Review Andy's Yum Cha House - Essendon

Where do i start, the food or the service? Both were absolutely fantastic! Our waitress (who was the only waitress there as it's quite small, though they have an upstairs function area) was amazing. Always seeking feedback, very attentive without being in your face the whole time. She was perfect. The food itself was made wish fresh ingredients and you could taste the love and pride that went into it. The food came out quickly and was so good. This place is a hidden gem and we will definitely be returning! 10/10.

Great atmosphere, attentive and lovely staff, and good food! I'll definitely be back to sample some more of their menu. Their appetisers are very appealing. Would be great to have spare napkins on the table. And an option of chopsticks, as their cutlery is huge.

generally very pleased. very quick delivery. staff accommodating. just alittle pricey but oh well, this is not asia ordered statay skewers, sambal egglplant, honey chicken and fried rice satay skewers pretty good. sambal eggplant was super. only downside was alittle oily, had to skim off some oil. honey chicken no complaints. fried rice was great, not too dry not too oily. perfect will order again. thanks cherry blossom team please pass on this positive feedback

Ordered delivery via menulog for the first time, food arrived stove hot and 20 minutes earlier . The food was fantastic and fresh.excellent sized serves and friendly service
Johann Lim
Ordered Mongolian Beef, extra spicy, and got exactly that! 2nd time here and both times I liked the food a lot. Only thing is the music is tacky.
Sonia Reid
We visited this restaurant but left when we were told that we had to pay $10 corkage on our bottle of wine. As there were only 2 of us, this was $5 per person. Way to expensive!
Jane Campbell
Worst home delivery service ever.... I have given them 2 chances now but never again!! Waited an hour + 20min to be still told it would take another 25min!! And second time I tried thru uber eats thinking that would make them accountable... but same thing!!!
Jasmin Laffy
Recently under new management. Tried it out and the staff were super friendly. Would recommend the Chinese style eggplant chips!

Our old long time favourite, for many years Andy's Yum Cha house is literally like having Yum Cha in your own house! The staff are friendly, the food is authentic & always amazing! We never leave Andy's disappointed, it even surpasses some of the top end Chinese restaurants in Chinatown. Andy's excellent work & thank-you for being consistently of a high standard. See you soon guys for some Yum Cha

The food was disgusting. Dumplings were sticky and soup dumplings had no soup. The pork dumplings were all frozen and you can taste the difference. The hokkien noodles were bland and every single thing served needed soy sauce. Worse meal we have had in awhile.

For a quick and delicious mid week meal, Andy’s is one of our favourites. Always enjoyable!

Love this place. Great food at a reasonable price. Plus it's BYO

Couldn’t pay me to eat this again. Food was poor and that’s being nice.
Kerry Jane Allison
The food was fresh and delicious. Would certainly visit again.

Great authentic food cooked to order friendly service and byo really good value

Crispy pork dumplings + fried prawn rolls + Shanghai pork dumplings + comforting tea+ lovely ambience = for the win

I've eaten here many times and have always been most impressed with the food and the sevice. Their takeaway service is excellent too.

Ace!!!. Fast, fresh and friendly. Highly recommend.

This is very yummy...just wish they had toffee potato on the menu

Amazing service, food and atmosphere. Thank you for a lovely night.

Best Yum Cha, always fresh and super tasty! We are regulars!

We have been eating at Andy's Yum Cha for ages and it never fails to deliver

Are you open today!!! ??? It's an emergency

Great food & service!

We had yum cha today and it was better than our favourite china town restaurant due to the food being cooked to order. Particularly loved the prawn wrapped in bean curd and the pork and mushroom dumplings. Scrumptious!

Small and cosy local Yum Cha. Hong Kong style ordering system, where dishes are ordered and cooked on order, so no carts being pushed around.<br/>The Xiao Long Bao was the standout dish, deliciously balanced soup bursts out with each mouthful. I'm not usually a fan of this dish, but it was really flavoursome.<br/>We ordered the favourites that you would in any Yum Cha and all were great! Keep in mind, the restaurant is small, selection is also small but everything is done well. We will be coming back regularly!

Bad service. High price for small portions. Taste not up to standards for a 4 star rating. Not your traditional Chinese yum cha restaurant.
Feed.me.well
Ordered lemon chicken takeaway from Andy’s tonight- unfortunately it is inedible!<br/>Something wrong with the chicken. I can’t even give it a rating as I had a mouthful and disposed it back into a tissue. What a total waste of money.

