Review Chow Garden Chinese Restaurant - Epping

Alan Osman
Called and ordered via phone and was told the food would be ready for pick up in 15 minutes. I arrived and paid 20 minutes later and was told to wait in my car and the food would be brought out to me. Another 5 minutes pass and no food to be seen. I ventured back inside to ask if the order was ready to be bluntly told 'no' with no ETA or apology. Finally got the food after half an hour. Terrible communication and non existent customer service. The fried rice left a lot to be desired. Hardly any ingredients apart from the rice itself. This was the last time I'll be ordering from Chow Garden which is a shame as I know it's an Epping institution.

My local Chinese Restaurant to go. Curried chicken is our son favourite dish. Mr. Chen and staffs are so polite and humble, always bring a superb service to customers. New automatic coffee machine purchased a year ago to serve new coffee menu.

Place makes good food. But there customer service is rubbish. Open at 530. Answer phones at 4. But can't take orders till 530... seriously.... eh and meh... never will I buy again and advise all to stay away.

Food and service has gone down hill with new ownership. I went here for 20 years and had no problems. But now the food is disgusting. Waste of money.

Great food and great service, dishes are awesome. Strongly recommend Chow Garden if you want some quality Chinese food with family and friends.

Food is not bad if you're hungry... But it's extremely average. It's a tussle between quantity over quality. I'd rather have quality food served in a 650ml container than an average box of food served in a 1000ml container. I was willing to support a local business but after 6 attempts, where each time I had to come home and add salt and eggs to my 'special fried rice' and 'Nasi- goreng' and re-adjust to not taste my food bland.. it's not worth it. Sorry guys!

Been going to Chow Garden restaurant for over 25 years and the food has been very good every time, never had a problem.

Quite disappointed with the quality. The price is very cosy comparing with the quantity and quality. I would expect a little more than a below average taste. Won't be back for sure.

I wouldn't say this is the best Chinese restaurant I've tried. Average would be the best way to describe the food. Dinning in is probably the best, at least you get the traditional Chinese restaurant feel. We've tried getting take away a couple of times but it just isn't the same.

Have been going to Chow Garden in Epping for a while now. Truly can not fault this place the food is amazing. Had all vegetarian dishes the other week. They where all spot on. Very lovely people and great service. Highly recomended.

I ordered here a few weeks back, I ordered honey chicken but with lemon chicken strips. Confusing and annoying I know but I'm fussy :( anyway. I got my food and was disappointed that my order wasn't conveyed. I put that aside, I understand that it's sometimes hard to get my order across. But as I'm eating my honey chicken, it was in chicken balls, wasn't authentic at all. Tasted like defrosted chicken and watered down honey sauce. Sorry guys, you used to produce really nice Chinese food but it's gone down hill.

A very western Chinese restaurant which is fine. I only have come here once and ordered the fried rice which was more than ok. Next time I will be a bit more adventurous and try something different.

Having not had Chinese for a long time, I decided to try this restaurant with a friend.

Entering this establishment I loved the set up, traditional in every way with spiral spinning tables, lanterns and everything Chinese.

I have to admit, the place was dead. Not one person seating in.

Getting the menu we ordered the following:

• Prawn Crackers
• Spring Rolls
• Chow Garden Combination
• Special Fried Rice
• Honey Chicken

The prawn crackers were just ok, I've had better. Nothing really special.

The spring rolls come to the table with a sweet chilli sauce. The consistency of them were great. However with the added sauce, it wrecked them, a little over sweet if you ask me. The filling of them were flavoursome, but a little thin and hollow in my opinion.

The next dish which was one the chef suggestions came next. The combination was utterly beautiful, such extravagant flavours inside the dish and the prawns, beef and other vegetables were simply delicious.

Special fried rice was light and exuded perfect tasting notes, the only let down was the prawns were just not right.

Now the final dish was my favourite. I haven't had honey chicken for so long and the one I had from this place was fantastic. Sticky, salt and sweet all in one dish. Large portion and the crushed notes on top of the chicken was a wonderful idea and suited the dish.

