Review Bon Ap' Petit Bistro - Fitzroy

Matthew Aitken
My partner wanted to experience French cuisine without leaving Melbourne and came across Bon Ap' online. Upon entry the ground level bistro was bustling with patrons enjoying and bar and dining area. We were greeted by wait staff and directed upstairs, which was like entering a new world. Our own quiet section of the restaurant, beautifully decorated and ambient. Our waitress was polite and prompt, love the French accent which gives you the experience of being in France itself. We were offered drinks quickly and ordered food soon after. Beautiful cuisine and experience, definitely a must try if you're in the area.

Love this little provincial French bistro. A regular repeat for us. Great ambience, food, drink & personalised hospitality by Marco & also Alan for his attentiveness at dinner last night. Happy Bastille Day. đŸ‡«đŸ‡· Simon & T

Tried out proper French for my birthday and i will definitely be coming back for more! I was greeted (and wished happy birthday) upon my arrival - which goes to show the staff’s attention to detail! Have booked birthday lunches / dinners in the past at other places which received no acknowledgement. We went with the 2 course meal in the end as it worked out better for us (plus there wasn’t many desserts to choose from), $50 per person was so worth as we got to choose from the wonderful and diverse selection of Entrees and Mains. We were served some complimentary bread with our entrees, which were a little too hard for my liking. The marinated octopus was so incredibly tender, and it was marinated with olives, potato slices and dried tomatoes which all complimented each other great. I used my bread to soak up the very tasty oil that was at the bottom of my bowl. The salmon was amazing! Thick cuts, amazing texture and very generous portions. The cheese cream paired so well with the salmon, the fresh salad gave each mouthful great zing from the lemon vinaigrette. Ordered our steak rare and it did not disappoint, the mushroom sauce was so tasty! I love how thick the cut of steak was, really helped preserve the juiciness and flavour. The french fries were the best fries i’ve ever had. So extremely crunchy and tasty. It was my first time trying Beef Tartare, was a little apprehensive and scared it would smel bad but I really enjoyed the condiments added to it and the egg yolk made it all so smooth and creamy. Definitely well executed and so easy to eat. The side of salad helped cleanse your palette. Fries again, we’re superb. We were thoroughly satisfied with our meal and cannot wait to come back to try other dishes! 📾 POULPE & POMMES A L’HUILE SAFFRANEE (Marinated Octopus), SAUMON EN GRAVLAX (Salmon Gravlax), STEAK TARTARE AUX COUTEAU, STEAK AUX POIVRES 📾 Escargots, Ratatouille, POISSON DU JOUR (Fish of the Day), POULET PURÉE (sous-vide chicken), STEAK TARTARE AUX COUTEAU, STEAM AUX POIVRES, TARTE BOURDALOUE (poached pear tart), FONDANT CHOCOLAT NOIR & PRALIN

first time going with my friends, love the atmosphere and decoration straight-away when i step in, so vintage and so much characteristics. the food was fantastic, its flavourful and rich with well seasoning in all, it was a wonderful culinary experience every bite 😚 the pinot noir and merlot paired well with the food as well~ missed their dessert this time as the table was up to hand over 😣 save a bit of time to find parking around if you are going on the weekend.

Reasonable price point, delicious authentic food - moules normande was a crowd favourite, the mussels were perfectly cooked with a tasty umami sauce we loved to soak up with generous servings of bread; steak tartare was equally delicious & you can't go wrong with the escargots. We loved our experience here and would come back any day!

Oh my. This place is excellent. So authentic. I have had croque madames in France, but not as good as this one. On a cold day in Fitzroy, finding Bon ‘Ap was just what we needed. Small, warm, and welcoming. With food that is just so good. Highly recommended.

Oh my goodness, the food was amazing, the flavour was out of this world. It was tantilizing to the tastebuds, well done chef. As for the staff, they were brilliant, especially having to work New Year's Eve, I hope you finish early enough to enjoy the night. Escargot was brilliant, the steak cooked to perfection, the octopus was so tender, the muscles wow!!! And don't get me started on the creme brulee, it finished off the nights meal on a high. Thank you Bob Ap' Petit

Today we held a family birthday celebration in the courtyard at Bon Ap, for 35 people. We have long loved this little bit of authentic France in Fitzroy and today they did us proud with a superb menu and service to match. The food was generous and outstanding and above all, very authentic. We, and our guests had a wonderful day. Thank you.