How this place has so many 5 star reviews is beyond me...<br/><br/>Customer Service: Non existent - Walk in to the restaurant at 2:10pm and the only greeting I receive is... “kitchen is closing soon, hurry up and order”. Seriously that is the way you welcome your customers!? <br/><br/>Food Quality: Average at best - Due to all the glowing reviews I had high expectations about coming here but boy was I let down. Small portions and the taste is not even great. The Fried rice was the worst I’ve ever had in any associated chinese place.<br/><br/>Price: Expensive <br/><br/>Andy’s Yum Cha House is about as good as the attitude you receive from the man working at the front. Plenty of better places then here. Will never be coming back

Went for some lunch with a few colleagues as we were craving some yum cha. This place, we found out........its not exactly your traditional yum cha as there is no food carted around that you can pick up. Its more of an ala carte arrangement. Having said that, one can order small yum cha type portions or the full mains portions. The food was quick to come out to the table and was really nice. There was however just the one guy running around tending to every table and therefore wasnt able to be very attentive to any. Maybe there is generally someone else with him who was away.....I dont know. <br/>All in all, a nice semi yum cha place that one should definitely try if in the area and looking for some decent Chinese food.
The Street Foodie
A quaint little place which seems to be a humble family business. It doesn’t offer all the varieties that a classic Yum Cha House would BUT the food tastes pretty good! The dumplings are filled with a substantial amount of meat and the wraps are nicely steamed (not dry).<br/><br/>I would recommend the banquets, definitely value for money. <br/><br/>The only critique I would make is the service, I was afraid to order by the waiter on that day. Maybe he’s just short in words but we didn’t feel quite welcomed.. none the less he was very efficient and quick to act on requests. <br/><br/>Besides that, I’d definitely go here again if I’m craving a quick yum Cha experience.
Montse
Absolutely terrible service... the owners of the place treat paying customers like they were begging for food.. <br/>The food is very average more towards the low rank in terms of quality and the atmosphere almost none existent.. <br/>going back there?.. NOT!

Andy's Yum Cha House is a little, quaint store that is located in Essendon. There is plenty of parking available on Napier Street to allow peace of mind. Andy's Yum Cha House is one of the higher rated establishments in the area on Zomato - a rating that I am pleased to give first-hand confirmation of.<br/><br/>The store itself is not particularly big. However, an atmosphere of cosiness is undoubtedly present. Big windows by the front let in plenty of natural light. For those a bit more adventurous or with pets, limited outdoor seating was also available. <br/><br/>The shop sells food in Yum Cha style - Yum Cha generally involves small portions of steamed, pan-fried, and deep-fried dumpling [dim sum] dishes served in bamboo steamers, which are designed to be eaten communally and washed down with tea. People often go to Yum Cha in large groups for family get-togethers or celebrations. Andy's Yum Cha House is able to cater for crowds of any size. <br/><br/>Traditional Yum Cha establishments have trolleys of food that perambulate the area and the customers at tables pick what they want. Andy's has a more direct approach - order what you want from the menu and they will prepare it freshly in the kitchen and serve it to you. While somewhat detracting from a formal Yum Cha experience, Andy's is able to plate up food that you know has been freshly prepared. Sometimes, food on the Yum Cha trolleys can get stale - no one knows how long it has been sitting there for. With Andy's, this problem does not exist. The foods are guaranteed to be prepared as soon as you order it. You can even hear the kitchen utensils sizzling in the kitchen as the food is made ready. While we were waiting, the waiter graciously brought us some tea.<br/><br/>The Fried Prawn Rolls arrived first. These were fresh from the wok! Accompanied with a sweet & sour sauce, every element of this dish was delightful. The skin from the rolls danced a fine balance between crunchy and soft, while its contents were moist and full of flavour. I already love this dish from normal Yum Cha, but I was definitely able to take my enjoyment to a new level knowing that it was hot off the stove.<br/><br/>The Steamed Shanghai Pork Dumplings (Also known as Xiao Long Bao 小笼包) and Steamed Prawn Dumplings arrived next. Shanghai Pork Dumplings are infused with a combination of soup and pork. These have to be eaten at the right temperature. Eat it too quickly and it will scald your tongue. On the other hand, the longer it cools, the gummier the underside dough will develop, which increases the odds of the dumplings tearing and spilling out its liquid gold. Andy's served these from a traditional bamboo steamer. It was now up to us to gauge and apply when to eat. The interplay of savoury pork and rich broth was marvelous when it washed over our palate. For those of you who want to try this at home, Andy's offers a takeaway offer of 8 Shanghai Pork Dumplings for $10. (Correct as of 30 Jan 2019). The Prawn Dumplings that followed were tender and succulent. I actually particularly enjoyed the skin of all the dumplings - they were fine and fragile yet delicately crafted enough so that it could hold its contents and not stick to other dumplings. <br/>My friend ordered the Chicken and Ginger dumplings. Normally, I am not a fan of ginger but this dish was fantastically done. The aromas and textures were great without being too overpowering. Flavours that rocked my tongue. The sauce that leaked out from beneath the dish? Absolutely amazing.<br/><br/>We finished with the traditional Siu Mai - tasty open-faced dumplings filled with ground pork. I absolutely love these, and Andy's was no exception. Each one filled to the brim with flavour and strong consistency. Simplicity and magnificence rolled into one. A personal favourite of mine. I could eat these all day!<br/><br/>[$25 EFTPOS MINIMUM IN STORE] - More than fair enough. If you would like to order from the comfort of your home, visit andysyumchahouse.com.au to pick up at your desired time.<br/><br/>I encourage you to come here and support a small business owner. His food is homely and his hospitality is humble.

