Review Transformer Fitzroy - Fitzroy

Matthew Yong-O'Gorman
Being a carnivore myself I was incredibly skeptical of coming to a vegetarian/vegan restaurant. But the culinary adventure that the set menu took me on was a welcome surprise. An incredible mix of flavours that was well worth the upmarket price tag. A truly unique characteristic of the set menu was the contrast between cold/raw and warm/cooked. This accentuated the flavours incredibly well. Service and decor were excellent.

An experience like no other! My partner surprised me to a wonderful dining experience! We enjoying the tasting menu with such a variety of flavours. Each dish unique and full of flavour. The only feedback we had was that the sauce that accompanied the eggplant was not to our liking but we enjoyed the culinary journey

Expect an explosion of great food taste. What a great place for a special dinner. We had a ten course vegetarian dinner and every single dish was a dream. Not cheap but worth every single bite. Every dish was explained to us by the waitress or waiter and every dish was a surprise for our sense of taste. Thanks chef 👍We loved it and we will be back for sure.

I usually love going to vegan restaurants because they can't fall back on meat as the star of the dish. Each dish needs to be rich in plant-based flavours. Transformer is definitely an experience... The flavours are strange, punchy, and sometimes questionable. We had the smaller Feed Me menu for $64 per person. It was super filling. I was worried about portions when the finger food was coming out, but those were the only things that were small. The raw radishes with citrus butter were super strange... Not sure they have a place on a pricey menu. Miso glazed mushroom was a delightful one bite. Wish there was more of this one! Beetroot tartare was again, a little strange. Initial taste reminded me of a fruity vomit. I still ate every bite, as it went well with the cream and rice crackers. The chickpea panisse. There were WAY too many of these. The sprinkles of yeast on the outside make them super dry, so extremely hard to eat three per person. Not bad flavours at all, it just reminded me of eating dry weetbix as a kid. The stars of the night were definitely the mains. The salad was fantastic and well balanced, the potatoes were filling if not a little underwhelming, but the cabbage was so full of flavour and just perfectly balanced. Those pine mushrooms. Really fantastic. Not sure I would come back here to dine. The flavour combinations weren't super enjoyable. They left me going "That was interesting, but I never want to eat it again". If it was a bar, I'd probably come back for the drinks through. Would absolutely recommend the Watermelon & Habanero Sour Beer (if you like watermelon, give this a go even if you don't like beer), and the Peachy Momo (if you like yuzu). The staff were all super sweet. We did have an issue of being accidentally overcharged as we were paying the bill. They couldn't amend the charge on the spot, so we were told we'd receive a $110 refund in a day or two. Overall an interesting experience in a well decorated restaurant. I think I was expecting to be blown away by the food. I think they're on the right track, but the flavours just need a bit of work.

Excellent food for vegetarian people.. Specially Indians who are wanting to explore other vegetarian options than curry.. This is nice place.. And don't worry about menu.. As you get to test and eat every thing they have on menu... Eggplant abd cabbage is the best...

AMAZING. Atmosphere, lighting, energy. Service was excellent. Immaculate, really. Food was out of this world. Easily the best restaurant I’ve ever been to. 100% worth the price. OBSESSED with the memory of this place. Will definitely be returning.. but not before recommending to literally everyone - in Melbourne and beyond. Might I add - the cocktail menu is such a delight to the eyes. All exquisite and unique and very exciting. Overall, wonderful experience, deserving nothing less than five stars. Thank you team of Transformer!

Great service Got the feed me more tasting menu and I was bloody stuffed. Food was really great and had alot of complex flavours Enjoyed my time there

Excellent vibe, some really well done dishes, however if you happen to not like the featured vegetable in a dish it's pretty easy for them to miss the mark .

The food was very good. Over all we were disappointed by the service. We had what we believed to be degustation however we got a second dish served while we were still eating this happened twice. We felt rushed to finish the dish we were eating before the other got cold. The wait staff were rushed when they delivered the food and didn't explain enough about each dish,I think this really let the experience down.

One of THE best dining experiences my husband and I have ever had (and we've had our fair share of dining experiences). From the moment we walked in, we enjoyed every moment. From the great decor to the friendly and knowledgeable wait staff to the unbelievably well presented and to-die-for food! HIGHLY recommend the degustation type food experience. 5 mins into it, I was wondering when we'd be returning. We wanted to reset our stomachs so that we could try all the other food. For us, it wasn't just a night out or a dinner but a great experience.
Mish Marie
Great service and great food! Can’t recommend enough! A must for any foodie in Melbourne

Pleased to have been placed quickly without booking. Great menu, we made yummy choices and discussed the food with as fun as we ate surprising healthy dinner. The Shiraz neuveau (something like that 2016 I think) was excellent. Nice coffee to boot. Happy experience would like to book for the right occasion. $60 A head.

