Review Matsuya - Fairfield

Sargon Younan
It was a great experience. Service was excellent and quick once ordered through the app or thought person, which was great to have a human. The staff were helpful and friendly, willing to go above and beyond to assist with my order. Food was excellent and fresh, which is good I would recommend going again. It is a great local Japanese restaurant only thing is I found the menu was a bit confusing for the first time, but it was worth it.

Good atmosphere, and has a happy hour during lunch time. The bento boxes were okay, but not the best taste, if not being unauthentic Japanese. Most of the stuffs were quick deep fried, and the tempura coats were a bit fallen off. Overall, this is suitable for a quick lunch on the go, which a reasonable price for people who are not too picky.

Soup base of udon is pretty good. Tempura was still crunchy when served. Good portion, very full after finishing the food. Sashimi was alright. All in all 4 star for food quality but extra star for good servicing.

I dined with some friends there. We ordered for an assortment of starters and main dishes. We ordered salmon & avocado roll get, and was amazing . Also we had sesame and green tea ice-creams, really really nice. I'll be back.

Been here a few times and never disappoints. Staff are friendly and quick to help. Food was delicious and fresh

We ordered a deluxe for 2 and it was too much to finish! The quality of the produce was amazing, so much so that I would not be shy to bring my Japanese friends by next time. Service was also polite and attentive - thanks!

One of my favourite restaurants - service is fast, food is fresh and beautifully presented and the newly renovated restaurant is always packed! We always book a table and order the mixed sushi boat as a starter, followed by Katsu Curry Don. The soft shell crab is also a favourite entree, so fresh and delicious. We have also tried the banquet meal - and its plentiful.... no room for dessert! Love coming here and highly recommend Matsuya!

Amidst a chilly night in the outer Melbourne suburbs, we found ourselves a surprisingly cozy eatery. With a good starting take on what Japanese cuisine is all about and by that we mean great tast and fresh ingredients with awesome Sushimi and Sushi of the land and sea. Do not let the outer Facade fool you because what lies inside awaitingly is great and friendly service with hard to fault Japanese Cuisine.

Absolutely love this place, one of my go to Japanese restaurants. The salmon and tuna is amazing quality and the gyoza is always cooked to perfection
Antony Alderuccio
Good food and friendly stuff have been back not long ago and the experience is the same every time. Food is always fresh and corkage is reasonable.
Son Of Wayne
Delicious Japanese flavours with a modern twist. The Wafu beef is amazing. A great place to bring the whole family and the little ones, really welcoming and cosy.
Liv
Love this place for sushi and an Udon soup. Would highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a good Japanese place in the area. It can get very busy so you will need to book in advance.

Had a nice dinner with my uni friend. Ordered the special sushi boat. Only recommend if your friend can eat raw food otherwise they may prefer the hot dishes. Personally, I love sushi so this was quite good and generous. I may come back to try other dishes.

A busy Japanese restaurant with nice lighting but slighlty cramped. The staff were very friendly and polite.

Wagyu beef sukiyaki is okay but the sukiyaki broth was quite salty and price was slightly expensive. The broth initially bubbled at the start but half way stopped making it take longer to cook and was quite shallow. The wagyu was frozen and thawed but the taste was soft and tender. A generous amount of vegetables.

Went here for my birthday had about 9 guests. Food came out in a timely matter considering the large quantity that we ordered. Food was tasty and was a generous serve. Staff were very courteous, friendly and willing to lend a hand when we needed something.

Always amazing. Never disappoints. Love coming here.
Fresh and always tasty. Never had a bad meal, and always recommend to friends too. Yum YUM

This is the best Japanese I have ever had. Order anything and you won’t be disappointed. Wonderful, fresh sashimi is always a hit. A bit pricy but worth the treat.

There is a gem of a Japanese restaurant in our neighbourhood. It ticks all the boxes for what we look for in a good Japanese restaurant: fresh ingredients, authentic preparation and presentation, and delicious food. It's a bonus that it is a walk of less than 10 minutes from our front door, and there is even an early bird discount for dinner everyday - perfect for our kids who have early bedtimes. We have dined at Matsuya twice - once on a lunch date without the kids, and another time for an early dinner with the whole family - and have also ordered a takeaway sushi platter for one kid's birthday celebration a few months ago. There was a wide range of Japanese dishes on the menu, to suit even the pickiest of eaters, like my kids can be. The fish and seafood were always of excellent quality, and other dishes were delicious and tasted just the same as those we ate while we lived in Japan. The service was what one would expect of Japanese hospitality, and prices were reasonable for this calibre of dining.