This is one of the best dumpling & yum cha restaurants in Melbourne. It is easy to observe and appreciate the food that is being made fresh onsite daily- and you can taste how deliciously perfect all the food actually is. Wonderful flavours, fresh and exceptional value. The custard buns are pure perfection. Always go here, this place is a true gem.
Prof. Pinky@LunchLab
My score 3.5 stars.  J & I have been here quite a few times at lunchtime.  A strange place in that it is actually about yum cha (small plates), rather than large serves of dumplings - but the premises are quite small (no trolleys & crowds involved)!  Service can be a bit slow/laid back & it's not the cheapest for what it is, but if you're after a Chinese morsel fix, what alternatives are there in the area?  Our favourites are:  Gourmet mushroom mix/Fried deluxe dumpling/Steamed chive dumplings.  BTW > We had a brush with fame once when Wendy Stapleton was at the table next to us (memories of Wendy & the Rockets concerts when Melbourne was the undisputed live music capital of the world).  If you are a local/don't want a longish drive/have yum cha cravings/deep pockets/time on your hands - this is the place for you...

Great dumplings for a good price. Better then most I’ve had around Melbourne. Selection a little lacking but what they have they do really well.

#Experience1<br/>Nice little Chinese place near Windy Hill which is open till late.<br/><br/>Great dumplings, great food overall, specially the Garlic Chicken was a super find.. The Pan fried Pork dumplings was really good as per other reviews as well.<br/><br/>#Experience2<br/>We returned to this place after a few months for some dumplings and after trying out three dishes we were told the minimum total required for card payment is $25. I didn’t find an atm around so had to forcibly order a takeaway to increase our total over $25.<br/>
Food Junkie
From the outside it looks unassuming and a little understated. The friend that took me there have been here before and I trust his taste. The food is delicious.! The pork bun is super soft and fluffy. Would definitely come back for a quick bite to satisfy my yum cha cravings.
Billie George
Love this place! They have all the essential yum Cha classics without having to tackle china town. All cooked to order so everything is super fresh, and the chicken ribs are a must have! Along with the chive cakes.... we are never disappointed.
Ravenous Melbourne
Andy’s is a nice little dumpling house with fairly reasonable prices. The dining room is cosy but cute; you can takeaway or dine in. Salt and pepper calamari was my pick of the dishes we had.
Kevin C Heong
Poor - hard to believe a restaurant rated 3.9 cannot pack out a lunch service on a Saturday afternoon but once you’re fed, you can understand why. Overpriced dumplings that are said to be ‘made to order’ but taste like they’re out of a supermarket freezer. The ambience of a funeral of someone you don’t like. Won’t be back
Cat
Basic but tasty food. The portions are small but that's why it's so cheap and everything tasted fresh. The highlight was the dumplings. Nothing to brag about was just good.
Dale Zeinheiger Culpin
Grabbed takeaway from Andy's late on a Sunday night and was really impressed! Ordered Prawn Dumplings, Shanghai Pork Dumplings, BBQ pork buns, shredded beef with honey and black pepper and Singapore noodles. Each dish was great and all for under 50 bucks. Can't wait to come back! Especially for those grade A dumplings!