My friend and I loved the flavours. I would say down on value for money. But a big up on quality and wonderful tasting food. This is a good place to take a date, eat different tasting food or impress someone.
Jennifer Frahm
Wow! Outstanding food - exquisite flavours, the Feed Me banquet is MORE than enough and the price is really good compared to what you get else-where. Cannot wait to come again.
Vicki Boucher
Thanks to my dear friend for my birthday treat. I just loved the food here. The flavours were superb. We ordered 3 dishes between us and they were staggered in the delivery which was super as we were able to enjoy and savour the delicate tastes before moving onto the next whilst melding each we chose.
Matt James
Absolutely loved it. The feed me was more than enough food. Wish I had room for dessert. Will definitely be back.
Jenae Wendy Robinson
Loved it. My husband and I had dinner here for the first time as a married couple last week and he couldn't have picked a more beautiful venue. The food was far beyond our expectations and amazing customer service to complete.
Cassie Hardy
Really amazing cuisine, romantic atmosphere, a super special experience

First and last time there was not a fan at all Expensive and not good

Came here the other night with mum in February. First time being here although I know this place for ages haha. Everything was good. Friendly staff. People are crowded haha very popular place. Have to book before dining in. <br/><br/>Will come back again.

Been here a couple of times. Lovely to have a fine dining vegetarian option for special occasions. Food has always been great, but I feel it is rather overpriced considering there are many elements that don't meet the "fine dining" standard, such as the service (which is s bit up and down). While I am all for "relaxed fine dining" it should be the customers who are relaxed, not just the staff. If I was paying the prices you pay at their sister store, Veggi Bar, I'd give this place five stars. But $9 for a tiny ramekin of macadamia nuts (about 10 nuts) doesn't warrant that price tag.
Hye-Sang Shin
Wonderful food and impeccable service - even for non-vegetarians. Great variety, and very tasty without being cloying or rich.
ARMANEATS
Excellent vegan restaurant. Very unique range of vegan dishes which were simple yet innovative. Well done to the Transformer team for providing our family with vegan food that was scrumptious. Keep up the great work team!

We have been 4 times, and 3 were for special occasions for large groups. The vegan set menu is amazing. We have never been disappointed. The chickpea pansies is amazing always, the eggplant to die for. We have often taken meat eaters there and they cannot get over on how delicious it is. We keep spreading the word.

4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️<br/><br/>Firstly the venue is epic, with ivy growing all over the place. The food was all exceptional and although all veggie and vegan, even the hardcore meat lover will love every dish! The gnocchi and the chickpea bread were the stand out dishes! The only reason I didn’t go 5 star was that the rice was a tiny serve and cost over $20. Service wise, the waitress was lovely but everyone else was a little “too cool for school” but I guess it is in Fitzroy 🤷🏼‍♂️
Brogan Duyndam
The staff were super helpful and the food was delicious!! We’ll definitely be back!
Dani Boudville
A nice midweek dinner place with one of the most interesting veg/vegan menus I've seen. Try the panisse and potato gnocchi. The leek tarte is delicious although definitely a sharing dish as it is very rich. There was a little mouse behind my seat but I kind of expected that considering the building. There was also a hair in a serving of food. 3 stars, but the food is worth it.

We had an amazing dining experience here tonight. The ambience is beautiful. Staff are friendly and very attentive. We ordered the tofu taco, halloumi , gnocchi, eggplant, and orange polenta dessert. Everything was spectacular.
Daniel Hurley
Pretty underwhelmed by the feed me menu. My partner and I felt there wasnt much going on with the food, basically consisting of sides. Nothing to match its reputation. Some dips and bread, steamed broccolini tossed in butter with some daikon rounds, pretty boring to sit and munch on that. The eggplant dish had good flavors but again nothing impressive. The service was really nice. The ambience was a bit weird, very closed off and leaving you with wanting to see more. I would not go back. Thanks though.

Having been to Transformer once before I remembered it fondly. This time our table of 5 decided to do the feed me option. For $60 a head the food coming out was decidedly basic, one item was merely cos lettuce with chunks of avocado on top with some dressing. When two members of our party wanted to swap another dish coming out for something else the wait staff refused and said we should have expected this. Bad service & value this time unfortunately.

The place looks good but the food is very average. We ordered the feed me menu and i was very disappointed. The second dish - chickpea crackers was too salty. All the other food was very underwhelming.. one was a plate of broccolini which was quite bland. On top of the food, service was poor. Asking two wait staff for a drinks menu and then reminding them 10 minutes later to bring one just about summed it up. Absolutely not worth the price.
Max Loon
Had the feed me menu and was pleasantly surprised. As this was my first full on vegetarian meal in Melbourne, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Besides that, it was a good thing that I came on an empty stomach because the feed me menu was surprisingly quite filling. It came with 7 dishes (3 appetizers and 4 mains). Furthermore, the service for the night was good, but it did take a while before somebody attended to us and took our order which was a slight let down. Would definitely recommend the spiced carrot dip as an appetizer as well as the gnocchi for the main as they were both the highlights of our meal.

The place is really cute! I’ll give it that. We made a reservation and arrived on time but still had to wait in the side bar (which was a little dismal TBH). We had the Feed Me menu which was more than enough. Loved how inventive each dish was. It was my first fully vegetarian meal ever and was definitely an experience :) Worth a visit if it’s your thing but book in advance and be prepared to wait.

