Review Mamma Says - Fairfield

Always great food & service

Came here while on a visit to Melbourne and had looked for cafes with vegan options near where we were staying. This place ended up being a totally AMAZING find. Staff were super friendly and helpful around the menu and the food was incredible. The whole menu is plant-based and there is a range of options from healthy to indulgent. We had both vegan and non vegan people in our group and everyone loved their meals. The cafe has inside and outside seating, plus is pet friendly. The coffee is great, and takeaways are available. Honestly would eat here everyday 😊

Had a nice meal with the family. Service was friendly and food was served in a timely manner. They have gelato up to the front as well as good selection of dessert. Will still return here though as it isn't bad.

I grabbed a muffin and a cookie on my was to F1 race. The muffin: hash brown and egg (all plant based) was amazing and so tasty. Much better that i expected and can really recommend it. Cookie was super too. Next time I will try the Parma from the menu. And staff is so friendly.

Quite busy but a lovely place. Staff was very friendly. My risotto was absolutely fantastic !

One good coffee deserves another, so I bookended my Big Breakfast with oat milk cappuccinos. And breakfast was very tasty, too!
Jen Cresp
The food here is incredible! Amazing staff, great vibes. So many vegan options that everyone can enjoy. One of my favourite places in Melbourne
Lucas L Jordan
Amazing new plant based menu a treat in the inner north for vegans! Amazing food lovely staff and great coffee. We had the Mediterranean grill plate and the chili scramble tofu both were very tasty and the portions were very generous.
Bernadette Hodson
Great place to eat and the service is amazing the staff are so helpful and courteous always love going there.

We have been having Sunday Brunch at Mamma Says for many years..guess that says it all. Food is consistent and good. Friendly attentive staff and Coffee is always good.
Jenny Begent
My favourite place - great coffee, great food, great staff- feels like home
James Heggie
Always friendly staff and great service. The food is always enjoyable and exceptionally tasty. Good drinks selection as well.

This is the second cafe that I have been to that Nick & his family have operated. The meals, the staff & the service are awesome. The coffee is the best around, but l guess it would have to be as Nick always seems to be drinking it at one of his many tables... lol
Debbie Beaumont
Great food good service with nice staff we will definitely be coming back
Shannon Ryan
Italian doughnuts are the BEST with great coffee served..
Normandy Calma
Killer Coffee at Mamma Says! Love the 'talian Donut too!
Considered Opinion
Owner smokes outside on the council provided bench seats and throws his cigarette butts on the footpath. He does not deserve the patronage of local residents whose rates are used to clean up his littering.
Expat Gourmand
Mamma Says on Station Street is a favourite amongst the locals. The menu contained the usual brunch favourites featuring eggs like a few varieties of eggs benedict, omelettes, and the big breakfast, as well as a couple more decadent selections like pancakes and french toast. There were also lighter options like toast, muesli and yoghurt, and more substantial mains for lunch like chicken parma, grilled lamb and steak sandwich. There are plenty of choices to suit a variety of tastebuds and appetites. We have been to Mamma Says twice now, and can confirm that is consistently great, whether for a quick coffee or a proper meal.

I love the coffee from Mamma Says! I have tried their donuts and muffins and they are delicious and fresh.. the service is always good from the lady behind the counter to the friendly barista.
Glenda C
Absolutely delicious food and fantastic friendly staff. The only down side is the location as parking is a nightmare. However it is worth the effort.
Split The Bill
I was looking for quick breakfast in the area and glad we stumbled across this place. Service was great. Coffee was great! My husband says 5 stars for the French toast with mascarpone and pistachios! It was delicious. My apricot toast was yum! We will be back to try more! <br/><br/>

I believe that the quality of a cafe can be judged in their simplest meal. If you can make me an egg and bacon which reverberates throughout my soul and puts me in a good mood for a week; you’re doing your job well. <br/><br/>I ordered a brunch of poached eggs, avocado, smoked salmon and hollandaise and woweee mamasita I was NOT DISAPPOINTED! Portion wise; very generous. 2 slices of toast and enough smoked salmon for egg/salmon medley forkfuls WITH salmon leftover at the end. Hollandaise was delicious and still warm, and avocado bright green and SLICED not mashed (not trying to hide and bruises 👏)<br/><br/>Great service, great coffee. My only criticism is that the benches are too high for the tables...leaving one feeling as if they are sitting on a throne 😂

