We had takeaway - barra was fine, cream bulee excellent. Wine really very very good (Wallington chardonnay)
I went to Mercers last year for a birthday celebration and got the matching wines menu which I highly recommend, as it was really good pairings to the food. I was such an enjoyable meal. What made it even more amazing was the personable touch this restaurant had with their great service. It was fine dining but really intimate and cosy and we had the absolute pleasure of chatting to the owner and head chef, Steve Mercer.
We have been coming to Mercers for years, and never been disappointed! The food is exceptional, and the wine list extensive. Always found everything perfectly cooked and well presented
Especially love the Malaysian dancing prawns and soufflés!
I personally think it is well priced for the quality of the food, and would highly recommend for any special occasions.

4.5! Highly recommend the degustation menu! Lovely ambience and knowledgeable staff. Stand out dishes were definitely the dancing prawns and that amazing dessert platter. The matched wines were good too but I wouldn’t do that option again though. I think red wine and white wine glasses should be different shapes/sizes to truly experience the full taste and flavours of the wine. I hate a generic shape wine glass....cheapens the experience. Could’ve been a 5/5.

Beautiful restaurant decor. Our waitress Tanya was extremely attentive and knowledgeable on the wines and dishes, very kind. The dishes were all incredible but the clear standout was the Dancing Prawns, Steak Main and the Dessert Platter, although the sole degustation menu was worth it, especially with the widely chosen wine pairings. The Owner Steve talked to us after our beautiful dining experience and was very humble and pleasant to talk to. We will be returning for sure! Thank you for making my 22nd birthday memorable and worthwhile!

The food is beautifully presented - and delicious as well.
The service is a mix of professional at the same time as friendly.
We are greeted as we arrive and as we leave like special guests.
The building is welcoming. The rooms are carpeted which adds to the ambiance, but and also improves the accoustics so that you can actually hear the people at your table speaking. A big plus! Unlike big barn-like restaurants with concrete floors where we can't hear ourselves think!
Parking is no problem with a carpark at the back.
Attention to detail applies to everything.
We use Mercers as our standard of what a really good restaurant should be like, and we haven't found any better here or overseas...or as good!
Expect to have a very special dinner and most enjoying relaxed evening when you dine at Steve & Ute Mercer's restaurant.

A nice little suburban dining destination. We had the three course dinner and enjoyed the meals and the wine. If I was to nit pick anything it was that the service was very slow between courses but I think it's a family owned business so it may not function like a full blown commercial kitchen.
Overall a great night out far away from the CBD.
This restaurant had been on my radar for a while so took the opportunity when visiting Melbourne. Wasn't disappointed, great ambiance, superb wine list and very accommodating staff. We had the dancing prawns for starters & they were delicious. Food very good, we even had dessert although we were full because we saw a couple sharing the taster desserts for two. Highly recommend - particularly good for a romantic evening.
Fine dining at Mercer's. A very welcoming atmosphere and staff. It has a very cozy ambience. Though the food didn't match up to my expectations but they do have a lovely selection of wines.

Just celebrated my birthday with my husband at Mercer's tonight and as usual, it was amazing. Customer service was warm and welcoming. Mood lighting and soft music. We had the degustation for 2 and it was a mind reeling experience for my tongue.
I don't claim to have a trained talent by any means but we thoroughly enjoyed the whimsy of each dish. Each course brought a new adventure and we gorged with our eyes, noses and taste buds. Thank you Mercers for making us (particularly me :) ) very special. We will be back again!