Oh my god. I saw a MOUSE running around the restaurant!!!! NOT OKAY!! I was dining at the restaurant with my partner last night, and as we were leaving I saw a mouse and told him, he then said that when I had got up to use the rest room earlier he had also seen one!!! Worst part is the staff would definitely have to be aware of this and have probably had to spend time picking up droppings and yet the are happily serving food potentially making people very sick! UNBELIEVABLE!! The food was very average anyway.
PositivelyDelicioUs
The fit out here is unique and gorgeous. They have managed to take and maintain the feeling of an open space and yet create comfortable nooks of privacy. The service I had experienced during my visit was very warm and simultaneously non-intrusive, optimal for a dinner after a long day. The food was creative and plated well. Nothing disappointed, rather it was all quite good. I didn’t particularly fall in love with anything however.
Precious Anand ( The Indie Foodie)
Such a refined fine dining experience! Each meal was decadent and the service was great! The vibe of the restaurant itself was so nice and chill. Would definitely come here again!

In the trendy suburb of Fitzroy there is an abundance of fantastic eateries, but Transformer has managed to gain a reputation as being one of the best. Specialising in vegan cuisine, the team here make plant based food that is more than just good for you, it's actually appetising. Being meat eaters, vegan food has to be top notch to even tempt us to change our minds; and at Transformer you don't even notice the lack of animal based product.<br/><br/>It is a huge, open space that is beautifully decorated; with tables for big groups and intimate dates alike. There is so much attention to detail which really adds to the dining experience. The drinks list is great, with some lovely wine choices and fabulous cocktails.<br/><br/>The food really shines here. We had lots of share plates which were all fresh, zesty and packed full of flavour. There is so much care in both the preparation and presentation of the dishes and we enjoyed every bite. I honestly didn't miss meat at all, and I feel encouraged to try more vegan options on a regular basis.<br/><br/>The service was friendly and fabulous, and even though it was extremely busy we were still well taken care of. Transformer is proof that vegan food in the right hands is a real contendor in the busy Melbourne food scene, and with it's hip vibe and great service, really deserves it's great reputation.

Mum and I had the ‘FEED ME’ seven course meal, seems expensive but it really is not when the high quality vegan/vegetarian food is presented in front of you. My favourite dish was the braised eggplant, vegan alternative to the smoked labneh is smoked cashew creme - too die for! 😋
Food Dine Roll
Who knows vegetarian can be so sexy and beautiful!<br/><br/>This place really delivered in all areas. The food was beautiful presented and made. the onion tart was AMAZING. I could eat 10 of them. King oyster was beautiful and cauliflower also super tasty. And ALL desserts were beautiful. But you just try the chocolate sorbet.<br/><br/>Beautiful cocktails and atmosphere both inside and the courtyard.<br/><br/>On top of all these, services were top notch. I have to give it to them for being really attentive and accommodating. My friend brought her kid who started to throw tantrum mid meal and none of the staffs were anything less than helpful, caring and understanding. Not every place will do that.<br/><br/>Go try now if you love vegetarian food!<br/><br/>It is an expensive dining that's for sure. For meat eater, I Kinda feel hungry afterwards.
Frances Mona
Very tasty meals, love the menu <br/>Cool fit out too and great drink list <br/>Negatives - wait staff not particularly interested or friendly and that it’s very very pricey for what it is I think -$29 for eggplant dish? Nonetheless..Would return

Terrible Mother's Day service. Waited for nearly an hour before dessert arrived. When asked what was taking so long, they said we had to wait along with everyone else who got there an hour after us because it was a set menu. Didn't offer us any extra drinks or anything else for free for having to wait, unlike other decent restaurants who own up to their mistakes. Vacuous waitress just stared at us as we left and host who saw us out had the nerve to ask if we wanted to leave a tip. Dessert was way too sweet on top of that. Always recommended this restaurant and will now stop doing so.
Stephanie
From the moment you enter, you are presented with top service from engaged and active staff. <br/>All the food was delicious - just that we were told what we ordered wouldn’t be enough, but ordering an extra plate as recommended turned out to be a bit too much. <br/>Love the mushrooms and cauliflower.
SuziEats
Yes yes and yes. The restaurant is impressive even before you walk in. It looks quite industrial however when you walk in there is lots of greenery sprouting around. We ordered lovely mocktails which were divine. And then proceeded to order quite a few dishes to share. Super delicious

It was a long drive to get here but absolutely worth every minute. The decor is modern, fresh, and comfortable. I love the mismatched crockery. The staff were attentive, friendly, and very knowledgeable. The food is outstanding!! Such incredible flavours and presentation. We shared the halloumi, cauliflower, eggplant, and oyster mushrooms. The smoked labneh (both the vegan and non-vegan versions) on the eggplant was incredible. Also shared all three desserts which were all so delicious. The chocolate sorbet was incredible, but i would advise sharing it as it is extremely rich. We had the cloak & dagger prosecco which was beautiful too. One of the best dining experiences i have had in a long time.

