Review The Hungry Fox Cafe - Essendon Fields

Kings Acai Australia - Wholesaler
This is a super funky looking cafe. I love the house set up. It has a enormous playground for kids and mothers with prams. The menu has a lot of variety and the food is delicious. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is cozy. I love the different sizes of tables, which can host big and small groups. It would be a good place to celebrate special events.

Great food and good customer service. Hot chocolate and little lamb was amazing. Kids friendly.

Wow. I really liked this place. The space is so big and relaxing even though it’s very kids friendly as well (there is a playground), the staff are so warm and accommodating and the food was astonishing good for a place which is in the middle of what looks like a golden mile for cars. I got the Red juice (beetroot carrot apple orange) and the zucchini bruschetta mess. I was debating what to get honestly because everything looks soooooo good here. But I am trying to be healthy so this zucchini bruschetta w two poached eggs, mozzarella, mint and tore bread was right up my alley. I could never eat a whole piece of bread anyway but I love bread so this was perfect for me with little pieces of bread dotted around the dish. The zucchini was beautifully grilled and the whole plate was quite light but filling. I wanted to grab their cheesecake (for hubby! Not for me! 😛 Well ok I might have some too 😃) but sadly they sold out (at 10am!) oh well, that’s good for my hips and my hip pocket 😂

Second time here and I just love it. Food was delicious and a great place to meet up with friends for coffee. The atmosphere is lovely with a small fire burning and comfortable seats.
NR Anderson
Nice cafe with reasonable service. They have a separate area for odering takeaway but still friendly. Due to the hard surfaces and loud music it is difficult to hold a conversation inside. Food and coffee quality are excellent and it's got great parking. I'll come again.
Anton Cuschieri
Fantastic cafe, the food and service is excellent and the decor is really nice. Prices are reasonable and the Eggs Benedict was the best I have had in a while - the eggs and hollandaise sauce were done to perfection. The coffee is excellent the staff are very friendly and accommodating. Definitely has the Lamana quality behind it. Can recommend this place for breakfast or lunch.
Mark Marky
Almond flat white was spot on as was my vegan breakfast which I just picked of the menu myself, wishing there were more vegan options great place.

Nice cute little place and busy

Great atmosphere, friendly service and delicious food, although the menu isn’t as extensive as the original cafe. My kids however loved their popcorn chicken meal and the playground was definitely a winner. Will be back for sure!

Great little cafe in such an unconventional location! You can see why it gets so busy! The staff were great and friendly. Food and drinks didnt take long to come out. The food is delicious. The menu was very reasonably priced. An added bonus is the outdoor play ground! Great for the kids! Be mindful that they dont take reservations so either get there early and go there after lunch time rush! I would definitely come again!

Wow! This is a great place in so many ways..... the food is delicious, the staff are warm & welcoming, the atmosphere & design & architecture is stunning..... & it’s family friendly with a playground. 10/10. We will be back - thanks Hungry Fox

Friendly and efficient service, the food was so good, shared the chicken burger and gnocchi, coffee was spot on. The fit-out is so nice, the look and feel is so warm and inviting. Highly recommend!

Limited breakfast options for people who can’t eat nuts. A couple of mistakes made with our order. Food itself was quite nice, but a bit more variety would be good.

Loved the atmosphere, love the playground and most of all loved the food!! I had the coconut prawn salad and it was to die for. Can’t wait to get back there.

We had lunch there today, great meal and coffee and a really good playground for our two grandsons.

Great concept! Our order got stuffed up but not a biggy. Will be back again.

This place is amazing! The LaManna’s have done it again!

Thank you La Manna, a perfect cafe for kids & parents

Food:<br/>I ordered the Eggs Benedict and it was delicious and has become the best Eggs Benedict I've ever had. They replace your traditional bread with a potato rosti and it completely elevates the dish.<br/><br/>Service:<br/>The waitress who attended to us seemed tired and looked like she didn't want to be there, but I understand that we all have our days. Otherwise the overall service was standard and the waiter/waitresses were polite and attentative when you asked for their help.<br/><br/>Overall:<br/>I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a nice place for brunch. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is calm but lively. The architecture of the cafe is very modern with a slight industrial feel which adds to the calm ambience.

