truly asian fusion at its best. everything is packed with flavour and balanced really well. especially love the lamb ribs. always a recommendation when overseas guests come to melbourne for a visit!
Fresh and flavoursome. Great over drinks.
I was here for the vegustation, and having been an avid meat eater, safe to say, this is the place to come to if you want to fall in love with vegan or vegetarian food.
Put simply, the food and and the accompaniments were incredible, so much so that we asked for more of the sauce on the side just to keep our taste buds tingling.
The drinks were really good as well, I had the Pandan Colada which was a spin on the classic Pina colada and like the rest of their menu, it was refereshingly fresh and unique.
Great job!
Went to Rice Paper Scissors for a Dinner of 3 on February 8, 2020. It was my first time and the freshness of the flavours were overwhelmingly good. Growing up in an Asian household, this place really gave me nostalgic yet modern vibes of the food that was offered; it's fusion done right.
Highly recommend this place and would like to give Bella, who was stationed at our table a massive shoutout for being very friendly and efficient.
Fantastic food and service First restaurant I got to go to. As I had just arrived in Melbourne from New Zealand.
Excellent food, beautiful staff, very friendly and welcoming. One of the best Asia fusion food I’ve had. 5 stars from me. Keep up the good work👍🏽
I have been to the RPS in the city, and always wanted to try the Fitzroy branch too. Same layout but it was much easier to get a seat here! The food was delicious as always, and such good value. Absolutely loved the coconut snapper, and the galloping horses is always a winner. Cocktails went down a treat too.
Went on a Tuesday night so it wasnt too busy. Service was very friendly which is always an add on to a good experience.
We ordered 5 dishes and the price was very reasonable. We had the wok tossed squid, lamb ribs, thai bbq chicken. pork belly and steamed duck leg. Squid was definitely our favourite out of all. I enjoyed the thai bbq chicken and my friend loved the lamb ribs. Duck was a little bit under seasoned but still yummy, pork belly was really fat and the lean bit was very hard... And by the time we are having the 5th dish we were already really full. So it didnt bother us that the pork belly wasnt perfect..
Yuzu cocktail was absolutely amazing!!
Rice paper scissors caters to all tastes and will accommodate for allergies and food intolerances inc gluten and dairy. They also have a vegan menu available with is yet another tick.
Food - fresh and balanced.
Service - 3/5. Could be better but still acceptable.
Ambience - very loud and noisy but thats expected for a small busy restaurant.
Fabulous modern Vietnamese cuisine packed with punchy flavours! We shared the snapper, barramundi, lamb ribs, beef and duck salad. All were 5 star dishes- textually interesting with complex but complimentary flavours.
Rice Paper Scissors is a good place to chill with friends as their Asian street food dishes are all designed for sharing.
For starters, we ordered some mocktails with Yuzu and Lychee which was really refreshing and unique. It looked really pretty as well.
We chose these 5 dishes for sharing:
1. Ma Hor - caramelised five-spiced, pressed tofu and peanut on compressed watermelon - This was really interesting as it tasted like a very flavourful meat and when combined with the compressed watermelon (which doesn't even look like watermelon), it is a very unique and interesting flavour!
2. Chinese Chive Cakes - pan-fried shanghai pancakes filled with taro, cabbage, ginger and chives - These cakes were very crunchy and crispy but was a bit bland on its own, so dipping it in the sauce provided made the flavours stand out more.
3. Asian Greens - wok-tossed asian greens with fresh shiitake mushrooms in a special sauce and pork belly - The greens soaked up the special sauce and tasted realy nice, but was a bit too salty for me. I think this would be great with rice! The pork belly was tender and nice.
4. Coconut Snapper - citrus cured local snapper with pomelo, coconut and chilli and served with crispy wonton crackers - This dish is nothing i've seen before as the snapper was served cold and with a soury taste, almost reminding me of salsa, and then there were pieces of crispy wonton crackers to serve it up with. The texture of wonton crackers crunch and soft snapper - interesting!
5. Banana Blossom Salad - banana blossom and smoked tofu salad with fresh herbs, chilli and lychee - wow I didn't even know banana blossom can be eaten like this! nice unique tastes in this dish that is really hard to describe! You have to try it to see!
The dessert were scoops of creamy coconut ice cream with toppings which was really nice and refreshing, and a great way to end the big meal.
Overall, the service was very attentive, staff were friendly and food is just so so unique and different - it is a first time to try these tastes and how it can be matched together to create a dish. Thank you for inviting us Rice Paper Scissors.
We were invited to Rice Paper Scissors tonight a restaurant I have previously experienced at their sister venue. I was surprised at how crazy busy it was of a Monday night, their customisable five dish share menu is clearly working wonders.
We essentially made this a 7 dish menu by adding two desserts. I believe this put the food menu at $95 for two and for that amount I wasn’t overly full though there were certainly some standout dishes. I also definitely recommend the Great Leap Forward cocktail which was really refreshing.