We come here all the time and sit in the window watching all the Brunswick Street people doing their thing. The staff are wonderful and the wine list is fantastic and well priced. The food we have had has been delicious and they give you free cheese with any wine purchase in happy hour. We have spent many a happy hour in here :)

I went last night with 3 friends and we loved the place. The backyard is lovely! Service was great and the food really good. We ordered a few different things and shared all the plates. French rosé was perfect and the bread...oh so good, as a French person, I can say it is one of the best place for bread in Melbourne! We will definitely come back!

Being honest my first experience with the restaurant was pretty bad - enough for me to leave the bad review. Bon Ap reacted in a way that should be a benchmark for customer service - added suggested changes (such as serving mussels with bread), apologized for slow service and wrong pricing of the steak and invited to give the restaurant another chance. So I went there again - totally different experience, beautiful food, nice atmosphere. Definitely will go there again and highly recommend!

If you want classic French Bistro food, with excellent service at a very very good price...then Bon Ap' is where you'll find me. Simply a fantastic atmosphere with finger lickingly yummy food, served by wonderfully attentive and down to earth staff. 5 Stars!

Excellent petit bistro francais bonne ambiance and nourriture authentique. Bravo a toute l'equipe. Excellent place if you want to eat authentic french food. Well done to the all team. Really good job indeed.

Charming French style bistro, wine bar. Lovely food, pleasant service in a Parisian ambience.

One of the best in Melbourne great food exceptional service fabulous atmosphere recommend for everyone ïżœ

Nice french cafe with relaxed atmosphere and generous portions. The 3 course meal was $45 (+$2 for beef mains). Every dish was delicious, the desserts were a highlight.

Love the steak which was cooked to my preference-medium rare and with generous portion. I ordered the $40 3-course set meal which I think it’s a good deal. The tartine was a bit too sweet otherwise would have been near perfect French lunch for a Sunday.
Aaditey Bains
Excellent lunch here. We had the steak sandwich and fish of the day. The fish was barramundi and cooked perfectly with zucchini. The rump baguette was nicely done. Meat was tender and the sauce and pickled veggies gave the sandwich a nice balance. Bill for 2 came to $31USD. The restaurant is beautiful and has both a private room upstairs and a courtyard. Service was very good.

Nice comfortable French.

Excellent French restaurant and reasonably priced. Menu offers dishes such as beef tartare, mussels, duck a l' orange and creme brulee. The sauce the mussels were cooked in was delicious soaked into bread.
Recommend.

I loved the beautiful food, great service and atmosphere. Goat’s cheese was excellent and drink menu was very interesting and satisfying!! Only the negative is unfortunately, half of our mussels were under cooked or unopened. However, I’ll definitely come back to tryout something different.

Chasing a coffee we stumbled across this place. So as you do in France we ate and drank.

Espresso Martini and Pint of 1664 went down a treat, cheese and salami was delish

Con- our food never arrived

Would recommend

We had been here for so many times. We love their wines, service and of course the dishes like beef taretare, French bread and mussels. The fish was quite salty and the sauce is a little bit overpowering the taste of fish. Overall, we have pleasant experience there.

My usual hang out when I feel like a nice relaxed lunch by myself. I enjoy the classical French and go for the lunch menu option with 3 courses for $40, a great meal and well timed at 11.30 (am an early starter so serves lunch nicely in time for me!). I have had the salad/soup (excellent!) fish of the day (beautifully freshly cooked), duck (was ok not great) and some great desserts here. Will definitely be back again during my lunch break. Just me and a great meal!
Food Comatose
Fabulous French food and wine served up by charming French wait staff. The cosy restaurant transports you to Paris, even though you remain in the heart of Fitzroy. I ordered a 3 course banquet with my French housemate (who also rates this place) and devoured the garlicky snails, mussels cooked in cider with a side of French fries and one of my favourite desserts—crĂȘpes suzette . Miam miam!
Eat Good Melbourne
We came to Bon Ap upon a friend’s recommendation to celebrate a birthday which called for a feast. We started off with broccoli croquettes (amazing- one of the best croquettes I’ve ever had), escargot (a little bland and could’ve done with a little more seasoning), chicken liver parfait (bread was great but parfait wasn’t to my liking) and beef tartare (loved it!). Mains were pork chops (delicious), mussels (so much garlic goodness!), gnocchi (cheesy and creamy) and barramundi (perfectly cooked). Onto dessert we had creme brĂ»lĂ©e (a little too eggy and grainy), crepe Suzette (delicious!), chocolate mousse (absolutely amazing! Highly recommend!) and apple crumble (yummy!). Overall a great meal and will definitely return. Highly recommend for date night!

