We were at History this weekend. We tried their breakfast menu for the 1st time. There were 6 of us eating (adults and children) and we all absolutely loved our meals. My 9 year old son said his Big breakfast (from the adult menu) was the best Breakfast he had ever eaten! My husband and I commented on how the eggs were cooked to perfection.
We have also eaten lunch and dinner previously, and we can not fault any of our meals.
Absolutely recommend this place if you enjoy good food!
History has to be my favourite go to cafe for breakfast in essendon and now dinner!! Called in after work Thursday night and the owner Marcus couldn’t do enough for me. Whipped up a delicious Calamari salad with a glass of Pinot Gris!! Perfect for a light meal after a crazy night in retail. Food, service and ambience is great. Highly recommend this local cafe.
We did mother’s day at history yesterday. We had two big meat eaters, two conscientious eaters, two kids, and a 80 year old mum / grandmother who very rarely tolerates anyone’s cooking..Result...everyone was more than pleased, price was right, food exceptional, the Shiraz on tap was awesome and mum absolutely loved the slow cooked lamb (unheard of) PS. The waitresses... gold !!
Very nice place...coffee was great. One criticism - from where we sat we could smell the air freshener in the disabled toilet. It wasn’t very pleasant. The disabled toilet door needs to be kept closed. Apart from that, it was very pleasant.
Great food and coffee and very friendly have become a regular keep up the good work. Love the new menu
If you haven't been already get there, great food, breakfast, lunch and diner or even just a quiet relaxing after work ale, friendly staff, great service, oh and did I mention the food
Beautiful delicous food awsome music will definetly come for another exciting food for dinner
Lovely meal with family on Mother's Day. A great place to dine
Service and food were both excellent...would highly recommend ;)
Love the new menu! Creative and mouth watering. Can't wait to try everything!
Love everything about this cafe. Highly recommend
One of the better cafes in the Essendon area. I really enjoyed my time there and I will definitely be returning soon!
Had the best pulled pork in a brioche bun here.
All the ingredients were fresh and top quality.
Their coffee is outstanding and staff was friendly and helpful.
Will definitely be back for more!
Excellent food and very friendly owner. Would recommend to everyone who wants a nice and professional service. 👍🏻
We live nearby and often go there for a coffee and breakfast or lunch. We absolutely love this place!! Food is always amazing and they have the best coffee in the area. My asbolute favourite dishes are smoked samon and smoked angus brisket
The food was amazing. My new favorite restaurant in Melbourne!!!!!!!! We ordered a grilled chicken teriyaki pulled pork buns. Both dished were 5 stars+
Great steak sandwich expecially with that home made bread ,making it really juicy and soft.the coffee was one of the best i had in a while.
The interior has a great warm feeling not to mention the polite staff
The menu is constructed with quality, everything I tried came out perfect, next time have to try the pizza.
Loved the burger..so juicy and full of flavour
Best coffee ive ever had! Great layout, spacious with nice decor (comfortable access for wheelchairs/prams etc.). Great food lots of variety, great service. Nice place to go for both breakfast or a drink/dinner at night
I have been here few times and loved the food especially steaks and loved the wine too . We ordered history mixed grill which was amazing. All the grilled dishes are made in Josper Grill which tastes smoky and delicious. My wife liked Cevapi ,smoked Chorizo , Calamari. We cant wait to dine in this amazing place again with our friends.
Food, coffee and service always on point here! My favourite place to go in Essendon!
My partner and I had our lovely lunch here and we ordered the calamari, barramundi and lamb. The calamari was absolutely delicious, it wasn’t thick with crumbs and not chewy at all. The barramundi was well cooked and presented with the celeriac puree, it was a good combination. My partner got the skewered lamb on a bed of couscous and it was cooked perfectly. The ambience and interior of this place is spot on and I love the barn door feature as well. They open till late and would be a perfect place to get together with friends and family. Overall it’s a good experience there. Highly recommend👍🏻
I visited History Grill for breakfast and had a great time. It’s in a gorgeous location and has a good vibe.
I ate the bircher muesli which was super cute! It was decorated with mini meringues and berry coulis. It was filling and tasty. I also ate the waffles which were presented nicely but were a tad dry. Unfortunately the sweet items on the menu are very fixated with passionfruit which isn’t to my liking BUT is tasty nonetheless.