For me the must orders are the delectable tuna cracker and citrus cured coconut snapper with crispy wonton crackers. Both of these were extremely flavoursome and absolutely bloody delicious. I could have eaten them all day. Overall the other three dishes we tried weren’t in the same ballpark so it was unfortunate we started with those two as the remainder just couldn’t measure up and left me feeling a little disappointed in comparison
This place has been on my foodie bucket list for so long and finally an opportunity to try it. We were on the waiting list and for a Friday night we didn't wait too long. We were given a nice table by the bar so we could see the bartenders do their magic. The service was really good and we were thoroughly explained the dishes. The food itself was so delicious. Great flavour combinations well executed. Can't wait to back! **Disclaimer: although the restaurant has generously invited me to their restaurant this review is still based on my genuine opinion.
There's a reason why this restaurant can claim three successful venues. Their take on Asian fusion is interesting and very well executed. They offer a variety of innovative spins on the classic dishes of Thailand and Vietnam (mostly) along some items that pay homage to countries like China and Myanmar. It's also super nice to have a fully vegan menu to choose from at this spot.
I enjoyed a banquet of Chinese chive cakes filled with taro, eggplant ceviche with cassava chips, mini bahn mi rolls, Burmese tea leaf salad, banana blossom salad and salt and pepper banana blossoms. The chive cakes were two cute little pockets filled with veg and served with a nice dipping sauce - highly recommend.
The bahn mi was filled with what tasted like mock meat which was a nice alternative to a simple fried tofu. They were the perfect size to whet the appetite before the meal. They're also not overly filled, meaning you can stuff some salad inside if you're into dish combining. The banana blossom salad is an incredible addition, although I also really enjoyed it on its own. That said, I think I prefered the Burmese salad, which is texturally diverse and offers a satisfying brininess.
But my favourite dish of all was the salt and pepper banana blossoms, which are fried to perfection and topped with an incredible coconut chilli sauce. I would go back to Rice Paper again and again just for this amazing, crunchy, umami-rich dish alone. Loved it on it's own as well as wrapped in some peanut-lathered roti.
For dessert, I had the "Mum, I dropped my ice cream" and the coffee parfait. Both feature a lot of crumble, one vanilla and the other chocolate. The first dish is topped with condensed milk and white chocolate and is ideal for sweet tooths. The second is smaller and less sweet and is a nice alternative to a post-dinner coffee. If you're getting drinks, the whisky and apple highball is really nice and refreshing while the Pandan colada is rich and strong with citrus to cut the creaminess. It's absolutely delicious and served in a cute tiki glass.
I know this review is getting quite long but I can't finish up without commending the staff, who are extremely attentive, friendly and super knowledgeable about each dish on the menu, which is something I really value in a venue and shows a high level of professionalism.
We were very kindly invited to dine at Rice Paper Scissors in exchange for an honest review. This place serves modern Southeast Asian tapas-style food, and the layout is cosy with lots of different seating styles from bar seats and high tables to comfy nooks out the front and a large dining table at the back. The food was really more of the Vietnam and Thailand side of Southeast Asia as opposed to Singaporean and Malaysian, and the dishes were all thoughtfully put together. Tamara, our waitress, was kind and attentive, as were all the other staff, and we could tell they were genuine while not being overly intrusive to the customers. They don't take dinner reservations here and it gets quite busy at night (we were here on a Sunday and it was still quite crowded), so be prepared for a wait during peak times.
All the items here are tapas style, so most people would order the set menu which allows you to choose any 5 items on the menu for $30 per person for lunch, or $35 per person for dinner. Each dish individually is priced at roughly $15. There is also a whole menu of vegan dishes for those so inclined. We chose the:
- coconut snapper (cured snapper with pomelo, coconut and chilli on wonton crackers),
- tempura buns (vegan, tempura eggplant with cucumber and vegan mayo),
- crying tiger (chargrilled wagyu with leaves to wrap it up)
- sticky pork belly (tamarind caramel sauce, topped with herb salad)
- khao soi gai (this was a special - Chiang Mai style curry with chicken thigh, egg noodles and crispy egg noodles)
The set menu doesn't come with rice or roti, so you'll have to order these on the side if you want. We had the roti.
Pretty much all of the dishes were flavour bombs and a delight to eat. The coconut snapper came in small pieces for you to put on the large crackers - very delicious. I could have used a little more snapper to fill up the crackers, but that was probably because they were generous with the size of the crackers to begin with. The tempura buns were nice and done well, a good vegan option, but as we weren't vegan ourselves we felt it was one of the simpler dishes and would probably opt for one of the more filling choices next time. The chargrilled wagyu came as 4 slices for 2 people - nicely charred and tender. We thought the sticky pork belly and khao soi gai were outstanding, simply delicious. I would order a double portion of the pork belly next time round. The khao soi gai was moderately spicy (which to most people translates to slightly spicy) and along with the pork belly were also the heartier options among what we chose. Lastly, the roti (which actually came first) was really well done - a very large piece folded up nicely. Flaky on the outside and stretchy on the inside, it was a great snack and/or carb to go along with the food.