I visit there few days ago and the food taste pretty nice and nice service:) eventhough its small place in the suburb but its recommended to have a try:)
DJB
Totally shocking service <br/>took more than an hour and mains still had not arrived<br/>decided to leave as the owner was way to busy with take away than to provide reasonable service when dinning in <br/>his response "its not fast food"<br/>1 hour for mains is outrageous <br/>dumplings were ok but nothing to write home about <br/>place was overpriced which is fine if you get good service without the attitude<br/>no idea how they are 3.9 as if i could give 0 stars i would form his attitude
Gusnorton21
Pretty good yum cha. Particularly the dumplings were fantastic. I think they may have been home made. I could have just had the dumplings all night, they were that good!
Dieter
Food: small portions of food, like a yum cha!. All the dishes we tried we really enjoyed, though nothing specific worth mentioning. They do a great job with the food.<br/>Ambience: clean and cosy with wood and brick. <br/>Service: quiet and gets the job done<br/>Verdict: if I were local I'd come back often. All round Very good.
Etienne Rizzo
Decent food but the young guy was very unfriendly and could not crack a smile. A shame because otherwise the food is quite good. Improvement required I am afraid
Anh Nguyen
Not traditional yum cha i guess since there are no trolleys but on the plus side, the dumplings are steamed or fried to order, so they're always fresh and delicious. <br/><br/>I especially love the chive cakes, but really, you can't go wrong here. It's a little sad they don't have chicken feet though. <br/><br/>As I was paying I could see into the kitchen where a couple, I'm assuming the owners, were making the dumplings together, which made it feel even more homey and sweet.
Pamela
A popular and great standby for us who live in local area. The food is consistently good. Dumplings are tasty, but we particularly like the fried calamari and meatballs. It is a small place so we normally book on weekends.<br/>
Rishi Kandel
Huge Rip Off and massively over priced.<br/><br/>They employ the trick of cutting the size and keeping reasonable price on the menu. The main course are of miniature size and the entrees are terribly small. We are fan of Chinese food and visit different places. We found this is a massive rip off and will not go back again.
Alwayshungry
Had lunch here today, unfortunately the service was without any warmth or enthusiasm. Had to ask for water and bowls. We were trying to avoid MSG in the dumplings and they only had a very limited selection which weren't very flavoursome and only came in 3-4 per serve. The sweet and sour pork was quite nice but a small serve too. Also don't have any high chairs. Disappointing
J_cinta
Never knew this place existed if it wasn't for this app. Thought I'd give it a crack and was very tasty! The servings were a little small but I'd still come back to try some more yummy dishes! The fried calamari was really delicious and crispy and the prawn and pork dumplings were full of flavour..

Loveeeeeee this place! Been coming here for years and always feel very welcomed and looked after. No idea why people have negative reviews as this place and the staff are absolutely amazing oh yeah and the Food!!! Fresh, delicious and perfect!
Bluecat
Not the usual fancy eatery, it rather a small place. Nothing much to rave about but I did not mind it. The dim sums starts from $5.50 for each serve, which normally comes with 3 pieces. Service was really attentive. Food was okay. Pictures of the dim sums was attached all along the wall to help those who do not know the names. Got told that the dim sums were hand made by the lady who makes an appearance when you leave and she did when we left.
Fussy Eater
Average service, tasty food, small portions (for the price). Overall, decent experience but nothing to write home about. There are so many places in Essendon that I can't see this place lasting for the long haul.
Ta.be.tabi
My bf and I ended up around Essendon because of DFO and since I was starving I desperately wanted to find a decent place to eat around there. I found Andy’s Yum Cha House on Zomato and took the plunge because of the ratings despite it looking a bit shabby. It was a pain to find parking but we saw a car that was leaving!
Gary D
Has dropped off since previous owners left. But still good food. No warmth or soul. But great dumplings & garlic chicken is amazing. just need staff to smile and talk!
Emma Louise
Really nice yum Cha! We loved the steamed pork buns and the steamed pork dumplings. We will definitely be coming back for dinner again! :) Emma