I have to admit, while no one dined in part from my friend and I, the amount of patrons getting take away was extensive. I counted 14 people while I was eating.

All in all, a mediocre restaurant with some terrific plates.

I have been ordering there since 2007.. the standard now is very poor.. especially the special fried rice.. hardly anything in it but rice... they have lost me after many years of supporting them..

An Epping institution. My parents started dining here when it opened late 1970's, early 1980's. Standard, run of the mill suburban, "Aussiefied" Chinese food. Pricing and decor as expected. Service friendly and quick from Patrick and family.
The Swine
The Swine loves a good rice dish and tonight opted for the tried and tested special fried rice variety. The Chow Garden is the main Chinese - eat in or take away - in Epping Central. The Swine also ordered the spicy "Ran Dang" Steak and some crispy chicken with his rice as part of a mixed combo. Unfortunately the order was taken down incorrectly but the problem was fixed when the Swine tried to speak to Chow Garden staff in broken English Chinese. Thats right the Swine doesn't speak Chinese very well. The Swine is great at charades. The meal was good - the Ran Dang was almost poison hot n spicy but the Swine loved this. Unfortunately service here isn't a strong point - incorrect orders, translation issues with very young staff but the Swine made do. The Swine has been coming here for years - nothing has changed - its all part of the charm and experience. Free prawn crackers is a nice touch with big orders.
Mediocre Chinese food. The place smelt like grease and the chairs and tables were covered in grease. Even the bottle of water they brought out was covered in grease and was not clean. Off putting. Service was poor. Food wasn't that great. Wouldn't come back.

Good food but the service makes it terrible. Always stuff up our order. Every single time! We make it perfectly clear and ask to repeat the order they repeat it correctly but then get home and it's just never correct.
The best Chinese! Love this place, pity about the outdated setting but everything else is great. Love the steamed dim sims and the fried ice cream.

Disgusting! DO NOT EAT HERE!. Always have issues when we eat here but last night topped it! Half way through my chicken and corn soup i found a piece of metal in my soup! When we rang to let them know not to serve to anyone else the person we spoke to could barely speak English and didnt offer any refund!
Will never be eating here again!!

Caucasian-style "Chinese" food. We visited this place once, and that was more than enough. First, it was a surprise when my Malaysian-born husband and mother-in-law wanted chopsticks. I'm not sure why. The service was lousy and the decor was tacky as hell. Worse, the food was not even remotely authentic! Needless to say, I would not recommend this place unless you're after bland, westernised "Chinese" food.

Best Chinese food in the northern suburbs by far

This place has massive portion sizes, the food was good and the waitress was friendly. I was appalled when it came to paying. The male who took the money did not give me my change, and was quickly rushing me off so I wouldn't notice. I am more than happy to give a tip, but his behavior really pi##ed me off. I didn't bother argueing, but that cunning behavior has cost him 3 customers.

Great food and quick service, it has become the family favorite for a quick and inexpensive meal at short notice. The family and I have been back over 10 times now (they still don't remember us). Favorites... Garlic chicken, chicken & cashew and the mandarin fried steak.

Amazing Amazing Amazing!!!! We got take away steamed rice and three dishes. Every single dish was perfect the vegetables were cooked perfectly and the meat was lovely heaps of sauce in each dish. The serves were generous!! And the prawn chips oh my they were sooooooo good the best I've had in a long time!! Would totally recommend this restaurant!!

If you're craving decent Chinese food, please stay away. Chilli chicken came red, dyed with red food colouring. It was more sweet than chilli. Do they not know what 'chilli' means? We took a few spoons and walked out. That's how bad it was. Veg was wilted and absolutely horrible. If you want good Asian food, go to a restaurant owned and run by a Malaysian, otherwise everything is cooked in colouring and is extremely cornstarchy and sweet. I feel like I was gonna get cancer just by looking at it.

This is your typical suburban Chinese restaurant. All the usual favourites and some Malayasian dishes as well. I recommend the short soup, satay chicken and the special fried rice is not all oily

Just had 1 of the banquets for lunch, only 2 of us, very generous dishes. Singapore noodles were a let down, very bland, everything else beautiful!