as French as it should be when it comes to food.

As authentic as it can be ... venue, food, drinks and service.

There are lots of quirky "rustic" original designs within the building; bolts, nuts, steel staircase, nook, etc. etc. keep your eyes wondering ... but that's not why we are here ... French food ... latte was ordinary, but their sweets are way above average, as French as it should be when it comes to food.

Anyway, we must explore more ... JT-May 2019.

3.5
If you like a good french restaurant that offers good value for money, Bon Ap may not quite fit the bill.
Whilst the food quality and wines are OK, the dishes are somewhat on the smaller size.
Service was a little slow however it was packed full on the evening we were there.
We enjoyed the Courgette Farcies and the Snails as starters and the Gnocchi and the Mussels for mains.
Maybe worth another visit or maybe not.

We were wandering Brunswick Street and needed a coffee and loo stop so popped in here. Friendly French dude behind the bar explained the lunch menu started in half n hour at 11am. We slid into a cute little booth and rated the coffee really highly, so thought we’d stick around and try the lunch menu. It’s 2 courses for $32 or 3 courses for $39. I started with the duck parfait with salami and fresh bread and it was an A+ from me. For mains I had the mussels with a creamy cider sauce and this was another 10/10. The sauce was divine and I’ve been craving it lately so will need to make another trip back. My other half had the stuffed zucchini and the steak for mains, both of which were delicious, but she definitely had food envy. My two dishes were amazing. Can’t speak highly enough of this lunch experience!

Order the chef’s special. Asked the lady for a steak knife so I could finally cut it but I still couldn’t chew it. I gave up. Everything else was okay. Not amazing as 4.1. But since my main was a waste of time, money and mood, it’s a 1 for me.
ALM
The food was delicious,no doubt for good taste đŸ‘ŒđŸŒ
However we were disappointed by ordering the Feed me menu...It doesn’t worth it,when 3 people are hungry and want to try the best of a French restaurant ,we received multiple entrees, one medium plate of grilled seafood,ONE main dish to share between 3 of us(Pork),cheese board and ONE dessert..it was smart move to create something called Feed me menu and bring so many small dishes followed with unlimited number of bread baskets (which makes you full),of course you can’t complain by saying you stayed hungry, because you already ate so much bread, but at the same time for the value of almost $170 you rather go for main dish for each person,1-2 entrees to share and desserts.
Was very disappointed because we ended up not trying the best desserts or main dishes that restaurant actually has.

Feed Me Menu is NOT the best option to enjoy your dinner.
Sassyfoodqueen
I came here for Bastille day and it was one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had! $130 set menu drinks included and it was best value for money. I’ve never actually had drinks paired with food and it was such an amazing experience! It took my food experience to the next level! Unfortunately I don’t have any photos as I was scoffing my face the entire time! It was such a fun night and the food was cooked so incredibly well! I left feeling so happy and fulfilled with a smile on my face! Also the staff are so friendly and welcoming! I will be back!

Featured in Broadsheet.com.au as one of Melb’s Best French restaurant.

Indeed, Bon Ap is different to many French restaurants I visited and the dishes are simpler and little bland (less salty). I had the grilled options entree and fish of the day as main. Both looks lovely, just a little salt is needed. Hearty French dishes in a casual ambience, with friendly service.

Staff were very friendly, and the mousse and rice pudding were especially delicious. The escargot was made well too, and you couldn't taste much except for the garlic and herbs. A bit disappointed with the chicken dish though. Gnocchi, on the other hand, was amazing. If you're looking for good quality french food Bon Ap is definitely the place to go. The free bread was a nice little touch too.

