We went to the RSL for the Robertson brothers show which was fantastic, but made the grave mistake of deciding to eat at the Bistro beforehand. What an absolute debacle. We had never been there before but booked a table for an hour and a half before the show thinking we would have plenty of time - BIG Mistake. Not only had we to find our own table with a reserve sign, but had to join the line snaking through the tables for half an hour before we could order - no social distancing here. When we got to the front of the queue to order we were told sorry if you're going to the show your options are limited - not enough time. We ordered the lamb shanks and vegetables, one hour later with moments to spare before the show started, our meal arrived. The lamb was tender with a rich salty gravy and mash, but the rest of the vegetables were inedible. Carrots, broccoli and cauliflower were raw and cold, I think they forgot to cook them, either that or they just waved them over the hotplate. We quickly ate what we could, then attended the show, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Would I go to the Bistro again, never in a million years, not unless they get their act together and get organised. Sorry guys, your Bistro needs a total management makeover.

I have been doing volunteering work for the people that were affected by the floods. They have lost everything.

We've just had lunch at the Evans Head RSL , fish of the day, and it was truly of very poor quality. I'd be surprised if it was anything other than Asian or New Zealand frozen import. The salad looked and tasted like yesterday's left overs. Without doubt one of the most ordinary meals I've ever had at an RSL club.

Had dinner there tonight (group of 6). Three of my group had the ‘special’ 250g rump steak, chips & salad. The steak was tough, hard to cut and chewy - very disappointed. I had seafood marinara - again very poor quality - the sauce had no flavour and tasted like a canned sauce while the amount of seafood was meagre. The crumbed lamb cutlets were delicious and the fish cakes were ok. Desserts - 1 x cheese cake and 1x pavlova - they were good. The club itself was fine, but I would definitely not recommend the main meals.

Large establishment with a reputation for quality food. I can attest to great service at a very fair price. Views on two sides to help drinks go down.

First time visiter to Evans Head :), came here to visit a friend who is here on a working Visa :). Didn't know what to expect cause i found this place on trip advisor and it had 3 reviews.. a negative 1 star reveiw, a semi bad review and a pleasant review.. In all honestly I'm more than happy with my 5 star review cause there is nothing to fault with this place... I'm thinking that the previous reviewers might be used to the 4 star luxury pub hotels back home in their respected citys lol!! If anyone can find a fault with this 2 star hotel with a single room bed for 1 person with shared bathroom for $27 a night - to a double 2 person room with private bathroom and shower and balcony for $88 a night, pleasd do so. But keep in mind that this is a small town between Grafton & Ballina and that your staying at Pub Hotel not just a hotel :)!! The Bistro had delicous food here aswell, had the fishermans basket myself and was pleased with the outdoor seating area where you could sit down and chill out with a cold beer with the locals :), and everyone says Hello or how are you over here.. a bit like Europe.. am just suprised cause you don't get that from many Sydney siders lol.. All in all I loved my stayed here at Hotel Illawong and on my next visit I won't be staying anywhere else but here :)! !

Stopped in for lunch. What a gem! Fantastic squid and soft shell Crab. Catered for gluten free. Beautiful. Massive tender steak and ripper stone and wood battered fish. Will be back!

My friend & I ate dinner twice over 3 days at the 'Wong during a fishing trip. We are both from family food business backgrounds & are subsequently quite fussy about service & food quality relative to price. All up we were both happy with the menu & prices & although trade was very heavy the service was excellent & surprisingly prompt. The quality of the food for us both across two dinner sittings was good , my Wong Cheeseburger was good but my mates Pizza was absolutely outstanding. I could nit pick & claim on our second night my Viking Steak was a bit over from rare as ordered but it was massive (hard to cook) & the fat was rendered very well, the wine jus was well made & the side veggies were cooked to perfection. No problem going back there when we are back in Evens Head.

One of the many highlights of our annual Easter break in Evans Head. Food great especially the "cheese burger", service always spot on and great selection of tap beers. The only thing is the wine selection could be a little better...

Visited the illawong last night, ordered the Rump Steak, Salad and Beer Battered Chips. was served promptly, and meal was cooked well, Steak was medium as ordered. My friends and I, Have been frequenting this establishment for more than three years now and over all have been happy with the food and service... only a few times have we had to ask for a meal to be redone, and to my suprise, each of those times the staff were happy to help correct the issue making the experience a good one. I understand that the hospitality industry can get busy, I worked hospitality for years.... and found, that as a customer the best thing to do if there is a mistake, is to remain calm and pleasant, and without blame ask the staff (politely) if they could fix the issue being sure to explain it in a positive way. In life, you get back, what you give out.... remain positive. I've found the majority of Staff at the HOTEL ILLAWONG, to be friendly and helpful. As for the 4 stars, that's a high mark from me... without mentioning establishment names, I've given so called 5star resorts and hotels a lower rating.... many a time. Sincerely Martin St.John.
