Review Nongkhai Thai Restaurant - Essendon

Great food. Great comfy chairs and tables. Would be great if they could find enough staff to cover all the tables. We've been a number of times and they only have 1 or 2 staff working to cover a full house. The poor servers are run off their feet.

Always apprehensive to try a new place for weekend takeaway but was pleasantly surprised. Got 4 different dishes and all were delicious. Safe to say we will be coming here more often to get our Thai fix.

Took mum here for dinner on a referral from a friend. The food arrived Luke warm. It was Lacking in authenticity and spice. Overpriced and Staff wanting to constantly clear the table whilst we were still eating and the restaurant was empty. First time for us and it’s the last. Ty

We used to order from this place for a long time. Food has been great all this time. But today we had a really bad experience. It looked that they were understaff. We waited for a long time for food. All the food we ordered were very ordinary. Specially the Pad thai was too sweet (we could have had that for dessert) and the chicken was over fried. Surprisingly this dish was on their today's special menu. I dont think I will visit this place any sooner.

Newly renovated this Thai restaurant . The food is good and the service was also good . They have parking available next to street. The place looks nice and clean . We also order through menu log when we can’t dine in. We had satay chicken , pad Thai and Thom yum soup. It was so good .

My usual takeaway and dine-in place for Thai food. The quality of food is most of the times great my favourite being the Tom yum soup and chicken satay skewers with peanut sauce. The only issue is I wish the quality was more consistent sometimes the skewers can be burnt and over cooked. The soup can also be overpowering. Service is always good

Love the decor and ambience of this place. Parked at the rear and the entrance was a beautiful walk of greenery. Thought that was nice. Restaurant itself is off the main road but it’s pretty quiet inside. We ordered the Satay which I though was good. Not your usual Malaysian satay, there’s a difference with Thai satay. Traditional duck curry and deep fried fish with Thai sauce I thought was ok. Thinly sliced duck meat in a curry was good but lack the punch and meat. Fish was good. Sweet sour and a lil tangy sauce goes well. Service was good being that it’s Friday night and lots of take away orders. Would be back to try the other dishes. 6/10.

The Address is in Strathmore. On 366 Pascoe Vale Rd, opposite Strathmore train station. 🚆🚋🚋🚈 An excellent choice for a dinner party or family dinner outing. You can't go wrong with this Thai restaurant. They serve very tasty, spicy or delicious meals. On their menu I recommend the Gang Dang. 🥘 It's Traditional Thai curry made from a spicy red curry paste. Cooked in coconut milk and vegetables. 🥒🥕 And a bowl of coconut rice. 🍚 A beverage I recommend to try is Lychee lemonade or Blue Lagoon lemonade. 🍸

6 dishes all bland, all meat chicken and beef tasted boiled, not fresh and cooked separately, pad Thai tasted weird like from old oil, everything is missing Thai flavor. Was very disappointed why the rating is 4 stars.

Our local go to thai food. Have eaten in and ordered via ubereats and so far no issues. Have tried a few dishes and would have to say our favs incl. the pad se ewe, pad thai and massman lamb shank. Curry puffs are nice but small. Service is friendly enough and wait times are fine. Spacious environment with decent seats. Would recommend.
Passion On A Plate
Absolutely disappointing!
We had some expectations. The food was mediocre the dominant flavors were chili vinegar salt (msg?)and more salt. There was no love or passion on the plate!
The wine list was mediocre.
The service was very slow and in patches.. Would not even contemplate returning And when we tried to voice our concerns we were ignored😩

My Key Three Pointers
* If you order over 100 dollars takeaway, you get a free main meal on the house.
* Has moved a couple of doors down the road and a fantastic new look
* Always consistent and never had a bad meal

Have been getting takeaway for many years and on my last visit I could not find the restaurant until I realized it had moved a few shops down. Wow what a pleasant surprise. The old restaurant was ok but very run down hence why I would grab and go. I would definitely be happy to sit and dine next time. I have had various dishes and I would say I have probably tried the entire takeaway menu.
What I love and my comfort food.
Curry Puffs, Vegetarian spring rolls, Mussaman curry chicken or beef, chicken satay sticks, pad Thai with prawns, pad puk stir fry with vegetables and oyster sauce, lots and lots of roti bread.
The menu is extensive and many more options. If you have a large group of friends that you need to feed very good option

Very clean and warm restaurant. The service was fast and professional. The food was delicious and the presentation outstanding. Really tasty Thai food even in comparison to that made in Thailand.

Wasn’t expecting much from this place but was surprised at the quality of the food. Ordered beef red curry and fish cakes. The flavours of the curry were authentic, the serve was generous and included lots of beef and vegetables...they weren’t stingy at all. The fish cakes were also delicious and the sweet chilli sauce that went with them was perfect. Will return and try other items on the menu.