Perhaps it's just that we've been spoiled with good quality dumplings in the CBD, but we were not at all impressed with the food here. There was also an annoying radio on in the background with a lot of loud talking, rather than nice music. The staff were friendly but sadly that's not enough to get us to go back.
Az
Came here for the first time last night, really good dumplings I must say. I lived in Hong Kong for 9 years and in terms of taste and freshness this place rivals some of the best that HK has to offer. Service was a little lacking but fast. It's apparent that they value efficiency over customer experience (which is fine with me, shouldn't be expecting much from a small suburban Chinese restaurant).
May Tan
Not my favorite yum char place. It's OK. Not many items on menu which is fine but I wouldn't miss the food here. Good place if you are looking for a quick fix, but to really satisfy, you have to look elsewhere.
Franko Roberts
My friend from interstate and I visited for dinner and I thought the service was poor and he made us feel like we were interrupting him.  He was more concerned about taking phone orders than serving his sit in customers.  The only saving grace was that the food great.
Claudia L
The decor is outdated (but clean and neat) and there is no atmosphere and the service could definitely be better. The food is OK, but has gone downhill over the years.
Anton Ego
Ordinary, overpriced.. Spent $20 on 8 dumplings and green tea, left feeling hungry & unsatisfied.<br/><br/>I rather drive into Chinatown and spend the extra money on parking
Tannn
Thumbs up. Good food, good service, what else? my favorite would be the pan fried pork dumpling and the scallop dumpling! the lemon chicken is really nice too. greeted with a smile by both the waiter and waitress on a friday night once i entered the shop and the waitress is very friendly while taking my orders. will definitely be back again!
Magilla Gorilla
Fantastic food and service. I don't know what some of these bad reviews are. They must have gone to the wrong place. We went for Yum Cha this morning for 3 people. Food selection was great. Typical of Yum Cha an with the bonus of picture of each dish on the wall.<br/>Service was exemplary and the guy who took our order very friendly and I could understand him.<br/>We loved the food, service and atmosphere. It's not like those huge sup[supermarkets with the trolleys that pass by every 3 minutes.. This food is cooked fresh and served to the tables. We will definitely be back
Danni Be
Not impressed. Overpriced low quality food with poor service. Biggest disappointment -" vegetarian fried rice" steamed rice with some frozen peas and corn. Not a semblance of a clue what was fried about it or what justifed the exorbitant price . Won't be going back.
Jacqui Kobylinski
Unfortunately for Andy's I don't have anything nice at all to say about the food as we never got a chance to order. We were seated but after 10-15 minutes (and being the only ones in the resturant) no one came to take our drink or food order. Staff continued to clean tables around us, and after our 5th attempt to get their attention we gave up. They weren't that disappointed when we told them we weren't happy. Very sad.
Tonyso33
Abysmal. Overpriced, microscopic servings, and garnished with apathetic service. Get more personality from a vending machine<br/><br/>I honestly don't know how they got such a high 'like' percentage. <br/><br/>I have been motivated to write my first ever urbanspoon review<br/><br/>Avoid, or get stitched up (like I did). Will never be back
Nona Tukang Makan
The dish was well seasoned and the skin was perfectly...
Spicy Delight
Delicious!. I came here with my friend and we had a delicious meal. We ate some lovely prawn and pork dumplings, sui mai and vegetarian dumplings, as well as pork buns and the fried beef dish. The dumplings were all made fresh to order and the other dishes were very tasty too!
Bec Kenny
First ever review but after an extremely disappointing meal I felt the urge to post. We ordered $40 of takeaway, bottom line, the food was ok.....but not nearly enough for the price. Will not go here again!
Goodfood
Bad Service; Tasteles food.. I'm sorry, but this is has got to be one of the worst restaurants (if you can call it that) that I have ever been to (and we eat out ALOT). We (2 adults and 1 child) went to Andy's 2 weeks ago on a Sunday night. We had driven past numerous times as we live in the area, but had never tried it (we are very particular about the standard of our Chinese food, and already had our own favourite restaurant). <br/>Well our greeting upon entering was little more than a grunt and we where pointed to a table to sit at. Menu's were then dumped on the table. There was only one guy and he had zero customer service ability (by the look on his face, the business is just about making money). He virtually slammed my credit card back in my hand at the end of then night upon payment (FYI-we hadn't been rude or anything).<br/>But I can put up with that sort of attitude if the food is good, however it was awful! None of the dumplings we chose were great tasting (chose 3 different types - some fried, some pan fried), and the 2 mains were not pleasant. There was some sort of spicy beef dish which wasn't enjoyable, and the salt & pepper calamari was covered too heavily in the batter and tasteless. There was only one vegetable dish available to order to accompany our main dishes (which was definitely needed to cut through all the fried food). <br/>I don't know if all the people who gave good comments only ate here at lunchtime for yum cha (mainly dumplings??), but I just can't understand the good comments. I would definitely not eat here for dinner again.
Facebook User
Shark fin dumplings on the menu. Avoid.
Edible
Yummy dim sum. Visited again after a long break... Dim sums are very well made, fresh. Prawn dumplings (har gow) are probably the best I've had.... Chive dumplings, coriander dumplings were also excellent. Hard to fault the steamed dumplings, tried the fried deluxe dumplings but a little too oily for me. There was another person serving who was quite friendly, but the "usual" host/waiter needs to smile a bit more if they want to attract more customers.<br/><br/><br/>-----03 Aug, 2014-----<br/><br/>Really good fresh dim sums. This is a real gem, very fresh yummy dim sums and the best thing is that it is relatively easy to get a table. It is a small establishment, unlike the mediocre bigger yum cha places in the city or suburbs. Quite reluctant to review as I like it to remain a secret, but thought it deserves an honest review.
Trini Cao
The homemade dumplings here are soo delicious.Best yum cha I've had in ages will be coming back for more!
Martin.f.kuehne
Succulent Prawn Dumplings!. I normally avoid yum cha but after dining at Andy's Yum Cha with some friends I can fully recommend! The handmade dumplings were fresh and each dish was served with a smile from the friendly waitress. The restaurant recently re-opened with new owners so based on my dining experience I can safely say that Andy's will be my new first preference for yum-cha!
Joann Smith
Can you please put up a take away menu. Thank you :)