The best dinner experience we have had in years. We couldn't rate Bon Ap' any higher. Having lived in France for a number of years, Bon Ap' is the most authentic Bistro experience we have had in Melbourne. The food and wine are sublime while reasonably priced. I don't think we have had better service at any restaurant in Melbourne, the staff were extremely friendly, attentive and down to earth. I highly recommend Bon Ap' if you are after an authentic french meal and great service in Melbourne.

Love the food here and super cute courtyard out the back. However the staff are the most unfriendly and rude bunch I have ever come across. I went a few times and thought it was just the lady with the dark hair (I assumed she was a manager) but since returning several times I have come to find it is ALL staff. They are incredibly rude and unfriendly and seem to hate their jobs. Seems every time I have been (upwards of 6 times) there they have been more interested in chatting with each other and other French speaking friends sitting at the bar. So disappointing because as I said the food is great.

Best example that simple done well beats any hipster joint. Not only is the ambience absolutely wonderful, the food is truly excellent. The chicken caesar salad was hands down one of the best salads I've ever had. The chicken was cooked to perfection and there was just the right amount of dressing. I don't normally like shoestring fries, but these guys do them so well I'd come back just for the fries! Everyone's food looked amazing so I'll definitely be back! It's the only place in Melbourne that actually knows how to properly season food. They have great wines, too, as well as regular fun events like beer and cheese pairings. Wonderful experience.

I Came here with a group of friends for dinner. Service and environment was lovely.

Excellent wine menu, and a basic (yet very good) selection of sharing, small and large plates. We tried nearly everything on the menu and it was all quite nice. Averaged around $70pp which is reasonable.

Standout dishes: ratatouille, 7 hr lamb & the dessert of the day (poached, stuffed pear with a crumble and chocolate hot sauce).

Standout charcuteries: Terrine de jambonneau & saucisson sec.

Having walked past many times. I was glad my friends suggested this wonderful place. The menu is strong as is the wine list. Service was prompt even though we where in an time restriction we never felt rushed. Thank you

Great place for brunch and a coffee! Very friendly staff and a nice cafe perfect for dates or solo meals. Would definitely recommend the oeuves a la coque with mushroom sausage. Prepare your taste buds.

Brilliant service and the food is outstanding. I had my birthday here in there upstairs dining room and you couldn't fault it, they are so accommodating to anything you need.

We came here upon recommendation of a friend. The dishes we ordered were pretty average. The steak tartare was quite plain and nothing stands out from the dish. The pickled onions are refreshing after you take bites of meat. The waffles are soft but overall nothing special about the dishes.
This place is great. A quaint unassuming buzzy little restaurant in Fitzroy. Some of the best steak we've had. Staff were very pleasant, ambiance was gorgeous. We had a number of starters-white anchovies- yum, croquettes with truffle butter - ooooh yum, mushroom sausage-a bit weird; brother in law had the escargot and was suitably happy, sister in law had fish of the day which was swordfish with parsnip purée and broccolini and raved about it. As I said,we shared the steak -one of the better steaks I've had -perfectly cooked and sooooo tasty (slightly ruined by the roast potatoes which didn't do the meal justice-and frittes as well as the profiteroles and creme brûlée. All of the food was excellent quality. Wine was great, staff were fun. Overall definitely go back!

My boyfriend and I were here a week ago. We both had the chicken leg and agreed that it was very bland, seemed to have no seasoning at all. I loved the ratatouille though. The staff seemed really lovely and helpful though.
Francesco Pulice
Beautiful relaxed atmosphere.
Nice coffee, probably the best mocha that I tried since when I arrived in Melbourne; and really good food, the waffle with bacon and eggs was special.
Pablo
Soooo good. Highly recommended! Good food, wine and atmosphere. Attentive staff and flavoursome food. Try the lamb and the chicken, amazing! Also good wine selection
Scott Anderson
Had the Escargot, the steak tartare and the duck. Food was excellent quality. Reasonable pricing. If I had to pick on something, perhaps the Escargot could have had a bit more seasoning but it was very good. Service and atmosphere was excellent. Perfect for a special night out.