I would definitely love to return one evening for tapas and wine!
Cozy place, great ambience, awesome staff... and to top it all off... super delicious food... and did I say it was easy on the pocket, too? Thanks a lot for having us today.. we shall be back for sure!!
Im not much for words, but have been here a number of times and i keep coming back for more. The History burger is amazing. The steaks are amazing. The calamari is something like i have never tasted. Not even gonna start how good the lamb and pork belly is. I have tried just about everything off the menu and love it all.
The space in itself is very nice and the ambience wonderful. I love the fact that you can enjoy a nice drink at night and friday nights the live music is just what you need. I will always be back here time after time!
A great spot in Essendon for a steak and wine night!
These guys are doing grilled dishes like you wouldn't believe! They've installed a Jasper Grill oven which gives dishes a smokey and delicious flavour. For that reason I'd say this is a perfect date night to enjoy some top quality meats at reasonable prices. (Although I'd love to come check out their brunch menu too!)
DISHES WE ATE:
GRILLED KING PRANWS:
- OMG !! You HAVE to get this dish, you receive 3 prawns and it comes out in a sizzling pot type dish, and the smell is just INSANE! We even had someone from another table come up to us and ask what we were eating. The taste is delicious, you can really see how the grill oven makes such a difference to taste here!
HOT CHEESE DIP W/ FLAT BREAD
- Again, DELICIOUS! It's super cheesy dip with some tomato and other herbs in it, with hot flat bread! Honestly where can you go wrong?! Just check out my photo of the cheese pull!
450g RIB EYE (MB + 4)
- A good sized piece of steak (on the bone) that is melt in your mouth good! Seriously delicious, I had it with the mushroom sauce although I think that could have been a bit more creamy (personal choice) and it came with chips and a side salad.
- SCOTCH FILLET (MB + 2)
A smaller sized steak that was tender and juicy with that smokey taste. Paired with a good wine you really can't go wrong!
Overall this place is great to have a few wines and enjoy a fabulously grilled meal! I definitely recommend coming here :)
Can't fault it .From the food to service .My favourite is the steak which was cooked perfectly and juicy not to mention the Smokey flavour .Defently will be comming back.
Such a cool place even to just chill and talk over a drink. I do recommend their grill items. Such amazing steak there. Staff are super friendly and helpful. Would definitely return here. Thanks team
Another of our family gatherings at this fantastic venue. Fresh great presented food accompanied with perfect wine. Service with a smile and a great atmosphere. Thank you History.
Great atmosphere, delicious modern food.
Wednesday/Thursday is steak night, so hard to find a good steak at this price.
A must visit if you live in the area, already has more than its fair share of regulars.
4.2.
History Cafe Wine Bar and Grill is located in Leake Street in the North Essendon Village. It’s very accessible by tram and there’s good parking nearby. It has a lovely light filled ambience, both traditional table seating and bench seats against the wall.
There is an interesting selection of wines from small vineyards in Australia, New Zealand, France and Italy. You can order their 'on-tap' Sauvignon Blanc or Heathcote Shiraz by glass, half litre or litre carafe.
We shared an interesting mixed entree. Hummus with pita bread; perfectly cooked calamari strips with some rocket and aioli; outstanding home made arincini balls filled with spinach, sun dried tomatoes, parmesan cheese and aioli sauce; and a small chicken tenderloin , infused with various herbs and spices. A generous and interesting entree for two.
For mains, I had crispy skin barramundi, with sweet potato puree, crispy kale and grilled potatoes. Not a huge serve which was fine as the fish is rich and the meal is well balanced. My partner had the "History Burger"; a very generous burger with cheese, slaw, pickles, relish, bacon and a generous serves of medium sized chips.
For dessert, I had a raspberry and rosewater pannacotta and my partner had a beautifully presented nutella waffle, with ice cream and chocolate sauce.
We drank Hunky Dory Pinot Grigio from Marlborough, reasonably priced at $45, given the quality.
Given the title of a cafe/wine bar, the quality of the food was above expectations. One can also order "small bites" to have with good wine and wood fired pizzas.