Incredible clean Japanese cuisine. Located in the Fairfield shops this gem serves some authentic food with a twist. The sushi boat for 2 is generous and well crafted

Absolutely woeful food. We were looking for something quick and tasty and got quick.

Glad we were sat at a four seat table as one of the seats was filthy. The staff almost insisted we should have the 4 dishes we ordered one st a time in the order they suggested. Seemed almost angry when we said no.

The gyoza were tasteless and greasy, and seemed remarkably like the ones you get frozen in coles. The same for the mini spring rolls- the hoop inside was vaguely salty and unpleasant.
The seafood fried rice was frankly embarrassing. It was a mound of boiled rice mixed in a frying pan with 4 prawns and a packet of frozen diced veg, right down to the corn peas and carrots. No seasoning no flavour, just greasy nastiness.
The yakesoba, also greasy with a few over cooked bits of chewy meat lacked flavour and any resemblance to yakesoba.

The diet cokes were spot on, but a glass rather than a straw might be an idea.

Given that there are 2 other Japanese restaurants close by, I’d suggest going to them.
Linnie Eats All The Food
After a day of Archery Attack we decided to refuel somewhere close and of course we wanted something healthy and opted for Matsuya in Fairfield. It was super busy when we got there and luckily for us they managed to squeeze us all in. The gyozas were so fat and plump and GINORMOUS! It was juicy, it was succulent and the flavour was oh so delish!

Casual, relaxed and friendly environment and lovely fresh food. Love the sushi and sashimi staples and the rice and noodle dishes. Matsuya remains a local favourite after many years.

Service: I haven’t dined in, delivery is prompt which is expected cause I live near the area
Ambience: They had a recent renovation, it was looking dated so glad to see that the decor has been updated. It looks good, it’s busy during dinner time especially in weekends. Will try to dine in sometime soon
Food: I tend to have takeaway or delivery, food has always been tasty. Prepared very well. Is it the best Japanese restaurant I’ve been in no. But it’s still very good.
Price: I do find them more on the pricey side, especially compared to some smaller Japanese restaurant in Melbourne CBD. Still good is great so at least you won’t be disappointed
Overall: Matsuya is very handy living near by and when I feel like Japanese it is a good restaurant so I would always be back picking up my takeaway. I really need to dine in one day.

Fantastic service from the waitresses, food ok but lacking wow factor. We had the $32 banquet. Teriyaki beef dish was tender and was ok but lacking flavor.
Danni Minutoli
House Sake paired perfectly with the Sizzling Wafu steak. Extremely tender pieces and very delicious marinade. This resturant had a really authentic atmosphere and service was perfect. It was a wonderful night
Dino
I absolutely love this place. It's always my pick when someone asks: "Where do you wanna go to eat?". The food always tastes fresh & delicious, and the staff are very friendly. My only criticism is the wait staff reach over the table to clear it, often while you're still eating! I'd rather it be left til the end of the meal. Otherwise it's always perfect, thank you! :)
Alex Giomataris
We always get amazing service everytime we come here. Recently they were very accommodating when we changed our booking last minute on a friday to add an extra person. The food is super fresh and amazing, best Japanese in Fairfield/Northcote

Beautiful Japanese restaurant, definitely makes a trip to this area worth it!

My recommendations are:
Unadon - some of the best unadon I have had outside of Japan.
Aburi salmon nigiri - ditto what I said about the unadon. In general the sushi here is great! Handmade and freshly made to order !
Grilled ox tongue - give it a go! Beautifully seasoned and cooked!