This is my third visit--twice for lunch and once for dinner. I LOVE the lunch offerings! The continental breakfast was so much food and a great value--the fresh squeezed OJ was so amazing we ordered more. The beef stew was succulent, and the ratatouille crepes were incredible. And OMG--the mulled wine! The service and atmosphere makes you feel like you're in Europe, and service is friendly. Great place for a girls lunch.

Me and my friend just walked in here without any plan. As there were no seat we were arranged to the backyard. I have to say that sometimes no plan is the best plan. I like the layout there. And the food is better than other French restaurant as they are not that salty. Four of us were there and ordered one bottle of wine. We spent $55 per person that night which is not that expensive for French food and the service are good.

Issy
Wonderful wine bar/Bistro. Gorgeous authentic French food, lovely staff, great vibe! I had dinner with a friend and we were both very impressed!
Highly recommend!

Absolutelt amazing food, service and quality. Portions of food are normal with an excellent price for its' quality of food. We ordered the Waffles with bacon steak and the quiche, both highly recommended!!!

Very cute French bistro. Food is typical simple and very tasty French brasserie fare. You can tell the chefs' work behind it. Loved the cheese too. Will definitely be back.

Magnifique ! A delicious slice of France in Fitzroy! The wines are reasonably priced and the endless supply of bread is typical of French restaurants in France. I don't review often but this place is worthy of 140 characters

Had lunch in the little courtyard and it was really nice.
Had a steak tartare and it was really really good and the croque madam was nice too.
Julia Richey-Stanley
I love this place! My mom and I have been twice and it does not disappoint. Only place I know of where you can get mulled wine. The mains excellent - rich, saucy, meat that falls off the bone. The Ratatouille is served with goat curd and toasted bread and is TO DIE FOR. Also they have a sandwich which has salsa verde, marinated capsicum, goat cheese, and some sort of green leafy veg (can't remember, probably Rocket) which I have since been replicating for lunches. This restaurant is only a year old, and I hope they get tons of business because I never want them to close down! Also a plus: the atmosphere is dreamy and cozy. Go here - you will have a lovely time.

My boyfriend and I weren't feeling so hungry today so we came here for a small bite. We had soup of the day, ham hock terrine, chocolate croissant and of course crÚme brûlée. The soup was quite bland, but we enjoyed the ham. The croissant was not that special, just standard. I do very much enjoy the lovely crÚme brûlée. The waiting time between dishes was a bit long but the staff were very friendly and helpful.

goof authentic french food, the restaurant is full with good vibe and friendly service. It is like an express trip to France. dish that u must order is the escargot (french snail) and Croque Monsieur

Lovely french eatery! Homemade ice tea is delicious and had their divine mushroom with blue cheese quiche special with salad. Nice atmosphere for a couple of friends catching up taking our leisurely time eating, drinking and being merry. Good service too.

By chance we came upon Bon Ap' late last night (around 10pm) and sheepishly enquired if we might be able to grab a bite to eat? "Of course" was the warm reply. As it was relatively late we opted for some smaller shareable plates of sardines, stuffed zucchini flowers, escargot and saucisson. All were delicious. We topped this off with a couple of beautiful wines by the glass and a tarte tatin which was magnifique! What impressed us most was the friendly, attentive and unpretentious service. Thank God for the French!
Petit Gastounet
Great little bistro with an authentic French vibe. A little noisy but that added to the vibe. Service attentive but not intrusive. Food was excellent with a lovely 'homieness' A small but select wine list made for easy selection. Two little quibbles...Bread wasn't placed on the table with the meal as it would in any restaurant in France. We had to ask for it. The bread that arrived was excellent 'Pain Rustique' but not enough for the delicious saucy meals we ordered - however more was bought to the table promptly upon request. Secondly the presentation of the dishes was visually pleasing. Our meals were served in mini cast iron 'cocottes'. We had chicken on the bone so it was difficult to use a knife & fork to eat it. In the end I gave up and used my hand despite the chicken being bathed in a gorgeous mushroom sauce. Messy but delicious!! Then came the problem of the sides of salad & vegetables. No clean side plates were offered so it made for an awkward situation to share the sides and you had to choose to put in in the cocotte or pass up all together. All in all an excellent 'French' dining experience but Bon Ap needs to rethink the food presentation to make it more enjoyable. Will definitely return!!