Size wise, the portions did look on the smaller side but we were actually reasonably full by the end with just the additional roti to share. Considering the quality of the food, I'd say it's still reasonably good value for money at $35 per person. If you're particularly hungry, a tapas style place probably isn't the best choice for a meal to begin with, though you can probably add in a dish or dessert and still pay less than what you would at other similarly styled places. I'd also recommend the heartier options like the pork belly or lamb ribs (which we didn't order but from what we saw were big portions as well and we will definitely try next time).
Which brings me to the desserts. I would totally recommend grabbing a dessert if you're not yet full by the end. These are generously sized and great for sharing if you're almost full. Order one on your own if you have a second stomach. We had the banana and nutella roti as well as the coconut and mint ice cream, and both came in much bigger portions than expected - extremely satisfying. The roti was satisfying and indulgent, while the coconut ice cream was cooling and refreshing. We would definitely order dessert again.
Overall, we had a very pleasant experience and a great meal. Thank you so much Ellie, Tamara and the rest of the team for a wonderful evening!
I have been wanting to visit Rice Paper Scissors for the longest time and tonight got to try their 5 dishes share menu with cocktails and dessert. The venue was quite dark and intimate and wonderfully designed with plenty of share style tables, stylish mood lighting and candles.
Their cocktail menu gives us a hint of what’s coming with many a fusion of classic meets eastern. We sipped on a Pandan Colada and a Don’t yuzu want me (dry gin, yuzu and bitters, Asian inspired G&T).
Tonight’s dining we chose five tapas style share plates, some roti and of course dessert.
The tuna cracker was no regular cracker! To start, the cracker was a delicate prawn cracker, it was piled high was sashimi tuna, banging fresh flavours of chilli and herbs and sweetened by a hidden squid ink layer. The prawn cracker texture with all these ingredients is perfection.
Along the same lines we also ordered the Coconut ceviche snapper, this arrived with huge fried wantons and a citrusy, kaffir, coconuty snapper, these flavours where both delicate and punchy, how is this possible?
Next we tried the Burmese tea leaf salad and added the crispy pork. We also ordered a roti to wrap our salad for easier consumption. The nutty salad and cubes of pork had a wonderfully caramelized crunch and the whole plate was beautifully dressed.
Our Mini Vietnamese baguettes with Soft shell Crab & a light spread of pâté where wonderfully sweet, tarty, soft and crunchy with a nice chilli hit to finish off. My mouth is tingling with happiness.
We finished with The Thai bbq chicken, marinated in soy, lemongrass and chilli served with nahm Jim jaew. The recommendation for consumption is to layer cucumber with pieces of chicken and dip in the sauce, thus ensuring maximum texture and taste satisfaction. Personally I found the flavours and texture of the chicken to be superb and I didn’t want to dip and rearrange the flavour.
For dessert we chose Mum I dropped my ice cream, which was a refreshing ice cream (not the yuzu sorbet mentioned on their menu on Zomato). This came with the crunchy short bread and rice pops and was visually a wow!
Our other choice was the kaffir lime splice, this Asian take of the spice ice cream is a cracker. The fragrant kaffir hits you in the face as it lands the table, I have died and gone to heaven. The Thai basil and kaffir lime granita is the perfect combo with the housemade coconut ice cream with lovely slices of coconut.
Ps the Malaysian roti with peanut dipping sauce was great on its on and highly recommended!
Thanks so much for having us in.
My partner and I were kindly invited to dine as guests at Rice Paper Scissors in Fitzroy. We chose to attend on a Saturday night at dinnertime. When we arrived there was a short queue but as we had a reservation we were seated quickly.
At first we were seated at a share table but were later given an option to be seated at the bar if we were more comfortable there and we took the opportunity to move. I loved watching the bartender in action as he effortlessly pushed out drink after drink which all looked beautiful.
The menu is a variety of modern Thai tapas like sharing dishes: For $34.50 per person you can order 5 dishes of your choice from the menu. They also have a full vegan menu you can choose from too.
We chose the:
Tuna cracker (sashimi tuna and lemongrass salad on rice wafer with squid ink emulsion): This dish was my partner’s dish of the night. It was full of different layers of flavours and textures exploding in your mouth. It was also fresh and a great way to whet our appetite for the meal ahead.
Coconut snapper (citrus cured local snapper with pomelo, coconut and chilli on crispy wonton crackers): This dish was also delicious with bold flavours and soft beautifully cooked snapper on top of a large crunchy cracker.
BBQ king prawns: This deceivingly simple dish blew our minds. The prawns were huge, bursty, bbq-ed to perfection and were seriously smokey and sweet to eat.
BBQ lamb ribs (whisky marinated ribs in special sticky sauce): My dish of the night - the ribs were seriously tender and falling off the bone and I wanted to lick all the sauce off the place.
Sticky pork belly: The pork belly was fatty and cooked beautifully in a sticky sauce and to cut through the fat we had a fresh, naturally sweet beanshoot salad with herbs that delivered punch after punch of flavour.
For drinks we had mocktails that looked not only beautiful but tasted divine.