I have also tried the wagyu shabu shabu, fried squid and croquette which were also pretty good.
Gyoza was so-so, I’d probably give this a miss next time.
The main reason it’s not 5stars is because the umeshu serve is pitiful. Not even half a glass full and it’s filled with big ice cubes, you’d struggle to get more than a mouthful.
Richy
Good japanese restaurant with good food and pretty good service. Everything tasted fresh and was well prepared. As many japanese restaurants - not cheap - but here you get fresh food. Definitely a place worth visiting if you're in the neighbourhood. (3,5 stars)
Michelle Mei
Great friendly local sushi place, don’t expect anything super fancy, just great fresh affordable Japanese food.

Have been coming back almost every fortnight. The sushi is so fresh that they are addictive.
Jessica 99
Lovely Japanese restaurant that’s been around for ages. I’ve been coming here for years and most certainly will continue to!
Service is always excellent and the food is always fresh and delicious.
Great job Matsuya. Keep it up.
Make sure you book as it's a very popular restaurant! Everything was fresh and cooked perfectly. The Wafu steak melted in our mouths! Will be back again.

Weather - Cold autumn’s night craving some fresh seafood

Food - Tuna Tataki, Matsu Maki Roll and House Combo

The Tuna Tataki melted in our mouths and was delicious while Matsu Maki was fresh and tasty.
The House Combo was well presented, very fresh, delicious and great value for money

Service and Decor - Service was prompt and friendly, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming

This place has become a go to place to satisfy our Japanese cravings as it is always fresh and delicious

• The Hungry Nugget •

This restaurant has Great food and friendly staff - definitely worth to try. The setting is quite casual but you barely notice with the quality of the food. Everything was served very quickly and in large portions.

Quick service! Great food and good value for money! Sushi was fresh!! Would not advise on the oysters though. Altogether a lovely experience!!

My friend and me tried Yosenabe and Salmon last night. The hot pot is great and we both are very full. We both like the hot pot so much as it’s fresh and tasty.

Have dined at Ichi ni na na a few times, food was enjoyable servings could be larger, pricing not bad, parking a pain, also tried a couple of other Japanese restaurants in Ivanhoe. Looked around and read reviews on Matsuya Fairfield, so booked 3.3.2018 for 5.30, well sorry Ichi and others you have lost us, Matsuya you now have a regular new customer. Food excellent, soft shell crab, tempura, perfect thin batter super crispy, sashimi mix, fried noodles and attentive staff, and boy what value for money very good size portions not stingy like a lot of Japanese places, we left there absolutely chockers,
restaurant was full when we left at 6.45 pm, $86.00 with one beer and spark water, can’t beat that. Can’t wait for our next visit. ( PS have also dined at Nobu, however Matsuya tempura leaves Nobu’s for dead).
Nev
Really good and attentive service. Love the food and simple setting :) My first time trying seafood curry. I really like their soft shell crab roll too. We will definitely come back.
Mazcalling
I don’t have a lot of experience with Japanese cuisine but this was nice and luckily for me the menu had pictures so for the uninitiated this was helpful. Food was well presented and tasted fine. Staff were friendly and attentive.
AaronN
We found the food here a bit average. Whilst the service was friendly, we found the gyoza skin a bit thick, and the pork katsu very dry and bland. We also ate outside which was very awkward given they are located right next to a TAB which had lots of weird bozo gamblers out front
Melinda
We love Matsuya
We come here every Monday night ... we have for the past 8 years .. ( it's a 45 minute drive one way ) The food is always fresh the staff always friendly and helpful.
We have tried many other Japanese restaurants around the Melbourne area and have NEVER found any to be as consistently good and well priced as Matsuya. It is also BYO.
Nick
Slightly dodgy decor for Japanese and you wouldn't expect to find such quality in Station Street. Japanese is either really good or poor, nothing in between. This is a winner. Place was packed the night we went.
Jess P
Pricey, but that being said, I haven't gone there for the full experience, just bits of meals here and there. I do like their table presentation and the staff were pretty ok. Just a lot of chatting in the kitchen. I don't think it's worth the hype.
*Maybe* I'll try the shabu shabu next time.
Ammy Elle
Came here on a late weekday night around 8pm. It was quiet so great atmosphere for a chat. We ordered sashimi and Shabu shabu. We thought it wasn't going to be enough so halfway through we ended up ordering a fried rice but be warned- the shabu shabu is actually more filling than it looks.

