Review Me Wah Chinese Take Away Food - Essendon

Mina Nguyen
Let's start by saying I was really excited about coming here. It was clearly very popular and we were lucky to get a table due to a cancellation. Staff services was excellent and it was the most posh and fine dining experience thus far for a yum cha experience. Food looks good šŸ‘. Almost insta worthy. Flavour was there for some of the food we had and we were both very full - over ordered. Unfortunately, I also never experienced cold food at yum cha before. Their new fish ball was hard, chewy and unpleasant. Their cold fried dumplings was also cold, oily, tough and unpleasant to eat. I asked the staff to take it away but she bought it back in a takeaway container instead. Which was no issue. My favourite meal was the steamed rice rolled... that was the stand out. Second to that was their roast duck. Everything else was ok ans lacked flavour or was cold.

I've been living in essendon for 2 years and everytime I smelled asian food in the essendon station, I'm wondering if this the restaurant cause it's really smell delicious! So finally, I tried their food and it's so good!!! I'll definitely coming back to order again. It's cheap and delicious!

Always a decent feed here. Don't get me wrong it's basic Chinese but done consistently well at reasonable prices. Their fried is is always delicious but if you go here you need to try the chicken roll. Never seen them anywhere else. Very unique and tasty and their satay skewers have a nice kick to them...

The best special fried rice ever. No meat is diced, it's full of chunks. A meal on its own.
Richard Mezzetta
Best special fried rice in Victoria hand's down!!! Great family run restaurant.

Been buying the fried rice, dim sims and spring rolls for over 30 years. Best fried rice ever. Dummy's are Chen Wah, but spring rolls are home made

The best fried rice in Melbourne! Very tasty & not too oily. Havenā€™t tried any of the food yet but would highly recommend their special fried rice.

Not sure what people are banging on about with this place. Nothing special. Satay skewers were dry and the satay sauce was really watery and tasteless. Chicken balls were good. Tried the chicken roll, meh. Special fried rice was average.

We found this little gem and felt like it took us back to the 90s! Staff is amazing! Food is consistent and never disappointed. Highly recommended. Chicken Rolls... every review has mentioned them, I'll definitely be grabbing some tonight. :)

Excellent food and warm service. I usually go for more "popular" restaurant for Chinese food however I can honestly say I will be coming back to Me Wah whenever I find myself in Essendon. Although it looks like a standard takeaway place, the food was well prepared and the service was to match. Would recommend Lemon Chicken!

Originally was just popping in to buy a couple of dim sims for a quick snack. Then started to order the sweet and sour braised chicken. Really love this. One day I decided to buy a chicken roll. They are fantastic! Have bought quite a few since when I can drop by. Staff are excellent. Definitely, the place to go for great Chinese Food.

I have been going to this take away shop for nearly 40 years and without a shadow of a doubt the best chicken rolls in Australia. Great service, well priced, and food you'll keep coming back for. Would strongly recommend.

Absolutely love this place! First off, such friendly and polite staff, in person and on the phone. Their Hokkin noodles are to die for, no other Chinese shop does it quite like them. Satay chicken skewers I love, the chicken is always tender and juicy. Iā€™ve never had a bad meal from here, and Iā€™ve been coming here since I was little.

Wonderful service & great sized meals tasted amazing. Just wish there was a little more sauce in our container. Would recommend to anyone who is local or visiting the area. Easy parking out the front

This is a basically an institution in Essendon.
I worked next door to it in Essendon for quite sometime so it became standard dinner fare. Years later I still miss it.I used to do a 20 minute drive just to get that oh so good special fried rice.I've never had a bad meal from here.

This place is Beyond retro. Original 70s...and i love that. Old School Aussie/Chinese. Had the Special Fried Rice and it was good. Next time Lemon Chicken and then the time machine journey will be complete.
Typical hole in the wall Chinese takeaway joint. Been going here for years. Most legit Lemon chicken and fried rice I've had. Ā Don't let the no frills look fool you, this place serves up some delicious food.

Another place that I have been going to for well over 20 years. I have had most things off the menu and its always a winner!

If you in the Essendon area and want some really good Chinese Take Away stop here! My personal go to here is the Singapore noodles.

I have been going to Me Wah for the past 10 or so years, it is the dingiest looking chinese take away store but the food is absolutely delicious!

Food was stale when we ordered at 8pm, like you'd expect from a food court clearing out what's been sitting there all day.

Special fried rice has nothing special about it. The large has about 5 small prawns and 3-4 small pieces of beef. The rest is all plain white rice.

