Today I was fortunate enough to have lunch at Matte Black Cafe. I had the chicken skewers, which were delicious! The chicken was cooked to perfection and you could tell that good quality chicken had been used as there was no fatty pieces. I would definitely have this meal again. I also had a chai latte, which was perfect! Best chai latte ever!
On another note, the customer service at this venue was amazing. I was supposed to eat lunch with a group of friends and my daughter, who is in a pram, at another restaurant in the area. The staff at that place were rude and would not accommodate our group and the pram. I was in tears by the time I arrived at Matte Black but thankfully the staff advised me that they would comfortably seat us all and that the pram was no issue. They re-arranged all the tables and chairs to provide a larger table and a place to comfortably store the pram.

What a wonderful brunch we had for my grans bday yesterday. The staff were all absolutely lovely and just seemed so happy to be at work, lovely clean cafe, great menu. Compliments to the chef who served 5 meals and 2 children’s in a timely manner which were all amazing! Thanks so much, we will be back. ☺️

Visited this café for Sunday Morning Breakfast and sat at a table inside the waitress brought over some menus and took our drink orders. We all then ordered 2 lots of the Crepes, One Lot of the Hot Cakes and a Serve of Scrambled Eggs on Toast. We didn't have to wait very long for the food to come out and also didn't have to wait very long for our Coffees either. When the food came out it looked absolutely delicious and it tasted delicious. The Crepes were served with Strawberries and Maple Syrup and we asked for some Ice Cream on the side. The Hot Cakes were served with Fresh Strawberries and Blueberries and Maple Syrup and I asked for some Vanilla Ice Cream on the side. The Hot Cakes were big ones and very nice and fluffy and moist as well. (Some places the hotcakes/pancakes are not moist at all) but these ones definitely were. The Coffees were also served hot and they stayed lukewarm until the last mouthful was drunk. The only thing I didn't like was we asked for our Coffees to be served in Mugs and they were served in the large glass cups. But The Coffee was still very nice. Their is a good range to choose from on the menu and it was very hard to choose what to eat. I will definitely be back for both food and also coffee. Will definitely stop and grab a caffeine fix from Matte Black next time I am walking past.
Such beautiful decor and very modern. The menu was awesome, it had so many breakfast and lunch options. The avocado dish came with a balsamic glaze which made it so unique. Adding the Sujuk to the dish took it to another level and the flavours were AMAZING. The Tim tam shake was really good and the service was impeccable. It changes the whole experience when the staff are friendly and generally care about your satisfaction. Would recommend!

I went to this cafe following my friends advice, she said the coffee was very nice and I absolutely agree! I tried the avocado and feta on sourdough and it was delicious. Just what I needed on a Monday morning..
Fast becoming a regular here, smiling service, awesome coffee and nice meals. Had the minestrone which was soup of the day the other day and was not disappointed!
Matte Black Café has to be one of the best café’s in Essendon that I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. The waitresses were alert and attentive of what they were doing, service was fast, coffee was great. The only thing that upset me was the wide variety of food that they offered, it made choosing my meal difficult because all options looked delicious!

I regularly visit this café for breakfast and on all occasions have had a pretty good experience. Very picky with my coffee so that's my first reason for going back. Food is always fresh, tasty and is served in a timely manner. The café is clean and décor is modern. Friendly staff, great atmosphere and always welcoming. Don't have anything negative to say to be honest!
Finally a place who has amazing coffee! The staff are very friendly!! I had the Matt's burger with chips which was absolutely amazing. I saw the table next to me had the mixed grill which looked fantastic, I will return to try it. There are many meals that are not available in surrounding cafes and I will return to try them. Keep up the great work guys!!
I’ve been to Matte Black on a few occasions and love it as a regular go-to. Warm atmosphere, great food and great coffee! Staff are friendly and attentive and Matt’s burger is a must try for lunch!
Newly opened and ready to please, MatteBlack is worth putting on your list to check out next time you're in Essendon. Great coffee, lovely cold case and the portions are on point. Seating is spacious and has a lovely patio. We've been twice and it won't be the last... even if they don't have bacon!

Incredibly welcoming - was just stopping for a quick breakfast before heading to the airport and almost justified missing my flight in leiu of staying here longer. The breakfast burger was insane, and the owner and the team were lovely. Cheers!
Amidst all of the other “brunch” places in the area, I would have to say that Matte Black is at the top of my favourites! The food was absolutely amazing and the staff are always the nicest people. It just has an amazing atmosphere and I will definitely be back for more :)

“One of the girls is very rude refused to stamp my loyalty coffee card because I wasn’t getting takeaway even though it was a takeaway drink but I was drinking it in house. Quality of the food was poor, I ordered a smashed avocado on toast with feta and poached eggs and I could only eat half.”

I have revisited and was extremely impressed. We were welcomed on a Sunday morning on arrival. Offered water upon being seated. The staff were very friendly and our order was delivered quickly and as ordered. The food was great 👍 very filling and cooked excellently.
I will be rating this venue highly after my poor first impression.
The burgers and coffees are great.. You can tell the owner cares, he even comes and checks on you!
Updated: this place has had a heap of renovations and is even better since covid. The new menu is ace!
It is a nice place to have your breakfast. It was my first time but I don’t think it will be my last. Convenient as close to my house and very nice staff.

Update... the food is amazing. Been here 3 times since lockdown ended. Chicken burger, tasty, crunchy and good portion, but if you want something next level go the beef brisket benedict. Beef brisket, poached eggs and hollandaise. Just wow.