Overall, I enjoyed the meal however I didn't really like the interior of the place- it's not very inviting or interesting in its table arrangements. Reminds me a lot of a quick casual restaurant. Service and food was quite nice however so if you're not bothered by your surrounds go for it!
Jilly
This is simply the worst Japanese I had in Melbourne. Struggling to understand how any rating that greater than 1.0 achieved from other reviewers. The tariyaki tastes like Chinese stir fry. Sashimi was a disaster as all defrost from frozen fish, so was the eel..... understood there are limit choices of dining out options at Fairfield - but not a good enough excuse for such shithouse food....
Akkiandmalli
Great food that is very tasty with a wide range of dishes with a good size portions. excellent service which is quick and polite. friendly to kids and not worried when kids spill drinks 😁
Melissa Vollebergh
Very concerned about the number of "trainees" who did not speak English and just delivered food and cleared tables. Very slow to take order and our food came out at vastly different times. One entree came out after several mains. food was good and prices very reasonable. not a good choice for a family celebration..
Ramon Bowman
We're always drawn back to this Japanese restaurant for it's quality of dishes. Well presented, great proportions and value for money. Would especially recommend the Sushi Boat Deluxe!!
Erin Wilson
Expect top quality Japanese food when you come here. Each time I leave Matsuya I feel satisfied and eager to go back. Staff are always very friendly and we've never had a problem with customer service. In fact, I visited here 2 years ago for my birthday with my entire family including my baby cousin, the waitress was so sweet and caring she was asked to hold my cousin for a few minutes and show her the decoration in the window which we thought was kind (and of course let the waitress have a hold of the baby!).
I would highly recommend the Chiba set if you are looking for a taste of everything, however I'm sure you will enjoy anything ordered off the menu. Even the most pickiest of eaters will find something they like. The prices really do reflect what you will get, a great meal and a full stomach. There are some Japanese drinks on the menu which is excellent if you are feeling adventurous and want to further authenticate your meal!
While the atmosphere in the restaurant can feel closed in and loud during peak times, I wouldn't have it any other way. However, the restaurant is great to visit during quieter times.
Try Matsuya at least once, I don't trust any other Japanese restaurant and you won't be let down!
Carli
I love you matsuya. Consistently amazing service, and more importantly consistently FRESH SASHIMI every single time. Matsuya is an all time favourite resturaunt of mine, my friends, and my family. Even my dad who is the fussiest sashimi eater I have ever encountered. Reasonable prices, fantastic portions, perfectly prepared food, and friendly staff. My mouth is watering just writing about it! Thank you matsuya for many years of happy memories, and delicious lunches and dinners. I cannot praise this resturaunt enough. It is no surprise that matsuya has been around for many years.
Age'n'Tise
This place never fails to deliver. Great service, great food, great price, great vibe.
You can BYO alcohol which we always do with $2.50 corkage fee per person. Love this place 🍤🍣
Ket
Customer service was top notch! Catered to us well and was happy to cook our hot pot meat medium. Food was alright! The salmon and avocado Aburi roll was very flavourful and looked very appetising. The hot pot was okay.... broth was super sweet but was balanced out with the egg.
Nick X Thomson
Food was good but not amazing as I'd been led to believe by a few word of mouth reviews. The vibe and feel of the establishment was that of your eat-for-cheap restaurant, but the prices didn't quite reflect that, so I was a little underwhelmed by the experience on the whole, for an eatery that had been talked up by so many peers.
Gotham
For a suburban Japanese restaurant, the standard of food was very high, although to be fair that is reflected in the cost, which sits above all other Japanese places in the area. I'd happily come back again, although with the pricing it places it in a slightly awkward position in my opinion - too expensive for a causal 'pop out for dinner' / 'takeaway' and not quite there decor/atmosphere-wise for a 'special' dinner.
Moon
it’s really a bad and deceitful shop. i brought a lunch from their shop ,its $10.80 shown on the manu, but they charge me $13.80 . i found it and call them back.they said after lunch time would charge more money. they dont show this notice on the manu and dont tell me this before i do the order, this is really unbelievable . ...i would never go there again eithet.