We would recommend visiting for either some wine and a light meal or a longer meal over dinner. For a longer meal, try to sit at the front alcove which would be quieter on a busy night.
Real rating 4.1 ⭐️
We had visited History Cafe Wine Bar & Grill for dinner and it was a pretty lovely experience!
We had ordered several small bites and 2 mains and the food was absolutely delicious!
For the small bites, we had ordered the soft shell crab and pulled pork sliders, calamari and fried chicken ribs! The ribs were such a delight to have with its crispiness of the skin and juiciness of the meat melting into your mouth! Calamari was cooked to perfection being golden and tender! Sliders were pretty good too which were like mini burgers but were a little dry.
For the mains, we had pork belly and rib eye which were both beautiful! The pork belly was so succulent and juicy that it melted into your mouth which was like heaven! The rib eye was my fave for the day as it was cooked to perfection and every bite made me go back for more! The meat was so soft and juicy and easy to cut it was just unbelievable!
Overall we had a good time and would love to visit to try out their brunch menu in the near future! 😍

Solid food and great service. Had a burger, nice and juicy with plenty of flavour and came out quickly..but not to quickly. Would definitely go back.
Just happened to be hungry when I was out grocery shopping when I saw this new restaurant. I checked out the menu and saw my three favourite foods in one plate, kale, sweet potato and barramundi. So, I immediately grabbed a seat and ordered. The service was great with my dish meeting my very high standards. Been back a few times since and it hasn’t failed to disappoint me.
We bought a voucher for four from Cudo. Somehow I didn’t book it correctly, at the beginning the staff asked us to dine in normally and use the voucher later. After a few conversations and arguments they are okay for us to use the voucher on the day. Staff was kind of friendly... it’s chefs choice for the entrees and it’s pretty delicious. The calamari was nice. We ordered porterhouse steak and crispy skin barramundi for mains. I do not recommend both. The quality of the steak is not good enough. For the sides chips are crunchy and full of flavour, salad is fresh and delicious. The barramundi skin is crispy but the meat is over cooked. It tastes dry and there’s not much flavour. Then the dessert again we don’t have choice. Panna Cotta is the best we had on the day! Creamy and rich, just the right sweetness and it balances perfectly with the raspberries... Tim tam with ice cream is so so. Ice cream has no flavour. If I buy Tim tam and ice cream from supermarket, I can make a better dish myself... anyways for the value of the voucher it’s pretty good meal for four. I may come back to try the breakfast menu but will not return for dinner.
I don’t hand out 5 star reviews very often but I think History cafe deserves one. The salt and pepper calamari was absolutely amazing, the steak was cooked perfectly and the drinks kept on coming! Great atmosphere, great food. I could recommend this place highly enough!
Great place! delicious food, nice decor and great service. We had entrees, mains and deserts here and all the food was so tasty and well presented. We will be back!!
Bold and bright, History will greet you with pops of orange before giving way to a more naturally styled interior and a menu that caters from morning until night!. History Cafe Grill– The Overview…. Food: History platter, pulled pork bao, chicken ribs. Ratings:Food: 4.5/5. The details…
I’ve been meaning to visit this cafe, wine bar and grill for a long time and finally made it recently. It definitely lived up to our expectations! We went for a late brunch so we were lucky to try some breakfast dishes and some lunch dishes. Win win!
I loved the overall look and feel of the place, really nice clean colours, stylish fittings and modern feel.
The food was delicious, a big menu and definitely something for everyone. We tried the cheese dip to start which was phenomenal. Melted cheese with fresh warm flat bread. A cheese lovers dream!
We also tried the potato rosti Benedict with ham hock and fresh apple. A rich but super satisfying dish. Really well balanced. Highly recommend!
The burger was also delicious, with a traditional Balkan style meat patty. They specialise in grilled meats and it shows. Served with coleslaw, cheese, bacon and chutney and chips on the side. So good!
I recommend visiting this cafe and wine bar!
Thanks for having us!
We were lucky to be invited to visit History Cafe Wine Bar & Grill on the first day of summer. We sat outside to enjoy the warm weather with our cocktails.