My partner and I have been going to this beautiful restaurant for months now. I hesitated to write a review after our first visit, because I wanted to make sure they were genuine and passionate about their enterprise - and they are. Not only genuine, but authentic, and true to their philosophy of great French comfort food. The service is friendly and very respectful. Damien and Françoise are delightful hosts, and they always compliment their guests with a welcoming smile on their faces. You feel like you are part of their family.
I have lived in France before and, of course, miss it every day. Bon Ap is the connection that leads me straight back to the French tradition in the cuisine. As avid cooks, my partner and I are very picky with food in general, and Bon Ap is one of the few restaurants in Melbourne that provides excellent food quality, not only through their superb recipes (simple and delicious), but also through their fresh ingredients. The wine list is simple and yet there is everything you need to complement your 'repas'. Damien is very knowledgeable and always goes the extra mile to make his customers satisfied. Françoise is a very sweet and efficient girl. Both are examples of how to run a business.
The decoration reminds me of a restaurant in a small French village, homy, inviting and comfortable. A true gem. We even have our 'own' table waiting for us every time we visit. We bring our books, and have a lovely brunch whenever possible. It is the perfect place to relax and unwind, and the best part, right in the heart of Melbourne.
They also have great special nights, bringing the best of what beautiful France has to offer. Cabarets, French music, French wine, desserts, etc. Always keep an eye for these specials, as they are super fun!
My partner and I would like to say a genuine thank you for all the special and good times spent at your wonderful bistro. Keep delighting us! :)
See you next Sunday (again!)
Andre and Brecon.

truly authentic french bistro in the middle of Fitzroy. Great service and quality offerings with enough noise to give it the authenticity of being transported to Paris. Had the entrecote steak and charcuterie plate. Good quality mostly french wine at reasonable prices.

Bon so is a cosy, authentic French bistro on Brunswick Street, that delivers high quality food and wine in an organised hustle and bustle atmosphere.
The two French guys know how to look after their customers which is something that can be sadly overlooked in the other 40 odd eateries here.
Maybe a French revival is on the horizon.
KT
Bon Ap’ is a little bistro, part restaurant, part bar, and part cafĂ©, easily located on Brunswick Street in the heart of Fitzroy. The interior is quite narrow, but gives off a warm and cozy feeling. The gentleman who worked the floor was very friendly and had a heavy french accent, which added to the atmosphere.

The decor looks quite messy, but more of an organised mess. It did give you something to look at while you waited for your meal.

The bistro was quiet this morning when I arrived, but picked up quite a bit while I was there. The staff were very friendly and the service was quick.

Check out the review of Bon Ap' in the blog post below.

Bon Ap' is in our neighbourhood so it was high time we gave it a go. I feel there has been a renaissance of French cuisine in Melbourne in the last 12 months from the casual (Bon Ap') to the unusual (Oter) to the old school classic (Phillipe). We arrived with no reservation on a Friday evening and were warmly welcomed and shown to a cosy table towards the back of the dining room next to the spiral staircase. It certainly has a French wine bar feel and I feel like I could be in Paris or on the set of Allo Allo!

The wait staff are very nice and friendly and the chefs really know what they are doing. This place has a very happy vibe. I love!!!!!!!!!

It's difficult to imagine anyone not enjoying the ambience of this wonderful French bistro in the heart of Fitzroy. Staff are knowledgable and helpful and only too eager to please without being servile.
Perfect for a post-work wine and snack, or a full meal, the quality of food and presentation is first rate.
This is a place you'll want to linger

Brilliant food and wine. The food is simple and impecabely prepared. The ratatouille and creme brulee are my favourite. Will visit again soon!