Despite the outside appearance the inside is a nice restaurant. Great food with good service too. Probably the best Thai food in essendon area!

Unexpectedly tasty! I ordered UberEats from here and apart from the long wait, the food was really delicious. I got the Chicken Pad Thai & Red Curry - all very flavoursome will definitely order some again soon...thank you!

Our local Thai place, where we usually get take away (be warned they ALWAYS say 15 minutes wait).
We always order vegetarian curry puffs for entree. Love the curries, especially mussaman & panang. Thai beef salad is also lovely.
Reliable/consistent good Thai food.

Have been here a few times for dinner with my partner. The last time we went was Valentines Day. They fit us in without a booking for dinner even though the restaurant was quite full. We always over order so this time we decided to share some roti, green chicken curry and a pad thai. Food came out quick considering how full the restaurant was. I would say the food is pretty much on average but the service is exceptional. The tall gentleman who looked after us on Valentines Day was amazingly attentive. We took our own wine and our bottle was corked immediately without asking. He packed up our remains for lunch the next day. To top the night off we received a beautiful complementary ice cream desert for Valentines Day. Bill was circa $50. Will be back.
Zero Cool😎😎😎
New and bigger place Been here couple of times with my partner always good experience. Just found my pad Thai a bit soggy due to too much sauce. Good presentation and very friendly staff.

Absolutely disgusting. Chicken was raw, made me and my fiancé feel sick. Horrible. Will never eat there again!!
Ordered satay chicken, completely under cooked the chicken was practically alive. So disappointed.

Quite nice Thai food, rarely need to book, service is fast and even their takeaway is good after a 10min car trip. My fave is always the chicken, chili and basil which is hard to screw up

This is our second trip to this Thai restaurant. First time we were impressed with how tasty their green thai curry was. This time I ordered Pad gratiam pik tai with pork ( stir fry garlic with peppers) which was $18.90. Plus rice $2.50. The serve was small as in palm sized stir fried pork on top of some and some arent stir fried Chinese cabbage. See the photo. They served 90% stalk side of the Chinese cabbage! I would not serve that to anyone let alone a paid customer!!!!!! I know that the stalk side CAN be tasty like when served as kimchi, however not being served like this as a filler and a bed to go with small portion of the meat. I rather not being a whinger either. I must say that the pork tasted really great, but I got so upset about the cooked/raw stalks of Chinese cabbage!!!

Great service and tasty food we got the banquet for two. The portions were great and the service was absolutely outstanding with reasonable prices.

The staff are friendly and we didn't have to wait that long for the food. Though, my chicken pad Thai also tasted like fish like someone mentioned In another review. I really didn't like that fishy taste and there was barely any roasted peanuts. wouldn't order it again. I have been here another time for dinner and I think I'll stick to curries, if I ever go back.

Yum!! Had the Mixed Entree, Mussaman Lamb and Chicken all amazing dishes & full of flavour. Totally satisfied but not bloated. Will go back for sure.

Friendly staff, we got a table right away, could order quickly and the food came quickly too. Plenty of vegetarian options, simple and tasty meals. I'll be coming back here again.
Jo
Food was nice but overpriced..I wanted to take home my left over meal & was charged 50cents for container..that's just crazy!! Especially after we spent heaps on our meals..
Melissa Robinson
I used to eat here quite regularly because it's local and it was decent. The last two times I ate there I found the food quite bland and not worth the price anymore. I won't be going back anytime soon.

Terrible. Dined here last night and could not possibly recommend this restaurant. My meal was cold so I sent it back and three minutes later it reappeared just warm and it was like eating soggy week old leftovers. It was also extremely salty !
My friends meal while hot, was also extremely salty. There was only two tables used, including ours, the whole time we were there so not surprised to wonder why!

Beef massaman curry is amazing, so is the Thai red curry. Nice affordable local restaurant, my husband and I go all the time
Melbfoodie
We had take away from here tonight after not having been for over 3 years. What a difference. The chicken pad Thai tasted like fish, the massaman curry tasted like lemon and the beef in the curry was tough and cheap. Such a shame as this place used to be fantastic.
Pjgirl
The traditional Thai menu items are delicious and full of flavour.

Portion sizes are very reasonable so consider sharing a few if the banquet doesn't take your interest.

I'd personally steer away from the "Chinese"style dishes as they weren't the best.

Overall a great place for an easy stress free dinner and BYO is available. It's not my favourite Thai restaurant but it's not the worse either.

Best Thai we've found to date. Nongkhai has a fresh, authentic taste. If you are into staple Thai meals then their Pad Thai tastes like it should (not some bland haphazard attempt) and their curries have the right balance of spice, sweetness and heat. Steamed fish is another favourite of ours. Takeaway prices are reasonable and won't break the bank (unlike others we've tried that don't taste nearly half as good). So far we rate all other Thai restaurants against this one.