The menu has a wide selection of both seafood and meat dishes. We noticed a part of the menu use the Josper Oven, a type of oven which creates the perfect char and crisp on meats whilst maintaining a tender and juicy inside. As meat eaters we ordered the History Feast Platter which consisted of a range of meats such as Smoked Chorizo sausage, lamb rump, pork belly, gourmet burger with a side of fries and salad. The highlight was the lamb rump which was perfectly marinated, tender and crisp on the outside.
They also have a great selection of drinks from cocktails to wines!
If you are looking for a traditional Balkan feast, then this is your place. Notice the Smokey taste? Well they use a Josper oven which is the hottest indoor barbeque available. It has a front door that, when closed, ensures none of the natural moisture or flavour escapes from the food cooked in it. Not to mention the service is awesome. We will be back.
Great food, great service, friendly and inviting atmosphere. Highly recommended.
Lots to choose on the menu.
I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and made good choices from the menu.
Amazing food, awesome atmosphere and great service.. every time I visit I feel like I’m home.. Spanish baked eggs is my favourite. What’s yours???
Great atmosphere fantastic service so friendly and helpful. Great food. We had delicious share platters and amazing desserts! ! My friends and I have been there a few times now and would highly recommend it!
I came here with friends on a Friday night, it was fantastic! There was live music on, it was packed it was great weather so we sat outside for most of the night. Staff were attentive, we loved all the food we had and they have a great selection of wines. The mixed grill platter was a highlight. The meat patty tasted so fresh and home made as did the capsicum chutney and it came with a generous serving of pitta. We will definitely visit again soon.
You might think that every thing you need to know about History has already been stated out in its name. It's indeed a cafe by day, wine bar and grill by night, but what you may not realised is that History pride themselves on their Josper Grill Oven. There's a section in the menu dedicated to meats cooked using the Josper Grill Oven and I was lucky enough to sample some.
Our party of 4 had the pleasure of sharing the History Platter, Salt Bush Lamb Rump and Crispy Pork Belly, and also a Grain Salad with chicken tenderloins and hot chips on the side. If there was one dish that stood out amongst the rest, it had to be the lamb rump. The meat was incredibly tender, and there was no gaminess to it, but instead a robust meaty flavour. The bacon and peas puree imparted a clean yet salty tang to the dish.
The pork belly was another standout, and this was due to the play on different flavours to create a light and balanced dish. The meats on the History Platter all possessed a lovely smokiness to them, and the capsicum dip was just delightful. It was great to be able to try the Pljeskavica, a delicious and flavourful meat patty that was a staple of Balkan cuisine.
Even the simple Grain Salad could not be faulted. The addition of hummus lent a depth of flavour to it, and for a while, I was able to pretend that I was eating healthy and not stuffing myself with meat.
History's strength not only lies with the food, but also the coffee. My skinny latte was smooth and strong, and I don't think my dining partners had any complains about their selections too.
It was lovely to be able to chat with the owner, and have him take such good care of us. Thank you for having us over and for the delicious meal!
Can I just start by thanking all of my 3,000 plus followers on Zomato. I am very honoured and humbled by all of your support.
Now onto this review I went here for lunch on the weekend. Initially this is a nice cafe with a rustic feel about it, with a nice bluestone wall. There is a new chef in this European style cafe.
The service was friendly and welcoming.
There was a group of 4 of us and we shared 4 dishes plus some tasty chips. We had a lamb which was tender and moist and it was served w a delicious pea purée.
We had a platter pad food such as a chorizo, pork belly, pickles a delicious hole made capsicum dip. Yummo lol I could have eaten that all day.
We had pork belly w a turnip purée which was probably my favourite dish. The meat was so tender.
Then we had grain salad w chicken and this was delicious. it was well balanced and it balanced the meal out really well.
Oh and I was lucky enough to try a Spritzer in a can which was awesome. It wasn’t too sweet and not too bubbly... it was just right lol
Thanks to the owners for having us. This place is a must visit!
And I have to thank Bearabbit and our respective partners for he laughs.
Bearabbit
History cafe is best for family, we went for Sunday lunch and food was amazing and staff was also friendly with everyone it was busy time when we walked inside and all staff members were looking after every table which is very nice .we haven’t try dinner menu yet so we will come back for dinner thanks for beautiful service
Best coffee in the area by far. Food is also great, especially the čevapi which are my personal favourite. Staff are always extremely friendly as well. I eat here regularly and will continue to for a long time.