Sotasty
Almost a full restaurant on a Monday night for good reason! Very nice Sashimi and generous servings. Well priced as well. Miso soup was a bit oily I thought. Great service and friendly staff.
Jacob
Happy with my recent experience here. Nice decor, the restaurant is clean and the service is great. Extensive menu with plenty of options. I had the Bento - the stand out being the chicken teriyaki, which I thought was awesome. My favourite Japanese restaurant in the area.
Rebecca Li
very good👍👍👍 the fish is so tasty, and the service is good. Must come back. I really like the fish neck and the salmon. The salmon is fresh and so tasty, even the ox tongue is amazing not too oily. The staff is very nice. The place is always busy,.
Alice Gomez
Ate here last week, and was very impressed. Really prefer this as a local option over the Japanese restaurants in Ivanhoe. Everything was delicious, with the soft shell crab sushi a standout. Service was attentive, quick and friendly, and food arrived fairly fast even though the place was full. Not the cheapest meal out, but I find that's pretty usual for Japanese cuisine. Looking forward to coming back!
Hao Wang
Had shabu-shabu today at this place and was really impressed with their sushi and entrees. Good service, Shabu-shabu was also very tasty and hearty, and the broth was very clear. Definately coming back to try the sukiyaki soon.
Yummymummy
Best Japanese in the north-eastern suburbs. Have been going for years and never been disappointed. Food is fresh and the staff are friendly and accommodating. Recommend this place with no hesitation.
Mr Robert
Excellent. Mother's Day was exceptionally busy. We had the 5.30 to 7.30 session which is plenty of time. Service was spot on and food, as always was excellent.
Morris
Very Corteous service, Pleasantly decorated, Lovely food. Table water served immediately. The Comp. side salad had a wonderfull dressing. Ordered the bento box and deluxe bento box. The Churning hot miso Soup came out at the same time as the boxes. Tempura items were perfect. The meals were very well presented, and the ingrediants were lovely .Complimentary Fruit pieces at the end of service.
KMontana
Love this place! Good value and food is always amazing! I've been here a couple times and have never been disappointed. Definitely a must try!
Danielle
Amazing Japanese! This place is always busy no matter what day of the week it is. Gyozas are delicious and the chicken katsu don is delicious. Sushi is possibly the best I've ever had. Staff and friendly and efficient. Would recommend and return.
Big Eyes For A Big Tummy
Good value Japanese restaurant. We ordered for entree the gyoza and the beef tataki which was probably the best part of our meal. Gyozas were tasty, not too oily and just the right texture. The beef tataki was quite a generous serving compared to most places for a normally priced appetiser/entree. Our main dishes of unagi and sukiyaki don were just ok - unagi burnt, hard and inedible on the outside, the beef chewy from being overcooked. I had low expectations for this restaurant given it was another Chinese-run Japanese restaurant but was pleasantly surprised by the entrees and general pricing for sizing. A good go-to restaurant in the neighbourhood (will have to try their sushi and sashimi next). Staff needs more training though (served by a girl who had no idea what she was doing with poor English - I observed another table of pax animatedly using their hands and cutlery to explain their reasoning for requesting serving cutlery to avoid double dipping with their sharing dishes)
Andrew Dodds
When I think of Fairfield, I think of dinner at Matsuya. Exceptional service and quality food. I've never ordered take-away from there, as I've always actually wanted to go and enjoy the restaurant experience that they provide.
I always order the miso soup, and rate it as high as any miso soup in Melbourne. Strangely enough, in my job as a Social Worker, I would believe that the best miso soup is served at the Sushi Shuji at the Royal Children's Hospital, however Matsuya runs a close second.
Matsuya's Sushi Chef is phenomenal and I love watching them work when I go up to pay the bill.
Yesterday I ordered the King Prawn Hot Pot, which was lovely. I particularly loved the tofu and the seafood broth. I also ordered a small bottle of the house saki. It was delightful.
Having the saki made me realise that I would love to go for a banquet there, as I believe that having a bottle of saki slowly with friends over the course of a couple of courses would be a highly enjoyable experience.