One of my Favourite Places.. One of my favourite places to come for dinner. I have never had a bad experience at this restaurant. The service has always been fantastic and the food has always been delicious. They make an amazing Pad thai, Thai Green Curry and yummy Banana split. I love the feel of the restaurant and the decor. Definitely a place I will continue to come to and would recommend to anyone..

Perhaps we came on a bad night, but it was just all wrong! Diners crammed in together in the front area, while two thirds of the restaurant space wasn't used...average food, inattentive service.,,Can't think of a good reason to return.

Having dined here last night I am at a total loss as to how this restaurant enjoys such high approval. The food was mediocre at best and the service while well intentioned was excruciating. You'd do well to spend your hard earned elsewhere.

Best Thai in Moonee Ponds. This restaurant is brilliant. It has great atmosphere, the menu is extensive and every meal I have had here has been outstanding. Highly recommended.

Great food. Go to this place a lot, always great food, never had a bad meal there yet, waitresses stuff up our orders a few times so make sure they get your order properly before they take off, chicken fried rice is awesome, pad thai is great, tomyum is nice, but don't sook if you order hot and it's too hot, if you want romantic setting stay at home, light some candles.
Logie
Ate here on a sunday and while the place was practically empty the food was really good and service friendly. Will definitely be back

The food here a little short of something really exciting, it is a good feed for what is a great price. I wouldn't call it a favourite, but I'd come back.

This is a great local Thai restaurant. It's easy to miss this place, but well worth stopping for a meal.

The food is tasty, well priced and served in generous portions. Staff are reasonably attentive and quite friendly. I'll definitely be back.

Not nice at all food was cold and tasteless and staff was rude ;(

An all-round delight!. This is easily one the most gorgeous restaurants I've come across and when I say gorgeous that relates to everything about it. From the moment you walk into this restaurant, whether you're dining in or taking-away, the warm, lovely greeting you receive from the staff behind the counter should be enough to confirm that you've gone to the right place. The food is beautiful, fresh and of high quality. The presentation demands praise and the price is very reasonable for such quality. Another positive to this restaurant is that you're not left dehydrated after consuming any of the dishes. Dine-in or takeaway, it makes no difference in terms of food quality. Dining in is an extra treat as you get to enjoy the delightful service a lot longer while in the relaxed surrounds of a restaurant that would out-do even your most well-reputed inner-city equivalent. Worth the train ride out to Strathmore station. Only good words!

Hot on the way in, hot on the way out. First time and last time I'm going there. Statistically unreasonable to extrapolate a conclusion from that sample size, but that's my experience. Better luck to you!

10 cent discrepency. Took mum, dad, megsie and FBI (future brother inlaw) to NTE a few weeks ago (sorry new to urbanspoon as a blogger). Anyway, mixed review. My dish was fantastic, the best whole barramundi i have ever tasted (much to megs disgust- hates fish). entres were nice- roti bread, thai fishcakes (which i dont know how anyone can eat- just look unfriendly) and spring roles.... reportedly nice, though i was saving space for my main. Ordered rice and coconut rice- coconut did not arrive. Dads main was incorrect- and waitress was adament that's what he ordered (though its not).... even bought the docket over to show us hahahaha. went to pay and though it was rather expensive.... paid anyway. 5 minutes later, waitress came over and told me id paid the wrong bill.... they overcharged 49.90. No worries- give me the change.... this is my only real negative- rather than give me the 50 in cash, when i said i had no 10 cent change, they then refunded the 49.90 to my account instead.... hmmmm.

Just great. I go here few times a month. They do sit in and take away. Service is fantastic! Can't get better! Food is great. Never have to wait long for food. So tasty! Great prices! You can't ask for more!!

This place is always good - its never busy on a sunday night mainly take aways so its not too loud. curries are amazing - i have tried most things on the menu all good but stay clear from the claypot. food 9/10 service 9.5/10 great!!

Fabulous. Saturday we went and had the banquet so much food, the best Tom ka soup, chilli calamari salad was delicious, pork dish on the banquet menu was sensational

Dont listen to these people. If you want good prices for good thai food this is the place you should go.

Overpriced!!!

This is our local Thai restaurant and we come here often. The service is warm and friendly and the food is consistently good. Although this may not be the best Thai in Melbourne, if you are looking for a meal in this area you will not be disappointed.

Very average. I suspect this restaurant is still in business due to the location, and for no other reason. That is, it's next the to Cross Keys Hotel and there is nothing else around within walking distance.

I always rate a Thai place by the quality of their chicken pad thai. It was greasy and way too sweet. I also ordered the beef with garlic and pepper, which contained tough meat in a watery sauce.

There are far better Thai places around, I won't be going back.
