I've never been to a restaurant where I'm greeted by name before, it's nice.
I'd highly recommend the 3 amigoes it's got a bit of everything.
Oh and ask for the complimentary salsa, it's yum

Just want to say how amazing the staff and food is at Mexico City Elsternwick! They go above and beyond for their customers. I have been a regular since it opened as I am gluten free and they cater well for my intolerance. I have have brought many friends to Mexico City (some from the States and Canada that have regularly visited Mexico) and have complimented the good quality food and service that is received. I cannot reiterate enough how much Mexico City have accommodated me and my gluten free/fructose free needs, seriously the best restaurant I have been to in a long time.

First time here after walking past many times, will not be back.

Vegetarian burrito was almost all purple bean mush, hot salad leaves and bland corn chips.

Chicken paella looked more like fried rice at a Chinese restaurant.

Waiter was friendly but food was not worth the price. Old El Paso would've been better!

The first time I went to Mexico City, the food was amazing and the waiter (who was the owner) was attentive, friendly and even gave us free drinks! I'm not sure what has happened since that time because the second time I visited, I found the food absolutely disgusting! The black beans that accompanied my burritos was tasteless and pasty - yuck! Also my rice was virtually inedible. There's a difference between al dente and undercooked! My friend ordered the tacos and found them soggy and tasteless. My biggest complaint was that there was only ONE waiter who was doing everything (taking orders, bringing the food out, processing payments etc) which meant that I was jockeying for his attention and competing with tre other patrons. The plates were not cleared for about twenty minutes before he strolled over and asked for dessert. He also forgot to refill our water glasses because he was doing so much. Terrible service! I'll never be going to Mexico City again.

Fun, family night. Awesome service. Went in on Monday night. There were two large tables. One across from us, one beside us. Wasn't an issue, we got our good quick and no problems were had, as for the review below us, the wedchos one come in one size, the opinions are for the nachos. Granted the menu could be set out Easier but you could say that with anywhere. Also he was walking with you and your friend with one finger on it, Then accused him of manslaughter. Well done. My kids had nuggets and nachos with their kids meals, reasonablity priced, free drink with the meal and a choice of dessert (chocolate moose). We had nachos REGULAR SIZE, mine with chicken my wife just normal. Hit the spot.

Abusive Waiter. The nachos were smaller than expected, it was for me and my friend to share and the waiter didn't ask what size but later we realised there were options! He gave us entree to share... And we said it was all we were ordering! Why wouldn't you ask if they wanted the larger size? We weren't ordering anything else except drinks... There were only four wedges in the wedgos! We sat out the front. The awkward waiter gave us hats and when we went to pay asked for them back. We realised they were using us for free advertising! We had thought they were free, and when my friend cheekily and VERY jokingly refused, he pulled it so that it pulled against her neck and she had to unwind it off, very weird idea of hospitality, we were shocked, and aren't ever going back.

*update*
To the guy below me, Sam, who I suspect is the waiter... 'following you with one finger' you were pulling from behind the counter, no patron could have seen that... All I could see was the thread pulling on my friends neck, just shocking.

Horrendous service. I have dined here many times. I love the food, its amazing, however the service is nothing short of shocking. The waitress that is regularly here is rude, she has been there every time I have gone and her customer service is horrendous.
I will be seeking alternative Mexican from now on in order to avoid being treated like rubbish.

Extremely disappointed. The only positive thing I could write is the portion sizes were adequate. I found the girl waitressing to be extremely rude particularly when she snatched the money from my hand when I paid.
The food was way too salty and I needed to keep asking for water. I ordered 1 chicken and 1 beef enchilada and the meat was stringy. Mexican food is all about spice and this simply lacked it.
Save your money for ol El Paso

Great service, great night. Chose Mexico City based solely on urbanspoon reviews and we had a really great night. We went for my daughter's 11th birthday with guests ranging from 74 to 6 and everyone had a great night. The food was fresh and delicious. I found the serving sizes just right and especially loved the kids menu at $10 for drink, main and ice-cream. Prices were reasonable and the food better than a standard suburban tex-mex. The best was the service we received from a young waitress who anticipated out needs beautifully including timing the kids meals just perfect and even having the sense to ask how we would like the meals delivered considering the age spread. She was friendly and efficient. The icing on the cake was the complimentary chocolate nachos (absolutely delicious) for the birthday party. They then delivered hats to the table for photos - an hilarious end to a great meal. The grandparents were not keen on having Mexican, but enjoyed the food so much, they will be very willing guests next time we go. Although we did not have it, they have set menus also which are very reasonable $31 for 5 courses - there are also 3 and 4 course choices. We will be back - next time without the kids and grandparents, on the tram so it can be a margarita night! Ola!

Great local Mexican - affordable. Really enjoyed our meals last night at Mexico City - we had the salsa for entree followed by a chicken burrito and enchilada. The chicken was a bit disappointed and could have been more strongly flavoured but for $15 for a regular meal the portions are large and include a generous serving of green salad and Mexican rice.

Highly recommended is the margharita on the rocks for just $12 a serve.

Very deceiving, all extra dishes are made out to be choices as part of your existing meal.
Food is pretty average, nice enough, but nothing to be too excited about.
Very annoyed by the misleading of staff to make us get $20 of extra stuff we didn't even want. .

Lovely food, huge portions and great staff. Will definitely be back.