Living in and around Fairfield and Northcote we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to food, in particularly breakfast and lunch. Mamma Says is easily one of the best in the North with their choice for breakfast and lunch, they tick all the boxes. <br/><br/>The thing that stands out for me is their Coffee. I’ve pretty much tried every cafe in Fairfield and surrounding suburbs and found they have by far the best Coffee in the North. <br/><br/>Perfect

I went to Mamma Says after a nice morning of horse riding. I ordered the Amatricana and I was very impressed with the sauce. Was slightly spicy plus the servings sizes of both my dish and my friend's pasta dish were huge! We couldn't even finish our meal!<br/><br/>The biggest highlight for me was definitely the smoothie I ordered which was called the Cold Killer. It is a dairy free smoothie with peach, nana and raspberry sorbet with orange juice and multivitamins. Definitely one of the best smoothies I've ever tried and I would come back again just for the smoothie!
Two Sheds
A nice little cafe. I quite liked the look and feel of the place. There appeared to be various works by Banksy on the walls and that certainly works for me. I had a large coffee and a slice of banana bread. The coffee was expertly made. I like my mugs of coffee and more often than not they're under strength. Not here. It was lovely and creamy and just the right strength. Top marks. The banana bread looked ok but was sadly too sweet in my view. The staff were lovely here and the place had lovely comforting vibe about it. I liked it and I wouldn't hesitate to return.

Quite possibly the best coffee I've ever had. The big breakfast was great as well. Good value for money, high quality produce and nice atmosphere.

A great cafe is more than just good food and great coffee  – as there are many places that can boast that. <br/><br/>A really great cafe has a heart and soul and staff than make you feel at home. Mamma Says is all of the above. <br/><br/>Food and coffee service is fast, for eat in or take away, and the speed never compromises the quality. The meals are a substantial  and additional elements or variations come with a real smile and not a grimace. When you can deal with a carnivore, a vegetarian fussy kids and not break a sweat you’re on a winner.<br/><br/>More importantly the tag of kid friendly is not lip service our children are always greeted by name and with a big hearty smile.  The friendly banter and ready smiles just make it tick, tick, tick.<br/><br/>Mamma Says is unashamedly my local and destination of choice.

My favourite cafe in Fairfield. The breakfasts are great and reasonably priced. The staff are lovely and friendly. It's also an excellent spot to have a pot of tea out the front and do some quality people watching!
TwoLittle Ducks
I have tried this place three times hoping it would be better every time but it keeps missing the mark. <br/>Everything falls short of being enjoyable, the foods ok, prices are ok, atmosphere is ok, nothing to make me actually want to go back or recommend it unfortunately.

Had lunch here one Thursday arvo with my mum, sister and niece. Cosy place. Friendly service. Food came out extremely quick (10minutes). Food in the display cabinet didn't look to fresh so we ordered 2 orders of the arancini and I had the smashed avo with poached egg. It was pretty standard - good but not great. Didn't like how they gave you 2 pieces of toast, significant amount of feta and avo (yum!) but only one poached egg - which was overcooked. However, the OJ was delicious and thick and we all left full.
Traveller123890
Been here few times, coffee is good and breakfasts are nice ( sometimes not very big portion) i personally think they could lower a bit the prices, one of the last time i went i paid almost 80$ for 2 breakfast, 2 coffee and 2 freshly squeeze juices and i tought it was a bit expensive.<br/>Give it a go and judje for yourself... the place has a wonderful courtyard at the back.

We moved to Fairfield a year ago and have tried all cafes for breakfast and this is our favorite. We have never been disappointed by any dish. The coffee is definitely the best in Fairfield. Service is always fast and friendly.
Local 3078
Love this local cafe! Go here 2-3 times a week for breakfast! Friendly staff, great owners and excellent food!<br/><br/>Some of the best coffee in Melbourne!<br/><br/>Lunch is also really good - salads are amazing! <br/><br/>Pick of the bunch in Station St!
Happy
Great coffee and food with Friendly owners and staff. So many options on the menu which covers everything . Awesome cafe in Fairfield great work .
Crispymelbreview
Hard to believe this place does not get a higher rating. The baristas make excellent coffee. The breakfast menu is above standard from friends that have sampled it. The owners are hardcore coffee enthusiasts and they will happily converse. All-in-all an underrated gem in Fairfield.
World In A Bite
Really good creamy soy latte! Lovely service and nice decoration ... I was on the go, so didn't have time to try food here. The Italian donut looks so nice! It's on my Wishlist now 😊
YumOrYuck
Tasty food and well presented. Though little expensive, but worth the taste.<br/>Will eat again.<br/>Food: Yum<br/>Ambience: "Cool "<br/>Price: $10-$20<br/>Recommend: Yes