Always a welcoming, attractive restaurant to return to.
All dishes of the usual high standard.
Two observations - a glass of bubbly was ordered, but was a long time coming ( even though only 10 diners in the restaurant). It arrived, after a reminder.
One main was served tepid. (Made what is usually, a great meal, not so memorable).
Hope the restaurant maintains it's Sundays BYO policy.
Ate here for the first time earlier this month. The service was lovely and the food was amazing. The price is more than reasonable for fine dining. They even decorated one of the plates as we were there to celebrate a birthday. Highly recommend, especially the dessert platter!!!
LOVE this place. We had experienced a terrible restaurant and phoned them to ask if they would be able to fit us in for dessert which they kindly did. They never fail to impress, the staff, the food, the attention to details is perfect. Thank you for being so fabulous!
The food at Mercer's is always wonderful and the service is fantastic, and there is a great wine list. I have eaten here a number of times and I have never been disappointed. It is the perfect place to enjoy a special dinner or celebration.

We went there last Sat - dinner for 2. We booked for 7.30 and when we arrived the restaurant was packed and in full swing. Perhaps a early or later arrival might be better. Anyway, we were "pointed" to our table in the corner rather that lead there with the menu. After maybe 5-10 minutes the waiter arrived with the menu and said she'll be back in 2 mins for our drinks order. 10 minutes later, another waiter turned up and we placed out drinks and food order together.
Fortunately, from this point on, the evening improved with complimentary appetizer. You pay fixed prices for 2 or 3 courses (or degustation) and then you choose from the menu. We had the beef wellington and roasted duck for mains and shared the Le Grande plate of dessert. All the dishes were excellent quality and quite creative.
Decor was quite homey equally suitable for a group dinner or just the two. Service was friendly but definitely not slick like most of the city restaurant of its class. I think it's almost 101 that you show patrons to their table with the menu, point out the drink list and come back in 2 mins for the drinks order and definitely don't say you're coming back and forgot. And when you bring the mains, you don't leave with 2 empty glasses without asking if more drinks are required to go with the rest of the meal. I tend to think service could improve if I have to attract the waiter's attention for order a second round of drinks.
Don't get me wrong. Overall, we were very impressed with the food and the whole meal. I just had to explain why the score was not higher.
The food at Mercers was excellent. We had the degustation menu and it was sensational. A little twist of flavours to every dish. The service was great and made us feel welcome.
User reviews. We've been to Mercers on many occasions and have always been pampered beyond belief. If you believe any of the negative critiques, you're missing out badly. If you've written a negative critique about Mercers, then I can only ask who urged you to do it. The meals are incredibly good and 'Le Grand Dessert' is a must for any two patrons. Want to feel like Royalty? Go to Mercers. It's that simple.

Favorite restaurant in Melbourne!. I cannot recommend this place more. I have had some of the best dining experiences I have ever had here. The atmosphere is warm and the waitstaff are well trained and pleasant. The food is incredible and beautifully presented. The wine list is impressive and very reasonably priced. The owners are absolutely lovely and are always happy to chat. Quite simply this is one of the best overall dining experiences you can have in Melbourne.

We had dinner at The Mercer. The food was amazing. We had the dancing prawns which was fantastic. I had the fish for main, didn't know it was crumbed, I was hoping it was fresh but it was still very good. And the Deseret was the best dish of the night. Will definitely go back. Well done Mercer.
Great food and relax experience for a fine dining. We went here because our friend went here and booked for a dinner here. We were warned that it will be fine dining, however when we arrived there, there was no formality compared to other fine dining (which is very good), service was attentive and great but you still feel the warmth.
Food was great, we tried the 3 course one. Dessert was great. Will definitely come back.
Favourite place in Eltham. We've been coming to Mercer's Restaurant for years - only to celebrate special dates but have recently realised what a waste that is. We went last month - service as always was brilliant, food was perfect, in fact one of our group voted the souffle the best that she'd ever eaten. We're going again this week and have decided that we really need to visit them more often - you are guaranteed a perfect meal