Went here with family, staff were grumpy with no personality at all. It took a long time for someone to take our order and we couldn't get the waitresses attention without calling out as they made sure to avoid eye-contact with tables in between bringing food out. We had two kids with us excited for pancakes but were told when we tried to order that there wasn't any available. Would've been considerate to be told when we walked in or sat down to order. We also were served a warm milkshake which is not only disgusting but a food health and safety hazard. I have to say the food was nice but not worth the hassle. This little cafe is by La Manna but does not compare in quality or staff.

Very friendly stuff, nice atmosphere. Yummy good. Will surely visit again.

A hidden treasure of airport west, Hungry Fox café is a wonderous hotspot for a brunch fix. The ambience is absolutely beautiful. Resembling a barn on the exterior, the insider is cosy and decorated with a modern rustic feel. It was one of the most beautiful brunch spots I had seen for a while.<br/><br/>Considering such a warm welcome, it was disappointing that unfortunately, we were met with unfriendly service. The waitress who took our orders was short and blunt with her answers, was not enthusiastic at all, carried a negative attitude and seemed to not care nor listen attentively when taking our orders. This was reflected when the incorrect beverage was brought out. However, I was nothing but kind, polite and forgiving as I understand as she may have just simply been having an off day. We all have those. I will say this experience is also something that should NOT reflect the whole team, as the rest of the staff we spoke to throughout the experience were lovely. <br/><br/>In terms of food, the quality and taste were amazing. The dishes completely made up for the unfortunate bad vibes that were left from when we had our orders taken.<br/>The avocado was perfectly ripe and incredibly delicious and we must commend the kitchen for packing it on and layering both pieces of my friend’s avocado toast, as well as generously topping the dish with chunks of avocado pieces (as usually brunch places can tend to be quite stingy with the amount of avocado they put on each dish).<br/>My hot chocolate was rich in flavour and was drowned in chocolate topping and froth- just the way I like it. The addition of marshmallows was also a nice (and delicious!) touch.<br/>The Benedict dish was incredible. I made a wonderful choice in swapping the ham out for salmon, and my mouth is watering just remembering the taste. I need not go into too much detail about the perfect avo as it was consistent as our other dish. The potato hash was the perfect complement to the flavours and itself, was super tasty, soft and perfectly fried. Topped with the most perfectly cooked poached eggs drowned in hollandaise, I would love to go back to order this dish once again. One of my favourites for a long time!<br/><br/>I’m left very much a happy brunch-enthusiastic-gal indeed, and looking forward to my return visit to Hungry Fox!<br/><br/>Food: 4/5<br/>Ambience: 5/5<br/>Service: 2.5/5<br/><br/>Overall: 3.5/5

Cafe was in a hard to find spot, didn't know it was connected to Lamanas. Lots of business people and families were there.

Hungry fox is impressive in both food and architecture. Walking into the cafe felt like walking into a snow lodge, but it's in Essendon! We had the Padrona (ham, egg, truffle bechamel and sourdough), pineapple fritter and smashed avo on toast. All the dishes were amazing. There were unique elements to each dish and it was a pleasant brunch experience for us.
Lovefood
Came here due to the high ratings. Felt disappointed, decor is beautiful, food was average, ordered the squid spag and wagyu cheeseburger. Wouldnt recommend. We had table water, when we came back from our smoke our water was gone and not replaced until the end of our meal when we had to ask for it. Feels like staff lack attention to detail. We felt like we weren't being look after on during our meal. Service was slow.

Best Brunch Ive had in a while ! I had the smadhed avocado which was To Die For!and my friend had the zucchini bruscetta ! Chai was amazing too! architecture amazing as well I will definitely be back

This gorgeous hidden gem of Melbourne is well and truely worth heading too! It’s basically next to DFO Essendon which is perfect cos after my shopping I headed straight to this place that’s like a giant barn! Love it! The food here is absolutely delicious 😋 This food is so simple but unique it shows you can create really delicious and amazing dishes with simple and yum ingredients. The breakfast risotto was talked about a lot, so I gave it ago. And I LOVED IT! I didn’t think I would but fudge, it was good! Then the pineapple fritter was insane! Like insanely good! Get onto it people! Then we had the Benedict and avo on toast, all perfect and just can’t go wrong with these classics!