Excellent food, great atmosphere can't fault anything.
Wine list interesting and great waiter( the bold one) could talk about it.
Ask about the wheel

I went there last night with my husband and 2 young kids. We had a table in a very cosy little corner, it was beautifully decorated. We took the $45 formula x2, and there was so much food! Snack, entrée, fish, meat, cheese and dessert. What else can you ask for? The service was great and the food was delicious. Will definitely come back. Thanks again for a great night :-)

Aug' 16 update: Gave 4.5 last time because I thought it was a great experience with great service. Went back again and it was still good, but not às good. We were served by a French gentleman who was very charming. It was busy and 'gezellig' inside (sorry for the Dutch word, but English doesn't seem to have a word with the same meaning!). The menu had changed so there were a lot of new options. We had a croquette, which has cheese inside and wasn't great. Then we had a special charcuterie of pork neck, the meat was nice. We had sardines with spinach, pinenuts & romesco sauce and ratatouille & goat cheese “tartine”. Both were nice. As mains/larger plates we had poulet normand and boeuf bourguignon. The chicken was nice, the beef I didn't we didn't like that much. The portions are good. We were pretty full but went for a tarte tatin anyway. I can't remember how it was different last time, but I didn't find it very good this time. Too sweet. All and all still a great place, but I did change the score to a 4 which I find better suitable now.
June'16: Fairly new spot on Brunswick Street. Went here for dinner on a Tuesday with my boyfriend and one other friend. It was fairly busy, but it was no problem to get a table. The Colombian waitress was lovely and the boys loved looking at her and listening to her explaining the menu. It is comfortable and cosy inside. We took a carafe of wine which was easy drinking (don't know which wine it was). We had the croquettes of the day, which were cauliflower and delicious. Then we should have gotten the beef cheek marmelade tartine, but we never got it and only realised after we left :( We did get a selection of 3 charcuteries; salami, cured ham and duck confit. For mains we shared the coq au vin and the snapper en croute. We had fries and haricot verts as sides. All the food was beautiful. I didn't really like the 'croute' on the snapper, but the fish was beautifully cooked. We shared a delicious tarte tatin to finish off.Total cost was $166. Not bad considering the amount of food and wine we had for that. All and all the food was beautiful and we will be back!

A new arrival to the Brunswick St dining strip
(ex Red Rice site). Fabulous share plates; white anchovies a must, superb
wine selection, great ambience and decor, lovely personable staff
make this rustic but polished little French eatery a welcome addition to
Fitzroy. We will definitely be going back.

Great vibe in this place. Went for brekky and had one of the croques. The melted cheese on top was a highlight as well as the coffees! .

Night out with my dearest friend this evening at Bon Ap'. We were greeted by the lovely Sebastian, owner and foodie extraordinaire, who placed us at the bar for a glass of champagne prior to seating. We then commences the first of many courses with the white anchovies, duck confit and chicken liver parfait, unfortunately although absolutely delicious, we matched with the wrong French white wine, but much to Sebastian's credit, he swapped this for the most delicious of Beaujolais which took us through to the steak tartare and three delicious cheeses. We devoured ALL three deserts on menu which put us into a foodie sugar coma along with the sticky wine suggested by our generous host. 10 out of 10 for atmosphere and location. Food was beyond expectations and for 2 people who had traveled to France, was definitely on par with our authentic French experiences. Cannot wait to visit again. Love love love

What a great find

Great wines, great rustic French food and real service. Stumbled upon this place in their first week and surprised they have got it so right so early, can't wait to see them hit their straps.

Joie de Vivre

il est bon, en fait il est fantastique!

What a breathe of fresh air this is.

Great simple rustic food to nibble on whilst you work your way through the wine list.

The two French boys running the show are such a delight.

Cant wait to go back and do it all again

Merci!!

Great food, venue and excellent service.
From the moment you arrive you feel very welcome and friendly. Place looks wonderful, cosy and have a great vibe. Don't know much about French food but if that how it's taste I must say it's amazing. Service was exceptional and with a smile. Thanks guys for letting me find "my little Paris"

I discovered this place on Tuesday and have been there twice already!!! Everything is fantastic!! You get real French atmosphere, the food is delightful (sharing plates), the staff very attentive and helpful and you feel like you are living in France! I enjoyed two dinners with friends and each time we left the place so happy and... full!!!! Good choice of wine and cocktails, I enjoyed the coq au vin (slow cooked chicken in red wine), homemade duck rillettes, the best steak tartare in town, and the tarte tatin is the must! Can't wait to go back again and again.... Good job guys! I highly recommend the place