Even Better Than Before. We have always loved the food at Andy's (maybe not the service so much) so we were a bit worried when we went last night that we would be disappointed, well we weren't! The food was even more delicious, with some new menu items to try and the service great. We will keep going back and recommend for the best yum cha on our side of town.
Queenie Chan
My husband and I decided to try Andy's last week as they are under new management. Their prawn dumplings were delicious and we found out from the waitress that they are made freshly in house. I've been to lots of Yum Cha places and their prawn dumplings is one of the top in Melb. Apart from yum cha dishes, their salt and pepper tofu, calamari and chicken are to die for. This place is such a hidden gem.
Beverleychin
Yuuuumm! New management, disregard everything before!. Just moved into the area about half year ago. I know Andy's has been under new management (since about May?) And I've been there about half a dozen times now. The food is better than anything you'll get in a yum cha place like Shark's Fin or the Plume. I love the har gao (steamed prawn dumplings), the lovely waitress told me on our 3rd time there her mum handmakes them! Love the fried tofu, it is a must try... so crispy and we order it every time!<br/><br/>Definitely have to try Andy's, I don't know what it was like under old management but all I know now is that its awesome.
Lmfao
BEST YUM CHA EVER. Excellent food, excellent service. Must be the new management. Quality of food is much better.
Impossible Princess
New Management - Delicious Food. My husband suggested we go to Andy's Yum Cha for dinner with the kids (2 under 10). He'd been before, and I hadn't so I read the reviews. I wasn't sure after reading some of the previous bad reviews, but decided to give it a go anyway,<br/><br/>The restaurant is under new management (family business), and I've got nothing but nice things to say.<br/><br/>Service: The waitress was extremely friendly and always served us with a smile. <br/><br/>Food: The food was cooked to order, quick to come and delicious (especially the sesame bean paste balls). There is no longer a minimum charge per head. You only pay for what you order. <br/><br/>Drinks: Tap water is available for the table. The restaurant is BYO beer and wine, and you can buy soft drink if you like.<br/><br/>I'm glad we went to Andy's Yum Cha for dinner, we enjoyed our dinner, I've taken a take-away menu, and we'll go back again soon. It's a great place for children to sample new tastes.
Ariyana
Delicious delicious delicious!. I came with my boyfriend last week and the food is ridiculously good!<br/>Having tried yum cha at a lot of different venues around the city, it was great to try something that was really fresh, and not something that was carted around the table for a few hours.<br/>And the dumplings don't come fresher, as they're cooked on order. The coriander, pork and prawn dumplings were a fav, and the crispy pork dumplings were so good I had to order a second! But if there's one thing you HAVE to try it's the calamari. So good. So fresh. I'm salivating thinking about it!<br/>Don't know what the complaints are about on the service. We thought it was really good, everyone was really friendly. We spent about $54 between us, and we were exploding (but I still wanted more!). It's pricier than some of the dodgy city yum cha places, but the quality makes it seriously worth it. You just can't compare.<br/>Totally going to make a trip back sometime soon, although I overheard the lady tell another table that they were changing management. I really hope the new team can cook as good!
Michelle Lo
Not cheap nor worthy. First time visit. The entrees here are $5.80 each, which is double most yum cha restaurants. We ordered a few dumpling entree dishes and the special fried rice. The food was nothing extraordinary, but the fried rice was shocking; it cost us $10 for an entree-sized rice dish. Furthermore, they do not serve tap water here. Everything was designed to get more money out of customers and service was not great. We probably won't go back.
Veryboozy
Expensive and oily. Very expensive for what we got. Food was extremely oily. Wouldn't go back
Tweesa.day
Incredibly Rude. We had barely stepped through the door to the empty restaurant when we were told about the minimum $20 order without as much as a 'hello'. She looked us up and down whilst we digested her news. We would have spent $20 easy. It was 5.30 the place was empty so i was flummoxed as to why she felt the need to enforce this so abruptly when we would have eaten and been out of there before the evening foot traffic. We decided to walk out. People like that don't deserve business.
Kokubear
Is this for real?. This place gets a decent score on urbanspoon. So I thought , why not?<br/>Here's why not...<br/>The place has 8 tables. <br/>You know it is a mistake when you don't see any Chinese in a Chinese restaurant...<br/>Extremely limited yum cha dishes,<br/>The Hokkien noodles - super oily, and it's not how it's normally taste like... <br/><br/>I am struggling for any positive contribution... <br/><br/>I guess this place is like an introduction to Chinese meals before stepping into cbd for the real deal.
Ally Smith
Yummo!. Best Yum Cha i've had - hands down. This place is fantastic. I little pricey - but worth it.