For dessert we had the Terrarium which is Vietnamese coffee mousse with a peanut and chocolate soil. I enjoyed the different textures of this dish and the aromatic flavour of the coffee mousse but the ratio of soil to mousse was a little imbalanced as there was too much soil.
We also had the Mum I dropped my ice cream which was a beautifully presented yuzu sorbet on top of a puffed rice crumble with condensed milk and white chocolate ganache. I enjoyed the flavour of the sorbet but again there was too much crumble to sorbet imbalance.
All in all a great meal with excellent service. I also loved the fact that the atmosphere was chill and that the music was at a comfortable level so that we could talk without shouting at each other. I also loved that the dishes came out in order of seafood to the heavier dishes like red meat. Thank you Rice Paper Scissors for your kind invite!
Rice Paper Scissors Fitzroy is situated right in the heart of bustling Brunswick Street. We were invited to try some of their dishes. It was a very busy Sunday afternoon but from my observation, staff members remained cheerful, upbeat and took the time to explain menu items to customers.
We had their very reasonably priced 5 items for $29.95 per person option. The main star of the day was the lamb ribs. They were 'fall off the bone' tender and they were drenched in such a beautiful sauce that I wanted to take it home with me. The Thai BBQ chicken had just the right amount of char and was plated elegantly. We also really enjoyed the wagyu beef - this was tender and juicy. The dipping sauce was tasty as well.
The mini banh mi used brioche buns (not something I'm used to) and the barramundi had a sauce that was slightly too salty. But these were very minor issues.
Dessert was another great experience. The beautiful terrarium consisted of coffee mousse and crunchy bits on top - a perfect combination. And the banana chocolate roti brought the whole meal to a satisfying conclusion.
The interior of the restaurant was funky and eclectic which just added to the chill atmosphere. Thank you for having us Rice Paper Scissors Fitzroy!
Had a wonderful experience here. The food is lovely and inventive and although the plates seemed small, by the time we finished eating we couldn't fit one more thing in. It was so nice to experience all the different flavours. Simply Yum
Love love love Rice Paper Scissors. Have been coming here ever since they first opened their doors. Such a gem of a place delivering mouth watering food that you will remember for a long time. I don’t have a favourite thing on the menu as they’re all delicious. If I could mention one negative thing about the Fitzroy location, it would have to be the fact they’ve taken the fried chicken ribs off the menu and only have it as special every now and again. Please put it back in the regular menu. Oh, and the mango sorbet in a toasted brioche witch crushed peanuts and drizzle of condensed milk. I’m not sure why that dessert was taken off the menu because it was the bomb.
Everything was well marinated. It is full of Asian flavour but also something unique added on that goes well with drinks
We love the BBQ lamb ribs and the pork belly. All of their fish dishes are great too! Smal portion so it would be great value if you have the banquet. I didnt get it as I had breakfast just before arriving
We went here on a public holiday, the service was great and the staff were mostly attentive however I felt the public holiday surcharge was a bit too much.
Out of the dishes we ordered I definitely enjoyed the barramundi and pork belly. The king prawns left a lot to be desired, would try something else next time. Overall I felt the dishes were very flavorful and had the right level of spice.
The volume of the food was also appropriate and we definitely didn’t leave the restaurant feeling hungry, I would come back for another visit on a non public holiday!
We had such a lovely evening at Rice Paper Scissors. We went with the recommended 5 dishes to share and it was so much food!
There was a braised goat shoulder curry on the specials menu tonight, it was delicious! Anither favourite was the barramundi dish. We weren't a fan of the Chinese Spice Cakes, they lacked flavour and were quite floury.
Overall, a really great evening!
2 people, very long wait time as they didn’t take booking but since we were determined to try the place, we busied ourselves in the CBD during the 2 hour wait time. Was the wait worth it? Yes and also because we had other stuff that we could do in the city while waiting. The food and the lychee drink was definitely delicious and if it wasn’t for such long wait times, we might be back a second time. But for now there are many other places that beckon our tummies and we will happily oblige. But RPS is certainly an establishment worth trying.
Good vibe here. Staff are friendly and efficient. Food are delish. Definitely recommending tuna cracker and pork belly bun. Sit at the bar and enjoy the interaction with the staff..!
Having tried the sister restaurant in the city, I knew that my visit here would be a treat.
Such great value with amazing food! My friend and I ordered the 5 dishes for $69 and they were all very good. My favourite was the wagu beef and the coconut snapper - omg - soooo good!
The menu and wine list is very good, service friendly and great. This is such a great restaurant and you will definitely leave satisfied after eating here.
The deserts were amazing!!! Would go back for the desert. We had the Kaffir lime and homemade coconut ice cream and ‘mum , I dropped my ice cream. Highly recommend both.
The food was nice but nothing exceptional. We had the coconut snapper which was delicious, the crying tiger was nice. The asian greens was just a bowl of half boiled vegetables with no flavour. And the special which was a noodle dish and it was quite nice. The service was very quick but with a bit of attitude.