I'm a local and I just picked up some lunch time nori rolls with raw salmon and they were so disgusting i had to throw them away. I was given the scraps of the salmon that was browned and grissly, the rolls looked like they were rolled by an amateur and there wasn't any mayonnaise in them . They were awful. One time about a year ago i got food poisoning from chicken that was spoiled. I should not have gone back there again. I certainly won't buy food from there again.
Happy
Great place to eat . You know what your getting every time . Great food with good service which makes it the place to eat on station street. Been coming here for a long time . Love your work.
Foodnique
Many many years ago, when i first came here i wasn't overly impressed with the food, only because i'd had preference and experience with other places. The service was good however.
Over the years we'd eat here regularly and i got used to the level of food they served here. I had my favourites, the Katsu-Don, Tempura and some other dishes. They make great Chicken 'special' dish which is great, it's a crispy chicken with mayo, nice wasabi like mustard and salad.
They updated the decor, but the service started to drop in standard a bit. My biggest gripe is that no matter what you order, and no matter if they ask you if want particular dishes out first or all together....they seem to bring one dish out at a time sometimes, 1 main, then 10 mins later the entree!, then the other persons dish 20 mins later, i once waited 30+ minutes for my dish (they got it wrong too) while everyone else had finished theirs. This they need to get sorted out with the wait staff and the kitchen.
Sharyn Honey
Pretty average Western style Japanese, but fine for a quick night out with the family (not really a place for a date if you want something special). Service very friendly though.
Nick The Greek
Great local Japanese food ....one of the busiest on Station Street , always packed. Great options on the menu and pricing is reasonable. If you want platters for home they can cater for that as well.
Cinzo
It's very friendly western Japanese food, now that's not a bad thing. The bento is as good as most Japanese places. Something different for the area.
Katie Wilkinson
Matsuya's Japanese food is one of the best I've tried. I go here often and I love their seafood fried rice, sashimi boat and spicy salmon rolls. I go here often and every time I do they never fail to please. Definitely recommend!
Shell Likes Good Food
Have been coming here for take away for a few years now and recently the food is just terrible. The meat is chewy and dry and quality is just not there. Very disappointing but with so many other eateries in the street I am taking my business elsewhere.
Jake
Love the food here. Had the bento box and the sushi platter last night and it did not disappoint! Take-away or eat in the food is always good! Pretty busy place in Fairfield.
Kellyw2200
OUTSTANDING AND PERFECT. By far, my favourite restaurant on the block. Affordable, clean, healthy and fresh. I couldn't see any flaws. Maybe every odd time, the meat might be a little old or have some undercooked peas. But other than that, I LOVE MATSUYA. we come at least once a week for good sushi and the FRIED RICE IS OUR FAVOURITE. Highly recommend
Andrew I Love Food But It Makes Me Fat
Deteriorated. Used to be really good but tonight I had osimono soup with slices of button mushrooms floating in it. Shitake mushrooms aren't rare any more. Thus is just cheap. And the chicken and other things in it were tough. I had the combination sushi sashimi called Moriwasi which looked great in its sushi boat but very disappointing. Substandard preparation. Much of the sashimi was just chunks of tough raw fish up to half an inch think instead of the usual slices. Looked like it had been butchered, not carefully prepared by a sushi chef. Honestly I've had better at shopping plazas.
Stellavision
Not worth it.. Went here the other night, had low expectations and was still disappointed. Ambience was bad, food below average, and service was kinda WTF. It went from being a forgettable dinner to insulting when they explicitly asked for a tip at the end! I mean, really?! You've got to be joking! High Street Northcote is a 5 minute drive (10 minute bike ride), where there Are several restaurants serving beautiful ramen, sashimi, sushi - much better value!
Raea
Worst experience ever. Food.... Worst experience ever.
Food is Underwhelming.
Staff are a bunch of weirdos & hang around your unfinished dishes like vultures (let people finish eating first)!
They don't accept eftpos but you can pay with credit card on an eftpos terminal? Go figure.
Will not return & will tell friends not to eat there.
Budf0126
Great food. Love the tempura! And the Daifuku is one of my favorite sweets. Overall experience is great. Well come back again!
Allan Davis
WOW. This place is awesome. Most authentic Japanese I've ever had. The Gyoza are 'to die for' and the Deluxe Boat is an expeience that must be enjoyed at least once in your life!
Olivia Grace
Surprised by the giant Sushi Boat. My partner and I went here wanting to try several different types of sushi. We were very surprised when a giant boat came out filled with mouth watering treats. I have also tried a hot plate which was also lovely. Would highly recommend.
Lulu-bobbles
My partner and I had a fantastic meal here last night. We live in the area, and have visited a few times before, trying the tempura and ramen dishes, last night we returned for one of their set 7course dinners and the good was amazing!! Such good value for money and the staff were on fab form too. Will definitely be back!
@qqHsiao
Sorry, i had better with this price!. The beef Don I had.
that beef was a cheap cut.
and a bad cheap cut.