My husband hardly ever suggests a place. His default position is “whatever you feel like” but he went against his nature to recommend the Hungry Fox. So I knew it must be good. <br/><br/>The car park was full before the cafe was full. You’ve been warned! We got there before noon and the cafe was about three quarters full but by the time we left, there was a small queue. <br/><br/>The decor was classy but with all the hard surfaces, it was also pretty loud. With a playground attached to the cafe, it was definitely kid friendly although our daughter didn’t end up playing in it. <br/><br/>The menu had a cool QR code that let you see pictures of the dishes on your phone. Very clever. Based on the pictures, we ordered the following:<br/>1) Earthy Greens - excellent all round and I was surprised with how full the nutty romesco made me feel.<br/>2) Padrona - the bread was thicker than expected. It was delicious but we didn’t get a hint of truffle. <br/>3) Chicken and chips from the kids menu. The kid mostly ate the chips and nibbles tentatively at the chicken. I tried some of it and it tasted wholesome and lightly seasoned, as expected for a kids menu item. <br/><br/>Service couldn’t be faulted but the wait for the food was quite long. <br/><br/>The team at the Hungry Fox have something good going on here and we would definitely come back again.

Love everything about this place! The eggs were well cooked, the breads were crusty on the side and soft inside, the waitresses were friendly! Top place to enjoy your relaxing brunch guys

Off the track a little bit well worth the drive!<br/><br/>The moment I walked into this cafe everything was amazing.<br/><br/>The staff were friendly and helpful.<br/><br/>Coffee was great. Food was amazing!<br/><br/>I ate breakfast but the lunch food/salads looked super tasty.<br/><br/>I will definitely be visiting again.<br/><br/>If this cafe were closer to me I would be a very happy regular

Brunch just got a whole lot better at The Hungry Fox Cafe with the launch of their brand new menu. We recommend the breakfast risotto, Pineapple fritter along with Nutella and banana toast 👌 <br/><br/>They also have a great play area for the kids! <br/><br/>LaManna Supermarket

Really nice little hidden cafe! I got the earthy eggs made gluten free- my lord that polenta! It was perfect for when you feel like skipping the bread but still enjoy a ‘homey’ b’fast. Super cool interior. A couple waitresses could smile a bit more but otherwise would go back.
Two Sheds
4.3 nails it.<br/><br/>This is a nice stylish looking place. It’s housed in a modern building that looks fresh and inviting from outside, to me anyway. A ski lodge in the middle of an airport and its surrounding shops was how my partner described it. A little harsh, I thought. Beautiful landscaping outside the place. Of all things, I particularly love the black mulch they’ve used. It exudes class. It’s stylish and airy inside the cafe too with an impressive cathedral ceiling. As Illa J puts it so eloquently, all good. So far anyway.<br/><br/>My partner chose the mixed greens dish. Very nice it was too. Kale, thrillingly crisp string beans, asparagus, hazelnuts, Spanish onion, maybe some lemon juice and maybe a dash of yoghurt and Parmesan too. Fresh as a daisy and very reasonable for $8.50. Really tasty. A good little dish.<br/><br/>My long black was nicely presented on a board with a card with some details about the coffee. It was a Lygon Street single origin, Dulima beans from Colombia. Very impressive beans. It was a beautifully made coffee as well. Strong, rich and delicious. Same with my loved one’s flat white. <br/><br/>Service was good here too. Cooly efficient. It’s a good place. It’s a must visit in these parts.

Genius idea with the playground. I personally love La Manna so I had high expectations for this place. Service and quality didn’t disappoint and great variety. Will definitely return

Pretty good breakfast place. Probably not as good as lamanas its sister restaurant but was overall great service and even got a free muffin on the house

I took my kids here this morning to get an early coffee before it got too hot. Sat close to the outside area and was ignored. Other patrons who arrived after me were served before me, I decided to leave after nearly 20 mins even though I had gone to the coffee machine to get some boiling water for a bottle & ask if it was counter service. On the way out, I was told thank you and goodbye - I told the manager that I wasn’t even served and it was a disgrace. Hope they improve their game and this is a one off - maybe not a lot of staff on. Very disappointed.