+ Great tasting menu. Serving Asian fusion exactly as what I am always craving for. Fun staff.
- Waiting a bit long. But food quality is worth the wait.
Overall: love this place
Nice spot and delish food! Selecting 5 options gives you a good range to taste. Service and ambience were great. If you are craving for Asian food and in Fitzroy, check this place out.
My new favourite restaurant!! Everything we tried was delicious, interesting and well portioned. The price point is great for an upmarket but not fussy, filling but not stodgy meal. The ideal second date location and also good for an evening with friends. A special, memorable meal.
The 5 dish menu is really good. Picking 5 dishes for 2 people allows you to try a good range of food. The pork belly and ceviche are especially good. Nice cocktails too.
Came here for dinner with mum and really enjoyed it here is what I ordered:
- Asian greens: Mum and I loved this, I don’t have a photo but it was perfectly stir fried
- Grilled Calamari: Also another favourite I really enjoyed the complexity of the flavours and the coconut really added to it
- Crying tiger: this was underwhelming for wagyu but it was alright
- BBQ king prawns: This was overpriced but was still juicy and very lovely.
-Thai Sangria: Nice and refreshing to accompany with fusion food
In summary the food was great and I really loved the customer service!!
went for dinner at about 9:20 and had a 25 min wait, so worth it! Amazing options for any gluten free foodie ❤️ The papaya salad was the best!!!
Love this place, we seemed to come back here every year around my birthday for dinner. I was there last night for dinner with my nieces and nephews and we had the chefs table. The staff were extremely friendly and food was so yummy. Always ordered my favourite cocktail “Chiang Mai Bloody Mary” on very visit. So spicy and savoury, just delish!!
Went there for lunch on Sunday and was very happy about the choice. Absolutely awesome place! The staff is very friendly and helpful! The food’s so flavoursome!
Love the food and the service here! I visit this outlet more often than the city one. Easier to get a park in front of the restaurant and less busy. Always would always bring friends over and all of them love it!
Wheelchair access outside. Moderate step to go inside but we were able to manage with our own 90cm ramp with electric wheelchairs. No accessible bathrooms.
Staff were really accomadating. Were happy to move things and people around to get us in. Nothing was a problem.
We had 2 banquets on our table. One meat and one vegan and both were amazing.
Definitely an experience and a wonderful night out!
Food is delicious! My favourite is the duck salad or the bao buns. I have been to both Fitzroy and the city location. I prefer the Fitzroy location if you can get one of the tables.
Came here for dinner on a Wednesday night with friends. It was very busy but the food came very quickly. Really enjoyed every dishes! Great place to catch up with friends.
Love this place so much , I always come back for the lamb ribs as they are some of the best I have ever had. The price is so reasonable and the portion sizes are generous. I love the cyring tiger, the banh mi with soft shell crab and also the galloping horses
Came here for dinner on a Saturday night and only had tables outside. It was very busy but food came out very quick. Ordered the roti, pork belly and Shanghai buns. Really enjoyed every dish and the roti dipping sauce was out of this world. Would definitely go back
Great service and food! Was so impressed with the food which was amazing. Went with 4 girlfriends and we were able to get our fill from ordering 5 dishes each! Well worth it.
Really delicious food with great service. Would have given 5 stars if it was economical. I ordered the 5 tapas for $65 for 2. After having it I was still hungry. I expect to fill my hunger after spending $32.5 for my meal. Still dont mind going there once in a while.
Went here for lunch during the week and had the $59 special where we could pick 5 dishes to share. Very hard decision as they all sounded very appetizing. All were delicious
Fun place. Great friendly staff and tasty cocktails. The food may not be fine dining but for the price it is hard to beat. Tasty, casual and great atmosphere. One of Brunswick streets best
My Key 3 Pointers
• You must enjoy sharing food. Don’t attempt if you want your own three-course meal to yourself,
• Can’t decide between Thai or Vietnamese, they have both cuisines covered,
• If you get anxious about no reservations then don’t go during peak service times,
The menu is impressive and we opted for the five dishes $65.00 for two. I love trying lots of food when I go to a new restaurant. At first, I felt this may be a little restrictive, It was the perfect amount. This restaurant really thinks about accommodating for food allergies, intolerances, vegetarian, vegan, meat lovers, you name it.
We had the duck salad, crispy soft shell banh mi, char-grilled Wagu, grilled calamari, crispy barramundi, roti bread. A few amazing cocktails and dessert. Everything we had was WOW amazing and delicious. The venue is small and if you don’t like sitting on stools or have a bad back then maybe not your place. I loved sitting at the bar with a friend, however, I often organize large gatherings and I probably would skip doing it here. Ideal for small numbers as booking is not an option.
The service was great and our bartender was super cool and made the night so much more enjoyable
My new favourite!
Like a fly kick to the face, flavour just hits you and I love it. Can't get enough of this place.
Hero dishes are....Thai Ceviche (hunting for this recipe), Crying Tiger, Lamb Ribs, Crispy Barra (love the chilli hit) & the Pork Belly. Get a few cocktails too because you'll enjoy them.