Would definitely return. Took the wife and two young'uns there for a Sunday brunch, and really enjoyed the food. We were first customers there at 11am, so service was obviously excellent, and the proof that the yum cha dishes are made fresh at time of order was the spacing between the dishes arriving. Would go back there again. The place is small and they have a $20min per head table reservation policy which would not be too hard to reach because of the tasty offerings. For 2A and 2C it cost us just on $80. Try the steamed ginger prawn dumplings.

This used to be one of my dead-set favorites. Unfortunately I am writing this while waiting for my take away (of 3 simple yum cha meals). 45 minutes and it's finally arrived yay!

Regulars to Andy's, the food is so fresh, we have tried most items on the menu, never disappoints and have taken many friends to share the experience and everyone was happy!

Lovely. Great small snacks....food really nice...small and intimate place we enjoy...although staff try to push you out very quickly due to the small size of the place...go off peak and you will enjoy this gem

NorthernEater. Like most Melbournians, I love yum cha and dumplings. This is by far one of/if not the best in Melbourne!<br/><br/> Forget the frozen rubbish from Shanghai Dumpling house or the pre-made dumplings at other city venues. These guys are the real deal, full prawns used, freshly made and all at extremely affordable prices. <br/><br/>If you love dumplings, this place is a must visit.. make sure you have the mango pudding for dessert!

Nothing overly wrong, food clearly caters for people who don't have Asian food often and aren't too adventurous (what yum cha establishment doesn't serve chicken feet!). People were nice enough, food was just too bland.

Solid little dumpling joint.food is fresh, quick and tasty. Will be back
Cherrypie1983
Fabulous. Not as many dishes as the big yum cha chains to choose from, but enough to be contented and just as authentic/ quality cantonese yum cha, was an impressive first vist, will come back again

Yum Cha Rocks
Food is excellent. Service very good. Great that's it's BYO wine and beer. Ambience is lacking needs music or something else. Def will visit again

Bloody awesome! Clearly the best Chinese food this side of town. We had dumplings, steamed broccoli, spicy calamari and the homy beef which was amazing!! Highly recommend :)

Def not worth a 90. Food is ok but ex compared to other places.

Yum cha = yum yum! The veggie spring rolls were lovely and fresh, you could tell they were handmade. The veggie dumplings had a wonderful mix of vegetables that all worked well together, definately worth a try! The veggie fried rice was well flavoured and it wasn't oily at all which made it a light and refreshing meal. The fried chick cakes are delicate and full of flavour. The gourmet mushroom mix with ginger is simply delicious. The spicy calamari is also another favourite of mine. The lemon chicken is crispy and the lemon sauce has the perfect balance of not too sweet. My partner and I regularly visit Andy's because the food is always scrumptious, full of flavour and perfectly seasoned. Love it!

Satisfying. You shouldn't come here for the service, but I was already expecting this so it didn't bother me that much. <br/>I got the vego dumplings - they were fresh, and tasty - but pretty much fell apart as soon as you picked them up. The hot and sour soup was delicious, but a bit small I thought. I had the fried tofu which was delicious, fresh, and a generous serving - I couldn't even eat it all. <br/>I would come back here for the food, but the service and general ambience of the place doesn't rate very high. Maybe try take-away instead. <br/>All of this cost just under $30, which I thought was OK.

Small place, limited choice, pricy than those big yum cha restaurant

$30 minimum spend to use credit card is a joke! $20 minimum spend per head for a booking is utter bulls$&t! Food is average and not as cheap as some people may say. $5.50 for three dumplings is not cheap. I am happy to pay more for dumplings when they are delicious, but these were average at best. $12 for 5 pieces of fried previously frozen calamari is not value for money. The service is crap! The older lady who was serving is rude and it seems like she doesn't want you in the place at all. Do yourself a favour and go to one of the hundreds of better yum cha places in Melbourne!

Love this little place, the service isn't fantastic but they are lovely people and the food is fantastic, best yum cha in essndon that's for sure , great for locals and cheap

Good things small packages. Tiny little place hitting all the right notes! Love it every time I visit when I can get a table.

