This place is very popular at lunch and the one guy was constantly on the phone, so service could be slow but the food was great value. The kebabs had great tender meat plus a lot of salad and pickles and bread, although I preferred the similar Afghan kebabs I had recently as they were spiced more. The lamb in a pile of rice was wonderfully tender and came with a separate tasty bean stew, so I'd say even better value than the kebabs, although either dish makes for a huge meal.

Hassan Mahady opened Al Dhiaffah Al Iraqi in Fairfield in 1997, and back then, it may well have been Sydney’s first Iraqi restaurant. Two decades later, this modest restaurant is still serving up Iraqi food to Sydneysiders. Though the ensuing years have seen a few more Sydney-based Iraqi restaurants pop up, including Fairfield neighbour Kebab Abu Ali.We’re greeted warmly, and ushered into a table of our choice that is surrounded by high-backed chairs. The walls are covered with fading monochrome images of old Iraq, which make a nice change from colour-saturated images of the Iraqi Civil War and ISIS that grace our television screens. We help ourselves to...

I have been long waiting to get my hands on proper Iraqi food especially the mazgouf. I have heard from Iraqi people. It's known to be the most famous Iraqi dish.

Mazgouf, is a fish dish made of carp from the Tigris River in Iraq. The carp is cut open and lightly smoked over charcoal fire. We got a taste of this with solid grilled barramundi fish cooked just the way it should be on open fire. You could feel it with the unique smell of the coal that gets into it. With raw chilli, lettuce and cucumber dipped in vinegar with onion salad on the side. It came with the oval bread baked in tandoor (Cylindrical Oven ) which I can't really differentiate from afghani roti regardless was a good treat for the taste buds. We also had an okra soup as a starter which is not worth a mention.

The restaurant is a little cozy old school type filled with Iraqi city portraits, the staff is friendly, the customers around mostly seemed like full timers there which proves my point.

The price Is very cheap for the quality of food on offer. It's definitely worth every cent.

Sydney's oldest Iraqi feed, decades on, and still pumping strong. Don't be intimidated, the menu is compact and pretty accessible. Ease yourself in with a mixed plate that comes with atomic green red radish and green pickles, wrap them in house made flat bread.
Stretch yourself a little with a gigantic lamb stew with hearty flat bread soaked in.

We were a group of four having lunch on a Saturday. The service was very good even though it was very busy at a certain point with full tables and people coming to pick up fresh bread and food. Staff quickly told us we would have enough with 2 plates, so we ordered a kebab combination, the roasted fill in lamb with fasolina, a salad and the yoghurt shakes. Fresh bread is also served hot and freshly made as soon as you arrive. Everything was absolutely delicious. We were very happy and satisfied. The food is fantastic value for money and I would definitely recommend and come back again in the future!

The Iraqi diet is quiet meat heavy given their arid landscape is not the best for growing vegetables – but the vegetarian in our group seems to find herself a hearty feast amongst the meat. Behold chicken + lamb kebabs, lamb kibbeh, lamb shanks with noodles, pickled carrots and something mysterious we think is a cucumber of sorts, soups, salads, stew, luscious thick hummus and Iraqi bread still warm from the oven.

It is 7pm on a Friday night and the place is deserted but for a lone diner. Iraqis must eat at 5.30pm. We order blindly, wondering what "fill in lamb" and "bread/curry stew" will bring. The food comes out quickly and in rapid succession.

...one look at Al-Diaffah Al-Iraqi and we know we're in for something good. It's a your basic hole-in-the-wall and it's busy. The waiter blokes are friendly and accustomed to serving non-regulars, it's an easy place to eat.

Unique Iraqi. Dinner was delicious in Fairfield at Al-Dhiaffah Al-Iraqi Restaurant, allegedly the only Iraqi restaurant in Sydney.

We ordered two dishes only:

Beef (or was it lamb) kebab, which was well cooked, thanks to the thickness of it, the centre was still juicy and very tender. The salad garnish and additional complimentary pickles and salad help cut the protein.

Also lots of protein was the lamb stew, with Iraqi bread soaked into it.

And of course the Iraqi bread which, as far as my limited knowledge can tell is like Lebanese bread but fluffier. Delicious!

If you were to go downtown Baghdad for a quick big meal, this is what you would get. Qouzi with bamya and fresh Iraqi bread.. You can't go wrong.