Food comes out fast and is fresh. I never feel rushed by the staff to turn over the table which is nice, because the joint is constantly pumping.
Wish I had some pic to share but I just demolish the food and never get a chance.
5 stars for each of the 5 Devine dishes I tried in shared meal - and I could have easily chosen another 5 favourites (a good excuse to come back).. both food & cocktails (blood orange/apple... and a kefir lime one!) were full of fresh new flavours that held a sucker punch of Zang and Ooomf.. the service was intimate and spot on with menu advice and checking in. You have a new devotee. Thank you!!
Excellent and value for money Asian/Thai dishes. You can also choose 5 dishes for 2 people for $59 lunch or $65 dinner.
Generous portion and tasty sweet dishes. No wonder it is one of the hottest spot in Fitzroy.
Consistently nailing it since they opened.
Menu 10/10
Service 10/10
Vibe 10/10
Setting the bar for Melbourne dining experience every time I visit - great job guys 👌🏻
Small portion sizes that provide such flavor. Service was quick and all end on positives apart from the wagyu beer we ordered which was cold. Apart from that very nice Restaraunt
Great little place. Be prepared to wait for a table though. We waited 90 minutes! You can go off for a drink elsewhere while you wait though and they text you. Sat at the bar. Food was good and so was the service.
I had my 30th birthday upstairs in the private room and I cannot fault this restaurant! The waiters and staff were so accomodating - they set up the room beautifully with flowers and candles, took extra care with people's dietary requirements, made the most delicious cocktails and were just super friendly and helpful. And the food was AMAZING - they catered to vegans, vegetarians, gluten free and even kid-friendly - every dish was absolutely delicious, fresh and flavoursome, and the portions were excellent. Everyone rolled out of there both happy and full. I would HIGHLY recommend this place, not just for lunch or dinner, but for your next function too. Thanks team, you guys are awesome!
Came here on a cold Monday night and the place was nice and warm and cozy. The atmosphere was nice and calm. The service right from the beginning was quite good, the waitress assisted us with ordering as we weren’t quite sure on how/what to order!
We did the dinner for $65 (choice of 5 dishes) and thought that was quite value for money as we got to try a few different dishes! We got the crying tiger, duck salad, sticky pork belly, Thai fried chicken and the Vietnamese baguettes as the 5 dishes and the banana roti to share. The flavors of the duck salad and the pork belly really stood out for me. The pork just melted in your mouth!
There is nothing bad to say about the dishes and all of them tasted incredible. The service was good in the sense where they brought out the dishes in a timely manner without too much/too little of a break in between each dish!
However the only downside was we had to kind of wait quite a while to get someone attention after having the main dishes to get a menu to order dessert. We weren’t really approached to see if we wanted to order drink/dessert after the meal. It was a busy for a Monday night but we just sat there a bit awkwardly.
But all in all, it was a good experience and will definitely return to try some of the other dishes!
Amazing! 10/10
We had the Asian greens, tuna on rice cracker, baguette, bao, ceviche in the 5 for $65 deal. Everything was brilliant. Service was great.
Went in as a group booking and got our own separate area. The staff were really friendly and the food was really good; majority of the food was sharing.
Gastrology recently enjoyed a decadent feast of vegan South East Asian small plates at Rice Paper Scissors. Top picks from the menu included stunning vegan rendang which boasted punchy flavours perfect for mopping up with curry. The event was part of the restaurant's delicious yumcha series. If the pictures here have got your mouth-watering, don't fear... There are more sessions coming up...
Amazing food with modern take on Asian cuisine. Love the unique blend of flavours. Moderately priced and worth every penny. Friendly staff. Enjoyed most of the dishes except for the galloping horses which were too sweet. Would definitely return again!
Super friendly and helpful staff, great wine (more Australian wines would be good though) and phenomenal food! Definitely order the calamari, pork belly and duck salad. 👌🏼

Love the outlet in the CBD, and this one is just as fantastic. Took some friends there, and the service was fab. A little aloof at first, but warmed up to be funny and efficient. The dinner deal is excellent value, and vegetarians and vegans are well taken care of. My friend and I shared the meat dishes, and LOVED every single one. Each dish was zinging with fresh flavour, and it's impossible to not love it. The pork belly and beef cheek were standouts, and the salads are great accompaniments. There's an excellent and reasonably priced wine list (I think the pinot noir was about $45 for the bottle) to complement the food as well. It's incredibly difficult to get into the city restaurant, but Fitzroy is blessed with the luxury of a space upstairs, where we were quickly and easily seated. An absolute must-visit in the area.
Food was delicious and prices are affordable for an Asian fusion - went there once was really excited to come again so I came back second time round staff weren’t attentive like the 1st time which was a disappointment, definitely be back though to eat the sashimi crackers - overall 4 star food was great
I have been here a number of times and have never been disappointed. They don't take reservations so going at 7 on a Friday night, you would expect to wait a bit. Fortunately it's never too long. They invite you to sit at the bar upstairs and peruse the food and drink menus and chat to some of the other people who are waiting... hmm... the bottle of wine goes down well. When the table was ready a short time later, they help you bring your drinks to the table. The service is always excellent.