Very good classic vegetarian restaurant in Melbourne.<br/><br/>Braised eggplant one of the best dish have to try from this restaurant. The combination of spice and grezy eggplant wow.<br/><br/>Brocolini nice as a starter dish. Hallumi , buratha, beetroot and potato also the good dishes.<br/><br/>Can visit some time if you need a change in your regular food.
Brian Turner
Beautiful atmosphere and ambience. Chose the feed me menu which entailed a 7 course chef chosen vegan selection. Was expecting slightly more, for starters a tiny bowl of macadamias was considered a ‘course’ and for one of the courses we were given half of a Cos lettuce with some kind of mandarin juice dressing on top, considering I paid $59 for each person and half a Cos lettuce costs about $2 I was expecting a bit more bang for my buck. Highly disappointed, would not return
Carly P
food was amaaaaazing! All of the flavours of each dish worked so well together. They have a fig and blue cheese dish that they can do vegan and it actually comes with a vegan blue cheese which I’ve never come across! It was soooo good! the staff were lovely as well, great service and switched on. It’s really nice in the outdoor court yard area which I didn’t know existed until tonight! 😊 loved it!!! ❤️

One of the finest dining experiences I’ve ever had. Especially the ginger shot before the entree was a highlight! I highly recommend this place for an amazing vegan fine dining experience.
Niveditha Vathsangam (Niv)
A must for vegans! Their tofu taco and braised eggplant were the highlights of the menu. Rich flavour and quite a happy tummy-full. Went great with a side of the Goji Emoji ;)
Siddharth Sikand
It’s a pretty impressive modern deco setup. Although the food stands out in terms of presentation but lacks flavour. My wife’s a vegetarian and was really disappointed after reading so many great reviews.
Carly
FEED ME! That’s all you need to say and the lovely staff will delight you with a 7 course vegetarian (or vegan) meal. What a delight it was too. So full of flavour and creativity. Next time I’ll try to leave room for<br/>Dessert.
HelloPinapples Aregreat
We went to Transformer last night. I was super excited to try the place having been vegan for the last 3 years and shamefully had never been. We did the feed me option. Unfortunately, we were underwhelmed to say the least. The courses comprised of 1. smoked macadamias 2. beetroot dip and flat bread 3. Chickpea chips (all 3 of which at this stage had not blown my mind and could have come from a packet in Coles for all I knew) 4. Quartered cos lettuce with a drizzling of mayo and herbs (by this stage we’re starting to think where is the substance... $60 is a lot of money for a lettuce leaf) 5. Steamed miso broccolini (this dish was delicious but could have come as a side accompanying the final dish. 6. braised eggplant (this has a Rogan Josh type flavor and was delicious). I have never finished a feed me in my life, and trust me I’ve done a few. I left not hungry, but definitely not overly full. When spending so much I expected a lot more. Would go to veggie bar next door for 1/10 of the price and so much more flavor. Finally, they have an option to tick birthday when booking online. I don’t believe they should bother having this if you aren’t going to acknowledge the occasion, anything would have been nice. Glad I tried the place but would not be going back.

A really beautiful space, friendly team and delicious food. I don’t typically pick vegetarian restaurants but this is one I would go to again. Beetroot dip was the best!

From the moment we walked in, we knew we were in for a treat. Transformer is such a beautiful space, and the staff were attentive and friendly. They explained the menu beautifully. We ordered vegan degustations, and each dish was a perfectly executed delight - from baos to tomato tartare: it all had so much flavour. It really took my love of veggies to another level! So inspiring and delicious. Loved it and will be back for a special occasion.
Leena
Natural green leaves deco mixed with modern style restaurant just off the main street.<br/>Although booking for 3 which table had 4 settings, customer service was quite great.<br/><br/>Very attentive hospitality and knowledgeable lady staff kindly explained us some oily/non-oily dishes.<br/><br/>We ordered bread wirh beetroot dip on side. Delicious bread was mixed wholemeal and rye.<br/>The dip had a hint of beetroot and more of sweet pecan nutty flavour. I love this dish.<br/><br/>After the long indecisive conversation with my family, we decided to order "Feed me" signature dishes: taco, panisse, steamed broccolini, pilaf, cos salad and eggplant.<br/><br/>We love the beautiful decorations. However, all dishes had focused on strong flavours of wonderful sauce and oil.<br/><br/>The portions of dishes were perfect but the sauce was the Main. It was missing taste of real vegetable and beans. These were more for texture and colour. I would prefer dip style or dots on plate around the vegetable & peas.<br/><br/>It was really good experience.