Delightful atmosphere in cafe.  Amazing food at fair prices.  Great menu choice including Gluten Free options.  Beautiful presentation of food.  A gem hidden in an unlikely location.

Expected high food knowing it was linked to Lamana but wasn’t expecting this! Wow my lamb was sensational recommend to me by waiter and well worth it! Kids popcorn chicken and chips was good but hero definitely the lamb! Staff super friendly and playground area sensational. They are spot on the money for what I am looking for in a kid friendly , adult pleasant, sensational food lunch venue. Well done !! Highly recommended!!!
Our Foodie Finds
In search of new local baby/child friendly cafe's in the area, we noticed this little gem on the way to our regular shop at LaManna Supermarket. We were surprised to find out that the LaManna group actually own this one. Makes sense really as why wouldn't you expand your reach in the market, and to have a child friendly zone makes it even better.<br/><br/>Lots and lots of wood. If you're lost and can't find this place (which is pretty difficult to miss) just look for a wooden house set out in the midst of all of the car dealers and you can't go wrong.<br/>We've since come back here a few times and have enjoyed our experience however we have noticed that since our first visit, the food has somewhat dwindled a fair amount. Just seems like they're pushing out food without tasting it or perhaps caring what it tastes like. Don't get us wrong, the food isn't bad, it just wasn't the same as the first time we went and noticeably became more so when we brought some friends with us.<br/><br/>Food is reasonably priced and we ended up spending just over $60 for the 2 of us which included x2 meals, x2 coffees and a smoothie. Not too bad at all. We had breakfast type meals and we were pleasantly satisfied.<br/><br/>The service here is quite good and always with a smile although we have noticed on a couple of occasions now that there are some staff delivering food to the wrong tables and/or not knowing where the food should go. Both hilarious to watch yet concerning.Outside there is a large play area for the kids to play around in, with a large play gym and open grass area for them to wreak havoc. If you're after a place to go out and have a nice meal as well as keep the kids entertained, check out Hungry Fox. Perhaps you'll even see us there too but till then, this is Our Foodie Find.

Ate here for lunch, another LaManna franchise! Delicious goes without saying! My friend and I had the eggs hollandaise and a burger. All I can say is well done LaManna you never fail to impress! Well done! 👍👍

Will go back very soon to try some food, did not even know about this place until I was car shopping and was desperate for a coffee. This review was based on coffee experience and a playground that made me think hallelujah a cafe that thought about parents. This cafe was made for you if you ever had difficulty putting a pram in a tight squeeze, this is for you when your toddler had a tantrum and you just needed them to be an adult because everyone is eyeballing you, this is for you when you wished there was just a kids menu, this is for you when you did not have to eat and run, this is for you when you just wanted to be able to drink your coffee hot, this is for you when you had to make the hard decision of going to a cafe or the park. Thank you Lamanna for providing me a cafe that I can enjoy with the kids, will be back ASAP
~ The Real Review ~
The atmosphere is great here & it was quite busy when I came (10:15am on Thursday) it’s not table service which is disappointing but it is owned by LA Manna so that was to be expected. I had the Açai & Berry Smoothie Bowl which was too crunchy for my liking but it does say buckwheat crumble on the menu so I knew it would be crunchy. The fruit was all freshly cut & didn’t have the oxidation around it. Which is why I ordered it to check if it did. <br/><br/>It has a kids play ground attached at the cafe so if you have toddlers?? It’s a good place the grab brunch/lunch. Well until next time Zomatorians!! Big Foodie Out!