Been looking for a nice place to eat at night and have some wine around Essendon, we found this place and enjoy all of it! The waitress was lovely and warm, had a pork belly dish and barramundi. Really love the cauliflower purée they are serving with the pork! Would be coming back! Thanks!
Found a new neighbourhood gem. Dog friendly, great wine list and AMAZING dessert. I first went here mid-week and had wine and their poached pear dessert, then returned on the weekend with the dog to have brekky. Great menu and very lovely service.
Popped in Friday night for a quick drink and catch up with a friend and left nearly 5 hours later! Great service from friendly staff and I was really happy with the wine list - great bubbles, sangiovese and shiraz.
Zomato dragged me into this place. Lovely set-up I
might say, ambience is great and soft lively music playing. Service is exceptionally good, lovely staff here. Food was just ok for me, but the deconstructed Tiramisu was awesome. Coffee ‘flat white’ was just perfect. This joint deserves higher marks!
Great selction from the lunch menu, really different as the flavour speaks for itself comming from the fire. Will be back.Really friendly staff and have a warm welcoming. The interior design is great and really different towards other cafes in the area.looking forward for the nights to open
Have been here a few times for breakfast. Great easy location. The menu was great the first time with a varied selection. When we went back more recently it felt the breakfast menu had simplified. Food and coffee still had good flavours. This place looks great for lunch or dinner, although they dont open for dinner i think this is something they should consider.
When we walked in we were very surprised that Saturday 12.00pm, it was empty. Only one other table, 5 people in such a large space. The venue was beautiful and the layout and fittings definitely work well for their Cafe, Bar, Grill concept.
I had read great reviews about breakfast/brunch and was excited to try. When we went to order we were advised they were now serving lunch and not taking any more breakfast orders. I was a little shocked, I'm so used to most places having all day breakfast menu. Nothing from Lunch really stood out probably because I did not get a chance to eat breaky and was now having to consider fries. I ordered the Crispy chicken burger, slowly steamed bun and shoestring fries. We also had the wood fire calamari roquette pesto, hazelnut, green leaves. The burger was enjoyable and the steam bun was super airy. However, fries with no dipping sauce and presentation was average. Overall the dish was dry. The calamari presentation, on the other hand, was very nice and I felt we received two dishes from different kitchens. It was a tad chewy but the overall flavors very nice.
On a positive having to order Lunch put me in the mindset to also be ready for an alcoholic beverage. The Aperol spritz is by far the best I have had in Melbourne. The coffee was also very good.

• The urban list is claiming your seasonal local Mushroom dish is Michelin class. Why is it no longer on the menu?
• The breakfast menu has been given the thumbs up, why don’t you make this an all-day menu? I now understand why you were empty at 12.
• Never thought I would be having the best Aperol in Essendon. Serve me a drink like this, I can easily forgive and try again.
We absolutely love this place! The food is absolutely amazing and the coffee is just as good. The service is great and attentive. We have been there a few times and it’s never disappointed us!
Great service, coffee and food. Decor is unlike any other wine bar in the area. Great for a drink if wanting to stay local and plenty to choose from.
Hands down, best brunch this side of Melbourne. First time I’ve ever tried kangaroo ham - divine! The duck liver parfait is so decadent, I wish I could buy a jar to take home. Dishes are full of flavour and balanced. It’s obvious from the first bite that the chef has been around. Everything made in house, locally sourced and organic. Love love love it.

History is a great light filled venue in essendon. Only negative about the location is that parking can be painful at times.
We both had the waffles which were perfectly sweet and with some added maple syrup were perfect. I also had the mixed juice which I wasn't a fan of. It was too "earthy" in taste.
The food here is as good as it looks! Beautifully presented and super tasty. I had the Baba ghanoush on sourdough with poached eggs, walnuts, kale, herbs and pomegranate...10/10!
The staff were very friendly and inviting. Food came out quickly and the coffee was probably one of the best cappuccinos I’ve had. A must if you are ever in the area.
With every component of every dish made intricately, as well as a carefully designed menu by Michelin-trained Raffi Hazm, it’s no surprise that everything came together so perfectly.