I’m a meat eater and for a veggie restaurant this place is amazing packed full of flavour. The set menu is great value you get to try lots of different food.
Grome
Had a celebratory meal recently there for my granddaughter who is vegan. Lovely food in most attractive surroundings. Had set menu as we were a group of six. Food was most enjoyable but on cold midwinter night could have had more hot or warm food. Service and ambience were excellent, a most pleasant evening.
FoodN
Dined here as a large group. Had a booking but our table wasn’t ready and we were made to wait 45 mins!! The service was slow. It took another 20mins to get a drink and then after another wait the food finally started to arrive. We were all starving by this point. Some dishes we thought were very nice (broccoli/ corn fritters and eggplant) and others were just average (cos lettuce/ pumpkin / flatbread). Very noisy restaurant which made it hard to follow conversation around the table. If I return I will make sure I order from the menu and not have the set menu.
Eza Piyasena
Went for dinner with my partner, we are both vegetarian. We loved the Parmesan chips and the mushroom dish, both stand outs. The gnocchi was honestly not a favourite of ours, as we felt it lacked flavour and neither of us wanted to finish it which isn’t usually the case. Eat plate is quite small so don’t be afraid to order more than usual. Great ambience and service.
Good Food, Good Mood
Went here in a big group so had to order the set menu. The beetroot dip, broccolini, and pumpkin were probably the stand out dishes. Flavours were there but nothing outrageously memorable.
Emily Stephen
Service was great. Music tad too loud, probably not the best place to talk. <br/><br/>Food: after reading the review I figured damn this place must be amazing. But honestly it was mediocre. The only stand out was probably the kombu. The haloumi was oddly sweet. The avocado taco was just sad really. <br/>The seedlip drink was alright. Had a better version at IDES so was disappointed. <br/><br/>Conclusion: yeah...it’s a one time thing
Christina
Great food and service, I would not recommend getting their cake, we pre ordered it and no one out of the 15 of us were able to eat more than a few bites.
Chrissy Lu
Let’s start with a disclaimer.. I am not vegan or vegeterian and I didn’t choose to go here. But there I was on a Tuesday night having a vegeterian “feed me” banquet. And it was freaking delicious. Also whilst most restaurants will only take allergies into consideration for alterations to the menu I explained I had an aversion to eggplant and they accommodated more than willingly. Staff was attentive and quite lovely without being pretentious and the food was flavoursome and beatifully presented. The eight courses you get are truly a lovely little journey that will leave you full by the end. Standout dishes for me were the beetroot dip with flatbread, cos salad, broccolini, and corn and zucchini fritters. I would go back in a heartbeat for those. Definitely worth trying out at least once!
S
The fine dining counterpart to the Vegie Bar, it tries but falls short on many of the dishes<br/>Nothing wowed (except for the burata) and the random order of dishes and drinks seems to show food goes out when ready<br/>I definitely prefer Vegie Bar
Red Mind
Such a great experience we had here. The menu is beautifully designed with creativity and obvious knowledge. The combination of flavours and textures were perfectly balanced. We will definitely go back.

A friend and I dined here on a busy Thursday night. Lovely place with a fine dining feel without feeling too formal. Our order was as followsSmoked beetroot and pecan dip w/flatbread- LOVED the flat so delicious. I initially enjoyed the dip but did find it a bit to sweet to be able to finishAvacado, black bean, grilled spring onion taco- I didn't get a try of this but looked great very small serve thoughFried haloumi, prickly box honey (we didn't have this due to allergies), black olive and grapefruit- I really loved the balance of flavours here I did feel I missed the sweet element as I am allergic to honey would have been nice to have a syrup instead but otherwise loved thisSaffron, ricotta & parmesan gnocchi, peas, cultured butter, tarragon & lemon thyme- now I have never like gnocchi but I really did enjoy this gnocchi. It was melt in your mouth packed full of flavour deliciousness Roasted sweet potato, mandarin aioli, fetta, onion confit & zataar- an alright dish however I did find it a bit dry couldn't taste much out of the mandarin aioli. Would pass on this one next time<br/>King oyster mushrooms, confit garlic & pine nut puree, smoked shallot & porcini salt- Another great dish the mushrooms really provided the meaty-ness to the meal and we just delicious Overall I had great experience here and would love to come back. Our waiter was so lovely and was kind enough to tailor our dishes to our needs and even offered more flatbread once went devoured our first serving. I didn't love my watermelon, chia seed, mint, strawberry and lavender salt drink and spent some time picking bits of lavender out of my mouth wuld have loved a cocktail if I wasn't driving (maybe next time)
Kate Dougherty
Enjoyed dinner at Transformer last night. Beautiful venue and staff were very helpful and friendly. Between 3 we shared the beetroot and pecan dip with focaccia, the fried tofu bao, the ricotta gnocchi, the miso broccoli, the grilled haloumi with grapefruit, cinnamon pumpkin and the king brown mushrooms. Whilst I found all of the dishes quite tasty the haloumi was my personal favourite. I wasn’t a huge fan of the wine list so would probably go for a cocktail next time.