The playground is the reason we decided to drive from Coburg to Hungry Fox for lunch. It’s not far, but more effort than we’d typically spend to have lunch at a cafe. Playgrounds will do that to parents with young children!! My wife wanted to scope out a potential “play date” location for her friends, so we came here on a Saturday morning for an early lunch. I had the lamb dish, which may be a seasonal meal because it’s not on their current Zomato menu. My wife ordered the karaage burger, and my daughter had the kids’ popcorn chicken and chips meal. <br/><br/>First, the drinks. My wife’s smoothie was great, as was my cold drip coffee, but I’m not overly picky about cold coffee as long as it’s very cold and doesn’t taste watered down. I also had a long black that was made very poorly. Way too much water! They’re supposed to be 70ml or so, but what I got was probably 150ml. Most baristas drink espresso shots or long blacks, so this was a pretty unusual error for a trained barista. <br/><br/>As for food, my lamb was amazing. I think it was lamb ribs and chops, and it was very moist and flavourful. The roast (?) vegetables were just OK. Slightly soft, maybe watery? Anyway, overall very satisfactory dish, and I’m glad I ordered it. <br/><br/>My wife’s karaage burger was very tasty! I only had a few bites, but it was super crispy and breaded. It doesn’t taste much like actual Japanese karaage at all, but whatever. Their fried chicken was good, and I guess they were aiming for generically Asian flavour and people know that karaage is Japanese. <br/><br/>Popcorn chicken was dry and flavourless. My 3.5 year old, who loves fried chicken, chicken strips, chicken fingers, karaage, etc, didn’t eat her meal. Maybe it’s because she’s 3.5 years old, but it’s more likely that it wasn’t very good, because it really wasn’t very good. After the first bite, I ate the rest of her chicken. She did eat the thin, crispy French fries though. They taste a bit like McDonalds chips, which is a compliment!!!<br/><br/>The sandwiches in the window look amazing, and it’s something I may try next time I’m here!! <br/><br/>If it weren’t for the playground, I probably wouldn’t come here just for the sake of having breakfast or lunch. It’s far away, and not that convenient unless you’re already going to Lamanna for groceries, or shopping for a car. The food is pretty good, and smoothie was good, and the coffee was just passable. <br/><br/>However, the playground makes it worth visiting. I’d give the place a 3.5 out of 5 if I could. <br/><br/><br/>

A unique little cafe with an Alpine vibe and a playground perfectly fitted for patrons with children. Unfortunately, the food and menu is a little underwhelming and fell short of expectation. Overall, the entire experience was just average.
Fat Tony
Ordered the burger with double smoked bacon. I found the bacon too smoky and the burger was very salty. It was messy to eat and you could not taste anything in the burger but the bacon. The place was nice. Service was ok. Disappointed that there was not many salads to chose from.

Had brunch here today and ordered the Eggs Benedict with a coffee. First of all I was really impressed with the atmosphere and the modern industrial interior design - what a cool set up. The service was quick. The food was great EXCEPT the poached eggs were undercooked... I love runny yolks but I really can’t do runny egg white. Other than that I really enjoyed it. Coffee as good too. Would definitely come back.
Melissa Szerda
Food a step up from La Manna cafe, and the fitout is really nice. I had the earthy eggs which was lovely, good kids options, but they probably need 1 more savory breakfast option as the menu is a bit limited. I went for brunch on a rainy week day so it was fairly quiet but can imagine it would be super busy on a nice weekend day.
Melissa Wang
Excellent food at a reasonable price. The cafe is physically stunning and is very inviting once you walk in. Family friendly environment. Will definitely be back

Great atmosphere, quick service, good quality breakfast and the fresh oj was amazing. Simple yet faultless. Definitely recommend for a casual great breakfast or lunch!

Much better than their in-store cafe 'Hungry Fox' by Lamanna is another great addition to the area. Great coffee and burger was fabulous. Hubby had a hot chocolate but the glass was lined with coconut so impractical to drink. Playgroup looks awesome if you have kiddies.
Foodcritique 101
Quite an exquisite set up. The people at Lamanna have most certainly outdone themselves with this new fine establishment. Friendly service, the food was good, we sampled a few breakfast items such as the Smashed avocado, Eggs Benedict and the earthy eggs (small flaws but nothing overwhelming), coffee was spot on. The fit-out iself is nice, the look and feel is so warm and inviting. The architecture is stunning and it's family friendly with a playground for the kids!<br/>An overall 8/10 experience. We will be back - Thanks Hungry Fox 😀

Brand new in the Essendon area, Hungry Fox is a great addition to the region. With fresh produce and some interesting menu choices this is a very good brunch location. You can go any time and have breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea. The service is very friendly and helpful. You are greeted with a welcoming smile when you walk in. There is a playground for the kids just out the wide back door so the parents and other diners can relax with their cuppa and the kids can still be entertained with parents able to keep a keen eye on their little ones. The area in Essendon Fields where Hungry Fox is located is a little out of the way so unless you’re shopping for a car at one of the local dealers you may not wander past it. You have to intentionally decide to go. And people are. The place is packed. It’s reasonably large so you don’t have to wait long for a table most times but it’s already very popular for good reason.