Yummmmm. Andy's Yum Cha is beautiful - they have the best yum cha - may not be authentic but who cares as long as it tates good. Front door is broken - part of the quirk - waitress is cold - totally agree with other reviews, once you have been there a few times - she warms up but I think it is because she is very shy and quiet. I personally go there because their yum cha is great. Pork and coriander, shark finn and prawn dumplings to die for. Love it - try it if you love dumplings.

Love, love, love!. This place is fantastic. The food is amazing value. Where else can you get 3 whole prawn dumplings (not mixed, minced seafood) for under $6.00. Yes, you have to pay for water. However, it is a BYO restaurant. The owners don't make money from serving liquor. Anyone that has an issue with paying $1.50 for a bottle of water when the food prices are so reasonable, shouldn't be dining out. The dumplings are second to none. The owner was actually the head chef at Shark Fin House or one of the other major Chinese restaurants in the city before it was closed whilst being renovated. We LOVE Andy's and trust me, the staff will grow on you.

What, No Water?? !!!!!. As soon as I attempted to enter through the broken door I knew I should have just gone home. When my family and I eventually walked in we were looked on by the older female with contempt. We were eventually motioned to the far side of the restaurant and left to our own devices for what appeared to be an eternity. The younger female waitress then came and took our order and I couldn't help but wonder why she was wearing a heavy coat, she looked like she was about to leave and go somewhere better. I continued to stay and order (against my better judgement) and settled on the banquet C (which was the most expensive banquet available). I asked for some water. Oh wait "we don't serve water" the heavily dressed waitress said, you have to buy our overpriced bottles of water. By this stage I was ready to stand up and leave but looking at my family and the later hour of the evening I decided again (against everything else in me to the contrary) to stay. you can probably guess the rest: <br/><br/>Service... Poor <br/>Food .....Average (ice cream was that cheap home brand stuff)<br/>facilities ...Toilet should be closed down permanently, (a real reflection on the food and service)<br/>Value for money....... terrible <br/>and that bloody front door.............AHHHHHHHHh
Chocolate.Factory
Our love affair with the dumplings continue! Can't get enough of their offerings..... Sooooo good! Need to get that door fixed though.... Too much cold wind gets through that dodgy door. It's been broken for as long as I can remember.......

T64. Love it, love, love it. Have been here many times since the opening, so many favorites, too many to mention. Let's just say I can't eat wanton soup anywhere else since having tried it at Andy's. Most Yum Cha restaurants, the dumplings and buns all taste and look the same, not here, each little morsil has it's own unique taste and texture. Whilest some people find the main waitress aloof, she is simply shy and once you get to know her she is very friendly and provides great service. Yes, it would be nice to have bottled tap water but, I love being able to BYO beer if you wish.

We chose to have lunch there today on Good Friday. We had already bought our 2 young girls a bottle of water earlier, so as soon as the 4 of us sat down, the female host came and the first thing she said was that we can't drink our water in her restaurant hecause it wasn't hers. I asked her if she would sacrifice a $50 lunch for the sake of the water and she just kept saying " you no drink your water here". So the 4 of us got up and left. F**k them. Let the restaurant starve for budiness on Good Friday. She lost our table, with only only one other table of people left in there. I am NEVER going there again. This is the reason why some restaurants need to close down.

Small, pokey and terrible service. You say your a yum Cha house, yet you don't have the majority of yum Cha food on your menu. This is an insult to yum Cha, being I'm Chinese. Your menu is westernized to suit the area. I'd recommend Maribrynong to everyone, full yum Cha menu for a quarter of the price and spacious too.
David
Very casual Cafe style restaurant with less than friendly service but the food was very good. A lot more expensive than larger places but I guess this is needed given small size of place.

Just left Andy's for lunch. Little local restaurant serving cheap yum cha made to order. Wouldn't say this place the the best or all that great but it serves decent food for a cheap price. Service is not really attentive either. Was hard to grab the staff's attention throughout our meal and the restaurant wasn't that busy either. Would come back but not in a hurry.

Andy's Yum Cha. Excellent. First visit today for Yum Cha lunch. Extremely impressed with fresh and tasty food delivered pipping hot to the table. BYO is a plus. Like the restaurant's small size. Will definitely be returning to this venue.<br/><br/>Maz - September 2011

Very Cute and Humble. Great Service, authentic Chinese Yum Cha cooked fresh on the premises. Very, very friendly lady who owns the restaurant is very helpful and very efficent. A small comfortable and cosy setting. Took a friend who also said she would recommend to friends.