I have ordered the $65 for 5 dishes (for 2 people) every time, and it's always excellent with a good choice of dishes. I have tried a few different things and they often have specials. Occasionally the specials aren't included on the $65 but that's no big deal. I love a good Ceviche and this one is no exception. The pork belly is always an excellent choice, wonderfully flavoured and it falls apart to perfection. The crying tiger has quite a bit of kick to it... so, after crying a bit I got to enjoy it. Washed down with wine. I really don't think you could go wrong with anything on the menu, and there's no need to order roti or rice as you would surely be full after 5 courses. They look small but are deceptively filling. I have never tried the dessert - I am not sure how you would have room for it!
Took half point off - the walls have no sound absorption and it's really rather loud. That said, I would keep going back.
Enjoyed our experience here. attentive staff, great selection and quality of food. sharing plates enjoyable and there servings were reasonable size.
Absolutely loved this place! Let’s start with the customer service, the host was a super cool dude and waiters did a great job. Although wait time was lengthy (about 35 minutes) it was completely worth the wait but will definitely book in advance in the future. The food? Amazing! Flavours were on point and does Asian cuisine justice in terms of freshness, spice, sweetness and sourness. Ordered the 5 dishes and my absolute favourites were the ribs and pork belly. Hoisin sauce on them were to die for and they were cooked perfectly. Pork belly was quite crispy from the char on the outside and was so soft and tender once you bit into it. It then melts so deliciously inside your mouth and the fat just rolls around your mouth. Ribs fall apart right from the bone as you bite into the tender meat. Just writing this review is making me hungry. The concept of the dropped ice cream dessert was awesome, tasted sweet and delicious. As a Vietnamese person myself, condensed milk on ice cream is my weakness. Will definitely be coming back for more of that delicious pork belly and ribs.
Amazing food and amazing service! Took a little while to get a table but being a very popular place on a Saturday night was understandable. The tasty food and cocktails made up for it!
This place was fantastic!
There was a bit of a wait but they got us seated as soon as they could and they were lovely wait staff.
The food came out promptly and was absolutely delicious. I can’t fault a dish nor can I pick a winner as they were as equally good as each other.
I will be back and I can not wait!

Delicious food and excellent value!!
The dinner menu is set up for two people to select five dishes for $65. So if you’re feeling particularly hungry then you can choose five heavier dishes or ones on the smaller side if you’d prefer a light dinner. Either way, there’s something for everyone! We chose the galloping horses, eggplant soba noodle special, pork buns, kimchi pork dumplings special and papaya salad.
Standouts: The galloping horses on pineapple were sticky, sweet and delicious. The papaya salad with sashimi grade salmon was another highlight. Four generous pirates of high quality salmon on top of a zesty salad. Only criticism (very minor) was that the pork in our buns was a little bit too fatty but overall our entire meal was very good. For drinks we ordered an aperol spritz and the Bellini special which was fresh and fruity.
As always, the service is excellent and the venue was packed at about 7.30pm on a Thursday night. One of my favourite restaurants on Brunswick st for reasonably priced modern Asian food.

I have been looking forward to Rice Paper Scissors for a long time. The last time I tried going was in the city & there was a 2 hour waiting time! That’s crazy long especially when you’re hungry & there’s so many other restaurants in the city to choose from.
We arrived at Rice Paper Scissors in Fitzroy at 7:30pm & got a table straight away. There were only 2 of us so I guess it’s not too hard to get a table.
We had the 5 dishes for $65 deal plus $5 homemade ice tea. We requested to have half the amount of sugar in our drinks & I’m not sure if that was a bad idea because the drinks did not taste good at all. I couldn’t taste the ice tea, instead it tasted like a bad lemon juice that was far too sour & bitter. This place is great if you are dining with a friend who is not vegetarian as the restaurant can offer you a dish that is half vegetarian & half not vegetarian, eg we had one vegetarian steamed bun & one pork steamed bun. I had the following vegetarian dishes: 1. Galloping horses, 2. Steamed vegetarian bun 3. Vegetarian duck salad 4. Vietnamese Vegetarian mini baguette. I did not like the galloping horses! It was very sweet for a savory dish, I could not digest it even with the pineapple on the bottom of the balls. The steamed bun was nice but there wasn’t much filling except for the tofu & 2 little pieces of shallots. I noticed my friend’s pork belly had cucumber as well as the shallots so I’m not sure why I missed out. I also noticed the bun kept on getting stuck on my teeth & gums. The duck salad was delicious chilli hot spicy, filled of favours. The baguette was nice but not as healthy as the normal Vietnamese baguette as brioche bread was used instead. Overall the food quality at Rice Paper Scissors is good but the portions are quite small, considering that each small dish cost around $13. Staff were very friendly.
I find It really hard to order here as I find so many of the dishes so appealing. A great place to share dishes. The lamb ribs are really good. Service is great.