Excellent. My second visit with a group of friends, and Mercer's did not disappoint. We all greatly enjoyed the summer degustation menu with matching wines, every aspect was superb. When told there were a couple of birthdays being celebrated, the staff added a "Happy Birthday" greeting in chocolate on the dessert platters - great fun. Staff were friendly and efficient, and the meal proceeded at just the right pace. Seating was comfortable, and the atmosphere convivial without being too noisy. Conveniences were clean and modern. Only one tiny negative, as we had arrived later in the evening, the carpark was full. The cost of a meal at Mercer's is not cheap, however it is definitely worth it!
SO LUCKY. I am so lucky this is just around the corner from me .. I have been going here for years and highly recommend the degustation with matching wines to get your palette popping :)
We stumbled onto this place and were not disappointed. We first asked for a different table and this was done without fuss! The food was sensational, staff were attentive but discreet and the chef/owner made the effort to come out to meet us. He is passionate about his food and seems to care about customer satisfaction. My husband and I wanted a relaxed atmosphere and a good meal and this place exceeded expectations. Definite recommend
Do Yourself & Your Wife A Favour. My wife and I booked into Mercer's for lunch on a Sunday recently. When we got there we found that we were the only booking for that day. However, Stephen opened the restaurant and had all the appropriate staff on duty. We had the degustation menu with matching wines. It was a fantastic experience. The food was superb, the wines matched each course, and the explanation of each course and the matching wine was very informative. Although other dinners did turn up, Stephen came out and sat with my wife and I and discussed many aspects of the food and matching wines. We have lived in Eltham for a number of years and have experienced Mercer's delights on a number of occasions, but this lunch was by far the best time we have had and I would be remiss if I didn't tell all about it. We will be going back shortly! I could not recommend Mercer's highly enough!

Fine dining in Eltham. We enjoyed the degustation menu at Mercer's with each course matched to a a very well-chosen wine. Everything was superb, but the standout dishes for me were the Malaysian dancing prawns and the cheese platter (especially the cheese platter - a sublime combination of French brie with truffle, pear paste and honeyed walnuts on crispbread). The service is good and the atmosphere intimate, but relaxed. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will be back.

My wife and I have dined at Mercers on at least four previous occasions and always left more than satisfied but tonight was slightly different. The food wad as always brilliant (tks Stephen) but the service was noticeably inattentive. It may have been the table we were seated at (right near the register) but we felt quite forgotten and extremely unspecial. We had to ask the wait staff for absolutely everything, except the water. Quite a shame as it's normally a brilliant experience here. Thanks again Ute & Stephen, I hope you don't mind the honest feedback but perhaps you need to be conscious of this.
Degustation - just do it!. My first experience at wine matched degustation, and now I'm hooked. Ventured out to Mercer's in Eltham courtesy of the Entertainment Book and we now head out there a couple of times a year for special dinners.
By no means cheap, the meals have been consistently excellent.
The ambience of the restuarant has always been great, with friendly and knowledgable staff.
Highly recommend a visit if you are in the area and fancy something a little bit special
Mercers is inner city fine dining for the lucky folk in the Eltham region. Stephen Ute's degustation menu is a variable showcase of local produce prepared with sophisticated yet careful precision. Well worth the visit and a fantastic experience especially when Stephen joins you at the table to share your thoughts ( something he does regularly ). If you live in the inner city, the drive up to Eltham won't go wasted.
Scrumdiddlyumpscious!. I came across this restaurant through Spreets and decided to go with my friend as part of my birthday celebrations.
This was a very warm and charming place upon entrance and the hosts were most accomodating. From the moment we ordered (which was a main and a dessert) we were surprised with homemade bread rolls of different shapes, sizes and flavours and a complimentary appetizer of a mushroom soup in shot glasses which was absolutely divine.
My friend and I both ordered the stuffed chicken which was beautifully presented and tasted even better. We both chose different desserts and my banana and merinque were the best thing I have ever tasted.
Although this was a pricey place, I think you should try it at least once in your life and maybe leave it for a special occasion only eatery. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience.
Where happy diners say "if fine dining is meant to be passé then why is everyone enjoying the food and the cosy atmosphere so much" just look around.