Loved the design and style of this place, feels so warm. Food was amazing, great quality ingredients, so fresh and bacon was cooked perfectly. The yellow juice was also spot on.

Beautifully decorated cafe newly opened in Essendon Fields. Owned by the same people as La Manna supermarket and cafe so you can expect nothing less then great.<br/><br/>We tried both the double bacon cheeseburger and fried chicken kaarage burger and they were impressive to say the least. Packed with plenty of cheese and sauce The DoubleBacon Cheeseburger definitely provided that greasy component you want when treating yourself to a hamburger. The chicken burger was delicious too; a light and refreshing meal. The Japanese style batter along with the kimchi slaw and sesame mayo complimented each other beautifully. Perfect spot to grab lunch or breaky on a cold winter day!
Mattdick94
First thing you’ll notice is the beautiful cafe. Had a European feel to it! We ordered both the chicken and the beef burgers! I was a big fan of the beef, it had a very clean taste and a great mixture of flavours! The chicken had this beautiful Japanese flavour to it, leaving me very intrigued! Topped it off with the green smoothie! Beautiful underlying mango taste! Presentation of all good is terrific

The Lamanna juggernaut continues to grow. <br/>The venue sits amongst the car dealer ships in Essendon fields so if you've had enough of car sales men for a few hours you can get away here and grab a btie. Food is very similar to Lamanna which is good quality tried and trusted breakfast and lunch options.

Arrived just before 9am on a Saturday and the place was almost empty. By the time we left around 10:30 there was a line out the door! <br/>Food is spot on. Milk & Cookies is a seriously sweet dish that wouldn’t be out of place on a dessert menu. <br/>Coffee was good but could have been warmer. <br/>Will be back to try the Benedict. <br/>Lunch menu also looks enticing. <br/>Great space with an impressive fit out.
Melb Brunch Queen
Meal was delicious and service was great. There’s a cute little playground out the back. Good spot for mums with kids. Great ambience as well
The Truth About Food
We ordered two of the Earthy Eggs and they looked delicious. The flavours were nice however there was nothing on the plate to cut through the richness of the dish. The polenta, eggs and hazelnut romesco, all creamy and rich, the wilted greens weren’t it’s saving grace unfortunately - it was too rich so we couldn’t finish it. Also, the hazelnuts were lost in the romesco, couldn’t taste them at all. The venue looked really beautiful walking up to it and after walking in, it looked even better. Stunning place to have brunch. The service was great so I’ll go back a try something different.

Exterior looks like a Swiss chalet and inside does also. Great ambience and great service to match the food. Friendly staff and quality of food is superb. Kids playground too for families. Highly recommend

We had been wanting to try here since it opened and it didn’t disappoint! It was super busy on a Saturday but we got a table quickly. Really well furnished and an awesome playground for the kids. Coffee was excellent and food came out really quickly. We had the polenta with greens, poached eggs, mushrooms, hazelnut Romesco purée and sage and it was delicious. I’ll be back to try other things on the mine for sure. Only downside is that it’s not open Sundays!
Lauren Demetrios
Gorgeous venue, very well designed and executed to allow the cafe to flow nicely and it is quite spacious which is quite refreshing.<br/><br/>The staff were lovely and accommodating, coffee was great too! However, the menu is too basic. The hungry Fox has all this hype before it opened the doors and I was so excited but that menu is very boring and does not cater to everyone. I would not return due to the in creative menu.
John
Amazing Coffee! Big crowds so the wait was little annoying but the staff handled it brilliantly and were very accommodating. Decor was great. Will detour just for a coffee takeaway.
Ravenous Melbourne
Warm and welcoming interior, friendly attentive staff, delicious food and heaps of takeaway options. Another successful eatery by the LaManna group!

Excellent food and service. Well done for the first day of trading. Had some great food and the coffee was on point. Know that La Manna supplies the produce and that is why the quality is so high! Will be back
