Beautiful WFPB and Vegan Food. Well worth going to talk to the wonderful staff, eat and enjoy the gorgeous atmosphere.

A quaint little cafe where you can choose to indoors or outdoors (in the arcade) but be aware it can be busy outside with families, parents, kids etc. doing their shopping.
The food is good, simple fare and my kids enjoyed the chicken pies.
Service is friendly, food fresh and a nice selection on the menu.
Food is very fresh too - quality of it is high.
Lots of parking around.
If you're after some privacy whilst you're enjoying your brunch or coffee then this is not the place. But if you get some enjoyment listening to the banter between barista/owner and staff then come on down! Being a very small space (I think there are only 3/4 tables from memory) it is very cosy and communal...There is no menu as it changes daily...and most of the meals were displayed in a deli fridge. The barista delighted in reciting each and every meal in the display fridge to us. I had a vegetarian lasagna which was very good and the coffee wasn't bad either. The only negative was that there are no prices on anything .

My sister and I were craving a good coffee and some even better vegan dessert yesterday and with the help of Papa Bear in Eltham that's exactly what we got. It was our first time trying this local cafe and it won't be our last. It is tucked away in a alleyway off the popular Main Street in Central Eltham, we only knew of it as we walked past their sign the day before and obviously checked them out on instragram!
We ordered two almond milk lattes, which were superb. Really smooth and creamy. One gingerbread man, Anzac cookie and the last caramel slice. All vegan. That caramel slice was AMAZING! Ahh we wished there was another one but it clearly shows how good it is as they were sold out before midday. The cookies were great aswell, had lots of flavour and perfect size if you wanted a quick coffee and snack. Great for kids aswell.
We were served by one of the owners (the husband) and he was lovely. He was taking us through all their vegan options, (and there is quite a lot so if you want a guilt free snack head over to them!) really accomodating for us and the waitress who brought everything over was lovely! You can tell their focus is to serve great food with friendly and welcoming service to their homely town of Eltham.
The inside is quite small with their counter display and tables and chairs along the back wall so we opted for the outside seating. We noticed they have a breakfast and lunch menu and will be back to see if they deliver the great standards in their meals.

Food is always great with a small and select amount of options, but enough. Often happy to customise or make. Something from scratch.
The atmosphere is always happy and staff are really friendly and take time to get to know their customers! Allow yourself some extra time if you are in a rush - because they are so friendly and they prioritise conversation and care of customers over speed, if you are rushing to get a coffee before a meeting, it may take a little longer than one would expect.

How cute is this little place? I went here today and ordered a soy chai and it was the absolute best I have ever had!! The cabinet was covered in different sweet treats and I'm kicking myself for not getting one- they seriously look amazing! The service was also a 10/10, so friendly and willing to help.

Lovely little place, went there with a friend on Sunday. They don't offer lunch on Sundays, only breakfast, but the cook was happy to make me a vegan wrap anyway which was delicious. The chai latte was also great.
Famous for its coffee, but also chai late is awesome. Little cup with lid baby chino is my son's favourite. I miss them on weekends.

Tiny little cafe with awesome people. Staff were lovely and they can actually make a cup of coffee. Different food which was a nice change (veal sausage roll rather sausage mince) with plenty of vegan options. Will definitely be going back.
Simply does best coffee in Eltham (which isn't saying much) , but the coffee is really good. I mean up there with good inner city cafes. Well made, good beans, right grind , temperature perfect, all in all good time. :)

Axil coffee? In Eltham? My, what a time to be alive...
I must have driven up and down the main strip twice looking for this one, and walked by it too before noticing the place. But don't give up, as although hard to find you will be definitely rewarded when you do.
Papa Bear, located in a nonchalant arcade off the main strip, is a small "hole in the wall" joint to pick up a takeaway cup or sit down for a few minutes and enjoy one. Unfortunately due to the size of the cafe there is very limited seating, but the light-hearted, jolly staff make up for it and make you feel invited. The owner especially, is always laughing and smiling. And they know their coffee too; Papa Bear manages to bring Axil up to the north east, and they serve it strong and well.
There isn't much on offer food wise, but their gorgeous cake selection and light nibbles can certainly tide you over.
It's not one of those places you will sit down for a long time and eat, but it's perfect for those "inbetween" moments where you just need a quick cup. And the inviting nature of the staff and cosiness ensures that you will be coming back.

