The Austen Tea Room is one of the cutest and elegant high tea places I’ve been to. When you walk in, it looks like a normal cafe, but if you have a high tea sitting you will be taken to a beautiful home-like atmosphere. I was impressed with the size of the venue, and that we were seated in our own room. It was all very stunning, and I found my visit to be very calming and relaxing as they played some lovely quiet music.
Firstly we were presented with a savoury high tea stand with a variety of sandwiches, pies, quiches and sausage rolls. I loved that there were a lot of variety as the last high tea I went to only provided us with two sandwich options. The pies and sausage rolls were also nice and warm.
Next we were presented with the sweet high tea stand. My favourites on this stand was the macaroon and chocolate slice. Over all there was a lot of food! The high tea itself was a bit heavy and perhaps less sandwiches were needed (while hopefully keeping the variety).
The scones were a bit doughy but my friend enjoyed her scones a lot. They were also quite heavy and filling!
I wish there had been more tea selections as I prefer green or peppermint teas but I am pleased that they constantly filled up our tea pot.
Over all it was a wonderful experience, and for $45 it was a lot cheaper than other high teas I’ve been to, and this was very well valued in my opinion!
Really friendly service and excellent Devonshire teas. The menu has a great range of options for breakfast and lunch. A delicious selection of baked goods and yummy milkshakes. The cafe has different seating sections and is great for small groups because you can get a room to yourselves. The atmosphere is relaxing and homely. I love this place!

Today my friends and I enjoyed a sumptuous High Tea at ‘The Austen Tea Room’.
The staff were polite, attentive and very welcoming.
The decor was just beautiful and charming and the atmosphere very homely, yet elegant.
The selection of food was amazing, from finger sandwiches, hot savory pastries, scones with jam and cream, and petit fours. Not to forget the endless cups of yummy tea.
It was a great way to spend an afternoon with girlfriends in a beautiful environment.
We will definitely be back :)
Looking for a new place for breakfast I passed a rather busy looking place in Essendon I thought I would give a try instead of doing a u turn to go back I chose instead To go around the block and half way around I stumbled across this place that was reasonably quiet but looked very quaint so I decided to try it out instead of the other and I'm glad I did I was greeted by a girl with a beautiful smile and told to sit at a table soon after she bought me out a menu and a glass of water inside very small and cosy decorated as an olden day tearoom complete with chandeliers on the roof I ordered the big breakfast and a large capuchino both arrived very quickly to the table and even tho the big breakfast was not the biggest I've had it still was cooked beautifully and tasted superb I found the service great and the hostess very charming and bought a small cake from there collection when leaving to sum up I'd advise all to give this place a try as I will again another day

Always loved going here for a quiet coffee or tea. It's an elegant & cozy place with nice relaxing background music.
Started off with a hot soy chai latte which was full of life and up there in taste. I have to mention that their Caesar salad with grilled chicken was one of the best I've tried and the croutons are nice and chunky but semi soft not like some where you can chip a tooth!!
The home made Pumpkin soup was delicious, fresh and it's the stuff your Grandmother used to make or still makes:) To top it off I had their baked New York cheesecake which was fine but would of liked it a bit more softer on the inside.
Definitely still worth going and I love their decor and especially the front soft material classic chairs!

The Austen Tea Room is absolutely perfect!!! Its tucked away from the busy Mt Alexander rd, so its nice and quiet whether you choose to dine inside or out! The staff are polite, attentive and welcoming! I bought my mum and grandmother here for Mother's Day and we were absolutely blown away! The decor is beautiful and charming , and the atmosphere is homely, yet, elegant :)
Coffee = 11/10 (absolutely spot on! and i'm a self-confessed coffee snob lol!)
Tea = 11/10
Sweets and savouries = 11/10
I will certainly be returning!

Quaint and cute venue with loads of natural light. We came in for a quick lunch and shared a veggie focaccia, which was filling and tasty. The staff were thoughtful enough to cut it in half for us. Would come back to try other menu items.
The Austen Tea Room offers you a unique experience for all Jane Austen fans. It's a must try in Melbourne and a definite if you are holding a special girls day out or just want to have a simple High Tea. The rooms are beautiful and are themed after Austen's favorite characters including Emma and Mr Darcy. What makes the Austen Tea room different is Eileen the owner. A Jane Austen enthusiasts she knows everything there is to know about Austen's history and 5 minutes alone with her and you are transported to a time and place long forgotten. Make sure when you book you have your numbers set I think the minimum might be 6. It's a special and unique tea room and is connected to the Jane Austen society. Words can't describe the sense of joy that comes from visiting. You can also visit just for a quick lunch or go the full tea party. Highly recommended and make sure you get a Austen history lesson oh and look out for her little dog too ❤️
I gave this place a try only because I'm a big Jane Austen fan! The street location and the building really does suit the theme. We ordered the veggie breakfast which was given a name after one of the pride & prejudice characters and I had scones. The earl grey tea was very nice, it had strong pleasant aromas. The veggie breakfast was delicious but nothing out of the ordinary. They've forgotten about the scones, after waiting 30 minutes I had to remind them about my order....it was worth the wait though, it was fluffy and delicious. I would go there again only because of the peaceful, girly atmosphere. The customer service was friendly.
A good friend recently celebrated her birthday, and I wanted to shout her to high tea to commemorate the occasion. We hit up The Austen Tea Room in Essendon (yes, literally the opposite side of the city) for their sweet and savoury high tea over the holidays. It is SO fresh and feminine - you can almost imagine yourself transported to Austen's England. The food was substantial - well worth the $40 price tag - with the traditional high tea offerings nestled together on floral china with a matching teapot of good quality, strongly brewed English Breakfast. We left thoroughly satisfied.
The service is cool and friendly. However, the food is pretty expensive. But really, lovely settings on the way i went to the toilet so i gotta take a pic to show you guys, had the sandwich and tea and it's lovely, would come back again