Best place for Great Coffee. Take away coffee come out really fast. Delicious Food. Usually have my lunch break at Mama Says. Good customer care.👍👌

Grey food great place . Will definitely go back and recommend to others . Staff were friendly and great service . Some people still no how to satisfy customers
Smikg Needs Coffee
...the coffee was really good, and it was only after we’d drank it that bestie and I conversed and both agreed how smooth the coffee had been. She also commented that there was no strong soy taste, and though I don’t drink the stuff what she said made total sense...
Sabrina Foenander
Best coffee on the strip. Great breakfast. Love love the Bircher with poached pear. Service with a smile. Always great banter with the staff. And have I mentioned the coffee? Love it. It's my go to down station st.
Hannahreal22
Not a fan. As a local I’ve been holding off on going to this place having been to the owners last venture; the ill fated and daggy ‘Station Lounge’. Like some other reviewers I’m disappointed management hasn't learned from previous mistakes; average food, average coffee, average service. The interior is lovely but I wouldn't recommend.
Mina Magelakis
Fantastic restaurant, great family vibe, good coffee and the food was exceptional! Surprised to see such a low percentage of people liking this place, really was impressive and we will be back!
Carly.cooper
Fabulous food. Amazing food for breakfast and great service! Will definately be back :) thanks mamma says
Angi McAuley
DELICIOUS!! Great coffee & a fab breakfast menu! Love it
Sharyn Honey
Good coffee but the avo smash serving was extremely stingey for the $16 price.

Mamma Says Blah. Coffee is blah, service is blah and food is blah.
Hm
Worst meal I've ever had and will never be going back. I ordered the Lamb Kofta off the specials menu which came with some pita and a side of salad. The Kofta did not taste fresh at all... tasted highly processed and tasted like they had just been un-thawed and heated on the pan. For $17.90 and for something on the specials menu I was expecting much more and something freshly made. The pita tasted dry and the salad had way too much balsamic vinegar. I left more than half my meal as I did not enjoy it... it didn't even look appetizing. Very disappointed as I am a local and won't be recommending this place to any of my friends :(

Same Same Same Same. Hadn't been since they moved from 5 shops away. Place looks pretty, but way too small. Food is almost identical to old cafe, service is the same, people are the same (at least the owners). Same attitude, same fare, crowded, noisy. On a positive note, pricing was reasonable and the courtyard looked great. Took mum and dad. They had never been to it (or the old cafe). They liked it. But would we go back or recommend? Probably not.

Shame about the eggs!. We popped into Mamma Says on a Sunday post the lunch rush. We ordered from the all day breakfast menu - a Mamma's Big Breakfast and the Avocado Smash. <br/>The Big Breakfast was enormous - a really generous serving of bacon, toast, potato rosti, sausage and eggs cooked how you like them. Avocado Smash was 2 pieces of toast with a thick layer of avo and fetta. Everything was well cooked and well seasoned except the poor old eggs. Out of 3 poached eggs, 2 were rock hard and one was runny just as they should be....
PrincessYoko
Veggie Breakfast. Lovely vegetarian breakfast. The hash browns alone are worth it - light, tasty and crunchy. The breakfast itself is a top quality balanced plate of food. Eggs poached to perfection. Black coffee with hot milk on the side is excellent but poor value - the serving in the cup is way too short. For such a busy cafe (at brunch anyway) the service is excellent. The only drawback with Mamma Says is the lack of space as the tables are quite crowded together. I wouldn't recommend going during busy times if you want to discuss anything private! Overall, excellent value.<br/>Update: Extra courtyard seating now available, yay! Still enjoying this place - despite the awkward coffee cups.

Yummm!. Had the steak sandwich and parma, with coffee - could not fault anything! Service was perfect as well :)

I've eaten here a couple of times now and every meal has been beautiful and full of flavour. I love the modern theme and homely feel of the place and the staff are very lovely and accomodating all in all an excellent place to have breakfast or lunch, I suggest their Ice Coffee and The Atlantic
Phil Hare
Great local cafe. I've had breakfast here 3 weekends in a row, with a similar experience each time. Good service, good coffee, and seriously yummy food. Each visit I have had their Spanish Eggs, and have loved them each time. The place can get quite busy as it is a very popular place, but I have had no problems with service or food quality. Highly recommended.<br/><br/>Just want to add a note in March 2016 that I still love this place.
Alt
Great feed.. Coffee was okay. food was good value and tasty. we ate the nachos, good price and portion. not too much cheese like some places do. definitely worth checking out.
Gemini_mum
I love this place- the staff are LOVELY and the food and coffee is consistently good. It's not overpriced like many places nearby. Will keep going back!