Unfortunately, Transformer has changed quite a lot over the past year or two. The emphasis seems to be on churning patrons in and out the door. We had a 6pm booking, and were told on at least 5 occasions during our meal (including immediately on arrival - not a nice welcome!) that we had to leave within 2 hours. We were advised that we had to order our starters and mains at the same time which seems frankly ridiculous, again we were told this was so that we could get out on time. As it was, the experience was so unpleasant that we were done by about 7pm and felt like we couldn't wait to leave. Additionally, there were no vegan red wines available by the glass, which is very disappointing for a vegan / vegetarian restaurant. The food was lovely but the attitude of the staff was such that we will not be returning anytime soon.
Colleen
Food was ok, main dishes appeared like an entrée dish. Portion size was too small. Disappointed in the pistachio yuzu ice cream. Nice service though.
Amysyder
I loved the atmosphere of this place! Me and some friends did the feed me option, which I would highly recommend, it’s a tad pricey but good if your looking to treat yourself to a nice meal. The sweet potato dish was amazing and definitely my favourite, I was also obsessed with the beetroot dip. At first I was worried it would not be enough food, however I was mistaken and sufficiently full by the end. Every dish had a great combination of flavours that all worked very well. The lettuce cups were a tad inconvenient to eat and some of the dishes were slightly too oily but other than that the food was amazing! The staff were very friendly, we had a lovely waitress who was very engaging. The food was spaced out nicely to allow us to really appreciate every dish! You do need a good two hours to fully appreciate the feed me menu, so would not recommend for a quick dinner. I would definitely come back to this restaurant again.
Lanikorving
We were really excited to have valentines dinner here as we’ve been several times before hand and have been blown away.<br/>Unfortunately this time we were left disappointed and Hungry, considering the price for the night plus wine matching, what was served really missed the mark. <br/>Tried to convey some feedback at the end of the night but was brushed off, with no apology or solution.
Simon Higgins
Sensational modern vegan dining experience. Combine it with a great service attitude and alternative music and you've got a winner, for this reviewer anyway. Highlights were the Croquettes. Yum!
Me
Fresh and interesting. Standout amazing. Flavors so bold and tasty.<br/><br/>The chickpea panisse!! Omg I wish I could buy them instead of chips for home!!<br/><br/>Staff were very friendly and nice really enjoyed my experience.
Siân Cole
Great fine dining vegetarian restaurant. Serving sizes worked well for us as we are not big eaters and still get to chose a variety of dishes. My partner’s favorite (note he is not a vegetarian) was the fried tofu bun. My favorite was the pumpkin - best pumpkin ever. We also got the haloumi, brocollini, and gnocchi - all we great with flavor and textures. Also got dessert partner had the brownie which he found “a bit vegan” and not to his taste. I got the yuzo ice-cream which I loved. <br/>Will be back!
Melbourniancritic (The Melbourne Experience)
As you enter this beautifully converted warehouse style restaurant, you can’t help but to admire the fit out and get excited about the innovative plant based dining experience that awaits you.  Transformer Fitzroy is what we would call fine dining in pure vegan style, where you can sit back and enjoy an abundance of deliciously fresh and flavoursome dishes in a sophisticated yet relaxed setting.
Berreto
Absolutely top notch establishment. Everything from the first welcoming hello, to the 'elixirs', wine list, entrees, mains and desserts, layout, music/ambience...was simply perfect. If you're a meatie and wondering if you'll like it, trust me, you will. If you're veggo or vegan...you'll be in veg heaven. Simply cannot fault this place. Bravo, Transformer, Bravo!! Five bright, shiny stars.
Shalsy
The food and concept is great but I was really disappointment with my experience. we had a very long wait between starters and mains and it’s almost as if they forgot serving us.
Helen Liu
The restaurant is very elegant and retro. Service is friendly as well. We had 4 plates and two desserts amongst two of us. Including broccolini, king mushroom, eggplant and the pilaf. All dishes are well presented, tasty and filling, would be winter dishes that are not on the refreshing side. The desserts are very nicely balanced and not so sweet. We were very full at the end.
DineByNine
I took my parents there for Mothers Day. Upon entering, they welcomed us and their service was impeccable. With every dish, they explained what t was. We had a set menu for Mothers Day and honestly it was the most expensive bill Ive paid for food. But....totally worth it. Would i come again with others? Yes. Would I come myself just for a meal....sadly no. I have my reasons...sorry.<br/>However, still giving 5 stars.
Enjoy It
Not at all what I expected, never have too high hopes with plant based establishments. The fit out is superb, love the cosy ness created by the different spaces and the impressive plant life! The service was also first rate, perfect balance between attentive without smothering. We opted for the degustation, volume wise this was perfect and a few very interesting flavoursome dishes were presented. Although just a small nibble I think the truffle crisps were the most memorable, gorgeous. A great experience although as a protein lover I find it hard not to feel I have just spent quite a lot of money for a variety of side dishes :-) having said that it’s certainly the best planty establishment I have visited <br/>

I was mesmerised with the good reviews and the fusion vegetarian menu offered by this place. We booked for our special day and loved the ambience. But we were very disappointed with the small portions of the servings. I did like the brownie and the lentil rice dish. The corn fritters were very very oily..couldn't finish eating them. The other starter chickpeas panisse tasted good but again was very oily.<br/>Probably would not be visiting again.

Attended a mid week team dinner here and what a treat it was! We had the feed me banquet which was incredible! The dishes were so filling by the end. The staff are awesome and the ambiance of this place is 10/10! Highly recommend.

I’m normally not a huge fan of vegetarian food because I immediately think of salad. But Transformer - you have transformed my thoughts. The food here is so full of flavour and exquisitely cooked. <br/>Try the eggplant and oyster mushrooms - divine! <br/>

My mum, who is vegan, recently came to visit me so I had the opportunity to explore lots of Melbournes vegetarian restaurants.<br/>Transformer was definitely a highlight, as there is a lot of thought which goes into the unique flavors of each dish. It makes you wonder why we even need meat anyway! <br/>The service is also attentive and very friendly.<br/>I highly recommend trying the mushrooms and the aubergine! <br/>If you can, leave some room for their unique and delicious desserts too!