I finally made it to RPS!!!! First time i attempted the city one and they told us it was an hour wait at 6pm as we wernt able to book so we gave up and went next door. Personally i hate waiting! Winged it at the Fitz location and thankgod had an opening instantly! Hostess did tell tell us fitz location is more relaxed and waiting time is quite minimal so thats good to note for next time!
Lovely fitout, tight, better suited for smaller groups and stools a bit uncomfortable. Service was great! Everyone was so happy and friendly.
So 5 dish for $65. Great concept! Smaller plates but for $13 a dish, price was spot on! We ended up ordering the following:
Sticky Pork belly - delicious! Pork was super tender and sauce was good. Took a bit longer to come out though and would have liked a bit more caremel sauce. We ordered a side of sticky rice which was definately needed as it could get very sweet. Despite what our waitet said rice is a requirement for any asian dish!
Duck salad and papaya salad - i understand its diffeeent in terms of ingredients however halfway through both salad tasted very similar to me with the fish sauce and combined veggie and salad. Papaya salad could be a bit spicier as thats the traditional way.
Baramundi and apple salad - again another dish with fish sauce however it had the perfect amount of fish and apples. Skin could have been a bit crispier but i still enjoyed it.
King prawns - presented beautifully. Prawn was tasty especially with the squeeze of lime and the dipping sauce.
Dessert we had the ice cream with condensed milk and rice bubbles.. looks pretty but wayyyyy to sweet for me! we didnt even finish it.
Overall lovely dinner experience. Ohhh and the lychee coconut and kaffir lime drink i had was delicious. Although i did expected it to be a bit more of an icy crush. The chopstick in my drink was a tad fancy... acted as a stirer? Haha...
😱Lizzie’s first impression: very busy even on a Thursday night, but great to see hey have expanded into the surburbs.
🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I have been to the city store over 5 times and this restaurant was no different. The menu is quite similar but this time I got to try the Shanghai cakes which were very tasty. Can never go wrong with the ribs and pork belly! The dishes are very bang for your buck as you can choose 5 dishes for 2 people to share for $65.
🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: The staff sat us on the edge on the bench that had three seats so it made it hard to chat amongst each other. The crying tiger beef was also a little chewy that day unfortunately.
🥇Lizzie rates overall: A great place for Asian fusion and one of my personal favourites
Had a blast here at Rice Paper Scissors. We sat up at the bar and found the staff really lovely. The space is definitely a tight fit but the food is worth it. So many unique Asian fusion flavours. Each dish brought out was so good that we could not decide which was our favourite. Presentation was great, price was a little high but definitely worth it.
Wow so yummy!!!
Our favourite dishes were the smoked broccoli from the vegetarian menu (absolutely outstanding flavour. Like nothing else I've put in my mouth), and the crispy chive cakes (special menu item - the most amazing texture and great sauce)
10/10
Had such a pleasant dining experience at Rice Paper Scissors. Really large range of vegan options, waitress gave great recommendations and the cocktails were delicious. My only warning - easy to spend lots of money as everything is delicious.
We went with the $45 for 5 dishes special which is a great deal that let’s you try lil bits of all the good stuff on offer!
🥬 Milawa Duck Larb is one of my favorites of the day. It is heavily infused with flavor with spice, broken up pieces of rice for a bit of crunch and fresh salad leaves. The sauce is all tangy and savory, which is marvellous as well.
🐟Tuna tartar special of the day with rice crackers was nice as well. Very soy, very ooh crisp fresh!
🐅Crying tiger makes ME cry because oooh charred bits of fatty meats are my life essence pretty much. It’s just criSP. And the citrusy sauce is to die for.
🍤Sugar cane prawns ended up being my mom’s fave. It’s tender, soft, and well flavored. I love the lil mint pairing to add an extra pop of flavor too!
🥘Makrut rockling curry wasn’t my favorite just because I wanted more flavor in the fish. It was cooked separate from the curry, so the flavor didn’t fully infuse BUT, loved the hairy melon bits which were doused in flavor. I’d probably get something else instead of this dish next time, but I’m glad I tried it.
🍸 That lychee drink ($21) is the perfect summary sweet beverage. It’s fizzy, fruity, and delightful.

Food was great except for greens with pork belly which was rather burnt. Service was fantastic too! My fav dish was crispy coconut cup with a variety of flavor bursting. It’s 45per px for 5 dishes (min 2 pax)
Went here for a birthday, and ordered the banquet, great value for money for a party of four. Beef with the lettuce cups (not pictured here) was the stand out dish, followed by the salad and chicken. The dumplings were a bit disappointing. Loved the atmosphere, and how the food randomly came out, in the order they think you should eat it. Apart from the first meal taking a while to come out, it was fantastic and we left very full. Staff were very friendly. Will come back again.
A delightful dinner consisting of a choice of 5 tapas style dishes of south east Asian origin. The highlight dishes were the crispy barramundi salad (with its hot spicy dressing) and Thai BBQ chicken. The pomelo citrus marinated snapper ceviche was pretty good too.