Papa Bear is a cute little cafe in an arcade in the Eltham shopping centre. We dropped in for breakfast one morning on our way to Research. The service is friendly and casual; there is no written menu but we could choose our own combination from a number of different options such as toast, eggs, bacon, spinach, mushrooms, avocado and/or granola and French toast.
My poached eggs and spinach were perfectly cooked and my companion's selection of bacon, mushrooms and spinach looked good too. Both were casually but artfully piled on a couple of slices of ciabatta toast. The coffee is reputed to be good but I had a nice pot of tea. While we were enjoying our breakfast the muffin man arrived with a basket of muffins covered in a cloth. These were soon displayed in the window onto the arcade and looked as though they wouldn't stick around for very long at all.
If I'm ever in Eltham again I would happily go back to Papa Bear. It is rather cramped and not very warm on a cold winter's morning but the food, service and convivial atmosphere make this place a winner.
Best Coffee In Eltham.
This place is technically speaking the best coffee in town, that is if you want coffee on the go. What lets this place down is the fact that it is situated in a dark little spot making it far from ideal too catch up with friends. This is the coffee you grab when your by yourself or your off somewhere else. It's a shame because this truly is the best coffee in the area as they use axil coffee and deliver it with love from an owner and staff who are so friendly. They should expand and open another shop in the area to catch the clientele who also would like to sit down in nice surroundings and catch up with friends or family.

Lovely food & great service. My friend and I visited Papa Bear last week following a recommendation by another friend of ours. The food was absolutely delicious. Service just wonderful. Atmosphere was happy and cosy. Everything is made on the premises including an amazing selection of gluten free meals and desserts. Just perfect. We'll definitely be back.
A lovely tiny cafe, very friendly service, such a homey feel. I just had a toastie but even that was very nice, quality ham and bread, and good coffee too.

Surprised. After struggling for so long to find a cafe in the Nillumbik area that can make a decent coffee, Papa Bear comes as a god send.
Places around Nillumbik always serve their coffee too hot and over extracted but not Papa Bear. The coffee is roasted strong enough to work in milk coffee, and the service is brilliant.
It's a joy to find a place offering single origin so far out of the city. I will defiantly be returning soon.

The best coffee in Eltham! A small place tucked away in the Eltham arcade that is bang on trend. Although it is only a small nook within the ever expanding suburb, it somehow encapsulates the atmosphere of Eltham: the staff are friendly and very welcoming, regulars are known by the staff and well looked after and the food just hits the spot! I recommend this place to all who love good coffee and fantastic service.
Love this place!.. Staff are so friendly. Really aim to please. Healthy and yummy food. I ordered a salad (after being offered a little sample portion) that was loaded with delicious, healthy ingredients & fresh flavors. Love the casual, cool atmosphere too.
Best coffee in Eltham!. Thank goodness I finally found and discovered Papa Bear! I'd virtually given up after trying all the obvious cafes in the town, even the newest additions, and was resolved to drinking weak, insipid, poorly made, burnt, awful tasting, needing sugar stuff... Not at Papa Bear! This is a fabulous little cafe where those who work the coffee machine know what they are doing, and created a lovely double ristretto latte for me with a good strength and pleasant taste. They are friendly, the food looks great, it's like a little city lane coffee shop - but in Eltham! Yay, good luck to you guys, hope the rest of Eltham give you a try, lesson for me, don't judge a book by its cover!
Great little spot. Cute little hole-in-the-wall with just enough space to sit and enjoy your well made coffee. Ben, the nicest guy in the world, who runs it, knows how to make a decent coffee. (If you are after a giant mug of overboiled milk, try one of the many other choices in Eltham). Lots of GF treats. Healthy treats as well as more indulgent options, and I think they are all made by Ben's wife. Apparently the banana bread is amazing. Small menu but it is a small place. Lunch options such as salads too. Definitely worth a visit.

I’ll have to take photos of the food next time! I had a fresh savoury tart (kind of like a quiche) and it was super fresh and tasty for a quick bite. The coffee was spot on!

Google “best coffee in Eltham” and you find Papa Bear. I concur. This hidden gem delivered on its reviews. 5star coffee (and I’m a Heidelberg coffee snob I might add),with some decent brunch options, and a warming atmosphere.
The food and coffee is excellent along with the great friendly service from Steve and his staff.