From the complex, cured duck ham to the seemingly simple waffles, the near-flawless execution, coupled with the delicately balanced flavours and textures of ingredients used in such creative ways, all made for a thoroughly enjoyable brunch fare that’s definitely one of the best we’ve seen for a long, long time.
We were absolutely blown away with the quality of the food we had here. Our meals tasted amazing and the coffee was excellent. The service was absolutely impeccable as the staff went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our experience here. The cafe was also beautifully designed and the atmosphere was buzzing. What a pleasant surprise. We will definitely be back here! Ps the broccoli croquette is to die for!!
Delicious meals that you wouldn't be able to cook at home. Lovely ambience, not overcrowded with tables! Very friendly staff. 5/5 would recommend.
New menu is fantastic. Every thing we have tried has been excellent, sourced from local ingredients and is food that most would struggle to reproduce in their own kitchen.
Best cafe in Essendon
New exited menu at📍 @history.essendon! ☀️🍴☕️Family breakfasts, special lunch menu and magical recipes!
Out favorite one is 🍴🦆☀️ 21 house cured dry aged duck ham, poached eggs 🍳 , duck liver parfait, shaved fennel 🌿 with orange gel ! Sounds fantastic, isn't it?
Visit & enjoy 📍 History Cafe Essendon ❤️🍴☕️
My freinds told me that they had a new brunch menu .Had to check it out and have no regrets at all.The place to be as the menu is so modern and diffetent. The food complements the design and has a great flow and feel to it.
Service was great; food awesome ! Really great vibe!
Also spotted some essendon players there enjoying a coffee.
Would definitely come again at night and enjoy a beer with their pork slides 👌
Food was amazing, service was great and wine options amazing!!!! Would highly recommend for brunch, and coffee is the best I've ever had!!!!
Unbelievable food, the quality that is produced here is amazing. Staff are very professional and polite. Always a pleasure having dinner here.

Loved it !!!!! Its a must :) Crap shell sliders .ohh it just melts. Its to die for ..The new Lamb dish -I went with a couple of friends and had sides ( chips/salad ) great sharing wish with a great bottle of wine.History great place to check out with friendly staff /Amazing Food and most of all great selection of wine....
Amazing dining experience, menu is exciting with a great infusion of Spanish & Croatian influence, mouth watering steak and entrees
Perfect Ambience with staff to match.
Good food, good wine and beer selection. Really enjoyable culinary experience. Place looks great aswell. Try the sreak. Will definitely be going again.
This place has only been open for a few weeks and in my opinion is making its mark on the area. The inside is visually appealing and the staff are extremely friendly and inviting. The food was pretty good, however i find this place to be more of a place to have a drink with some food rather than the other way around. The wine we ordered was really nice and light and they also have wine on tap which I thought was rather cool and unique
Awesome place! Great breakfast. Service was prompt and friendly. What impressed me the most was that the food was a little "different" from any other cafe! Come and try this amazing "different" ‼️
This place is exactly what the area needed. The cevapi is the best your going to find in Melbourne. The chicken wings had great flavour and were juicy and cooked to perfection. The who place has a nice vibe and it's great to finally have a place in essendon where you can get a great steak.
A hidden gem in the heart of Essendon.
A perfect place to catch up with friends. Friendly staff and excellent service. Great coffee and a great range of breakfast and lunch menu.

Wow!!! Stunning! No words! 🤤
Good Food, Good People, Good Coffee..
History is Good!
Very lucky to be close by to this great cafe who offer top food and coffee. Krešimir and his team are always friendly and nothing is too hard. Located well with nice outdoor seating as well as indoors
Delicious brunch and cocktails. Service was great. We unfortunately remembered to take photos by the time we had already pretty much finished our meal as it was too good.
Had a family lunch on Sunday 30/12 and all 7 of us absolutely loved it. The food and service were both excellent. We had a variety of dishes...lamb, steak and Barramundi. The oven they use (can't remember what its called) adds a delicate and unique smokiness to the food..not over bearing at all. The Restaurant had a really pleasant vibe to it. The Manager or owner also chatted to us and explained the dishes well. Highly recommend it..I will definitely back..as too all those who dined with me