This was my first visit to transformer for food. I have had a late drink there a couple of times, and really enjoyed the atmosphere, but this time we came to eat, and we were not disappointed! As a group of five, we ordered the chefs degustation menu. Everything was spot on flavor wise, completely delicious and original. The only feedback I’d give is that there wasn’t enough to completely satisfy our hunger. The service is outstanding, decor and atmosphere stunning and I’m looking forward to returning.

My mouth exploded with flavour during various entrees. Portions were not large, but the carefully prepared dishes were visually appealing. Prices were much more reasonable than expected. Waiters were also extremely enthusiastic.

Absolutely amazing! My first time trying vegetarian cuisine and was very hesitant, by the end of the night I loved it and wanted to come back again!

We had an absolutely stunning dinner here the other night.<br/>Not knowing much about this place (other than it’s vegetarian) but having walked past it numerous times and thought it looked nice, we booked it for dinner. <br/>First off, the venue is stunning! The outside looks very industrial/converted warehouse esque but inside its full of beautiful hanging plants (go and you’ll see what I mean). <br/>Food wise, we opted for the feed me menu. <br/>Dishes included: almonds to start, carrot dip and flatbread, spelt seed buns with tofu, cos salad, lentil and rice pilaff and braised eggplant. We also made a special request to get the haloumi dish as well. <br/>What was particularly good - Pretty much everything! However, our favourite dishes were the haloumi (the combination of sweet/sour/salty was just so on point), the cos salad (so fresh and such an amazing dressing) and the eggplant was pretty top notch too.<br/>One of my favourite feeds of the year so far (and I’m not even vegetarian!!).
Food For Fun
Ambience, sugary smiles, and way of platting cannot win you stars. <br/>Ultimately, food is for hunger <br/>and <br/>we got goats curd (50 gram portion) without cherry (cherry -out of stock)??? <br/>I think it should be part of kids menu.<br/>7 pieces of gnocchi in a plate for $16-$18. <br/>We had to go to other restaurant to feed ourselves, after 7 baby course (kids portion size) & pricey drinks at transformers and after paying $300 between 3 of us.<br/>7 star prices for a converted garage shed.

This is another restaurant that I'm glad exists but I'm not really sure if I'm loving the food. It's very busy and noisy and everyone seems to be having a good time.

Vegan and vegetarian food have mostly been left to the hippies and activist. Not anymore. As healthy living becomes a catch cry, it's great to see many restaurants upping the game for this type of cuisine. Sister of Soul, Serotonin, Shakahari and Transformer are just a few. The latter, however, has elevated it to another level and it was a joy to dine here. From the atmosphere, sevice and plating, you know you're in for an occasion; rather than the thoughtless casually tossed tofu, dahl curries and steamed veggies I see a lot of places do. As a canvassing statement i found the food top notch..I'll leave the pictures do the rest. A must try for those who wants to eat well and feel well.

As a non-vegetarian with two vegetarians in our group of four, I had some reservations about eating here. However I found the food here to be delicious and would readily return. We had the "feed me" variety and all of us liked every single dish with generous serves. Service was excellent, decor relaxed and pleasant. Cost $328 with drinks and wine. Last time at a vegetarian (Yellow, Potts Point) I left disappointed and hungry.

Beautifully presented dishes that go beyond the looks, the taste of each one was just as good. We started with plates and ended up trying starters. I just wish you could get more from the gnocchi as it was the best yet small for a main. The Atmosphere and the service was 10/10.

Amazing cocktails and food! Broccolini.. corn fritters.. cos lettuce dishes were phenomenal. Staff goes above and beyond.. really enjoyed our feed me meals! Can’t wait to come back.

Had the banquet, everything was pretty nice but stand out was the eggplant dish. Texture = melt in your mouth! The salad was cool served in its own little lettuce bowl, haven’t seen one like that before thought it was very creative. Like the venue too. Had a cocktail served with a bliss ball which was tasty. Would come back and order a la carte or even just for a drink.

Never thought vegetarian food can be so delicious! Went here with my partner and we loved everything. Our favourite dish was Fried Halumi! Great service and delicious cocktails too. One of my new favourite places in Fitzroy 👌🏻

The restaurant is an absolute joke- taking hipster gullibility to the next level.  One of our main plates was literally a small mushroom sliced into half and this was very expensive considering. Our dinner party left the restaurant starving. While the food was well presented, there is nothing that would draw us back here.

We are vegetarian and love creative food. We went to Transformer to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and it was absolutely FANTASTIC!!! We had the feed me option and everything was perfect from the service to the timing of the dishes coming out to the quantity that they served us, as we are big eaters! We were really satisfied! We had 2 meat eaters in our group of 8 and they were also more than satisfied too! The ambience is lovely and the restaurant was not noisy!! That usually stops us going out to restaurants as we cannot talk comfortably!! All in all I hope we can continue to enjoy and celebrate more milestones there.