there was a taste I know for sure it's when butcher didn't let the blood completely
which still can be saved by cooking and marinating

nope they put something to soften it and that's it

white fish sushi
not even sized right

fresh clams sushi...
u got to be farking with me

will give it another chance one day
but now I need good food
to get rid of this dissapointing out of my mouth
Arderelmusic
Nope. Seriously disappointing :( I've had better food at a $5 bubble tea place. Won't be coming back.
Angeline
Food is great and value for money. Sashimi Toru for below $20 a plate...yummy!
Claudia Buttazzoni
Disgusting! I've been coming here for years and have watched them go from A+ Japanese to cold food, bad service and stale ice cream. My curry was cold in the middle tonight. When I mentioned it I was given serious attitude. Finally the food was taken away and returned a 'fresh batch'.... Funnily the piece of cold potato I had bitten was sitting in the centre if my plate.... Still cold. Clearly my dish had been microwaved. For desert we ordered what we remembered to be the delicious creamy green tea ice cream. What we go instead was a stale, icey, clearly ore scooped and frozen ball of disgusting furry crap!! We sent it back and they returned with a slightly less but still icey, fury, gross ball of yuck.

Will not be returning!!
YumorNone
I love Gyoza and this one is no exception, been here three times in three months, sashimi and sushi is beautiful everything I've eaten here is!
Service is also great and very efficient .
I will be back until I've tried the whole menu. Fantastic food!
Smiles
Terrible. Like food court Japanese. Be okay for lunch I guess, but very disappointed in the meals. One meal was so bad couldn't eat it, at least they took that off the bill. Basic Japanese, average service, not a great vibe/atmosphere...would not return.
I Love Food.com
Best sushi ever if you like sushi great food over all I give a 9/10
Tim
Great without being spectacular. Great food at reasonable prices. Nothing spectacular, but a solid performance - I'll be back.
Mattmat14
Love it. Best in Fairfield. We now go too often. Just love it. Delicious. Always hope the free appetizer is the crab. Usually order the special sushi boat....simple!
Green Apple
Had the chef's bento. Quick to be served and everything in the bento was a delight. The sashimi was fresh, fried oyster was awesome!! Restaurant qS v crowded even on a week night, luckily I make my reservation. Highly recommended comparing to the standard of bento I've had in Japan
Dane
5/5! Matsuya always delivers great food, time after time. Curries are the best I've had, udon noodle soups are also the best I've had. Cheap but quality food!
John Smith
A favourite of ours. Matsuya is a regular destination for us and always the first choice of our son who loves to sushi and gyoza. For a special occasion we get the sushi boat. We've been going there for years and I don't recall ever leaving disappointed.
Jess36
Love the tempura and the vegetable curry rice! Always consistent here and a great takeaway option too
Food Glorious Food
Quick and tasty food. Have been here heaps of times over the years and never had a bad experience. The food arrives quickly and is always tasty. Family friendly restaurant.
Good Food Chaser
Just not Japanese enough!. I understand the other reviewer's lament regarding "pretend Japanese". There should be a restriction regarding restaurants' classification. Maybe just say "Asian" rather than "Japanese" so people are not misguided. The people who work here including the chef are Chinese, confirmed by a staff member. Actually, it was not necessary to ask because their food does not taste Japanese.

I wonder about the rating though!

I've been to Matsuya a couple of times and every time my experience has been great. Service is great and prices are not too bad either. Highly recommend the seafood ramen or sashimi!