The Best coffee in Station st !!!<br/>With a good service ,almond & apricot muffin is very nice
Catrina
Good local. Also surprised by the negative reviews - have been twice and both times happy with the food and coffee is good. More homely than the more hipster 15lbs cafe down the road
Dars
OK OK. I like coffee when this new team member is there ! got really good coffee maker although very hard to get regular basis because he works on Monday to Wednesday and I'm very impress, I hope thay'll keep up with standered <br/><br/>thanks raz nice work !
Southern Belle
We arrived for brunch just before the lunchtime rush, when the tables filled rapidly. Polished concrete floor, light decor, tables were placed too close together in some cases. Coffee was good, my tea was served pleasantly hot in a teapot. Dishes served up were attractively styled and generous portions, menu had a good variety, also old-fashioned milkshakes and a lot of smoothies as well. Scrambled eggs were firm(some would say over cooked but my companion prefers his eggs this way) bacon was a bit leathery instead of crisp. Toast was sourdough and difficult to eat. My omelette was over cooked and dry with edges almost burnt, mushies, tomato and avocado all very tasty. Prices were very cheap, so you can forgive a lot if you are not being asked to pay top dollar. An average meal overall with room for improvement

Loved it. We've been twice and I've been hugely impressed by the service and the food. Best bacon ever. I am also impressed by the responses from the owners below, I think that everyone should try this place and give it a go. It's my new favourite place in Fairfield.

Had the big breakfast this morning - delicious and well cooked. Coffee was great too!
Jody
Great local!. I'm surprised by the negative reviews although i guess everyone has their off days, I often call in as I'm a local, staff are great, food is the 'norm' cafe but it's nice! Focaccia's are light instead of the heavy ones, it's a new cafe and i think they are still refining, but it's worth a go! The decor is lovely.

What a find!!! As a local, I am always on the look out for an affordable friendly and consistent place to go. Well may I say we ( my wife, our 3yr old and I) have found it!! The service is always welcoming and genuine. Knowledge of the food (most is made on premises) is impeccable and matched by an understanding of there coffee. That they no-longer roast their own coffee is not a concern as if anything this has lead to a consistent reliable and enjoyable cuppa each time. The food is an authentic home style. Put together with the service Mamma Says truly out shines it's many competitors. They have always greeted the 3 of us warmly and have been patient and understanding when the little one decides to voice his opinions or re-arrange furniture! Ps it's ok we do try to stick to off peak times for the sake of other patrons.
Coffees Out
Drove past thought I would give it a go. <br/>Great looking place, with clean fresh food offer(try the lamb salad). The coffee was great. Sad part is that I am not a local.

Mamma Says, "You stuffed up". First time I am writing on Urban spoon since I didn't feel the need to ever do so, but might as well start now. If Mamma Says has got anything to go for it, its the way it has been fitted, quite nice. Other then that not worth the trip. For a place that SUPPOSEDLY roasts its own coffee well they have to do a better job at that. Coffee was bitter and extremely hot, thought I'd received third degree burns but the cup I drank out of was nice. Food nothing special and took ages to come out even though they only had three other tables (half an hour). Overall wouldn't go back when I'm in the area cause there are plenty other places on the street to go to.