The sweet and sour pork is also very stale, and it's all just very thick and chewy batter, very little actual pork in it.

We used to go here a lot years ago and I'm sad to say it has absolutely gone downhill. Won't be back.
These guys make the best Fried Rice ever. You know it's damn good when people from interstate come down, order 15 extra large serves to take home & freeze to get them by until the visit again!!!!

Home made chicken rolls are amazing, just wish they did homemade dim sims instead of commercial ones (only disappointing thing on the menu)

Terrible. Fried rice was alright, but spring rolls were appalling - thick batter and some amorphous awful mush inside. Couldn't eat more than a bite and then binned. Sesame prawn toasts were fried to dry crisp. Will not be back.

Chinese takeaway. Had fried rice and it was ok. What was weird was the way the spring rolls came out. It was in the biggest batter I ever seen and looked like it had been double fried.
The pork and cashew dish was tasty but felt that it was oversauced.

The best.... The best fried rice in Melbourne! ppl that suggest the place is unclean...not true. dated? yes.
Ren
Very dirty.the food and service needs to be cleaned up.

Very disappointing. I came on the recommendation of a work colleague. Ordered the chicken rolls, sweet and sour chicken and special fried rice. Rice was just ok, sweet and sour was all dough and neither it nor the chicken rolls had anything that resembled chicken. Lacked flavour, and I am sorry to say that it was a total waste of my $23 and I won't be back again. Ate some and binned remainder.

Great special fried rice with heaps of meat !!! The chicken rolls are delicious though Prehaps a tad unhealthy
Rob
Super good. I use to buy food from here all the time, but chose not to eat take away . after years I just went to buy some food and it is even better than it use to be. The special fried rice was the best I have had anywhere in essendon and so was the sweet and sour pork. Highly recommend. The only neg is I think its a little expensive for take away food
Garbageguts
It used to be a great place but since Ray left, it's gone down hill, "BIG TIME"

I have eaten there a couple of times and the last time I cancelled my order! Watching the cool and the way they handle the food and how dry the working area was I just walked out!

Just had Me Wah after reading the reviews and got my hopes up, unfortunately i was very disappointed. The staff were very nice, but apart from that. I got the special fried rice and Chinese BBQ pork. The rice was full of meat, but very bland and the BBQ pork unfortunately was very very very dry, like dried out leather. I also ordered spring rolls expecting them to be normal size and I was shocked to get 2 rolls the size of my forearm that were just oily deep fried moosh. I know my review is quite harsh, but the quality really was poor, even for local Aussie Chinese take away standards. Sorry

Best Fried Rice l have ever had.. I love this place, it's not fancy. It's a takeaway shop front and they cook right in front of you. The special friend rice is totally the best l have ever eaten. I can't get enough of it. With lashings of prawns[ l pick them out] chinese roast pork, and chicken through out, they don't skimp on the ingredients. I also love their Chinese roast pork. l get myself a extra large, it's packed to the brim with beautiful pork, onions and the most divine sauce. The prices are good. It's situated right across the road from Essendon Train Station. 5 stars for both food and service..

Great.. Dunno what that other unhappy soul was upset about. It's a storefront with a window, stools, a counter and a huge kitchen. These people do a great job producing fabulous food.

DISGUSTING. The Me Wah experience has prompted me to write my first review... This is how it went....
Firstly the place looks like a dirty throw back to the 1960's (which should have been enough to walk straight past).
I walked out of the shop and took a bite out of the vegetarian spring roll. Inside was the most vile tasting pink paste I have ever tasted. So bad I spat it out into a bush on the way to the car park. By the time we reached our car, the spring rolls and the funky smelling wontons, both fried in dirty oil, were dumped in the bin. After spending close to $50 we decided to at least try the rest of our food as we were both hungry. The chicken and sweet corn soup was sooooo salty and tasted like it had been made with a maggi stock tube, barely any chicken and maybe 10 pieces of corn. The honey chicken was soggy and sitting in half a take away container of tasteless liquid and my satay chicken tased like keens curry powder. Im a chef and eat out probably 5 times a week and this was by far the worst food I have ever eaten. If you want decent chinese food in this area I suggest yummy palace in ascot vale. Or venture out to viet star on Glenferrie road Hawthorn, both cheap and consistantly good. steer clear of Me Wah!!!!

Great. The staff are always friendly. This is your standard Aussie Chinese take-away but it is one of the best I have ever had.