I’m not a vegetarian, but transformer was able to make my tastebuds dance.<br/>Came here for a friends birthday who was vegetarian.<br/>We had the feed me option which I think was $55 pp, which was reasonable for the amount of food you get. The dishes kept coming and we were getting so full!<br/>Absolutely enjoyed the pita and hummus dip and the sweet corn fritter fries!<br/>Desserts were yummy!<br/>Staff were really friendly and attentive. Service was great.<br/>Atmosphere was relaxing and comfortable.<br/>Would definitely return when I’m feeling vegetarian and would definitely recommend to all my vegetarian friends.<br/>Take your lover, friends, family and your vegetarian friend along.
Suburb Review
Hit and miss, some dishes were nice like the mushrooms and corn fritters .. but nothing to die for. Overall an expensive vegan dinner (for mainly lettuce) not the very best of service from most and a restaurant that lacks lustre and happy feels.

Food was fun, filling and full of flavours (we had the banquet). Service was excellent - except for one waitress who we had a minor issue with. She seemed bothered that we asked her to repeat the dish she brought over... Other than that, it was a great time! Have been recommending all my friends to dine here soon.

All vegetarian menu makes it easy to choose everything! Transformer is a fancy twist to dinner to take a date or a visiting friend. Eggplant dish up there with my favourite. If you get the ‘feed me’ option, be prepared to roll out of the restaurant. All dishes are delicious and fresh. Staff are attentive and cocktails are well made. A little more pricey than some places but if you don’t mind spending a bit more it’s well worth it.

Cool funky place to go for a fancy vegan dinner, the food presented gorgeously but tasted average, atmosphere was lovely though, the waitress was also extremely lovely!

Had a really really nice time here with a few friends. We came at scattered times, which the staff were more than accommodating for. The cocktails were all delicious and interesting, as was the food. My favourite was the eggplant with the lentils as a side, which our waitress recommended. Staff were attentive and aware and we all shared about 9 plates which was the perfect amount and we got to try everything we wanted. <br/><br/>I love that they pace the food, it's a slow way of eating that is really engaging and enjoyable. We were all full of delicious nutritious food and not too full at the end. And we all had 2 cocktails each, and a few glasses of wine and it only ended up being $65 a head. Totally affordable for a fine dining experience. Keep up the good work!

Transformer serve excellent food, in a very cool and relaxed environment. The prices are a bit steep, but its well worth it. I recommend getting a party of 7 and opting for the set menu. At $55 a head it is worth every penny.

My wife and I dined at Transformer using a gift voucher from our daughter, so the prices did not faze us.  We loved the comfortable atmosphere, the service was excellent, and the food was original, varied, and delicious!  This is a place to go for a special occasion.  We will definitely go again, in a bigger group so we can sample even more dishes.   If you just want to fill up on cheap and tasty vegetarian food I recommend Lord of the Fries just down the road.  But for a special treat I highly recommend Transformer.

This is the best food I have ever eaten in Melbourne. The three entrees were all perfect, 10 out of ten, the dessert was also 10 out of ten (Mmm...yum!), and the mains were about 8 out of 10, but that may have been our choices. The service from the American waitress was also perfect, and the ambience is a beautiful balance of feeling like you are in a community, and yet no one can hear your conversation. I will definitely be back and have referred my Facebook friends. Thank you for your all round excellence!

A group of us dined here a few weeks ago for lunch. The place is really beautiful inside. The service was very good also. However, in regards  to the food, the price is ridiculous in my honest opinion for it's portion size. I understand it's a vegetarian/vegan restaurant, but what they charge for what is served is not proportional. For example, $21 for chestnut gnocchi, when I was expecting a large plate of gnocchi all that came out was 7 pieces. It was presented beautifully but 7 pieces only was too small for my opinion, especially for that price. In addition, $19 for king oyster mushroom; I'd understand the price if there was a lot of king mushrooms on the plate but we were only given 3. Everyone left the place unsatisfied and hungry. We were thinking of ordering more food, but the price turned us off especially after seeing the portion size. <br/><br/>Overall, beautiful restaurant with food beautifully presented but food portions are small and overpriced. This was not only my opinion, but the entirety of the group.

Quite an expensive meal but it is most definitely worth it! The degustation was nothing i've ever had (that was vegetarian anyway) but it is a must try for those more willing to spend some money!

Beautiful atmosphere and decor. The staff were super lovely and knowledgeable.<br/>Food was delicious, lots of variety in the set menu. Love this place!

What an amazing and interesting venue! Loved the ambience and the decor and the energy in the room!<br/><br/>We were served by wonderful, smiling and happy people, who were more than able to deal with a more than full house. <br/><br/>We chose to have tacos and buns for starters. The soft shell tacos were great, perfectly sized and filled, the buns though needed a bit more flavour. <br/><br/>Next we had the mushrooms and the signature eggplant dish, these were mind blowing! Well worth coming there just for those. <br/><br/>Finally we ended with a chocolate brownie, which was amazing, spoilt only by the coconut ice cream that came with it. Chocolate and hazelnut don’t go well with coconut. Vanilla would have worked better. <br/><br/>All in all, a great place that I recommend highly