Always a good coffee hear, and the big breakfast is exactly that BIG and tastey! Simple fresh food what more could one want!
Frank Datank
Won't be going back! The service was great, food just ok, but... Whilst I was enjoying a coffee with my partner, i heard who I believe to be the owner speaking and treating their staff terribly. I will not be going back for this reason. Shame on you Mamma Says. Cafés don't survive without good staff and your heading that way.
LG
Nothing Special. Unfortunately this place doesn't quite hit the mark. The menu is expensive and unexciting. It's a shame really.
Hal Greenham
Great pies, and pie+salad for $8.50 a pretty good deal for lunch I reckon. I am surprised by so many negative comments, I've been twice and found it tasty and friendly, like the vibe of the fitout, good to see more options on station st.
Jack Charles
Enjoyed the outside eating area. Felt a little squashed though. Food was good, served by a lovely young waiter last Saturday morning who was very helpful and patient with me as I was not feeling my greatest, I think I heard someone call her Nicole. Will be visiting again!
Stuart Donald
Bad experience. Long wait for food. Left after 40 mins without getting anything to eat. Long wait for food seemed to be the norm. Coffee was decent. Lady at counter was pleasant and waived cost of the coffee. Wouldn't go back.
Trav1979
We had breakfast here on the 4th of Jan. Friendly, efficient service and a delicious meal with the best smoothies. Give the strawberry rush a go!!! We will be back!
Cous Cous
OK but not amazing. Unlike many of the other reviewers I thought the coffee was nice - a big improvement on their previous business (Station St Lounge). Would return for coffee.<br/><br/>The food took forever to come out. Everyone in the cafe was getting quite impatient. 40 mins at least. <br/><br/>My boyfriend had the parma & I got the beetroot risotto. Good thing we weren't in a hurry. Both meals were fine & generous portions (7.5/10). The beetroot could have been a bit better cooked in the risotto.<br/><br/>I wouldn't rush back but it was fine.
The Hungry Dietitian
Cute and quirky. Cute new spot in Fairfield so thought we'd give it a try. Coffee was wonderful and ordered the big breakfast to share. It was great but the hollondaise was quite acidic. A bit on the pricey side but it's what you expect in this area. They had too many staff on and was approached to order three times when we sat down. Still finding its feet maybe. Needs refining. Water on the table would be nice.
Iris Myandowski
Good mocha.
Matina Carelli
Awesome staff, food & coffee will be back
Zee
Really vague service. Tasteless nachos. Smoothie came in a foam cup, asked for a glass, got no sorry just there it is. Nice interior, coffee was ok. Think they need to train staff and communicate more to their customers. Give it a miss. No proper service
Russ
Russ. Been twice, enjoyed the service, coffee, omelette, friendly staff and I even left my own shop to go there!

I thought if give this new cafe a try, it looked pretty standard as cafés go. Very minimalist and unoriginal. The coffee itself was bland and unexciting for a place that boasts its own roast. I didn't try their food but the size of their menu offering things that's people in the 90's would think were out of date is going to hinder them significantly.<br/>There is a lot of competition opening up in Fairfield and I think mamma's going to be left behind.
Sunnybear59
Mamma says "Don't go there!". There's not a lot on offer down in Fairfield by way of original cafes, so when this one opened I thought I'd give it a try. When I realised the owner was that of the old Station Lounge I was cringing. Coffee took ages. Coffee was pathetic. Food took way too long to arrive... and was way below average. Same old stodge, but new grass to eat on.
Cafe Addict
I've been to lots of cafes globally. I've been to this cafe more than once to give it a chance yet same thing happened. Eggs weren't poached they're hard, coffees taste burnt, water tastes like soap, and staff are overworked, one is fast, while another is working very slow, and other ones they're too tired to smile. Very crowded spacing. This is poor management.
Teresa
Stooped in today to give the newbie a try. My latte was spot and and the donuts are amazing. Give it a try.
JPo
Super bland. Decided to give it a shot when Organic Gertrude was shut against my better judgement, having read the underwhelming menu on the window. <br/><br/>Station St seems to have an issue with cafes offering up really bland standards (foccacias, pies/tarts etc). <br/><br/>I had a gluten free corn and bacon tart which was completely tasteless. I sent it back and got a chicken tart instead. Also tasteless. My friends had salt and pepper squid and a marinara pasta. The squid was bog standard and again bland. The marinara looked like two scoops of frozen marinara mix stirred through pasta... not nice! <br/><br/>The place looks the business and the people were fine but the food was super disappointing.
Emmilio
Rubbish coffee. Considering they claim to be coffee roasters, I decided to try it but the coffee I had today was fairly rubbish. It seems to be family run, and is nice inside, but the barista clearly has no idea of the difference between a latte and flat white. I paid $4 for a cup of half froth, half weak milky coffee, when I asked for a strong flat white. After about three sips, it was gone. <br/><br/>Wont be returning.
F.sonnal
Gluten Free Friendly!. So glad to finally have a place that caters so much towards gluten free foods!<br/><br/>Enjoyed a breakfast with hashbrowns for the first time in so long. Got a few gluten free cakes to take home and enjoy later. Choc fudge to die for!<br/><br/>Love love love! And a huge thank you to the staff who made sure my allergies were catered to.
Paris
The best coffee on station street! I really don't know what these people are on about but my experience at "mamma says" was amazing. I went there this morning for breakfast and the food was divine. The staff were very friendly, they came and asked me how my meal was and just had a general conversationand with me. I really enjoyed my experience and will definitely returning and telling all my friends and family about this cafe.