So it's a total ploy for Jane Austen fans. Name your menu items after Austens' characters and hang some photos from the much loved movies and voila!! Austen mania, right?! Hmmm, not really. Campy cute, yeah. True ode-to-Austen, not really. And yes, I can say this confidently as I am a Jane Austen fanatic! But in saying all that, our brekkies were absolutely delicious! Great value for the money, classic 'big brekky" style toast, eggs, beans, mushrooms, tomato, hash brown, and for hubby bear some sausages and bacon. Would we go back? If in the area, sure. But wouldn't tell other Austen fans to get their hopes up too much. Just go for the food, and let all the Austen references make you giggle a bit!

Last Tuesday, I stumbled across The Austen Tea Rooms in Essendon. As a scone connoisseur, I judge these ones to be magnificent.

SANDRA! SANDRA! WHERE IS MY COFFEE???. I feel compelled to say it doesn't matter if a cuppa comes at you in a glass, cup or paper cup, its who makes it for you AND YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR GOING TO GET.
The ultimate barista, the entertaining personality, and sparkling natured that she naturally dishes out, she makes us always feel welcome. With Sandra there are definitely no short cuts.
we are determined to follow you if we dont see you again, ( even if we have to pay top dollar) We will give it another shot. Grrrrrrr

Absolutely warm welcoming. A friend nominated to have high tea here, I am not to fond of cafe, s, I came once before just for breakfast, I wasn't pleased with the burnt omelet, so thought try high tea would be diverse. I have to say upon arrival we were welcomed by a lovely lady which she sat us down and even introduced herself. Very professional and very pleasant. The way she was always catering for us made the afternoon tea so special and delightful indeed. We wish there were more friendly and passionate people in the industry likecthis delightful gal, with a lovely smile. Food was fantastic, lovely rooms, just a breeze. We will be back with double the people, and we want the lovely gal with long black hair to serve us again( we hope) thank you again, 10/10
I'd always driven past this place and decided to try it for the first time. I was welcomed right from the start by a friendly waitress. I decided on a piece of cake and coffee. For a workday late morning, it was busy! I was seated in the middle hallway of this beautiful high-ceilings, chandeliers, polished floorboard, antique tea house. I was transported to a moment back in old world time. I felt like I was in a grand classic home back in England. Calming, classic music played in the background. Surreal! Cake & coffee came promptly (affordable prices!). Pics of Jane Austens home on the walls. I had my meal with the stunning sun beaming through the glass panels of the side door. Amazing place. I'm glad I came here and will definitely be back!!!!!!

Great quality and lots of food! Though the staff didn't have high tea prepared for us, they quickly remedied their mistake and gave us complimentary sparkling to make up for the wait. The decor is pretty, matching lace and pink delicate plates. Having Mr Darcy staring at us brooding while we are wonderful sweet things was just lovely. Could develop this more, with a courtyard, I can see so much potential! Well done Austen tea rooms.
Excellent service, tasty, well presented food in a lovely environment - indoor and outdoor. Lots of nice touches such as tea made from leaves, in a pot. All staff very accommodating to requests. Very reasonable prices for good quality and good variety on the menu. Recommended.
Perfect Afternoon Tea. From the napkins that matched the tea set to the delicious food and bottomless cups of tea my Book Club of ten decided this was the best Afternoon Tea we had experienced. We were seated in a delightful private room for 10 (more traditional cafe seating also available) we loved the chandeliers, prettiness of the table setting and the finger sandwiches, scones, savoury tarts and little cakes were exactly what we expected to receive and delicious. A bonus was the convenient (for us) location in Essendon and excellent value for money. Highly recommended!

Although its not really my style of cafe, I find this place absolutly gorgeous. An old house turned cafe, it offers a more relaxed and civilized cafe experience than most. I love the rooms at the back, some that only consist of one which is great for a family brunch. The food is good and consident, but nothing extraordinary. However their simply perfect creamy porridge with honey is sometimes just what I need on a cold winters day. The freshly baked scones and cakes look fabulous. I would deffiently recommend the Austen Tearoom, especially if your after a more personal and homey dining experience.
